7:00 am
it's october 1st, thursday. we're making it almost friday. good morning to you. i'm natasha curry. robin meade is on assignment today. you know, got to see this rescue video from indonesia's earthquake. now they have been hit yet again. plus, police are looking for a newborn baby they say was snatched after a violent struggle. what the infant's mom is saying about the kidnapping. al also -- >> i wasn't afraid. >> you've got to hear how this 5-year-old nabbed an 800-pound alligator. the fear is that thousands of people may be buried in the rubble from yesterday's
7:01 am
earthquake in indonesia. a second quake hit overnight about 150 miles from the worst devastation. no word about any injuries from that one but yesterday's quake is blamed for more than 400 deaths. people were sleeping outside unprotected because their homes were destroyed. look at this mess here. now, here's one relief coordinator explaining how the government is using what it learned after the 2004 tsunami. >> we're working hand in hand. we know each other well and we coordinate very carefully, like the government loaned us two planes this morning to fly in relief supplies, so the government's coping well and on the ground with local authorities such as fire services and police are doing a good job. what came out of the tsunami operation is we've got very good coordination mechanisms in place. >> now, watch as rescuers free one woman from a collapsed building here. they pull her out by her arms. people are digging through rubble, too, with their bare
7:02 am
hands to try to find other survivors. some are even using twitter to find lost loved ones. right now police are searching for a newborn who was snatched from a nashville home. the boy is just six days old. here he is. investigators say the kidnapper posed as an immigration officer and showed up at the home which had a sign in the front yard saying it's a boy. the suspects stabbed the mom nine times and stole the baby. maria now has a collapsed lung. >> she says all she can remember is that she went for help and when she came back the baby wasn't there anymore and her younger, 3-year-old daughter was there. >> after the attack, the mom ran for help. her neighbor saw a car speeding away from the house. the mom is said to be in stable condition. any changes to the military strategy in afghanistan won't be made for a couple of weeks. that's from white house spokesman robert gibbs.
7:03 am
president obama met with his national security team about that yesterday. the top u.s. commander in afghanistan has said that the situation isn't getting any better and he's expected to request more troops. the national security team meets again about it next week. actor john travolta says ex-torsists weex extorti extortionists were going to tell the media he was somehow responsible for his son's death. two people are charged with trying to extort $25 million from him in the bahamas. the case revolves around documents travolta signed after his son jett died earlier this year. in cross examination yesterday, the actor said that the defendants never contacted or threatened him directly. they pleaded not guilty. a second, weaker quake hit near the samoan islands overnight but did not trigger warnings of more waves thank goodness. the u.s. sent two military cargo planes loaded with supplies to help people recover from tuesday's deadly tsunami. take a look here. this is american samoa.
7:04 am
at least 139 people died. officials say they could find more victims as rescuers reach remote villages. look at that truck just floating in the water. okay. so michael vick already back with nike? larry smith has the latest details. this was a shocker for some. >> i was stunned when i heard the news. michael vick just months out of prison on dog fighting charges has not only resumed his nfl career but also as a spokesman. both vick's people and nike are quiet about the details. the sponsors of his new team the philadelphia eagles have not dropped their support after his signing. what are your thoughts? what do you think about nike re-signing michael vick? the feds said debt played. the nfl said come play. is this too soon? text your comments to hln tv. that's 45688. or leave your comments on our facebook page and we'll air your comments throughout the morning. look forward to hearing what you
7:05 am
think. >> i'm sure there are a lot of charged opinions. thank you very much. all right. let's get over to check on the forecast. we've had a lot of storms going on. what's swirling around today? >> we're still following the first major storm of the fall season coming off the rocky mountains in now toward the northern plains. i have the satellite picture with the radar. here is the cloud batch as it comes way out of texas up through the middle of the country back across the northern plains and the northern rockies, too. you're getting snow across eastern montana, parts of wyoming as well. look at the heavy downpour action. most of the heavy rain is around central iowa down toward missouri and out of the kansas city area. so a tough morning commute on the roads, specifically around kc stretching down that line in towards st. louis later this morning and then the line stretches in towards iowa. it's going to get in towards wisconsin and northern illinois shortly and minneapolis you can see the rain is overhead right now. not a severe storm. it's great news but the air is a little cooler. the rain is going to be out there for the first part of the
7:06 am
day. scattered showers developing again later this afternoon. underneath that real dome of cold air above you. otherwise severe thunderstorms is the threat again today. it's a slight chance but right around the areas i put in red. mostly around the lower mississippi valley stretching back in towards eastern texas right around the gulf coast. you'll watch for that later today. in fact, the rain already developing ahead of the cold front nearing in towards ft. worth. so something we're watching. frost advisories, the area shaded in blue, freeze warnings once again. area shaded in purple. here's your cold air mass, another one sitting right over toward alpena toward flint, 33. grand rapids, 33 degrees right now outside central michigan in towards basically northern wisconsin. temperatures will be well below freezing. that's why you have your freeze warnings. as for the northeast, here's the way it looks. you have the area of low pressure beginning to unwind a bit but it's cold air still circulating over the great lakes. you get a little bit of cold air out there, two more, a little bit of rain showers around central new york, clouds as well. down in the south you can see what it looks like across the deep southeast. miami, some showers out there. that's all around that frontal
7:07 am
boundary. it's a stationary firm in the florida straits. that's where it is for the morning and more showers develop around the keys through miami probably starting later this afternoon. for the west coast not a bad day but we're watching the big line of rain headed toward chicago. you get some problems out of that. we'll talk about the air travel in a couple minutes. >> thank you, bob. speaking of chicago we're wondering if it's going to get the 2016 olympics. the city is rolling out the big guns in its olympic bid -- oprah, the first lady, the president. so what are the chances? we're digging deeper on this. and a florida representative is throwing gas on the fire in the health care debate. the speech his opponents are calling despicable.
7:08 am
7:09 am
curious what the president is doing tonight? well, he is flying to denmark to throw his support behind chicago's bid for the 2016 olympics. it's the first time that any sitting president has gone in
7:10 am
person. what are the chances that he's going to be successful in this? >> let's take a look. chicago has a few great selling points, natasha. it's fairly low risk. the ioc knows there is a secure source of tv and marketing income in the united states. lake michigan also provides a picturesque setting if you like lakes. and of course there is star power, too. the president, the first lady, and even oprah will make the case for why chicago should get the games. let's look at the other side, too. chicago is lesser known. many of the ioc members have never even been to chicago. the u.s. could also bring a greater risk of terror threats, natasha. >> okay. so what about the other cities in the running? who is chicago's biggest competition for the olympics? >> well, carnoval, rio de janeiro. south america has never hosted the olympics. but rio also has the highest crime rate and the most expensive bid. we're talking about over $10 billion to get ready for the
7:11 am
olympics. madrid is the most ready with more than three-quart he recalls of their venues built or under construction. they also have the most public support but european cities as you know got the last two olympic bids. finally, we've got tokyo to take a look at. it has the most experience hosting major sporting events but the last summer games were in asia and have not created much buzz for their bid as of yet. >> got you. we'll see what hamppens. interesting. you probably don't expect to hear a 13-year-old has breast cancer but in about 15 minutes we'll hear about one teen's brave battle. you can say good-bye to saturn cars. our money expert jennifer westhoven has more on why general motors is pulling the plug on the brand. >> there were months where they were trying to sell saturn to pensky but in the end pensky backed out. general motors says that it will stop making the cars and the
7:12 am
dealerships have to close. that's 13,000 jobs. now, if you own a saturn, there is good news here. you can still get your car taken care of just fine. you just get it serviced at a gm dealership. here are some people in michigan. >> kind of unsettled as i drive off the lot but i still think it'll be a good car. >> i just think that it will be taken care of and i'm not concerned. >> if you didn't buy a car during cash for clunkers you might want to check out deals at the saturn dealerships coming up. pensky doesn't make cars so it had been hoping it was going to get another car manufacturer to make them. that broke down and so that's why the deal fell through. the nation's biggest bank's ceo is stepping down. ken lewis says he'll leave bank of america by the end of the year. lewis has been under fire over the controversial acquisition of merrill lynch right at the peak of the financial meltdown a year ago. you may remember at the time he was hailed as a hero. no successor has been named yet. and reports this morning that one of america's biggest cable companies, comcast, you
7:13 am
may be watching us on comcast right now, is in talks to buy part of nbc universal from ge. some reports say it could be around $35 billion. nbc owns nbc, also usa network, cnbc, msnbc, and bravo. but neither ge nor comcast would confirm the deal to cnn. natasha, back to you. it said thanks jen in the prompter so that threw me off. >> comcast, we were talking about it. live from philadelphia it's saturday night! >> yes. >> don't think that'll happen. what's going on everyone? let me show you what's happening across the skies. earlier this morning caught a nice sunrise around new york city. look at this shot. had to show it to you. there's the upper east side with just a few mid level cloudiness shots coming in. time lapse it for you here. that is absolutely gorgeous. also looking at the east side again. it looks real nice. that's the way it's going to be for most of the day. no concerns around new york. i think you will see a couple concerns across the midwest.
7:14 am
we're talking about right around minneapolis all the way down through des moines back on in toward st. louis. shortly we'll catch delays out of the squall line as it moves on through. here's what we have for the rest of the day. one-half hour or more, you'll find it around chicago, seattle with showers, st. louis, minneapolis with storms. kansas city and dallas storms and also denver. a little bit of a wind out there. gusty winds today to 30 miles per hour. bumps you around and gives you a short delay, too. more details in a half hour. tiger woods' list of accomplishments seems endless. now "forbes" says the golfer's latest win has given him something that no other athlete has ever accomplished.
7:15 am
7:16 am
a florida democrat is refusing to apologize after saying the republican plan for health care is just calling for sick people to die quickly. republicans are blasting freshman representative alan grason. they called grason's remarks despicable and demanded an apology but grayson is refusing. >> it's shameful what's been done. mr. grayson, how about apologizing? mr. grayson? mr. grayson, how about apologizing? >> let's remember that we should care about people even after they're born. so i call upon the democratic members of the house. i call upon the republican members of the house. i call upon all of us to do our jobs for the sake of america,
7:17 am
for the sake of those dying people and their families. i apologize to the dead and their families that we haven't voted sooner to end this holocaust in america. >> republican congressional committee spokesman ken spain slammed grayson for what he called a pathological pattern of unstable behavior. china is celebrating its rise to a world power and today is the country's 60th anniversary. thousands of troops marched in beijing's tiananmen square before the celebration. in new york, check it out. red and yellow lights honoring china lit up the empire state building. some critics say the lights on a u.s. landmark are just wrong because of the communist country's poor human rights record. tiger woods, michael jordan, they're buddies, but guess which one of them is a billionaire? larry smith is here with the answer. >> good morning. tiger woods makes history again as sports' first billion dollar athlete according to "forbes"
7:18 am
which has been tracking his earnings since he turned pro 13 years ago. woods won a $10 million prize by winning the fedexcup last weekend and that put him just over the billion dollar mark in his career in combined on and off-the-course earnings. now, jordan is expected to top $1 billion in career earnings in the next few years. that's a lot of money for the golf course. well, eagles backup quarterback michael vick has re-signed with nike, a move that stunned the sports world as well as madison avenue. though the corporate giant does have a reputation for standing by its players, nike had severed ties with vick two years ago before he entered prison on dog fighting charges. they're back together. we're asking for your comments today. mark wrote on our facebook page that nike may be disappointed to find they are more forgiving than american consumers. he has done his time. let him be. not that i'm a fan but this is the land of second chances. we appreciate your comments. keep them coming.
7:19 am
moving on, the college running back who needed seven hours of reconstructive surgery after a weight bar fell on his neck during a workout is now resting and even tweeting. usc senior stephon johnson created the twitter account to thank his fans after he crushed his larynx and throat. >> ouch. >> that's a look at sports. >> glad he's doing better. thanks. a 5-year-old hunter bagged a pretty big trophy in texas. larry, you'll want to check this out. look at this little guy. he took home an 800-pound gator. yeah, the gator isn't the little guy. the kid was hunting with his dad and a family friend sunday when he shot and killed the 12-foot gator. the boy's mom was a bit worried as you can imagine. >> as a mom it sort of scares you to death because they're alligators. there are snakes. there's all of that sort of thing out there. >> what is it with boys and reptiles, huh? the boy isn't done yet though. he said he hopes to get a bigger gator next year, larry. >> his mama wants a pair of shoes and matching purse.
7:20 am
>> looking out for mama. >> that's right. >> okay. we've got an exciting addition to our primetime lineup. "the joy behar show" premiered this week and airs every night at 9:00 p.m. eastern right here on hln. here is a quick taste of what you're going to get. it's her "not for nothing" commentary. >> you know, not for nothing but my show has been on the air for what, like two minutes? and already i've been called every name in the book. i've been called stupid, pushy, dumb, a loud mouth, and a marxist. i take exception. i am not a marxist. i own property. okay. it's in foreclosure. but, still. this name calling doesn't bother me. you think it bothers me? i'm used to it. bill o'reilly once called me a pinhead. yeah. he's mature. and a christian columnist named eric rush actually called me a fatty boombladdy. which version of the bible does he read, the king james or the
7:21 am
dr. seuss? let me say something to these nattering negative nabobs. i am a mature woman capable of intelligent discourse. i love to engage in cogent debate and partake in well informed conversation. okay? i relish the thought of sitting down with all of my adversaries. so, glenn, rush, bill, i invite all of you to come on the show and discuss things like rational adults even if you are a big bunch of doodie heads. but that's just me. >> catch "the joy behar show" at 9:00 p.m. eastern right here on hln. always surprising, always interesting. even the richest of the rich can't escape the bad economy. but wait until you hear some of what the wealthiest people lost recently. and a guy in a wheelchair springs into action. what he did to stop a girl from being taken from a store.

police in nashville are searching for a person who stabbed a woman and stole her newborn baby. the child is six days old. his mother was stabbed nine times and suffered a collapsed lung. police say the home had a sign out front reading, "it's a boy" and the attacker came to the door claiming to be an immigration agent. yesterday's massive quake in indonesia has killed more than 400 people and officials say thousands more may be buried under rubble. people are using chisels and even bare hands to search for survivors. a second, weaker quake hit a different area of the island nation overnight. we haven't heard about any injuries from that one. the state of michigan has a budget at least for now.
7:31 am
overnight lawmakers approved a temporary 30-day budget. it was passed two hours after a government shutdown started. michigan is struggling with a $3 billion budget shortfall and the nation's highest unemployment rate. the newly revealed nuclear facility in iran will be a major topic today during a meeting of a u.n. security council in switzerland. the u.s. wants a u.n. watch dog group to have full access to the site. one senior u.s. official says washington is open to rare one-on-one talks with iranian diplomats. these are some of the headlines we're following this morning. welcome back. good morning to you. i'm natasha curry in for robin meade today. she is on assignment. democrats say they could get a health care reform bill on the floor of both houses within two weeks. that's a tall order, though. there is no agreement on whether to create a government paid insurance option and republican efforts to amend the bill to something they'll support have failed. now, yesterday president obama was working the phones trying to
7:32 am
get more democrats to support the proposal. a small plane crashed in indiana with f-16s trailing right behind it. norad said air traffic controllers called the military after they lost communication with the pilot. it says the f-16s caught up with the single engine plane but the pilot was unresponsive. there's the plane wreckage there in the trees. state police said one person is dead. presumably the pilot. that person's identity has not been confirmed. first lady michelle obama says that the gloves are off in the battle to get the 2016 olympics to chicago. she sat down with the president of the olympic committee this morning and president obama will join her tonight in denmark. why is he getting involved, richard? >> reporter: this could be partially personal if you think about it. president obama has a home just two blocks from where the games would be held if they were to get that bid. but political analysts are also
7:33 am
saying he needs a big win right now with tough battles on health care and the afghan war we've been talking about. this could be a shot of good news for him. the republican party chair even suggesting that the president might have too much on his plate. the white house press secretary responded to that. >> who is he rooting for? he hoping to hop a plane to brazil and catch the olympics in rio? maybe it's madrid. >> all right. talking about the competition, madrid is certainly one. the competition is brazil, japan, and spain. they've all sent their heads of state for the meeting. >> a lot of bigwigs supporting the chicago bid but there is also a grass roots effort to really keep the olympics out of chicago. >> yeah, as we were saying, some little wigs that don't want it to happen. there is a website, chicago for rio that bashes the olympic bid. earlier this week nearly 200 people who share the sentiment took to the streets in protest. take a listen.
7:34 am
>> hey hey hoho. we don't want the olympics! [ chanting ] >> they say chicago cannot afford the games and is too corrupt to handle them. a different group called "no games chicago" is actually traveling to denmark to deliver the very same message to the ioc. they don't want it in chicago. >> wow. quite a trip. thanks so much, richard. students living in the dorms can't get no satisfaction at least not when the room mate is in the room. a new rule at the university bans sex while your room mate is present. also a no-no according to the university's new student handbook, so-called sex-iling, the act of exiling your room mate to get more privacy in your room. you know, to study. bob? >> i want to know why they had to create a rule for this. >> i don't know. >> what happened to tying your
7:35 am
bow tie around the doorknob or a shirt or something? >> you have to have rules for everything i guess. >> what are you going to do? >> how does the forecast look? >> so far wet. this weather brought to you by new sudafed 12 hour. what's happening right now? a big area of low pressure. really the first storm we've seen come over the rocky mountains. it's been this strong really since springtime. we're watching this develop with rain toward missouri and iowa, now toward minneapolis and st. paul. we're watching rain developing south of the front getting into areas like texas. rain developing just outside of ft. worth. it's going to stretch up toward the region. light rain making it in toward the red river stretching in toward eastern oklahoma and it picks up in intensity. how about this for heavy rain south of kansas city into central missouri? that moves in toward iowa and all the way toward lower parts of minnesota and that rain will stretch out and rain itself out essentially over the next couple hours near chicago and milwaukee. so you'll get some showers out of that later today. may slow you down at the
7:36 am
airports, something we'll find out later this afternoon. rain showers, thunderstorms could turn stronger later today. it's going to be right in the vicinity of the cold front and below the warm front so the warm air here is moist. cold front kicking in. lots of powerful thunderstorms will develop late this afternoon through the evening hours just like yesterday. cold air still out there. frost advisories, freeze warnings. look at some of the readings now. 31 degrees in flint when you get back on in towards marquette. into the 20s. 27 for the yuppers. cold start. we'll have more details in a bit. check out this video from china. the chinese trying to make their 60th anniversary celebration the perfect event for the day fired up some rockets to try to make it rain right before the rain clouds hit into the parade. may have worked because it looks partly cloudy right there. did not rain on their parade as they say. good news for the chinese. but, yeah. cloud seeding. not a new thing. usually they use silver iodide to try to get the clouds to produce rain. cools it down and brings it down
7:37 am
to the dew point quicker. brings it to saturation. i don't know what they use bud whatever it is it appeared it worked. >> skies look great. we could use some of that stuff in seattle. okay. maybe not. >> maybe not. >> maybe. thanks, bob. okay. so banks are biting the bullet and trying to help struggling borrowers make their mortgage payments. that's good news in a bad economy. also ahead, whatever happened? bob's asking. i'm asking. to hanging a tie on the doorknob, folks? a major university tells students what you can't do for a little privacy.

chicago police say they are fighting a code of silence as they try to track down more suspects in the beating death of a teenager. derrion albert was an innocent bystander attacked during a gang fight. it was caught on tape as dozens of young people looked on. last night on our sister network cnn chicago's police superintendent vented his frustration. >> this young man was killed. the entire city is outraged. and yet we have gotten no tips, no calls. >> are you serious? no one? >> no one has called in that i'm aware of from talking to the detectives and provided us with any information. that is unbelievable to me when the offenders are teenagers. they're involved with other teenagers that go to the same school. and no one calls in. we are literally getting killed by this code of silence, this no snitching rule. we've got to work hard to
7:41 am
overcome it. >> so far police have arrested four teens on first-degree murder charges. they say all three were seen on videotape attacking albert. investigators are looking for three more suspects. so america's richest people are getting poorer. our money expert jennifer westhoven takes a look at "forbes'" magazine list of the richest people in the u.s. and how much they lost last year. >> it's not exactly like they're pulling their pockets out and looking sad like the guy on monopoly but a "forbes" senior editor said it was a billionaire blood bath last year. the 400 richest people in the world lost 20% of their money. fewer people basically in the billionaire category. check out oprah winfrey. she lost $400 million in the latest year down to number 141. she is worth about $2 billion overall. of course the perennial winner on this list bill gates, 16 years at the top, investor warren buffet is number two. so, you know, once in a while, i
7:42 am
think one year there was a year where bill got knocked down and warren buffet was number one. they're basically the same there. now, for the rest of us there are millions of americans who have been facing foreclosure. a lot of you guys have written to me saying we've been trying, called the banks over and over. can't get a new, workable deal. a new government report shows some progress. it says banks are starting to step up when they're modifying loans and even reduce the principle sometimes and for homeowners that is good news in a bad economy for people trying to hang on to their house. "the wall street journal" reports for the bank they end up losing some of the money on their original investment but at least they know that way they will get something back instead of nothing. right? a foreclosure isn't good for the bank either. the newspaper says it's partly thanks to pressure from the white house that the banks are making that change. all right. you go to a cash machine. you can't find your own. so first that cash machine charges you. then your own bank hits you again because you swiped your card in some other bank's
7:43 am
machine. you could end up paying $5, $6 sometimes on a hundred dollar west baltimor withdrawal. a new study says, yes. atm fees have exploded. even in this recession they continue to creep higher. if you want to use another bank's atm it's going to charge you an average of $3.50. natasha, back to you. >> wow. in this recession people are trying to find ways to make money any way they can. thanks. there is an exciting addition we want to tell you abou about. good news here. the "jay behar show" premiered this week and airs every night at 9:00 p.m. eastern on hln. tonight joy will talk to film maker michael moore about the health care debate. >> it really is the democrats you're mad at right now isn't it? >> absolutely. i expected this from the republicans. but not from the people who, i mean, the nation went to vote last november and they made it very clear that they wanted universal health care. the people by a vast majority
7:44 am
voted for this. they gave the democrats 60 seats in the senate. and for them to be behaving like republicans, boy, i tell you. i'm going to be busy next year, whichever one of them are for re-election next year. and the same goes for any of the members of the house of congress who are standing in the way of universal health care. >> catch "the joy behar show" at 9:00 p.m. eastern right here on hln. the florida sex offender who buried 9-year-old jessica lunsford alive four years ago has died. authorities say the death of convicted rapist and killer john couy was not a surprise. why jessica's father says he was sad when he heard the news.

the florida sex offender convicted of raping and burying 9-year-old jessica lunsford alive is dead. john couy died at a hospital yesterday of natural causes. a source close to the case says the 51-year-old death row inmate had been sick for sometime and
7:47 am
his death was no surprise. now listen to what jessica's father had to say about it. >> he wanted his sentence reduced to life. i guess he got his answer, didn't he? that's fair enough for me. you ask for life, you want to make an appeal to ask for your sentence to be reduced for life and then you die. i guess he got his answer. >> couey was convicted of kidnapping and killing jessica from her bedroom in 2005. okay. so all you business travelers out there, people dropping them off at the airport, what's up with the air travel update, bob? >> we're going to have some problems around minneapolis-st. paul region right now. starting in just about 13 minutes you'll be an under two-hour delay because of runway construction. add the fact you have rain over you, a slow go up there. minneapolis a current delay. as for the rest, chicago going to get rain showers later today, about half-hour delays. same with st. louis. minneapolis-st. paul, the
7:48 am
two-hour delay just for the morning because of the runway construction. dallas, thunderstorms later today as well. more on that in a bit. natasha? >> thank you, bob. okay. so michael vick expected the cat calls after time in prison for dog fighting but did anyone expect this? larry smith has the latest on the eagles' quarterback. a lot of people just did a head snap on this one. >> it really did. i'm surprised. i'm not surprised that michael vick is back as a spokesman. i'm stunned it happened this soon. nike, ea sports, and air trend all dropped the former pro ball quarterback two years ago but he has now re-signed with nike to terms not announced and nike may have been prompted by the lack of protests outside sunday's game which was vick's first in the regular nfl season since he served time in prison on dog fighting charges. not everyone is feeling the vick love again though. national retailer dick sporting goods is not selling vick's new jersey in any of its stores. we've been asking for your thoughts. craig wrote on our facebook page, quote -- i'm thoroughly disgusted by his crimes but he paid for his bad deeds.

9:11 am
for sure. >> there is a chance that taylor's cancer could reoccur, so she does get check-ups every six months. and by the way, october is breast cancer awareness month. the ceo of the largest u.s. bank is calling it quits. let's go over to our money expert jennifer westhoven with details. >> hey, thank you, natasha. ken lewis says he'll be leaving bank of america by the end of the year. he's been under a lot of fire over the acquisition of merrill lynch. that happened during the height of the financial meltdown at a time when people, leaders really worried the entire system was going to collapse. he was hailed as a hero for that then, but since then, a lot of questions. no successor has been named. millions of americans facing foreclosure call their banks over and over. a lot of you told us your stories. you're trying to find a way to keep the home, change the mortgage. well, a new government report shows some banks have stepped up. that's some good news in a bad economy for homeowners.
9:12 am
and new government report says they are looking at reducing the principal. so good for the homeowners, not necessarily for the banks according to the "wall street journal." because the banks do lose some money when they do that. but it does mean they've got a much higher chance of getting something back instead of nothing if somebody defaults and loses their home. it's partly due to pressure from the white house. a michigan woman who ate her vegetables as a child, now she's got a growing company. stephanie elam has the story in our small business success. >> reporter: michelle made a life-changing decision at a young age. >> i was 14 years old when i became vegetarian. >> reporter: so it was natural to follow her stomach and start what is now known as mu-mu's vegetarian cuisine in 2004. she began by making fresh food and selling it wholesale to local markets in the detroit area. after several months, she opened a small vegetarian bistro at her facility. then her food was distributed to stores, hospitals, and

president obama flies to denmark tonight to throw his support behind chicago's bid for the 2016 olympics. this is the first time, though, that any sitting president has actually gone in person. correspondent richard lui is joining us. what are the chances he'll be successful in this attempt? >> good morning, natasha. chicago has a few great selling points on its own. it's fairly low risk by somes aerations there. there's a secure source of tv and marketing income in the u.s., for instance. lake michigan also provides a picturesque setting and there's star power, the first lady and oprah will make the case. then on the flip side, chicago's lesser known. many ioc members have never been to chicago. the u.s. could also bring a greater risk, natasha of terror threats. >> okay. so richard, what about the other cities in the running?
9:17 am
who's chicago's biggest competition? >> rio de janeiro, south america's never hosted the olympics before. but rio also has the highest crime rate and the most expensive bid somewhere around $14 billion. now madrid is the most ready with about 70% of the structures already built, 3/4 more or less of their venues under construction and the most public support. but european cities got the last two olympic bids. take it to asia to tokyo, it has the most experience, but the last summer games as you know were in asia and they haven't created much buzz for their bid as of yet. >> all right, richard. we can't wait to see what happens. >> yeah, tomorrow. >> thanks. we have an exciting addition to our prime time lineup. the joy behar show premiered this week and it airs every night at 9:00 p.m. eastern right here on hln. now, here's a quick taste of what you're going to get. it's her "not for nothing" commentary.

>> you know, not for nothing, but my show has been on the air for what like two minutes? and already i've been called every name in the book. i've been called stupid, pushy, dumb, a loud mouth, and a marxist. i take exception. i am not a marxist. i own property. okay, it's in foreclosure, but still. this name calling doesn't bother me. you think it bothers me? i'm used to it. bill o'reilly once called me a pinhead, yeah, he's mature. and a christian columnist named eric rush actually called me a fatty boom bladdy. which version of the bible does he read the king james or dr. seuss? i am an intelligent woman, i love to engage in cogent debate and partake in well-informed conversation. i relish the thought of sitting down with all of my adversariea. so glenn, rush, bill, i invite
9:19 am
all of you to come on the show and discuss things like rational adults, even if you are a big bunch of doody heads. but that's just me. >> you can catch the joy behar show at 9:00 p.m. eastern right here on hln. okay. so tiger woods wears red on sunday, but the superstar golfer's primary color might as well be green. larry smith is here with more on this, larry. nice. >> the forbes magazine tracks dollars in the megarich and says tiger woods has made history as the first $1 billion athlete. woods pocketed a $10 million pride by winning the fedex cup last weekend and that put him just over the $1 billion mark in his career and combine on and off the course earnings. and oh, yeah, he's only 34 years old. meanwhile, almost twice his age, dallas cowboys owner jerry jones makes the list of the 400 richest, ranking 196 with $1.8
9:20 am
billion up from a ranking of 355 last year. why? because of that new stadium they built down there, he bought the team for $150 million 20 years ago, the cowboys are now worth $1.65 billion, again, thanks in part to that new $1 billion stadium. a lot of money in texas. michael vick has resigned with nike, a move that some are finding shocking. though the corporate giant does have a reputation for standing by his players. nike has severed ties with vick two years ago before he entered prison on dog fighting charges. but they are back together again. we've been asking for your comments all morning. a viewer texting in, vick did the time, takes humiliation, great comeback story. while another viewer texting in, nike is endorsing dog fighting which unfortunately is enough to have me not buy nike anymore. thanks again for your comments today. that college running back who needed 7 hours of reconstructive surgery after a weight bar fell on his neck during a workout is resting and
9:21 am
tweeting. he created the twitter account to thank hi fans and friends after he crushed his larynx and throat. he can't move his head and neck. got to keep that in position. >> poor guy. sounds painful. thanks, larry. a pregnant 12-year-old who was missing was found. her father is behind bars. new for you in about 30 minutes, how an alert driver helped police find them. a 5-year-old hunter bagged a pretty big trophy in texas. he took home an 800-pound alligator. i guess this would only be in texas, right? look at this big sucker. okay, the kid was hunting with his dad and a family friend sunday when he shot and killed this 12-foot gator. the boy's mom was a bit worried. >> as a mom, it sort of scares you to death because there's alligators, snakes, all of that thing out there. >> the boy isn't done yet. he says he hopes to get a bigger gator next year. look out. a convicted rapist and

9:32 am
the offenders are teenagers, they're involved with other teenagers that go to the same school and no one calls in. we are literally getting killed by this code of silence. there's no snitching rule. and we've got to work hard to overcome it. >> so far police have arrested fourteens on first-degree murder charges. they say all three were seen on videotape attacking gilbert. investigators are looking for three more suspects. a florida democrat is refusing to apologize after saying the republican plan for health care is just calling for sick people to die quickly. republicans are blasting a freshman representative grayson. they call his remarks despicable and demanded an apology. but grayson is refusing. >> it's shameful what's been done. mr. grayson, how about apologizing? mr. grayson, mr. grayson, how about apologizing? >> let's remember that we should

care about people even after they're born. so i call upon the democratic members of the house, i call upon the republican members of the house, i call upon all of us to do our job for the sake of america, for the sake of those dying people and their families. i apologize to the dead and their families that we haven't voted sooner to end this whole accost on america. >> republican congressman committee spokesman -- he called unstable behavior. do you remember when a guy threw his shoes at president bush in baghdad last year? well, watch as the guy throws his shoe at the director of the monetary fund. this is at a conference in turkey earlier today. security guards stopped the shoe thrower. you see it fly. it missed the director but hit somebody in the audience. hopefully they're all right. you've got to see some amazing video of a fire rescue in new york. take a look here.

we're watching this fall season and it continues to wrap up. right now it's across the northern midwest part of the country. way out ahead of that in towards chicago. high pressure dominating the east coast, again all the way down through north georgia into florida. live to atlanta. north georgia looking good. if you're doing any traveling in and out of the big city. a lot of plays coming in and out. a little bit on the cool side around 50 degrees, low temperature, low 70s today in atlanta. so the east coast looks pretty nice. but the rest can't be said for the rest of the country. let me take you back to the heaviest rain now beginning to fall outside of dallas and stretching into big d goes in towards oklahoma and toward kansas, missouri, going to get in towards illinois and wisconsin, heavy times right now outside of kansas city, you can see the flashing lights, the lightning going all the way down towards the south. that rain stretches back in towards iowa. you can see it here, cedar rapids, rain moving in towards illinois and wisconsin. but again, rain right around
9:36 am
minneapolis-st. paul, and more showers breaking up as it moves into towards wisconsin. the heaviest rain down to the south today. breaks up as you saw on the radar as you head up toward the north. severe thunderstorms, possibility, especially in the areas in red. more details on that in a little bit. plus a look at the west coast in half an hour from now. and how about the chinese? to help make their 60th anniversary celebration the perfect weather event, they fired up rockets in the air. they tried to disperse the rain. they tried to make the rain happen before it actually reached the parade. it may have worked. i don't know if they caused rain or not, but it's not raining in these pictures. i don't even see any smog. >> for china, that looks really good. >> it does. takes a whole lot of silver iodine to get the rain going. they must have fired up a lot of rockets. >> i could use that some days for my hair. thanks, bob. so the stock market had its best third quarter in 70 years,
9:37 am
posting 15% gains over the last three months. and susan lisovicz is at the new york exchange live with early moves as the fourth quarter gets underway. >> hi, natasha. well, there's a change of sentiment apparently on the first day of this new month and new quarter. and there's a reason why. first-time jobless claims rose more than expected last week to over 550,000. the number of people applying for government help for an extended fell, but remains very high level. above 6 million. consumer spending jumped in august. but largely due to the cash for clunkers program. personal income also ticked higher. ken lewis, the embattled ceo of bank of america is stepping down at the end of the year. he's been criticized for the handling of the takeover of merrill lynch and he's been tangled in investigations. b of a posted a profit last quarter and its stock is up more than 500% after its all-time low

9:39 am
>> it's not bad to be oprah, though. >> or to be able to lose $1 a day, i guess in a weird sort of way. susan lisovicz, live at the new york stock exchange, thanks so much. >> thank you, natasha. well, a convicted rapist and murderer died behind bars john couey was convicted of kidnapping and murdering a little girl. how his father is reacting to that news.

9:42 am
had been sick for sometime and his death was no surprise. now, listen to what jessica's father had to say about it. >> he wanted his sentence reduced to life. i guess he got his answer, didn't he? that's fair enough for me. when you ask for life you want to make an appeal to ask for your sentence to be reduced to life and then you die. and that sounded like i guess he got his answer. >> couey was convicted of kidnapping jessica from her bedroom in 2005. her body was found buried, wrapped in garbage bags along with a stuffed toy. even telling you about an ugly custody battle that landed a tennessee father in jail in japan. new for you our next hour, a jailhouse interview with that dad, richard. >> good morning to you, natasha. christopher savoie's ex-wife took the kids and fled to japan and then he tried to grab them back, and now he's in big trouble and will explain why
