president obama is waiting for news almost like it's election day. in fact, in just a few hours we'll know whether he struck gold with his pitch to bring the 2016 olympic games to chicago. plus, the late night confession no one in the audience saw coming. you have to hear what made david letterman admit to having relations with some of his employees. and a man has one word to describe his wife. stupid. that's what he said. police say she was so drunk she passed out in her minivan while her two young kids apparently wandered off for miles. thank you so much for being with us today. let's get started.

our top story, new this morning the number of people out of work is at a 26-year high. the unemployment rate rose to 9.8% last month. that's about 263,000 jobs lost, more than expected. we want to take a quick look at the markets to show you how the numbers are reacting to this news. so far you can see that stocks are down in early trading after a terrible down day yesterday. our money expert jennifer westhoven has more on what the unemployment numbers mean in just a moment. meanwhile, we're about three hours from finding out who will host the 2016 summer olympic games. overnight president obama and the first lady lobbied to bring the olympics to chicago. now they have to wait to find out if those efforts are going to pay off. the president told the international olympic committee that chicago and the u.s. are ready to host such a global event. i urge you to choose chicago. i urge you to choose america. and if you do, if we walk this

path together, i promise you this. the city of chicago and the united states of america will make the world proud. >> chicago, tokyo, rio, and madrid have been lobbying for more than a year to host the 2016 olympic games. the editor of an olympics website says rio and chicago are neck and neck. new this morning a jaw-dropping admission from late night host david letterman. he says he was a target of a $2 million extortion plot. he also admitted to having sex with female employees in the past. now, in a somewhat bizarre explanation to his audience last night letterman said a man threatened to write a screenplay exposing those relationships. >> would it be embarrassing if it were made public? perhaps it would. perhaps it would. especially for the women.

the economy, large numbers of jobs are still being lost. our money expert jennifer westhoven has more on what today's unemployment numbers could mean for this economy. jen? >> hi. thank you, virginia. this is one of the best ways we have to see how the economy is doing. you know, different in terms of what we hear from federal reserve heads who are looking at a lot of numbers. this is how people feel it. unemployment got worse in the latest month. it ticked slightly higher so up to 9.8%. that's the worst since 1983. back then it was more than 10%. we're awfully close to that. more than 7 million jobs have been destroyed since the recession started and it's very widespread across industry. construction lost 64,000 jobs. factory jobs down 51,000. retail, even government jobs down sharply, virginia. one of the few areas that eeked out gains is still health care. if you're job hunting the best thing to do is if you can find any way to align your skills to a health care job even as an accountant apply for a position with a health care firm and

you're more likely to get in. >> at least there's one bright spot out of all of those. thank you so much. new this morning, another strong earthquake shook an already devastated area today. this one hit off of tonga. people there and in the samoan islands are still looking for survivors from tuesday's tsunami which killed at least 168 people, washed away entire villages, ripped apart families. at least ten significant quakes have hit that area in the last couple of days. dramatic amateur video this morning of the quake aftermath in indonesia. take a look at this. it was captured right after a roof collapsed at a sports hall while people were inside practicing karate. you can see them in their karate uniforms and you can see people coming out of the rubble covered with dust. still, oh, unbelievable. at least 1100 people died after two quakes hit that country and it's feared that thousands more may still be buried in rubble just like this. michael jackson was apparently in pretty good

physical shape before he died. the associated press got a copy of his autopsy report, which says jackson's heart was strong and his other major organs were normal. but jackson's lungs were apparently chronically inflamed. a doctor who reviewed the autopsy report talked about the findings. >> he's 50. all of us at the age of 50, you have some wear and tear on your body especially with what he did. so to my opinion what i have seen is certainly normal wear and tear. he did have some scars from cosmetic surgery and all the issues that we know and he did have multiple needle marks on his arms. >> as you may recall, a coroner ruled jackson's death a homicide caused by a powerful sedative. we are heading into a weekend and for a lot of people that means they want to know how the weather is going to be so let's go to meteorologist bob van dillen to find out. >> so far it's been an active friday morning. a lot of rain pulling into the great lakes, back into the northeast now, too. you can see the trailing cold

front driving down through kentucky and tennessee, back into alabama and it stretches all the way back down to the gulf but the rain has really been thinning out as it runs into drier air anchored across the mid-atlantic states. the heavy rain is just about over with for you across the extreme southern louisiana. light scattered showers. we had them out there just about an hour and a half ago. after a strong line of thunderstorms raced on through lake ponchartrain into the crescent city, had some decent rain. now it's drying out also around basically mississippi and alabama with broken line of showers near atlanta but as you can see, not much to worry about but the low clouds are in. might catch a delay or two at the airport because of that. rain picks up though when you get in towards ohio and then it really picks up nicely across northern pennsylvania. now stretching in towards new york as well and the rain wraps all the way back in towards minnesota, the dakotas and then wraps back in towards wisconsin, too. some of the rain totals we had from yesterday pretty impressive. look at these coming out of minnesota. look at paynesville, 2.9 inches of rain. st. cloud, 2.13.

fargo and north dakota almost two inches of rain yesterday. speaking of heavy rain look at this. it was like the apocalypse. that's how one woman described mudslides that killed at least 13 people on the island of cicely in italy. authorities say several buildings collapsed and about 20 people are still missing. so that is just a horrible situation. it was basically a heck of a lot of rain in the mountains, just washing down and going, turning into the mud. so just a dire situation in parts of cicely unfortunately. >> my husband has relatives there. not in those areas though. >> it's a rough couple days. more rain in the forecast to go. >> that's a shame. thank you so much, bob. well, apparently reality television is just a little too real for jon gosselin. why he told producers of "jon and kate plus 8" to stop the show and how they're reacting.

maybe you've heard tlc is stopping production on the reality show "jon and kate plus 8." the network says jon gosselin

sent a cease and desist order to stop filming his children. on our sister network cnn gosselin told larry king he's trying to protect his kids. >> i'm asking not to be on the show. i'm asking my children not to be on the show. i mean, i don't want them to film anymore. i don't think it's healthy for them and the reason doint think it's healthy for them is we're going through a divorce right now and i don't think it should be televised and i think my kids should be taken off the show. >> jon wants to try this in the media. he doesn't want to go to a judge. he doesn't want to deal with the question of the best interests of the children. that's kate's sole concern. >> meanwhile, kate gosselin is accusing jon of stopping the show because producers wanted to focus more on her experience as a single mom, giving him a lesser role. we have an exciting addition to our primetime lineup. we could use good news. >> back below 5%. anybody who is trying to sell right now is thinking, maybe, maybe. yeah, mortgage rates back below the mark. not quite at the record low, which was set in the spring, but we're close to it. that is some good news in a bad economy. the 30-year mortgage, here you see it for the first time in four months, 4.94. this is from freddie mac. and a 15 year. that's a record low. 4.3%. if you can swing the monthly payment, carefully, right, be careful about that. you would pay a lot less interest over time if you can take that on with integrity. you have to make sure you can still pay it. all right. we talked this week about the ceo of america's biggest bank quitting. ken lewis from bank of america. well, you know you've heard all of this talk about how they're getting rid of golden parachutes. it's not a golden parachute but his pension is $53 million. yeah, they never put press releases out about stuff like that. it's in the small print. >> strange. >> it was in the proxy statement bank of america files but he is leaving of course amid heavy

criticism over his bank's takeover of merrill lynch but even with all the criticism, $3.5 million a year for the rest of his life. how is he going to live on that? >> exactly. >> all right. there uyou go. thank you, jen. elizabeth smart was just 14 years old when she was kidnapped from her bedroom. now she is telling the chilling details about what happened to her and police say they found more than a pound of pot in the last place you might expect.

so for the first time elizabeth smart is talking publicly about her kidnapping seven years ago. yesterday in court she described her kidnapper brian david mitchell as evil, wicked, and slimy. that's a quote. she says mitchell raped her three or four times a day. and threatened to kill her as she tried to escape. smart's father says she actually wanted to face mitchell in court and asked if he could be muzzled for the hearing. >> there were certainly a lot of things that i had never heard before. and i had -- and i had no idea

what she had gone through, so much out there. >> so difficult for the family. smart's testimony will help decide whether mitchell is mentally competent to stand trial. we're just hours away from the final decision on which city could be hosting the 2016 summer olympics. larry smith here to give us the scoop. so we're on pins and needles. >> this is so exciting. how often do you get a chance to be -- you know, as we're seeing right now, in daly plaza, yeah, in chicago, daly plaza they're preparing for the announcement here just about two and a half hours away. chicago never hosted an olympics before but at stake billions of dollars in revenue. priceless prestige that comes with being forever known as an olympic host. they're getting ready to party in chicago. i'm sorry. this actually is madrid. i didn't think it looked like daly plaza. this is madrid. they just completed their bid, the spanish congregation, the

spanish group the last of the four cities in the running and again, madrid also getting ready to party. they have never hosted an olympics before. now, the candidates will be eliminated one by one in a tense half hour of successive rounds of secret balloting by an international-dsht international olympic committee. chicago certainly a slight favorite, a superior technical bid including most of its venues built and near the popular downtown area and along lake michigan. madrid lost a bid to host both in 1972 and 2012 but their advantage, they have more than 70% of their venues already completed. rio was a sentimental favorite trying to become the first south american country to host the games. they hosted the 2007 panamerican games and they were a success. that helps them. many consider tokyo to be an outsider, the asian neighbor beijing just hosted summer olympics a year ago. but they pitched committee members about becoming a model of public safety and environmental responsibility to the world. they said, hey. we are the world's most exciting city. bring them here. we'll see what happens in a couple hours. moving on, michael vick will not

and other personnel, the venues not only in place but also the ones that need to be built must match specific criteria. security is an issue. transportation. doepg contro doping control. and of course money. how much money do you have and will your government make up for any overage? that happens quite a bit when you get to the end and try to finish off these projects. the decision will be made by committee members with little cur enlt knowledge of the four finalists because they are prohibited from visiting the cities to prevent bribery. virginia? >> larry, typically there is a favorite that emerges. who is the odds on favorite in this group? >> the favorite here you have to say really is chicago. it's a close call but just as tony blair's visit to the ioc four years ago gave london a final push at the wire ahead of odds on favorite paris president obama's pitch will resonate. he is extremely popular abroad. when i was in beijing last year it was overwhelming worldwide support for barack obama for the presidency and some believe his impassioned speech about chicago

and its massive parks, water front space and michigan avenue along with lake michigan with the picturesque skyline alongside of michigan avenue will play in the city's favor. chicago, a lot of hotels. if it's in the u.s. that's more ad dollars, more revenue going back to the ioc. they're my pick as the host for the 2016 games. we'll find out in a couple hours. >> thanks so much. speaking, let's take you to some new video this morning, a tape given to israel officials by the militant group hamas showing a thin but apparently healthy captured israeli soldier. he was kidnapped when palestinian militants crossed from gaza into israel. this is three years ago. in the video he reads from a newspaper dated september 14th. israel was given the tape today after it released 19 palestinian female prisoners who were being held at a detention camp outside of jerusalem. a mother is accused of being so drunk she passed out in her

parked minivan, leaving two toddlers to just get out of the car and wander away. broward county deputies say someone found those kids ages 3 and 4. they were miles from home, trying to cross a busy road. they then found the woman passed out in the van in her driveway. the judge openly scolded her in court. >> your children were found two miles away from you passed out in your driveway. and if that is not a danger to your children, then i don't know what is, ma'am. short of having a loaded gun with them, i don't know what's any more dangerous. >> she is charged with dui and child neglect. her husband, by the way, said, quote, she's stupid and indicated that the two wouldn't be married much longer. 16,000 nurses are suing to avoid being forced to take the new flu vaccine. the union for the group in washington says it opposes their hospital's new mandatory vaccination policy saying it needs to be supervised by the federal or state government.

the policy would make any nurses who don't get the vaccine wear a surgical mask while on duty. next week people in the samoan islands will say final fare wells to the more than 100 friends and family killed in tuesday's tsunami. the island is having a mass funeral. on american samoa some people will follow tradition by burying loved ones in their yards. one family said they'll bury their daughter with her backpack because she loves school. all right. i think that bob shoeld us earlier there is some rain out there. let's find out what we're talking about. there was this line moving across the country. >> yeah. it's actually fading apart which is good for the mid-atlantic but we'll see more rain develop on the back side of the low and you can see on the satellite picture here's the clouds wrapping up through minnesota through the dakotas as well. you have a low pressure region right about here with high pressure building in. the end result, it's going to be a windy day. we're talking about central nebraska, western kansas, parts of the dakotas and wyoming.

winds gusting easily 35 to 40 miles per hour for the afternoon. but underneath that high, on the west side of that, temperatures have been extremely cool at the start of the day even for this time of the year. we're looking at freeze warnings just south of denver now. freeze warnings all the areas sha shaded in purple. in denver the mid to low 20s. so a cold start. getting up to 32 now. 33 in grand junction. it's going to heat up quickly now for areas by l.a. so high fire danger area. once again mainly for areas north of los angeles in the mountains and the valleys you're looking at a low humidity day again, humidity levels probably in the teens to single digits by this afternoon. gusty winds, winds gusting agaent again. it's going to be warm. temperatures into the low 90s. not 100s but still on the warm side. here's the thin line of rain we're talking about before, notice all the clouds wrapping up out of the gulf of mexico. heavy rain for the gulf coast this morning should spread back in towards atlanta late thoern afternoon.

police in chicago are investigating the beating of another teenager. a witness told police the 14-year-old was chased down by three other teenagers wednesday night. he is now in critical condition. this is coming just a week after a 16-year-old was beaten to death in that city. do you remember the facebook poll we told you about earlier this week that asked whether president obama should be killed? well, the secret service says it was a kid behind the prank. the secret service determined there was no threat, though, to the president after the agents met with the juvenile and the parents. the juvenile won't be prosecuted. the secret service is not identifying this child, the parents, or where they live.

so maybe you, maybe someone you know, may be running out of unemployment benefits and are counting on the government to pass an extension. well, our money expert jennifer westhoven is looking out for you. some people are wondering, what's the holdup in congress? >> so many families, virginia, are relying on this money. it's all they have to make ends meet. the plan would mean 13 more weeks of checks for people in some states. not all of them but the hardest hit states. it did pass the house of representatives but then it goes to the senate and that's where the road block was. and the whole thing is that the extension would be in states that are in red where unemployment is more than 8.5%. there you see them. what happens is the senators from the other states, the white states, are barking, saying, hey, that's not fair to the people who live in our states. maybe they should get the extension, too. now, look. the bill is not dead yet so they may work out a compromise. i will keep you posted on any developments on this but a lot of families of course seeing their benefits run out.

for every job open right now there are six people looking. very tough times to get a job. no doubt about it. let's bring you some good news. your heating bill this winter, believe it or not, could be down from what you paid last year. it could look a little easier to you. the government says, well, you know, with factories running on low they're using less gas. they've got a lot of supply. the government is storing more natural gas than it ever has. you know what that means with supply and demand. a lot of supply. good for prices. natural gas prices down about 8% yesterday. so you may see that. some gas suppliers already cut their rates. more are likely to follow. i wanted to give you something good along with the tough job news today. >> we like that. it's already starting to get cold in some places so definitely good news there. thanks, jen. okay. so a 10-year-old girl did something that is a no-no on ebay. she tried to sell her grandmother. london's daily mail reports the girl said her grandmother was, quote, annoying and moaning a lot. she said grandma can be very cuddly and loves word searches.

the girl says it was a joke. she was just trying to get someone to help care for her disabled grandmother. bidding, though, actually hit about $30,000 before ebay shut down the auction tuesday. grandma says she's worth millions. i bet she is. a husband and wife raising a stink over how their home was trashed. how they say raw meat helped them expose a phony landlord. we'll explain.

so support for abortion rights has fallen significantly since last year from 54% to 47%. a new survey from a nonpartisan research group now shows americans are pretty much split on this issue. the group first noticed a shift in april and one of the authors says president obama may be the reason because conservatives may be worried he'll go too far in supporting abortion rights and those on the left are relaxing their views. a married couple says someone put raw meat in the walls of their house to stink up the place. they say their las vegas home

was vacant. an unauthorized renter trashed the place. a man is accused of being a phony landlord and renting out their empty home. >> it's crazy. anybody can just leave out of town for a few weeks or whatever it may be and they come back and their house could be gone. somebody could be living here. so it's just odd. it's crazy. >> so the man is accused of collecting rent on several homes he doesn't own. no twitter and now no radio show for one star athlete, larry smith, so what is going on here? the nfl can't twitter and now this guy can't do a radio show. what's up? this actually does make some sense. jacksonville quarterback david garrard has had his radio show nixed by his head coach jack del rio. the show aired the last three fridays. that's two days before game day. now, del rio says doing media stuff early in the week to rehash the previous game is okay but, hey, listen, late in the

week getting close to game time players should be devoted to studying the game plans and spending time with family and garrard says he understands. no more shows on friday. the earthquake and tsunami has wreaked havoc on samoa and american samoa and has resonated among the college football community here in the u.s. dozens of college football players are samoan. in fact, the university of utah defensive tackle lost eight family members in the tragedy and one of his team mates on the utah team lost three close relatives. the utah coach says the school is doing whatever it can to help those players. well, maybe the video of the moment. we've ad those embarrassing moments. here's one. end of a high school football game in vermont the team that's losing, 16-14, misses a game-winning field goal. oert team is celebrating but that's a live ball. what are you doing? the spike in celebration turns into a fumble. the other team picks it up, scores a touchdown, they win the game at the gun. oh, 20-16. as for this guy, he'll come back in his tenth, 15th, 20th reunion and be the guy who fumbled the

were going to have a trial, isn't that what happened, and then he left? >> i don't know. do you think i follow that legal stuff. >> don't you have to, don't you have to plow through nancy grace. isn't there something you've got to do there as you're running. did you hear what they found in the trunk?! >> nancy grace, of course, airs at 8:00, the hour before joy behar's show, 9:00 p.m. eastern right here on hln. a teenager who lost his leg in a rocket attack in gaza is walking without crutches for the first time in five years. the 15-year-old got a prosthetic leg after a donation from the palestinian children's relief fund. the teen is staying in washington state with a host family, taking classes too. he'll return to his family in gaza in about six months. so education secretary arne duncan says federal stimulus money for education is meant to be extra dollars for schools, but he says some states are cutting their own education spending and using that stimulus money to make up for it.

duncan says the states will be held accountable, but because of the way the law is written, there may not be much federal officials can actually do. penicillin may be using its punch against common diseases. plus, two off-duty officers were at the right place to rescue a young girl at a busy park opinion.

& kate plus 8." you heard me right. just days after being fired by tlc, jon is now refusing, yes, refusing to let tlc into the house to shoot the show. these extraordinary brand-new developments today made for big news breaking. listen to this, tlc suspended production on "jon & kate plus 8" today after jon gosselin fired a cease and desist order, demanding they that stop taping the reality show. he even posted a sign on the front gates of his house telling them, hey, get lost. he says he's doing this to protect the kids. but that's not what kate says. she fired back at jon today saying he never had a problem with the kids being on tv until he got fired from the show. "showbiz tonight" wants to know who side of this story are you buying? but, wait, there's more. tlc, they're having none of this. today they lashed out at jon. they called him erratic, self-destructive, and unprofessional. i tell you, it's an all-out battle. and of course, "showbiz tonight"

dares to ask, is the gosselin family officially imploding? joining me tonight in hollywood, carlos diaz, a correspondent for "extra." tonight in new york, midwynn charles, an attorney with midwynn charles and associates. it is official. this is outright war between jon and kate. jon today posted this notice right there on the front gates of the home that he and kate own together, banning all tlc cameras from the property. jon is saying, basically, he wants to end the show for the good of the kids. he wants to protect them. this is what his lawyer tells entertainment tonight, and this is astonishing to me. "jon realized his family was like a train wreck, so he decided to put the brakes on the divorce and on the show, because if he didn't, the family would be in a mortal accident, the victims of a train wreck." carlos, i hear what's going on, i read that statement and i'm thinking, something stinks here, considering that just two days ago, tlc fired him from the show and they changed the name, of course, from "jon & kate plus 8" to "kate plus 8."

is jon just asking like a man scorned? >> exactly. that's exactly what he's acting like. how many times have we seen one parent say to another parent in a divorce, if you're going to act that way, you can't see the kids this weekend. now we have jon telling tlc, if you're going to act that way, you can't see the kids on tv ever. it's a terrible example of childi childish behavior from jon gosselin. tlc is handling this wrong. get the kids out of the equation and have jon and kate working through their divorce on camera, instead of on abc, instead of on all these different shows. get that on tlc. that's why your ratings are tanking, because we're not believing this rosy image that you have of kate playing with the kids in the front yard anymore. we're not believing it. >> you're talking there, carlos, and i'm noticing the great irony that jon, through his behavior, is trying to protect the kids, but this very behavior is setting a terrible example for the kids. and now kate is striking back and she's also suggesting, the

only reason that he's doing this is because he got fired. you've got to hear what kate told "showbiz tonight" late this afternoon. she said it very clearly, i'm saddened and confused by jon's public media statements. jon has never expressed any concerns to me about our children being involved in the show and, in fact, is on the record as saying he believes the show benefits our children and was taping on friday with the kids. and kate went on to say, jon used to share that belief, until as recently as the day the network announced the name change of the show and indicated that jon would have a lesser role in the show. m midwynn, kate is clearly upset. whose side of the story are you buying? >> it's so obvious that jon is not trying to do anything here but protect his check. jon is upset they pulled the plug on him and the show, so he's lashing back in one of the few ways that he can. look how quickly he did this too. it almost sounds as if this was

something that was approachabpo brewing over time. the swiftness and quickness as to how they went into court and got the cease and desist, oh, my goodness. >> it happened lightning fast. kate's not making this stuff up. "showbiz tonight" has dug up the proof to back up what kate is saying here. jon did go on the record about the kids only a few weeks ago. he told abc's prime-time that they were totally fine taping the show. you've got to watch this. >> do you ever think about whether the show is the right thing for the kids? if the kids were telling you, we don't want it anymore, you would stop it? >> i would stop it. i'm not going to make them -- >> that doesn't wash. you tell them what to do, they're your kids. they're 5 and they're 8. >> they're not being forced to film, if that's what you're getting at. >> carlos, jon knows that he said that and it really makes him look like a big old doofus. >> what kind of legal advice is he getting when he says, let's put out this statement and the lawyer says, yeah, great, we'll put out this statement, when the lawyer should know, your client just said on national tv and in

several other instances, the kids don't mind taping. it's obvious he is just trying to get back at tlc by using his own kids. >> and by the way, doofus is the clinical term that i've chose ton use tonight. no surprise, tlc was not at all happy with the cease and desist order that jon put out there, demanding that the show be shut down. tlc responded by suspending production today, but then they let jon have it. they just slammed him in this statement. listen to this. "we are aware of jon gosselin's recent statements and remain deeply disappointed at his continued erratic behavior. his latest comments are grossly inaccurate, without merit, and are clearly opportunistic." i must point out, until now, tlc has always been very publicly supportive of jon. now i hear this real 180. i hear they are sweating bullets that their biggest show has gone down the tubes. but midwin, it is jon's house, not tlc's house, so if he was going to get back at tlc for canning him from the show, this is the way to do it.

>> it really is. he is the second half of that family, of the marriage, and he does have a say in what happens to the children. they're not divorced yet, there's no custody issue yet. so he does have a say as to whether or not the children can be in the show. now, that said, not only did he say in his interview that he had no problem with the children being filmed, but his actions also belie that -- you know, support that statement. he has been filmed almost every single day up until this week. so it just makes no sense and has to credibility. >> an unbelievable contradiction. so what do you think? did jon deserve to get fired from the show? this is exactly what we asked in our "showbiz tonight" question of the day. late today, the very first wave of results came in. a huge response on this one, we asked on air and online. jon gosselin, did he deserve to be fired from jon and kate? look at this, 75% said yes, it was a good thing. 25% said no. i must point out, not everybody is behind kate here. our "showbiz tonight" facebook wall lit up today. look at this from shalean b.

today, i had to ask the rabbi what he was thinking when michael dropped that bombshell. also, brand-new insight today into how michael's relationship with his father nearly crippled his career. rabbi shmuley unveiled today the never-before-heard details. and in more big news breaking, i asked the rabbi, point-blank, if he is betraying michael by releasing these tapes so soon after his death. i am telling you, after this interview, you will never see michael jackson the same way again. i would like to listen to a little bit of what we heard on "dateline" when they played what i believe was really the most explosive description of michael jackson describing the abuse by his father. let's listen to that. >> he would make you strip nude first. he would oil you down -- it would be a whole ritual. he would oil you down so when the flip of the ironing cord hit you, it would just,, you know -- and it was just like me dying. and you had whips all over your

face, your back, everywhere. and i could always hear my mother, no, joe, you're going to kill him, no. i would always just give up. there's nothing i could do, you know. and i hated him for it, hated him. >> it's so strong and so powerful. and stunning to hear such vivid description of something we had only heard talked about before. you were sitting right there across from him. how do you react when you hear him describing how he was beat? >> even when i hear it now, it's painful, because it shows a side of michael that is so contradictory to the superstar who played before millions of fans. i don't think michael was ever known as a man. i don't think we ever understood his brokenness. i think we judged him and we rejected him. but even he never rejected his father completely after that clip. the clip ends by saying, i love him today, but he was hard. michael yearned for a relationship with his father. i think it's what he most

wanted. >> but there were so many conflicts. this is what michael's life seemed to be about. these conflicts. on one happened, he said he hated his father, but in the book you say how michael says he loved his father. and the tape i want to play right now, on "larry king live," where he talks about how he wanted his father dead and how he could picture him in a coffin. >> i'll never forget this. i would say, janet, shut your eyes. she would go, okay, they're shut. i say, picture joseph in a coffin, he's dead, do you feel sorry? she would say, no. that's what we would do as kids. we would play games like that. she would say, nope, just like that. that's how hateful we were. i would say, he's in the coffin, he's dead, would you feel sorry? and she would go, nope. just like that. that's how angry we were with him. and i love him today, but he was hard. >> again, there's that contrast. i loved him, he was hard. and we imagine him dead and didn't feel anything. how do you react to that?

that's not something that kids joke around about, it seems to me. >> it's not just that there was what michael alleges physical violence. more than anything else, it was michael feeling that his father was making him into a performer. he wanted to be loved unconditionally for who he was and not what he did. i think that in his mind, he was being given not affection, not love, but attention. and attention is for your talents. and love is for your being. and that's why he yearned for his father's love so much. of course, it's contradictory. many of us have this love/hate relationship with parents. michael yearned throughout his life for his father to embrace him. one of the most moving parts of the book is where he says, you know, we're going to reconcile one day. i know it's going to happen, but i have to overcome a lot. and what most undermined his lust for life, in my opinion, is that that reconciliation never took place. >> i want to go back to the part you talk about where he felt so hurt by being treated as a commodity. how his brothers were treated as commodities as well. and in this portion of the tape,

that we heard on "dateline," he describes to you exactly how much that troubled him. let's listen to that. >> did you begin to feel like you were a money-making machine for him? >> yes. i'll never forget, one day he said, if you guys ever stop singing, i'll drop you like a hot potato. that's what he said. it hurt me. you don't say that to children. and i never forgot it. >> rabbi shmuley, do you get the impression, or did you at the time, that michael was more hurt by being treated as a money-making machine than he was by the actual beatings that he suffered at his father's hands. >> i think the two were inextricably linked. and the reason he shared these painful memories is that he wanted us to extract a lesson and apply to our children, to how we raise our own kids. this show called is "showbiz tonight." america loves showbiz, america loves performers and entertainers. but we'll really dosed a little bit on fame and celebrity. for michael, fame became his drug of choice.

he couldn't completely relinquish it. he understood that contradiction. there were always two michael jacksons. there was this soft, shy, soft-spoken boy from gary, indiana, and there was the king of pop. what these tapes s unearth is real michael jackson, the boy. you have the other side of it. i say to him, point-blank, michael, since you yearn so much for the childhood you were never granted. since you wanted to be on the monkey bars when you were in the recording studio, would you give it up, and he said, no, i would never give it up. so it became an addiction. he understood it, and i understood it. he was causing us to question our values. and i think that's why this book has been met with such a jarring response by so many in the public. we really want to believe this lie, if you become rich and famous enough, you're going to be happy, yet michael was utterly, utterly miserable. >> obviously, rabbi shmuley,

you're not blind to some of the backlash that has been going on over your releasing this book at this time. you have said, you feel it is important to teach lessons f, f michael's life to be redemptive, to get this book out at this time. i'm hearing from a lot of people, a lot of fans of "showbiz tonight," after we initially played some of the recordings, they're saying, you know what, he just died a couple of months ago. so how do you convince people now who might be questioning your motives that this is not yet another betrayal of michael, because he speaks and we see a lot of this in the book, how he was betrayed left and right by people who were supposed to be looking after his best interests? >> this is not a memoir, in my opinion, of michael jackson. these are not my recollections. this is michael in his own voice. the tapes speak for himself. when a man sit downs for 30 hours and he's holding a dictaphone and he wants every word captured because he feels he's never been understood by the public, obviously he's saying it because he wants people to take his words to heart. this is michael in his own

words. the books speak for themselves, the tapes speak for themselves. >> so now how do you think michael would feel about the fact that these tapes, which were his thoughts of some eight, nine years ago, how would he feel about them being released now? >> i believe that looking down from heaven, now that michael can see, that his own voice actually changed so many hearts, i think that's exactly what michael wanted and i'm thrilled that that is the impact the book is having. michael deserves to be heard. we deserve to mourn a man. we deserve to understand that his tragedy is not just a personal tragedy, it's an american tragedy. he was the stuff of the american dream. >> well, further to those skeptics, the rabbi also said that a substantial portion of proceeds of his new book will go to family charities, including his own called "this world: the jewish values network." the rabbi's book, "the michael jackson tapes." tonight, there's so much shocking star news, i don't know

larceny, a first-degree class "c" felony, punishable by up to 5 to 15 years. tom o'neil is a senior editor with "in touch weekly." joins us now from new york. tom, great to talk to you. what do you think about this bombshell, about the way letterman presented it? >> it was presented masterfully, don't you think? he built it up with great drama. at first, he was very serious that this was terrible stuff. he warned us about that. the audience tirted nervously as he told the story. he told jokes here and there. but then he built to a fun ending. he ended with a proper mix of respectful attention, but also with his usual flipness. i think he came out pretty well. >> yeah, he said this was scary for my family and i, there were some tense moments. do you think, tom, that there's more to this that will come out, more to the scandal? he said it may become public, and then he cracked a joke about

how it would be embarrassing about the woman that he's been with. do you think there's more to this that we'll hear about in the coming days and weeks? >> i think that's what everyone's underplaying right now and it could get really back. something was in that package in the backseat of letterman's car that began this extortion case that someone thought was terrible, terrible enough to use letterman's worth, that it was worth $2 million. now, there are reports that came out in the last few hours that what was in the box were letters and diary stuff and photographs from a woman named stephanie burkette who is the recent ex of the suspect accused of extortion here, who was with him between 2003 and recently and before that was letterman's assistant and was with him. if all this reads as the evidence looks like, she looked for letterman, had a relationship with him, kept evidence, took it with her into this new relationship with the extortion suspect, who when he broke up with her, than took it

to letterman and said, hey, this is pretty incriminating stuff. i want some money. >> we could hear a lot more in the coming days. tom, you've covered stories before celebrities, i guess you could say, confessing, apologizing on late-night tv, hugh grant comes to mind. but never the host himself before. do you think it will hurt his career, hurt letterman? >> as things stand now, because what he's famous for is he's a rogue and a rascal, but if this gets really dark, i think it could hurt him. let me ask you, susan, what do you think? >> i think no. i think for a while he's been band leno in the ratings and now leno moving to 10:00, i think he still has his followers, for all these years, and i think he'll be okay out of this scandal. you know, hollywood loves a comeback. >> they love a comeback, but what if these letters have very serious evidence of sexual harassment? >> then it could change. we'll see. i guess in the next week, we'll find out a whole lot the next coming weeks.

yair anthony carrillo every hour, but are getting more worried every hour that pass because they're not sure the person that took him knows how to care for the newborn baby. the baby's mother said a heavyset woman with white hair went up to her home posing as an immigration agent. she stabbed her repetedly with a kitchen knife and took the baby. they have a sketch based on her description, but aren't ready to release it to the public yet. and they have evidence that someone in a kia specktra followed her home. a south florida mom is accused of being so drunk, she passed out in her parked mini van, leaving two toddlers in the car and she let them wander away because she was passed out. broward county deputies say someone found the kids, ages 3

and 4, miles from home, trying to cross a busy street, if you can imagine. they found the woman passed out in her van in her driveway. she is charged with dui and child neglect. her husband refused to post her bail and said, quote, she is stupid. rescue teams in indonesia are scrambling to find survivors in the rubble of flattened buildings again today. we have stories of incredible rescues two days after a deadly quake there and a grim assessment from the government on the number of people that may still be trapped. let's head to that news conference i just mentioned out of nashville on looking for the newborn baby. let's take a listen. >> -- white and heavyset in her 30s with a blond ponytail, black shirt and blue jeans, posing as an immigration worker enters maria carrillo home. witnesses see a dark, small car that witness a police vehicle on east ridge drive at the time of the attack.

investigators have thoroughly worked this case from the very beginning. every lead that has come into local, state, and federal authorities has been and is being followed and evaluated. dozens of agents, officers, and analysts from the national police department, the tennessee bureau of investigation, and the federal bureau of investigation are working around the clock to find yair. today, investigators are releasing a composite sketch of the suspect. details in this sketch were provided by maria to a tbi composite sketch artist. this is the best information we have as to the facial features of the suspect. additionally, today, electronic billboards in the southeast region of the united states will feature the composite sketch of the suspect and a picture of the yair. the fbi will list information about the case on youtube, facebook, and twitter accounts.

responsibilities associated with caring for a newborn baby can be overwhelming. we are asking the person or persons who have yair to please return him to a safe place such as a local hospital or give him to a relative who can make a safe return. anyone with information about his disappearance is urged to call 1-800-tbi-find. at this time, i'm going to introduce protector officer raphael hernandez, who's going to read this statement in spanish for our hispanic-speaking community. and then we'll take questions. >> all right. authorities in nashville, as we mentioned, are looking for a woman that took a newborn baby in tennessee. the mother, maria carrillo says a heavyset woman with blond hair stabbed her multiple times and took this little newborn baby. we are still awaiting a sketch

of the suspect. again, she's blond, heavyset. that is how she is described. we are waiting for police to release that sketch to the public. but, again, they said if anyone has any information, to please bring that baby or convince the person who took the baby to the authorities, because it is very difficult to care for a newborn. we'll have much more after the break.

officials in indonesia say 3,000 people may still be trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings after wednesday's powerful earthquake there. rescuers are still finding survivors, including this woman seen here who was trapped under piles of debris at her collapsed college for almost two days. she did survive. you see her there. this amateur video was taken moments after the roof of the sports facility collapsed during karate practice. students struggling to crawl out. wednesday's quake had a magnitude of 7.6. it killed 1,100 people.

officials say that number will probably go even higher since so many people are still missing. and in the south pacific, mass burials are being planned for victims of tuesday's earthquake and smtsunami there. at least 169 people were killed on samoa, american samoa, and tanga. homes, beachfront villages and beaches were wiped out by monster waves. survivors say they'll never forget the noise from the roar of the water and the sound of everything around them crashing down down. the united states, australia, and new zealand have sent supplies and troops to help out. the drinking water supply is the most pressing matter right now since so many water pipes were completely destroyed. last night david letterman revealed he was the target of an extortion attempt and said it involved some pretty personal stuff, but was his monologue the appropriate place to make the revelation? we're asking for your views on

a tennessee father is still behind bars in japan, charged with kidnapping his own two children. christopher savoie says his ex-wife is the one breaking the law when she fled to japan with the children, a u.s. court gave him sole kid of the kids. well, he went to japan to try to get them back, but he was arrested and put in jail. his current wife, amy, says he went there because he loves his children. >> of course he loves those children. look at these pictures. i mean, i've never seen them on the big screen like this before. i took these pictures and you cannot fake that kind of affection. they're nestled in his arms. he is just grabbing those kids. the smiles are huge. they're eyes are smiling. these children love their father. they love their father. >> savoie and his ex-wife were divorced back in january after 14 years of marriage. >> south florida mother is accused of being so drunk she passed out in her parked minivan, leaving two toddlers to wander away, leave the minivan.

broward county deputy says someone found the kids, ages 3 and 4, miles from home trying to cross a busy street. they found the woman passed out in her fan in her driveway. she is charged with dui and child neglect. her husband failed to post her bail and said, quote, she's stupid. i'm jane velez-mitchell and here's my issue. a new york city cop is accused of killing an incident woman while allegedly driving drunk behind the wheel and the nypd officers investigating the crime are either covering something up or they're just totally incompetent. either way, they sabotaged the investigation. the cop allegedly wreaked of booze and was slurring his speech, but law enforcement waited seven hours and 20 minutes to give him a sobriety test. big surprise, by the time he was finally tested, the driver had zero alcohol in his system. now, this cop's attorney even had the chutzpah to call him a hero because he was performing
