school kids. that visit prompted by the death of 16 year old derrion albert, the honor student found beaten to death walking to a bus step. albert's death was a tragic and sad occasion. the obama administration plans to tackle the problem of school violence head-on. >> i came here not out of sadness but with hope and compassion for our children. i came here because i believe in chicago's capacity to deal with this openly, honestly and directly. this is my home. this is the city i grew up in. where i played ball. i tutored children at church on the south side basement. my friends are here. my family is here. i learned everything i know in these communities and in these schools. i learned about character. this is a city that never gives up when it is challenged. this is a city that always unites in the face of adversity. a city that produced great leaders and thinkers, a great mayor and america's first black and men and women shaping the future and giving real

meaning to the words courage, strength and pride. chicago won't be defined by this incident but rather by our response to it. >> arne duncan was the chicago school superintendent. the violent death captured on cell phone video. four teens charged in his death and police are searching for more suspects. today is the eighth anniversary of the war against al qaeda and the war in afghanistan. eight years and running. a new poll suggests public support for the war is dwindling. now at 40%. it had been 44% in july according to a new associated press gfk poll. 800 american troops have been killed in the war and in washington there's widespread debate about the next step in afghanistan. a new commander in chief is now in charge of the fight. president obama is meeting with his national security team to discuss what to do about the war. he's ruled out withdrawing forces but has not announced whether he'll add to the number of troops in afghanistan. the president is also hearing what lawmakers are saying about

the matter. >> i think what the president now needs to do is take the time so that he's comfortable with the decision that he needs to make, what he then needs to do is make sure that he leads and leads boldly in a mission that needs to be successful outlying his case to the american people and outline his resources to execute the strategy that he select. we need had him to lead now. >> if you look at history, i can think of no incident where holding back forces and reducing forces or lending your forces led to a successful mission and led to victory. i really think that the president is going to have to listen to general mcchrystal. he's his man. he's his pick. >> the white house says the president won't base decision on the mood of capitol hill or eroding public support for the war. police arrested more than 60 people during anti-war protests outside of the white house.

the protesters carried signs and coffins draped with u.s. flags. waterboarding demonstrations. many claimed they supported the president but oppose sending more u.s. troops to afghanistan. >> he escalates the war and i'll be deeply disappointed. >> we have great hopes and we feel those hopes are being dashed. "the washington post" reports they are marking the eighth anniversary with dozens of rallies across the country today. the obama administration will have a hard team meeting the deadline to close guantanamo bay prison. the president promised to shut it down by next january but it may not happen because so many members of congress don't want terror suspects transferred to stateside jails. holder is trying to convince lawmakers those transfers would be safe. you might be able to wear shoes again through airport security. homeland security is looking at a new screening technique that might focus on body signals like

eye movement, heart rate or if you are seen fidgeting. researches say those signs could indicate if you're up to something and need secondary screening. >> there's been a large field of research that ties your reaction, your physical reactions to your mental state and emotional state. we're looking for those signals that your body gives off naturally. >> it is an invasion of privacy. nobody has a right to look at my intimate bodily functions from afar. >> you just heard the aclu against it and some critics say technology is all-together impractical. looks like tropical storm henri won't be around much longer. it's weakening and will probably run out of steam by tomorrow. henri is the eighth named storm of the atlanta hurricane season. right now in the central atlantic with maximum winds at 45 miles an hour. the u.s. supreme court today is hearing a case involving the display of religious symbols on federal property. it's a case involving a cross that's been around for 75 years. it was built in the mojave

national preserve. federal courts ruled that cross violates the ban against the government endorsement of religion. this case could make an important statement about the separation of church and state. parents who prayed rather than taking their dying daughter for help will be going to jam. they were sentenced to six months in jail and ten years probation. they could have gotten up to 25 years in prison. they died from a treatable form of diabetes. the judge called the decision not to get medical help reckless. sometimes infidelity is a deal breaker and sometimes it is not. share your views.

from flooding already crowded emergency rooms. a bipartisan gathering of lawmakers today on capitol hill for the unveiling of a bronze statue of helen keller. it shows keller as a 7-year-old child holding one hand under water. it's meant to depict the moment in 1887 when her teacher, ann sullivan, spelled it into her other hand and she made the connection between the actions. helen keller lost her hearing and sight to illness but she learned to speak and write and earn a college degree. a 5-year-old girl in phoenix is lucky to be alive after falling into a glass table and it shattered. a big piece of glass punched her lung and liver but somehow she managed to survive. her parents weren't sure how bad it was at first. her doctor says it really was a close call. >> when i saw the injury and my wife told me she removed a piece

of situation of church and state. the mystery is less mysterious. a discovery is drawing attention at cnn.com. catherine callaway is here with more. how did this come about? >> there are so many questions about stonehenge. it's been a question that may have been answered with the discovery of this new site that's not too far from the original stonehenge. archaeologist believed it was erected around 2500 b.c. they think the discovery of another circle of stones may lead them to believe that stonehenge was part of a big burial site. this is not too far at all. it's about a mile from the original stonehenge. the new site called the blue stonehenge because of the

80% of credit cards carried a fixed interest rate. today more than 85% are carrying a variable interest rate. we've seen a swift dramatic change here. new credit card laws are going to take effect in february. with a variable rate card, your interest rate is tied to another rate. like the prime rate. right now the prime rate is quite low. as the economy recovers it's going to go up. shop around as always for the best rate. find some cards that will charge you say 7% plus the prime rate. another card may charge you 13% plus the prime rate. don't need to be a math major to know which is a better deal, especially if your carry a balance. >> any recourse for consumers? >> there is another trend to look out for. the return of the annual fee. very few cards have been charging annual fees.

a judge in orlando has just ruled that attorneys for lisa nowak can again question colleen shipman. a judge said the depositions must be completed by the first of december. the defense wants the judge to drop one of three charges against noe nowak. they say the pepper spray she allegely wielded is not a danger weapon. nowak is also charged with attempted kidnapping and battery with assault. jury selection is expected to begin on december 7th.

his national security team today to discuss what to do next. he's ruled out withdrawing forces, but has not decided whether he will add to the number of troops in afghanistan. yesterday, the president discussed afghanistan with lawmakers. the white house says the president base his decision on the moved capitol hill or eroding public support for the war. police have arrested more than 60 people during antiwar protests outside of the white house. the protesters carried signs and coffins draped with u.s. flags. some traumatized waterboarding, a so-called enhance interrogation technique. many demonstrators claim they support president obama, but they oppose sending more u.s. troops to afghanistan. >> he escalates the war, i'll be deeply disappointed. >> we had great hopes and we feel that those hopes being dashed. >> the washington post reports with dozens all around the country today.

lawmakers have reached a compromise that could clear the way for shutting down the prison at guantanamo bay. democratic negotiators are proposing this, to allow detainees into the u.s. to face trial. however, they wouldn't be aloud to serve their centses here and cannot be released into the u.s. president obama promised to close the detention center by january. both the house and the senate would have to approve that compromise plan. parents who prayed rather than taking their dying daughter to get help, they're going to jail. a wisconsin court sentenced the couple to six months in jail and ten years' probation. they could have gotten up to 25 years in prison. the girl died of a treatable form of diabetes. the judge called her parents' decision, not to get help, reckless. a judge in orlando has ruled that attorneys are presenting former astronaut lisa nowak, can, again, question colleen shipman. the judge says the depositions

must be completed by december 1st. nowak is charged with attacking shipman over a love interest. the defense wants the judge drop one of three charges against now nowak. burglary with an assault or battery with a weapon. they say the pepper spray she allegedly used is not a dangerous weapon. jury selection is expected to begin december 7th. oorg, we're going to warn you this next story, it can contain some very graphic information. you might, if you have children in the room with you, you might want them to least room. okay, police are investigating some shocking allegations of child sexual abuse and bestiality in a small town in oregon. the suspect is in jail. the parents are concerned that a child sex ring may had been operating in their neighborhood. ann jagr from affiliate kgw in portland reports.

>> reporter: make their way to school in the small town of newburgh. parents in this neighborhood are disgusted by what may have happened inside this home. >> it gives me a false sense of security. >> reporter: newburgh police say this man, 44-year-old darrin daily is the ringleader in a child sex case. detectives say in early september, he placed an ad on craigslist asking if people were interested in having sex with minor, one 14 and the other 15. these four responded to thead. gave one the teens drugs and alcohol and forced thorhave sex with the adults even his dog. >> but i'm appalled to live next door to that, obviously. >> reporter: sherry donaldson lives in the same duplex as daily. >> i did notice there was a lot of traffic. a pretty rough-looking crowd. >> reporter: if this story can't get any worse, newburgh police say they found photographs on his computer.

reform bill it will cost. this number is coming to us from the congressional budget office. it is an estimate of the senate finance committee's health care bill. because there's a few proposals out there but this one, in particular, the estimate is that it's going to cost $829 billion over ten years. the estimate is also, that it's going to cover 94% of americans excluding illegal immigrants. so we wanted to get those -- get those numbers to you. all right, it's easy you could see why rush-hour traffic came to a standstill, little rock, arkansas, today. rubber necking at that suv. it was dangling off of a ramp. this is interstate 630. driver's side rear wheel was actually suspended over the side of the ramp. you could see rescue crews had to get that taken care of. we don't know how the driver is actually doing. but that is an unusual sight there.

a giant ring around saturn no one has seen before. it's huge, large enough to hold a billion earths. unlike saturn's other rings it is almost invisible because the ice and dust that form it are so spread out and tilted at a 27 degree angle. nasa's space telescope detected it in the infrared spectrum. more to come on hln.
