is the backdrop now for president obama's intense review of the war and really how to continue fighting it. today, he is meeting with vice president joe biden and secretary of state hillary clinton this afternoon to discuss his different options. but he also reviewing this report. this report is from the afghanistan commander there, general stanley mcchrystal. and it lays out possible stages of military escalation, talking about adding possibly anywhere from between 10,000 to 40,000 more u.s. troops. mcchrystal strongly recommends the highest number. and we are asking you to weigh in on this story today. who do you think president obama should listen to? we'll have that conversation coming up in just about 15 minutes time. call us and let us know. a lot of strong opinions on both sides of the aisle there on that story. people who live in a small new hampshire town are horrified by an attack that left a 42-year-old nurse dead and her 11-year-old daughter in the hospital. four teenagers are accused of

bursting into their home, armed with a machete. our affiliate has this story. >> reporter: the procession moved forward in silence, hundreds of residents, friends, family and neighbors turning out to show love and report for the kates family after the deadly home invasion attack that left the mother dead and her 11-year-old critically injured. the kates' daughter is one of this girl's closest friends. >> i wanted to say she's the best friend i've ever had. i love her and she's awesome. >> reporter: burns says her sixth grade classroom hasn't been the same. >> i sit next to her empty seat and every time i sit there, it just reminds me of her and tears me apart. >> reporter: the crowd gathered at the fire department to pray and leave messages of support for david kates and his daughter as she recovered in the hospital.

alexis couldn't hold back the tears. >> that's when it came to me that she was gone. that shows how much of a wonderful person she was. >> reporter: she says she is the kates' babysitter. >> to know that she's hurt is just horrible. >> reporter: while showing the kates family how much their neighbors care, organizers of the vigil also want to help the neighbors heal. >> we want them to heal. >> reporter: there is considerable anger. >> how humans can do something like that, it's a barbaric act. >> that was adam sexton of our affiliate reporting. the four suspects are all still in jail. two of them were ordered to be held on $500,000 bond. the other two were denied bail entirely. many parents apparently don't want their kids to get the h1n1 flu vaccine as it is now

becoming available. in fact, more than a third of parents 38% here, polled by the "associated press" said they're unlikely to give permission for their own children to be vaccinated at school. many are concerned about the side effects. here's what researchers are saying. no serious complications turned up during the testing phase of the h1n1 vaccine. nearly all americans, though, do have some traces of the chemical bpa in their systems. many people believe it is toxic. but it's found in hundreds of everyday products ranging from kitchen appliances to toy, even baby bottles. but now a new study suggests baby girls exposed to bpa in the womb are suffering years later as toddlers. cnn's senior medical correspondent, elizabeth cohen, talked about this issue earlier today. >> they tried to measure how much bpa pregnant women had in their systems while they were pregnant and then got in touch

with those women two years later. women with the highest amounts of bpa while they were pregnant were more likely to have 2-year-old daughters to be aggressive, not sons, but daughters. there's lots of limitations to the study. certain things they didn't measure that perhaps they should have. but it might give one more positive about bpa even than ever before. >> and the co-author of the study said there was already enough evidence to show that pregnant women should reduce their exposure to bpa. president obama hosting white house basketball court. this afternoon the president will be hosting a group of four cabinet members and 11 congressmen for a game of hoops. among those attending, interior secretary ken salazar, tim geithner and baron hill of north carolina. republican congressman john shimkus and jeff flake will be

playing as well. the president's got some moves. tip-off scheduled for 5:00 at the white house. historically speaking, when u.s. troops have gone to war, they've done so over ideological differences with other countries. but environmentalists are saying future conflicts could be over a shortage of natural researches. barbara starr is taking a look at how the military is responding. >> reporter: around the globe, 600 million people are without enough fresh water or cropland to sustain themselves. that's the latest finding of the u.s. intelligence community andand it's about to get worse. by 2025, nearly 1.5 billion people will be in dire straits and climate change is making it all worse. the looming question? could it all lead to war? >> climate change will force people because their economic livelihoods will be threatened

to begin to move. and when people move and you see a shortage of resources, what that potentially engenders is conflict over resources. >> reporter: at the u.s. defense department, the prospect of conflict over diminishing resources as a result of climate change is now part of military planning. for the first time, it will be considered in an upcoming military report to congress. >> when we look at climate change and when you look around the globe, you see three key factors. you see rising temperature changes. you see rising sea level changes. and then you see increased intensity of extreme weather events. because of those, you see implications as far as food security, water security, increased disease factors, increased ecological changes. there's a full range of changes in the future security environment that we need to attend to.

>> that was barbara starr reporting. experts say relief groups are most concerned about sudan, somalia and kenya, which is already suffering its worst drought in years. they are also particularly worried that rising seas and changing weather patterns could displace millions of people in asia. do you ski? i do. and i didn't know what i thought of this video at first. a skier swept away by an avalanche. but a helmet cam films the entire experience. including his remarkable rescue.

in the south pacific, five large earthquakes hitting that region within 11 hours' time. all this happening right around vanuatu and the solomon islands.

but we can make sure that the banks' unreasonable practices do not continue to affect her american households. we must begin the process of accelerating the implementation date of credit cardholder bill of rights. when i got home that day from the signing ceremony at the white house, i had a notice in the mail, it said that my bank was increasing my rate, decreasing my available credit and increasing fees across the board. what changed? what changed between the day we passed the bill and the day i arrived home? >> reporter: here are some of the reforms aimed at helping you, depending on when you get them. that's still up in the air. first of all, limiting the interest rate increases on exiting balances. also, payments have to be amrid when they're toward your balance to the part of your balance with the highest interest rate first. that could be a huge money-saver. if you've got debt, you have one of those balances with different

interest rates. and no more universal defaults. if you default on one credit card, no longer will all your other credit cards will able to raise the rates on you. >> i know my am mex gets a litt bit of a workout every now and then. holiday shopping is coming up. sit too late to help us? >> reporter: holiday shopping season is what the experts are telling us, that's when you mox out the credit cards. when the spend ing ishighest. if you enact that reform december 1,you'll help a lot of folks there. also what we hear from expert, december and january are traditionally the biggest months for credit card applications. who knew? if you get those reforms enacted before then, you help on that front, too, brooke. it's going to be interesting to see, again, some backlash probably coming from the credit card companies on this one. we'll be watching. >> poppy, thank you. we're talking jon and kate and more. fighting over their twins'

tell me about the move he made in the middle of new york. >> yeah, this has got me baffled. quite frankly, i think there's a huge disconnect there. either jon is getting very bad advice from somebody or he simply does not get it. you mentioned the kids' birthday. it's the twins' birthday. and they have joint shared custody of these two beautiful girls. they can all spend birthdays together, according to the court. kate sent jon on e-mail. he received it on his blackberry explaining exactly how she wanted to see the birthday unfold. and jon saw fit to read that e-mail -- that private e-mail to tmz cameras. take a look at this. >> she says, due to recent events, it will be too stressful for the kids -- okay. to have both of us here as we had originally planned. i would like to split the evening so they can see us both. i would appreciate if you would pick them up at the bus stop

tomorrow at 4:00 and stay till 6:00. that's ridiculous. i'm going to stay longer than that. >> it's supposed to be a joint day because it's their birthday? >> yeah, all holidays, birthdays, whatever. >> i am having an enormously hard time understanding why jon gosselin thinks it is okay to be reading this private, personal e-mail about the custody of their kids to the cameras that the whole world is now getting a chance to see. it just blows my mind. >> it blows your mind. i don't think privacy is really in either of their vocabularies lately, it seems. this whole incident is happening at a bad time. when you think about a possible legal next step, what do you think? >> legally, i'm not sure. one thing i would like to see happen is a court-ordered mediator to step in to try to tell these guys exactly what to do and maybe even some kind of a gag order. quite frankly, jon needs to learn the words "no comment." i know the media hounds him all

saluting the bravery of those killed during the that insurgent attack. >> as we mourn the loss of these great americans, we remember their dedicated service and heroic actions as they fought alongside their comrades to preserve our freedoms. >> our soldiers over there, they're actually in very high spirits. they were attacked and the unit fought bravely. in the end, they won the day. >> the pentagon is also confirming that another soldier also from ft. carson now was killed in a separate afghanistan attack last weekend. he is the 24th soldier to die from that post in afghanistan. at least 13 people are dead, dozens are hospitalized in the capital of afghanistan. victims of a suicide car bombing just outside the indian embassy. the taliban issued a statement claiming responsibility for the blast. the afghan government is blaming elements from outside the

country. take a look at the aftermath there. a government spokesman says the bomber tried to drive an suv full of explosives through one of the embassy's gaits. this is the second bombing of that same embassy since july of last year. afghanistan's government blamed pakistani intelligence services for that attack. a dalton, illinois, police officer handed in his resignation following an altercation with a 15-year-old special education student. let's take a look at this video. this is an incident that happened in may. here's the fight. it appears to show this unidentified officer beating the student in the hallway. the teen's attorney says the cop slammed the boy against the locker and pinned him to the floor because he wasn't following the dress code. the teen broke his nose. the officer went to the hospital, too, with a scratch on his eye. the officer was removed from the school, stripped of his police powers, placed on administrative leave. as we mentioned, he has now quit. the investigation is ongoing.

the teen's parents are considering legal action. police in phoenix say a man who was kidnapped and held captive for a week might have escaped being buried alive. they say his alleged abductors demanded a ransom from his family. the ransom never came. and they told him they were thinking of burying him. he said he heard his captors digging and using a concrete cutting machine. he managed to get out through a bedroom window and ran to the neighbors for help. >> he was shaking. he was obviously scared. >> he was pretty freaked out. he had duct tape all over his arms. he was screaming. >> police surrounded the man and arrested two men and inside the home, they found a big hole, six-feet deep, bags of concrete as well. the story doesn't end there. they say the man who was

kidnapped is apparently involved in some kind of illegal activity himself. so they are investigating him as well. north carolina woman tell ago dramatic story about being kidnapped and beaten by a man she simply stopped to give a ride. her name is kimberly matthews. she thought she knew the guy. turned out he was a stranger. so she was robbed, beaten, forced to drive the truck until it ran out of gas. >> i had a necklace around my neck. he had it around my neck and about choked me to death. he was shaking me and he hits me against -- i don't know if it was against the steering wheel or hit my head -- anyway, my glasses went through my nose here. and i just blacked out. >> north carolina state troopers found her unconscious in her car. police are still looking for her attacker. a deadly typhoon has flooded homes and forced more than 11,000 people to evacuate. two people were killed and dozens are injured after a powerful typhoon slammed into japan. the storm destroyed bridges and

toppled large trucks along some of the highways. police say a man was killed as he was delivering newspapers when his motorbike hit a toppled tree. five large earthquakes hit the south pacific within 11 hours. all happening near vanuatu and the solomon islands. a tsunami warning was issued but that was called off. there are no reports of damages of any other injuries. you probably know about many of the health problems caused by extra weight. but now as elizabeth cohen reports for today's health minute, scientists say, it could affect your sleep. >> reporter: adding on the pounds could subtract from your sleep as well as your overall health. according to a new study in the american journal of respiratory and critical care medicine, overweight people are more likely to have a breathing-related sleep disorder. and those breathing problems can cause more severe consequences for the overweight. scientists analyzed 750 adults

ages 30 to 62 from an ongoing sleep study in wisconsin. the researchers say participants with higher body mass index were more likely to suffer oxygen starvation, which often leads to apnea. apnea can cause heart problems and keep people from getting enough sleep. obese people made up only 40% of the study but they experienced 62% of the group's breathing problems. the government says people with a body mass index of 30 or higher are obese. for the average 5'9" man, that's about 196 pounds. for the average 50 5'4" woman, it's about 165 pounds. you're at risk if you're 164 pounds for a 5'9" man or 145 pounds if you're a 5'4" woman. parent, this next story is for you. you love your kids, but sometimes taking care of them can be taxing. add that to your 9 to 5 job and

years ago. >> i do not drink. i do not smoke. i was diagnosed at the age of 39. there is no history of breast cancer in my family male or female. i was exposed while my mother was pregnant with me to chemicals in the drinking water. i was poisoned. >> representative john dingle has pushed for cleanup accountability for contaminated military sites including camp lejeune. >> frankly, it should not be permitted. it smacks of active deceit, dishonesty, irresponsibility of the environmental concerns and quite honestly putting their people at risk. >> reporter: the marine corps says drinking water at camp lejeune is now cleaned up but acknowledges it was badly contaminated. in a written statement the marines point out several

go into pakistan and get osama. you don't need 40,000 troops. ashley writes my husband is in the military and he is getting deployed. i don't think they should send more troops. they should hurry and end this. vicki writing for a country that has repelled arms for the past 1,000 years i don't understand why our military has to train their fighters. scott says as a vietnam veteran i feel that the military is more effective when the politics let the trained officials run our battles. health care reform has cleared a major hurdle. headed for a final vote in the senate finance committee next tuesday. here is something of a surprise. the nonpartisan congressional budget office says the plan being considered would cut the federal deficit by $80 billion in ten years. the amended legislation would cost $829 billion. the plan would extend coverage

to 94% of eligible americans. 25 million americans would remain uninsured when the plan is fully implemented in 2019. this will head to the full house and senate. in parents don't want their kids to get the h1n1 vaccine. many parents said they are unlikely to give permission to get their kids vaccinated. they are concerned about side effects. >> new undercover video shows how easy it is to buy guns illegally in the u.s. in most states private dealers can legally sell guns without doing background checks but if they have a reason to believe the buyer couldn't pass a background check they are not

someone because of gender, sexual preference or disability with a hate crime. the president supports the measure. an illinois police officer has handed in his resignation after an altercation involving a 15-year-old special ed student. here is the video. it appears to show the unidentified officer beating the student. the cop slammed the boy against the locker, pinned him against the floor. the teen broke his nose. the officer went to the hospital with a scratched eye. he was stripped of police powers and places on administrative leave. the investigation continues and the teen's parents are considering a lawsuit. a 1-year-old woman found dead in her nursing home was strangled. with wpri, our affiliate talked to the woman's son.

>> i'm just devastated. i can't imagine why anyone would hurt my mother. everyone loved her. >> reporter: scott barrow is in shock his 100-year-old mother elizabeth was murdered. he saw her the day before she was found dead at the nursing home. >> i took her out to lunch the day before it happened and took her shopping for some winter clothes. we had a wonderful time and it was just a shock to have her gone a few hours later. >> reporter: barrow was found in her bed by a nursing assistant during a routine check in late september. now have the results of an autopsy revealed she was strangled. to celebrate her 100 birthday exactly a month before her death her only son threw her a party. >> she was in great spirits. my daughter made my father's favorite recipes for her and we had a party on the deck and she was in great spirits.

>> well, he didn't know that rescue was close. he was buried about 4 1/2 minutes. somebody saw his glove, his right glove came off just before he was buried and that helped rescuers spot where he was. he's okay. new credit card rules aimed at protecting consumers take effect next february. some members of congress don't want to wait that long. poppy? >> they want to see this enacted sooner. the house democrats having a hearing on the legislation they introduced moving the effective date of credit card reform up from february 22nd to december 1st. now when this was all passed, the banks were given nine months to implement credit card reform.

some lawmakers say they are abusing that time, raising interest rates and fees. take a listen. >> we can't turn back the clock but we can make sure the banks unreasonable passions do not continue to effect more american house holds. today we must begin the process of accelerating the implementation of the credit card holder bill of rights. when i got home that day from the signing ceremony at the white house, i had a notice in the mail when i arrived home that friday, it said that my bank was increasing my rate, decreasing my available credit and increasing fees across the board. what changed? what changed between the day we passed the bill and the day i arrived home? >> reporter: you can see a lot of outrage there. here are some of the reforms aimed at helping you, depending on when you get them. that's still up in the air. first of all, limiting the interest rate increases on exiting balances.

also payments to make to pay off debt, toward the balance, those have to go to the balance with the highest interest rates first. that could be a huge money-saver. if you have one with different interest rates. if you did he fault on a payment with one of your credit cards, they can jack up the rates on all cards. with this, they won't be able to do that. >> will reform come? >> if we see this move forward to december 1st, before the holiday shopping season gets under way, that's when people spend the most on credit cards. if you enact it before that, it will help. december and january, those are the biggest months for credit card applications. that would be a good time to start prohibiting rate increases before that takes place. what you can expect from this, a pushback from the banking industry, credit card lobbies on

are at the center of a growing controversy in australia. what happened down under that has connick upset. the latest in news and views. i'm richelle carey as always for your time. president obama meets with two senior advisors on the war going forward in afghanistan, there's a report u.s. would be willing to septal ban as a role for the future of the country. a senior administration official is raising the possibility of the taliban government. they are part of the discussions but doesn't name the official. president is meeting with vice president biden, also secretary of state hillary clinton this afternoon to discuss that as his options. he's also viewing a report from the afghanistan commander that is general stanley mcchrystal that lays out possible stages of military escalation, adding anywhere from 10,000 to as many

as 40,000 troops. mcchrystal is said to be strongly recommending the highest number. and the eight soldiers killed during a firefight in afghanistan all came from ft. carson, colorado. at the post officers are saluting the bravery of those killed during the insurgent attack. >> as we mourn the loss of these great americans, we remember their dedicated service and heroic actions as they fought along with comrades to preserve freedoms. >> soldiers over there, actually very high spirits. they were attacked and the unit fought bravely. in the end they won the day. >> the pentagon confirms another soldier from ft. carson was killed in a separate afghanistan attack last weekend. he's the 24th soldier from the post to die in afghanistan. at least 17 people are dead and dozens of people are in the

admitting an extramarital affair in june. nearly all americans have some traces of the chemical bpa in their systems. some believe it's toxic. it's found in everything from toys to baby bottles. children suffering from exposure in the womb are suffering as toddlers. medical correspondent spoke about the issue earlier. >> reporter: they looked to pregnant women and tried to measure how much bpa they had in their systems while they were pregnant and got in touch with those women later. what they found, women with highest achlts bpa were more likely to have two-year-old daughters considered to be aggressive. not sons but daughters. there's lots of limitations to the study. lots of things they didn't measure that they should have. seshl it might give one more

positive look at bpa than ever before. >> the co-author of the study said there's already evidence to show pregnant women should reduce their exposure to bpa. are working moms happier than stay-at-home moms? a little bit, according a the pugh research center. stay-at-home moms are pretty happy, too. most of them said they would be happier if they could work part time and spend more time with their families. and dads, don't forget about them. dads seem to be pretty happy at work. 80% of working dads say they prefer working fulltime. stocks jumped out to a pretty strong start and then held their gains throughout the sessions. stephanie elam at the business desk where she hangs out, takes notes. >> i actually live here. >> seems like it.

because he wasn't following dress code. the teen broke his nose. the officer went to the hospital as well with the scratch to his eye. the officer was removed from the schools, stripped of police powers and placed on administrative leave. as we mentioned he has quit. the investigation is still ongoing. the teen's parents are considering a lawsuit. you've got to hear about a controversial report on children and violence. the justice department says more than 60% of u.s. kids were exposed to violence last year either directly or indirectly. one criminologist is slamming this report saying it's inaccurate because it includes kids who just heard about violence against someone or a possible threat to their home or school. new undercover video shows just how easy it is to buy a gun illegally in the u.s. new york city mayor michael bloomberg, this is what he did. he sent private investigators to seven gun shows in three states that were trying to expose

what's called the gun show loophole. in most cases gun dealers can sell legally without background checks. but if they have any reason to believe a buyer couldn't pass a background check, they are not supposed to sell to them. p.i.s put that to the tet. well, the investigation found 19 of 30 private sellers sold guns to people who said they couldn't pass a background check. bloomberg says criminals are getting those guns and bringing them back to new york city. are he's requiring a federal law to require background checks on all gun sales. >> closing the loophole and cracking down on those that violate the law has nothing to

do with the second amendment. it's about basic law enforcement plain and simple. the national rifle association says bloomberg should go after people breaking the law rather than hold news conferences. this the statement, part of it. says," bookberg's priorities are clearly media first, justice later." mayor bloomberg says he's not planning to file charges against any of the private dealers on the tapes. new information show most of the muslims don't live in the mideast. according to forum on religion and public life, two out of three muslims live in countries like indonesia, pakistan, india, mideast and north africa are home to 20% of the muslims. china has more than syria. there's more muslims in germany than lebanon. this could be important to focusing u.s. policy on outreach. a breaking news story coming to us from california.

it's very unusual. a man who is apparently running a child care center out of his home blew his hand off making homemade explosives. the riverside county sheriff's department said they found a marijuana growing facility in this man's home. he's 23 years old. his name is benjamin. no children found in the home at the time of the blast. they are helping with this investigation. they are trying to determine the type of explosives being mixed. police in phoenix say a man who was kidnapped and held captive for a week may have escaped actually being buried alive. they say his alleged abductors demanded a ransom of $100,000 from his family. it never kachlt the man told police he then heard his captors talking about burying him because they were sick of waiting for the money. he then heard digging and someone using a concrete cutting

machine. that's when he managed to get out a bedroom window and run to neighbors for help he was crying. freaked out. he had duct tape all over his arms. he was screaming in spanish to help him out, help him out. >> police surrounded the home and arrested two men. inside the home they found a six foot deep hole and bags of concrete. and the story actually doesn't end there. they say the man who was kidnapped was apparently involved in illegal activity themselves. now they are taking a look at him. a woman stopped because she thought she knew a guy and then turned out he was a stranger. she said she was robbed, beaten and forced to drive until her truck ran out of gas.
