good morning to you. it's a friday. i'm richard lui in for robin meade who is on assignment. we have a lot of stories today. just two hours ago, we got the stunning news that president barack obama has won the nobel peace prize. why the nobel committee says they chose him. plus, during this hour nasa will intentionally crash two spacecraft on the moon. why on earth are they doing this one? and a high school football player who lost his dad this summer had an extraordinary game. how he honored his father and broke a few records doing that. president barack obama has won the nobel peace prize.

the stunning announcement was made just two hours ago. the nominee committee said he was chosen for his outreach efforts, specifically his work on climate change and nuclear disarmement. >> only very rarely has a person to the same extent as obama captured the world's attention and given his people hope for a better future. his diplomacy is bonded in the concept of those who are to rule the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population. >> okay. president obama will now get $1.4 million along with the peace prize itself. he's now the third sitting u.s. president to win it after teddy roosevelt and woodrow wilson. two nasa spacecraft are just about to crash into the moon. it's going to happen on purpose

in about 30 minutes. the first one does the dirty work. ilts supposed to kick up a big cloud of dust after landing. it's about the size of a large bus. and then a small sensor will fly in to analyze the dust particles before it crashes as well. nasa is hoping to find some water in that soil. >> it's really about human sustainability, so if we have water, obviously we can break that down. obviously we have water for consumption, for human consumption, and we also break that down into hydrogen which can also be used as a fuel source or rocket fuel when we get there. also it can be broken down into oxygen for breathing. it provides sustainability on the moon if and when we do return. >> what's cool about this is you can watch this along with us. we'll show this live. nasa is predicting the dust cloud will be so big you'd be able to see it through a

mid-size backyard telescope. who is going to clean this up? we got a lot of debris sitting up there, right? two tons of debris, that's a lot. >> why are we shooting the moon? >> if you want bona fide water, here it is. dallas all the way through san antonio and stretching all the way to the east right now. 2.5 inches have fallen in dallas into oklahoma. 2 to 4 inches of rain here just today and the whole thing is sliding to the east. i'm show you exactly where it's headed in just a couple minutes, richard. >> thank you, bob. appreciate that. scientists are taking a rare public stand against animal activists. scientists say they've had their homes and cars firebombed and flooded. the fbi considers the attacks to be domestic terrorism, but a

spokesman says it's the researchers who are the terrorists here. so the house is expanding its ethics investigation of congressman charlie rangel. rangel has already admitted serious mistakes on financial disclosure and tax forms. now investigators say they need to find out if he has more unreported assets. republicans have tried to remove rangel as chairman of the house, ways and means committee. last night dana bash explains why democrats will not go along with this. >> i've talked to some democratic congressmen in the past 24 to 48 hours, and they say the reason they're willing to wait until the ethics committee finishes its work is actually personal to them, because they say today is charlie rangel, tomorrow it could be them which they may think from their perspective is wrong. >> he runs the irs on the tax code and admits he didn't pay as

well more than $250,000 in assets. but he denies in a report that he helped effect a tax break to a company whose boss. it's the deadliest suicide attack ever in peshawar, pakistan. the hospital quickly filled up with 100 people hurt in the blast. it was so crowded, some patients even had to share gurneys. the senate finance committee will vote tuesday on the health care reform package, and right now it looks like it might be the closest bill yet to try to reach the president's goelsz. it provides coverage for 94% of the eligible population and would reduce the deficit, but it still may draw opposition from republicans. doctors got suspicious when a man walked into a hospital claiming he had accidentally shot his hand. now, his wounds did not match his story, so when police went

to his house, they couldn't believe what they found. >> we were able to find that there was a bomb manufacturing, some type, within the home. as we're looking further, we come to find out also that there is an active sophisticated marijuana grow, and to top that, the unfortunate part is that it is a licensed daycare center. >> police also arrested the man's mother and brother. charges against them include child endangerment. it might be a little chilly for some, might get some rain. it's friday, we want to get away, and bob van dillen is going to tell us what we should or shouldn't do. should we stay in, bob? >> it depends on where you're living. if you like cold temperatures, denver right now, 28 degrees. they had some de-icing in denver. more on that in a second. i want to show you the rain we had just yesterday storm totalwise. centralia, oklahoma, five inches of rain. the rain continues on the east side of that state. even jefferson city, missouri,

4.5 inches of rain, and that rain which i will heading out to dallas this morning. a lot of lightning and heavy rain wrapped up in that. picking up the lightning showers right around i-20. it's not moving as fast as it was an hour ago, but it's going to continue to chug into places like shreveport. in memphis, thundershowers just up to the north. no warnings on any of these when it comes to severe thunderstorm or tornado, but the flash flood warnings are out there and the watches go all the way through ohio. getting into louisiana, ready to spread towards western pittsburgh on the heavy side and get into western new york and getting into new england, too. scranton, binghamton, syracuse. you're not going to get the rain until overnight tonight around the d.c. metro area. let me take you live to

waiting for the latest on this because whether they can pay the bills depends on this. it would be an extra 14 weeks of benefits for everyone who is on unemployment assistance. and if you live in one of the states in red here on this map, you would get six weeks a top of that, so 21 weeks extension in all. this goes well beyond an earlier proposal in the house. maybe senate democrats are just playing santa because they want to break this out of committee for a vote, put it into action sochlt it may be longer before it becomes law, but this is a really bold move in action here. but don't call the unemployment office yet, they don't know anything, it's not law. it's not even due for a senate vote until next week. any time there is a development, we'll let you know, and here's one. it was locked up in the senate and it looks like thai come up with this generous proposal to put it into action. the 30-year fixed rate

mortgage, it's now just between 4-3/4 and 5%. rates have fallen. there is fear it might damage the economy, but the feds have been so active buying billions in securities and some other markets that will affect rates, but they won't last forever. warned fed chief ben bernanke last night, they will slow down and be rewarded someday when it's strong enough to stand by itself. >> that graphic says it all, 4.8 versus 4.9%, that could be hundreds of dollars per month for some people. >> it could make a difference, and it also could mean you might get the house you want but in a way where it's really responsible and you can handle the mortgage. >> thank you, jen. a high school football star honored his late father the best way he could. he set new records and not just any record. it's a great story. rafer's got it.

got some breaking news if you're just joining us this morning. president obama is the surprise winner of the 2009 nobel peace prize which was announced just about two hours ago. and the $1.4 million award that comes with it as well. the nobel committee praised his creation of a new climate and international politics. it was clear that the committee wanted to encourage him to continue that work.

cnn has learned how the news played out in the white house. secretary robert gibbs called the president a little before 6:00 a.m. eastern. that's about an hour after the announcement happened. he woke the president up, he told him he won, and he said the president was humbled to be selected by the nobel committee. we're expecting a statement from the white house later this morning. of course we'll have it right here for you. a young man paid tribute to his late father by matching his dad's impressive record on the football field. rafer weigel. who we talking about here? >> we're talking about a very impressive young man from johnstown, pennsylvania. it was such an emotional day for him. his name is josh seidel. he tied rushing yards in a game with six in their win over ridgeland. here's the thing, that record was set by his late father, dave, who died in 1981 after a long battle with brain cancer.

unfortunately, dave couldn't see it but josh credits his teammates and feels like he had a little help from above. it's u.s. against the world in the pga president's cup, so there's president george w. bush in a coin toss with michael jordan and an as not -- not smoking his cigar. tiger didn't need any assistance. they were dominant. the u.s. leads in a four-day tournament. dara tore res, remember her? her knee needs radical surgery to repair it and she'll need 12 to 18 months to recover, but she's still not giving up on the games in london. i wouldn't put it past her if she could do it. after the steelers won the super bowl and the penguins won their third stanley cup, so the

those are some of the headlines we're following for you on this friday. robin is on assignment today. an unmanned rocket is about to plow into the moon, creating a huge dust cloud. these are live pictures of where we believe the impact site will be. in just a few minutes, a satellite will fly into the cloud to analyze some samples before it, too, crashes into the moon. we're about 30 seconds away. we're listening to obviously what is being said at the moment. scientists hope to find traces of water. the size of this rocket that will be going in is quite large, and of course we'll be watching with that. are we going to stay with this and follow through? it's about a two-ton sized rocket that will be hitting the surface right behind us here, and there will be a small center, another satellite right behind it that will be analyzing what comes up from the earth. okay, let's watch right now and see what happens. >> all stations slight. mark centaur impact.

minute to transition to dv mode. >> dv mode is actually a control mode for the spacecraft. it allows us to slew much more quickly to continue to point at the center point, even though the shuttle spacecraft will be impacting a couple kilometers away. this is the last minute before the shepherding spacecraft also impact the surface of the moon. and a last-minute flight. we're watching ret maining few seconds of the out-cross mission as we approach very rapidly the surface. >> it's supposed to happen at 7:31 eastern time. that's an impact of an over two-ton satellite in a rocket first, then providing a plume.

it's going white at the moment. we're looking at live video again. we'll keep it in a small box for you, and when something does happen, we'll get right back to it as soon as that happens and we'll give you the details in terms of how much water they can find on the surface of the moon. they're sending dozens more police officers to schools to try to stop youth violence because of the recent beating death of a student. these teens are ringing a bell and reading the names of kids killed last year. >> since we're the ones that are doing the killings, and since we're the ones that are getting killed, the youth needs to step up. we need to bring about a change. >> four teenagers have been charged with murder in the deadly beating of derrion albert last month. now to david letterman's admit answers of his dalliances

southwest and it stretches to the northeast. getting into louisville as well, stretching on back in towards ohio, and that heavy belt of rain is going to make its way into new york. it already has into new york state. getting into new york city and philadelphia tonight. showers ini altoona and johnstown. areas flooded around atlanta two weeks ago could see as much as one to two inches of rain, too. i want to show you the sunrise coming up in the d.c. area. you won't see rain today, it's going to be tonight. but what a beautiful sunrise, and the temperatures in the 80s. more in just a minute. >> muggy, too? >> no doubt. it's going to be humid. president obama beat out more than 200 nominees to win the nobel peace prize this morning, and he also joins two

much none. i think in some ways it's how the condition of being human has a big impact on business. this is a measurement of people, whether or not they were satisfied with their phones. usually pretty standard, people like this, people don't like that, does the phone give them some trouble. what they found this time around was if you didn't have a smart phone, like an iphone or plaq blackberry, you were likely to look at your neighbors and then taking it out on your cell phone, saying you were dissatisfied with your old phone just bausz it didn't do the fancy things. so people who had the smart phones said they were more satisfied. i foechb tied with apple for satisfaction. is it working? first, there is a congressional oversight panel. they've got a report coming out

today that's going to criticize the plan, not saying we should get rid of it, but saying it should do more. the report is going to say the program in many cases only delays the icnevitable. it's also not dealing with all the people who are losing their jobs and they can't make their mortgage payments right now, which is a very serious problem in the foreclosure effort. maybe somebody in your family is experiencing this right now. so that's the negative spin. the white house spin is they just reached a milestone, that half a million people have been helped by the program and they're on track to help 4 million people in three years. in every community, there are women who motivate, innovate and inspire. our robin meade as a story about mickey and that's in our series, "breakthrough women." >> their joy, their love, their accomplishments. >> you did great.

back to our top story. president obama has won the noble peace prize, a stunning announcement made just three hours ago. the nominating committee said mr. obama was chosen for his international diplomacy efforts, specifically mentioning his outregion to the muslim world and his work on climate change and nuclear disarmament. dan lothian from our sister network cnn explained how president obama heard the news. >> reporter: it was robert gibbs, the white house spokesman, who called the president this morning shortly before 6:00 a.m. and broke the news to him that he had won the noble peace prize. according to the senior administration official, the president was "humbled to be selected by the committee." clearly the white house was caught off guard. another administration official saying "we were quite surprised by the announcement". >> what a surprise he woke up to no doubt. president obama will get $1.4 million along with the peace prize. he's now the third sitting u.s. president to ever win it after teddy roosevelt and woodrow

wilson decades earlier. within the past half hour, two nasa spacecraft crashed into the moon on purpose into this area. the first one did the dirty work, kicked up a cloud of dust, metric tons of dust. then a few minutes later, the second satellite flew in through that to analyze the dust particles before it then crashed as well. now, nasa is hoping to find water in that soil and how much is the key question here. that would open up some amazing possibilities in the future if they knew it. >> one of the great things about eventually human exploration of the moon or anywhere is the idea we might be able to live off the land, use what it offers instead of bringing it with us. it's like the ultimate family vacation. if you have to bring everything, you might as well stay home. >> nasa had promised live pictures of the impact but that did not happen. nasa is looking to see what happened to those pictures. we'll let you know as soon as we find out. new this morning, at least 49 people were killed when a car

bomb exploded in a bustling market. this is the aftermath. a government other official says it's the deadliest suicide ever. the nearby hospital filled up with people hurt in the blast. it was so crowded some patients had to even share gurneys. a lifeline could be coming soon for millions of unemployed folks across united states. democrats have said they've broken a stalemate in extending jobless benefits. jen is here with that. that could be very good news for some. >> there are millions of families depending on those unemployment checks just to get them through, feed nir their families. this is a very generous proposal from democrat senators. an extra 14 weeks of benefits for everyone across the country. and if you live in a state with red, six weeks on top of that. that's a 20-week extension there. the states in red by the way have a higher unemployment rate. more than 8.5%. so this senate proposal goes

well beyond an earlier proposal that we had from the house. we'll see if that's what really comes to pass. the senate democrats may be playing santa to just get this out of committee and out to the floor for a vote. that could happen next week. remember, no need to call the unemployment office just yet. this is not law, not due for the senate vote until next week. we'll keep you updated on the twists and turns. >> hold on before you make the call. thanks. the house is expanding its ethics investigation of convict gregsman charlie wrangle. he's admitted several mistakes on tax forms. investigators say they need to find out if he has more unreported assets. republicans have tried to remove rangel as chairman of the house ways and means committee chshgs is in charge of the irs and the tax code. last night on our sister network cnn a conservative political watchdog talked about the issues here. >> he has four rent-controlled apartments in new york city for which he doesn't qualify, two issues connected to the

so-called charles b. rangel school for public service at the city college of new york. number one, he solicited gifts for that institution on congressional letter hed, which is against the rules, he also protected a lucrative tax break for a company called neighborses industries while the ceo of that company, eugenizenburg, was pledging a million dollars to the school. >> rangel has denied a report that made that last allegation you heard there. rangel says he is the victim of a smaer campaign going on. let's move to police in ft. lauderdale, florida, looking at possible criminal charges against a former nurse. they think she may have exposed more than 1800 patients to hiv and hepatitis. hospital officials say the nurse reused i.v. tubing and other supplies. the hospital says the risk is low but it is asking all the patients involved to get tested. that nurse has resigned. let's get over to bob van dillen. i can't say it's friday enough because we like it when it's friday. two days in front of us if the

weather is good. >> it's not going to be. this weather pattern don't care for it. heavy rain around areas that don't need it, north texas through arkansas. the rest of the midwest through the great lakes and the northeast. rain showers heavy at times will spread toward alabama, georgia into carolinas for overnight tonight through the weekend. here's what it looks like a slow moving cold front. you can see the steady train of rain from texas through oklahoma to arkansas where it's raining the heaviest right now and rain getting in toward st. louis, too. dallas you can see what it looks like, the flash flood watches and warnings in the light green. the flood warnings are light green, the flash flooding where you have the water rising quickly is in the red shaded areas. two to four inches of rain today on top of what you've already seen, some areas have seen three to five inches since yesterday. heaviest rain is getting out of dallas going down i-20 toward shreveport. you can see the dallas radar just aglow with activity. the greens and yellows is heavy steady rain, everything moving

to the east at a slow pace. that's why you'll see the rain begin to mount and pile up to over two inches. more rain getting in toward memphis, right on the outskirts of town with the thunderstorms. then toward louisville, big flashes of lightning on the eastern side of that state. more showers, thunderstorms working through the ohio valley. they're really going to pick up in intensity later this afternoon as will the rain shield as it stretches to the north. notice where the rain is headed, through scranton and philadelphia, ultimately through new york and boston tonight. new york showers later this morning and more for the afternoon. here's what it looks like in nyc. trying to travel? clouds already in place. no delays at the major airports yet but that will probably change as the rain comes in. watch for a half hour to hour-long delay around nyc. those storms around st. louis yesterday, two to five inches of rain by eastern missouri, flash flooding. that's what it looks like, more in a bit. more tower cams coming up, too.

stabilized. hundreds of lawsuits are piling up over alleged toxic drywall and a consolidated class-action lawsuit is moving forward in louisiana according to this morning's "new york times." we've talked about this story here, though. you've heard it, that drywall from china has been recalled. a lot of people have a lot of complaints about it. but this is not like toothpaste or toys where you can just take it back to the store. it's got to be ripped out. it can cause extensive damage am in the home. one lawyer says up to 100,000 homes may have to be torn down, and what a lot of people complaining, allegations are that it corrodes wires, some people say it's made them sick, that it stinks so much you can't even go into their home anymore. back to you. we'll see what happens with that. >> a very big concern obviously. as you said, it takes a lot of money and time to replace that drywall once it's installed. >> they used it a lot in housing places like louisiana. police say they went to a licensed day care center and

found explosives and a load of marijuana. how doctors tipped them off with that one. tiger woods has won just about every golf award there is, but find out why a gold medal may now be in his sights.

this a story we're following all morning. president barack obama making history again. he was awarded the noble peace prize. the nominating committee said he showed "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation." the white house said the president was humbled by this honor. we're expecteding to hear from him in two hours, live here on hln. doctors got suspicious when a man walked into a hospital claiming he had accidentally shot his hand. the wounds didn't match his story. when police went to his house they couldn't believe what they found. >> we were able to find that there was a bomb manufacturing of some type within the home. as we're looking further, we come to find out also that there is an active, sophisticated marijuana growth. and to top that, the unfortunate part is that it is a licensed day care center. >> day care center. police also arrested the man's

mother and brother. charges against them include child endangerment. we told you about levi johnston, the father of sarah palin's grandson and the revealing spread his attorney says is in the works for "playgirl" magazine. that upcoming appearance got joy behar's attention and she has a lot to say about it. >> just when you thought the sarah palin soap opera might be riding off into the tundra, up pops levi johnston. and i mean pops up. levi, bristol palin's baby daddy, is going to unzip his levis and show us his johnston in "playgirl" online magazine. i hope he's not built like a moose. sarah is likely to shoot him from a helicopter. i don't know if this will hurt sarah's career, but i'm sure it will help levi meet some fabulous men. allow me to enlighten. levi, how do you feel about liza minelli or na donna? you see, most subscribers are

without the pins. that's got to hurt. but that's just me. so we've got breaking news in the sports world this morning. just coming out. it looks like the 2016 summer olympics will have a few more sports added to that. rafer weigel, this just came in this morning? >> about an hour ago, maybe less. it looks like tiger woods can get an olympic gold medal, go for the gold. the associated press says the international olympic committee has approved golf for the 2016 games. that is in rio. tiger along with several other pros put together a video presentation pleading with the ioc to include this sport. he says he would play if they included it. it looks like he will. you remember the ioc allows professionals to participate in the olympics. also approved, rugby sevens. speaking of tiger and golf, he and the rest of the world teed off in the president's cup.

there's the president george h.w. bush with the team's captains and michael jordan an assistant to team usa. as far as tiger, he needed no aaist sns. he and steve stricker were pretty much dominant off the bat. the u.s. leads after day one of the tournament. u.s. swimmer der ra torres overcame incredible odds to win three silvers in beijing. torres' arthritic knee will need radical surgery to repair it, 12 to 18 months to recover. but she is not giving up on the 2012 games. i wouldn't put it past her. cole hamels got a call of the lifetime. he took the mound for game two of their series with colorado with his wife expect gt their first child. hamels didn't have a great game. he was pulled in the fifth inning. that's when he got the word. your wife, she is in labor. he's off. philly would lose the game. one he'll always remember. that's a look at sports.

looking good. 58 years old. what's going on, richard? show you what's going on for the weather. a lot of action especially across the lower half of the country when it comes to heavy rain from arkansas down through texas. that's where the rain is falling at the heaviest point. but you get up toward the north, it begins to fan out a little bit. it's not quite as heavy but still out there. all the away across the midwest into the northeast right now, right around st. louis still with heavier rain. let me show you what it looked like just yesterday. the rain was out there. it just came down in in sheets. two to five inches of rain is what was reported across eastern missouri. this is wait it looked in st. louis. flash flood warnings, we had them posted up there for that city. you can see why, knee deep in floodwaters because of about four inches of rain in that particular spot. what's going on now? where are those warnings and watches? the warnings are the light shaded green, flash flood warnings in red. three to five inches of rain on top of what you've already seen so that's what we're calling for, two to four over the next couple of hours is what you'll

get with that major squall line. here's dallas, cold front off to the west. it's a slow moving cold front, had which means it will rain over one spot for a longer period of time, why we have so much rain coming down at the rate it is. dallas, radar picture, most of the rain sliding to the east on i-20 toward shreveport, showers into memphis, ground stop at the memphis airport because of the thundershowers. to the north faurnlg, here is the louisville radar, breaking out a bit with the scattered showers, becoming a little more widely scattered in nature. it will fill back on in. look at the big picture. here comes that shield of rain right out of the ohio valley into western pennsylvania, new york state getting covered up from the finger lakes and buffalo back toward syracuse and stretching into the northeast. philadelphia, light showers out there, same for new york this afternoon. temperatures are going to heat up for you specifically down across the south. maybe getting up into the 80s when you get in toward atlanta. let me show you ha it looks like. it will be a tough one. 85 to 87 in atlanta, low clouds

neighbor's phone and then when you look back at your own, you've got some resentment. people who don't have smartphoneses, less satisfied with what they've got than in years past. while most people with them are more satisfied. according to the new j.d. power survey, the apple iphone tops for satisfaction. that was both consumers and business users. lg and blackberry tied for second by consumers. is the white house plan to help at-risk homeowner working? a lot of talk about this. we've got two sides today. first, a congressional oversight panel have a report due out today. and the gist of it is that it's going to say, no, this plan is not doing enough to help people. it's saying that basically it only delays the inevitable and that it was never structured to deal with the huge influx of foreclosures we've got now because of the rising jobless rate. when people lose their jobs, they can't pay their mortgages and that's something that's come on top of the subprime mortgage crisis. however, the treasury department

there she is. little brianna. how a phone call she made saved had her mother's life. now to the top story on this friday morning. president obama won the nobel peace prize. the stunning announcement was made two hours ago. the nominating committee said mr. obama was chosen for his international diplomacy efforts. they specifically mention his outreach to the muslim world and his work on climate change and nuclear disarmament. >> only very rarely has a person to the same extent as obama captured the world's attention and give its people hope for a better future. his diplomacy is founded in the concept of those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population. >> that announcement was made about four hours ago. and then three hours ago is when the press secretary woke up

president obama and said, hey, you won. we're expecting mr. obama to make a statement at the white house in about 90 minutes. we'll carry that live for you right here. and then 90 minutes ago, two nasa spacecraft crashed into the moon on purpose. the first one kicked up a cloud of dust. metric tons in size. a few minutes later a second satellite flew into analyze the dust particles that came up from the first one and it crashed as well. it was a $79 million mission. it could open up amazing possibilities in the future. >> one of the great things about eventual human exploration of the moon is that we may be able to live off the land rather than bringing it with us. it's like the ultimate family vacation. if you have to bring everything, you might as well stay home. >> we expect an update on what nasa found in an hour. it was a big event for amateur

astronomers. there was an all-night party for those who wanted to be there for the crashes. >> who is not interested to see something crash into the moon? all of the people here and it's going to be fun. >> the dust cloud was supposed to be big enough so you could see it through a mid sized backyard telescope. an update on what they may have found in one hour right here on hln. stick around for that. this area described as just one big river. more than 400 people died in the past two weeks here in the philippines from landslides and flooding. dozens more landslides this morning and 32 towns are flooded right now. two u.s. navy ships standing by with helicopters and rubber boats to help with rescues there. hard hit in recent weeks. be sure to bring an umbrella and rain boots if you live in the midwest today. meteorologist bob van dillen is here with more on that. we've been seeing pictures of people trudging through water up to their knees. >> that was outside of st.

louis. i want to give you a quick heads-up on what's going on today through the weekend. it's a slow moving cold front that really generates right around the great lakes. look how far down it goes. in towards texas. it's a slow mover acting like a conveyer belt to draw rain out of the gulf of mexico and throw it toward texas, louisiana, arkansas, with heaviest rain stretching toward missouri and illinois. i'll show you where flash flood warnings are in just a couple minutes. the senate finance committee will vote tuesday on the long awaited health care reform package and right now it looks like it may be the closest bill yet to try to reach the president's goals. congressional budget office says it provides coverage for 94% of those who are eligible and would reduce the deficit. but there is still major opposition from republicans. to doctors who got suspicious when man walked into a hospital claiming he had accidentally shot his hand. his wounds did not match his story. police went to his house and they could not believe what they found. >> we were able to find that

much as 5 to 6. 2 to 4 inches of rain today through the mid mississippi valley stretching toward tennessee and rest of kentucky. heavy rain moving out of dallas. we can see texarkana line moving in toward arkansas down in toward louisiana. a couple severe thunderstorm warnings around texarkana now. 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts is what you get out of that. the rain shield continues to improve as it moves on in toward memphis. memphis in a ground stop right now at the airport because of the rain. lasts until 9:30 eastern. most likely gets extended. look at the rain breaking up when it gets toward mountains and around kentucky, ohio getting light rain showers. but notice the big shield. it's all moving over toward the northeast and it will continue to press this way over the next couple of hours. let me show you what it looks like in d.c. i think you'll be clear of the rain for the day. high today 84 to 85. look at that sunshine right there. feels like summertime. rain and some thunderstorms develop probably after sunset tonight and then rain through tomorrow afternoon for d.c. and the beltway. more on that coming up in just a

breaking news. president obama is the surprise winner of the 2009 nobel peace prize and the $1.4 million award that comes with it. the nobel prize committee praised his accomplishments for peace. we'll move over to actress elizabeth taylor who has a message to fans and friends. new for you in 20 minutes, what she's saying about her heart surgery. police in texas are honoring a 5-year-old girl for saving her mom's life. about a month ago, brianna sanchez's mom cut an artery in her hand on a broken window. she was bleeding so badly she asked her daughter to call 911.

>> she told me to get out the phone from her pocket and call 911. >> little brianna got three awards including one given to police officers when they save someone's life. her mom is doing just fine thanks to what she did. >> i love that story, jen westhoven. a lifeline could be coming soon for unemployed folks across the united states. millions it could be. they have broke an stalemate on extending jobless benefits in the senate with democrats, right? >> there are a lot of people who know exactly when their benefits will run out. they're really worried about what they'll do after that with the job market still in tough shape. democratic senators making a very generous proposal. 14 weeks more of benefits for everyone who's on unemployment assistance plus that's for everyone and if you live in a state in red on this map, which means the unemployment rate is even higher there, higher than

8.5%, then you get six weeks on top of that. that's a 20-week extension. this all goes well beyond an earlier proposal that we had heard from the house of representatives. maybe the senate democrats are trying to play santa to get this into action. it could be more modest when it comes into law again. mortgage rates are down. 30-year fixed rate mortgage, it's well below 5% now. it's halfway between 4.75 and 4%. last year it was nearly 6%. the fed chief says don't count on these rates to be around forever. we know that rates are down because of worries about inflation and how it might damage the economy. but also because the fed has been so active. the fed chief ben bernanke said they could take away the punch bowl meaning raise interest rates at some point but not until the economy has improved sufficiently and looks like it can stand on its own.

presentation asking the olympic committee to include it and tiger said he would play. professionals are allowed to compete in the olympic games and tiger and golf, he and team u.s. taking on the rest of the world. there's a former president. george h.w. bush and there's michael jordan. tiger needed no assistance at all. he and steve stricker dominated early. u.s. leads after day one of the four-day tournament. this is a big deal they only do every couple years. lastly, this young man is a big deal. he's our true champion. he's from johnstown, pennsylvania. tied a school record for rushing touchdowns in a game with six. and the win. the record was set by his late father back in 1981 but dave couldn't see it because he died after a long battle with brain cancer in august. josh credited his teammate and said he felt like he had help from above. that's a look at sports.

>> we're the ones doing the killings and we're the ones getting killed, the youth needs to step up. we need to bring about a change. >> four teenagers have been charged with murder in the deadly beating of derrion albert last month. at least 49 people were killed when a car bomb exploded in a bustling market. a government officials says it's the deadliest attack. it got so crowded -- listen to this, some patients even had to share gurneys. major league pitcher got the call of a lifetime. here's rafer weigel to explain what was on the other side of that phone call. >> you know, you heard the stories about pitcher getting the call. you heard that term. phillies ace cole hamles his wife expecting their first child. he didn't really have great game. how could he? his manager said later his wife

was probably on his mind. gets pulled and gets word that his wife is in labor. it's one he'll remember for the rest of his life. the fans cheered him on in celebration. happy for him. >> looking forward to that. thank you. let's sweep on over to bob van dillen who is watching the with weather and how are we doing today, my friend? >> i tell you what? we're looking at heavy downpours just stretching out from texas going all of the way up in towards the mid mississippi valley and then fanning out across the great lakes with a brand new tornado watch. look at this. just right now issued. you can see right across lower parts of arkansas, northern sections of louisiana and parts of mississippi. brand new tornado watch for the next 5 to 6 hours as that one squall line continues to race on over in this direction. you can see the rain is headed due north when it gets in toward missouri out of arkansas, too. it's fanning back on in toward basically lower parts of chicago and st. louis.

let me give you a live look at st. louis right now. this is the way it goes. it will continue to rain. 3 to 5 inches of rain already around the city itself. the rain continues through the morning into the early afternoon. drier air begins to sweep in this afternoon. you can see the arch there just rainy conditions. gray skies. anticipate major delays right there. something we're watching. flash flood warnings around the area back to the maps you can see just outside of st. louis 2 to 4 inches of rain today. lower parts of missouri back in toward arkansas stretching in toward western kentucky, western tennessee. that's where heaviest rain will be found. we had that brand new tornado watch and that's because of the squall line moving out of texarkana. you can see it includes pine bluff toward greenville down to lower parts of louisiana. that's what it looks like right there with radar. any tornado warnings pop up, i'll have them for you. more in just a bit. >> cold weather, too. >> that's on the back side of that. fra freeze warnings for the midwest tomorrow morning. >> plenty to talk about. thanks, bob.

wall street coming off two losing weeks but this one could end with a win. for a look at today's early action, let's go to susan lisovicz at the new york stock exchange. a rally there yesterday. >> everyone was smiling. the dow ending up 200 points and change from 10,000. it's been a real struggle to get past that but over the next couple of weeks we could do it because we have lots of corporate earnings and if they are favorable, the bulls may run. what we're seeing right now in the first six minutes of trading, stocks headed lower but we expect stocks to notch a big gain for the week. dow going into today's session up 300 points on the back of some upbeat economic news. retail sales are improving. early corporate earnings are upbeat. because of these positive signs, fed chief ben bernanke said last night that central bank could tighten monetary policy as the recovery takes hold but that's not likely to happen for a while. policy makers pumped more than

$2 trillion into the economy and kept interest rates at historic lows. the latest lady to shed her clothes for "playboy" magazine is none other than marge simpson. marge will be featured in a three-page complete with data sheet. her photo shoot will be revealed in the november issue which comes in celebration of the cartoon's 20th anniversary. i have seen what appears to be a preview of said picture and in this picture, richard, the "playboy" -- it's what we don't see -- the "playboy" bunny ears strategically placed. we see marge and the fabulous blue air do but little else. >> we'll have to buy it for the article. >> yes. we read those articles. >> and cross fingers for today's stock exchange of course as

"usa today" reporting there may be enough h1n1 vaccines for everyone eventually, many people won't get it fast enough. u.s. health officials say outdating manufacturing and testing technology has slowed down vaccine production. flipping through the pages of the "l.a. times." the house passing a bill making violence against gays a hate crime. it's attached to a testifies bill and the senate is expected to pass it. the white house said president obama looks forward to signing it into law. then we go to "the new york times." a plan claims he has rare home video of babe ruth in action. you can see a snapshot right there. if you can look closely enough showing what appears to be the babe playing in the outfield. all right. those are papers today.

an autopsy is planned today in the death of a soccer mom who made headlines last year. melan melanie and her husband were found shot death inside their home. three children were not hurt in this. neighbors were saying one of them ran outside saying daddy shot mommy. melanie shocked other parents when she openly carried a loaded pistol to her daughter's soccer game last september. david letterman's admitted affairs with female staffers raised questions about sexual harassment in the workplace. >> if it isn't it remains in the private realm and i feel strongly that whether you're a comedian or a politician if it is a private matter, it's between you and your wife. if the law is involved because of sexual harassment or prostitution or anything else, that's another story. we have no evidence yet.
