>> reporter: this is undercover video from sharonville, ohio, part of a nationwide investigation to expose what's wrong with what's known as the gun show loophole. unlike licensed dealers, the so-called gun show loophole allows unlicensed private sellers to sell guns without doing background checks on buyers. they're viewed as collectors who are occasional sellers so they fly under the radar. but, this is key -- while they're exempt from background checks, it is illegal for private sellers to sell guns to anyone they know or have reason to believe would not pass a background check, which is exactly what some are caught doing on this video. why should you care? the bureau of alcohol and tobacco and fire arms says one in every three guns used in illegal gun trafficking is

connected to a gun show. >> this is real -- this translates to people getting killed. children, adults, police officers, civilians. >> michael bloomberg called for the investigation to get congress to act on two bills he says congress is sitting on, that would force a background check on every single gun show purchase. the national rifle association has told us, they've always supported strict enforcement of existing laws, though it would not comment when asked if the so-called gun show loophole should be closed. bloomberg says nine states and the district of columbia require that now. this is a gun show in reno, nevada. more than 40 undercover agents working for the mayor's office visited gun shows in other states. >> no background check. no tax, no charges, $500, it's yours. off you go. >> i couldn't pass one.

the neck. police arrested a fellow student, but are not clear on a motive. he's described as the victim's chemistry lab partner. people in the lab were stunned when the 20-year-old woman was stabbed and rushed to stop the bleeding. the suspect is in jail on $1 million bail. he has an arraignment on tuesday. the fda wants hospitals nationwide to review their safety procedures for ct scans. this comes after more than 200 patients in california were exposed to high levels of radiation. a hospital in l.a. says they got eight times more radiation than they should have during their ct brain scans. state inspectors are investigating, but officials already know one machine's radiation setting was too high for a year and a half. so we're not even two weeks into october, but this ski resort is already inviting people to hit the slopes. the california resort opened yesterday earlier than ever in its history. summer officially ended just 19 days ago.

but the resort opened this early partly because it worked so hard to make the artificial snow. some firefighters got themselves in a dicey situation when they tried to educate the public. and just look at this. and to make matters worse, one of them didn't seem to notice he was burning.

to do a sprinkler demonstration. look at this. two firefighters' suits caught fire after melted plastic dripped on them. but the firefighter in the middle didn't realize he was burning he was burning. one firefighter was hospitalized with burns on his hand and cheek. a two-month investigation ended with police making a bust of almost 930 gallons of moon shine. they discovered the large quantity of illegal liquor under a man's shed in the mountains of north carolina. the 63-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with possession of non-tax paid liquor for the purpose of selling.

a u.n. spokesman said 11 people died when a plane crashed into a mountainside yesterday. that carried u.n. people who worked on a mission. and a good week on wall street. the dow jones jumped 78 points yesterday and closed below the high for the year. some economic reports this week were better than expected. that's a quick check of your saturday headlines, welcome back to hln, i'm holly firfer. an undercover operation has revealed how easy it is to buy a gun at a gun show. it's a loophole in the law that sidesteps background checks. randi kaye looks at how it works and who's riled up about it. >> reporter: this is a gun show and that man is selling a gun no questions asked, no background check. >> i probably couldn't pass one. >> i don't care. >> huh? >> all i got to do is demand you

show me your license. >> you don't care about the background check, right? >> nope. i wouldn't pass either, bud. >> is that right? >> reporter: this is undercover video from sharonville, ohio, part of a nationwide investigation to expose what's wrong with what's known as the gun show loophole. unlike licensed dealers, the so-called gun show loophole allows unlicensed private sellers to sell guns without doing background checks on buyers. they're viewed as collectors who are occasional sellers so they fly under the radar. but, and this is key, while they're exempt from background checks, it is still illegal for private sellers to sell guns to anyone they know or have reason to believe would not pass a background check. which is exactly what some are caught doing on this video. why should you care? the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms says one in every three guns used in illegal gun trafficking is connected to a gun show.

>> this is real. this translates into people getting killed. children, adults, police officers, civilians. >> reporter: new york city mayor michael bloomberg calls for the investigation to get congress to act on two bills he says congress is sitting on that would force a background check on every single gun show purchase. the national rifle association has told us they've always supported strict enforcement of existing laws. though it would not comment when asked if the so-called gun show loophole should be closed. bloomberg says nine states and the district of columbia require that now. this is a gun show in reno, nevada, more than 40 undercover agents working for the mayor's office visited gun shows in other states. >> no background checks? >> no tax, no charges, nothing, just $500 and it's yours. >> i couldn't pass one. how much is it? >> $500. >> okay.
