it is a mystery there in arizona. police trying to figure out what killed two people during a sweat lodge ceremony. but the man who might have the answers, yeah he's not talking. find out what investigators uncovered so far. here's a question. what is the best way forward in afghanistan? the president is getting two very different answers from his fellow democrats. what they're advising the commander in chief. and conservative talk shoeft rush limbaugh is not shy about voicing his opinion and now some professional athletes are speaking up about him. why they say the nfl is no place for limbaugh. hln "news and views" on a monday. hope you're having a good one. hi there. i'm brooke baldwin. starting with a story out of arizona. they paid thousands of dollars for a self-help seminar. in the end required outside

help. you see, arizona officials want to know exactly what happened inside this makeshift sweat lodge in sedona that left two dead and sent 19 others to the hospital. all happening thursday night. the incident started when more than 60 people crammed into this tiny tent for what's called a cleansing ceremony. the ritual marked the end of this five-day spiritual retreat led by self-help guru james ray. now, the local county sheriff says ray is refusing to speak with authorities. in fact he has left the state now. so investigators wanting to see what's happening as far as toxicology results go to help determine if criminal negligence actually played a role in those deaths. our affiliate knxv has the story. >> a pulse? yes. >> okay. is this the result of a shooting or something? >> no. it was a sweat lodge.

>> are you by yourself? >> no. there's a lot of people here. >> all right. get them out of the sweat box for one thing. >> we are. >> reporter: 21 people rumpshed to area hospitals after sitting for hours in what was supposed to be a spiritual cleanse. >> surprised people would put themselves in that situation not surprised. people are looking for things to full fell themselves and give them purpose. >> reporter: 64 people here at a retreat by author james ray. you may have seen him on oprah or larry king. he helped write the book "the secret." investigators say some paid up to $9,000 to spend time with him. >> everybody has a right to believe and practice the way they wish to, but when it endangers the lives of others, or when you have to pay for it that's -- that's not a spiritual belief. >> reporter: sweat lodges of a sauna where water is poured over hot rocks and steam inside a

shelter. saying the structures are typically made of wood. one was made of plastic and blank is. our thanks to our affiliate in arizona for that report. an accused hijacker under arrest 40 years after the hijacking of pan am flight 281. luiz surrendered to federal authorities at jfk in new york. he flew there under the custody of state department personnel. back in 196 four hijackers forced the pan am plane to go to havana. two suspects pleaded guilty in the '70s another acquitted in 1969. a spokesman for senator max baucus is calling this insurance industry report which attacks the senate's health care reform, call it is a hatchet job. baucus' ten year $829 billion plan goes before the senate finance committee tomorrow for a vote. what's happening here with this report from the insurance here, insurance companies are claiming by the year 2013, the average

family's cost could go up by $1,700. single coverage tax payers, up by $600. by the year 2019 the new plan could raise the average family's plan by $4,000. what's the white house jay well, you can bet they came out saying the analysis was done by the insurance industry and, thus designed to reach a conclusion that benefits the industry themselves. in pakistan there has been yet another deadly attack on the military there. this marks the second one in just two days. at least 41 people were killed in a suicide car bombing happening at a security checkpoint there. six security officers are among the dead. a pakistani official says the tart was a military vehicle at a market in the valley where the pakistani army is battling taliban insurge pts for control. staying in pakistan, yesterday hundreds of hostages were freed during a massive gun battle. they were held for almost a day

after five militants some wearing explosive vests, seized the pakistan army's headquarters near islamabad. military officials say the taliban claimed responsibility for that. 11 military personnel and three civilian hostages died during that standoff. and from pakistan to afghanistan, hear two hauerful democratic senators with sharply different ideas what the president should do in that country. armed services chairman carl levitt is urging the president to take his time reviewing the goals for the war. and live beevin says there's no need to send in additional troops right now. senator dianne feinstein who chairs the senate intelligence committee disagrees as do congressional republicans. >> i don't think we can make the country into a jeff sewnian democracy but you've got to stabilize this country. you lead this country, and the taliban are increasing all of the time. they're taking over more.

it will have a dramatic impact on pakistan one day. i really believe that. >> i this great danger now is not an american pullout. the great danger now is a half measure. sort of a you know try to please all ends of the political spectrum. again, i have great sympathy for the president making the toughest decisions presidents have to make but i think he needs to use deliberate speed and i think he needs to adopt a strategy which he has basically articulated last march and before. >> afghanistan commander general stanley mcchrystal proposed deploying anywhere between 10,000 and 40,000 additional u.s. troops and we are hearing some horrific new details about last week's insurgent attack at that u.s. base in afghanistan. in total here, eight americans were killed. and apache chopper pilot describes getting the desperate call for help.

if you listen closely, you can hear his brothers sing backup. the song "this is it" featured in the upcoming film of the same name about jackson's never realized tour. a double cd featuring the song is expected to come out at end of the month. a woman led police on a scary high-speed chase with a child in the back seat. at one point she crashed but it wasn't the end of the drama.

the head of the nfl players association urging the unions members to speak out against rush limbaugh. you see the radio talk show host is now part of a group bidding to buy the st. louis rams. limbaugh has a bit of a past with the nfl with one player in particular. remember this back in 2003? he lost the job on espn and claimed philadelphia quarterback donovan mcnabb was getting credit he didn't deserve because

the media wants a black quarterback to do well. players union executive director smith says, sport in america is at its best when it unifies and transcends. our sport does exactly that when it rejects discrimination and hatred. we want to know your views on this. do you think nfl players or the union should have a say in who owns a football team? who writes that check? let's go straight to the phones and first talk to nancy calling from columbus, ohio. what do you think of all this? >> caller: i definitely believe they should have a say and should boycott any of his radio shows or anything he has to say, because he's a racist. he made no apology for the comment that he hoped president obama failed and my feelings are that these players are definitely, should have a say in this, and where did he get the money to buy the team? so i think things should be really looked into.

secretary of state hillary clinton has been pretty busy. met with leaders of northern ireland power sharing government in belfast today and later addressed the norch ireland assembly. clinton urged rival catholic and prot stant lawmakers to strengthen their power sharing government and told a packed cham burp the 2-year-old partnership is an inspiration to the world. >> you have brkecome a model for conflict reconciliation around the world. i hear that in my travels. people who are determined to choose peace and progress over violence and division look towards you and i'm here today to send a strong message that the obama administration and the united states are committed to supporting you as you continue your journey. >> clinton's visit to belfast is just the latest stop in our

european tour. she'll be traveling to moscow next. in new york, a grieving father is demanding accountability in the loss of his own child he was raising as single parent. 11-year-old leeandro's car flipped on a manhattan parkway. her friend's mom was behind the wheel. he thought she was at a slumber party. >> what was the thinking of this woman, who's a mother, and you're intoxicated. everyone needs to be held accountable for letting their children or any other family members sbet into the car with somebody under the influence of alcohol. >> 31-year-old carmen was hospitalized after the crash. the other kids in the car were treated for minor injuries. a utah music teacher died trying to steer a charter bus full of students to safety. the kids just won a band competition in idaho. the driver reportedly slumped over and woodwind teacher

heather christianson grabbed the wheel. if she hadn't done that the crash would have been worse. the driver is hospitalized in stable condition and the results of testing should be back in a couple of weeks. a dramatic shoot-out is caught on tape and what's even more dramatic, no one was hit. take a look at this. it's almost like "the sopranos" here, but it's not. what happened after a fistfight turned into a gun battle in a bar in toledo ho highway. people had already scrambled downout the door. >> listen to that. shortly after all the shots, a second camera captured these people outside firing into the bar. would you believe, like i said no one was hit, even though police found at least 17 shell casings they are still looking for the gunmen. unbelievable. did you know packers get paid to steal e-mail pass words? you might be surprised who's

how about this? a awoman, not only led florida deputies on a wild high-speed chase, she had a 7-year-old in the back seat of her car, clocked at speeds topping 110 miles an hour and at one point was going the wrong way. she finally you'll see here in a moment crashed into the guardrail. there she goes. even after getting out of her car, police say she refused to cooperate, so they tased her. the child was not hurt. ouch. an elderly massachusetts man is alive and safe all thanks to an off-duty firefighter. he spotted the man's 95-year-old -- the 95-year-old man's car, i should say sinking near a waterfront restaurant in essex. jumped in to save him. he held the imagine above the

rikt. rickette. he founded ameritrade. it clears the kay for the current owner to sell it and with a price tag of $185 million. a hearing on the bankruptcy filing is set for tomorrow. the sale, though, would still have to be approved by three quarters of mlb owners. thousands and thousands of americans, they are running out of unemployment benefits each and every day. but congress just might be coming to your rescue as early as this week we're hearing. stephanie elam is live with those details. members of congress throwing a bit of a lifeline, i guess. >> yes, hopefully, getting around to doing it quickly. that's true. the senate can vote tomorrow to extend benefits to millions of people out of work across the country. under the bill people in all 50 states would get an additional four weeks of unemployment benefits, and in states where the unemployment rate is above 8.5%, people will get an extra six weeks on top of that. currently 27 states bus d.c. and puerto rico fall into the

category. but the senate bill is a much different version than what the house passed last month. under that legislation, people would get an added 13 weeks of jobless benefits, but only in those 27 states where unemployment exceeds 8.5%. if the senate version passes it would have to be reconciled with the house version, of course. so brook there is still more wrangling to come on this one. >> so as there is wrangling to be done, let's talk numbers. how many americans are out there running out of benefits? chbts it's a big situation for a lot of people brook. the national employment law project says 400,000 people ran out of benefits in september, and another 208,000 are set to lose them this month. and if congress does not act nearly 1.5 million people will stop receiving checks by the end of the year. of course, there's always the question of, how is this going to be paid for? congress has already extended benefits twice during the recession. the senate bill would extend the unemployment tax paid for by employers through june of 2011. the house bill would extend the

and the debate rages. two powerful democratic senators have sharply different ideas about what the president should do in afghanistan. should we talk about that, or what we're looking at which i believe -- this is what happened earlier in san diego. a dramatic rescue operation in san diego. it is over. this is the tail end of what that was. a car went over a 1,500-foot cliff at point loma national monument. two people have been rescued. we don't know their condition, but local reports say the two might be this elderly couple. a state park ranger says their car lurched forward when the man was paying to enter the park. the man reportedly told the ranger he had problems with his foot. so the park ranger then says the car lurched again as the couple approached, and that's when it went over. so from that frightening rescue to something in philadelphia.

this is a crane collapse in downtown philly today. two people were seriously hurt crashed and crushed two nearby cars trees, buildings you can see there. according to local reports, a crane was positioned on the sidewalk when it fell over on to the the side. a whole lot of debris there. i can imagine a bunch of those roads are closed in philadelphia. a 70-year-old woman who apparently was in the cars down below, and a construction worker who fell 125 feet. so that is some updated information that we're able to bring you. as soon as we get more information on this crane collapse in downtown philadelphia, we will bring it to you here on hln. back to the situation in afghanistan here. two powerful democratic senators have sharply different ideas about what the president should do there in the country. on one side here, we're hearing from around services chair carl levin, and he is urging the president to take his time reviewing all the goals for the war. he says there was no need to send in additional u.s. combat troops, at least right now.

authorities want to talk with james arthur ray as they investigate this sweat lodge ceremony that left two people dead, 19 people injured. the sheriff's department is saying that ray has flat out refused to speak with authorities. in fact, he has left the state. officers now just trying to figure out if criminal negligence played a role in the deaths on friday. on his twitter page here's what ray said. he said he was shocked and he was saddened by the tragedy there. and accused hijacker under arrest 40 years after the hijacking of a pan am flight. he surrendered to federal authorities in new york. the jfk airport. he flew there under the custody of state department personnel. back in 1968, four hijackers forced that pan am plane to go to havana. two suspects pleaded guilty in the 1970s and another acquitted in 1969. hundreds of thousands of people from other countries are getting this country and staying well

after their visas expire. and the government, they can't track them. that's the gist of a "new york times" report that notes that tracking people entering the u.s. was supposed to be a top priority after 9/11. it quotes immigration officials who say nearly 3 million visitors entered the u.s. on temporary visas last year. but never officially checked out. many of them left anyway, but the problem here gained new attention. but officials believe several 100,000 remain in the states illegally. the problem gained new attention when officials revealed a 19-year-old jordanian accused of plotting to bomb a skyscraper had overstayed his visa. a spokesman for senator max baucus is calling an insurance industry report a hatchet job. it attacks the proposal itself. baucus's ten-year $829 billion overhaul plan goes before the senate finance committee

thousands of americans, may be understating it may be running out of unemployment benefits every day. stephanie elam is in new york with details. >> the senate could vote as soon as tomorrow to extend benefits to millions of people. people out of work in all 50 states would get an additional 14 weeks of unemployment benefits. in states where the unemployment rate is above 8.5%, people will

get an extra six weeks on top of that. currently 27 states plus d.c. and puerto rico fall into that category. the senate bill is much different than what passed the house last month. under that people will get an added 13 weeks of jobless benefits but only in the 27 states where unemployment exceeds 8.5%. it will have to be reconciled with the house version if it passes. >> they can continue to rangwrangle. how many americans will run out of benefits? >> 400,000 people ran out of benefits in september. another 208,000 are set to lose them this month. if congress does not act, nearly 1.5 million people will stop receiving checks by the end of the year. there's always one really large question looming out there. how will this be paid for? congress has extended benefits twice during the recession. the senate bill would extend the federal unemployment tax paid for by employers through june

reportedly drove over to a sidewalk grade that gave way. it was being used to work on a roof of a church there. witnesses say the crash sounded like an earthquake. and over to san diego a dramatic rescue operation in that area is now over. a car went over a 225 foot cliff near the lighthouse at point loma national monument. two people there have been rescued. we don't know their conditions but according to reports they were two elderly men. a state park ranger says they pulled into the park early this morning. the car lurched forward then. the man reportedly told the ranger he had problems with his foot. the ranger says the car lurched again as they parked near the edge of the cliff and that is when it went over. two powerful democratic senators have very different ideas what the president should do when it comes to moving forward in afghanistan.

he's one of 3 million children suffering from food allergies and they wanted to do something about it. so we gave him a camera. he took that up to capitol hill and he and 79 other kids went to talk to their legislators to do something about it. they want more safety regulations in place that would help kids like them. it's a growing concern, of course, not only among kids but among parents. a bill would create guidelines for schools basically to manage students who suffer from food allergies. it would also grant more money to take care of them. so kyle documented his trip exclusively for cnn.com. >> i'm at the capitol and i'm about to go talk to richard shelby about the law to help promote awareness.
