out? reality was much more down to earth. plus -- what? these men didn't just fight city hall they fought at city hall. what started this smackdown? that's more exciting than any city council meeting i've ever been to. and what started as a fever turned into a struggle just to walk again. a girl's inspiring victory over a swine flu horror story. our top story this morning, there are new details still on the story that had so many of you, maybe everyone that you knew, glued to the tv. the missing boy and a runaway balloon. for two hours no one knew if 6-year-old falcon heene was onboard this fast-moving balloon or had fallen out after it had taken off. turns out he was hiding in the attic the whole time. had his dad told our sister network cnn how they finally found falcon. >> we were sitting on the couch.

some of the folks were in the room helping to calm our nerves and my wife, i heard her scream, and so falcon came around the corner and, you know, i dropped to my knees and i screamed as well, here he is. he's safe. he's alive. it was a great moment. >> so why was the little boy hiding? reporters talked to falcon himself shortly after he was found. >> falcon, can you tell us, please, where you were hiding and why you stayed hidden so long? >> i was in the attic and he scared me because he yelled at me. that's why i went in the attic. i didn't come out soon or else he would yell at me and i would

get in trouble. >> now this all started when the boy's brother said that he had seen the 6-year-old climb inside the balloon before it took off yesterday morning. police and military helicopters tracked the balloon for 50 miles. cameras were rolling when the balloon finally came down in a field and you see the searchers running after it trying to catch it in case the little boy was inside. falcon was not inside. about two hours later to everyone's relief he came out of his hiding place. you know what, this is not the first time this family has been in the spotlight. they've even been on reality tv shows before. correspondent richard lui has more on who this family is in about ten minutes. what a story. you know, that story has everybody talking this morning, especially those of you who watched it unfold live and we want you to join the conversation so we're blogging about it on cnn.com/robin. you can go to cnn.com/robin and do that or go to our facebook page and send your comments. happening today defense

corners for casey anthony will be in court asking the judge to throw out the murder charges against her. they claim that investigators destroyed the crime scene when they recovered the body preventing defense experts from reviewing it. but prosecutors say that evidence taken from the scene was preserved and there are hundreds of photographs available to the defense, it says. we need to tell you about a new h1n1 warning this morning. the fda says absolutely do not buy any treatments you see for sale online. the agency says that it is test ing products found on the internet that claim they can help. and so far none of them has been approved in the united states. so the bottom line, talk to your doctor. president obama heads to texas a&m to speak at a forum on community service. now the event marks the 20th anniversary of president george h.w. bush's 1,000 points of light volunteer service movement. the former president invited president obama to speak. some republican and anti-tax

groups have said they're going to be there protesting. the president was in new orleans yesterday. he faced critics who said federal help for people recovering from hurricane katrina hasn't improved since he took office. >> i expected as much from the bush administration but why are we still being nickelled and dimed in our recovery? >> well, look, we are working as hard as we can as quickly as we can to process through so many of these issues. >> protesters greeted president obama at a democratic fund-raiser in san francisco yesterday. some were anti-war protesters from code pink. there were also health care reform protesters both for and against. in all, about 1,000 people showed up. democrats are fighting with each other over health care reform. yesterday they could not agree if a new plan should include an option for government sponsored

insurance. house speaker nancy pelosi insists that a public option would help the uninsured and keep medical costs down. critics argued that it would drive away private insurer paving the way for a government takeover. democrats will pick up the debate today. this wasn't your usual kind of boring city council meeting. these guys were fighting about a decision to privatize the city's sidewalk, a sidewalk in st. petersburg, florida. one of them is 76 years old and the brother of one of the councilmen, the other is 71. both were arrested for disorderly conduct which is a misdemeanor. >> stop it, you're going to break a shoulder. >> wow. this is the actual sound. something to listen to. they're now free on bond. a sidewalk.

"wife swap." maybe next time they should be on "kid swap," you know, if that were me. across the region a big storm developing with winter type weather into northern pennsylvania. heavy snow is out there mainly in the higher elevations. going to get to northern p.a., the lower sections of the state where snow is falling. we're going to get about a total of 10 inches around northern p.a. but for the rest of you in the

for a show. >> okay. that was falcon heene, the boy at the center of yesterday's balloon chase. did you hear when asked about what falcon meant, because the little boy said we did it for the show, his dad said, he was appalled by the question and his son was probably talking about all the media coverage because by that time he had seen all kinds of cameras around. authorities do not think this was any kind of hoax or stunt. correspondent richard lui, this is not the first time this family has been in the spotlight nationally. we have seen them on tv before. remind us. we have, robin. the dad is a meteorologist and former tv weather guy. according to his myspace page they are known for storm chasing and conducting extreme science experiments together. though he says his family is never put in harm's way. now submitted as well i-reports to cnn including this one. take a look where they are chasing hurricane gus to have. >> we are the storm chase family. this is my brother, falcon, and my mom on camera. we're in the middle of hurricane

the deaths of two people in an arizona sweat lodge is now a homicide investigation. a sweat lodge is used for cleansing exercises. this was a retreat led by self-help expert james arthur ray. the sheriff says they're looking into how the sweat lodge was built. ray's spokesperson says authorities don't have all the facts and that the word homicide is inflammatory. take a look at this horse

rescue. sparkles, right here, was trapped in a hole in the blazing heat for more than two hours. it happened southeast of phoenix. well, vets showed up to give her medicine to keep her calm and fire crews sprayed her to keep her cool until finally they were able to pull her out. poor sparkle. sparkle. so sweet. all right, one college football team keeps winning and it says that a 12-year-old cancer survivor is their inspiration. here's rafer with the story. good morning. this has been a great story and a surprising story from a sports standpoint. the cincinnati bearcats have been one of college football's biggest surprises this year. these guys just keep on winning. well, the team told "the new york times" their inspired play comes from a 12-year-old boy battling a brain tumor named mitch stone. the bearcats adopted mitch through the charity friends of jacqueline which pairs kids battling brain cancer with sports teams. they kept it rolling. they beat south florida 34-17 to keep their unbeaten streak alive

and mitch, too, says he has been inspired by this team seeing them win on the field. that has boosted his spirits to win his battle against cancer. lebron james has been treated for the flu and doctors are treating it as if he has the h1n1 virus. lebron and two teammates tested positive for a similar strain. they were sick for three days. we don't know if he has the swine mru yet but the team is being careful. >> you come back like you have the cooties and at the don't want to be around you no more. >> are you contagious? >> i think i'm over it now. if you get sick -- >> i hope you're over it. usc running back johnson surprised his teammates by showing up in practice thursday after leaving the hospital. johnson, look at him there, recovering from a crushed larynx after he dropped a 270-pound weight bar on his throat. >> he looks like he has great energy. >> he still cannot speak yet

station and a mosque in northwest pakistan near the afghanistan border. taliban presence is strong there. this is the latest in a wave of deadly attacks. three missing hikers were found stranded on a ledge above a water fall here at california's king canyon national park. a rescue helicopter spotted them. they've been missing since monday and had an emotional reunion with family yesterday. a hearing for three people accused of illegally giving prescription drugs to anna nicole smith. yesterday he barred prosecutors from asking a witness if there was a sexual relationship between smith and her female psychiatrist. smith died of a drug overdose in 2007. well, good morning, sleepy head. it's friday. i hope that makes you feel better. i'm robin meade. here is what's going on today in the news. the top story, one that you just cannot take your eyes off of, so many people followed this as it unfolded. if you missed it, here's the

deal. a little boy believed to be on this runaway balloon later, hours later, was found safe at home. correspondent richard lui, let's talk about this thing, this balloon. it's a homemade aircraft the man was working on, looks like a flying saucer. >> or a giant cupcake. doesn't look like a typical balloon. it was 20 feet in diameter, five feet tall. while it was airborne authorities say it reached as high as 7,000 feet. dad referred to the balloon as a 3d low altitude vehicle. he said he wanteded to build a balloon someone could operate from inside hovering as much as 100 feet above the ground and now it is possible to build a balloon and fly it legally but a spokesperson tells "usa today," hey, it's not likely heene's balloon met federal standards. >> so many people watched and listened as the story unfoldeded. think about it. maybe you're at work, people looked up at the monitor and your heart stops. this thing is flying and the graphics say boy inside, thought

minutes ago. 115 miles from jakarta, the capital of indonesia. they've had a lot of these lately. the u.s. geological survey says this one has a magnitude that was 6.5. the local meteorological agency says the quake was not strong enough to cause a tsunami. children from five towns in connecticut lined up for their h1n1 flu shots yesterday. few cried, though, because this is the nasal vaccination and it's not a shot. the sheer number of kids getting vaccinated brought relief to some parents. >> i was surprised because, you know, a lot of my friends are asking to not get it. i was on the outskirts. but to see so many parents and children here opt to go get it, i was happy. it made me feel reassured. well, the health director in charge says that he hopes to get the vaccine shipments each week. crews are searching the atlantic for an f-16 that collided with another jet during training exercises.

they hit each other near the south carolina coast last night. one of the jets landed safely but the location of a pilot and the other plane is still unknown. now the air force has been doing tests at night so the pilots can train with night vision equipment. you need to see this frightening video from a security camera in an australian train station. that is a baby stroller. a train hits the baby stroller. now it's a miracle the baby just had minor injuries. you see the stroller roll off the platform. the mother rolls after it as the train rolls in. rescuers say the baby was strapped in the stroller and that's probably what saved its life. i cannot imagine what that mother did after that. >> wow. >> yeah. >> 35 minutes past the hour. a couple of stories between the boy in the balloon story and the kid stroller makes you go i like my calm, boring life. how about you? >> my son goes to pre-k and

kindergarten and doesn't say a word. just goes back and does his work. that's all i want. hey, our first winter type storm developing right now, really developed yesterday afternoon across northern pennsylvania. now across southern new york state, too, all the white, all snow coming in. temperatures obviously below freezing especially in the higher terrain above about 1,000 feet. that's where the snow is all falling but it's a heavy, wet snow. we've seen many power outages for northern pennsylvania. take that snow and brings down the limbs on the power lines. that's where we're having problems. get closer to the coast, though and it's all rain. boston, stretching down to cape cod area. you're also looking at a windy day around the region. warnings from nantucket. look at wind in western and central pennsylvania. all snow. you can tell that by the look on the radar here. that's all snow. the warnings are out there. the white shaded counties all in a winter storm watch basically for a new storm that develops

overnight tonight and lasts through tomorrow morning. we're all looking at the warnings right now. areas shaded in red, four to ten inches of snow total in the highest terrain. that's what we're watching. a wind advisory from the yellow shaded areas. winds warning for nantucket gusting over 60 miles an hour and then you get on the jersey shore, see a nice wind out of the east for the next couple of days going to bring a lot of rain and coastal flooding. yankee game tonight, windy, breezy and lots of rain. more on that in about a half hour. >> thank you. bring up banning smoking at your local restaurant or bar and you're liable to get a very heated response. pro or people against.

hey, in louisiana civil rights activists wanted a justice of the peace to resign for not giving a marriage license to an interracial couple. he's not a racist but feels interracial marriages don't usually last. the groom had this to say about those views. >> he's say iing a lot end in divorce but how many people get married and wind up in divorce, white or black? >> well, the couple ended up going to another justice of the peace where they were finally married. all right, jennifer is out today so let me cover some of the biz news. ken lewis of bank of america is stepping down at the end of the year, will receive no salary or bonus this year. the bank says he agreed to forgo his $1.5 million salary at the

urging of the treasury pay czar. lewis will still get about $69 million in pension and benefits from the company when he leaves. microsoft says it has recovered most if not all of the data that disappeared last weekend. earlier this week t-mobile says the photos, phone numbers and other data was probably gone. microsoft makes the phones for t-mobile says it has now found the data and will restore it soon. if you want to book airline tickets for this holiday season expect to pay more. "the new york times" reports prices are rising almost on a daily basis with the fares for thanksgiving travel up 6% in the last week alone. last year people got some great deals because the airlines were caught off guard by a big drop in demand. >> joy behar talked to actor and comedian about his new novel. they touched on things like discrimination. people do skirt the racist

ground stop at 7:30 this morning, low clouds. more on that in a little bit. call it preseason training for the snowplow drivers. hundreds of truck drivers in ohio took part in the annual snowplow rodeo to get their skills ready for the winter. drivers were judged on skills like avoiding mailboxes, very important, and parked cars, even more important. they also have to show they can inspect their own vehicles to make sure they're ready to go. >> got to make it fun somehow. it's a tough job. all right. a simple gesture at a high school football game is causing a whole lot of commotion in one small town. rafer, what's going on? >> it's a polarizing issue, robin. we want to know what you think about this. 17-year-old r.j. davis from fitzgerald, georgia, considers himself to be a religious young man. well, folks are upset over the treatment he got when after he scored he pointed to the skies, says he was giving thanks to god. the refs didn't like it. penalized his team 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. the rules say a player can't

commission is stepping in to keep the power on and state politicians want to change the law to allow exceptions for customers like her. >> people recognize she is a customer that is defined as a critical care well, the power c it welcomes the opportunity to improve and their very responsive to complaints from the utilities commission. people are really responding to that woman's story. hundreds have volunteered to help pay her electricity bill. have you noticed that toyota has had two massive recalls in just the past month? one involved a faulty cruise control device, and the other one has a very simple fix that you can do at home. so hln money expert clark howard has some tips easy to use that could keep you safe on the road. >> by now, i hope everybody in america has a toyota or lexus made between 2004 and 2010 has
