authorities say the whole balloon boy incident was a hoax. last thursday you sma been among the millions all over the world who watched what they thought was a runaway balloon way little boy inside. investigators believe 6-year-old falcon heene's parents orchestrated it to get a reality tv show. the sheriff says the couple is used to being onstage. >> after the fact we have since learned, as many of you have, that these people are actors. not only have they appeared in several reality television shows and on youtubes, we have since determined that, in fact, they met together, the way that they met, established a relationship, was in acting school. >> authorities say an interview the family did on cnn's "larry king live" was the turning point. at one point falcon seemed to suggest the incident was for show. the heenes' repeatedly denied. >> i felt extremely betrayed.

angry for my kids. you don't upset children and use your own child to try and benefit yourself. >> well, the heenes have a lawyer. you're going to hear what he has to say about possible felony charges. in less than ten minutes, let me poent out the authorities are the ones saying it bass a hoax. we don't have anybody admitting from the family that was it. more from their attorney. and a huge shift in what the police says use of marijuana. the obama administration will announce today will going to stop going after patients who use medical marijuana as long as it's legal in their state. the same goes for their suppliers. sources say the justice department decided that it has more important things to worry about. new this morning, a u.s. soldier was killed yesterday in a car accident in northern iraq. military officials say that two other troops were injured. the crash is under investigation. 4,350 military personnel have died in iraq since the war started six years ago.

and one of them sounded a lot like what happened last week. >> the idea that they had proposed was sort of re-enacting the roswell ufo phenomenon, that they would launch this weather balloon and i guess make people believe that it was -- it was a ufo, and exploit that controversy as a way to promote this television show. >> and thomas also said the proposal they did discuss did not involve the kids. meanwhile, the sheriff wants to charge heene and his wife with at least three felonies including conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and attempting to influence a public servant. now, the family's lawyer says he hasn't seen any evidence beyond speculation, but he says the heenes are willing to turn themselves in. >> i think it's child abuse for law enforcement to slap the cuffs on a couple of parents in the presence of three kids and haul them off to jail. when those parents are facing

low-level charges, and have expressed a willingness to turn themselves in. >> the sheaest said it's not likely they would serve jailtime if convicted. so if an ad says we can get rid of anything on your credit score, you bet are watch out. people who are desperate to clean up their credit reports are getting ripped off. our money expert jennifer westhoven is looking after that. >> a lot of people now especially with interest rates so low, thinking, i could only refinance if i could just clean up my credit score. be careful, though. there are two companies, they're small companies, settling with the ftc, but it's a good reminder that in case you were hoping that some company could come in, waive their magic wand and clean up your credit report, they can't. they can't legally do that. nothing on your credit report can be removed if it's true and current. those are the ftc rules. any company that promises you

afghanistan is facing a crisis that could impact whether more u.s. troops get sent there. two officials tell the associated press that enough ballots were thrown out to trigger a runoff in afghanistan's august presidential election. they say they've seen the results of the ballot fraud investigation. the white house says it can't decide on troops until it gets worked out. >> the question does not come, how many troops you send, but do you have a credible afghan partner for this process that can provide the security and the type of services the afghan people need? >> president karz karzai is on the ballot. the main challenger says karzai's influencing the process. karzai denies this.

morning to you. the sheriff admitted they were intentionally misleading the media? >> reporter: right. >> i guess a tactic here. >> reporter: right. their move. the sheriff said she needed to keep the trust of the family there so that they would be able to interview each and every one of them. that's what they wanted to do. continue to keep that conversation with the investigators, and, again, objective here, have separate interviews with each member of the family. >> mr. heene voluntarily came in here under the pretext of, we were going to return his aircraft to him. unbeknownst to him at the same time, the minute he hit the door here, we had investigators prepare to go to the house and talk to ms. heene and try to gain her cooperation as well as conduct interviews with her and the children. >> now, the heene's attorney also agreed to lie detector tests and did take them, but the sheriff has not told them if they passed or not, robin. >> so investigators also say there's no way that little 6-year-old falcon could have

been in the balloon. now they're talking science, i guess. >> they are. dg calculations. when it started the sheriff's department called a balloon expert at colorado university. given the dimensions provided at the time, he said the balloon would have been able to carry the 37-pound boy. once it landed they found out the balloon agos 18 pounds more than heene originally said. experts say that means it would not have been able to lift off with the boy onboard. that balloon is about, four, five feet tall, 18, 20 feet in diameter. rob robin? >> in other words, authorities are thinking heene knew it couldn't lift the boy yet told everyone he was afraid maybe the boy was in there. >> when they look at the calculations. >> it's a story dominating the news and your thoughts. on our facebook page, dana says, people will do anything to get attention or a reality show nowadays. really sad. but even more pathetic to exploit your own family. charity says, pay all rescue

collapsed and died during a marathon in detroit. this morning, the first time i learned it was a half marathon. so they had obviously less exhaustion than someone in a marathon would. so what gives? >> the big question, robin, that hasn't been answered. all three of these guys died of cardiac arrest. the weather was cool, ideal for running. get this, all men collapsed with 20 minutes of one another. the first a 36-year-old man at 9:00 a.m. then a 65-year-old man who we're told had a massive heart attack and hit the ground incredibly hard and then a 26-year-old man collapsed after he crossed the finish line. all of the men were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead. officials say they had six medical stations and 60 medical professionals on scene. by the way, robin, the last time somebody died with this marathon, or involved with it, 1994. back to you. >> thank you. we've got really incredible video of a bus smashing into an suv in new mexico. this is what it looked like when

almost 30,000 soldiers have fought their way into the heart

of the taliban territory. that's from pakistan officials. the country has lost a massive offensive against militants near the afghanistan border. military reps say this is important because the area is a power base for insurgents. now, they've been blamed for deadly bombings over the last few weeks. did you know pet turtles can carry dangerous salmonella? apparently plenty of parents didn't know. researchers say that small turtles made over 100 people sick during an outbreak that started in 2007, and most of them were kids. smelling -- selling small turtles -- smelling -- as pets has been banned since 1975, butmenty of still sold illegally. now, the ban affects turtles smaller than four inches around. secure jobs and a chance to serve with the unemployment rates rising. more young plen and women are turning to the military. our money expert jennifer westhoven is here. i think some people were

slightly surprised by that, because we are involved in two wars that have lasted a long time, but still the recruitment numbers have been fulfilled. >> yeah. haven't been so popular, yet a lot of people signing up. the military says it has a lot to do with the economy. we wanted to take you inside. we talked about how the pentagon meet or beat its recruitment goals. first of all, recruits can typically make, recruits, about $18,000 a year by the end of their first year. plus they get free health care, they get housing allowance, food allowances, and, of course, i'm sure you know they've been waving around big bonuses to try and get people to sign up. look at that. you can make almost a year's worth of salary just to sign up. some of the dollars there. also, good news for the pentagon, for everybody. they said the newest ranks really well educated, 96% are high school graduates. above their targets. remember, for a while, right? there was criticism they were trying to get anybody they could to sign up.

they're meeting what they call their own quality targets. women's pay has risen faster than mens in this recession. in the past two years the median wages for women up more than 3%. just 2% for the guys. that's the "wall street journal" citing government data. now, men still make more than women do. $155 mariaa week. but the recession hit men harder. construction and factory jobs, meanwhile, women's fields have done better. education and health care. this isn't the way you like to see progress at all, but interesting to see some is happening. back to you. >> calling it the mancession, basically. good morning. how are you doing? it's monday. gosh, that was a quick weekend, wasn't it? i'll tell you what, during the weekend and overnight we've had a lot of new stories come in. i'm robin meade. let's get the news in the fast lane. >> we have evidence at this point to indicate that it was a publicity stunt. >> the balloon boy saga takes a new twist. why authorities now say the whole thing was a hoax. a university of connecticut football star was awarded saturday's game ball. but a few hours later, he was stabbed to death. a terrifying bus crash is caught on tape. nobody seriously hurt.

you may not believe that when you see what happened to the suv involved. first, though, a 6-year-old boy's parents will probably face charges for allegedly staging the story that he floated away in a balloon. now, last thursday you may have been among the millions all over the world who watched what they thought was a runaway balloon with a little boy possibly inside. the colorado authorities say it was a publicity stunt so the heene family could get their own reality tv show. >> after the fact we have since learned as many of you have that these people are actors. not only have they appeared in several reality television shows and on youtubes, we have since determined that, in fact, they met together, the way that may met and established their relationship was in acting school. >> authorities say in an interview the family did on cnn's "larry king live" was the turning point. at one point falcon seemed to suggest that the incident was for a show. but the heenes denied it was a

hoax. their neighbors are still outraged. >> i feel extremely betrayed. i am angry for my kids. you don't upset children. and you don't use your own child to try and benefit yourself. >> the heenes do have a lawyer. in about ten minutes you're going to hear what he said this morning about possible felony charges. a u.s. soldier has been killed in a car accident in northern iraq. this happened yesterday. a military official says two other troops were injured. the crash is under investigation. 4,350 military personnel have died in iraq since the war started six years ago. new this morning, a huge shift in the way that the government polices marijuana. two justice department officials say that the obama administration will announce today that it's going to stop going after patients who use medical marijuana as long as it's legal in their state. the same goes for their suppliers. sources say that the justice department decided that it has more important things to worry about. an air force pilot who died

in a mid-air collision never had a chance to eject. that is what a military official says. the pilot's f-16 collided with another military jet. authorities are still searching for his remains. the other pilot landed safely, but was injured. they were doing training maneuvers over the atlantic near south carolina. a connecticut football player and soon to be dad was stabbed to death on campus. here's rafer with more on this. it's a heartbreaking story. >> yeah, robin. the victim's mother said she got a phone call from this young man because he was thrilled after having been given the game ball. hours later, she got another call saying her son had been killed. suspects are still looking for the man or men who stabbed and killed 20-year-old jasper howard. it happened on campus during a school sanctioned dance outside of the student union. police say someone pulled a fire alarm in the building. then there was an altercation outside. that's when the stabbing occurred. howard, as robin said, a soon to be father. he'd just had the best game of his career in a win over

louisville. he had hoped to play in the nfl. number 6 there. his teammates talked about his unborn child. >> the idea that he will grow up without his father tears me apart. just it ain't what it would be like for that young child. but as jazz looks down on us, i can promise him and his family that son will have 105 -- or daughter will have 105 uncles for the rest of its life. >> he was the first one in the family to attend college. his mom said he was a good kid who never got into trouble. >> there's no more explanation this morning just yet about what was going on? there was a fight and he ended up being stabbed? >> police say they believe the suspects do not g to school at uconn. they don't have any other

these are record breaking temperatures. >> i had to turn on the heat last night. way early. back to our stop story, authorities are now calling the whole balloon boy thing a hoax. and they say that a researcher who worked for the boy's father has some unique insight to back up their claims. one state is setting guidelines in the case of a massive flu epidemic. reports say some very sick people could be denied certain care if there is an outbreak.

about. the balloon boy incident that police are now calling a hoax. the sheriff in larimer county, colorado, says richard heene staged the whole thing to try to get a reality tv show. now, correspondent richard lui, i guess i should point out here that the heenes are not admitting anything. you know, this is just what authorities are saying. >> right. >> someone that used to work with richard is cooperating with that claim, it seems like. >> that's right. he has been speaking out. robert thomas is his name. he's a student at colorado state university. in that paid interview i was telling you about, he said he worked for richard heene for about two months earlier this year. thomas told the website he ended uptaking down heene's reality show proposals, writing them down for him. one of them sounded a lot like what happened last week. >> the idea that they had proposed was sort of re-enacting the roswell ufo phenomenon. that they would launch this weather balloon and i guess make

people believe that it was a ufo and exploit that controversy as a way to promote this television show. >> kind of close there. thomas also saying, robin, the proposal they discussed at that time did not involve the kids, though. >> you know, investigators reportedly called thomas in to hear his story firsthand. it looks like they've been going forward with criminal charges against the heenes, or they intend to can be anyway. >> intend to, right. the sheriff plans to recommend at least three felony charges against heene and his wife including conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and attempting to influence a public servant. the family's lawyer just spoke to our sister network, cnn, he said he's not ready to comment on their guilt or innocence. >> i need to see what the evidence shows in this case. the sheriff isn't required to share their evidence with me until charges are filed. i have not seen anything other than a press conference by law enforcement. until that point where they have to give up their evidence, you

story. correspondent richard lui, the sheriff has admitted that they intentionally misled some folks. >> uh-huh. that's right. >> i guess this was their m.o. >> it was their plan. the sheriff says they needed to keep the heene family's trust so they could continue talking to investigators. they especially wanted to get separate interviews with each member of the family. take a listen. >> mr. heene voluntarily came in here under the pretext of we were going to return his aircraft to him. unbeknownst to him at the same time, the minute he hit the door here, we had investigators prepared to go to the house and talk to mrs. heene and try to gain her cooperation as well as conduct interviews with her and the children. >> the heenes' attorney says they also agreed to lie detector tests. so they took them. but the sheriff, robin, has not told him yet whether they passed or not. >> the sheriff says he plans to charge heene and his wife with at least three felonies. that's a change. >> uh-huh. >> there's also a chance that

they're going to have to pay back the cost of the search effort. how much you talking here? >> taking some guesses at it, authorities haven't released an official total, robin. the cost for just the two military hospitals involved in this search was about $14,000. then you add in the salary for more than 100 emergency personnel. and the estimate goes well over $30,000. the sheriff said last week he would seek restitution if they could prove criminal conduct. the heenes could also, robin, be sued for damage to the wheat field where the balloon finally lan landed as you see in that picture there. >> it's a story that a lot of you have been commenting on. that was friday. now you're commenting again now that authorities say it's a hoax. christopher a. writes, if this hoax is true, there are two concerns that must be addressed, which are the fitness of the parents as the primary caregivers of their three boys and illegal repercussions they must face. either way the future doesn't look too good for them.

after a boy was beaten to death several weeks ago, president obama sent members of his cabinet to chicago to push for solutions to the violence. the pentagon is putting the brakes on troop deployments to iraq. 3,500 troops were scheduled to go in january. and the combat unit that they were supposed to replace is still scheduled to come home. a pentagon spokesperson says that this means that iraqry security forces are improving. president obama is deciding whether to send more troops to afghanistan now. three men unexpectedly collapsed and died during a half marathon in detroit. here's rafer. it wasn't exactly like a hot day or something? >> no, robin. upper 20s. upper 30s. by the time these guys were running it was 40 degrees. all three of them were half marathoners. authorities will perform autopsies on all three of them today. but right now they're saying cardiac arrest is the cause of death. they all collapsed within 20 minutes of each other.

a a 36-year-old man at 9:00 a.m., 65-year-old, and a 26-year-old man that collapsed after crossing the finish line. all pronounced dead at the hospital. they have six medical stations and 60 medical professionals on scene at the time. robin? >> strange. i wonder, you know, what the deal was, why three of them collapsed? all right. we just got some incredible video of a bus smashing into an suv in mexico. this was from inside the bus here when it couldn't stop in time for an suv making a turn. officials say that the bus driver is not at fault. check out the suv, flat as a pancake. it took two hours to get the driver out. shockingly, he doesn't have any life threatening injuries, thankfully. okay. back to the whole balloon boy thing. i'm more concerned if it is true, about the kids. the little boy was obviously upset the morning after.

fake things, problems, mistakes on your credit report can be removed. if it's true and current, they're stuck there. that's the ftc rule. beware of a company that says we can get rid of anything on your credit report. that should tip you off there's a scam happening. a lot of people are getting ripped off. i want you to be careful. plus make sure if a company says they can help you that they fully deliver on their promise before you give them any money. that's another ftc rule that's out there. some companies are getting in trouble for crossing the line. all right. this story is -- it's a little bit morbid. another industry hurt by the recession. cemeteries. this is on the front page of this morning's "usa today." a big reason cemeteries are in trouble? more people are opting for cremation because it's a lot cheaper. only about $3,000 whereas a full funeral can cost you more than twice that. women's pay. it's risen a lot faster than men's during this recession.

in the past two years, median wages for women, they're up more than 3%. while for men just 2%. that's "the wall street journal" citing government data. it's not really a way that you like to see progress. men are still making a lot more than women. about $155 more a week for a full-time job. we know the recession has hit men harder. it's really eaten into industries that are traditionally male. like construction, factory job. meanwhile where the jobs are getting created are places that are traditionally women's jobs like health care and education. >> i guess it's hit men so hard they're calling it the m mancession. one of the popular costumes this halloween may not be very scary. but it's making some people very angry.

palin is taking her job hunt online. she's posted a resume on linked in. that's a social networking website known as kind of like the facebook for professionals. it lists her work experience including her stint as vice presidential candidate. he says she's interested in job inquiries, business deals, and getting back in touch. movie director roman powe l polanski has been moved out of jail and into a hospital for medical treatment. he's depressed and worried about his health. the lawyer also says he's not sure when polanski will return to prison. polanski is facing extradition to the united states for a sex case with an underage girl in 1977. next week some murderers and rapists serving a life sentence in north carolina could get out. an inmate had argued that a 1974 state law set a life sentence as 80 years. courts have agreed. and with good behavior credit, some sentenced at that time could be released.

someone who worked with heene is kind of cooperating it seems. >> he's a student at colorado state university and in the paid interview, he said he worked for richard heene for about two months earlier this year. he told a website he ended up writing down heene's reality show proposals and one sounded like what happened last week. >> the idea they had proposed, re-enacting sort of the roswell ufo phenomenon, that they would launch this weather balloon and make people believe it was a ufo and exploit that controversy as a way to promote this television show. >> and thomas also said the proposal they discussed did not involve the kids. meanwhile, the sheriff wants to charge heene and his wife with conspiracy, contributing to the delink winsy of a minor.

maker said sales fell. comes a week after mattel reported lower sales and profit. which brings us to toy retailers. toys "r" us jumping on the bandwagon. we can be moan the fact that the dow was first here ten years ago, but you know what? nothing like what happened 22 years ago on this day, also a monday, black monday. the dow plunged more than 500 points, a drop of nearly 23%. that was the biggest one-day percentage decline ever. we know it was the crash of '87. here, medical staff were actually on the trading floor because people were hyper ventilating. it was panic. it can't be repeated because they put in measures, the change put in measurings so that if
