senator john kerry there as well. next hour the university of connecticut football coach holds his weekly football conference. we expect him to talk about the stabbing death of one of his players, jasper howard. police have told him his client will be taken into custody any day now. his client was there when howard was stabbed but was not the one who did it. police have not named a suspect in this case as of yet. and now those you see there are howard's parents heart broken at one of the vigils last night the stabbing has dominated talk on campus. >> something happens like this, and it's almost too close to home. it is close to home because it's here. >> everybody wants to find this killer. he needs to do his time. he needs to serve. >> one man was arrested at the scene on sunday but his lawyer says he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time and he has not been charged in the

killing. we have a murder suspect that's just been added to the fbi's top ten most wanted list. joe saenz is wanted in connection with four killings a kidnapping and a rape. investigators thought he might be dead but then they saw a videotape that shows him killing somebody execution style. and in the war on terror, at least four people have been killed in suicide attacks in pakistan today. for weeks militants have been retaliating against a military offensive against insurgents along the afghanistan-pakistan border. more than 12,000 students from all over the world go to the university in pakistan. we're looking at this area that's right outside of detroit south. live pictures from wdiv. and according to the local media

there, police have said that there have been no explosions but they are foaming down everything in that section, in that area there are no reports of injuries and you can see the thick, black smoke, what looks to be black and a little bit of white as well. we'll keep you posted on any new information on this potentially dangerous situation that's coming out of the midwest at the moment. prosecutors say that rod blagojevich's appearance on a reality show has talked about -- the reality show may air during jury selection, but they did not ask the judge to bar blagojevich from the show. they said it's unfair to stop blagojevich from declaring his innocence. >> this is the first time i have ever heard of a law enforcement official coming to court and saying, judge, please shut the defendant up. usually it's the exact opposite.

new this morning, an experimental aids vaccine may give you only limited protection against the disease. but blood samples from the trial could show scientists how to make a vaccine. these vaccines may work better in the general population than in high risk groups. the man at the center of the balloon boy incident has been arrested before. richard henne pleased no contest to vandalism charges back in 1997, he got 30 days in jail and two years probation as a result. flan dis 911 dispatchers also got a call from henne's home this year. those are some possible run-ins

in the past with richard henne. the kids are staying with their parents for now. one legal analyst saying cps will look into more than just the alleged hoax itself. >> getting the children to lie to the police and to the media potentially endangering the children by taking them storm chasing, engaging in this crazy behavior. that's why they're being looked at by cps, not just the hoax. >> richard henne has said no one has contacted him or his client about taking the children away. you know those reports who say a glass of beer or wine a day is good for you. they warn that any alcohol -- you're much better off eating more fruits and vegetables.

hey, jen, this is when you were telling this story earlier throughout the morning, i was listening, i was going i can't believe this, because when we buy appliances and we have those reports about what may be saving energy or not, it's possible that they may not be true. >> that's what seems to be the story here and there are a lot of different reports confirming this, including the energy department. that label is supposed to mean that the department is saving energy, and in conjunction with the energy department, it's also like a sale of approval. florida reports that many of the appliances with that energy star sticker shouldn't qualify at all for that sticker. here's consumer reports, they were talking to cnn's mary snow. >> in your labs we found it used a lot more energy than it claimed. >> reporter: so can a manufacturer just put on an

were gunning each other they were undercutting the prices on some hot hard cover books. then target jumped in, they said $8.99 and we're talking about $8.98 so some big best sellers. >> i can do it in three notes. how low can they go? your friends on twitter, face book and other social net working sites could be criminals in addition guise. the fbi says cyber crooks are trolling the sites and hijacking people's profiles. you might get a message from someone profileosing as your friend trying to get you to wire them money. the fbi's advice here always double check these sorts of requests in person. so be careful. there's a new warning, if you take your kids around in car

seats outside the car a study cited says nearly 9,000 infants end up in the emergency room each year because of car seat misuse. most of the injuries happened when car seats fell off counters of table tops. babies should not be carried around in their car seats for an extended period of time. this coyote is missing. plus the colorado balloon chase may have been a hoax, but it is bringing back memories of the original balloon boy other than 70 years ago.

we're watching a fire that's ongoing at the great lakes steel plant that's close to detroit, michigan, the area is just about south of detroit. according to local media, police say there's been no explosions but they are foaming down everything in the area. we're getting reports from a chopper here and there. we'll get that report when we can. a former u.s. government scientist will be in court today to face charges that he allegedly tried to sell classified information to the israeli government. now stewart nozit is charged with espionage after allegedly trying to sell secrets to an fbi agent posing as an israeli intelligence official. the colorado balloon chase may have been a hoax but it is bringing back memories of the original balloon boy. now bill crawford was 4 years old in 1933. his dad would strap him under a

that at least two teammates were with jasper howard the night he was killed. now one of them held howard in his arms as he lay there dying while another player gave the kid first aid. the coach says those two players more than likely will be excused from suiting up against the game against west virginia. a 19-year-old named bryan parker was also stabbed in the melee. there's going to be events every day on campus to remember him. lebron james apparently had a cancer scare. doctors discovered a growth in his jaw in january. they did a biopsy. he did have surgery to remove the growth in june and it was benign. that was after their season ended. two baseball playoff games the same exciting result. first the world champion phillies pulled off some

late-game heroics down one in the bottom of the ninth to the dodgers, jimmy rollins scores a double for two. they're one win away from getting back to the world series. and in anaheim, the l.a. angels taking on the yankees. the two were tied in the 11th anything when jeff mathis scored the winning run. they say l.a. fans are apathetic, richard, no, they are not. all right lastly the mayor of green bay is asking for tasteful suggestions on the ways to welcome brett favre's homecoming. a few suggestions, a large number four waffle. have the fans wear flip-flops how would they tell? plus it will be cold. and my suggestion, give him a standing ovation. he helped them win a super bowl he was there for 16 seasons. give him a standing o.

there will be an arrest soon in the stabbing death of a university of connecticut football player. the defense lawyer saying police have told them they intend to take his client into custody. the lawyer says the man did not stab jasper howard but was there

when it happened. at least four people were killed in two back to back suicide attacks in pakistan this morning. authorities in islamabad says about 13 others were wounded. it's the latest of suicide attacks in that country. they are retaliating against a military offense. and the father of anna nicole smith's daughter says he was pressured to beef up his testimony about the role that her former boyfriend had in her medication. larry birkhead claims a prosecutor told him his daughter might be affected by smith's drug use. the da's office says it's discussing the prosecutor's future role in the case. and we heard this this morning, a run offoff election to determine afghan's next president will be held next month. it was found that a third of hamid karzai's votes were not

in to several parts of the country. in south florida for instance several people lined up to get vaccinated for the h1n1 virus there, but health officials were only giving it out to higher risk patients like babies pregnant women and the chronically ill. >> i have several severe illnesses and i don't want to put my grandchildren in danger and they go to public school and i don't want them to be in danger so i told my daughter as soon as it miami we would like to be first. >> federal health officials say despite the slow delivery of the swine flu vaccine, there is no reason to panic. however there's been a rise recently in both the swine and the seasonal flu around the country. authorities can file charges next week in the balloon boy saga. meanwhile two people have come forward with new insight into richard henne. she told the associated press he still owes her a $2,000 security

that's the bay bridge you can see it socked on in. that's why they have an hour delay at the airport in san francisco. that should last until noon your time until finally you'll see a little bit of sunshine pop back. where's the rain? basically coming back out of wisconsin, towards the u.p. we have been watching a line of showers develop right around i-70 between kansas city and st. louis. a couple of lightning strikes in there too. and salt lake city, some light rain showers but as that low begins to develop late tonight through tomorrow. watch the rain spread on through texas in towards oklahoma, back into kansas and nebraska, parts of colorado too. the yellow shape that you see right here, that's about two to three inches of rain it could get heavier to the east/southeast. but today pretty tranquil, good weather for you to travel tomorrow. >> so it could be a wet weekend in the east towards the south?

times a day? the senate is saying no, that is still way too much. the average fee is more than $30. they're saying in the senate proposal, just once a month or even maximum six times a year. they're also asking that you get a choice, so that if you're about to overdraw your account les say you're at the cash machine, a little something like a window would pop-up and say, hey, you're about to overdraw your account, you could and take the fee or cancel the transaction and not be hit by that. there are signs that people may be tired of being cheap. right, everybody's saving a lot of money not so much anymore. but maybe for christmas, there are some hints that the christmas shopping may not be so gloomy. consumer spending such a big part of the economy. economists say that people may be getting frugal fatigue, according to bloomberg. t.j. max and marshals say things

an eight-year-old crime. it is csi leech style. police in tasmania believe a leech helped them catch a violent burglar. a 71-year-old woman was beaten and robbed eight years ago. police found a blood-filled leech at the crime scene and extracted a dna sample recently. the dna sample matched a 54-year-old man arrested on drug charges. he pleaded guilty to the robbery yesterday. the leech case could bring mosquitos and spiders on to the crime-solving scene as well. they suck blood too. scientists made a massive discovery in space. what they found that dwarves our own solar system.

tonight" can tell you the cops also want to talk to a researcher who worked with richard heene and claims the amateur scientist is obsessed with two things -- getting famous and aliens. the researcher, robert thomas makes his claims in a story he sold to gawker.com. >> the incredible storm-chasing heenes of colorado. >> reporter: thomas says ever since the heene family appeared on the reality show "wife swap," richard heene has been obsessed with getting a reality show of his own. robert tells gawker that heene was cooking up a scheme to get attention for that proposed reality show a scheme that involved launching a mysterious balloon that the media would go nuts over. sound familiar? >> richard said, how much do you want to bet we could facilitate some sort of a media stunt that would be equally profound as that of roswell and we could do

so with nothing more than a weather balloon and some controversy. >> reporter: the researcher says that unlike the alleged hoax we saw last week, heene's proposal did not involve his kids. that alleged scheme unraveled when young falcon suggested on cnn's "larry king live" that the whole thing was an act. >> you guys said that we did this for a show. >> reporter: and now the future of those kids is becoming a big concern. >> we are hearing that children protective services are investigating the heene family, but, you know, police have assured us that know the kids are not going to be charged as criminals. >> reporter: but the heene's attorney tells "american morning," no one should be worried aworry ed ed about the windows. >> they seem to be happy, healthy, normal well-adjusted kids that seem to be insulated from this as well as possible. >> reporter: so if this family were indeed plotting to get famous, then they definitely succeeded beyond their wildest

dreams. but now the question becomes, how much will their newfound infamy cost them? this alleged balloon hoax really could cost the heenes dearly but how in the world could they have possibly pulled the wool over the eyes of so many people and why has the apparent stunt sparked so much outrage? joining me tonight from hollywood, hyla. here in new york, the fantastic jane velez-mitchell, host of hln hln's "issues with jane velez-mitchell" and author of this fabulous new book "i want," my journey from addiction and overconsumption to a simpler, honest life. jane, we have been working this tv thing for a long time. and i don't know about you but i for one have never seen nor could i have imagined one person going to such lengths and be so reckless for a hoax. what was your reaction when you heard the colorado sheriff say, yeah, their investigators believe we've all been duped by the heene family? >> well, ya think? i mean, a lot of us came to that conclusion as soon as we heard

the little boy had been found inside the home. very fishy, indeed. now it turns out that the sheriff's department, as early as friday, thought it was a hoax and they actually perpetrated a hoax on reporters saying that they believed the family because they wanted to gain the family's trust so that they could do an investigation over the weekend, which they did, interviewing them separately giving them polygraphs, going into the house and taking out computer equipment. and after all that, then they officially announced it is a hoax. the reason why people are outraged is because we all became emotionally invested. when i saw that saucer go up and i thought there was a little boy in there, my heart went out to him. as did everyone across the country, wondering, is it going to die because it's too cold is he going to fall out? so we became emotionally invested, and then we when found out it was a hoax we became extremely betrayed. there is a sense of betrayal and outrage that parent would use a

child and exploit a child this way. it is obscene. >> it's absolutely obscene. and it's obscene what officials did when we thought there was a 6-year-old boy as we say literally hanging in the balance. let me run through part of the massive effort by colorado officials for this alleged balloon hoax. denver international airport shut down two national guard helicopters, they were used, price tag, about $14,500. dozens of officials in two counties ended up chasing an empty balloon. and a wheat field got destroyed. an extraordinary ordeal. and hyla, not hard to understand why so many people are so ticked off about this. >> a lot of people are ticked off, understandably so. but at the same time i think a lot of people are also entertained. this is the number one topic on twitter, on facebook on morning show, radio shows. everyone's talking about this. everyone's fascinated by it. and i think people want more of this. >> well, twisted as it is, when you think about it, and the kind of world and culture we now live in, it's almost possible to understand that richard heene,

yeah he wanted his 15 minutes of fame, but what upset so many people including "the view" cohost sherri shepherd is that a 6-year-old boy was right there at the centerpiece of this bizarre plot. watch her. >> you know when makes me so upset, whoopi, is that there's a picture of where they thought the little boy -- do we have that -- fell out of that balloon. and i think everybody, i'm just speaking as a mother your heart just went out. people were praying for this family. people were shedding tears because they didn't know if this boy had died. >> yeah. people, as you said jane angry that the poor heene kids in addition to the fact that he was used for this plot alleged plot, was trotted out in front of cameras and apparently forceded to lie. jane what do you think should happen to the heene kids if the parents are charged and arrested in this thing? >> well a.j. what really got me was when this poor little boy threw up not once, but twice when he was being grilled about all this. imagine how conflicted he must feel wanting to be loyal to his mom and dad, and yet not wanting

to lie. what horrible values these parents, if this is, in fact a hoax are teaching these kids essentially tell them lie, pursue fame at all costs. nevertheless, i don't think that these kids should be victimized twice. i don't think they should be taken from their parents. they seem remarkably well adjusted, despite the fact that they have this very cooky, nutty professor, although i'm not a professor, father. so to take them out of the home forever, i think, would really turn this into a major league tragedy. what i think is they should prosecute the dad, not prosecute the mother, and have these children remain in the custody of the mother or some other family member. >> i have a feeling that the public at large will not feel satisfaction unless they throw the book at the dad if this does prove, as it looks like it's going to to be a hoax. hyla jane velez-mitchell i earn you not to go anywhere, because we are now saying, move over jon and kate sayonara, octomom, "showbiz tonight" dares to ask will the heene drama now

and law enforcement chiefs and county and municipalities that exist in all of the state of maryland. >> i know as a group i know there are several initiatives taking place. there is a new one. checkpoint strike force. >> yes it is a research based-multi-state situation where we pick and we go out there and we look for drivers that are impaired and work to get them off of the road and we do that through our sobriarity checkpoints and our saturation patrols. >> and so, which jerse - jurisdiction, one specific area or all of the jurisdictions now involved? >> all throughout maryland, the chiefs of police have signed on. every jurisdiction signed on in some way shape or form to participate in the checkpoint strike force. >> and so do you find that the

checkpoints are helpful in hopefully lowering traffic fatalities? >> absolutely. fatalities have been reduced 20 percent in the areas where we are doing the checkpoints . it proves to be extremely beneficial to us in many different ways. >> and do you find that the residents are supporting the checkpoints and do you have partner necessary this effort? >> yes we do. as you know, it is a powerful organization of mothers against drunk drivers. we work with them chosely in this endeavor and other organizations. their surveys indicate 85 to 90 percent of the people they talked to support the checkpoints. >> do you do these at specific times of year or are the checkpoints ongoing initiative. >> they are ongoing initiatives. they will be taking place every

week and everywhere and where you think that it is the best possible opportunity to deploy the work force and effective use knowledge of our people in this endeavor. >> as you are having the checkpoints and i know initially you are looking for impaired drivers but are you finding other things when you are pulling over the impaired drivers? >> oh, yes. people are very surprised what we run into on the checkpoints. the main focus is to get the impaired drivers that use alcohol off of the streets and identify them. but we are running into people who have warrants on them. their licenses are suspended some people have drugs in the vehicle this we were able to detect and find. there is a whole gamut of things and seat belt usage. it helps us with the seat belt

initiatives and child safety seat. we are able to make different observations and of course, we put a lot of emphasis on the seat belt usage and child safety seat as well >> i know some jurisdiction or most of the them there is zero tolerance if you don't have your seat belt on it is amazing that people are still driving without them. >> it is with the seat belt usage, if you are involved in an accident with the impaired drivers that use alcohol that gives you that much more of a chance to survive. >> how can citizens assist with the checkpoint strike force? >> we need them to be our eyes and ears out there. as with many thing necessary law enforcement and we ask citizens to do. if they see a person driving erratically or aggressively and feel they are under the influence of alcohol. pick up the cell phone and dial the number 911 or what ever it

the whole story. friday, of course, he said in a press conference, he believed the balloon family was telling the truth. and said well, we should believe them too. it turns out, that was all a part of the sheriff's ploy to get the truth out of the family. and of course everyone's jaws dropped when on sunday the sheriff revealed this whopper. >> it has been determined that this is a hoax that it was a publicity stunt. we believe that we have evidence at this point to indicate that it was a publicity stunt done with the hopes of marketing themselves or better marketing themselves for a reality television show at some point in the future. >> hyla, listen to that. even the sheriff added to the whole smoke and mirrors of this whole reality show drama right there. >> reality show writers go to school for years trying to come up with ways to make a show good. and richard heene did it. and i've got to disagree with wendy. the reality is i think people are going to rush to their televisions if these folks get a
