here's some stunning news. another man in a powerful position admitted to an affair with a younger assistant. i know. i was shocked, too. yep. okay. this time the cheater is espn analyst steve phillips. what makes this affair extra tabloid friendly his 22-year-old mistress has apparently watched "fatal attraction" one too many times. hide that rabbit, kids. joining me to talk about men and the ambitious younger women who love them are comedian nick depalo, lauren lake, attorney and author of "girl let me tell you" and the author of "divorce sucks," mary jo. he has an affair with a young woman. she breaks it off. she goes to his house.
9:31 pm
listen to the 911 call from his wife many. >> 911, what's your emergency? >> come to -- i have a crazy woman involved with my husband and she's come to my house to harm me and my children. >> okay, ma'am is she outside? >> she's pulling down my hill right now. she's in a blue prius. she just pulled past me. >> okay. so you're -- >> going down my driveway. it's a blue car. it's a blue sedan. >> okay. i'm sending officers right now. what's your name -- >> okay. it's a little scary, but isn't this what happens when you fool around with a 22-year-old girl and you're like, 30 years older than her or whatever he is? >> a real love story. >> a wacky environmentalist, she drives a prius. a left wing nut case. >> what is this guy thinking? >> she's very, very unattractive. >> how is that relevant? >> wait a minute. >> he's not thinking.
9:32 pm
>> it is interesting. it is interesting. that is a good point. his wife's a real babe. the 22-year-old -- i don't want to say anything derogatory, it's always interesting when you meet the other woman because she's not quite what you expect. >> never are. >> whoun it reminds me of? prince charles. he drops diana the beauty and goes with the -- horse face. >> the rottweiler -- >> the guys are not thinking. >> i'm quoting what -- >> i'm -- >> they're not thinking. >> it's a different part of the body. >> you get a little money, power, success, halfway decent looking. it's a recipe for infidelity in many cases. it's unfortunate. 22 years old. >> how unfortunate. >> i love this document. >> 22 years old? >> i love this argument from women. 22, she's so young. you guys don't drool over young guys. >> i married a young guy. my husband is ten years younger than me. it's not the point. >> i married a hot guy and he left me.
9:33 pm
i married a hot, young guy. i'm going for an old 90-year-old billionaire. >> emotional needs. >> thank you. >> she contacts this 16-year-old son, this crazy girl, on e-mail. she poses as a teenager when she does that. asks questions about the parents' relationship, and it's now being reported that she hired a stalker through craigslist to harass phillips' wife. >> you can wire stalkers? >> he didn't know the gun was loaded. >> i'm doing my own work. >> you're terrible. >> been hiding in bushes. >> you don't know what you're getting. >> look at this picture from "the new york post." look at the picture. have it? we will get it. there it is. he posed with her. he's a moron. >> clearly -- >> she's mentally a little off, right? >> the picture was not a setup. >> no. >> she definitely is two sandwiches short of the picnic. however, she was credible enough to get a job at his network. production assistant, but she
9:34 pm
was there as an intern. >> i think she's got a crush on jack black. >> i read you part of the letter. she writes i may be 22, but i'm not stupid. to top it off, steve has a big birthmark on his crotch -- >> that's not true. >> which part? how do you know that? a big birthmark on his crotch above his penis and one of his inner left thigh. you know i'm not being fake. >> that's disgusting. >> you know what's interesting about that? she did the whole letter. she said, i want to -- hi, it's just writing you, the wife, to let you know i'm having an affair with your husband. it's serious because we're not just having sex in parking lots. the last two kids is because he's guilty over bad affairs. in case you don't think we're talking about the same guy, let me describe his crotch. that's bizarre. >> that's how paula jones got clinton in trouble in the first place when he was the governor of arkansas. remember that? >> yeah. >> she identifies his genitalia and that led to the impeachment case.
9:35 pm
>> when will these men learn? >> written a letter, put it in the house. >> put him up -- >> thank you for saying my next statement. they're not going to learn. >> will you quit acting like we're wired the same, men and women? we're totally different. are we pigs and dogs or aren't we? >> the point is we are wired differently. i don't know what your beef is with me. i'll tell you my beef with men -- my beef with men who continually cheat but expect sometimes there's going to be a ramification. this girl is a nut case. granted, however, at the same time, when are you going to learn? i'm not talking about you -- >> one at a time please. >> okay. hold on a second. that argument just doesn't go. i'm sorry, it doesn't. men are pigs. i've had some experience. >> some men are pigs. present company excluded. you're a lovely man. i talked to you in the greenroom. you're lovely. listen, this woman is 22 years
9:36 pm
old. women going into the field, they like getting hooked up with powerful men. clearly she's mentally off. but you can't blame it on the men. these women are inclusive. >> you guys are missing my point completely. what i'm saying is that once you make the vow and you're married to someone -- i'm not yelling, i'm passionate. once you make the vow to someone and you're married, all i'm saying is don't you owe the duty and care to your wife to not cheat? that's my point. it's not about her being -- >> let him talk. >> can i ask a question? in the history of show business, has it never been a famous woman who cheated on her husband? where's that story? would you even cover it? we live in such an anti-male -- >> we're not doing that. >> i know. i'm making a nice argument. >> would you cover that story if it happened, joy? >> don't you think married men pay attention to this story? remember "fatal attraction?" >> we learned this stuff in high school. >> a lot of women say their husbands calmed down after they saw that movie. for good reason. >> here's the interesting thing about that movie.
9:37 pm
michael douglas had this hot wife -- >> the actor? >> in "fatal attraction." sorry about that. he had this perfect life and all of a sudden one weekend away up north, he's like i'm going to do you know here's an opportunity. i'm going to take it. he thought he could get away with it. >> the letterman case even jimmy kimmel is going out with someone on staff. he's not married so we're not getting too upset about him. letterman wasn't married when he was fooling around but he was in a very committed relationship for the past 23 years while he was doing it. what is it about men? why do they feel they can risk everything in their personal lives with their wives for a few minutes of nookky? >> you're insulting it's a risk. how do you know letterman didn't have -- how do you know the wife didn't cut a deal with letterman by saying, you know what, you
9:38 pm
can do whatever you want. some people do this. do whatever you want. if you're going to make $40 million a year and i can live like a queen i'll turn a blind eye to you. >> that's cynical. >> cynical, you're right. i just made that up. >> the interesting correlation to that is john edwards who is running for president. clearly he had an affair and probably an illegitimate child and thought he could pull it off. at the same time if you don't know who you're with -- >> let's hear from the men. i like to hear what is the motivation? >> it needs to be scratched. it's nothing to do with ego. it's stupid what he did. but men are risktakers. are we not? >> so it has nothing to do with ego at all? >> it's more risk than women. >> how come he gets so tipped off when the wife does it? the men go crazy when the wife is having an affair.
9:39 pm
which doesn't happen as often as men. >> who goes crazy? >> their egos are injured and -- >> men go crazy when -- when they're married and there's a custody suit and they lose their kids because all the laws benefit the wife in that situation. you can say -- >> men go crazy when women cheat all the time. >> it's a lie. >> it's absolutely not. how long were you marry? >> 6 or 22 years. one or the other. >> six years. but i've been with her for 15. >> 15 years. what if she was having an affair on the side? >> she would be doing me a favor at this point. no, i'm kidding. i'd say, look, don't put it on youtube. i don't know. >> you don't really care at this point? >> i do. of course it makes me nuts. >> well, you just agree with what you said we were -- come on, now. >> i have a feeling that you can't even imagine it happening. >> with my wife? it's baloney. i most certainly can.
9:40 pm
i picture it every night. >> she lives with him. she knows. but, listen, can i ask you a question, nick, you are the expert here. >> okay, we have to go. you can ask him off camera. thanks to my panel. by the way, the very funny nick depaulo will be at the improv october 29th through november 3rd. back with the legendary gore daval. what a show.
9:43 pm
9:44 pm
i've been an admirer of his for years, celebrated essayist, novelist, playwright, satirist. we don't have enough space on the prompter to fill in everything that this guy has done. he's "gore vidal" snapshots in history's glare. welcome to the show. pleasure to have you on the show. >> it's a joy to me, joy, to be on your show. >> now, i started with you wanted to kill somebody. you have anybody in mind right now? >> yes. of course i do. nobody present, may i say. >> nobody present. that's good. >> we have to get down to the district of columbia where i will go to work to cleanse the republic. >> so you don't want to name names? >> no, i won't name names. >> all right. let's talk about -- i'll name a couple of names. barack obama.
9:45 pm
>> i like him. >> mm-hmm. >> i wish he knew more about the united states. i was for hillary at the beginning on the grounds she knew how to be a president. having sort of done the job as a spouse. and and i realized that he's too intelligent for the job. >> obama is -- >> of course. we have the worst-educated population of any first-world country. and i hope you're listening and i hope you know that your lack of education is the joke of the world. it's not a very nice joke. >> you're talking to the americans now. >> the americans, yeah. >> do they make fun of us in italy where you lived for all those years? >> no, because italians are kind. >> i think you have a point. he's a little too smart for the country in a certain way. i mean after bush, i don't know if the country could take the shock of such a smart guy. >> they didn't. what happened was, for the first time the american people are
9:46 pm
people. we're listening on primetime to a president of the united states duly elected officially, anyway -- duly elected president who is speaking as one intelligent, well-educated man to his fellows. well, they never heard anyone like that. i'm a wartime president. you got that? i'm a wartime president. and he's marching along there. and let me tell you, if we don't fight them over here, we're going to have to fight them here. i'm all for fighting them right here at that moment, you know? but i couldn't jump into the screen fast enough to kill him off. that's one murder that i missed not committing. >> yeah, too late anyway. >> right. >> so you know obama, the other thing about him is he's always trying to be bipartisan. you know? >> it don't work.
9:47 pm
>> it's not working. >> no. and i think he realized it's not working. and feels like he's been president, you know, since mckinley. and i wish him well. and he comes up with nice ideas. i mean but his health care thing has me in knots. my brain is in knots. >> it does? >> when i think about it i don't know what it means. >> none of us understand it. it's to our credit we don't. we aren't working for the banks that got, whabts it $700 trillion or something? from the previous administration. which was, god, they were generous to a fault. >> they loved to give money to the rich in this country. >> the rich deserve the money. you see, if you're a really a good protestant -- i suspect you might be catholic -- but we
9:48 pm
protestant protestants firmly believe if you're a good person, you're rich. >> yes. >> if you're a poor person, you're poor. >> and you deserve to be -- >> otherwise, god wouldn't have made you that way. >> that's right. that's calvinism. >> oh, honey, i knew you'd drop his name. are you still dating him? >> no. he -- he wasn't that good in bed. >> well, i don't know, everybody swore by him in washington in the old days. but it's the new regime now. >> last night at the "y" -- or the night before, wherever it was, it was interesting. we were talking about comedy. you're very funny and you're a satirist. and i'm in the comedy business myself even though you can't tell from this interview. >> i can tell. >> yeah, you said something interesting. you said comedy is cruel. now, that would make dick cheney funny. and he's not. >> come on. vice president of the united
9:49 pm
states, a working sadist who is trying to get more prisons to lock up people to give them the water treatment? i mean, come on. i can't think of any higher comedy that we've had. >> yeah, that's a riot, all right. >> wowy. that's about as funny as it gets, you know? >> so, that's -- the other thing i want to ask you, so many things, i could just stay here all day. but you -- you have a longtime partner, howard -- >> mm-hmm. >> i read you said the secret to the success of the relationship was no sex. >> of course. >> ever. >> i thought that was clear. >> no i wasn't sure if it just petered out like everybody -- >> no, we were virgins. >> that's interesting. that's a platonic relationship, no? >> i never knew what plato was up to. we only have his word for it. >> so that's interesting because -- so you were able to
9:50 pm
really stay together because there was none of that sexual jealousy going on, i guess? none of that. >> imagine being jealous of anybody over sex. >> it happens all the time. >> i know it does. which reminds you if you go out in the street grab something passing by. you're as well off as you were up there looking out. >> that's a good point. i presume from that you're not interested in gay marriage in any way? it doesn't interest you? any more than straight marriage? >> both put me to sleep. >> okay. we'll have more with refreshingly and brutally candid gore vidal coming up. >> i don't think the novel is our tradition anymore. i think our tradition has shifted in my lifetime, we're at the certainty stage, novel risks, po et have been pushed out.
9:51 pm
9:54 pm
people in the united states happen to believe the united states policy is wrong in vietnam and viet kong are correct in wanting to organize their own way politically. this happens to be pretty much the opinion of western europe and other parts of the world. if it's novelty in chicago, that's too bad. i assume for the point of american democracy -- shut up a minute. >> no, i won't. >> the answer is they were well treated by people who of the ra sized them and i'm for of the ra sizing those who egg on american marines to shoot them. i know you don't care. >> the only person i can think of is yourself, failing that -- >> now listen, you -- stop calling me --
9:55 pm
>> let's stop calling names, [ bleep ]. >> you'll stay plastered. >> so you got along nicely with him? >> he was all girl. >> you know after he died, i love -- you said hell was bound to be a livelier place if he joins forever those he serves in life applauding their prejudices and fanning their hatred. you just didn't like this guy, did you? >> no, i didn't. >> before we go, i loved the book. it's beautiful. everyone should go out and buy the book. it has beautiful pictures of you and your family and mother whom i read that you really loved your mother. >> just an adorable person, yeah. when i saw that little boy, the one in the balloon, no, i will not talk about it, but the balloon boy.
9:56 pm
he's giving an interview afterwards and he can't stop throwing up. >> i know. >> i was like that -- not at 6, but at 10 years old -- because every time i had -- my mother was a mad woman and she was raging all the time, happily, she was drunk most the time. and i can remember every time i had to say something to her, which was not very often if i could help it, i'd start vomiting. >> really? >> yes. if she were a modern mother, she might have said, there's something wrong here. >> but she didn't? >> no, she changed the cook. who was actually quite good. >> there's one more quote i want to run by you. this is something that i read a long time ago, from da vinci. it always sort of keeps me thinking, maybe it won't be so bad after i'm dead because he says, a well-spent day, just as
9:57 pm
a well-spent day -- you might know this quote -- brings a happy sleep, so a well-spent life brings a happy death. i thought, what a great thing to believe. do you believe that? >> well, we have an old italian expression for it in italy. it means he's just whistling dixie. >> so much for the great da vinci. okay. >> linney. >> linney he was something. thanks for doing this with me. i actually interviewed you years ago on the radio. you told me last night i looked different on the radio. that was good. >> superb when you were there. >> thank you. okay. thanks to everybody for joining me tonight and thank you for watching, everybody. good night, and good luck. who said that? >> edward r. murrow.
10:00 pm
breaking news tonight. live, colorado. the whole country on pins and needles. a little 6-year-old boy's life hanging in the balance and a beautiful silver space-like balloon soaring through the clouds. tonight, it apparently all ends in felony charges. police, sheriffs, national guard, volunteers, the faa, even a whole airport and commercial carriers trying to save the life of a 6-year-old boy. falcon heene. who his brothers and his parents say is trapped inside that homemade balloon, racing through the sky. eyewitness reports something or someone falls thousands of feet to rough terrain near the colorado rocky mountains. after 60 miles of terror, the
10:01 pm
balloon lands. no boy. was he dead? was he injured? was he lying down some ravine with every bone in his body broken? no. he was hiding hiding in the family attic the whole time. blurting out on national tv, it was all, quote, for the show. on not one but two morning shows, that same child so nervous he vomits. when asked the same question. bombshell tonight. just released, distraught, seemingly heartbreaking 911 calls from the boy's father and mother. both breaking down over their 6-year-old son's life threatened. but was the stunt in the works for months? with us live, heene's former colleague, who may have the answers. and tonight, more disturbing news about the three little boys' home environment.
10:02 pm
in addition to an alleged domestic abuse 911 call to the home, the three little boys, ages 6, 8, and 10, appear on youtube. in a rap song allegedly their dad wrote and taught them, full of filthy language. the title is so shocking. we're disallowed from saying it on the air. but you can hear the children spewing it out. age 6, 8, and 10 on youtube. under the direction of their father. looks like bye-bye, reality show. hello, cell block.
10:04 pm
>> the first thing that came to my mind was who would possibly do something like this? it has to be richard heene. so when i actually saw this on tv, you know, i didn't realize how serious this was until later on in the day. i was actually helping my friends move. as the news stories progress and the buzz sort of built and watching falcon actually say on tv, well, we did this for the show that's when all of my questions were answered. and tonight, satsuma, florida. a 5-year-old little girl tucked into bed. five hours later, she's gone. vanished. daddy comes home from the nightshift to find not a trace of little haleigh. the last person to see the 5-year-old alive that night, new stepmother misty croslin. just hours after croslin
10:05 pm
handcuffed by cops on alleged road rage, she flies to new york taking to the air to declare she's innocent. even in that one brief interview, she can't keep her story straight. first claiming she knows nothing about haleigh's whereabouts, then blurting out the other side of the family took haleigh. then a 180 on the failed lie detector, claiming she passed, then admitting she failed. after her brother tells cops he was at the home that night, no sign of croslin, completely debunking her story, her own mother saying croslin's not coming clean. croslin's tv response? they betrayed me. they're the bad guys. look at them, not me. minutes after that debacle on national tv, her lawyer dumps her. breaking tonight, croslin back at police headquarters. but this time she claims she's the victim, claiming she was robbed at gunpoint. but did the alleged robbery go down in the middle of a drug deal?
10:06 pm
was croslin scoring dope? if so, what does it mean in the search for haleigh? this as we learn croslin's mom is interrogated by police about her daughter's involvement in haleigh's disappearance. what does she reveal? >> breaking news. the ex-wife of ronald cummings, the last known person to see haleigh alive, misty croslin, has been robbed while she and friends were allegedly trying to buy illegal drugs. police say misty and two friends were robbed by two or three men outside an apartment complex. >> you have made an accusation that croslin was on a drug binge.
10:07 pm
do you have any evidence to support that claim? >> no, i don't. >> then why did you say it? >> it was just a thought. i mean, maybe she was. maybe she wasn't. >> cops say at first they were told the women were there to visit friends but learned they were actually there to score drugs. police didn't know what type of drugs they were allegedly trying to buy. >> what does it say about her and who she is willing to betray? is she betraying ron? is she betraying haleigh? >> mr. cummings, i can say that tonight for the first time, i don't believe you. i think you do suspect your ex-wife, soon to be ex-wife's story. >> his main concern is finding his daughter. he don't care who it implicates. >> this, as misty's father, tells journalist art harris there's no way misty hurt haleigh. >> are you saying you didn't fail the polygraph like people and law enforcement are kind of claiming you did? >> no, i did not. >> okay. so bottom line, you don't know where haleigh is? >> bottom line.
10:08 pm
good evening. i'm nancy grace. i want to thank you for being with us. live, colorado, the whole country on pins and needles. a little 6-year-old boy's life hanging in the balance and a beautiful silver space-like balloon soaring through the clouds. tonight, more of the stunning 911 calls from mommy and daddy and, tonight, surfacing on youtube, a profanity-laced rap song. these three little boys apparently learned at home. what does that say about their home environment and what do these 911 calls prove?
10:10 pm
10:12 pm
>> you are seeing, we are seeing the rap song that the heenes thought was okay to put on youtube, a song they wrote and produced their children to sing. we have bleeped out most of what we could understand of the profanities. i can't even say the name of the song. it is a sexual slur on women, is the name of the song they have taught these children to sing. 6 years old, 8 years old, 10 years old. the "f" word, the "s" word, calling gay men faggots up trees is in this song. okay. let's get back to the whole balloon stunt. out to sarah hansen senior
10:13 pm
content editor with "the coloradan." thank you for being with us sarah. what is the latest? >> the latest is we are waiting for next week when the sheriff office investigators and the larimer county attorney's office will meet to discuss possible charges. >> and to mary margaret. senior news editor radaronline.com. what more can you tell me? what do we know about the proof prosecuteors may have to show this whole thing was a stunt? and that heartbreaking 911 call was nothing more than a performance? momny included. >> we do know that the heenes have had a long history with playing up for the cameras. the parents met in an acting studio in los angeles and this is something they've reared their children to do. investigators were tipped off after they saw the family on cnn when little falcon slipped up and said oh, i thought this was for the cameras. that's really what tipped them off and made them realize this
10:14 pm
was all for show. >> tonight, more stunning excerpts from that 911 call. it breaks your heart to hear mommy and daddy breaking down in tears, seemingly unable to breathe the mom at one point. with me right now, a very special guest joining me from new york. robert thomas. this is heene's former researcher. mr. thomas, thank you for being with us. >> thanks for having me. >> you know, mr. thomas as a hardened felony prosecutor, i put people behind bars on rape, murder, child molestation, dope trafficking, arson. i was thinking, this was a stunt. do they really need to go to jail? now that i'm hearing about a prior 911 domestic abuse and this rap song using the children has surfaced, i want to talk to you about how far you believe mr. heene would go? was this all a stunt with the balloon? using his boys? >> i, personally, believe that it was a stunt. my perspective isn't just based on the media.
10:19 pm
how many legitimate 911 calls came in that day? how many people needed police, needed sheriffs, needed help? but no, everybody was consumed trying to save this 6-year-old boy's life up in a balloon. he was never there. back to robert thomas, a special guest joining us out of new york. mr. heene's former researcher. robert, thank you for being with us. you state that at first your mind was open, then you came to believe pretty quickly that this was all just a stunt. tell me why. what do you know? what have you told police?
10:20 pm
>> well, i first met richard back in march. i have a few renewable energy projects that i'm working on and a website called extrapedia.org that is designed to bring people together with technological ideas to benefit humanity. i saw richard heene's science detective series and immediately thought, this is a great opportunity to collaborate with somebody. i was kind of shocked, you know, to see how things would transition after that point. you know, as the months progressed and i worked for him doing various activities, things just got weirder and weirder and obviously i guess they culminated to a point when this event took place.
