well hello hello, hello! welcome to our show on a monday. morning, sunshine. i'm robin meade. here's what's going on. over the weekend people stood in long lines -- maybe you were among them -- to get the h1n1 vaccine. well, now the epidemic is being called a national emergency. you're going to hear why this makes a huge difference in the front lines of the battle against the disease. the man that you see there was one of the pilots on that plane that overshot its destination. well, now he's giving us some idea about what happened in the cockpit. a woman in dallas got a ticket for not speaking english? she's not the only one and now the city's police chief is promising an investigation. there was a fine and everything. all right our top story -- new preparations for an h1n1 pandemic. that's after president obama declared a national emergency.

his order on friday night gives doctors and hospitals the okay to cut through government red tape so they can act quickly if things get worse. already, over 1,000 people in the united states have died from the h1n1. >> i think the government is doing everything they possibly can and the centers for disease control. >> i think they're making every move possible. i think it's a better indication that this is a monumental challenge, and the monumental challenge is being met. >> well, there still are not enough doses of the h1n1 vaccine for everyone who wants one. so, correspondent richard lui's going to explain why that is and has new details on a new treatment for you in about ten minutes from now. new this morning at least 14 americans have died in two helicopter crashes in afghanistan. nato says that one chopper went down in northwestern afghanistan, killing ten americans, both servicemembers and civilians and two other

helicopters collided in southern afghanistan. four u.s. troops were killed in that crash. nato says that it does not believe that enemy fire was involved. for the first time, we're hearing from a crewmember on the northwest airlines jet that overshot the minneapolis airport by 150 miles last week. >> nobody was asleep in the cockpit and no arguments took place, but other than that, i cannot tell you anything that went on because we're having hearings this weekend, we're having hearings on tuesday. all that information will come out then. >> all righty. for more than an hour, though, air traffic controllers couldn't reach them during wednesday's flight. senior white house officials were closely monitoring the situation. the ntsb interviewed the pilot and co-pilot yesterday. it may interview flight attendants today. but police met that plane after it landed safely. they asked the flight attendants to keep the passengers in their seats while they checked out who was actually in the cockpit. also under review a possible delay by the faa in notifying

the military about this. norad did scramble fighter jets at two locations, but they never took off. northwest airlines says that it is cooperating and is doing its own investigation. people have given more than 1,000 tips to detectives searching for the killer of a little girl. florida authorities say they still don't know what happened to 7-year-old somer thompson on her way home last week. over the weekend, neighbors raised more than $18,000 so somer's mom doesn't have to go back to work right away. >> if it were me i don't see how she could go back to work so soon. she has bills to pay, she has a car payment. she has other children to take care of. >> we had to show our support here, me and my family. >> we all have children and we can all relate and we're all hurting for the thompson family and we just want them to know that we love them and we're praying for them. >> somer's body was found in a landfill in georgia on wednesday. there is a public visitation tonight and a memorial service

tomorrow in orange park, florida. the burial and reception tomorrow are private. a wildfire is forcing about 85 people to evacuate their homes. strong winds and dry weather near santa cruz california are making things difficult for the firefighters. the fire's already burned 600 acres and is only about 20% contained. authorities do not know what started that fire. new this morning, an 18-year-old woman who turned up in new york city two weeks ago with amnesia -- didn't know who she was -- has now been identified. her name is casey alise peterson. her father's on his way from washington state to pick her up. he says it's not the first time that casey's disappeared and lost her memory, and he says their relationship has been difficult. i know you're in a hurry but come here and look at this. this patrol car in washington state got hung up on a wire from a power pole. hung up on a wire. witnesses say that another car hit him and rammed him into the pole. the power lines were snapped and

almost beat the saints yesterday, so close. 88 degrees. that's the high temperature for you today. a couple showers a couple thunderstorms, still feeling like summertime down there with a high close to 90. so miami enjoy that. beautiful shot. what about the bad weather? it's right across texas and it's really beginning to come down outside of houston through san antonio and austin, too. look at that squall line racing out ahead of a cold front. here is louisiana. this is the shreveport radar. most of the air dry around northern louisiana. west, though you can see what's coming right down the pike right down 20 this heavy shield of rain moving in towards your direction. two to three inches of rain today. flash flood watches are posted for you guys. san antonio radar, you can see a lot of rain just to the north of the city and then stretching close in towards houston. you're going to get the thunderstorms here today and that's going to go all the way down the coast to brownsville by later this afternoon. up north a little bit farther, little rock is dry rain just off towards your west beginning to fall apart a bit but that rain will steadily fill in later today. so the flash flood watches are posted. warnings are out there, too. the warnings are in bright shaded green. this flash flood warning also in red just north of houston, as

his wife says the kids are trying hard to stay strong but of course they miss their daddy. maybe you have somebody in the service. what a cute family. go to cnn.com/robin. we'll help you salute them. president obama declared a federal emergency, trying to stay one step ahead of the h1n1 flu virus, but thousands of people who want to protect themselves from the flu cannot even get the vaccine. correspondent richard lui, what is the deal here? there's a holdup. >> robin, scientists make the vaccine by growing a weakened virus in eggs, and it just has not been growing as fast as experts had wanted. >> we are nowhere near where we thought we'd be by now. we're not near where the vaccine manufacturers predicted we would be. >> now over the summer the government estimated about 100 million doses would be ready by now, but only about 11 million have been shipped to doctors and hospitals so far. the new estimate is to have 50 million doses by mid-november robin, and then 150 million in december. >> well the government says

that millions of people have already come down with this type of flu and they've just okayed a new drug to treat it. so, this won't protect you from it, but once you get it what's it supposed to do for you? >> slow it down. it's peramavere and it's an iv drug, so you have to be hospitalized with the virus. for example, if you're on a respirator and can't use the pills or nasal spray or are not responding to the drugs already out there. this clearance does not mean the drug is fda-approved but they say it has worked for some people with few complications. >> thanks. by the way, we're taking your questions and your concerns. what are your thoughts when you hear this story? you can comment on our facebook page. you can go to cnn.com/robin. a friend of convicted swindler bernie madoff was found dead in a swimming pool. jeffry picower's wife found him yesterday at their mansion in palm beach florida. investors accused him of getting about $7 billion in bogus profits from madoff's scheme. his attorney says that pick your

had parkinson's disease and other health issues. police are investigating his death as a drowning but not ruling anything out. more than 160 people were killed in the bloodiest attacks in baghdad in more than two years. wow. at least 540 people were hurt yesterday when two suicide car bombs targeted government buildings. president obama called the attacks outrageous but iraq's prime minister said that the bombings would not derail the elections in january. he promised to punish those responsible. some people are seeing clearly for the first time in years. you're going to meet a doctor who did free eye surgeries for people in need and it may help some of them find work again. all new for you in about 40 minutes. listen, if you are the parent of a baby, you can get your money back, apparently, for the baby einstein videos. i mean, there was one estimate that like one out of three parents had them, and then you know maybe your kid didn't turn into einstein. so, this is a fight that's been going on for years between the makers of the videos and a group called the campaign for a commercial-free childhood. basically, in the past, the box seemed to hint that the tapes could make babies smarter when in fact, there's research that points to trouble for babies who watch tv. the bottom line the american academy of pediatrics says no tv if baby is from 0 to 2 years old. we've got the refund info. it's all up now on our website cnn.com/robin. go it "looking out for you." by the way since you don't need a receipt you could probably pick a few up in a thrift store, send them in and get the money. i didn't say that i think you could. all right. companies expect to hire and invest more in the next six months in the united states. that is some good news in a bad economy. this is a new survey by the national association for

business economics. basically, we're talking about economists who work for companies, not the kinds at colleges just in theory. and 24% say, hey, these are the guys who whisper into the ceo's ear, and they say maybe we'll have some hiring. so maybe the worst employment slump since the great depression is starting to come to an end. the economy, of course, has lost more than 7 million jobs since this recession started, and we know that unemployment has been closing in on 10%, but maybe we're getting near the end of that trend. all right it's monday morning. maybe you're traveling this morning. find out if you need your umbrella or if you're going to get there on time. let's go to bob van dillen. >> hey what's up jennifer? it's texas right now getting slammed. heavy rain pulling out of dallas in towards the houston metro. let me show you what it looks like on saber flight explorer. i've zeroed into the area. here is dfw dallas/ft. worth airport, the big one. get in towards the galveston/houston area, you can see a couple showers and thunderstorms popping up. so far, no delays but we have a

♪ new this morning, the fda is letting you buy drugs that you think are helping you fight deadly diseases but may not actually be. the "associated press" says it obtained a new report from the government accountability office which lists several drugs that were part of a quick approval process, but in follow-up tests didn't live up to their promise or tests weren't even done.

the fda says that it does not plan to pull any of them off of the market. it says that this quick approval process helps people with serious diseases get the drugs faster, and in some cases taking the drugs away would eliminate the only available treatment for people. a texas woman got a traffic ticket -- get this -- because she could not speak english. she was also cited last week for making an illegal u-turn and not having her driver's license. but now she wants a deeper investigation and a bigger apology from the dallas police. now, the woman, who is a legal resident in the united states plans to file a complaint this week. >> i basically told my mom that she had gotten a ticket for not speaking english. she was worried that now every time she drives and she gets pulled over is she going to get another ticket for not speaking english. >> well, the dallas police chief apologized for the ticket. he says that at least 38 other drivers got those tickets, and

the officers who issued them will be investigated. a ticket for not speaking english. all right, what could you do with $200 million? oh, the thought. well, the new york yankees are hoping that it gets them a world series ring. hi, rafer. >> good morning, robin. and they're a little bit closer. and that $200 million payroll, that's the reason that they've been called the evil empire. and they're hated by non-yankee fans. all right, the most expensive team in america is going to the world series. and interestingly, at exactly 1: 12:01 eastern, they defeated the angels, whose payroll is almost half of new york's. but a-rod goes from a steroids scandal to leading his team in the playoffs. now the yanks get the phillies in the classic. game one in the bronx on wednesday. and it's been a few tough years for the new orleans saints -- for the whole city of new orleans, i should say but they are celebrating in the big easy as the saints went marching

peterson's father says that it is not the first time that she's disappeared and lost her memory. he says she's been living with a friend since her mother died. it could be months before i-40 reopens near the tennessee/north carolina border. it was hit with a massive rockslide over the weekend. troopers say some of the rocks are the side of a house. traffic is being detoured. the cleanup has already started, but it's expected to take several months to complete. and those are some of the headlines that we're following this morning. right now, just checking on you. time for you to rise and shine. i'm robin meade. our top story, back to this -- a federal emergency declaration to deal with the h1n1 outbreak. correspondent richard lui joins us now. so, now they're saying it's a national emergency. that sounds very serious. what does it actually mean? >> it might actually come down to an egg here robin. the idea is to let government researchers bypass the government's red tape with a surge of patients. if there's a large outbreak, your local hospital has set up emergency clinics or schools or

tents to treat flu patients. normally, that requires a lot of paperwork. the declaration also makes it easier to transfer patients from one hospital to another. >> you know what we're also taking our viewers' comments and your questions about this h1n1 virus and the emergency declaration. on our facebook page sunnyj wrote -- "who should be worried and who should get vaccinated?" very simple question there. do we have a good area? richard lui worked on that. >> robin the cdc is recommending the h1n1 vaccine for health care workers, pregnant women people who care for infants and people 6 months to 24 years of age, but they also say people of any age should get it if they have medical conditions like asthma heart disease or diabetes. we've also added a listening robin, with all the details to cnn.com/robin. >> i think one of the notable things this year is that young people all the way up to age 24 are being urged to get the vaccine. richard, thank you. a church janitor is accused of stabbing a priest 32 times with a kitchen knife. new jersey authorities say that jose feliciano killed reverend

ed hinds at the church after an argument on thursday. investigators are investigating several possible motives. more than 150 people gathered for mass yesterday to pray for both reverend hinds and the suspect. >> we're all praying for ourselves so we can get through this. we're just hugging each other and just coming together as a family. >> i really can't get over it. it will be a while take us a while to get over things because we're, you know it just came so fast. couldn't believe it. >> well the suspect worked at the church for 17 years. a prosecutor says that investigators found the priest's cell phone bloody clothing and towels at the suspect's home and in a park across the street. students from a college in st. louis have filed complaints of racism against a nightclub in chicago. nearly 200 students were on a class trip and every african-american was refused admission. they say they were told that they didn't meet the dress code because their pants were too

baggy. so, that's when the students cooked up an experiment. >> he's actually wearing my pants. he actually -- later on he went back to the hotel, we did a switch of pants and he put my pants on. keep in mind this guy is about three inches shorter than me and probably close to 40 or 50 pounds lighter than me, but he went back to the bar later on that evening with the same manager, same bouncer at the door and was able to just walk in, while actually making jokes with the bouncer about not paying for the people behind him. >> so a spokesperson for the original mother's bar tells the "chicago tribune" that the club is taking the issue very seriously and is doing an internal investigation. washington university will hold a town hall meeting tonight to talk about that incident. the white house scored one for gender equality in sports yesterday. here's rafer with more on who's playing golf with the president. >> and what access huh, robin? >> yeah. >> for the first time the president golfed with a woman while in office. now he is a regular on the links, but until sundays, it had only been with men at least

while he was in office. well, chief domestic policy adviser melanie barnes joined mr. obama along with marvin nicholson, the white house trip director and a doctor from the university of chicago medical center. the foursome played a round on the army's ft. belvoir golf course. president obama had recently been criticized by "the new york times" for playing basketball only with men. robin? >> all right. yeah, it is primo access to the president. the balloon boy incident may have been a hoax that richard heene had been working on for a while. his former researcher says what we all saw on tv was almost exactly an idea that heene had for a reality tv show. >> there are 52 in this particular proposal. so one episode idea per week. and number 16 of it basically said let's create a fake flying saucer and facilitate a global media hoax with some controversy. it will be a great way to get the heene family's name, you know nationwide and around the world in the media, and it will

be a great way to raise awareness about the ufo phenomenon, about the heene family, the reality show. >> wow. in court documents out friday, investigators say that heene's wife mayumi admitted that she and her husband knew their 6-year-old son was hiding the entire time. the parents are facing several charges, but publicly they said that it was not a hoax. somebody's got to go as the entire heene family for halloween. >> yeah, right. i really don't care for that whole story. it makes me angry. >> i know. i know it does. because, you know why a lot of us i think are angry? not only because there are allegations that it was a hoax, but because we were all invested emotionally in that story. >> absolutely. >> worried about the child. >> hoping if the kid was out there bouncing around he would land safely. and they knew he wasn't there in the first place. i don't care for that kind of thing. show you what's happening. this weather brought to you by tylenol. feel better. so, what's going on around the region? it's a heavy rain day once again

eastern texas northern sections of louisiana. you can see the shreveport radar picking up scattered showers over you now with thunderstorm acre action just to your west along i-20. it's headed in your direction ahead of a cold front, currently right over dallas. look at san antonio, as the cold front arched back off towards the west, draws moisture in your direction. so, you have rain and thunderstorms over san antonio. all these lightning strikes realtime. so we're picking that up for you. and it's been active. no severe thunderstorm warnings right now. obviously some good news. i don't think it's a real severe weather day because it won't be unstable enough, but the heavy rain is out there. i am looking at this one bowed section near college station. lots of heavy wind when you start seeing that. so we'll see fast-moving winds very quickly, headed towards i-45. up farther, you can see light showers just off to your west, stretches out over northern arkansas. flash flood warnings and watches. the warns in red right there, that's what you're looking at.

out towards the atlantic coastline, we have one weak area of low pressure off the coast of the carolinas, but another one generating light rain to the outer banks, spilling into charleston and toward the georgia coast later today, but it won't be that bad. let's show you the tower cams we're working on because showers and thunderstorms will be a factor if you're traveling in towards the southern part of florida. here's what it looks like. looking at a decent one. also looking at miami, the high today near 90. still feeling like summertime. no cold front in your direction. it's going to be humid it's going to be hot. you'll see showers and thunderstorms developing later today. more details on that coming up in just about a half hour. >> all right. you know it took firefighters all weekend to get this huge fuel storage fire under control. it looks like they finally got it out, but now the fbi is involved. also ahead get ready for rallies. what a big political tour hopes to accomplish in the next two weeks.

♪ you can't feel it, you can't feel it ♪ many children in the united states apparently are not getting enough vitamin d. something to think about as you're putting the breakfast in front of them right now. a study in the journal pediatrics says that at least one in five kids is at risk of having weak bones and other problems because of lack of vitamin d. now, it says that almost 90% of african-american children that age and 80% of latino kids could be vitamin d deficient. this study looks at kids ages 1 to 11. you know let's talk about a milestone, and unfortunately, it's not the good kind.

seven more banks went under this weekend, meaning more than 100 banks have failed so far this year. bank failure makes me think of my money. how about you? jennifer westhoven is looking out for you. do we need to be concerned about our money right now? >> you still don't. that's the same story. we've talked about fdic insurance up to $250,000. the government's transferred them to a different bank over the weekend. so your atm card all that should work fine. no fees there. you shouldn't have any problem. but the headline is more than 100 banks have failed and the number keeps on climbing. so, that's the most since 1992. there were three failures in florida, one each in georgia wisconsin, minnesota and illinois on friday. and i think because they're small banks, you know maybe it hasn't happened to you. maybe it hasn't happened in your neighborhood, but it could, and it's really just part of the aftermath of the financial crisis, all those bad loans out there. gas prices 13 days in a row now where every morning you are seeing them higher.

the average price now about $2.67 a gallon according to aaa. that is up almost 18 cents in the past two weeks. so, no matter where you live you may be paying more or less but you've probably seen them climb, and it's because oil prices have shot up. and here's a little bit of good news to maybe take the sting out of that. if you're driving past a kfc today, you can stop in and they'll give you free grilled chicken. they tried this last time. >> say that again? did you say free? hello! >> free chicken. but i'll tell you they tried this last time and a lot of people were upset because by the time they got there, the chicken was gone. so, they were giving out coupons, but people were like hey, i didn't eat lunch and i stood in this darn line. this time, they say they are ready. >> okay, so they're -- >> no coupons. >> so it's the same thing you do it again and people get the chicken for free. and it's so you can taste their new grilled chicken. >> this is their third promo. that makes me wonder how that's doing.

a huge fire at a fuel storage facility is finally out. firefighters in puerto rico have been taking it on since friday, and they're still having to keep watch to make sure that it doesn't flare up again. it started with an explosion with the force of a 2.8 earthquake. hundreds of people were forced to evacuate. the fbi is investigating graffiti found on two tunnels that refer to the fire. the tea party express is back on the road. the conservative tour is holding rallies in 38 cities over 19 days. participants say that they're protesting government programs that they say cost too much and take too much control out of people's hands. >> we need to get back to the days when we were responsible and we assumed the responsibility of ourselves and our families and the government is not a part of my daily life.

i really resent the government taking up so much of my time that i'm down here having to protest right now. >> meanwhile, antitea party protestors held their own rally in los angeles. one protestor there says that she came out to show her support for a government-paid health care option. the tea party express stops in bakersfield and fresno california today. a child ran into a gas station saying that he and his mom had been kidnapped. she was still outside in the car held hostage, he said. well, the security guard who was in the store said the boy had managed to slip away. >> he noticed my badge and he told me he was being hostage -- held hostage by a man in this black truck. >> wow. so, the guard called the police. they say that they may charge the man with kidnapping and they say that he has a long rap sheet. the friends and family of connecticut football player are

gathering today in his hometown of miami for his funeral. how awful. rafer. >> yeah, robin, it's been an extremely emotional week for jasper howard's teammates and they're going to be capping it off with his funeral. they honored howard for saturday's game against west virginia, as one teammate actually carried howard's number 6 jersey and another his helmet, and the team held hands and bowed their heads in howard's honor. both teams actually wore a number 6 on their helmets. uconn would lose the game but it was a darn exciting game. meanwhile, sunday was the showing of howard's remains in miami for. for the funeral today, the team plans to travel to miami. in the nfl, the houston/49ers game. a couple of your parachuting buddies there. actually, one of them. george h.w. bush and his son george jr. and before the game -- >> the army's golden knights. >> the golden knight paratroopers came flying in three young women. robin, we didn't see you on sunday. is this where you were? >> no. >> is that you parachuting in? no. houston would win it 24-21. jets quarterback mark sanchez was literally hot

a senior aide to senate majority leader harry reid says a final decision will be made today and that reid is ready to sbroo deuce a bill with a public help insurance option allowing states to opt out. senators from both parties sounded off. >> the only real way or one of the best real ways to bring costs down is a new entity competing. the insurance company industry will not do it on its own. and the one other thing i'd say, and this is really important you're not required to take the government option. it's not a government plan being forced on people. that was the rhetoric in august. it's an option. >> we had the first vote in the health care debate last week. and there was a bipartisan majority, 100% of republicans and 13 democrats agreeing that we should not borrow a quarter of a trillion dollars at the outset. in other words, not send a bill to our grandchild and the very first bill to the health care debate. we'll see how it unfolds. >> a public option was considered virtually dead just a few weeks ago.

the ntsb interviewed the pilot and co-pilot from the northwest airlines jet that overshot the minneapolis airport by 150 miles last week. for more than an hour air traffic controllers could not reach them during the flight. senior white house officials were even closely monitoring this. this weekend the co-pilot said they did not fall asleep and they weren't arguing. the ntsb may interview flight attendants today. police met the plane after it landed safely and asked the flight attendants to keep passengers in their seats while they checked who actually was in the cockpit. also under review a possible delay by the faa in notifying the military about it. northwest airlines says it is cooperating and doing its own investigation. new this morning, an 18-year-old woman who turned up in new york city two weeks ago with amnesia has now been identified. her name is kacie peterson. her father says it's not the

federal emergency to deal with the h1n1 outbreak. correspondent richard lui joins us now. when you say federal emergency when it comes to the flu outbreak, it sounds serious. >> the idea is to let doctors bypass the government's red tape in case they get a surge of h1n1 patients. for example, if there was a large outbreak near you, you could set up -- it makes it easier to transport patients from one hospital to another on top of that. >> it's all about eliminating red tape so when the vaccine does come in, you can get it. we're taking people's questions, concerns and thoughts. for example, michael g. wrote on our facebook page i'm still concerned about the side effects of this vaccine. what are the risks? we sent richard off to contact the medical unit. >> we dug into it.

new this morning, the fda is let ing youbuy drugs that you think are helping you fight deadly diseases but may not actually be. the associated press says it obtain add new report from the government accountability office which lists several drugs that were part of a quick approval process but that in follow-up tests didn't live up to their promise or tests weren't done. the fda says it does not plan to pull any of those off the market. it says in some cases taking those drugs away would eliminate the only available treatment for people with serious illnesses. the balloon boy incident may have been a hoax that richard heene had been working on for a while. heene's former researcher says that what we all saw on tv was almost exactly an idea that heene had for a reality tv show. >> there are 52 in this particular proposal. so one episode idea per week. number 16 of it basically said let's create a fake flying saucer and facilitate a global
