good morning. so you're waking up you look in the mirror and your hair is making you crabby. it had a party after you wept to bed or something. i'm robin meade. the northwest pilots whose plane overshot its destination say they were working on their laptops, what they say they were looking at. it's looking like the public option might be included now in the big health care reform plan but even if it is passed most of you would not have a chance to switch your coverage. and an actor at a haunted house decides to spook some of his customers even more and then a cop pulls a gun. so in other words somebody

turned the tables on the actor. we now know what the pilots say they were doing when they overshot the airport by 150 miles. the pilots said they were using their personal laptops and lost track of time. now the pilots told the ntsb that they were focused on a new computer program that arranges schedules, crew schedules. they did not monitor the airplane during their talk. >> these pilots were simply not paying attention for a period of time, and is that a serious offense? it is. but it's not one that i think put the lives of those people in jeopardy. >> you're always supposed to maintain situational awareness and somebody is always supposed to be watching and flying the airplane. that's your first order of duty. that's your first priority. there really is no excuse, no reason to allow it to go to this point. should not have happened. >> well rng the pilots say they didn't realize their mistake until a flight attendant called the cockpit five minutes before

they were supposed to land. by then they were flying over wisconsin. delta airlines which owns northwest, suspended the pilots. it says it violates airline policy and may cost the pilots their job. delta sent passengers a $500 travel voucher for the inconvenience. the health care reform roller coaster is taking another turn. senate majority leader harry reid says a government run health insurance plan will be in the senate bill. now states will be allowed to opt out, though. he admits he's not sure that he has the 60 votes he needs. moderate gop senator olympia snowe says she is disappointed. >> it's regrettable because i have worked in good faith all of these months on a bipartisan basis and as you know have been standing alone at this point as a republican in order to do so because i believe in good public policy. >> we'll have to move forward on this and there will come a time, i hope where she sees the wisdom of supporting a health

care bill. >> well, even if the senate can get the votes for a public option, it may never be an option for you. in about ten minutes correspondent richard lui explains why people with employer-based coverage still would not have a choice. the woman who couldn't remember her own name when she turned up in new york city apparently left everything behind when she left home. police say that she emptied her bank account but she left behind her wallet i.d., cell phone clothes and her bike. authorities have no idea how she got from washington state all the way to the east coast. here's her high school principal. >> she was a very bright girl very intelligent smart. we enjoyed having her here. she was a model student. she didn't act out against anything we did here. she was a good girl. i hope she gets her health. i hope she gets safe and gets her life straightened out. >> well, her father says she's disappeared before five months ago she was found lying near a creek on the family farm and

haunted house kashgcharacter, an actor. police say the actor chased the off-duty cop and entered the parking lot to get an extra scream. that's when he pointed a gun at him. the police officer says alcohol may have been involved. >> we were about three or four feet apart and he held his arm out like this with his gun and his child was pulling on his arm. >> callers said he seemed to be very intoxicated and people inside the house of screams noted that. again, when he was being processed two of the officers noted his speech was slurred, a moderate odor of alcohol coming from his breath. he didn't seem to be taking this quite as seriously as he should have been. >> moderate odor of alcohol. the officer is charged with assault and reckless endangerment. he will find out this morning if he will be suspended without pay. so far there's been no response from him or his attorney.

brother rafael who is also serving in afghanistan. maybe you have loved ones in the military you want to salute. cnn.com/robin. more details now on a major turnaround in health care reform efforts. senate majority leader harry reid put the public option back in with a caveat that states could opt out. correspondent richard lui joins us now. will that help get him the 60 vobill? >> even senator reid admits he's not sure about this. he still has to persuade three moderate democrats to back his plan. ben nelson of nebraska mary landrieu of louisiana and if reid cannot get their votes he may lose other support from other democrats who want to make sure health care reform is passed this year. >> i am for any version that gets us to 60. my goal is to get on the floor and pass it off the floor. that's my goal. and public option may not be part of that. >> now baucus had voted against a public option in the past. >> for argument's sake let's say

the version becomes law, what would it mean for the average person watching right now their health care coverage? >> what's in it for me? if you have health insurance through your job, nothing, robin. people with employer-based coverage are actually blocked from switching to this public option right now. he says many people pushing for it don't realize this. >> when i've been in my town meetings, people stand up at rallies and say public option or bust. and then i would say, folks, i really appreciate your activism. are you aware that the way these public option bills are written more than 90% of you wouldn't even get to choose them? and people were practically falling out of the bleachers. >> with that said, there are still tens of millions of folks across the united states without health insurance who would be able to buy into this public option robin, unless of course, their state decided to opt out. now we want to know what you think, post your comments on the facebook page and we'll show

start at $8,000 like it is now and then every quarter it would come down so $6,000 then $4,000. you get the idea. now that's less expensive than a competing plan that would extend the full credit, the full $8,000, and also make it available for a lot more home buyers as buyers. as of right now the clock runs out, november 30th. the recession may be over. a report due thursday is expected to show the economy grew over the summer. i said grew. that would be good news in a bad economy. this is the gross domestic product and it will likely confirm the recession theoretically ended in june or july. i say theoretically because i know you don't necessarily feel it. gp is the biggest gauge we have of the whole economy. everything, every car, every service, every haircut, it may be improving but the job market is a different indicator and it tends to lag the rest of the economy.

a 7-year-old florida girl whose body was found in a landfill will be laid to rest today. hundreds of people paid respects to somer thompson during a viewing last night. her funeral is this morning. after the service people will release thousands of purple balloons into the air, her favorite color. >> we don't know her personally but our hearts with there as parents. that's what tears our hearts out.

may. he said his dad is the reason he's in the nfl and calls him his number one fan and coach. and there's the long pass to him right there. friends, family and teammates have slain connecticut football player jasper howard said their final farewell at his funeral monday. the entire uconn football team was there. head coach randy edsall praised howard saying he was on track for greatness. howard was buried in a nearby cemetery. police have still made no arrests in the killing. the last time you saw this man he was in a congressional steroid hearing. well, now home run slugger mark mcgwire is back with the cardinals as a hitting coach. he is. he's back. he famously refused to answer steroid questions. you may remember that. the team says they're not going to shield him from the media, but most in the media, including myself, believes he deserves a second chance. let's see how he does. this guy needs way more than a second chance. a former nba star may have squandered away $1 10e million. >> doing what? >> who knows? friends and former teammates say antoine walker lost almost everything he made and is facing

them forever. >> what's the last year's tax return you can lay your hands on? if you're like most people it's maybe four five six years ago. not good enough. as states are scrounging for every penny they can get their hands on, they're reaching way, way, way way back. in fact i saw a story in the "chicago tribune" about them beating somebody up for state taxes from 1983. now, who's going to be able to produce a return from 1983? well actually i can because i've kept all my returns going back to the '70s. and you should moving forward, save, if you have a state income tax, save your state tax return. always save your federal. after six years you can dump the supporting material, but keep the return so that there's some proof that you properly filed your return. why? because there's no statute generally, if they say you failed to file. i'm clark howard. for more ways for you to stay
