>> the house bill that represents a compromise among democrats, some of them still pushing for what they call a more robust public option. republicans did not take part in negotiations. in fact, the house gop leadership vigorously opposes any public option claiming it will result in higher taxes and rising medical costs. >> it's going to raise the cost of americans' health insurance. it's going to kill jobs with tax hikes and new mandates in it. and it's going to cut seniors' health care benefits. and if all that isn't bad enough the mandates on states will bankrupt what are already states that have huge financial problems today. we've got better ideas and we'll be talking about them over the next week. >> the health care proposal should reach the house floor sometime next week. and texas health officials now say prisoners will not be getting vaccinated before the general public. talking about swine flu here. texas prison officials asked if all inmates koudcould get the h1n1
2:01 pm
flu vaccine. and that didn't sit very well with some texans who were finding it tough to get the shot themselves. prison officials says the flu could spread rapidly throughout the population there. so far the federal government has only allocated less than 1.7 million to the entire state of texas. and the temperature may be dropping but the price at the pump going the other way. it is surging right now. but why? we'll have answers straight from an oil trader.

how about some good news in a bad economy for today? how about this? the economy might have taken a big step toward recovery. the growth has essentially ended the recession might be ending.
2:04 pm
so as we talk about recovery, chief gas prices have been one of the silver linings of this down economy. but suddenly prices are on the rise again. poppy harlow is here to talk about it again. i know you don't have to deal with this being in manhattan. >> reporter: right. the subway is my car. but a lot of people upset about this. the national average for gas today, $2.69 a gallon according to aaa. what we've seen in the last 16 days is this big spike prices up 20 cents in the last 16 days. a lot of folks saying, why is this? they're baffled. listen to what some folks we talked to in florida had to say about that. >> it's terrible. it's ridiculous. it's going up like ten cents every week. >> it's $2.29 two weeks ago. now it's $2.65. that's crazy. >> i have no clue why the gas prices are going up again. after they went down from almost
2:05 pm
$4 something and then they all go down. now they're going up again? i don't know why. i don't understand at all because we have enough oil. it shouldn't be that high. >> reporter: there you gochlt she made the connection. big reason? oil prices. this chart is oil starting at the beginning of the year, hitting the low in march, and going up. this is the surge in oil prices -- gas and oil prices move in concert. that's what's going on. the woman said it. we've got enough oil for now at least. not so many fundamentals driving this but people are paying more every day right now at the pump. >> everyone's asking why? i'll join in, why? what is behind the rise? >> reporter: we wanted to know. we headed downtown here in manhattan. we went to the nimex where they trade the oil futures every day. we asked them, are there any fundamentals to this? why is oil higher? why is gas higher? here's what they told us -- is
2:06 pm
there a fundamental basis for oil rising as it has? >> no not if you're looking at real supply/demand. but as a hedge against the weak dollar that's what we're following. >> i think the run-up has been unwarranted mostly because of the devaluation of the dollar. if you see a pick-up there, you'll see a change in the crude. >> reporter: it's those guys that trade the oil, send the price higher or lower to companies like airlines, you feel it at the pump. also what's going on is oil is baugh and sold in dollars. when the dollar falls in value, you have investors around the world that can get more for their money. and the prices go up. the traders i talked to not exactly welcome news for folks at the gas pump. they said they can see oil prices hitting 100 bucks next year. and big news from exxonmobil, go to cnnmoney.com and see how much money they made or didn't make
2:07 pm
lost quarter. it's less than last year. >> poppy harlow, you enjoy that subway. good to talk to you. a former female writer with david letterman is breaking her silence on what it was like to actually work there. in an exclusive interview with joy behar, she said she never slept with any staffers at the letterman show. she says she walked away from her dream job because it was a hostile work environment. >> what's going on that made you leave? you loved the job and the show? something was going on that made you feel uncomfortable. >> it was just a situation where i was -- you talked about it on "the view" yourself. if you're doing your job and you're working hard and you're in the middle of a soap opera, then that's not -- i wasn't going to thrive professionally.
2:08 pm
i didn't get the memo as a young girl that said, you should have low self-esteem and put up with crap. so i just -- i quit. >> all of this coming after david letterman admitted having a relationship with staffers. catch "the joy behar show" 9:00 p.m. eastern time here on hln. have you seen this article on cnn.com? it has to do with the m word. monogamy monogamy. a psychiatrist and her husband say staying faithful to a mate for a lifetime isn't probable. caveat here, the authors have been married for 32 years. on the other hand, a couples specialist at emory university school of medicine insists lifelong monogamy has tangible rewards.
2:09 pm
so we're talking to you about this. getting all kinds of comments here. want to get to this question -- the question being, is monogamy still realistic? is mating for life a thing of the past? call us right now. or send us an e-mail to cnn.com/hln. we'll be airing your comments hopefully some colorful comments throughout the day here. how about this segway? jon gosselin, problems keep piling up, especially with the ladies in his life. but this time it is the reality dad's girlfriend and what she has to say about him. pretty shocking.

a florida woman has started to recover from the swine flu after five weeks in a coma. doctors induced that coma after lori frye showed up in the e.r. in such bad shape, they thought she might die. >> they took her right into the emergency area quick. i think they seen she was having
2:12 pm
a hard time breathing respiratory problems and everything. >> i'm happy to be able to tuck my son into bed at night. that was the one thing he would call me in the hospital crying because i wasn't able to tuck him in. >> her husband was told three times that she might not make it. good thing now is she's doing better but still might not get to go home until thanksgiving. you've heard of chicken pox party, parent, if they have one child infected they want to get everyone sick. how about a swine flu party? people are holding those. the idea? people infect one another so they have immunity later on if there's a stronger strain. but authorities say they could be gambling with their lives. the flu has proven fatal, so avoid others if you are sick. and jon gosselin's girlfriend talking once again here. this time, she has shocking claims about him. "showbiz tonight's" brooke anderson joining me in
2:13 pm
hollywood. i know we're talking about hailey glassman. weave been waiting to hear from her. not painting a nice picture of her boyfriend, is she? >> no, she's not. if this doesn't make jon gosselin the most hated bachelor in the country, i really don't know what does. his current girlfriend, hailey glassman, speaking out to another entertainment show about jon gosselin, says he's got a really short fuse and that he's emotionally abusive. listen to what she says -- i shouldn't have to put up with being emotionally abused. i cry and say why are you so mean to me? i don't want to leave him all alone. at the end of the day, i love him but i dislike him at times. when i love someone, i would never hurt them. basically she's saying the guy throws some major temper tantrums. and she also admits that their relationship is not normal. she even breaks down in tears talking about how she's treated not just by jon but by outsiders. listen. she goes on --
2:14 pm
>> brooke, i don't know about you, but i'm surprised these two are still together. it sounds like they're both pretty darn mizzable. but i think jon has been so focused on fame and attention, he hasn't seen how his actions are impacting those around him. i sincerely hope the kids aren't privy to all this. >> but she says i still love him? i don't get it. >> i don't either. >> one more thing, you got a statement from jon gosselin that just came in. what's that? >> yeah and it signals a step in the right direction. here is what he says though he doesn't directly address hailey glassman's complaints.
2:15 pm
>> do you know what this statement says to me? one, that he did not write it himself. it's far too eloquent and well-written. but, two, maybe he is committing himself to re-evaluating and becoming a better person. that's good news. >> air quotes, re-evaluate. we'll see about that. brooke anderson, you've got a good show tonight. >> we do. we'll have more details on this and the great jon gosselin debate. we're also going to have viewer comments. you don't want to miss what our friends at home are saying about jon gosselin. tv's first most provocative entertainment news show, "showbiz tonight," 11:00 p.m. eastern and pacific. we'll see you then. >> thank you, brooke. a storm creeping across the rk mountains leaving 3 to 4 feet on the ground in denver. it is the heaviest october

good and stable condition. the attack happened around 6:30 a.m. local time in the temple's parking lot. right now, the lapd is just trying to figure out exactly what happened. >> we do not know what motivated this. we are looking at every possibility. and at this point, we have a lone individual who came in and for unknown reason at this point, shot at these two individuals. whether it was a robbery or some other type of motive, we have no understanding. we certainly recognize the location. and we're sensitive to that. but we do not know that this is a hate crime at all at this point. >> here's what else we know. authorities say a 17-year-old who matches what they're saying a loose description of the suspect is in custody. but they're stopping short of calling him a suspect. they are talking to the teen to see what role, if any, he had in the shootings. and those four teenagers accused of gang-raping a 15-year-old high school student were in court today.

three wore bulletproof vests and only three of them didn't enter a plea. the four teens charged with rape and acting together in the attack making them eligible for life in prison. and last night, there was an emotional public safety hearing where a teacher scolded officials for the lack of security guards. >> we were laughed at last summer for asking for 13 security guards. we were laughed at when we said we needed $80,000 worth of cameras. i went to dejohn middle school myself to look at their camera systems to make sure those would be the best quality for richmond high. our school approved them. we never got them. >> police say as many as ten people might have attacked the girl for 2 1/2 hours. they also say up to two dozen people watched what happened and never called police. authorities say they found out about that assault from a

we all know about ben franklin flying that kite in a storm. neil armstrong taking that one giant leap for mankind. but what about leonard kleinrock typing the letter "l."
2:34 pm
40 years after that first internet communication, cnn.com caught up with kleinrock and reggie aqui is here with that. the letter "l"? >> reporter: yeah, if they could do it again they would write something more meaningful like as man made his first step on the moon. that didn't happen this time. it was more like a simple communication between one colleague to another. but little did they know, it was the birth of the internet. 40 years old, doesn't look a day over 20, that's what i say. kleinrock was a ucla computer science professor. he sent the message from a ucla computer to another computer at stanford. that first message that was typed was supposed to be the word l-o-g-. like log. but the stanford machine crashed after the professor wrote the letters l and o.

that professor is still teaching at ucla and he says he's less the father of the internet than one of the fathers. still he says he regards the internet as a member of his family and part of his dna. however, he's not always proud of his son, the internet, or daughter. he regrets people rely on it so heavily. he says kids, when you go to a fast-food place, they can't even give change because they're so reliant on computers. he also fears the internet's dark side, virus, spam, identity theft. he wishes that stronger user authentications were given. still, happy birthday internet. >> you'd think he'd have a bajillion dollars. let's move on. what else do you have on the site highlighting another
