you're attention you're getting. someone did tell her the cameras were on, right? >> if you want to be left alone, this is not the way to do it. she thinks hailey is trying to hop on board the jon and kate fame train. and ironically, that may benefit jon. >> maybe it does portray him as the bad boy, but it's still bringing more publicity to jon. they're taking kate out of the headlines and putting hailey and jon in the headlines. >> all right. so jon's own girlfriend, a woman who says she loves him, is lashing out at him. this is just incredible. coming up on "showbiz tonight," i can't wait for this fired up debate. you are not going to want to miss it. is jon gosselin the most despised bachelor in america? tonight, david letterman under fire from the wrath of the writer. in a brand-new hln exclusive, one of the letterman's first female writers is speaking out and i can tell you, it's making for big news breaking. nell scovell who worked for letterman in the '90s is claiming that letterman ran a hostile, sexually charged atmosphere at nbc.
11:00 am
in a scathing new interview with hln's own joy behar, scovell adds even more fuel to the fire. so today i have to ask, can letterman handle the wrath of the writer? joining me tonight in hollywood is carlos diaz, who is a correspondent for "extra." also tonight in hollywood, kim serafin, a senior editor for "in touch weekly." carlos, kim, it was just a few weeks ago david letterman admitted to having sex with women who worked for him at his show on cbs. now you've got nell scovell who worked for letterman at nbc in the '90s when he was doing his late-night show, claiming that she quit because of what she called sexual politics. she described that dramatic moment on hln's "the joy behar show." listen to this. >> it was my dream job. i loved that show and it was a breakthrough. so i moved back to new york to take this job and five months later, i ended up walking away
11:01 am
from my dream job because it was a hostile work environment. >> okay. kim, here's what i'm wondering. if this was going on back in the '90s, why do you think no one would publicly call letterman out until now? do you think that maybe no one would have believed her? >> well, it's interesting. because she did wait for a long time, obviously, almost 20 years to talk about this. so she obviously must feel this way. but you have to wonder why you're not hearing from other women who worked for david letterman. i, personally, know people, both men and women who have worked for david letterman and i'm not hearing from any of them. she did only work for him for, i think, four to six months, as well. so, look, she has recollections. it seems that in her piece she wrote and in her interview with joy behar she talks a lot more about writers' rooms in general on late-night talk shows, not just dave's talk show. so maybe it's just getting more women into these writers' rooms aez well. >> maybe so. hiring more women as the writers. "showbiz tonight" did reach out to letterman today about
11:02 am
scovell's startling claims and he's not commenting. they didn't even want to address these claims. carlos, are you thinking that letterman's admission earlier this month to having sex with women he worked with makes her claims more believable? >> no, because she says, david did not hit on me. letterman did not hit on me. but what it does, what letterman's situation does is it opens up the avenue for us to talk about this and to talk about this men's club that is the writer's room for late-night tv. and if i'm starting a show today, i'm looking at what this young lady said in "vanity fair" and saying, wait a minute, i'm going to hire as many women as i can for writers, because, obviously, they're not being hired and maybe we can have a show that's different with a different kind of comedic point of view. >> yeah, very true. we women give you a little bit more flavor, i think, carlos. >> i've heard rumors of that. i've heard those rumors, yeah. >> i do want you to hear what scovell said in the exclusive interview with joy behar right
11:03 am
here on hln, because it does give us even more insight into what it was like for her to work with letterman. take a listen. >> if you're doing your job and you're working hard and you're in the middle of a soap opera, then that's not -- i wasn't going to thrive, professionally. and i didn't get the memo as a young girl that said you should have low self-esteem and put up with crap, so i just -- i quit. >> yeah. well, good for her. and while nobody is suggesting that nell scovell is making this up, kim, do you think that her waiting so long to make these claims could make some people question whether she is telling the entire story? >> sure. i think, obviously, people will wonder why she didn't speak up sooner and why just just waited until now when all this came out about david letterman. obviously, she's done a good job for herself. she worked on a lot of other tv shows, created a tv show herself. but she, even in her article that she wrote, in her piece
11:04 am
that she wrote, said that part of the reason there are not enough female writers because not enough female writers apply for these jobs. so you can't totally blame david letterman or any of the late-night talk show hosts when you don't have enough women applying for these jobs. >> so get out there and apply. >> or be chelsea handler or be wanda sykes. >> my take is it takes everything to get your job done well. so distractions like hostility and harassment have no place in the workplace or anywhere else, for that matter. carlos diaz kim serafin, good to see you. thanks. there's brand-new outrage today over what tyra banks just did. tyra painted contestants on "america's next top model" in dark colors. i don't really get this. tyra says she was discriminated against in her modeling career and now she's painting people in blackface? what is going on here? also, the brand-new battle between sarah palin and levi johnston. >> are you hurt by all this? >> i was, yeah. now it's just kind of like, all right, well, now it's my turn. >> and now, tonight, sarah

or in america? startling brand-new allegations from jon's 22-year-old girlfriend that jon is verbally abusive and a liar. also, sarah palin strikes back. >> are you hurt by all this? >> i was, yeah. now it's just kind of like, all right, well, now it's my turn. >> levi johnston's brand-new claims that he has some secrets that would really hurt sarah palin. tonight, palin's unbelievable
11:24 am
response. plus, we're asking, is it time for sarah to stop talking? and tyra's blackface controversy. why tyra is in hot water for dressing up white models as black women. plus, more stories breaking from the "showbiz news ticker." tv's first provocative entertainment news show continues right now! welcome back to "showbiz tonight." it is 30 minutes past the hour. i'm a.j. hammer, broadcasting tonight and every night from new york city. >> and i'm brooke anderson, coming to you from hollywood. and tonight, is jon gosselin now america's most hated bachelor after an unbelievable attack by his very own girlfriend? yeah, in a startling brand-new interview today, jon's 22-year-old girlfriend, hailey glassman, is calling the father of eight abusive. wait until you hear hailey's disturbing claims about jon's temper. also breaking tonight, sarah strikes back.
11:25 am
sarah palin on the attack today and slamming the father of her grandson, levi johnston, over his threats against her and her family. >> if she's going to go out there and say stuff to me -- about me, i'm going to leak some things on her. i mean, that's just how it is. >> but i have to ask, why, sarah, why? should sarah just not respond anymore? >> brooke, i'm thinking at this point, silence is golden, and that's for both of them. joining me tonight from hollywood, tanika ray, an entertainment journalist. also in hollywood, kim serafin, a senior editor for "in touch weekly." i want to begin with this brand-new interview today with jon gosselin's young girlfriend, hailey glassman. hailey really slams jon for being emotionally abusive and throws their whole relationship into question. here's what she's saying. "we're at a point now where i don't know why i love him. he gets frustrated and angry and i'm the one who gets the brunt. he'll call me and take his anger out on me. he has mantrums. i shouldn't have to be put up with being emotionally abused. i cry and say, why are you so mean to me? he takes it out on me.
11:26 am
he talks over me so i can't speak. sometimes he has trouble with the truth and he will dance and dance around his lies. he's like jekyll and hyde, but i still love him." kim, does this cement jon's reputation as perhaps the most hated bachelor in america? >> it's so bizarre to me, especially listening to this. he's jekyll and hyde, but she still loves him. he has mantrums, but she still loves him. he has trouble with the truth, but she still loves him. i don't know what this attraction is to jon but yeah i think this pretty much cements it. it's pretty much what people have been saying about him for a long time and here his girlfriend is saying this. it's so bizarre. this should be on the reality show. this is what tlc should be doing on monday nights. >> yes, exactly! i mean, truly bizarre. i guess it's the definition of a love/hate relationship. hailey goes on to say that her relationship has caused a deep divide with her own parents. saying about that, "he has driven a fork between my family and i. my parents want me to be a normal 22-year-old.
11:27 am
it's not a normal relationship, i love him. but as for my family and i, he needs to regain our trust. he lied to my mother." tanika, what does it say to you, that his own girlfriend, who he claims he loves more than kate, and who claims she loves him, is now calling him out as a jackass. >> well, it's saying that he probably is a jackass. kate emasculated him on national television for several seasons of the show. and he's just carrying inging on his personality with his new relationship. big deal, she's 22, she think she's in love. you know in a year or two from now, she'll get over it and she'll be like, oh, i was wrong, he was abusive and i got over it. it just seems like a big, silly mess and i think she's just a young girl that wants a little bit of attention and wants the world to know that she feels bad about her relationship. but when it comes down to it, he's not the most hated.
11:28 am
he's not that special to be that hated. >> lest we forgot, tanika, hailey is not the first to come forward claiming that jon is a big fat liar. in fact, former "star" magazine reporter kate major dated jon and resigned from her job because of this supposed romance that she had with jon. in an exclusive interview with "showbiz tonight," she told me jon is full of it. watch. >> jon told me that he was falling for me. he called me the new kate and referred to kate gosselin as his ex-kate or the old kate. and he's just -- i fell for him. i completely believed everything that he said. i will take a lie detector test and i would love for jon to take a lie detector test. because for him to say that there was no romance is a complete lie. >> all right, i've got to be honest. while everybody else is lying, a lot of people questioned what kate major told me, saying her credibility with us in question. but, kim, it really does seem like she is singing the exact same tune as hailey here. >> it does seem like several women keep repeating this same thing. and i hate to say this, but i feel like if him and hailey
11:29 am
break up, there'll be another woman there. so maybe he's not the most hated bachelor in america. women seem to be drawn to him. i don't know a.j., i have not met him, so i'm kind of afraid to get close to him, because maybe i'll be sucked into this vortex of love that surrounds him. >> sucked into his ed hardy t-shirts and his new earring. he's so hot and young. not! >> his vortex of love and supposed lies. we've got to give you the whole package there. maybe we should just move on. because we have sarah palin's brand-new slam on levi johnston. in an interview with the cbs "early show," levi johnston has been making some pretty ominous threats towards palin and her family, saying that he can hurt her. and the family. well, just this morning, levi back on tv and slamming the palins once again. >> i don't think it should matter what -- in their eyes, what i'm doing. she's doing her thing, i'm doing mine. you know, she's doing her book, she's quitting governor for her money, so i don't see how -- you

know, we're kind of on the same page here. >> just riveting, as always. sarah palin, however, has had enough. she released a brand-new statement to "showbiz tonight." she is striking back. here what sarah is saying. "consider the source of the most recent attention-getting lies. those who would sell their body for money reflect a desperate need for attention and are likely to say and do anything for even more attention." sarah, of course, referring to levi's upcoming nude spread in "playgirl." kim, are you with me that sarah palin, i really believe that she's doing herself a disservice by dignifying anything that this guy levi says with any kind of a comment. >> you know, i don't agree with that. i think there was a point when she was responding to things when she was still governor and it didn't seem kind of gubernatorial to do that. but i think he goes very personally after her when he says that she called her son retarded. i really think that if she didn't respond people would wonder if there was some truth in this.
11:31 am
i think she really did need to respond and hopefully put an end to all of this. i do agree, though, that when she responds, then we talk about it and the story continues, but there's a point when she has to say, enough is enough. he's the one that is starting this. >> in case you had any concern that i wasn't keeping a proper daily planner on all that is going on in the world of levi and in sarah, i noticed the strangest ultimate coincidence today and "showbiz tonight" did confirm this for me. levi will be shooting his "playgirl" spread on the same day that sarah palin is sitting down for an interview with oprah winfrey. how about that?! brooke anderson, come on back in here. i think that sarah, as i said, should just ignore the kid. what do you think? >> i do too. just zip it up, sarah. because her responding lends more credence to what this guy is saying and this is exactly what he wants, a.j. because as long as the two sides are feuding, he gets publicity, he gets offers to do interviews, gets offers to pose in magazines. and in my opinion, he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
11:32 am
so if she would just ignore him, i think everybody else would probably disregard him as well. >> tanika ray, here is the most important question of all. if you had the opportunity to either be in the audience for that tapg of the oprah winfrey show with sarah palin or be on hand for the nude "playgirl" shoot with levi johnston where are you going to be tanika ray? >> i'll be slitting my wrist. one thing he's not is a liar. he's not smart enough to know how the lie. he told me straight up that sarah palin is a liar. he has no reason to gain from saying that she's lying about the things that she did during the race, like when she pretended like it was her son and not her daughter's, when she had him there and pretended like they were a happy family. >> so you're buying it? >> he said the whole time she was lying and knew that they couldn't stand each other and that they would not be together anymore. >> i've got to end it there. >> levi, not smart, but not a liar. >> appreciate it. we've been asking you to sound

off on our "showbiz tonight" question of the day. jon gosselin, has he become the most despised bachelor in america? vote at cnn.com/showbiztonight or e-mail showbiztonight@cnn.com. tonight, there is brand-new controversy over tyra banks. why would tyra paint white models in blackface? it's truly stunning, almost as stunning as the new controversy surrounding "seinfeld" creator larry david. here's something i never thought i'd say on tv. he urinated on a picture of jesus. and sex and the series. the woman who was arrested for allegedly trying to trade sex for world series tickets. brand-new developments tonight. was the whole thing just a big misunderstanding? were the police way off base? this is "showbiz tonight" on hln. >> and now the "showbiz news ticker." more stories from the "showbiz tonight" newsroom making news right now.

welcome back to "showbiz tonight." i'm a.j. hammer in new york. >> i'm brooke anderson in hollywood. and tonight, you have got to hear about the explosive tyra banks blackface outrage. contestants on tyra's "america's next top model" show were covered from head to toe in varying degrees of dark makeup
11:37 am
to celebrate exotic racial combinations. but is this really an excuse for using blackface? also breaking today, the creator of the "seinfeld" show under fire from catholics for splashing urine on a picture of jesus christ. tonight, there is a major outcry for an apology. and there were brand-new developments today in the out of this world sex and the series caper. the woman who allegedly wanted to trade sex for world series tickets speaks out for the very first time and says, just kidding. with me in hollywood tonight, carlos diaz, a correspondent for "extra," and in new york tonight, janell snowden, the host of vh1 news. carlos, janell, let's begin with the tyra blackface outrage. i want you to take a look at this from last night's "america's next top model." here's tyra's explanation for using models painted in various shades of black. she says it was a celebration of exotic racial combinations like russian-moroccan, but some
11:38 am
people are outraged saying this is nothing more than blackface which has an awful, painful history. janell, was tyra just being provocative, or is blackface plain and simple offensive? >> it's offensive. people are like, we have barack obama as president, we've come so far, no. we've not come that far. here's an idea why not hire models that are of those races. there are plenty of beautiful mixed-race people that are trying to get on tv and rather than having people impersonate them, use the real thing. >> hire those beautiful biracial women out there. there are plenty out there. and i think what outrages people the most, maybe, is that this is tyra banks, a trailblazing black supermodel who's done this. take a look at what was written on a blog today on entertainmentweekly.com. "do i think that tyra is setting out to dehumanize anyone?
11:39 am
i really, really don't, but it's weak and irresponsible to act as if dressing up a white girl so she looks black doesn't have major culture al baggage." carlos, do you think that tyra should have noun better, especially since she has painfully confessed that, yes, she has been discriminated against in her own career? >> but on her show, tyra, she's explored these avenues we dressing up as a homeless person, by dressing up like an overweight person. she's gone there. i think she though this was another extension of that and that's why she thought it was safe haven to do this. but apparently, it's not. >> not at all. >> come on, carlos, don't you think sometimes these stunts are done for ratings and she should have been a little bit more sensitive? >> i think when you say say the word "blackface," that connotation is always seen as extremely negative. i think if you're giving someone a different skin color and be in that person's skin for a day, to me, there are bigger problems in the world than that. >> there are, but, i mean, there's no way that you can pretend to know what it feels
11:40 am
like to be of a different race just by painting your face. and i think tyra should have known better. i think it was a desperate attempt for ratings. >> maybe she will know better next time. we'll have to all agree to disagree on that one. i want to get to another explosive controversy tonight. "seinfeld" creator larry david is taking major heat from the influential catholic league for offending catholics in a totally over-the-top moment on his show "curb your enthusiasm" where he is seen urinating on a picture of jesus christ. watch. ♪ >> yesterday, it was actually right after you left, a miracle happened. i went into the bathroom and i called my mother in, because there is a painting hanging up of jesus. it's beautiful.
11:41 am
and he's got a tear coming down on his face. >> really? >> a real tear that was never there before. >> okay, janell, does larry david owe catholics an apology or is this just comedy? >> if larry david made an apology to everyone he's offended, he would have no show. his show is about apologies. i found it somewhat funny. i think i would have been more offended had he purposefully urinated on the painting, but because it was larry david, it was one of those random moments that you often do but don't talk about. and i found it funny. >> but it's purposefully scripted. it felt it was sacrilegious, mocking christianity and completely demeaning. a.j., i know you're a big fan of "curb your enthusiasm." when you saw this episode, did you just think, oh, no? >> not even for a moment.
11:42 am
and as you said i'm a huge fan of larry david. i know there are some people who are more sensitive about religious matters, so i totally understand why some would protest. but as janell said if larry david apologized to everybody he ever offended on his show, that's all he would be doing. i don't think fans of his really were objecting to what was going on. >> let me let you take a look at what hbo told us today. anyone who follows "curb your enthusiasm" knows that the show is full of parody and satire. larry david makes fun of everyone, most especially himself. the humor is always playful and certainly never malicious. let's move on now. i have a big update that you know you want to hear. it's all about the absolutely wild sex in the series drama. here's the deal with this. cops arrested a pennsylvania woman who was allegedly trying to sell sex in exchange for tickets to the world series. the woman is this woman, 43-year-old susan finkelstein and she posted an ad on craigslist. the title was, desperate blond needs ws tix. well, instead of tickets, she
11:43 am
got handcuffs. today she spoke out for the very first time. she denies that she was offering sex. she says she was just flirting for a discount. listen to this. >> i was hoping to get cheap tickets and maybe meet someone and talk and bat my eyelashes and maybe gets some tickets, cheap tickets, cheaper tickets. discounted. some cheaper tickets. >> by the way, i didn't mention, she's married. carlos, are you like me when you're watching that saying, yeah right! >> this is the first time in world series history someone has offered to give up third base in the stands. i'm not outraged. have you seen the prices of world series tickets? they're outrageous. you have to do something new and original. in light of what's gone on on craigslist this year as far as the negative things, i think it's probably not the best venue. but listen. it gives a whole new meaning to stub hub. >> how about that, carlos diaz janelle.
