hey, good morning, it's saturday. i'm natascha curry. thanks for watching "lhn news and views." a man hunt is under way in cleveland, ohio for this man, 50-year-old anthony sovall. police went to arrest him on charges of rape. police found two decomposing bodies upstairs and a freshly dug grave in the basement with another body in it. police searched around the house and found three more bodies. the bodies are identified, but people who live in the neighborhood are worried about who was buried in sowell's home. >> i pray to god if it's not my cousin, and if it is my cousin, i'm sorry. >> sowell was convicted for a 1989 rape and served 15 years in prison. >> the stock markets took a dive we haven't seen in quite a while. all three went down yesterday. and the dow had the biggest

one-day drop in half a year. the government said consumer spending went down in september, the first time in five months. at the same time, personal incomes remain flat. recovery could run out of steam if consumers start spending less. president obama is getting more advice as he considers his next move in afghanistan. the president met yesterday with the joint chiefs of staff and other top military advisors. this comes with the deadliest month for other forces there. sources tell cnn each ranked to the military got a chance to explain the impact of sending more troops. the army and marine corps have expressed concerns it would be tougher to give troops promised time at home to their families. >> as the obama administration considers the strategy in afghanistan, a state department official there resigned in protest of the war. and he's been getting a lot of support for his decision. hoh said he was leaving because,

quote, i fail to see the value or worth of continued u.s. casualties or expenditures of resources in support of the afghanistan government in what is truly a 35-year-old civil war. hoh talked to fa reed zacaria about what it's like on the ground in afghanistan. >> the top military brass have all supported the military request. do you think on the ground there's a different feeling? >> oh, yes. yes, there is. on the ground, the perspective is, what is the strategic value of what we're doing here? why are we doing it? what are we getting out of it? it's not going to defeat al qaeda. take the two goals and defeat al qaeda because of the nuclear weapons and the relations with india and islamabad, 60,000 troops taking 50, 60 dead in this country a month and how many wounded and killing afghans

no-so-subtle reminder it's harry reid who put it in the health care bill. senator reid's leadership was on full display said one e-mail, he took a courageous stand in fighting for and including the public option. why the sudden sales job? >> the more liberal side of the party questions whether or not we could get it done, whether or not the leadership was behind it. >> reporter: and questioned senator reid? >> sure. >> reporter: penny lee, a former reid aide admits part of the motivation is reassure an anxious democratic base. >> it wasn't a one-time press conference he had. he said, i'm going to fight for it, i believe in it. >> reporter: lee and others say that's his goal as a national leader. but home in nevada where reid is facing a tough re-election battle, he has different reasons for promoting a support for public option. >> harry reid is in a lot of trouble. what i like to call reid fatigue. >> reporter: a recent poll said 50%, half of nevadans view him

unfavorably, a stunning figure. >> not the most personable guy. he doesn't have much charisma. he has a survival instinct unlike any i've seen in politics. >> reporter: survival in nevada means appealing to independent voters and they tend to support a government-run health care option. >> the success is going to play -- or failure is going to play in to the main campaign theme which is re-elect me, i'm the guy in nevada and the nation needs in washington, i can get things done. >>. >> reporter: a huge risk for reid, of course, is what if he doesn't get it done? what if he can't find the votes for a public option in a senate health care bill? that's a real possibility. one of the reasons we're told reid's aides are split from the beginning and whether this is the right move. whether or not, reid is making a decision, he's clearly pushing it. he knows he has to own it, whatever the outcome. dana bash, cnn, capitol hill. eric holder said a lawsuit

over warrantless wiretapping is threatening to expose ongoing intelligence work. holder wants the lawsuit thrown out. the first time the white house has tried to envoke the state secrets privilege. the bush administration envoked the privilege to get numerous lawsuits thrown out following the september 11 attacks. talks between afghan president hamid karzai and the man challenging him for his job have broken down. christiane amanpour who appears on cnn learned that karzai's oh poend, abdullah abdullah will likely boycott the runoff. the former ambassador to afghanistan predicts it country will have a power-sharing deal between karzai and abdullah. california officials say they're going to try to reopen the san francisco-oakland bay bridge on monday. but they say they can't guarantee it, even though they'll be working the whole weekend to repair it. the bridge was closed on tuesday after three steel pieces fell off of it in the middle of rush

hour, right in to traffic. they crashed right in to the laebs and injured one person. the bridge carries about 280,000 vehicles per day. so, it's halloween as we mentioned. a lot of people are going out trick or treating. it's exciting. but is there going to be good weather for all of that trick or treating going on. reynolds wolf joins us with a look at the forecast. it happens to depend on where you're going to be. on the eastern seaboard, there's going to be the frontal boundary and area of low pressure. west, dry conditions, warm in the desert southwest, you get to the pacific northwest, scattered showers are going to be a possibility. in terms of high temperatures today, you can expect the highs to get in the 60s, atlanta, memphis. 70s for washington, d.c., boston. 61 in philly. 50 for denver. you get to halloween night, it gets interesting. the rain is going to stay for

parts of the eastern seaboard. fairly dry for the nation's midsection. and then back to the pacific northwest, scattered showers very dry for much of southern california and in to the rockies. cool, but we should be snow-free. keep in mind, denver got about a foot of snowfall that fell over the last couple of days. that's a look at your forecast, i'm reynolds wolf for hln. there will be plenty of costumes and candy to go around tonight. but parents, what do you do with all of that chocolate and sugar at the end of the night? >> most of them probably get a couple of pounds of candy. and it's crazy. it's absolutely insane if they are allowed to put all of that inside them. >> one dentist wants your kids to trade in their treats for cash -- and it's all for a good cause.

found a way to bring a little country to the big city. dr. sanjay gupta takes a look at today's fit nation report. >> reporter: madonna redman is on a mission. we met her two weeks ago right here in one of the toughest neighborhoods in chicago. the last place you would expect to find a garden, but that's exactly what she showed me. what are we growing here? >> any number of things. those are collard greens on the far aisle there. >> reporter: she led an effort of what she calls urban farm sites. why? no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't find fresh produce in the neighborhood. >> if you wanted to, you could buy illegal drugs. you could get access to a variety of illegal drugs. if you wanted to buy a gun, you could buy a gun in this community. but if you wanted to find an organic tomato in this community if you didn't want to come to our urban farm site, you wouldn't be able to buy one. >> reporter: most people do their shopping at convenience stores like this one -- except

they're full of chips, sugary drinks, and candy. according to a new study by the journal of pediatric, shopping at these convenience stores is part of what's making our kids fat. researchers talked to kids outside of convenience stores and on average, they were eating 356 empty calories at every stop. what are you buying? there? >> chips, candy? >> reporter: let me see. but in neighborhoods like this one where diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure run rampant, we can't ignore the issue. >> there has to be an insistence that a healthy life style is a must. >> reporter: so la donna is adding store owner to her professions. >> graffiti and grub brings healthy life styles to the hip-hop generation. >> reporter: all in the hopes she can change the tide in the ever growing storm of obesity. dr. sanjay gupta, cnn, reporting.

for kids going trick or treating tonight, one dentist says he will buy your candy. he plans to send the candy to local troops serving in iraq and afghanistan. >> we like to call it a win-win-win. the kids are going to get a couple of dollars, we'll give them $1 a pound for the candy. we're going to get rid of some of the candy that doesn't do the best for them and we'll put the smiles on the face of soldiers. >> reporter: he knows this teaches children about tooth decay but gives them a patriotic lesson. this one is no halloween prank. a deer came crashing through the roof of an apartment complex and then decided to take a dip in the indoor pool. >> lucky day. avoiding the traffic. surviving the jump through the roof. swimming the laps. >> check out video from the security camera. you can see the deer walking around the pool a few time, then, jumping on in. at some point, it looks like

he's swimming laps here, doesn't it. the maintenance supervisor used a net to corral the deer to the shallow end. after 15 minutes of swimming, the deer walks up to the steps and takes off. philadelphia will host one of the biggest sports and entertainment weekends in any city anywhere. but folks, there could be a problem. uh-oh, larry smith has more on this. hey, larry. >> good morning, natascha. how about a strike by phillies' mass transit workers. they are threatening to walk off of the job at midnight if a new contract is not agreed upon, leading fans to two world series games. the eagles-giants nfl showdown. two hockey games, two pearl jam concerts may be looking for a ride. yeah, all in the next 48 hours in the same complex that houses four different venues. game three of the phillies-yankees world series is tonight with the best of seven tied at three apiece. the phillies trying to repeat for the first time in team history. the game four tomorrow night prompted the eagles, the giants

moved up from 4:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. eastern on sunday. both stadiums share parking getting eagles' fans out and phillies' fans in, could be dicy even with public transportation. four stations all busy in philly. would an empty stadium in kickoff send a message? one cleveland browns fan is hoping he will ask other season ticket holders to stay away from their seats after kickoff for the monday night home game versus baltimore. he's sick of the booing and fans leaving in the fourth quarter. the browns are 1 and 6 this season, well on the way for missing the playoffs for the tenth time in 11 cseasons. it's the largest outdoor cocktail party. do the fans remember anything about the game itself? it will be a good thing for the fans as the georgia bulldogs have lost 16 of the 19 in the series between the hated rivals. underdogs number one-ranked florida today in the neutral site game in jacksonville.

nine banks, all part of the major holding company have shut their doors. that brings it total to 115 banks closed by the fed so far this year. an average of ten banks have failed every month in 2009. but that is still nowhere close with the 1989's record high of 534 bank closures, which took place during the savings and loan crisis.

a tanker here stopped leaking oil to san francisco bay when a fuel line ruptured in a fuel transfer. san francisco's mayor said hundreds of gallons of oil have spilled into the bay. officials are telling people not to swim in the bay and to avoid local beaches. the coast guard says it looks like the oil spill was caused by the mechanical failure. it's safe, spooky, and for some, the perfect way to spend halloween. horror movies have some people so hooked, they just can't seem to get enough. so what exactly keeps it fear fanatics coming back for more?

as gerri willis reports, the gotcha fees are everywhere. from cell phones to cable service. to credit cards and banks. to airline travel and hotel stays. experts say the average american is spending close to $1,000 a year extra on hidden fees and surcharges, a nickel here, a dime there. >> that's real money. married couples were talking about $2,000. that's a nice -- that's a nice chunk of change to stock a healthy retirement, pay for a nice vacation, get a head start on school costs. >> bob sullivan is the author of the red tape chronicles. >> almost every transaction now, if you buy a car, buy a house, get a cell phone, the company knows far much more than you do, including -- they know what the real cost is. and when all this confusion of what things cost -- consumers lose. >> reporter: they're losing in a big way. the average fee ranges from less than $1 to $10.

while that may not seem like a lot of money, it adds up. cell phone fees average $9.40 a month, more than $116 a year. cable and satellite fees on average run $9.52 a month totalling $114 a year, every time you fly, $33.44 with a national average of 3 1/2 tickets a year, that totals $102 a year. credit card fees average $7.72 a month, bringing the annual cost to $92. and the average fee incurred for a hotel stay is close to $25, roughly $95 a year per person. bjorn hanson is a professor of the nyu tische center for hospitality. hotels are more creative in the surprise fee. >> hotels collected $1.75 billion on fees and surcharges. some of the fees that surprise guests it most would be an early departure fee, a cancellation

nine banks part of the same holding company have shut their doors. that brings a total of 115 banks closed by the fed so far this year. an average of ten banks have failed every month in 2009. but that is still nowhere close to 1989's record high of 534 bank closures, which took place during the savings & loan crisis. a tanker here has stopped leaking oil in to san francisco bay. the leak started yesterday morning when a fuel line ruptured on a panamanian flight tanker in a fuel transfer. san francisco's mayor says hundreds of gallons of oil have spilled into the bay. officials are telling people not to swim in the bay and to avoid local beaches. the coast guard says it looks like the oil spill was caused by a mechanical failure. anna nicole smith's former boyfriend and two doctors are going on trial. a california judge ruled yesterday there is enough

hey, good morning, it's saturday, i'm natasha curry, thanks for watching hln news and views. a man hunt is underway in cleveland, ohio for this man, 50-year-old anthony seoul. police went to arrest him on charges of murder and rape. when they went into his home, they found two decomposing bodies up stairs and a freshly dug grave in the basement with another body in it. police searched in and around the house found three more bodies. people who live in the neighborhood are worried about who was buried in sowell's home. >> i pray to god it's not my cousin. and if it is my cousin, i'm sorry. >> sowell was convicted for a 1989 rape and served 15 years in prison. one of the stock markets took a dive that we haven't seen in quite a while. all three major indices went down yesterday and the dow had the biggest one-day drop in half a year. the government said that

consumer spending went down in september, the first time in five months. at the same time, personal incomes remain flat. some economists worry the economy could run out of steam if consumers start spending less. president obama is getting more advice as he considers his next move in afghanistan. the president met yesterday with the joint chiefs of staff and other top military advisers. this comes in the deadliest month for u.s. forces there. sources tell cnn each branch of the military got a chance to explain the impact of sending more troops. the army and marine corps expressed concerns it would be tougher to give troops promise time at home with their family. hope is dimming for rescuers looking for survivors from a collision between a coast guard plane and a marine helicopter. nine people were on board the two aircraft. the crash happened overnight thursday off the coast of san diego right after civilian air traffic controllers turned over

communications to military air traffic controllers. in 2004, former vice president dick cheney told a special prosecutor he did not know who leaked the identity of a cia agent to the press. newly released fbi documents show that cheney replied to many questions with i do not recall. the scandal became known as plame gate when plame's identity was leaked to robert novak after her husband criticized the bush administration and its run up to the invasion of iraq. cheney's chief of staff scooter libby was eventually convicted of perjury in the case. a powerful lawmaker is taking a gamble and pushing for a so-called public option in the senate health care bill. now, this week senate majority leader harry reid took his pitch to the internet. this may not be about health care but also about political survival. >> reporter: a call to action. posted on youtube.

california officials say they are going to try to reopen the san francisco oakland bay bridge on monday. but they say they can't guarantee it even though they'll be working the whole weekend to repair it. the bridge was closed on tuesday after three steel pieces fell off of it in the middle of rush hour right into traffic. they crashed right into the lanes and injured one person. the bridge carries about 280,000 vehicles per day. oh, there'll be plenty of costumes and candy to go around tonight. but parents, what do you do with all of that he has chocolate and sugar at the end of the night? >> most of them probably get a couple of pounds of candy. and it's crazy. it's absolutely insane if they are allowed to put all of that inside them. >> one dentist wants your kids to trade in their treats for cash. and it's all for a good cause.

this is tragic, though. this is happen time at last night's pistons thunder game. a group called the spare tires dancing to michael jackson's "thriller." they're pretty good, really. no word on what they have planned for halloween tonight. fishing no longer means the same thing as fishing with a rod and reel. these days fishing is really another way to try to steal your money. but jennifer westhoven is looking out for you. >> well, there's a new scam out there i want you to be careful of. you've heard the headlines about banks failing and that can be pretty scary. well, criminals are going to use your fear to try and steal your sensitive financial information. the fdic is warning you might get an e-mail that it looks innocent, the subject line says check your bank deposit insurance coverage. well, if you see that, don't even open it.

nine banks all part of the same major holding company have shut their doors. that brings the total to 115 banks closed by the fed so far this year. an average of 10 banks have failed every month in 2009. but that is still nowhere close to the -- to 1989's record high of 534 bank closures which took place during the savings and loan crisis. a tanker here has stopped leaking oil into san francisco. the leak started yesterday morning when a fuel line ruptured on a panamanian tanker during a fuel transfer. san francisco's mayor says hundreds of gallons of oil have spilled into the bay. people are not supposed to swim in the bay and avoid local beaches. looks like the oil spill was caused by a mechanical failure. anna nicole smith's former

boyfriend and two doctors are going on trial. a california judge ruled yesterday that there is enough evidence to try them. they're accused of conspireing to illegally give her controlled substances and supplying drugs to an addict. but boyfriend howard stern and the doctors say they didn't know she was addicted and they were trying to help her. they pleaded not guilty. their arraignment is scheduled for december 11th. hey, do you take a really good look at your bills before you pay them? well, if you do, you could find hidden fees that really add up. as gerri willis reports, those gotcha fees are everywhere. >> from cell phones to cable service. to credit cards and banks. to airline travel and hotel stays. experts say the average american is spending close to $1,000 a year extra on hidden fees and surcharges, a nickel here, a dime there.

a month bringing the annual cost to $92. and the average fee incurred for a hotel stay is close to $25, roughly $95 a year per person. bjorn hanson is a professor for hospitality. he says hotels have become more creative in what he calls the surprise fee. >> the hotel industry in 2008 collected about $1.75 billion on fees and surcharges. some of the fees that surprise guests the most would be an early departure fee, a cancellation fee, mini bar restocking charges. luggage or a baggage holding fees. >> reporter: some hotels go as far as charging resort amenity fees for towels. and some urban hotels even charge a daily fee for receiving faxes. experts say the best way to avoid being surprised by hidden fees or surcharges is to ask up front before every transaction what's the final cost i'm going

to pay? according to the national survey cited in our report, consumers had the most success resolving fee complaints with credit card companies and hotels. gerri willis, cnn, new york. three american hikers detained in iran have received their second visit since being arrested. their families say the swiss diplomats spent about 40 minutes with them on thursday. switzerland handled that visit because the u.s. doesn't have diplomatic relations with iran. a senior state department official said the hikers seem nervous and scared but in good physical and psychological health. they crossed iran's border during a hike in northern iraq three months ago. their families say they did it by mistake. it's safe, spooky, and for some, the perfect way to spend halloween. horror movies have some people so hooked they just can't seem to get enough. so what exactly keeps these fear fanatics coming back for more? d
