good morning. why don't we do a time check. i want to make sure if you were supposed to change your clogs, you did. it is now 7:00. if you didn't change them, you're up an hour early. good morning, sunshine. i'm robin meade. the lines for the h1n1 vaccine may ease soon as the drug companies step up production. today, there's new plan to ensure the vaccine is safe for you. a billion dollar ship built with steel from the world trade center, live pictures right now, is sailing toward new york city. look how many boats are alongside it. how first responders and families of the 9/11 victims are paying tribute. i just want to hang on that picture there. you can see the people on board.

so we'll be covering that story as they get closer to new york city. plus, you've heard kids cry planes before, sure. but a mom and her screaming toddler got booted off of their flight. we have your reaction. first, though, starting today, an independent health group will be watching how safe the h1n1 flu vaccine is. they're not expecting problems but they want to reassure people. there's been some worry because vaccines seem to be made so quickly and because there are reports of some people being paralyzed by different swine flu vaccine back in 1976. one pregnant woman with four kids says she is not taking the risk. >> it's side effects, potential down the line. you know, you put something new into your body. you know, people react very differently to different things they put into their body. you know, one person who may be fine, another person may not. >> right now, five drug companies are really cranking out the vaccine. 10 million more doses are expected by friday. so the supply may start meeting

the demand soon. that's a good thing. have you seen the lines? they've been terrible. >> i know how frustrating it is to stand in line for hours and maybe not get what you came for in the first place. that's infuriating. we really want to remind people, though, that there are some people who will likely get very ill and could potentially die. who are in much more priority situations, children's with underlying health conditions and pregnant women. we need them to get to the front of the line. >> now, so far there are no reports of any problems with the vaccine, other than some sore arms and fever. that is routine. it's going to be an emotional morning for the families of the 9/11 attack victims. i was going to tell you, look at these live pictures. they're coming in and out. in about an hour a navy ship built with steel from the world trade center will stop at ground zero. a ceremony for the "uss new

york" will include a 21-gun salute. it will dock for saturday's official commissioning. a suicide bomber blew up outside a bank while people were waiting for their paychecks today. police in pakistan say the explosion killed at least 35 people. it happened about 18 miles from the capital where secretary of state hillary clinton visited last week. the u.n. now says it's pulling out all its nonemergency workers from northwest pakistan. the coast guard says there's no hope of rescuing nine people who plunged into the pacific last week. their coast guard plane and a marine helicopter collided off southern california on thursday night. authorities gave up the search and rescue mission yesterday after 60 hours with no sign of survivors. >> we looked at the time that was involved, we looked at the nature of the collision itself. we exhaustedly searched the area where we would have found them

if there was anybody who could have survived it. you look at the cold water exposure models as far as the time goes. when you put all those pieces together, we no longer believe there's any chance that somebody could still be alive. >> sad to hear. the coast guard will have a memorial on friday. police are trying to identify six women, all found dead at a home in cleveland. the coroner says it appears they were strangled and their body may have been there for weeks, if not months or years. 50-year-old anthony sowell has lived at the home. after serving 15 years for rape. police spotted him walking in his neighborhood saturday and arrested him. >> sigh of relief. the street is now safe again. >> i'm glad he's off the street. >> we're just thankful that they got him. >> well, police found the bodies after they tried to serve a warrant on sowell as part of a different rape investigation. a woman says that sowell attacked her at his home november 22nd. police stopped by earlier that

day for a routine check on the registered sex offender. new this morning hamid karzai will remain the president of afghanistan. election officials just made the announcement after cancelling saturday's presidential runoff. car karzai's victory was pretty much assured because his only challenger quit yesterday. abdullah abdullah said he was worried it would be rigged. the u.n. wants $9 billion to fight the number one killer of children, pneumonia. it hopes to save 5 million kids by 2015. agencies want to vaccinate kids and work on economic development because pneumonia deaths are linked to malnutrition and poverty. one critic says trillions have been spent on economic change with little success. remember the story about a dude who got a dui in his motorized la-z-boy. now police are selling it on

really tapped into the moisture. that's woohy you've seen so muc rain. chicago in towards lower parts of wisconsin, it gets back in towards northern and central illinois. look how spotty the showers are. just widely scattered. that's the way it's going to be for the morning. more showers toward central nebraska, grand island. it's not that heavy yet there either, but if you open up the picture a bit, the xloudz aclou out there. everything moving to the east. it will head in towards detroit, lower parts of the ohio valley. you'll get light rain. we're watching for light rain off the coast of basically new york and pennsylvania. here's what it looks like around jersey. showers are out there. it's a low pressure center off the carolina coastline. the wind is coming in out of the east. you can see the scattered showers there at philadelphia through new york, laguardia right now you are reporting some light rain. you probably get a delay at the airport first part of the day. and that rain will move in towards lower parts of new england. it's not going to be heavy at all. in fact, it's going to be extremely light. pull the picture out just a touch farther and you can see

the frost advisory in place for most of tennessee. temperatures starting out on a cold note. mid to upper 30s nashville, low 30s outside of the big city. cold start in mid-atlantic to the midsouth. >> for the first time people are turning on the heat. one of the largest bank robberies in u.s. history has just been filed. that means the government and you collectively could lose billions. the other huge concern is what it might do to thousands of businesses. spectacular crash at talladega that takes your breath away. how can someone walk away from this? >> right on the hood of the 29 car.

"the san francisco chronicle" reports that some drivers face round-trip commutes of eight hours or more. crews are still working on repairs and safety tests. the bay bridge closed tuesday after 5,000 pounds of metal crashed into rush hour traffic.

we don't know when it's going to reopen. jury selection begins today for a man accused of killing a tv anchor in arkansas. curtis advance is karnlged with the 2000 murder of ann presley, found beaten in her bed and later died. his attorneys say police coerced him into giving a dna sample before his arrest. looking out for you, one person in new hampshire died after eating meat that may be contaminated with e. coli bacteria. now a company is recalling more than half a million pounds of ground beef. jennifer westhoven's here. this is kind of difficult because it's not just under one brand name here. >> yeah. you know, if you've got this in your freezer, a lot of times people put it away, forget about it. people have gotten sick in massachusetts, maine, connecticut, new hampshire. if you want to check about this,

the kind of bankruptcy where they get sold off. they're hoping to survive it and they say they're going to try to keep lending for a little while. monday, maybe you have a business trip coming or starting vacation today. bob's got the travel update. i hope the forecast for the game tonight -- >> yeah, so far so good. i'll tell you, getting low clouds, light rain being reported around the philadelphia metro area. i think they'll get the game in no matter what. new york city metros, looking at light rain around laguardia. it's being reported. in chicago, midway and o'hare, not. the rain is still up there across the lower parts of wisconsin, working through northern illinois. you get the delays first part of the day up there. new york city metro, philadelphia and including newark in there, too, half an hour to hour long delay because of low clouds and light showers hanging in there tough for most of the afternoon. detroit, chicago, low clouds and some light showers. mainly for the morning. 30 minutes to an hour delays. so far, no delays. good news there.

♪ time is sweet >> the democratic house plan for health care reform would mean whopping tax increases on the wealthy. we're talking about 5.5% for people making over 500 grand a year and couples making more than a million. starting in 2011. republicans say that will hurt small business owners. it doesn't look like the senate would approve those taxes either. a sheriff is not giving up on trying to charge inmates for rent, haircuts and medical visit. the massachusetts supreme court will hear an appeal today about it. he started a program in 2002 but a judge struck it down. the sheriffs the fees can teach inmates to accept responsibility and ease taxpayers' burden, but

inmates' attorneys say it's like any legal tax. southwest airlines has apologized for kicking a mom and her toddler off a flight. the crew booted them because of the boy's screams of go plane, go, and i want daddy, drowned out the preflight safety announcement. mom said she was confident the little boy would behave once the plane took off but they never got the chance -- look at the picture. southwest called her, offered her a refund and $300 travel voucher since this happened. >> looks like he was still screaming it, doesn't it? plane, go! we give you news and you give us views. should very have been kicked off or should southwest even have given them a refund and voucher? chris, they should have family flights that way uptight people don't have to listen to children. stephanie says, i believe there is a time and a place for screaming children.

hours, 9 minutes. >> after he finished did he start crying a little bit? >> absolutely. emotional day. the wife and former girlfriend -- i'm sorry, a recent girlfriend of raiders' head coach tom cable claimed he used to beat them. both women say he has anger management issues. he acknowledged in a statement that he struck his wife with an open hand but said it was the only time it happened. his lawyer disputed the fairness of espn's report. nfl is still investigating allegations he hit an assistant coach. lastly on halloween night, this is crazy. a bat got into the at&t center. a bat. the spurs coyote tries to go after it wearing a batman shirt. more on that in a second. ginobi ginobili, watch what he does. swats it in midair, stuns the bat, tries to give it to somebody. later the team says the bat was stunned and flew away. that's a look at sports. there were a couple of big

filibuster. he is an independent. >> it's fascinating and, frankly, troubling it has suddenly become a litmus test. if you're not for government health insurance company you're somehow not a good democrat. if you look at the election last year, the presidential election, the public option was never discussed. this was all about how do we control the increasing costs of health insurance and how do we make health insurance available to people who can't afford it now. those are our goals. >> but president obama's senior adviser says the public option would achieve those goals, plus, cut costs and expand coverage because it would bring competition to private insurers. new this morning, police arrest aid man accuseded of gunning down four people in a north carolina parking lot. investigators say they tracked down marcos gonzalez at a motel in virginia about 40 miles from the crime scene. they say that he shot and killed

four men yesterday outside a tv shop. police are not giving the details, but they do not think it was random. a horrific crash, i mean, crazy looking, at talladega speedway. here is rafer with the video. good morning. >> good morning to you, robin. every year there is a crash at talladega speedway. nascar drawing some criticism. they have inserted measures to try to reduce them but those measures, they say, are to blame, some drivers anyway. this guy here, ryan newman with five laps left, his car flips upside down. this is in slow motion. we're showing it to you. sputters along the track, hits the wall. but it's not done. i mean, he comes sliding down towards the grass in the center of the track. watch now as his car flips over a few more times. it took crews 13 minutes to get him out. they had to cut the roof off. he said it was like being stuck in a tomb and not being able to get out. fortunately for him, he would be

okay. but there was another big crash and a surprise winner. we'll have that video in about ten minutes. >> same track, same race and another big crash? >> uh-huh. >> just a few minute after that. >> glad he was able to walk away. new this morning, hamid karzai will remain the president of afghanistan. election officials said today that there will be no runoff this weekend after karzai's main challenger dropped out of the race yesterday. the u.s. is very concerned about what happens with the government there as president obama's trying to decide whether to send more troops. >> the president has said consistently is he is going through a very rigorous process before he puts our men and women in harm's way. he wants to make absolutely sure he has a strategy. this isn't just a matter of how many troops to send over. all of that is a very important component. we have to look at what's going on on the ground, what our allies are doing, the state of the government in afghanistan. >> well, allegations voter fraud in afghanistan have not helped either.

tile natural. feel better. if you are doing any travel today we have a couple areas of concern but not as bad as last week. two areas of low pressure. one off the coast, another one circulating with some clouds right over the northern part of the great lakes. you see the cold front justing down through chicago with rain at o'hare. midway, you're dry. the first area, around the carolina outer banks. here's your low. want clouds thrown back in towards north and central parts of south carolina. that's where you have most of the cloud cover. a little fog out there when you get in towards northern georgia. temperatures cooling down quickly but that should burn off quickly. the mid-atlantic and northeast, light rain showers reported outside of philadelphia, central jersey. all of the blue, most of that is hitting the ground. new york city metro and you're reporting rain at laguardia and newark but no rain at jfk. it's going to be like that, scattered light showers but enough to slow you down at the airport, especially this morning as the clouds continue to filter in off the atlantic. tennessee, frost advisories out there.

♪ back to the street where we begin ♪ ♪ feeling as good as loves can ♪ >> i like them. dick cheney reportedly told the fbi, i don't recall when asked about how cia agent valerie plame was outed. the 2004 interviews included in some newly released documents. remember, plame's husband was critical of the bush administration. cheney's chief of staff, scooter libby, was convicted of lying about the leak. president bush computed his sentence. about 300,000 people converged on atlanta over the weekend for one of the largest gay pride festivals in the country. it's usually held in the summer but pushed back to halloween this year. plenty of people showed up in costume for the parade yesterday. the grand marshal was the atlanta police department's liaison for lesbian, gay, transsexual and transgender community. this just in. good news about the financial health of the only big u.s.

automaker that didn't get bailed out. our money expert jennifer westhoven is here. so ford? >> yeah, we're talking about ford. their results just came in a few minutes ago. we were looking through the news release. they made about $1 billion in profit in the last three months. from the numbers teasing out, they say they also made money here at home, in north america. that's been very rare for any of the detroit companies. it was the first time ford did that in about four years. now, look, a lot of it probably has to do with the cash for clunkers program, right? that helped sales of the ford focus and ford escape but fords they think they'll be fine even without the program and they are predicting that ford will be solidly profitable in 2011. we'll watch. that would be good news, certainly, for detroit and the country. meanwhile, not all of detroit doing well. chrysler, another round of shrinking. it's buying out another 23,000 workers. chrysler says this week they'll

lay out a five-year plan to get back to profitability. they're out of bankruptcy but still in a lot of trouble there. so thousands of chrysler workers will have a big choice to make over the next week, sitting at the kitchen tables and bars, trying to decide, are they going to take a buyout and give up their job or keep the job and there's always still a risk that you could get laid off and miss out on all that money. that's a big deal. the white house, signaling, of course, it cares about the $1.4 trillion deficit is what they're trying to say but before they focus there, they want to try to get a heart beat in the economy. meaning, growth. >> unemployment is worse than almost anybody expected, but growth is back a little more quickly, a little stronger than people thought and growth is necessary. with growth jobs will come but growth has to come first. >> timothy geithner on nbc "meet the press." we've been following the home buyer credit, still happening in washington, robin. not law yet but we'll keep you

all right. if you have a flex spending account for medical bills, you could be hit by the health care plan. congressional democrats want to cap those tax-free accounts at 2500 bucks a year. right now most companies cap them at 5,000 bucks. the cap would mean more than $13 billion in tax revenue. insurance companies, some unions and others say it's too hard on the mid-middle class. southwest airlines has apologized for kicking a mom and a toddler off of a flight. the crew booted him because the boy was screaming, go, plane, go! and, i want daddy! it drowned out the preflight safety announcement. the mom said she was confident the boy would behave when the

people. it happened about 18 miles from the capital. secretary of state hillary clinton visited last week. the u.n. now says it is pulling out all its nonemergency workers from northwest pakistan. police are trying to identify six women all found dead at a home in cleveland. the coroner says it appears that they were strangled and their bodies may have been there for weeks if not months or years. 50-year-old anthony sowell has lived at the home since 2005 after serving 15 years for rape. police spotted him walking in the neighborhood saturday and arrested him. >> a sigh of relief. i said, the street is now safe again. >> i'm glad he's off the street. >> we're just thankful that they got him. >> police found the bodies after they tried to serve a warrant on sowell as part of a different rape investigation. a woman says that sowell attacked her at his home september 22nd. police had stopped by earlier that day for a check on the registered sex offender. new this morning, hamid

karzai will keep his presidency in afghanistan. it was officially announced this morning. it comes less than a week before a runoff election was supposed to happen. election officials canceled that after karzai's challenger bowed out sunday, saying the whole process was corrupt. new this morning, police arrested a man accused of gunning down four people in a north carolina parking lot. investigators say they tracked down marcos gonzalez at a motel in virginia about 40 miles from the scene. they say he shot and killed four men yesterday outside a tv shop. police are not giving details, but they do not think that it was random. some morning commutes may be hours longer. san francisco's bay bridge is still closed. the san francisco chronicle reports that some drivers face round-trip commutes of eight hours or more. this is a live picture. i see no lights there. you know, nobody moving across the bridge. crews are still working on the repair and safety tests. the bay bridge closed tuesday

a big bankruptcy to tell you about this morning. cit. one of the biggest bankruptcies in u.s. history. you may be thinking, what is cit? they're really a very huge behind the scenes lender. think of them as like a bank for more than a million small and medium-sized companies who depend on cit to keep their lending smooth and flowing. cit, by the way, had borrowed more than $2 billion of your money, taxpayer money, bailout money. we may never see that again. it does hope to try and keep lending to survive this bankruptcy. just a quick one, stocks this morn wk we'll be watching them very closely later on after a wild end to the week last week. thursday a huge rally, about 200 points. then friday, plummeted about 250 for the dow jones industrial average. so we're well below the 10,000 mark now. well, 9,700. the big deal this week is going to be the latest numbers on the job market. the big ones that come out on

you can see the sparks flying as the car slides down towards the grass in the center of the track. the car then flipped over a few times. it took crews 13 minutes to get newman out of the car. they had to cut off the roof. he said it was like being stuck in a tomb and not being able to get out. no nascar's credit, amazingly, he was okay. that's a real testament to how safe the cars are. there was another big crash and surprise winner. we're going to have that for you in ten minutes. >> i'm so glad he was able to walk away. a sheriff is not giving up trying to charge inmates for rent, haircuts and medical visits. the massachusetts supreme court will hear an appeal about this. he started a program in 2002. a judge struck it down. the sheriff says fees can teach the inmates to accept responsibility and ease taxpayers' burden. the inmates attorneys say it's like an illegal tax. emergency officials in louisiana are telling people in the bossier city to evacuate.

that. good morning. >> this is certainly i think good news for ford just in general that we hear that a major company from detroit, one of the automakers is doing a lot better. ford motor baking about $1 billion in profits in the latest quarter. looks just inside their numbers, too, they even made money here at home in north america. that is rare. that's for the first time in about four years. obviously, part of that is because of the cash for clunkers program. that particularly helped the ford escape, ford focus. the company says, though, even without the cash for clunkers, since it's over now, they say that by 2011 they will be solidly profitable around then. we'll watch. a lot of people would be happy to see that. travel trends. this is worth it if you're pouring your himilk in your cofe or something. take a look at this video. the biggest cruiseship in the world. it's 20 stories. it's going under a bridge right now, robin. they have less than two feet of

a ship built from the steel of the world trade center is in new york city. the "uss new york" was there this morning where victims' families held a ceremony. the ship is going to dock later today to prepare for saturday's official commissioning. some people have been worrying about how safe the h1n1 flu vaccine is. starting today, a health group is going to watch how it's working. they don't expect problems. one pregnant woman says she's not taking the risk. >> it's side effects, it's potential down the line. something you into your body and people react very differently to things. one person who may be fine, for another person, it may not. >> right now, five drug companies are really cranking out the vaccine.

it was very tough for them to watch this. the former wife and recent girlfriend of raider's coach claimed he used to beat them. in an interview, they say cable has issues. he did strike his wife with an open hand, his lawyer talked about the unfairness of the report. lastly, on halloween night, a bat got into the at&t center in the spurs-kings game. how does a bat get into the stadium? he needed no net. swats it. stuns the bat. the bat would later be released according to the team. they said they did not kill it. it was just stunned. there were a couple of big crashes at talladega speedway.

jury selection begins today for a man accused of killing a tv anchor in arkansas. he's charged with the 2008 murder of ann pressley. vance has pleaded not guilty to all charges. joe lieberman says he'll do anything he can to stop a health care bill that included a public option. yesterday, he argued that kind of legislation will be worse than not getting a health care bill at all. now, a democratic proposal with a public option is expected soon. democrats need his support to avoid a republican filibuster. he's an independent. >> it's fascinating and frankly troubling, that it has suddenly become a litmus test if you're not for government health insurance company, you're somehow not a good democrat. if you look at the election last year, the presidential election, the public option was never
