window. my producer had to kind of focus me there. but above the window, you can see the damage from the collision with those birds. that collision actually caused a pressure change, and then they had to come right back to sky harbor airport there in phoenix. goodness, gracious. nobody was hurt in all this, but obviously, the plane is damaged so they had to make a landing as soon as possible, and everybody is okay. you can see the damage there. that birds can do. investigators in florida's panhandle need your help. they're looking for a 7-month-old girl, she disappeared, may in danger. the washington county sheriff's office says shannon lee diedrich vanished, and a statewide alert was issued yesterday. her parents reported her missing. the sheriff says nothing indicates she was abducted, but the sheriff went on to say this, quote, she didn't crawl or walk away. this child is 2 feet tall, weighs 11 pounds, has brown hair and blue eyes.

one of the biggest lenders to small and medium-size businesses has filed for bankruptcy. for more on what that means, let's check in with cnnmoney.com's poppy harlow in new york. most people, poppy, when i put this on my facebook page, i put cit, and they thought i left off the i. they don't know what this is. >> right. let's be clear. this is not citigroup, it's cit, a lender. most people don't have day to day interaction with this company, that's why they don't know what it is. maybe today. this marks the fifth largest bankruptcy in u.s. history. let's be clear. it is a chapter 11. that means it's a reorganization of the company, not a liquidation, like we saw with lehman brothers. but it's big. i mean, they loan to about 1 million small businesses across 30 different industries, a number of retailers rely on the funding from cit to make sure their goods hit the shelves so customers can buy them. cit says they've got 90 million employees that work at the businesses that operate on their

loans. so this is a major lender in the u.s. here is a prime example. dunkin' donuts. you probably see these around your neighborhood. they expanded greatly a few years ago, and went to cit to get the loans to fund the commercial real estate to franchise those new locations. what we're hearing from cit, despite this bankruptcy, they are going to continue as normal, or at least as normal as things can be. they say they will keep lending. richelle, that's really what is still to be seen. and that's not going to be seen for a while. what impact does this really have on u.s. businesses need to go get loans. that's what we'll be watching really closely, richelle. >> we often here, and i know this is tough for people to die just. we often hear bankruptcy can be a good thing. might that be the case here? >> yeah, i think that's a great point. the argument is being made this shows the capitalist system might be working, governments can allow a big company like cit to go bankrupt without shaking the entire financial system. what happened here was that cit went back to the government in

july, and asked for more t.a.r.p. money. they were rejected. this is after the company got $2.3 billion in taxpayer-funded bailout last december. the down side of this, very, very unlikely that we the taxpayers will see any of that money back. the treasury saying today, recovery of those funds will be minimal. this marks the first loss under the bailout program. that is important. but what is also interesting is, compare this to gmac, the auto financing company. they're reportedly looking for more t.a.r.p. money. a lot of people think they're going to get it. why them and not cit? the government already owns 35% of g mac, some people argue because it fuels auto sales, because that supports a huge supply chain. that it is more critical to the overall health of the system, than, say, cit. that is for you to decide on your own. we obviously know where the government stands. and people are kind of outraged over this. they're weighing in on cnnmoney.com. i want you to, too. this is one of our top stories,

if that happens, up to 4,000 people could be trapped. water started spilling from a nearby bayou over the weekend, and some homes are already flooded. a leaking oil rig is on fire. amazing pictures there. it burst into flames when workers tried to plug a leak by pumping mud into a well casing. the oil leak started about ten weeks ago off the northwestern coast of australia. environmentsis environmentsists it could turn into a catastrophe. >> we have already seen 25,000 barrels of oil spewed into the ocean, and with worried this fire will add to the toxic cocktail. >> the nation says thousands of dead fish drifted near its coast last week. the rig operating company says it's unclear how the fire started. australia's government will be investigating of . this week marks the one-year anniversary of president obama's historic election, and what matters partnership in "essence"

a situation at phoenix at sky harbor airport. the situation was pretty scary. this is what happened. a bird strike forced a delta

anna nicole smith drug case, richelle. and what it shows is, anna nicole smith at a birthday party in 2006, a little girl is painting her face like a clown, and an aseems to be in a complete stuper. her friend, her boyfriend, howard k. stern is videotaping the entire thing. an aa is sitting there clearly visibly pregnant and at one point says she is not pregnant, but has gas. a lot of confusion. take a look. >> your baby is down there. >> baby down there. >> that one. >> i think i just have a little gas. i think i just -- i think i'm having some gas trouble. >> and you hear during the tape, the little girl actually trying to talk some sense into her and into howard. it's very, very sad. and to me, it looks like anna nicole, her eyes, like she is just pleaded for help. howard k. stern, just kind of encouraging this behavior.

and the fact, richelle, that this little girl was exposed to this tape of behavior, to me, is reprehensible. now, i say all of that, but there are other observations out there. some people feel that anna was acting the entire time. howard was directing. that they were reality tv stars, and that this tape could be misleading in the drug case. >> okay. okay. maybe a different interpretation of it. regardless, what is the status of this drug case so far? >> howard k. stern, doctor cindy were ordered on friday to all stand trial. howard faces 11 felony counts, the other two face six counts. they're out on bond. there is an aarraignment december 11th. we will have more details tonight on "showbiz tonight." plus, we're going to have jon begging kate for forgiveness. and, you know, he's not the only one pouring his heart out. why are is kate crying in a brand-new tv interview? now. another situation we're following for you. pretty impressive pictures, unless you're a city official who has to deal with this. a water main break in the los angeles area, specifically at the intersection of van nuys, everywhere, thousands of gallons of water pouring into the streets. no reports of injuries or damage to buildings yet. emergency crews are on the scene, trying to get this situation under control. we'll keep you posted. again, amazing pictures, but not if you are the folks that have to deal with that. or have to take a detour because of that. the man accused of fatally shooting four men in mountain ai airy, north carolina yesterday is now in custody. his name is mark as sha she's gonzalez. he was arrested with no problems at a motel, in henry county, virginia. the town's police chief doesn't believe the shooting was a

random act. mt. airy is 100 miles north of charlotte and the inspiration for mayberry and "the andy griffith show." the coroner says it could take days, maybe weeks, to identify the bodies of six women found at the home of a registered sex offender in cleveland. at least five of them were apparently strangled. the sixth body is too decomposed to make a determination right now. their bodies may have been there for weeks, months, maybe years. investigators are now trying to get a warrant to take dna samples from the suspect. 50-year-old anthony sowell served 15 years for rape before moving into that house in 2005. investigators also want to look into his residential history to see if there may be more victims. police spotted him walking in his neighborhood saturday, and they arrested him. >> a sigh of relief. i said, the street is now safe

again. >> i'm glad he's off the street. >> and we're just thankful that they got him. >> police found the bodies during an investigation into separate rape allegations. a woman says he attacked her in that house back on september 22nd. police had stopped by earlier that day for a routine check, because, again, he is a registered sex offender. a tragic story out of california. investigators say they found the body of a missing 4-year-old boy in a dryer. and they discovered it in his neighbor's home saturday, and arrested a 14-year-old boy who lives there. the fresno county sheriff says he'll be charged with murder. so far, investigators are not saying anything about a motive. >> you don't know who is actually your neighbors, you know? you think you know them, but you actually don't. so now it's like you're afraid to let your children, you know, out in the streets, because you can't trust anybody. >> neighbors also say the suspect's mom was babysitting the victim. it's official. hamid karzai, the current president of afghanistan, is not

going anywhere, is going to be serving another term in office. afghan electoral officials today declared him the winner of the country's highly contested presidential election that happened way back in august. officials also called off a runoff election that was supposed to happen saturday. karzai's only opponent, abdullah abdullah dropped out of the race yesterday. he said he didn't believe this process would be fair. earlier today, the white house commented on the re-election of president karzai. >> president karzai has been declared the winner of the afghan election, and will head the next government of afghanistan. so obviously, he's the legitimate leader of the country. obviously, what we'll begin now that we know the government that will lead afghanistan for the next five years, continue conversations about governance, civil society, and corruption

going forward to ensure that we have credible partner in our efforts to help secure the country. >> this morning, u.n. secretary general ban ki-moon arrived in kabul to meet with karzai and his former challenger. president obama is still weighing the pros and cons of sending more u.s. troops to fight in afghanistan. top administration officials are pledging to work with president karzai. president obama may unveil his war strategy for afghanistan within the next few weeks. 59 u.s. troops were killed in afghanistan during october. that is the highest monthly toll since the war began eight years ago. a new navy assault ship built with steel from the world trade center, and is now in new york city. there it is right there. the uss new york stopped near ground zero today. first responders and families of september 11th victims held a ceremony that included a 21-gun salute. the bow of that billion-dollar ship contained 7.5 tons of steel

children too young to even get into a pg-13 movie are lying about their ages to get on facebook and myspace. young kids on these grown-up sites. it sounds like a serious concern. is it, though? cnn.com is asking that question today, and dot com live's reggie akey is here with more. i would think it's a serious concern. >> it is for a lot of parents, because they're trying to figure out how to monitor their kids, but not restrict them, and not, of course, student their growth when it comes to communication and when it comes to computers. right now, myspace and facebook, they have limits. you have to be 13 years old to be a part of the site. now, that's the official rule. but a lot of kids get around that. let's face it. many 13 year olds are much more computer-savvy than they're parents are, so parents are struggling what they should do about this. what's the concern? there is a concern kids could develop internet addictions or

stunt their social development or be exposed to child predators, of course. but many psychologists and researchers counter that and say that while those fears certainly have a place, that they're overblown, generally. one of the psychologists notes that children have spent their entire life in the internet age and are better than adults at integrating the online world with the real world. and add that most young teens are savvy enough to know who to avoid when they're on the net. in fact, one neuro science weighed in had saying these technologies -- he's kind of against kids using these technologies, saying that it infantlizes the brain to children who are attracted to buzzing noises and bright lights. >> sounds like some adults i know. >> okay. i guess i'll include myself in that group. so some experts are saying, you know, what the harm is overblown. some are saying it's treating them younger than they really are. i don't have kids. i have a 4-year-old dog, and i will tell you, he has his own twitter account. >> o, reg.

>> so there you go. >> i guess i don't have kids either, but just from the reporting and having cousins, this is just one more thing that parents have to monitor. >> you've got to have their passwor passwords. but let's face it, the kids can create their own log-ins. >> those kids. i tell you. something else that's getting a the love attention, cutting-edge medical technology. this is the good stuff. >> this is interesting. if most people get a scrape or a cut or something, it just heals itself over time. but there are some people with certain medical conditions, or if they have a large enough gash in their skin, that they need to turn to something else. and i think this is really cool. skin grafts, basically. they're created from very unlikely places. we're talking about collagen. that's what scientists are extracting. collagen, of course, makes up 75% of the skin. patient's own skin is induced to grow even more by using these collagen grafts. so in other words, the grafts

impressive pictures. this is a train derailment that happened in suburban chicago over the weekend. it's coming from our i-reporters. a freight train derailed and hit a second train in northbrook yesterday. nobody has hurt. but this was taken by our i-reporter brian bell. 17 cars of the canadian pacific railway train jumped the tracks. train cars fell off the bridge, and rail cars came within feet of two permanently mounted liquid propane tanks behind the strip mal. so the strip mall was evacuated as a precautionary measure. bell says a friend of his was the one who told him about the derailment, and he went there and took these pictures shortly after the incident. and we appreciate it. we appreciate all of our i-reporters. if you have breaking news or something happening in your part of the world, send it to us. it's hard to believe anyone survived this, but michael williams did. a small tornado sent the steeple

work crews are cleaning up a major oil spill in it san francisco bay. wildlife experts have picked up 30 birds covered with oil, and transferred them to a wildlife recovery center. the oil from the ship "dubai star" leaked into the bay friday morning. california's fish and game department suspended fishing and shellfish harvesting between the san francisco oakland bay bridge

and the san mateo bridge until the oil is removed. and the san francisco oakland bay bridge is open again. a california state transportation spokesperson says final inspections on repairs were completed this morning. >> the safety has been our priority. we have taken our time to make sure that we have gotten the exact alignment that we want, that all the steel is in place that we want, that there is no metal on metal connection. and we've gone beyond that to ensure if anything were to happen again, these pieces won't fall by doing stronger structural welds, by tying these pieces off. so this is a safer fix related to potential failure caused by fatigue. >> the "san francisco chronicle" reports some drivers have faced a commute of eight hours or more, round-trip. can you imagine? the bay bridge closed tuesday after 5,000 pounds of metal crashed right during rush hour traffic. 280,000 cars cross that bridge

westernized. he was booked over the weekend in arizona on two charges of aggravated assault. after the alleged hit and run he drove his jeep across the mexican border and abandon it there. then made his way to mexico city. boarded a transatlantic flight to london. and after arriving there authorities denied him entry into the country and notified the u.s. he was arrested once he got back on american soil. grocery brand fair bank farms is recalling more than a half million pounds of ground beef due to fears of possible e. coli contamination. the manufacture stopped 546,000 pounds up and down the east coast to stores like trader joes. b.j.'s giant and others. now the centers for disease control is warning the public that two deaths and dozens of illnesses may be linked to potentially contaminated meat. emergency officials are telling people in louisiana to get out while they still can. water is overflowing a levy.

and the levy could breach. some homes are already flooded. workers able to shut down a water main break in california. this is what it looked like at the height of the break. thousands of gallons poured into the streets. shut down the intersection. the pipe is used to remove recycled water. finally san francisco bay bridge is open to traffic. will the repairs take?

the san francisco oakland bay bridge is open again. the california state transportation spokesman said final inspections on repairs were completed this morning. >> the safety has been our priority. we have taken our time to make sure that we have gotten the exact alignment that we want. that all the steel is in place

that we want. will is no metal-on-metal connection. we've gone beyond that to ensure that anything were to happen these pieces won't fall by doing stronger structural welds, by tying the pieces on. this is a safe fix related to potential failure caused by fatig fatigue. >> drivers faced an eight-hour or greater commute round trip. the bay bridge closed tuesday after 5,000 pounds of metal crushed into rush hour traffic. 280,000 cars drive the bridge every day. if you get behind the wheel don't let your thumbs do the talking. new york's law prohibits the use of mobile devices for reading, typing and sending messages while driving. the u.k. is making it a major criminal offense. the court just sentence ad distracted driver to 21 months in a high security women's prison. she was texting when she crashed

into a car that had broken down. a woman inside was killed. we've been asking your thoughts about texting behind the wheel in general. got a couple of callers. missy in atlanta. what do you think? >> caller: i think we need to send a strong message. much like canada. i would suggest 72 hours in jail. at least 40 to 80 hours of community service. picking up trash on a secondary road. and in downtown greater metropolitan areas and a six month license suspension. these are not just kids. these are business people on the way to work, on the way home. i have come so close to being hit. if your message is that important you need to pull over. it's just not fair to the public. you cannot pu put a price on a life. once it's gone it's gone. >> license suspension may be the biggest wake-up call of all. a lot of people need that

license. >> caller: then they can take public transportation. >> exactly. rachel up next in virginia. rachel, how you doing? >> caller: my husband and i have chosen not to own cell phones. i think the penalty needs to this be a little bit different. get the $150 fine. on your second offense i think the police should confiscate the phone right then and there. people are obsessed with their phones. i think it's a privilege. it is not a right. i've seen how crazy friends get just misplacing the phone. if you lose your phone then and there you have to go through the monetary trouble of having to get a new phone, get all the new numbers. once the police have the great new phones they can be used and donated to domestic violence shelters. they can be used for all kinds of things. people will drive on a suspended license but they'll think twice texting on the brand new phone. >> have you had a close call

found in the home of a convicted rapist. they're looking at missing persons cases. they're trying to match i.d.s. the suspect is 50-year-old anthony sowell who is in custody. this is one of the issues jane velez-mitchell is going to tackle. what disturbs you most about the case? the fact that this guy was at large at all? >> yes, chuck. you're right on the money. this guy should not have been roaming the streets at all. back in 1989 he raped a woman. he was convicted. he served 15 years. then out on the street in 2005. now women are coming forward

saying, hey, he attacked me. i'm just happy to be alive to tell you about it. apparently one woman he offered her a beer. she said no. he punched her in the face, dragged her into the house. he was arrested for rape, kidnapping, et cetera. the case never went to court. why not? that is what we're going to be examining tonighting on "issues" beginning at 7:00 eastern. obviously being a convicted rapist he was a registered sex offender. the cops did visit him regularly. how comb they didn't notice the stench? they visited, sheriff deputies on september 22nd according to published reports. the neighbors were saying the stench was going on for months. even though they weren't allowed inside. apparently all you had to do to walk down the block. >> the neighbors noticed the stench? >> yes, for months. they said maybe it was the sausage place down the block or

maybe the fact that he picked up scrap metal. they had their excuses. but, cops, boy, that should have been obviously a red flag. >> we don't know the i.d.s of the victims to know how they got in contact with him, anything like that? >> no, but we know from his m.o. that he allegedly preyed on those closest to him. so they are trying to match up these missing women with women who have disappeared in the missing vicinity. a number of women who have been missing. >> what's the cause of dit? >> apparently they were all strangled. they're all female. they're all believed to be african-american. what's interesting is he had said that their stepmother was letting him stay at the house and he had to put her in a nursing home. last i head they're trying to

american challenger. three american hikers are said to be in good shape, according to swiss diplomats who paid their second visit to the trio. the hikers were taken into custody in july. they have been in a prison in tehran ever since. his brother spoke to our sister network, cnn, about the conditions under which his brother and the others are being hel held. >> we continue to be told the physical conditions are adequate. they're okay. they're not mistreated in any way. it's good to hear. it gives us comfort. it's reassuring. but at the same time we're concerned that they probably feel very lonely, very cut off from the outside world. >> iranian authorities charged the three hikers with illegally entering the country. the family said they accidentally crossed into iran at an unmarked border. some people, many people, have been worrying about how safe the h1n1 flu is.

kurty is charged with last year's rape and murder of anne pressly. she was found beaten in her bead and died days later from her injuries. vance has pleaded not guilty. more than 60 school districts are using socioeconomic status as a factor in where students attend school. a 2007 supreme court decision limited a school's ability to put them in solely on race. supporters say students for poor households will be spread throughout the school district, not concentrated in one school, and they say studies show low income students do better a middle class schools. opponents say long bus rides harm children and the distance keeps parents from being involved at school. plus, some parents buy their homes based on their neighborhood school. and oppose their kids being bussed elsewhere. one of the biggest lenders

to small and medium sized businesses has filed for bankruptcy. for more on what it could mean to you and me, let's check in with poppy harlow in new york. a lot of people have never heard of cit. tell us about this company. >> you're exactly right. they don't have interaction with it every daf. this is a huge lender to a lot of retailers. a lot of small and medium sized businesses in the country to fund their day-to-day operations. that's why this marks the fifth largest in us history. it's a big company. look on your screen. the biggest small business lender out there in the country. a million customers across 30 different industries. cit also, chuck, says 90 million employees work at the businesses. they get a lot of their loans from cit. here's a prime example. that brand wanted to expand a few years ago. they went to cit to get the loans for that commercial real estate to expand the franchise.

one prime example. what we hear from cit on the news that broke sunday night, chuck, is that they say they insist despite this bankruptcy filing it's going to belending. that's still to be seen, because what we have seen at cit is as the company has struggled, their lending has fallen drat matically, chuck, over the last five years. >> how could they say the lending is a good thing? >> it could be because it shows us the capitalist system may be working. they can allow a big company to file bankruptcy and hopefully reemerge without another bailout. we saw cit went to the government in july, asked for more bailout money, more tae t.a.r.p. money in december, asked for more in july. what this could signal to us is

ruling the statute of limitations had expired. the supreme court's decision today left that ruling in place. it is official. car -- karzai, the current prime minist ministe minister. his sole opponent abdul la abdul la drocpped out of the race yesterday because he didn't believe it could be fair. he met with karzai and a former challanger. this is built from steel at the world trade center. first responders and families from september 11 victims held a

ceremony. it included a 21-gun salute. the bow of this ship contains 7.5 tons of steel from the fallen towers. the ship will be officially commissioned on saturday. in just a few hours we will honor the election of barack obama. what has changed since he took office?

this week marks the one-year anniversary of a historic election, the first time an african-american was elected president of the united states. all week long in our what matters partnership with essence magazine, we're taking a special look at life for black men since president obama took office. does having a black president really affect their day-to-day lives? this week i sit down with some prominent male leaders in the african-american community and pose that question.

today meet dr. boyce watkins, professor at syracuse university, and we're going to ask him whether he thinks life has changed for black men in the last year. >> many black men were inspired by barack obama's achievement. in some ways, though, life became more difficult because with the election of president obama, a lot of people began to think we live in this post-racial america. that's a little bit silly. that's almost as silly as saying we had a post-racial america in 1937 when joel lewis became the heavyweight champion of the world. the truth of the matter is there's always been space for the magic black man or the chosen one, even when the rest of us still sort of have to muddle along and struggle along. so in some ways, he has certainly opened some doors that weren't open before, but in many ways you make a trade-off when some doors get shut while others open.

>> the rates as of september 2009, for black men, it is over 15%. talk about that gap. >> it's not even reflective of the worst areas. you've got areas like buffalo, new york and others, and it's much higher. these numbers are not reflective of reality for many black men. if you look across the board, you will find that to some extent, brlack men have been th roe roechz of america. we're the ones most likely to be incarcerated, we're the ones most likely to be unemployed, we're most likely to be put in special education. you're going to see these ugly numbers, and the sad reality is when the black man goes down, black america goes down. because black men are the heads

down on the side of the road and hit another car. the woman in that car was killed. aaron is calling us from ohio. all right, aaron, what is your take on this? >> i feel there should be a ban on it, or a fine on it in some cases. i feel like if you can memorize the keys, you only have to look down at the screen, and therefore you're not going to be a distracted driver. but those who can't memorize or function and concentrate on the road should be fined, but i don't think there should be a fine for people who actually know what they're doing. >> so you think there are certain cases where people are good enough at texting and driving that they should get a pass at it? >> i do. like, when i was driving, i memorized the keys. >> what if someone says, i'm a good enough drunk driver at .12, it's just the other guy that can't drive drunk.

it's kind of the same thing. >> it is. i was going to say, i think it should be a case by case. >> okay. all right. aaron, thank you for your call. i appreciate it. i have a former police officer named dave who is also calling us from ohio. dave, what's your take? >> yes, ma'am. i believe that there should be sanctions put in for this. the sanction that i would recommend would be taking somebody's car -- >> wow. >> -- and clubbing it for just five days in their garage. and the second penalty for this should be $1,000 fine and a five-day sentence in jail. because this is a dangerous thing all over the country. and i've been almost in a wreck myself by somebody texting. >> because somebody else wasn't paying attention. let me ask you this, dave. we've had some people who have called and left facebook messages today that try to point the finger at police officers. this is what they said.

they say, hey, i've seen police officers on the phone or on computers while they were driving and i've really tried to challenge them and say, you mean to tell me you've seen a police officer on their laptop while driving, and they kind of seem to back off. do you see police officers on the laptop driving at the same time? does that sound kind of henky to you? >> yes, it does, because they're just doing their job. >> i assume they're on the side of the road and not actually driving while they're on their laptop. >> yes, they're on the side of the road. if i get a phone call, i pull over to the side of the road. i don't talk while driving. it's too dangerous. >> dave thinks there's no in between. he wants to take your car, people. he's saying this is serious stuff. you feel very passionate about it and you've shared a lot of personal stories. thanks for your e-mails and
