california's inspector general will release the results of a two-month investigation of phillip garrido's parole. he was under federal parole when jaycee dugard was kidnapped in 1991. he and his wife pleaded not guilty in the dugard case. of course, she has been reunited with her family. the chairman of the republican party isn't -- insists he is not gloating here, admits he is smiling. the gop won elections for governor in two states taking both seats away from democrats. a new york congressional seat in republican hands for a century is not so any longer. so let's break this down for you. former u.s. attorney chris christie is the first republican to win a statewide new jersey race in a decade. incumbent democrat jon corzine spent twice as much as christie. also virginia has a new

yesterday. what is the next stem for police in cleveland. on the phone is swhoun knows about murder investigations. detective lieutenant steve rogers with the nutley, new jersey police department. thank you for being with us. >> you're welcome. >> this is such a gruesome story. there have been bodies all over this house n the basement, on the third floor n the back yard. besides bodies, from an investigative standpoint, what might the investigators be looking for? >> well i'm sure they are looking for videotapes. unfortunately, a lot of these serial killers do film or tape these gruesome murders. that will be a major piece of evidence if they find that. additionally they will collaborate with police departments throughout the country because there are a number of cold cases that will be reopened and missing person reports reviewed once again. >> let me ask you, too, because

i think one of the glaring questions here is what took police so long when you're talking about at least ten decomposing bodies, to get to this house and discover them? >> well, the police chief answered that question i believe in his news conference. there were very few, i believe one or two calls to the area or to that house regarding a disturbance and one incident regarding that smell that the police were notified about. i will admit to you this, perhaps they have to change their rules down there with regard to checking on sex predators. the sheriff's department did follow their guidelines and go there one time. that has to be relooked at. >> okay. one of the things we've noticed is when some of those folks talk to the media, some of the investigators, they are really emotional. this has been described as one of the deadliest crime scenes in cleveland history. how intense a toll does this

take on investigators in general? >> oh, tremendous toll. i could tell you from the experiences i've had, you are not going to be able to sleep for a long time. many officers new to this type of investigation, they are going to have to go to counseling. it is horrific. it is impossible to describe unless you are in the shoes of a law enforcement officer. >> i don't know that i would want to wrap my brain about what it is they are seeing and going through. you mentioned cold cases. when you say, i mean, we know this man has been living in this house since 2005. how expansive will that investigation be in terms of opening up cold cases you said around the country? >> well, yeah. i'll tell you why i'm saying that. i understand he had the ability to travel. he had a lot of mobility. he could have visited places we are unaware of four or five years ago. at least when he got out of prison. the other issue is he had a computer and he obviously

and we'll bring it to you if that happens. investigators think three dickinson state university softball players made the deadly mistake of driving straight into a farm pond in the dark. no foul play is suspected in the deaths of the three women. the bodies of the women and neufeld's dog were found in the submerged suv. it was found in ten feet of water. signals from the last desperate calls led investigators to that pond on private property. a college student is allegedly beaten to death by his roommate. days after his death his parents were slapped with a bill for $29,000 by the hospital that treated him.

days after a california state student was found beaten in his dorm room and died his parents got a shock when they opened their mail. they got a $29,000 bill from the hospital even though their son was insured. along with the bill, here is the thing, a detailed letter explaining doctors' efforts to revive their son. that forced them to relive their loss. >> barely enough energy to finish your sentences, having to sit down and deal with something like this out of the blue is extremely difficult. >> i honestly don't think that there's any civilized country anywhere in the world that would allow parents of a murdered boy to receive a bill like this and a letter like this.

well, the sowell case is an issue jane velez-mitchell is looking into and has been for days. lots of questions about why the bodies were never found even thee he was checked in on consistently because he was a convicted rapist. what impact is this having on investigators? >> you just heard one of the investigators talking about this, chuck. this has to be emotionally overwhelming. imagine you're in that house, dealing just with the stench. the stench of death that neighbors said was overpowering from a distance. you're in there looking for more bodies and you've already found ten plus a skull sitting in a bucket in the basement. these investigators, incredible professionals that they are, have dealt with pretty gruesome crimes. we know some pretty hideous crimes have come out of cleveland, ohio. but this one takes the cake, and it is going to create essentially post-traumatic stress disorder in these

investigator who is are going to have to get therapy and get help and get counseling for what they are dealing with. and now the search for more bodies has in fact expanded, chuck. they are going in a six-mile radius of this home. and looking in every abandon building, in every shed, wondering, could this guy have buried more bodies in these abandon areas. this is a nightmare. and, of course, you're hearg from neighbors who said i could have been one of the victims. he invited me in for a drink. >> i'm surprise not one missing person's case has been cleared by this. they don't have a positive i.d. i don't mean finally cleared. but nobody has come forward and say my daughter could be in there. my mom could be in there. >> i think there's a lot of speculation. there are people saying, hey, my cousin and my relative disappeared and lived in the vicinity. but the decomposition of the bodies is probably presenting an obstacle to positively identify them and therefore match them.

you would think with the dental records alone they would have to be able to match some soon. i'm sure this is just the beginning of a major investigation. we're going to start hearing now the identities of these women. this is going to add a layer of horror to the story as we learn who these people are. right now they're numbers. soon they will be people. >> let me pose one thing. cbs spoke to a young woman whose mother went missing. she was a drug addict. she went missg from the neighborhood a year ago and the daughter said when she went to police they laughed and said oh, she'll show up for christmas. >> i think there is a double standard when it comes to looking for missing women and there is an aspect to it where if the person is a troubled person the police don't give it the attention they should. you know why? they need to find that person. that's a human being. and where that person is there could be others. as we're learning in this case.

them. garrido was under federal parole supervision for rape charges. the a.p. reports officers missed thopportunities to discover the girl. he and his wife nancy have pleaded not guilty. a national guard soldier got a shock when she got home on leave. she'd been robbed, big time. sylvia simmons said it never occurred to her she would get ripped off while in combat zone. they kicked in her back door and looted her home just outside of atlanta. >> it's heartbreaking that we're over there serving and somebody can do something like this. i was devastated. you know. it's the little things. the grandfather's dog tags and my mother's wedding band. for me instead of putting them in prison, i think what we are to do is put them in the combat zone over there so they can fear for their life every minute.

gerald and elizabeth got a $29,000 bill from the hospital. along with the bill the detailed effort that forced them to relive their tragic loss. they said the bill and letter should have gone to the insurance company. police are accusing a fellow student of killing him. detainees at the u.s. facility at guantanamo bay in cuba won't be getting the h1n1 flu vaccines after all.

the task force responsible for detainees said they would be getting vaccinated. lawmakers quickly criticized the plan because of vaccine shortages in the u.s. now the white house says there is no h1n1 vaccine and none is on the way. the end of the year is rapidly approaching. you need to think about taxes. simple moves being made now and the end of the year could reduce your tax bite in 2010. stephanie is joining us to help. your first piece of advice. stop hanging on loser investments, right? >> that's right. selling them at a loss can be a very powerful tax strategy lots of times we hang onto losing investments hoping they'll turn around. you lose the losses to justify

pensacola police have spoken with the father of her unborn child several times. they're not ruling out anyone as a suspect. overhauling health insurance may take longer than expected. yesterday the senate majority leader harry reid was asked if his health care bill would pass this year. he refused to give a timetable. democrats say the congressional budget office blew the deadline for analyzing the cost of the bill. the senate can't vote until it's completed. the delay may also mean having trouble getting enough votes. on the other side of capitol hill house leaders are hoping to take a vote this weekend of their bill. president obama originally wanted a bill on his desk before the august recess.

there is no vaccine and none is on the way. because of the fear of h1n1 flu the government is urging you to stay home if you get sick. don't try to toughen it out and go to work. so what if you don't get sick pay? maybe you can't afford to stay home. now a congressman is introducing a bill so people who do not get sick pay could get five days paid off. he says 50 million people don't get paid sick leave. he'll push for a quick vote on the measure. if chairman insists he's not gloating but he's smiling about the off-year elections. the gop won in two states. both critical to this the obama win a year ago. a new york congressional is no longer in republican hands. chris christie is the first republican to win a statewide race in more than a decade.

today marks the one-year anniversary of the historic election of president barack obama. all week our what matters with our partnership with "essence" magazine. has life changed for them in the last year? i mean does it really effect their day-to-day lives? this week i sat down with some prominent male leaders in african-american community to ask that question. today meet tom williams. he, like president obama's breaking barriers, as the first black head coach at yale university. only the second in the ivy league. >> african-american men are very capable of leadership. obviously, president obama has demonstrated that he is. he's well spoken. he's very intelligent. and we're certainly -- i'm thrilled that he's had the opportunity. i think it's made it better for a lot of african-american men.

>> you're the first black football coach at your school. the second-ever at an ivy league school. why so long? >> you know i'm not so sure but i do know that yale has been at the forefront of education in a lot of areas and i don't think that it's any surprise that it's also in the forefront in terms of hiring an african-american coach. i don't know why these things take so long but i'm glad i've got the opportunity to break down a barrier. >> and let's talk about role models for young people. because we've heard the president say more than once that he is -- he's talked to young people about looking beyond people like lebron and there's nothing wrong with lebron, but looking beyond athletes, specifically, as your role models -- >> sure. >> -- do you think that coaches who are on the front lines with young kids should also take up that message to talk to them about someone besides an athlete being your role model? >> i do. i do. i think that there are a lot of positive role models out there

who don't bounce a basketball or who don't kick a football. obviously having our president being african-american i think is one of the top role molds that you could have but they're all over. they're in the police departments. they're at the fire department. they're lawyers and doctors and i think that there are certainly other folks out there that young, young black people can look at and inspire to be. >> williams adds that he doesn't just want to be a role molds for kids in connecticut but for kids in high schools and colleges across the country. benchmark lending rate near zero for an extended period and upgraded its view of the economy. but the rally fizzled right here in the closing bell. . dow jones industrials adding only 30 points to close at 9802. the nasdaq losing two points. and the broader s&p 500 gaining .1 of a percent. shares of intel rose 1.25%. and even though new york attorney general andrew cumoi filed an antitrust lawsuit against the chipmaker. he's charging that intel threatened computermakers and paid kickbacks to stop them from using competitor's chips. and microsoft said it's slashing 800 more positions from its workforce bringing the total for the year to almost 6,000. still tough in the job market, richelle. >>, who 6,000, that's a huge number. >> it is. >> all right, allison, thank you. >> reporter: sure. a convicted rapist made his first court appearance today. we're talking about this case happening in cleveland after authorities found one decomposing body after another in his home. ten total. there might be more.

a convicted rapist who's facing multiple counts of murder, rape, kidnapping, he will be staying in jail. the judge in cleveland this morning denied bond for 50-year-old anthony sowell calling his alleged crimes gruesome. within the past week, authorities have found the remains of at least ten people in/around his home. including a skull discovered wrapped in paper in the basement. you can see authorities removing some of those bodies from his property. earlier on hln, we spoke with the detective lieutenant steve rogers from the nutley, new jersey police department about what investigators are probably focused on now. >> caller: i'm sure they're going to be looking for

videotapes. unfortunately a lot of these serial killers do film or tape these gruesome murders. so that's going to be a major piece of evidence if they find that. additionally, they'll be collaborating with police departments throughout the entire country. and the reason they're going to do that is there are a number of cold cases that i am sure are going to be opened, reopened and a number of missing person's reports will be reviewed once again. >> so you have to wonder did people in the neighborhood think something was strange? well, neighbors say they did complain of a foul smell in the area, but some thought it was coming from a nearby business that sold sausage. the parents of a missing virginia tech student morgan harrington say they're beginning a new search for her on friday. they've also raised the reward to $150,000. her mother gave an emotional plea today and had a special message for her daughter. listen to this. >> morgan, 2-4-1. be strong. we are trying to find you.

we will never stop. we are trying, honey. hang on. and to the person who has taken morgan from us, please just let her go. she has so much more to live and so much more to give. please let her come back to her family. we need her. >> okay and the video, morgan's mom made the signal with her hands, 2-4-1. it turns out that that this is a special family message she was sending to her child. it means, i love you too much, forever and once more. the family uses the message with each other in notes, in sign language and also 2-4-1 is apparently the symbol on morgan's father's luggage. the rocker metallica is contributing $50,000 to the reward fund. harrington went missing last month during a metallica concert in charlottesville. investigators think that the

three dickin state university softball players who were missing since sunday mistakenly drove into a farm pond in the dark. the bodies of 22-year-old kyrstin gemar, 20-year-old afton williamson and 21-year-old ashley neufeld were found in an suv at the bottom of the pond. last night a vigil was held on campus for the women. investigators were led to that pond by signals from their desperate cell phone calls. a missing pregnant woman has been found dead. her body was discovered in a bayou in florida monday. lori bernstein from affiliate from pensacola has the stunned reaction from people who knew her. >> i cannot believe that she is gone. >> reporter: for the past ten years, la tisha jenkins has called samira watkins a friend. one of dozens of people who gathered at the 25-year-old's home after hearing the bad news. >> it is devastating that somebody would actually kill this girl and then throw her body over in some water because that's basically what happened. i know they're saying, basically

just dished her body like she ain't nothing. >> reporter: these two men driving waive runners across the bayou saw the body lying here in the shoreline around 2:00 p.m. after two hours on the scene, police finally confirmed it was the missing pensacola woman they had been searching for. >> the last couple of days we'd been looking -- obviously look for her and her car and her ford taurus and unfortunately our worst fears have been realized. >> police will not say what state the body was in or how watkin was actually killed. what they will say is that they knew from the start of the case that foul play was involved. >> it's just her -- behavior. she was a good student. she had a small child that she left and she also was a manager of a local -- a local restaurant. and her behavior, her not showing up is so out of ordinary for her it kind of sent up some red flags. >> family members saying she was headed to her unborn child's father before disappeared. police have not named him as a suspect and police do know where he is and he's been questioned

several times. no matter who ends up behind bars for this crime, family and friends say they want the ultimate punishment. >> i hope they go to jail. not only do i hope they go to jail, but i hope the judge or whoever, electrocuted him to the bay, electrocute to every breath of his body because not only did he kill her but he killed an unborn child that didn't make it into this world. >> wow. thanks to wear's lori bernstein nar report. whens me do charge someone in this case they'll be facing two counts of murder for watkins as well as her unborn child. police hope autopsy will show more life on what happened. we have something just in to hl. in the kaioga county coroner's office has identified the first victim found a convicted rapist anthony sowell's home through dna evidence. came to us just a few minutes ago. listen to this. >> hello, everyone. i would like to provide and

update on what we have so far. we have recovered 11 victims. we have recovered ten bodies and one partial skeleton from the imperial avenue address. one autopsy is still being completed at this time. but they're all african-american women. seven died of ligature strangulation. one died of manual strangulation. two, the dekcomposition of the body includes deaccuracy, homicide in two cases and in the last case the autopsy is ongoing. does not appear to have a ligature. and will undoubtedly be a case of either manual strangulation or homicidal violence. so that's 11 victims. there were six inside the house and five recovered from the yard. identification is going fairly

well. the first identification was made by dna today. and pending confirmation, a family notification, that will be released to the public. and we have dna profiles from the six victims recovered last weekend. we'll have dna on the five bodies recovered yesterday in three to four days. however, we will not be able to identify the bodies unless we have reference samples from biological relatives of the missing persons. so far we've received only five reference samples from biological relatives. again, we've already done one dna identity. we're going to have to rely on either dental examination or dna identification in this case because of the level of decomposition and decay in the bodies. fingerprints will not be possible. so we're look for more places to look as far as identity.

so if people have a loved one missing from that area, we'd like to have them contact kai hoga county korcoroner's office. to make arrangements to make a dna office. our identification department has been heading this up and is one of the reasons why we're able to move so quickly is we have our own dna section. >> this is a briefing that just frptd kaioga county coroner's office where this is where anthony sowell, who was in custody right now -- all right, just getting more information from my producer there to make sure that i'm up to speed. where 11 victims, we're now up to 11 victims, bodies that have been found in this home in cleveland. ten bodies, one skeleton, latest information being that at least eight of these people african-american women. african-american women were strangled. that is the method of killing,
