hey, good morning. i'm natasha curry in for robin meade today. hope you're having a good morning so far. we are just two days away from a house vote on health care reform. and the democrats could get a big boost today from one of the most powerful lobbying groups in the country. police find a missing infant alive. but you have got to hear where she was the entire time. another mom and baby-sitter, they're facing charges. plus a sex tape may be the reason former miss california usa carrie prejean's dispute with pageant officials is over. what some are saying is on the tape. but first, our top story. police now have recovered 11 bodies who are registered sex offenders home.

we've learned the identity of one victim. authorities identified her as tonya carmichael, a woman who's been missing for about a year. police say she was buried in the backyard with marks indicating that she was strangled. now, the grim discovery did not even surprise her family. >> this is what i've been saying since monday when, you know, we were called to the coroner's office, since this story broke. we automatically knew that this was going to be her. all of these women have not yet been identified. >> right. >> fortunately my mother was the first victim to be identified, and that gives us closure on knowing where she is, but we're not happy about the way the police have conducted it. >> the suspect showed no emotion in court yesterday. he is charged with five murders. his attorney wants him to get a psychiatric evaluation. she says he's an ex-marine with a heart condition. also, police are no longer calling him a convicted rapist.

court records show he was charged with a 1989 rape but pleaded guilty to attempted rape in a plea deal. well, the celebration is on in new york as the yankees once again -- again -- world champions! here's rafer with the latest. >> hey, natasha. how do people feel about it in the studio here? >> all right. >> happy new yorkers here, natasha. it is the franchise's 27th world series title. but the win was anything but pedestrian. matsui's nickname is godzilla, and he had a monster game. he knocked in six runs. that ties a world series record as the yankees beat the phillies in six games. and for alex rodriguez, a guy who notoriously disappears in the postseason, it was sweet redemption. and then there's owner george steinbrenner. unfortunately, too frail to see it in person, but no doubt, he was smiling as the yajnkees win their first series since 2000. oh, how that franchise has

suffered. >> the pain, the misery. >> oh, the pain, nine whole years without a title. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> thank you, rafer. all right. house democrats, they could get a boost on health care reform from the aarp. the associated press reports the powerful seniors lobby will endorse the house version of the bill today. the ten-year, trillion-dollar plan would insure another 36 million people and bar insurance companies from dropping coverage for sick people. the house is expected to vote on saturday. well, taking aspirin every day to prevent a heart attack if you've never had one before might be riskier than previously thought. a new report in "drug and therapeutics bulletin" say people may not want to use it as a preventative measure because of the risks like internal bleeding. however, the american heart association says that a daily, low dose of aspirin can help some people who already have heart trouble. new this morning. a baby girl here missing for five days was found alive

underneath her baby-sitter's bed in florida. police say 7-month-old shannon diedrich had been hidden inside a box. she has been placed in protective custody and appears healthy. deputies arrested the baby-sitter, her husband and the child's mother, but so far they have not released what charges all three may be facing. well, lawmakers are throwing a life line to millions of americans struggling to find jobs right now. our money expert, jennifer westhoven, is here. it looks like an extension of jobless benefits is on the fast track. >> let's see if they can do it before tomorrow's big report. senators passed the bill yesterday. it could be on the house floor today. it would need, if this passes, so not passed yet, but 14 more weeks of benefits for americans out of work. that could get a lot of people through the holiday season. so that's good news in a bad economy for all the people counting on that money to help them pay the bills as they look for work. if you're in a red state, these

are states with high unemployment, that would mean 20 weeks in total. they get six weeks more. and, of course, tomorrow's a big monthly jobs report. and it's very likely, a lot of economists say we'll see the headline that you'll be reading about all weekend that unemployment may have hit 10%. we're very close to that now. now, the bill also has tucked into some benefits if you buy a home. we'll fill you in on that in just a moment. >> thanks so much. you've got to see this video. it's of a prison attack with an amazing twist. check it out here. a surveillance camera shows an inmate at a tamp pa prison attacking the 60-year-old guard and putting him in a chokehold. look at that. then the other inmates jump in to help the deputy. you see the guards punching the attacker, then holding him down. one guard used the radio to call for backup. >> it's hard to point your finger on what caused it. but it was fast and violent. he struck him in the face and

proceeded to lock him into a rear naked choke. it's used in ground fighting and in martial arts, cuts off the blood supply. these inmates likely saved deputy moon's life. >> the commander says the guard wasn't seriously hurt. his alleged attacker was locked up on drug charges. pretty amazing. usually you think about, you know, inmates, you know, not liking the guards or whatever. but apparently -- >> came to his aid that time. >> yeah. he's lucky. >> what's up, natasha? >> hey, bob. >> same situation as yesterday. different storm but really the same deal for you. if you live across the great lakes and northeast, a clipper system. the one yesterday threw clouds at you and light rain, too. now it's offshore from new york. you see it right there, i labeled it with this "l." here's the other "l," low-pressure region towards ontario with the cold front behind it. not as much energy with this secondary one. but enough to get line rain across ontario, western new york. trying to squeeze out a little snow towards western pennsylvania. it's not reaching the ground as snow.

it is falling as rain. all these pockets of downpours are coming on through. again, it's on the light side. but it is working eastward. it's going to be like that all morning. look at the rain just outside buffalo. you see in southtown, it is moving towards the east towards the finger lakes. scattered showers in central new york today. boston, the tail end of the first system still worki ining way through massachusetts. those two areas of pressure converge into one. it's going to give you a windy day for the east coast tomorrow. look down south across florida. here's the way it goes. frontal boundary by the florida straits. another one up towards the north. rain and thundershowers. we'll find them once again today. mainly from a line of miami towards west palm. most of these are inland right now. we'll see more of this action later today. that's something we're watching. also, we're still in hurricane season, lasts through november 30th. tropical storm ida right now, 70-mile-per-hour sustained winds. actually 75, turned into a hurricane about two minutes ago. glad i had the auto update on.

i'm jennifer westhoven. the bill that was passed by the senate is meant to extend jobless benefits up to 20 weeks. well, that's helped for a lot of people, but they also tucked something in there if you're thinking about buying a home. now, you should know that economists say that that big $8,000 tax credit, it has helped stabilize the housing market for now. the irs says so far about 1.5 million people are trying to take advantage of it. but it was due to run out at the end of the month. but it has now been extended. it will last all the way through june. now, you know the first part. first-time homebuyers qualify for up to $8,000 back in your federal income taxes. but here's what's new. if you've been in your home for more than five years and you own your home, and maybe you've been thinking, i'd like to move, but the housing market's pretty difficult, well, you could qualify for a $6,500 tax credit. the senate also raised the income cap up to $225,000 for a couple. okay.

you want a smartphone, maybe one of the new ones and you use verizon? better make sure you love that phone and the service before you sign anything. verizon is doubling that early termination fee to $350. if you get a smartphone. that's the highest fee we've seen out there. this is according to some newspaper reports. now, remember, that's a fee if you decide you don't like the service, you can't just walk away. you've got to pay this huge fee. it does come down over time, but still, this will start november 15th. you should know some of the back story out there on some of the blogs, they say that people are coming in, buying things like the blackberry storm 2 and then quitting the service and selling the phone on ebay. that's their side, but everybody gets punished. >> it's good to have a heads up in case you're ready to sign a contract. appreciate it. some say republicans' best chance to recapture the white house is with a preacher turned politician. a new "usa today" gallup poll

finds mike huckabee may be the top gop presidential contender. about 40% of those surveyed shows huckabee. 39% shows former massachusetts governor mitt romney. 33% tap former alaska governor sarah palin. none of the three, though, have announced a formal presidential bid. the parents of the virginia tech student who disappeared during a metallica concert are asking for volunteers to help search for her. morgan herrington disappeared october 17th. the new search begins tomorrow. yesterday her parents said they will stop at nothing until she is found. >> be strong. we are trying to find you. we will never stop. we are trying, honey. hang on. and to the person who has taken morgan from us, please just let her go.

accused of holding jaycee dugard captive for 18 years. a report from california's inspector general says officials who were monitoring phillip garrido did not investigate why there were utility wires running from his house to the backyard compound. they also misclassified garrido as a low-risk sex offender despite his rape conviction in 1977. >> we agree that serious errors were made over the last ten years. we, obviously, deeply regret any error that could have possibly resulted in the victims living under these conditions for even one additional day. >> the report also says that dugard repeatedly tried to conceal her identity when she was rescued by police. she told authorities that she was hiding from an abusive husband in minnesota, and even garrido -- even defended garrido. he and his wife have pleaded not guilty to charges related to the kidnapping. the party is on in new york city. you might hear it from where

you're sitting. the yankees have won the world series. here's rafer with more. rafer, we're hearing it. >> yeah. i think they're just starting to go to bed now. yankee fans. good morning, natasha. yeah, the yankees christened their new ballpark the best way possible, with a world series title. and this team had amazingly high expectations but lived up to them, beating the phillies to win their 27th title, and the celebration was on. derek jeter getting congratulations. for alex rodriguez, this was sweet redemption. this is a guy who is -- that's jeter there -- there's rodriguez hoisting the trophy. never delivered in the postseason. and i'm told that the celebration in the locker room was pretty festive. a little out of control there. nick swisher probably should have been wearing goggles. that champagne hurts the eyes. michael jordan's son, marcus, cost the school a shoe sponsorship deal. he plays for ucf which has a deal with adidas. but after he wore his dad's air

after a five-day search, a missing baby was found alive hidden in a box underneath her baby-sitter's bed. the baby-sitter, her husband and the mother -- and the baby's mother have been arrested but not yet charged. the baby has been placed in protective custody. some gay rights activists say that president obama is partly to blame for a stinging election loss in maine. voters there rejected a law that would have allowed same-sex couples to marry. activists say that mr. obama did not publicly defend the law enough even though he supports gay civil rights. a woman missing for about a year has been identified as one of the 11 bodies found at a registered sex offender's home. authorities say tonia carmichael

for the next couple days, we really have our eye set on the storm. it's hurricane ida. looks like it's beginning to make landfall right around that nicaragua coast. it's not moving very fast at all. it's only drifting to the northwest at about seven miles per hour. it's a weak hurricane. 75-mile-per-hour sustained winds but enough to generate big swells across the coast. also, tremendous amounts of rainfall. watch the path of this thing as it basically hugs the coast of nicaragua in towards honduras. hopefully it rains itself out, but if it does emerge into the caribbean, it may begin to pick up steam over the weekend. then if it hits the yucatan peninsula and goes on through, it may end up in the gulf of mexico sometime next week.

so the gulf coast, texas, all the way through louisiana, keep your eyes peeled on the storm over the next seven days. obviously, we have a lot of time to watch it. but 25 inches of rain, that's what we'll get across the coast of nicaragua. that is just dangerous mudslide material. that's exactly what we'll hear reports of in the next couple days. to the northeast, we have a weak area of low pressure. it's a clipper-type system. it's a different one from yesterday, but it is moving through the great lakes. you can see the light rain with that. all the blue is light rain, and the pittsburgh radar picks it up pretty well. it's around eastern parts of ohio, back in towards western pa. more rain around buffalo, too. you see the radar picture there. all that sliding in towards the finger lakes later this afternoon. and the end stages of yesterday's clipper is still working through eastern parts of massachusetts. real light rainfall, but it's out there. eastern massachusetts, parts of rhode island, too. get away from that, heavier downpours across southern florida. that's because of a front to the south. thunderstorms will be more prevalent this afternoon than what we're looking at this morning. but it's out there just off the coast of miami, west palm, ft. lauderdale, too. more details in just a bit.

♪ you look so beautiful tonight ♪ should we add pets to the list of h1n1 concerns right now? according to the american veterinary medical association, the answer is yes. a cat in iowa has tested positive for the virus. and doctors say that the cat appears to have gotten it from a person who was sick in the

house. the cat has since recovered, and the association says besides humans, h1n1 has been found in birds, pigs and ferrets. police say a teenager who confessed to killing a child and putting him in a dryer admitted that he molested the 4-year-old. after affidavit revealed in court yesterday says that 14-year-old raul castro allegedly lured his young neighbor into his house and molested him. but later panicked when the child threatened to tell and drowned the boy in a bathtub. the victim's family is having a tough time coping. >> with things as horrible as that, you have to just rely on things of a higher nature. and that's truly what they've done, and that's what's carrying them through this. >> the child's family and friends held a vigil tuesday night. castro has been charged as an adult. his family describes him as a good boy who's never been in trouble. the crackdown on your creditors. lawmakers in washington have

voted to slap tough new rules on credit card companies. our money expert, jennifer westhoven's, looking out for you. what's this all about? >> this is like a fight between the democrats in the house and credit card companies. basically the democrats say they feel duped. they voted to slap tough new rules on companies sooner rather than later to speed up those new credit card rules to start december 1st instead of waiting until february. so the bill would, if approved, effectively freeze rates and fees for nine months. the lawmakers said they heard too many complaints from you, from their voters, saying that they were getting heaped with charges, rates, fees as banks tried to take advantage of the window. some of the lawmakers basically said, you know, these banks asked us for time to handle the paperwork. instead they used the time to hit everybody with fees. new york democrat carolyn maloney said, quote, the credit card companies brought this on themselves. kellogg is pulling a label from the rice krispie boxes that

there is a memorial service planned today for the three missing college softball players who were found dead this week in north dakota. their jeep was submerged in a pond. the sheriff says they apparently drove into it in the dark.

and friends and classmates at dickenson state university gathered to remember them. also their families threw roses and softballs into the pond where they were found. a loud boom scared people out of bed in texas overnight. look at the flames from a gas pipeline explosion. authorities say the blast destroyed a home, damaged several others, and even melted window blinds. at least three people got hurt, and dozens had to evacuate. >> my first concern was my friend that lives down the street right next to that pipeline. >> just removing the folks from the hazard, and that's, you know, when the law enforcement steps in, assist us with evacuation. that's the main thing right now. you can't really remove the hazard away from the people exposed, so you, you know, obviously, got to get them out. >> authorities say the fire is now under control. and everyone has been allowed to go home. well, as investigators look for more bodies in a home in ohio, the suspect in that case is being looked at in at least one attack in another state.

>> the excavation goes on in the cleveland home, a three-story home of former marine anthony sole. the body count has actually risen. it is now at 11. and we learned tonight that sole may be linked to other crimes on women in california. >> more on this case tonight on "nancy grace" at 8:00 p.m. eastern here on "hln." a proud military mom says that she was told to take down her banner supporting the troops at a recent nfl game. she says though she flies it proudly wherever she goes. karen williams tied it to a railing near her seat, but your honorers told her, it's got to go. >> that hurt so bad because all's we're trying to do is show these young gentlemen and women that we support them. >> the stadium says the removal had nothing to do with the content but rather the fact that it was tied to the railing. well, most of us are

munching on halloween candy, but the christmas tree's already going up at the biltmore house in north carolina. it took crews all day yesterday to decorate the tree. however, this particular tree won't make it to december 25th. it's going to be replaced by a fresher tree closer to christmas. and i've been in there. they go all out with the decorations, i tell you what. the celebration is on in new york as the yankees are world champions once again. here's rafer weigel. rafer, i'm starting to feel bad for the phillies. >> don't feel bad for the phillies because they won it last year. >> okay, okay. >> so now the yankees won it this year. but it would be nice if maybe another team would win it next year. but the yankees do know how to celebrate. this is their 27th title but their first since 2000, so that's a long time to suffer. it's also their first in their new $1.3 billion stadium. and how sweet it was. >> series over!

rain makers, could see as much as half an inch of rain over these guys over the next couple of hours. mostly onshore, light showers moving in. total for 24 hours, could see as much as a half inch of rain. as for the hurricane, let me show you the path of this thing, hurricane ida off the shore of nicaragua, currently almost hugging the shore. category 1 storm. watch the path, up through nicaragua, basically honduras as well. you can see it's mostly on land, the circulation. good news. it doesn't look like it will strengthen much, but the heavy rain out there 24 to 36 hours, could produce as much as 20 to 25 inches of rain, muddedslides is a good possibility. then we get away from there, to the west coast. i want to show you our newest storm off the shore of the pacific. this is seattle, down through portland, the clouds are blasting their way through the states. look at the rain now beginning to show up on that radar out of seattle. that rain is going to turn heavy at times, specifically later today. you could get as much as two

breaking news on the job market this morning. the government says the number of people filing for unemployment claims for the first time fell last week. that's good news. the number went down 20,000 to 512,000 people, still more than half a million people signing up for benefits for the first time, the lowest number we've seen since january. stock markets have been pretty jittery ahead of these jobs numbers, swinging pretty wildly in the past week. the big number, of course, comes tomorrow. but they're looking closely at the job market because the economy can't really come back until consumers come back, right? that's you. you can't spend if you don't have a joob job. again, the big number coming tomorrow. today's number being watched for clues about the number tomorrow. there there's some thinking we could see unemployment hit 10% tomorrow. the house has voted to slap tough new rules on credit card companies sooner rather than

later. this bill would speed up those new credit card rules to start december 1st instead of waiting until february. it's just the house bill, but it would effectively freeze rates and fees for nine months. and those lawmakers said, hey, they had heard from you, from their constituents. they said a lot of voters complained that banks were heaping up the charges and the fees before the new rules went into effect. they say people are vulnerable right now. they couldn't take that. new york democrat carolyn maloney said, the credit card companies brought this on themselves. the house democrats sounded pretty upset about the credit card companies' behavior in the past few weeks. kellogg is going to pull a label off the box of rice crispies and cocoa krispies. they claim the cereal can boost your child's immunity. it has to do with the h1n1 virus. the san francisco city attorney basically called out the company, suggesting kellogg's was trying to cash in on fear about the swine flu.

check out the flames from a gas pipeline explosion. the loud boom scared people right out of bed in the texas panhandle. the blast destroyed a home, damaged several others and even melted window mriends. at least three people got hurt and dozens evacuated. the authorities say the fire is now under control. premature births may be the main reason the u.s. infant mortality rate is higher than most european countries. a government study finds out about one in eight u.s. babies are premature. experts say reasons is the increasing use of c-sections and labor of-inducing drugs, poor access to prenatal drug, maternal obesity smoking.

but premature babies born in the u.s. are more likely to survive than those born elsewhere. swine flu forced a school district to stop their program for perfect attendance. school officials say it boosted test scores and qualified them for state money, but they don't want kids spreading h1n1 just so they won't miss class. >> in this time of a very potentially unprecedented flu season, we do not want to encourage children to come to school if they're not feeling well. >> the superintendent says last year during flu season so many kids called out sick they had to have makeup days on saturdays. here is a question about the swine flu. should we add pets to the list of h1n1 concerns? according to the american veterinarian and medical association, yes. a cat in iowa has tested positive for the virus and doctors say that the cat appears to have gotten it from a person who was sick in the house.

the cat has since recovered and the association says that besides humans h1n1 has been founded in bigs, birds and ferrets. a jury could decide today if being overweight is a good murder defense. edward aides is accuse shooting his former son-in-law. he weighed 285 pounds tetd and his lawyers say he didn't have the stamina to run up the stairs, shoot someone and drive 21 hours to his mom's house. prosecutors agree he's not physically fit but say he is capable of planning and carrying out the killing. to baseball. the celebration is on in new york as the yankees are world champions once again. here's rafer weigel with more on that. hey, rafer. >> good morning, natasha. the empire strikes back. it is their 27th world series title, more than anybody else. but their first since 2000 and their first in their new $1.3 billion stadium. how sweet it was.

offender's home. we've learned the identity of one of the victims. authorities identified her as tonia carmichael. police say she was buried in the backyard with marks indicating she was strangled. the grim discovery did not surprise her family, though. >> this is what i've been saying since monday when, you know, we were called to the coroner's office and since this story broke, we automatically knew this was going to be her. all of these women have not yet been identified -- >> right. >> -- fortunately my mother was the first victim to be identified and that gives us closure on knowing where she is. but we're not happy about the way the police are trying to spin it. >> sowell showed no emotion in court here yesterday. he is charged with five murders. his attorney wants him to get a psychiatric evaluation. she says sowell is an ex-marine

with a heart condition. and police are no longer calling sowell a convicted rapist. he was charged with a 1989 rape but pleaded guilty to attempted rape in a plea deal. well, lawmakers are throwing a lifeline to millions of americans struggling right now to find jobs. our money expert jennifer westhoven's here. looks like it's on the fast track. >> this is something that the senate could actually agree on. they passed this bill yesterday, 98-0 to extend benefits. it could get to the house floor today. so it's not law yet if you're counting on this benefit extension. but there are hundreds of thousands of out of work americans who could get longer benefits, even through the holidays because of this. that's good news in a bad economy. now, here's how it breaks down. in the states you see in red here, that's where unemployment is higher. and folks there, they'll get 20 more weeks of checks. clearly lawmakers trying to get -- trying to speed things up before tomorrow's big unemployment report. the states in the middle, they

would get 14 weeks there. and tomorrow's expected headline could be that the unemployment rate nationally has hit 10%. it's been at about 9.8%. so it's been very close. it's something a little bit of a milestone that will probably be in the press a lot and i think that the senators are wanting to look like they're in action. a little gift for home buyers, not just first-time home buyers either. well, new this morning, the latest video of a baby girl missing for five days. she was found alive underneath her babysitter's bed in florida. police say 7-month-old shannon dedrick had been put inside a box. and police say she appeared healthy. >> we are the proud papas of a little girl. this is shannon, we found her safe, we do not usually get the

error that could've resulted in the victims living in these conditions for one additional day. >> the report also says that dugard repeatedly tried to conceal her identity when she was rescued by police. she told authorities she was hiding from an abusive husband in florida. garrido and his wife have pleaded not guilty to charges related to the kidnapping. house democrats could get a big boost on health care reform from the aarp. the associated press reports the powerful seniors lobby will endorse the house version of the bill today. the 10-year $1 trillion plan would insure another 36 million people and barring insurance companies from taking coverage from sick people. do you hear them? yankees fans screaming all the way from new york. and here in the studio, as well. well, they once again won the whole world series. they're world champions, rafer?

another news conference is scheduled for noon. we'll bring you the latest on that. well, the parents of a virginia tech student who disappeared last month during a metallica concert are asking for volunteers to help search for her. the new search for her starts tomorrow. yesterday, her parents said that they will stop at nothing until she's found. >> be strong. we are trying to find you. we will never stop. we are trying, honey, hang on. and to the person who has taken morgan from us, please just let her go. she has so much more to live and so much more to give. please let her come back to her family. we need her. >> police say they are continuing to follow the leads in this case, but they have no new information to work on right now. there's a $150,000 reward for

storm hurricane this morning. category one storm, 75 miles per hour winds, not moving very fast. it's going to be a very heavy rainmaker. that's the main threat, nicaragua, honduras, 20 to 25 inches of rain. it should get right over land over the next couple of days. slow mover, hopefully rains itself out, but if it doesn't, if it emerges back into the caribbean, could gain strength and maybe if it reaches into the gulf of mexico by mid next week, it might be a storm in the gulf. so it's something we're watching. more on that and the pacific forecast in half hour. >> hopefully that guy will fizzle out, or her. well, on wall street, stocks are set to rise as new retail sales numbers show that consumers are starting to come back now. susan lisovicz is at the new york stock exchange with a look at the early market numbers. hey, susan. >> hey, natasha, looks good, investors are buying because consumers are buying. no one is splurging, but

wholesaler costco posted a 5% increase in sales and gas got a boost from old navy. and this comes as unemployment lines shrink a little bit. fell to 500,000, it's the lowest number since january. because of that, the senate voted to extend unemployment benefits by up to 20 weeks. it would be the third emergency extension. some companies are starting to wrap up hiring. cisco plans to bring in new employees, reporting better than expected quarterly profit and expects revenue growth this quarter for the first time in a year. finally, natasha, it is neither gratuitous nor boastful when i say that the yankees win over the phillies could bode well for wall street. standard & poors says when the bronx bombers win the world series, and they have for 27 times, the s&p returns an average of 10% in the following year. so see the bronx bombers win, it's good for everyone.

police say a teenager who confessed to killing a child and putting him in the dryer admitted he molested the child. he allegedly lured his young neighbor into his house and molested him and later panicked when the child threatened to tell and drown the boy in a bathtub. the victim's family is having a tough time coping. >> with things this horrible and sad, you have to rely on things of the higher nature, and that's truly what they've done and carrying them through this. >> the child's family and friends held that vigil tuesday night here. castro has been charged as an adult. his family describes him as a good boy who has never been in trouble. you remember the birds nest? the center of last year's olympic games in beijing. chinese officials are struggling to figure out what to do with the thing. these days only a few thousand a day pay to tour it, that's down from 50,000.
