a missing baby's ordeal is finally over. why the recovery is making grown men cry. is the queen of talk about to quit? there's a rumor that oprah may ditch daytime. how much information is too much for your kids as we head into the holiday season your views on being honest about your bottom line. hln "news and views" on a thursday. a 7-month-old baby girl missing five days is safe in protective custody. she was found in a cedar box, a 2x3 foot cedar box under a bed in her baby sitter's home in

florida. authorities planning to charge that baby sitting, her husband and the baby's own mother in the disappearance. the washington count sheriff talked about finding little shannon alive. >> the search began at 8:00 p.m. which included a canine search and rescue team. at approximately 9:55 p.m., shannon dedrick was found in a 2x3 foot cedar chest underneath a bed. under the bed was the box shoved in the back and a lot of material in the front of it to deceive anyone that was looking. this box had a lid on it and also had a lock on it. she was in the box -- excuse me. she was in the box for almost 12

hours. >> the only thing in that box was a blanket and a box of baky soda because she soiled her diaper. the baby sitter was questioned in a missing persons case in 2000. police have recovered 11 bodies from anthony sowell's home in the living room, the crawl spaces, the backyard. graves everywhere. they plan to start tearing apart the interior walls as they search for more evidence and more victims. a chain link fence near the home is now a makeshift memorial with stuffed animals and flyers with pictures of 13 men and women who vanished without a trace. sowell was ordered held without bond on five counts of aggravated murder. one of the bodies has been i.d.'d as taunia kacarmichael.

she was buried in the backyard and had marks that showed she had been strangled. investigators say carmichael fit the profile of the victims sowell allegedly targeted. women with criminal records and with alcohol and drug problems and who lived or hung out near his home. last night on nancy grace, carmichael's daughter shared some of her memories. >> i'm looking at these pictures of your mom. she has the most beautiful smile. tell me something about her. what were her joys in life? what was she like? >> well, as you can see from the photographs she had a gorgeous smile. thank you for the compliment on that. she loved her family. she loved holidays and vacation. she loved to cook and prepare meals, thanksgiving and christmas. she loved seafood. she loved trips to vegas. she just loved her family.

welcome back. first-time jobless claims fell more than analyst expected last week. the labor department said they dropped to 512,000. down 20,000 from the week previous. the lowest level since january. monthly jobless numbers everybody is waiting for that for october come out tomorrow. a lot of people having to cut back on spending in general because of the economy. so how are you handling this? how about your family? are you telling your kids about your financial situation? richelle carey joins us now. what prompted this? >> people on facebook, chuck. we have discussions on facebook and people said i'm having a tough time. let's talk about the tough time we're having financially and what do you tell the kids? kids can figure things out. that's what we're talking about. we don't have to really tell people how tough it is but just to give you an idea to set the table, half of american kids who live in households receiving

food stamps before the age of 20. it really is about the kids. also, 7,000 people are losing their unemployment benefits every day. they're trying to get help. agencies can't keep up. if you're out of a job and never have been before, this is new territory for you. you don't necessarily know how to navigate this. you learn as you go along. this is new normal for people. what do you tell the kids? let's get to people calling. harriet calling from ohio. what's your experience. what are you going through? >> caller: how are you? >> great. >> caller: i agree with the fact that you should be honest with your children. they know what's going on. my husband and i have two children and one is 19 and one is 16. but as they were growing up and at the age where they could understand, we told them -- santa, yes, he brings your toys but mommy and daddy have to pay santa. explain things to your kids. they hear you talking. they understand. they see what's going on with

the economy. >> let me ask you this. were you ever afraid of being too honest to where you would make them nervous to think maybe mommy and daddy can't take care of us? were you ever afraid of telling them too much? >> caller: no, i wasn't. we were giving them enough to help them deal with things. that way they wouldn't be let down. they wouldn't be discouraged. they know that it doesn't come free. >> that's a lesson we can all be reminded of. thank you for your phone call. julia calling us from california. julia, unemployment is hitting a lot of people. you want to do the best you can for your kids. how do you handle these situations? >> caller: absolutely. thank you for having me. i myself am on unemployment. to make up for that my husband is actually working one full-time job and two part-time jobs. the kids can tell daddy isn't home that much. >> absolutely.

and we are honest with our kids on what's going on. you know, as long as they have a roof over their head and food on the table, they understand. they also understand that christmas might not be what it used to be. however, we have our ups and downs and when things are really good, we tend to go out and spend money and buy them things when they don't expect it. and so, you know, christmas is light this year and they understand why. >> they can obviously tell how much you love them and how hard you work for them that's for sure. thank you for your phone call. lots of comments. lots of interesting comments. a bit of wisdom on my facebook page from fantastic parents weighing in.

on monday. some florida inmates are getting props for helping save a prison guard attacked by another inmate. a surveillance camera shows an inmate at a jail near tampa attacking a 64-year-old guard and putting him in a choke hold. other inmates then jump in to help the deputy. you can see them punching the attacker. holding him down. one of the men even used the guard's radio to call for backup. >> it's hard to point your finger at what provoked this. it was fast and violent. he locked into what's referred to as a rear naked choke used in ground fighting and in martial arts cuts off the blood supply. inmates likely saved the deputy's wife. >> the jail commander said the guard wasn't seriously hurt. his alleged attacker was locked up on drug charges. remember ian pearl? we told but him a few weeks ago. he has muscular dystrophy and lives in south florida. his insurance company was going

reinterviewed yesterday and provided law enforcement with a consent to search their home. the search began at 8:00 p.m. which included a canine search and rescue team. at approximately 9:55 p.m. shannon dedrick was found in a 2x3 foot cedar chest underneath a bed. under the bed the box shoved in the back and a lot of material in front of it to deceive anyone who was looking. this box had a lid on it and also had a latch on it. she was in the box -- she was in the box for almost 12 hours. in a closed box.

shannon was immediately taken to northwest community hospital here where she was examined by a local doctor. shannon is currently located at the hospital and we understand that she's in good condition. the investigation was revealed that shannon's mother and susan elizabeth baker met friday, october 30th. susan baker asked christina if she would permanently take custody of shannon. christina agreed to meet with susan on october 31st at 1:30 a.m. on brown street. susan baker took custody of shannon from her mother sometime in the hours of october 31st. christina is charged with interference of child custody, a

third-degree felony, deserting a child, failing to report a missing child, false report of a crime first-degree misdemeanor, contributing to the delinquency of a child. susan baker was charged with neglect of a child with aggravated circumstances. second-degree felony. interference of a child custody, third-degree felony. false report regarding a missing child, first-degree misdemeanor. false report of a crime, first-degree misdemeanor. contributing to delinquency of a child, first-degree misdemeanor. we could not have accomplished this without the men and women and more that's not even present to stand behind me today. also i want to say -- >> quite an emotional moment for everybody involved in this case. the baby was found with just a blanket and a box of baking

pantriment but it can be hazardous to your health all because of a chemical known as bpa. a new consumer report study found high levels of bpa in almost all canned foods. there are ways to limit your exposure. try eating more fresh or frozen foods and use only glass, porcelain or stainless steel containers. some products touting to be bpa-free still has some traces of the chemical. ian was about to lose his medical insurance which pays for care that he needs to stay alive. now he's crusading for others. his new mission.

have you heard of that giant, massive plastic the size of texas floating in the middle of the pacific called the great eastern pacific garbage patch? in august a group of scientist looked into the impact the trash is having on the environment. >> as soon as we got to the area, we started sampling with our troll nets which are only about a meter wide. and unfortunately between the two research vessels we had in the ocean, we found plastic in every single sample over 3,500 miles of sampling. the pervasiveness of this small material, plastic does not biodegrade, most of it does not. but it photodegrade. that means that uv influence on the plastic when it comes -- the larger pieces which can be -- many things are just household

items which somehow find their way into the ocean into this middle where currents are basically swirling in the middle of the pacific, all of this debris gets broken down by the sun and it gets into smaller and smaller pieces. when you look out over the water, it looks beautiful. but when you look down, you see all of these particles. it's almost as if an airplane had come and spread plastic debris across the entire surface. and it's not that thick, but it's pervasive everywhere we went. this was some of the material that is about a millimeter or two millimeters in size. this was found in owl of our sample nets with marine life and sometimes without. but this is the problem that unfortunately has snuck under our radar in the last 40 or 50 years when plastic has really expanded in terms of its use on the plastic. you might think that when it comes off of a beach, it goes into never, neverland.

but it is actually floating out there somewhere. >> for more information about that garbage patch and scientists with the project, logon to cnn.com/ecosolutions. hurricane ida's been downgraded to a tropical storm. still making a lot of people pretty miserable in nicaragua. folks preparing for up to 30 inches of rain. ida is expected to move slowly toward the northwest brushing past cancun on monday. ida comes late in the hurricane season because it ends november 30th. remember ian pearl? he has muscular dystrophy and his insurance company was about to deny coverage, his expensive medical care until he shared his story with us. today two new york state democratic senators announced a bill called ian's law, requiring insurance companies to get permission from a state insurance department before canceling an entire class of insurance policies. ian's family says that's what

his insurance company tried to do in order to get out of paying his $1 million a year medical tab. first time jobless claims found more than analysts expected last week. the labor department says they dropped to 512,000, down 20,000 from the week before and it's the lowest level since january. jobless numbers for october come out tomorrow. i absolutely agree. >> as we await the jobless numbers, a lot of people, i know, having to cut back on spending because of the economy and the situation that you might be in. we're wondering how you're handling this and specifically how you're talking to your kids about your financial situation, especially as we head into the holidays. richelle carey is here. i've gotten some discussion on my facebook page, i know you have as well. do tell, what are they saying? >> people just don't have it. they're saying, i don't have it and i'm trying to figure out how to tell my kids, i don't have it. and parents can be creative and wise and they've been sharing

ideas on my facebook page. let's get to a phone call first because people are out of jobs now or they may be working, they don't have as many hours so they don't have the money to spend like they did before, more kids than ever are on food stamps. let's get to joanne calling from virginia. joanne thinks even with conditions like this, some kids are still spoiled. what do you think, joanne? >> caller: yes, i think so. i think we missed the big message today. a lot of parents and adults try so hard, i believe, to keep up with the joneses, so to speak. when you start off being happy with the simple things in life, it's easier. american consumers today buy way too many things for our children that they don't really need. the worst thing you can do to a

child is give them everything they want. since when do they know, or even adults, when do we know what we really want? it comes down to the basics. be honest but keep it simple. explain your priorities in your family, what's important -- you can even make it a learning experience. make a list of needs and wants. the roof over your head, food -- >> and maybe now some people are going to be doing that in a way they never have before because they don't have a choice right now. tammy is calling from montana. tammy is one of these people that is having to reach out in a way that you probably thought you would never have to before and it's not going well for you. what have you been going through? >> caller: i'm trying to explain to my 3-year-old she's only 3 because we got denied for toys for tots only because my husband

is not a citizen. it's hard because we're doing the best we can to try to explain that she may not get toys this year. >> have you already had this talk with her? >> caller: well, i guess the law is different here in montana. it's hard. >> i know it is hard. maybe you have other family members that can step in and help you. one thing she clearly has is a mother that knows no bounds for how much she loves her. have you tried any other people or resources that have been able to help you? you're not the only person in this situation. >> caller: we went to the good samaritan and the salvation army and toys for tots, they turned us down only because my husband is not a citizen. and we're all citizens. they're turning down -- i think it's a little prejudice only because he does not have

association has just endorsed the house democrats' health care reform bill. the ama says, quote, it's not a perfect representation of our views but it's close enough. now aarp has also endorsed it. president obama says the backing of the two influential groups is a good indicator the bill is a step in the right direction. >> i am extraordinarily pleased and grateful to learn that the aarp and the american medical association are both supporting the health insurance reform bill that will soon come up to a vote in the house of representatives. when it comes to the aarp, this is no small endorsement. for more than 50 years, they have been a leader in the fight

to reduce the costs of health care and expand coverage for our senior citizens. they are a nonpartisan organization and their board made their decision to endorse only after a careful, intensive, objective scrutiny of this bill. >> house democrats hope to debate and vote on the legislation on saturday. the house has just approved a bill that would extend the new homebuyer's tax credit by an extra seven months. homebuyers who have lived in their current homes for five years will get a $6,500 credit as well. this extends unemployment benefits. the senate passed the bill yesterday. the bill heads to president obama's desk who should sign it into law pretty quickly, we understand. this story is just remarkable. a missing baby girl, there she is, safe in the arms of the sheriff. and three people are under arrest in connection with her disappearance. that's 7-month-old shannon

dedrick, reported missing in florida on sunday. she was found in a cedar chest with the lid on it under a bed at her babysitter's home overnight. >> she was healthy. when the investigator pulled her out, she was wide open, a little surprised, light shining in her eye, but just like nothing is going on. >> the sheriff was visibly moved early this morning when he revealed the child had been found. look at this. >> we are the proud papas of a little girl. this is shannon lee dedrick. we found her safe. we do not usually get to the happy endings that we happened to have here today. if you want to see a bunch of grown men cry, tonight when we rushed her to the hospital, we was all calling home to our

wives to let them know we'd found this baby safe. >> we love to be able to bring these kinds of endings to this kinds of stories to you. investigators say shannon's mother actually gave her the the babysitter ten hours before she reported her missing. both women and the baby's father will face criminal charges. the body count is increasing in the house of horrors in cleveland, ohio. police have recovered 11 bodies from anthony sowell's home, in the living room, crawl space, in backyard graves. they say they plan to start tearing apart interior walls now as they search for more evidence or possibly more bodies. a chain will have link fence near the home has become a makeshift me memorial with stuffed animals and fliers of 13 men and women who vanished without a trace.

products touted as bpa-free did have traces of that substance. cancer patients want one thing above all else from their doctors, according to a new study. as reggie ri qui tells us, that one thing is honesty. >> reporter: a new report offers insight into what cancer patients want in their interaction with doctors. the study, conducted by researchers at the university of pittsburgh cancer institute, shows that 72% of the patients want their doctors to call them by their first name. 37% of female patients preferred to have their hands held during important visits while only 12% of men wanted the same treatment. 95% of patients want their doctor to be honest with them about their chances for survival and cure. that study was conducted between 2006 and 2008 involving 508 patients undergoing radiation treatments for breast, prostate or lung cancer.

the study's author says the goal of the research was to determine what patients want from their doctors and whether doctors would be able to change their behaviors to suit individual patients. he says a strong physician/patient relationship is essential to help cancer patients feel comfortable with their treatment plan. for today's health minute, i'm reggie aqui.

clicks at cnn.com today and dot-com live's reggie aqui is here to tell us about it. >> reporter: there are illegal tunnels that go between egypt and the gaza trip. these have existed for a really long time. people are taking advantage of people who desperately need work or people who just desperately need money. they say, invest in our business where we'll take these goods at high prices between place, back and forth. unemployment is around 80%. so residents are desperate to make money. so con men find these people to invest in their con businesses and promise a return of two to three times. they end up taking their cash and running with it. that leaves poor people even poorer than before. there have been $100 million estimated lost in these ventures. probably more than that. there's a lot of cash to be made.

there are legit tunnel operators that charge merchants around $5,000 to use the tunnel. hamas is now going after some of these illegal folks. but they've only arrested two people so far. so that's not going very well. investors aren't the only ones being conned. workers are getting stiffed. one man says he's owed $1,000 for three months of hard labor. talking about people who already are in hard times and facing strife in their lives and getting taken advantage of even more. >> i know it's just ridiculous to think that it's actually -- that somebody could do that to somebody else, especially in these times. let's talk about something else that's really been on the political mainstream this year, marijuana use. people are talking about it so much, whether it should be legalized, whether it shouldn't. i'm understanding that there's a strange counter trend going on here? >> reporter: this is interesting. it has been in the news recently. we've seen ballot initiatives

talking about legalizing marijuana in some cases. and there is an op-ed on our site today that makes an interesting point. it goes to the softening of some of these laws or at least the softening of the enforcement of these laws when it comes to marijuana. this is specifically from the director of a california group seeking an alternative to the war on drugs. 86% of the people being aregsed for pot-related crimes in new york were black or latino. and he says there are similar numbers coming from california. but the same report that says young whites using marijuana are doing so at higher rates but aren't being caught. the stigma and criminal record are really damages and he suggests ending pot prohibition and says, quote, massive number of arrests are at its core. minority grurngs he says, are

security post in 2004. under his plea deal he could get 2 1/2 years behind bars. some florida inmates are getting props for saving a prison guard attacked by a inmate. there is the inmate attacking the guard. other inmates jumped in to help the deputy. one of the men used the guard's radio to call for backup. >> it's hard to point your finger at what provoked this but it was fast and it was violent. he struck him in the face and he proceeded to lock into what is referred to a rear naked choke. it is used in ground fighting and in martial arts. it cuts off the blood supply. these inmates likely saved deputy moon's life. >> the guard was not seriously hurt. his alleged attacker was locked up on drug charges. japan has been the home of baseball fans.

a missing baby's ordeal is over at last. why the recovery of that 7-month-old girl made grown men cry. the power of prayer. ted haggard says he is a big believer. a deputy sheriff is flung to the floor and surrounded by inmates. we will show you how that violent confrontation went down and australian expected ending. i'm chuck roberts. a 7-month-old baby girl named shannon is safe and in protective custody. shannon dedrick was found in a box under her babysitter's bed. authorities are planning to charge the babysitter, her

husband and the baby's own mother in the disappearance. at an emotional news conference the county sheriff talked about finding little shannon alive. >> the search of the baker's residence began at 8:00 p.m. which included a canine search and rescue team. at approximately 9.55 p.m. shannon dedrick was found in a two by three foot cedar chest underneath a bed. understand, under the bed was the box shoved in the back and a lot of material in front of it to deceive anyone who was looking. this box had a lid on it and had a -- on it. she was in the box -- excuse me. she was in the box for almost 12 hours. >> all she had was a blanket and

a box of baking soda to hide the odor because she had soiled her diaper. so far authorities aren't talking about the mother's role in this. the babysitter was questioned in the case of a child who went missing in 1987. in cleveland the body count increases in the house of horrors. police have recovered 11 bodies, in the living room crawl spaces and back yard graves. they plan to tear apart interior walls as they search for more evidence or more bodies. a chainlink fence is a makeshift memorial with stuffed animals and flyers of 13 men and women who disappeared. relatives are asking how the gruesome scene went without noticed. sowell was held without bond on five counts of aggravated murder. 52-year-old tonya carmichael has been missing almost exactly one year.

process he lied to the white house. under his plea deal he could get 2 1/2 years behind bars. the house majority leader steny hoyer is predicting the house will pass health care legislation saturday. house leaders will have the 218 votes they need to approve this sweeping reform measure. a couple of sticking points, language on abortion and illegal immigrants. steny hoyer says it will be tight but not a squeaker. health care is getting a boost by aarp endorsing the plan which includes a government-run insurance program. president obama thanked the organization for getting behind it and hailed the ama's approval, the american medical association has given its okay. the president will be on capitol hill to lobby for the bill. two more democrats in the house when health care comes up for the vote the winners of the tuesday's special elections in new york and california. m people who oppose health

representatives has overwhelmingly passed a bill extending benefits for unemployed people for another 16 weeks. the tax credit for first time home buyers is being extended. and people who owned their home five years will get a $6,500 tax credit to buy a new home. the president is expected to quickly sign it into law. >> i absolutely agree. >> lots of people have to cut back on spending over the holidays and in general because of the economy. how are you handling this in your family? are you telling your kids richelle carey is back. what prompted this? >> people on facebook talking about having a tough time. people grad to hear unemployment benefits are being extended. they said i want to know what oh

people are handling it. what are you doing to make ends meet? how are you talking to your kids. half of american kids will live in households that will get food stamps before the age of 20. do you need to be honest with your kids? how honest is too honest? the overwhelming majority of people say, yes, be honest. some people say, no, let them be kids. they don't need to know. for some people there is a whole new normal. we sent a producer out to the street to ask people how they are handling this. >> this whole financial downfall of the economy and everything has really done a good thing where it has taken us back to the basics. i think it is a good lesson where kids are learning how to do what is important, what matters most, relationships and working hard on the value of the

dollar. >> cheryl has been holding on the phone from arkansas. cheryl, my producer tells me you believe in brutal honesty when it comes to the kids. what have you been telling your kids? >> caller: we are on the second set of kids. our original set are grown. they are on their own. we have been raising our grandchildren since they were the and 3 and they are 18 and 19. they have learning disabilities, hence the reason we have them. we sat them down and said, you have never lived without money. we have no money. we are struggling. we lost two businesses. we are in rural arkansas. we had to shut down two businesses and i am now working two jobs. i start at 12 noon and i get off at 3:30 a.m. >> there is no way to hide this

wearing camo, camouflage jacket and blue jeans. the man is a murder suspect who fled a shooting scene on campus -- i'm sorry. the shooting did not occur on campus but the search is on campus. call 911 if you see anything suspicious. this is at the university of georgia campus in athens. a teenager confessed to killing a child and putting him in a dryer admitted he molested the child. the boy molested the child and he panicked when the child threatened to tell. he drowned him in a bathtub. the victim's family is having a tough time coping. >> with things as horrible as that you have to rely on things of a higher nature. >> the child's family and friends held a vigil tuesday

breaking news out of ft. hood in central texas. there are reports of multiple deaths and many injuries in a shooting spree at the base, according to a ft. hood spokesman. at least seven people are dead and 20 others are wounded according to affiliate kxxv. one person is in cuffstody. the pentagon is telling cnn the shootings took place at two locations at ft. hood. one being a soldier processing station where the soldiers are processed to go off base and on to an off base. they don't know the other location. we don't know it yet. we can tell you that all

available ems units in the killeen, texas, area have been dispatched. effective immediately ft. hood is closed. there are many entrances to the base. that being one of the entrances. it is closed for the time being. they are executing a 100% accountability of all personnel. this is file video. that is not current video. that is something recorded earlier. a shooting at ft. hood, texas, halfway between dallas and austin. seven people dead perhaps two locations, 20 people wounded. it is not clear all or some were civilians. we will continue to pursue all new developments from that story. let's move on to this story. a 7-month-old baby girl missing for five days in the panhandle of florida is safe. shannon dedrick was found in a box under her babysitter's bed.

the authorities are charging the babysitter, her husband and the baby's own mother. at an emotional news conference the washington investigator talked about it. >> the search includes a canine search and rescue team. at approximately 9:55 p.m. shannon dedrick was found in a two by three cedar chest underneath the bed. understand, under the bed was the box shoved in the back and a lot of material in front of it to deceive anyone who was looking. this box had a lid on it and had a clasp on it. she was in the box from -- excuse me. she was in the box for almost 12 hours. in a closed box.

shannon was immediately taken to the northwest florida community hospital in chipley where she was examined by the local doctor. shannon is currently located at the hospital and we understand she is in good condition. >> can you describe the relief you felt or the team felt? >> i don't know if i can go through that again. we went to the hospital flying to the hospital. once we got to the hospital we called our wives, five or six of us called our wives early this morning to let them know that we had found the child. there's a lot of grown men crying. shedding tears. >> was there air to the box? >> my understanding is she could

get air. >> where was the child between halloween and you said in the box? >> we are still going through that at this time. we'll wind up those loose end details. >> do you know whether she ate? >> my understanding is she had been fed, she is in good condition. excuse me. that she was -- she was placed in this box as a hiding mechanism. if she thought we were coming and at any time she would place the child in the box, put her back up under the bed and put these items in front as a disguise. there was no bottle in the box. what we found in the box, she was wrapped with some items and baking powder to cover the scent of the dirty diaper. >> police say the babysitter's 3-year-old stepson went missing in 1987 and investigators

considered her and her husband suspects but were never indicted. the body count increases in cleveland in the so-called house of horrors. in the living room crawl space and in the back yard graves. they have just begun tearing about the interior walls as they search for more evidence. a chainlink fence is a makeshift memorial with stuffed animals and flyers and pictures of 13 men and women who vanished without a trace. relatives of the victims are asking how the gruesome scene without notice. one victim has been i.d.ed tonia carmichael has been missing almost exactly a year. she was buried in the back yard and had marks indicating she has been strangled. she fit the profile sowell targeted women with criminal records or drug or alcohol problems who lived or hung out

just north of kansas city police say four people are under arrest for the kidnapping and death of a 23-year-old woman. three witnesses saw three men assault carol thomas around 9:00 last night, forced her in the trunk of a car. >> we have a bunch of little kids around here and to see somebody get kidnapped and get beat down it's just not right. >> police found the car used in the abduction set on fire. they discovered a body that has yet to be positively identified. apparently it does resemble the missing young woman. he was new york's police commissioner when 9/11 occurred. today bernard kerik pleaded guilty for lying to the white house and lying on his taxes. he was nominated as homeland security secretary in 2004. during the vetting process he lied to the white house. prosecutors are recommending 27 to 33 months behind bars.

the judge warned kerik he isn't bound by a plea deal. he could sentence him to longer. majority leader steny hoyer is predicting the house will pass historic health care legislation saturday. house leaders will have the 218 votes they need. a couple of sticking votes remain, language involving abortion and illegal immigrants. hoyer admits the vote can be tight but not a squeaker. the ama, the american medical association endorsed the house democrats health care reform bill saying it is not a perfect representation of our views but close enough. the aarp has endorsed it. president obama says the backing of those two influential groups is a good indicator the bill is a step in the right direction. >> i'm extraordinarily pleased and grateful to learn that the aarp and the american medical association are both supporting the health insurance reform bill that will soon come to a vote in the house of representatives.

when it comes to the aarp, this is no small endorsement. for more than 50 years, they have been a leader in the fight to reduce the costs of health care and expand coverage for our senior citizens. they are a nonpartisan organization and their board made their decision to endorse only after a careful, intensive, objective scrutiny of this bill. >> the aarp has an estimated 40 million members over age 50. people who oppose health care reform gathered outside the capitol. republican leaders addressed the throng organized by the t.e.a. party anti-tax groups. michele bachmann spearheaded the rally which she called a house call. last week she publicly invited t.e.a. party members to swarm the capitol building to oppose the health care reform bill. breaking news out of ft. hood texas, a mass shooting

general russell honeray says it was the work of two gunmen carrying m-16s. the general says one suspect is "neutralized but the other is cornered." this information has not been confirmed. he is a very reliable source. the pentagon is telling cnn that the shootings took place at two locations on ft. hood. one is a processing center where soldiers process to go on to the base and off of the base. here is one of the entrances. all available ems units have been dispatched. ft. hood is closed. everybody is on base. there are thousands of people who work there civilian and military. they are being told to stay indoors. there are nine schools on the base. seven elementary schools and two middle schools. they are in full lockdown until they can determine there is no

10-year-old, 8-year-old and three-year-old. the older two suspect something is wrong. my son and i have medical problems. it was either get our medicine we need or pay an electric bill. and unfortunately our electric was shut off. it was put back on. but my daughter all of a sudden one night came in here with her piggy bank and handed it to me and said, here, mom. not that she overheard. we try to keep it low down. >> she just kind of knew. >> kids nor are smarter. they know what's going on because of the news. kids are watching news more and more. they know when mommy and daddy are in financial trouble. >> let me ask you that, since kids do know and kids are smarter and more in touch with things that are going on, do you think that parents have to find maybe the right level of honesty, the age appropriateness to try to explain some things? i'm not a parent, not telling you what to do. i know that's hard. is that maybe the approach parents have to take? >> i do think so. i think you have to approach on

an age level to where they can understand. my three-year-old, four-year-old, not so much. my 12-year-old, he knows you can't just go out and spend $100 on a pair of shoes even though somebody else might be able to. and they do realize that there might not be christmas this year. i've explained to my 12-year-old, we're not in the financial position to do it. and it does -- it breaks your heart as a parent to know you have to look at your kids and know that, you know, when you were younger, you know, you didn't have these sort of problems growing up. some people did, but i didn't. and my husband is in the army national guard and he was hurt. the best job he could get when he came back was working at a fast-food restaurant. >> i know. sherri, sounds like you're

texas has been passing along some information. she's been saying personnel from the post told her the shooters, we believe at least two shooters, were wearing uniforms. but that does not necessarily mean these shooters are military personnel. not necessarily. again, at least two shooters. a spokesperson from ft. hood said that one is captured. we believe according to the information most recently from kay bailey hutchison that a second shooter has actually been shot. that is the information we're work ongoing that senator hutchison passed onto to our sister network. we know the president, barack obama has been told about what is going on. white house staff is gathered in the situation room to get a handle on what's going on. >> it's also clear from affiliates, it could be timed to a 2:00 p.m. graduation ceremony that would have taken place next to -- according to this source -- next to that very building. it's a personnel and medical processing center, which would

be the place where those returning from deployment or heading out on deployment overseas or elsewhere would be processed. they would get through medical checks, paperwork done there. there have been lots and lots of stories recently about battle stress or repeated deployments. the stress that that's putting on active duty military personnel, whether that's at play here, we don't know. but again, multiple gunmen and now, as richelle just talked about, confirmed nine dead in the shooting spree that occurred just before the 2:00 p.m. graduation around 1:30 central standard time at the sprawling installation, ft. hood, texas, at killeen, texas. >> retired army general russ honore told us the guns involved were m-16. >> standard issue for every soldier. >> not certain these are military personnel. when you put together that they had those particular weapons,

beaten down, it's just not right. >> the car had been torched. they discovered a body. it has yet to be positively identified. a seven-month-old girl missing five days is safe and in protective custody. shannon dedrick was found in a small cedar box, two feet by three feet in size under a bed in her babysitter's home in chipley, florida, in the panhandle. in an emotional news conference the sheriff talked about finding the baby girl alive. >> the search of the bakers' residents again at 8:00 a.m. with a search-and-rescue team. at 9:55 p.m. shannon dedrick was found in a two by three foot cedar chest underneath the bed. underneath the bed, the box shoved in the back and a lot of material in front of it to deceive anyone who was looking. this box had a lid on it.

also had a clasp on it. she was in the box -- excuse me. she was in the box for almost 12 hours. >> how she survived as well as she did, who knows. authorities believe the aunt, who is also the sitter, met last friday and asked if she could permanently take custody of the girl. the mother apparently handed over shannon. both women face several felony misdemeanor charges. the body count increases in cleveland in the so-called house of horrors. police recovered 11 bodies from anthony sowell's home in living room, crawl spaces and backyard graves. they plan to tear apart interior walls to search for evidence, possibly more bodies. there's a chain-link fence not far from the home. it's now a makeshift memorial with stuffed animals and flyers of pictures with 13 men and women who have gone missing without a trace. the coroner's office has

identified two of the victims. relatives of the presumed victims have asked how the gruesome scene went so long unnoticed. sowell was ordered held without bond on five counts of aggravated murder. the ama, american medical association endorsed the house democrats health care reform bill saying it's not a perfect representation of our views but it's close enough. the aarp also endorsed it. president obama said the backing of the two influential groups is a good indicator. this bill is a step in the right direction. i'm extraordinarily grateful to learn that the aarp and the american medical association are both supporting the health insurance reform bill that will soon come up to a vote in the house of representatives. when it comes to the aarp, this is no small endorsement. for more than 50 years, they have been a leader in the fight to reduce the costs of health care and expand coverage for our senior citizens. they are a nonpartisan organization and their board

made their decision to endorse only after a careful, intensive, objective scrutiny of this bill. >> house democrats hope to debate and vote on the legislation on saturday. people who oppose the health care measure are voicing that across from the capital outside. republican leaders addressed the rally organized by tea party anti-tax groups. michelle bachmann spearheaded the protest. she requested they swarm the capital and tell lawmakers they oppose the bill. the house overwhelmingly passed the bill extending benefits for unemployed people another 14 weeks. the bill extends firstime home buyers' tax credit for another year. it was to expire this year. the program is expanded. it will now include buyers who have earned their current home for five years or more. they would get $6500 tax credit

back to breaking news coming from ft. hood, texas, mass shooting. at least nine people have been killed, some of them civilians. the number of injured could be as high as 30. we are hearing from several sources including a spokesperson at the post that two shooters were apparently involved. we do not know if these shooters were military personnel. we do believe they were wearing military uniforms. again, that does not necessarily mean they were military personnel. still working to get that information. kay bailey hutchison of texas told cnn a while ago one of the shooters was shot by military

police, shot by the mps, is in custody. but a second shooter, they are still trying to find. the entire post, all 350 square miles of it, locked down. nobody can get on or off that post. that includes the schools on post. this affects a lot of people. this is a huge area. the atf, fbi sent a little to ft. hood. the pentagon is telling our sister network cnn there were shootings at two locations on post. one was a processing station where soldiers process to go off the post and onto the post, back and forth, to go abroad. the other location is a theater conference center. the president is aware of this. they are gathered in the situation room at the white house to monitor the latest. we will bring you the very latest. we're also getting word there does not appear to be any suspicion of terrorism at this time. all right. let's pursue other stories today
