11:03 pm
herself did not do. get out. >> come out of the situation and look at it 3rd person. love is so blind. >> "showbiz tonight" can tell you it's a shocking interview where an emotional rihanna talks about what it was like to be caught in a painful cycle of domestic violence. >> she feels she owes it to her fans to break her silence. >> the horrific details about how brown left her battered and bruised after a fight in los angeles shocked the world this past february. there was even more shock soon after when we all learned this super famous couple was back together again. >> they reunited and she received a lot of flack about that. >> erica said even though brown's image was destroyed, rihanna's started to suffer as well when she went back. >> people worried it would send a signal to others that this is okay and something you should put up with.
11:04 pm
>> a lot of pem who experienced what i did. not in the public. >> rihanna said the ordeal she went through was a million times worse because it was so public and because she was embarrassed. >> why be ashamed? >> because i didn't want people to think that that's the kind of person that i fell in love with. that person. that's embarrassing. that's embarrassing that that's the type of person that i fell in love with. so far in love. so unconditional that i went back. >> rihanna told diane sawyer why she ended things with brown once and for all. >> when i realized that my selfish decision for love could
11:05 pm
result into some young girl getting killed, i couldn't be held responsible for telling them to go back. even if chris never hit me again, who is to say their boyfriend won't? who is to say they won't kill these girls? going back is not an option. brown is ordered not to have any contact with rihanna for five years. now rihanna's career is back on track. she collaborated with jay z and the new album releases this month. with the new interview and new cover story in the new magazine, it's clear speaking out is another priority. >> it happened to me and can happen to anybody. >> one thing that is important now is being a voice for other

women. that's part of her focus in coming out and breaking her silence and showing the world what happened to her. >> so now that rihanna is breaking her silence, will women embrace her as a model. ta nicka ray is a journalist and carlos diaz who is say correspondent for extra. i think this was a powerful and emotional interview with rihanna. how do you think she did? >> i think she did amazingly. i have interviewed her and when people were calling for her to speak out and become the voice of domestic violence, i said she is just a kid. she is so confident on stage, but she is. you talk to her like a kid. she came into her own in this interview, even at times correcting diane sawyer when she talked about how many times people go back after domestic abuse. she said it's more like eight or
11:07 pm
nine rather than seven. she came across amazingly strong and confident. >> you're right. she is only 21 years old. we have to keep that in mind. what's your take? >> i was very impressed with her. everybody wants her to speak out nine months ago when the incident happened, but she wasn't ready. i don't think even chris is ready now. this interview proved she has taken the time to look inside and listened to her supporters. she is handling it brilliantly. chris brown may want to take a note from her page. it teams too insigne seer and early to conceptualize. he should be genuine about what i feel. when i was watching her interview with diane sawyer on "good morning america," i was
11:08 pm
startled about why she left chris brown for good. watch what she said. >> when i realized that my selfish decision for love could result into some young girl getting killed, i couldn't be held responsible for telling them go back. chris -- even if chris never hit me again, who is to say their boyfriend won't? >> this has been so much speculation about why it took her so long to open up about the night she was attacked. when you hear rihanna now, carlos-t seems to me she really struggled with how her actions would affect other women involved in abusive relationships. it seemed like she was almost tormented by it. >> in all honesty, the people
11:09 pm
here and the people in a lot of places said she has a new album and that's why she is speaking out. she took the time to really consider her role in the big picture of domestic violence. if she had thrown that comment out matter of factually about she didn't want anyone else to be hurt as a result of what happened with her. it wasn't have the weight, but when you see her say that, you can almost see the emotions and her going through each one as every word comes out of her mouth. >> she has given all of this serious, serious thought and made a surprising revelation on "good morning america". she said she felt ashamed by what happened. watch what she told diane sawyer. >> i didn't want people to think that's the kind of person that i fell in love with. that person. that's embarrassing. that's embarrassing that that's the type of person that i fell in love with. so far in love.

11:34 pm
trying to upstage rihanna and trying to steal her moment? >> it's not chris that requested to have this interview that came out the same day as rihanna. this is mtv and they are competing in sweeps which is when you want the biggest audience possible. you can't blame it on chris. >> i'm not buying that he didn't know. >> believe it. you have to realize she was on the offense before he came out on larry king and he is on the defense and has to salvage his reputation. his career is in jeopardy big time. >> totally. what's your take on all this? >> i wonder three things have happened. it sounded scripted. he was on larry king and everyone said he didn't answer the question. now he is coming out and the timing is wrong. what i wonder is, is he doing all these things wrong or are we just not wanting anything to do with chris brown?
11:35 pm

11:49 pm
jessica didn't do anything for romo. >> speaking of jessica, what a difference from when she was called a jinx when she dated tony romo. thank goodness they won or she may have gotten the jessica simpson treatment. >> very lucky woman and they think it's the all american scenario and we have the great actress sitting in the stands next to jay z and her iconic parents, goldie hahn and kurt russell and i want to be there with her enjoying the game. when a-rod ran across the field and gave her a big hug, everybody loves a happy ending. >> it was like a soap opera in addition. do you think that some people may have tuned in just to see that little drama? >> i think a lot of women may have. i don't think guys did. they were too drunk by that point. i think that because it's romantic and is a great girl.
11:50 pm
she is everything you said. if she brought great energy to a-rod and he was that much better playing, fantastic. >> maybe she brought good luck. thanks. >> as we move on tonight, bottlt find a corkscrew. >> you may not be a wine connoisseur but this frenchman knows how to pop his cork and we done mean the usual way. >> have no fear and get ready to laugh. we will show you how to pop that cork using your shoe, a phone book or a toilet. unless of course you are drinking mad dog. then it is just twist off. >> more stories making news right now.

told her not to hit you so much like it is a give than any man is going hit a woman. >> and he didn't come from that. it is like alcoholism in a way like it can skip generations. i think it is terrific people who have done that, we can choose every day to joining some new tribe and i am? the one that doesn't get hit or high any more. i just feel really proud for rihanna for doing this. i think she has done it in a strong way. i don't think i have heard anything from her. i urge people to be careful about venting on one person. >> did comedy help you? is that the way you coped with all of this? >> you know what? i shouldn't say this, it only happens alone, he was actually choking me into unconsciousness and started to hit me in the head and in my head, it came in my head, i went hey, pick one.
12:06 am
i made myself laugh in this way. when we did grace under fire and tom and marcy said how would you feel about that being an aspect of the character. >> you did use that part of your character in grace under fire, which made it very effective show, i think. >> i liked it. it took years for me to stop jumping when people came up behind me. there is a lot of surprise maneuvers in domestic violence relationships. from my side, i hate the new age word, but i co--created that. i stayed for three years and danced with that. i didn't have a lot of options, but i made that part of my life at the time. >> that's interesting. >> spreading my wings in a bigger way. yes, it saved me. it got me towards comedy. i don't do the comedy of rage.
12:07 am
yes, i forgive him. of course i do. i want to say this, because i don't say this easily, either, and it's true. my ex-husband's son told me -- they do not know who beat his mother into a semivegetative state, but she lost custody of her younger child. that happened to his second wife. they do not know who did that. but his son wrote me a letter about it. >> the next wife? >> the one after me. >> i didn't press charges, he married someone else and had a child. this child is a grown man now. on one end i said if i reported him he wouldn't be here. to anybody that is in this on a receiving end of it there are so many other ways out of it now
12:08 am
that were not available when it was happening to me. >> brett stay with us. i want to bring in the rest of my panel. dr. gail? rihanna says it would happen to anyone. could it? >> you know there are probably some people that if it started happening would just walk out. there are people who are more susceptible and more able to be co-dependent on someone. it koul happen to a lot of women that think it would nfr. >> it happens to all kinds of women. >> women who appear to be very strong. women who have said i would never let a man hit me. >> and then it happens. >> absolutely. >> what do you think is the psychological explaination for being a victim? what do you say? brett, did you ever get therapy for this? did you find out anything about
12:09 am
yourself? >> i was reading "i'm okay, you're okay" when i was 11. yes, yes i did. until the person that it is happening to realizes there really are choices and there is no safety net under you -- >> there is often a susceptibility, a low self-esteem. a feeling that you are deserving a punishment. that you can pull for or need you to get connected. >> let me go to you. you are a reformed abuser. >> i do a lot of works these days around gender violence prevention. violence is a learned behavior. as i have been. we often don't realize that we are socialized to think that man
12:10 am
hood has to do with aggressiveness and violence and seeing women and girls as inferior to us. and god forbid put our hands on them. i can't tell you how many stories that i have seen and heard about women who live in fear of men in their lives who have been abusive to them. something that was said by one of your guests, the self-esteem issue is the thing that comes up every time. just this year. two of my friends who are highly professional women who you would never think would end up in these situations, both of them are better now.
12:11 am
12:15 am
the type of person that i fell in love with so far in love. so unconditional that i went back. >> that's ree ihanna saying she embarrassed that she went back to her abuser, chris brown. rita, i keep hearing the word love. is there really love or just co-dependcy? >> i think that is an interesting conversation but that is what she knew as love. and so for her, she was deeply in love with him. i think what we have to do is disconnect love and violence. if people understand that there is no violence in love, then it can't be love. >> to me the definition of love is that you care about the well being of the other person more than for yourself even. that's when you love a child you worry and care about them.
12:16 am
if you hit somebody, it is impossible to call that love. >> sometimes there are sick definitions of love. when you have low self-essteam and you want to love yourself, you try to control the other person to give you power, to love yourself more. so these are very -- self-centered people that do this thing. there is a lot of nors schism and insecurity involved. you know what? she said something so important, she was embarrassed. the shame is what keeps this problem hidden because the women realize that it reveals something about themselves. she feels week. and it's a shame. because had she been able to deal with that sooner, it would have made a bigger impact. >> and a couple things. people assume because she is this major super star that she
12:17 am
should have said something right away. she is a very talented young lady. i think she needed this time to process what happened to her. and in the workshops that i do, we talk about the dynamic of power. the need to control women and we try to deconstruct that. what i say to men is that your definition of men should be rooted in non-violence and real love, not engage in emotionally abusive relationships and you would have one that is rooted in peace and communication. when we don't have that we have a recipe for domestic violence that we see around the country in epidemic proportions? >> is it safe to say that most of the victims were abused as children? >> yes. yes, it is. >> absolutely. >> most often there has been abuse and that is their model for love. >> let me ask you something,
12:18 am
brett. >> i was not, by the way. >> you were not hit as a child? >> not at all. my mother's idea of a spanking, it was hard not to giggle. i never got struck. >> not the person who has been abu abused, but the abuser. >> the abuser. >> sometimes the person who is abused has been too, but more often sit a repetition on the part of men who have had abusive fathers. >> i want to say this about love. yes, we love them. these are not horribly bad people. they have -- and narcissism includes never being able to get enough attention. they are not all bad. i unss about her shame. embarrassed is a light word. at least she wasn't with kayne. >> listen to what else she said.
12:19 am
>> what were you doing fight back? >> i was really just trying to -- i just wanted it to stop. i just wanted it to stop. i was not interested in hurting him back. >> okay. do a lot of vicks fight back? >> well in a variety of different ways, they do. some use violence, some use very creative tactics around getting out of the house. fighting back is a relative term. i any that the interesting part, i think, is that we need to understand that people need support. >> i know what people say i seem
12:20 am
like. no, i never hit back. and the burning bed was not out then. we didn't know it happened. i want to say this. he had a rifle and he shot it at me and i heard the bullet go by my ear. i remember thinking there could not be a closer call that than. and at one point he was sleeping and i found a pipe wrench under a sink. i remember thinking about very clinically just ending it. and he was asleep. you know? we leave a million times. the awful secret of it coming to light, if that cost her something, i am sorry, but i know it is a big topic of conversation around young people now. >> we will have more about this in a minute. we will be right back.
12:24 am
we are back discussing the pop singer and abuse victim, rihanna and the wider issue of domestic violence in this country. there will be a number you can call if you need to get help. let me ask both of you for viewers at home they are listening and watching. what should somebody do if they are in the middle of an abusive situations? >> you have to get out but you have to preplan. you have to go somewhere that your spouse cannot find you. you should call the help number. they can help you get organized. you should have a sheller or a
12:25 am
friend you know you are going to. breng your kids with you if you have children. take whatever moneys you have. you must get out. you rally friends around you and you be completely silent. this is often where a man in a rage who is already trying to control you and you step out of his control will really escalate. >> you don't tip your hand at all. >> you don't but you must get out. >> brett did you do something to get out? >> yes and no. i left so much. i left a lot. you hope and think he will change. light years go by in terms of press and exposure. if you are in it, you know by now that there are places for you. if you have kids, that's something, to me, you know -- what kevin was talking about, he stopped the cycle in his life. there are a lot of guys who have
12:26 am
done that and are doing it. make it easier for people who are doing it to get help. it -- if the shoe were on the other foot it could have been me. >> did you become violent at all after this yourself? >> no. no. no. no -- i am not -- i don't have that. i have a lot of faults and things that are wrong. it takes a long time to get better. and after you leave him you are stuck with this woman who let this happen to her. and the same if you are a guy who did it. we all get new slates and i am really glad you are doing this. >> what about the guys who apologize, they are on their knees. they don't mean it? >> they might mean it at the time. they might convince themselves in the moment. certainly they will convince you. and unfortunately, that is highly rare, highly unusual the
12:27 am
man that will hit you and not hit you again. >> so the first time you get hit you should really get out. >> and i am not saying that men cannot get better but it takes a long time and a lot of help. >> there are flags that come up before that hit comes. pay attention to those mean things that they say. if something feels unfair, it is. >> what comes before that is often a controlling of you emotionally, verbally, isolating you from friends and family in an attempt to keep you away from people who you could reflect with and say this doesn't feel right. >> if it feelsicy, it is true. >> if you are being isolated, okay. >> thanks very much to all of my guests. next, we will change the tone. some three very funny ladies join me and will lighten things up. carrie prejean and a sex tape?
12:30 am
>> i think it's glaet americans are able to choose one or the other. you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage. and you know what? in my country and in my family, i think that i believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offense to anybody out there, but that's how i was raised and i think it should be between a man and a woman. >> that was carry prejean.
12:31 am
defense lawyers reportedly got a tape of her performing a solo sex act. here to talk about this are our friends. >> a conservative getting caught in a sex tape? >> they always do. a very sophisticated. >> and she is all alone in it. >> we are praying for the day tape. the self-pleasuring is mildly day. >> how did it get out? if there is another guy or woman in it. who would have released it? >> people have access to photos. i don't understand people who
12:32 am
get in front of cameras. >> you took a film piece of yourself, what would you do when you were done with it? >> that would never, ever happen. that's the point. >> i just don't understand why anybody can justify compromising civil liberties. >> she has the christian thing going on that it is against the bible or something. >> i think in the bible it says if you masturbate you will get fur on your hands or something like that. >> listen, you know what? winter is coming. i don't mind it so much. >> i know christians that are,
12:33 am
that live by the golden rule and are supportive of diversity. there are extremists. there are extremists everywhere. i would like to think that she is the exception to the rule. >> carrie got into trouble after tmz disclosed these topless pictures. she is a beautiful girl. i think she looks good. from here. it is so far away but she looks good. >> put your glasses back on. it is like a wig that has been embedded to her skull. she looks like a barbie doll. >> you have to feel sorry for someone that thinks that it is okay to be object if ied but
12:34 am
actually draws a line when it comes to two people of the same sex loving each other. >> she is not that bright. >> would it have made a difference if president obama had talked about this at all? >> president obama does oppose diskrim tory measures restricting and repealing and stripping away rights.
12:35 am
>> do you feel like obama was too quite? >> he has a million things to do. i voted for him and i campaigned for him. we want him to solve every problem. we want him to solve homelessness and hunger and i want him to lay some tile in my house. it will be legal in our lifetime. i can say that i am married to a white man. it used to be illegal for black people to marry white people. you should see our naked sex tape. >> we need to stop doing straight people's hair. we need to stop decorating their homes we need to stop designing their clothes and then we will see how quickly they come around. the drag queens are snapping.
12:36 am
>> i am pretending to be day. >> the truth of the matter is that when obama was running, he was against day marriage. so which part of that sentence do they not believe. they said no. >> he is our great half white hope and people want him to do everything. and he cannot do everything. progressives have to be patient. we have two wars and people are going nuts. >> what i hope that we see is don't ask, don't tell eliminated. that just don't work. that would be a great thing. >> and they are. >> it is always a domino effect. i think it will become a supreme court issue. just like with interracial
12:37 am
marriages, people got used to the idea. >> some people are not used to it. >> remember ted haggard? how could you forget him? talk about needing an overhaul. he was a leader of a mega church and he had sex with a male prosecute which he denied at first. let's listen to this. >> have you ever used met before? >> no. and i did not use it with him. >> did you ever have sex with him? >> no i did not. >> i think he now believes he is over his homosexuality. he is now an insurance salesman and is starting a new church in his basement.
12:38 am
>> another insurance scam. >> ted goes on as making his come back and says i have a therapyist and i asked him am i day and he said no, you just like to have sex with men. >> and he wants to have the pleasure in private but never reveal it because it is shapeful to him. >> what do you think of the down low? the dl? >> that is a very atlanta thing. it's detrimental to relationships. to women. >> it is dangerous to women. people need to come out. they need to be who they are. >> why is it that the loudest religious people are the ones
12:39 am
breaking the rules? >> they are hiding behind it because they are full of shame. they are afraid of days. they can hide behind religion. >> if somebody grand stands about something -- >> you are really smart. >> ye old down low. >> you got to wonder about people who have so much fire and brimstone about something. it's like what is her problem. >> exactly. >> i have got the schools. i love the people who say that kids can not learn about homosexuality because it will make them day. i studied geometry and i still done get math. >> they should learn on the streets. drugs, sex? it is the best place to learn about it. >> i just came from a weekend seminar from the dalai lama.
12:40 am
he said compassion is the answer and we must all live by the golden rule and global peace does not mean a world without problems but a deliberate choice to solve problems peacefully. >> i think laughing is the key to everything. have fun. >> laughing is sunshine. like you are shining light on the stuff that nobody wants to talk about. you can say the worst things, the craziest things, and people will listen to you. >> it is interesting that people like you are the ones that go to the dalai lama. i am sure that he did not have to twist your arm behind your back to have compassion. >> and then i come on nation aa television like this and i further his message. >> we have more topics when we come back. oh yes. so don't go away.
12:44 am
12:45 am
show kids threesomes. >> i encourage my own daughter to get involved as often as possible -- of course not. this is moronic. we have shows on with kate gosselin having eight kids. where is that mentality? it is out of control. >> the cw channel is saying that the show is not targeted to teens. >> my mother loves it. >> they are teenagers. >> the characters that are supposed to be in the threeway are teenagers? >> that's the promotion. >> in the episode, is there a downside? do they learn some kind of a
12:46 am
lesson? >> let me break the news to everybody here. teenagers have sex. i don't know if anybody -- like they do it. first of all, we are not encouraging it but they do. if you hide exit ignore it and fake it, you are doing yourself a disservice. teach them. use it as a teaching moment. >> i don't think most kids are going avoid it but they should be educated. >> i avoided it because i had a parent. >> you were tall. that is intimidating. >> boys ran away. >> it's education. it is a longer show. it is a longer segment. >> let me just show you some of the posters that they are celebrating in the show.
12:47 am
>> i don't think the show is doing well. >> i mean they may be a little titillated by it. they may find that -- i have to say that it is all about supply and demand. it would be great if producers took some social responsibility, you don't have to watch it. and if nobody watched it, believe me they would stop writing the show. >> no affiliates have pulled the episodes.
12:48 am
>> you mean that no one asked us? >> i have been in it before. >> you have been. >> it depends on the money. for me i played a town hall recently. if you get stuck in a whole big festival, not everybody is going come and see you. you don't get enough attention and focus. i believe to go into a city and do your own thing unless you are starting or in a situation where you need a boost. >> there are a lot of up and comers, young woman who are not at the level to play at a club. because really the festivals are not for us. we can work and book our own clubs and dates. the young women that need a break are not being brought into the system where they are being seen and exposed to people. >> what about wanda?
12:49 am
she is getting her own late night show which is unusual for a woman in comedy to have a late night show. >> i think it is great timing. people are interested in the culture. >> i didn't get it. >> i guess you already have your show. you can -- we have all been white here for a long time and in the power of position. she is funny and talented and on once a week. >> that's true. >> there is one show. there is a limitation. >> i think comedy is very cyclical. there was a time when there were mostly women stand up comedians. exactly. so, you know, it goes in cycles. >> they just did a cover in vanity fair a year ago saying women are funny and they are taking over comedy. and then you look at festivals.
12:50 am
12:54 am
12:55 am
and that comes on in january the animated stuff -- >> yes. >> that's wonderful. >> i have my music album. >> whatever it takes, it will be at joe's pub be december 26th through new year's. and i have dare, a coming of age film. one that i'm a therapist in. and i was in atlanta. >> and fran has a skin line? >> yeah. >> it's all natural and eco-friendly. >> and part of the proceeds go to animal -- >> great. >> and pafrt of the proceeds it's exclusive on hln.
12:56 am
>> are you sure that it's not better than the donny and marie osmond dolls instead? >> no, it's a great product. it's my company. i developed it. and -- no, it's not a gun for hire. it's a real deal and a perfect extension of the women's health advocacy. >> that's great. >> you're also doing stand-ups? >> i have a dvd out. i'm on tour. >> it's lit? >> lit. >> which would be so many things? >> i like that. >> i'm on tour in atlanta and then i go to raleigh, north carolina, or come follow me on twitter. >> everybody is busy working. >> that's not the next mountain that i want to climb.
12:57 am
it's not enough. >> they are talking about a lot of work. >> i don't know. there are some good ones. i just climb that mountain and it turned into plastic television. it's not something that i want to do right now. it's like nick at night all over again. >> was it hard to do a story on the jewish family? >> when we got the green light they said if we can make the character italian, that procter & gamble would buy the story outright. i said, it's not going to be authentic and we're not going to be able to do it at the specificity that we need to do it and i said, let's just do it at our pace and it will be fine. >> everybody i know is watching the show. >> i'm so glad. >> yeah. >> thank you, sandra. thanks all of you. and thanks to everybody. i mean, we're going off the air
1:00 am

1:02 am
box was a blanket and a box of baking soda to cover the odor because she had fouled her diaper, soiled it. >> if you want to see a bunch of grown men cry, tonight we rushed her to the hospital and we all call it home for a while. to let them know we found this baby safe. >> at an emotional news conference today the washington county sheriff talked about finding little shannon alive. >> this box that had a lid on it and also had a had clasp on it. she was in the box -- excuse me. she was in the box for almost 12 hours in a closed box.

1:05 am
>> the body count increases in the house of horrors in cleveland. >> 11 victims. there were six inside the house and five recovered from the yard. >> they describe it, after the fact, as a smell of death. of rotting flesh of dead bodies. >> we received a phone call from a resident that said, councilman, there's a foul odor that's coming from across the street. and it smells like a dead person. not dead meat, not dead animal, dead person. >> you could smell the stench a block away. >> literally going to rip this home apart. they're going to tear down the
1:06 am
walls. they're going on check every inch. they will make sure that nothing else is inside of this house. that there's no more evidence and for sure there are no more bodies. >> the bodies buried in the ground, decomposed eight times slower than a body left in air. so we had two in the third floor out in the air, we had two bodies under dirt, and we had five buried in the yard. so they're all decomposing at different rates. and locked inside a wooden chest. no bottle, no pillow, no stuffed toy. but miracle tonight is, there is a god. 7-month-old baby shannon alive. >> shannon dedrick was found in a 2x3 foot cedar chest
1:07 am
underneath a bed. understand, under the bed, the box shoved in the back and a lot of material in front of it. to see if anyone was looking. >> she's missing for five days and so tiny an we expected the worst. >> they learned that shannon was alive as she was brought into the room by the sheriff and gave the baby an emotional welcome back. >> cops say they found baby shannon dedrick lying in a 2x3 foot cedar box. shoved under a bed. stashed there for over 12 hours. the baby-sitter/aunt is charged in this. she has a violent criminal past. and now we're hearing and just
1:08 am
hours ago cops charged files against baby shannon's mom, the one who reported her missing halloween day. >> just hours ago investigators weren't even sure if baby shannon was still alive. now she's found alive and well, reunited with her family. >> i was immediately taken to the northwest florida community hospital here in chipley where she was examined by the local doctor. shannon is currently located at the hospital and we understand that she's in good condition. >> straight out to will glover, joining us from the panama city, "news herald." will, what happened this is and what cops to storm the home of the baby-sitter? >> caller: well, apparently, nancy, this morning a story about an e-mail that ms. baker had sent to governor charlie crist detailing allegations of abuse. had piqued the interest of law enforcement. decided to prod them along. to go out to ms. baker's house out in rural washington county. >> right. >> caller: about 8:30 last night, they went in and received consent to search the house. at the back of the bed and
1:09 am
pushed back behind things and no one could see them was a 2x3 cedar chest inside when they opened the latch they found alive and well baby shannon. >> you know it's a miracle. and it's my understanding, to you clark goldband, the baby is not just a cardboard box under a bed. this child was in a wooden chest. take a look at this. locked down. it's like a cedar chest. and nothing to eat. nothing -- of course she can't eat. only seven months. no bottle, no toy, nothing. in fact, they had put baking soda in the box because the baby would poop and the baby had been in this box for many, many hours locked inside a box, clark goldband? >> ten to 12 hours, nancy, what law enforcement are saying.
1:10 am
and you are right, that is a thick two-foot by three-foot chest and you have to wonder exactly how much air that child had been getting, although law enforcement did say in a press conference the child did receive some form of oxygen. >> joining me right now is a very special guest, kandis boyer. this is baby shannon's grandmother. ms. boyer, thank you for being with us. >> caller: thank you. >> where is the baby tonight? >> caller: well, she is safely in the arms of a wonderful couple in a medical house. she is in the custody of the state of florida. and she's just in wonderful health. she has a clean bill of health. and she's beautiful. i spent three hours with her today. >> and i understand you have quite a drive to get to your
1:11 am
little grandchild. how far did you go to get to her today? >> caller: yes. today, well, it took us about 14 hours to get here. 875 miles. >> 700 miles. grandmother -- >> caller: 800. >> 800 miles. nearly 900 miles. she's driven to get to this baby. ms. boyer, whose mother are you, the mother or the daddy's? >> caller: chrystina mercer is my daughter. >> she is behind bars tonight. why in the world would she want to give the baby to the baby-sitter? >> caller: well, as confused as tina is, i -- i have to tell you, she is emphatically stated that she did not and would not ever harm her child. and in my whole heart believe that she was manipulated into this situation. >> what about it, marc klaas? what do you think, mommy manipulated? >> well, i -- it's against every maternal extinct i've ever heard of to give up your child and then report it missing.
1:12 am
this is one the craziest stories i've ever heard in my life. >> well, all i know is, this, marc klaas, this baby is alive. but it has been locked for 12 hours in a wooden chest. no bottle. no toy. nothing. police find the baby. today washington county sheriffs, congratulations! we are taking your calls live. with us, baby shannon's maternal grandmother. mommy behind bars with the baby-sitter who has a record of her own. >> she was in the box for almost 12 hours in a closed box. shannon was immediately taken to the northwest florida community hospital here in chipley where she was examined by the local doctor. shannon is currently located at the hospital and we understand that she's in good condition.
1:16 am
the story of baby shannon, the 7-month-old baby girl, missing in the florida panhandle five days is now safe and in protective custody. shannon dedrick was found in a cedar box under a bed in her baby-sitter's home in chipley, florida. >> at approximately 9:55 p.m., shannon dedrick was found in a 2x3 foot cedar chest underneath a bed. this box had a lid on it and also had a clasp on it.
1:17 am
>> authorities are planning to charge the baby-sitter, her husband and the baby's own mother in the disappearance of that little girl. >> says shannon was found in a box under the bed of susan baker, her step-aunt. they believe she had been in that box since around 8:00 wednesday morning. >> susan baker, the baby-sitter, also sending an e-mail to the governor of florida charlie christ, pleading with him just a few weeks ago to save the child. >> the family's joyous right now. >> my life will be a lot better now now that i know that she's safe. >> we rushed her to the hospital and we all called it home for a while to let them know that we found this baby safe. >> i've got in my hand here the letter that this so-called baby-sitter sent to the governor complaining about these parents. this has clearly been in the works for some time. but how do you convince the birth mother to give up her 7-month-old baby girl?
1:18 am
take a look at this e-mail to the governor. "the baby's being abused. i have seen the dad pick her up and shake her because she cries. others in home have shaken the baby. she accuses the parents smoking heavily and doing dope, dealing their food stamps for drugs, all around the baby." joining me right now, special guest, dr. robert cartwright, out of atlanta. pediatrician. dr. cartwright, if a little baby, this -- i mean they told me when i brought the twins home, not to even have somebody that smoked around them because it could induce s.i.d.s., sudden infant death syndrome. and here they are smoking pot, according to this source, and heavily smoking cigarettes around the baby, that we know of, much less shaking the baby? >> absolutely. this is something that really is outrageous and we really encourage parents nor smoke around their children. certainly that applies to certain regular cigarettes but smoking marijuana is even that much worse.
1:19 am
are there certainly plenty more chemicals and toxins that are in marijuana smoke as compared to cigarette smoke. neither is good. we certainly than cigarette smoke is a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome as you have mentioned. it's a risk for other infections. nasal issues. asthma, other lung diseases. >> and you know, dr. cartwright, the list goes on and i will not even mention the fact that the baby is locked inside this cedar chest. you know back out to you, will glover with the panama city "news herald." a lot of e-mails and phoners are calling in that this looks more like a coffin. what about that, will glover? >> caller: i would agree. it's very small. it's more like a -- almost like a larger jewelry box, if you ask me. and she tucked it back there and apparently would put the baby there every time the cops would inquire about anything. >> this is just sick.
1:20 am
we are talking your calls. out to diane in florida. hi, diane. >> caller: hi, nancy. i love your show and your twins are beautiful. >> thank you. >> caller: my question is, exactly how will they have shannon breathing in that locked box? >> good question. what about it, will glover? how was the baby breathing? >> caller: there apparently were holes that were poked into the wooden box that would allow the baby to breathe and of course now the baby was also found under a bed, back against the wall, with stuff covering the surrounding ,you know, surrounding this chest. >> this is a miracle. this is a miracle. look at this baby. rosy, keep it on a full screen. look at the baby. she's absolutely gorgeous. when i think of what could have happened to this child -- and out to you, pat brown. it sounds like they poked holes in the box like it's a fifth grader's science experiment with a bug or a rat and you poke holes so it can breathe.
1:21 am
>> well, exactly. this baby-sitter wasn't concerned about the baby. this is an object to her. whether it lives or dice, doesn't matter as long as she gets to play her game, get attention and do what she wants. >> bethany marshall, remember the baby-sitter's little 6-year-old stepson's body has never been found. >> i think this baby-sitter had a preoccupation with getting the baby away from the mother in order to have the mother's attention all to herself. i've treated women like this in my practice. and they're envious of babies. they resent them and they want to get rid of them.
1:25 am
we are the proud papas of a little girl. this is shannon lee dedrick. we found her safe. we do not usually get to that happy ending that we have had happen here today. if you want to have seen a bunch of grown men cry, tonight when we rushed her to the hospital and we was all call it home for a while, to let them know we'd found this baby safe. >> i did the same thing. i came running out of the room. i said baby, baby shannon is alive. i couldn't believe it. and you know what, he's right, marc klaas. this is the exception to the rule. this never happens. >> well, it happens
1:26 am
occasionally. let me tell you, nancy, that the klaaskids search team was integral in recovering this little girl. >> really? >> prior to going into the house, our dog handlers brad and we're very proud to have been proud of. >> and i'm proud of you, marc klaas along with the washington county sheriff's office. there is a miracle. with us tonight special guest kandis boyer, this is shannon's maternal grandmother. ms. boyer, what is your daughter telling you? >> caller: actually, my daughter's not telling anybody anything. she's denying this. she said she let her care for the child and that was it. >> well, then why did she had care for the child then why did she tell police she didn't know where the baby it was she had given the baby over just to be cared for?

although we don't know exactly what triggered this tragic shooting at ft. hood. we do know, sort of, what was going on in his mind when he pulled two handguns and started firing wildly into this crowd which is here at this readiness facility here at ft. hood. >> i was told they were m-16s, is that true? >> caller: no, it's handguns. the m-16s is what the infantrymen would use. since he's a major, he's a navy officer, they were two handguns. >> so they were not m-16s. >> michael, how many dead? >> caller: total of 12 dead including major hasan. that death toll is probably going to rise later this evening. there were two of the people who were wounded who are in very critical condition. one woman who was apparently shot in the face. >> oh. >> caller: reports that she may have already passed. we're trying to confirm that, but nancy, expect the death toll to rise tonight. >> and let me ask you this, did hasan have a family he was leaving behind, if he were to deploy to iraq? >> caller: that's not clear yet.
1:32 am
i know he's from virginia. he comes from -- apparently he comes from a family that's an islamic family. they did not approve of him joining the army. i do not believe he had a family that he's left behind. but you know that's all going to come out as the investigation continues into this. >> with us michael board, woai newsradio. and michael board, very quickly, at first the media was told that there were three shooters, but it's my understanding there's only one, hasan. >> caller: that's what it looks like. there is still one person who is being questioned, but several people that were questioned earlier today have already been released. it looks like major hasan was the only shooter. >> okay, everybody, we're taking your calls live. i want to go back to baby shannon's discovery. we'll bring you the latest regarding the mass shooting at ft. hood, that's killeen, texas, as it comes in. as you know, 31 shot, 12 known dead. many of them in critical condition. the hospital tonight. i want to go back right now to the maternal grandmother of baby shannon. she's with us tonight. kandis boyer, but first unleash the lawyers. mickey sherman, veteran criminal
1:33 am
defense attorney, author of "how you can defend those people?" and renowned attorney out of new york, richard herman. let's see, sherman and herman up on the big screen. there they are. all right, herman, i don't know what you're -- thanks. i don't know what you're smiling about, but i would like to know how you can weave the story of mommy was manipulated. she didn't know what was happening. >> well, first, let me thank marc klaas for doing an incredible job discovering, helping in the discovery, five days after the report of missing. that's phenomenal. thank god there's a healthy baby here. this is -- >> herman, please answer the question. >> this is an aunt who has this baby in many occasion business in the past. the baby's slept there. >> put herman on the screen. not a locked wooden chest. >> nothing more than a family
1:34 am
member taking a child for a period of time. they got it wrong. baker. >> really. >> baker is a hero. >> yeah. >> let me ask you this, sherman, where does the 911 call from mommy fit in. >> i'm not so sure she's a hero. these are wacky people, simple as that. >> that's your defense. you are going to stand in front of a jury and say, they're whacky. >> all prosecuted based upon the result. thank god that nobody got killed or nobody's dying here. >> you know what -- >> okay. >> -- b.s. and i am holding my tongue, all right? don't start trying to tell me there's not a prosecution because the baby happened to live. you know what, that is thanks to god. this is definitely a miracle. but huh-uh. no, no, no. they can be forgiven while they are behind bars. but what i want to figure out and the grandmother is with me. kandis boyer has driven nearly
1:35 am
900 miles to get to her baby granddaughter. ms. boyer, you just told me that your daughter, baby shannon's mother, has said, "so many different things." like, what? what she saying? >> caller: for one that she didn't know where her child was. for two that she did not harm her child. and the stories were always different. she's very confused. very confused. and you know, but we're going to stand behind my daughter. i love my daughter deeply and we're behind her 100%, no matter what she has to go view? right. well, she is very, very lucky to have you for a mother, ms. boyer. but i don't see how those stories are different. what does she say in one story that was different from another story?
1:36 am
>> caller: well, for instance, she took the baby out for a walk at one time, went for a walk, came back, didn't have the baby. another story, 30 seconds later would be i went for a walk at this time and came back and put the baby to bed, woke up, she was gone. just so many different stories that -- it's unbelievable how confused my daughter is. >> go ahead, mrs. boyer. >> caller: but she's always -- she's always had this confusion, mentally confusion problem. she's always -- she's been numerous counseling over the years. she needs help and she's going to get the help she needs now. >> ms. boyer, is the man on the birth certificate actually the biological father? because we've been told he's not. >> caller: i do not know that. >> just to get food stamps. >> caller: i do not know that at all. i do not know that at all. >> back to you clark goldband. now those are different stories. what was the story they told police when they made that 911 call? >> well, the mom told law enforcement, simply, that she went to sleep around 3:00 a.m. woke up around 11:00 a.m. shannon was gone.
1:37 am
even though she was sleeping in the same room just feet away. >> okay, pat brown, you're the criminal profiler. mommy manipulated? >> it might had been manipulated but i'm also seeing pathological lying. it's not a matter of confusion it's the problem, you try one story and you get that, that doesn't sound too good and you change your story. i knowledge that she went with the haleigh cummings story because it worked for them so she's thinking this will work to me. >> to bethany marshall. psychoanalyst. author of "deal breakers." joining us out of l.a. i'm not buying it? >> no. >> this grandmother is standing behind her daughter and i appreciate that but i do not believe what the girl is saying because she's told so many different stories and the story she told police is completely -- a completely third edition. now we're hearing she wanted to get rid of the baby so she gave the baby away. >> i think this baby's mother has a long history of acting confused to her own mother in
1:38 am
order to avoid responsibility for what she's really done. and in this case what she did, she gave her own baby away. she had no maternal extinct as marc klaas said towards her own child. i think she allowed herself to be manipulated by the other woman who resented the intrusion. >> what, i have to take issue with that. >> yes. >> you don't allow yourself to be manipulated. if you're allowing yourself to be manipulated, you're not manipulated. you're going along with a scheme. and bottom line, this baby nearly died, stuffed into of what looks to be a wooden coffin hidden up underneath a bed, draped with material, covered up
1:39 am
so police can't find it. this was not a matter of giving the child away to be adopted or else they would have not lied to police and put the baby in what looks to be a coffin. out to the lines. celiste in texas. >> caller: hi, nancy. >> what's your question, dear? >> caller: i batch your show all of the time and i appreciate what you do and god bless the men who found that baby but one of the questions that's been answered about the baby's abuse, but you look in that baby's eyes and you can tell that it's not a happy baby. a happy baby has happy eyes and this baby does not have happy eyes. >> good question. dr. cartwright, you've looked at the baby via film. how does the baby look tour, quickly. >> well, it certainly looks somewhat healthy but i would counter the argument that this child is really healthy. the child looks malnourished. the child has a large head compared to the rest the child which would indicate a lack of nutrition. and i would agree with the caller. i think that the child's eyes don't look that great. >> we'll be right back with dr. cartwright taking your calls. but tonight, our family album. here are photos of the twins. lucy and john david. this is immediately after their birth. and i do not believe that they would be turning 2 this week if not without your prayers. and in connecticut, here's vicky and 2-year-old daughter eva dressed as a tiger for halloween. texas friends. high schoolteacher shelly and teen daughters margaret and macy. cheerleaders. a beautiful wedding photo of georgia friends chris and robin. looking on, connecticut friends of the show. linda, brian, kayla, michael and friends, jazzy and rooster. they never miss a show.

violence. there were six inside the house and five recovered from the yard. >> we did not -- that's not to say that we won't go back there tomorrow. at this point, i have to believe that we will dig a little deeper because of the skull and we need to find out where the rest of the body is at. >> straight out to dan haggerty. i understand now that the police think that 14 more missing women may be dead at the hands of former marine sowell? >> well, right now we know from his house in cleveland, it's 11 bodies. we keep saying 11 bodies. ten bodies and one skull. police are back at the house tonight and they will be back there tomorrow and the next day.

know how that feels when the days -- time just seems to stop and everything just seems to blend together. >> right. >> exactly. >> tell me about your little girl. would you please tell me about her? what was she like growing up? >> she's always been a beautiful person to me, of course. very lively, very active, very fun-loving, outgoing and friendly. i used used to tell her, don't be so friendly to people that you doempbt know but this was the way that she was. growing up i had to kind of watch it, keep a tight reigns on her but she grew up to be a lovely adult. she had three children who he was carrying for by herself.

that they are going to be doing some forensic work on computers that they may have obtained from their home that will then be able to tie the victim to sowell. and this is primarily what they are going to be doing. as a result of the dna evidence that they may be able to have and further evidence that comes out of this case, they may be able to build quite a case against this monster. >> you're right, bill. and to you, dr. cartwright, a lot of these women are skeletalized. how can they ever make an identification? >> certainly if you can get ahold of dental records, that would help to identify that person person. also, there is dna still to be found in any tissue and even where they can --
1:56 am
>> i should have thought of that, dr. cartwright, the dental records. i want to go back to barbara and denita carmichael. what are cops telling you about this case, about sowell? >> that's just it, nancy. we have not spoken to any police officials from cleveland or we're going to try to get in touch with them for you tonight. >> thank you. >> everyone, let's stop. army specialist awarded the campaign metal commendation medal. he loved outdoors, hunting, making others smile. and richard, american hero.
