good morning to you. i hope you had a good night. i'm robin meade. we have to start with a story that's just horrible this morning that soldiers at ft. hood are searching for answers after a shooting rampage allegedly of one of their own. we've got exclusive insight on the suspect as news breaks arise on the death toll. more information is still coming in this morning. we have learned that a 13th person has died in that horrific shooting at ft. hood.

30 are hurt. military officials now say the alleged shooter, a u.s. soldier, is alive and in stable condition. earlier reports had said that major nadal hasan was dead. last night they lifted the lockdown so family at ft. hood could finally reunite. and this family does not take for granted that their daughter survived. >> i feel for the families that lost loved ones, and i'm praying for them, and i know that, you know, my daughter is okay, but there are a lot of families that don't have their child tonight, their spouse or, you know, and my heart goes out to them. >> i'm sure the parents that won't ever have that call again will have that feeling that i have, though. they know their child was doing something for the country and

that they're very proud of them. the hurt would still be there, but they would be very proud. >> i can't imagine. overnight a swat team raided the apartment of the alleged shooter in killeen, texas. local police are helping the fbi search hasan's place for clues about a possible motive. why? here's what we know about the suspect. he was born in virginia and was a graduate of virginia tech. hasan is 39 and of jordanian a sent. he used to work at the walter reed medical center. a man said nadal used to come in for coffee and donuts every morning. the store owner tells a cnn producer that hasan often chatted with him when he stopped in. >> there was one exchange which really stuck out in his mind.

like i said, this was a regular customer, but about a week ago, he came in and seemed to want to talk. he knew the store owner had been overseas and was also former military, and he expressed to him specifically that day he was worried about his upcoming deployment. and he expressed that he had a problem -- judging the religious conflict, but as a fellow muslim and someone of faith, he had a problem of having perhaps the opportunity in the future to have to shoot or kill or injure or fight several muslims and that was something that was weighing heavily on him. >> well, hasan's cousin spoke for his family yesterday because major hasan's parents have passed away. he said -- about a half hour from now, we are expecting the military officials to update us on what they have found. they still have not released the

names of those killed or injured. of course, we're going to bring you that news conference live as soon as it happens. now because we are "morning express," why don't we cover the other stories at the top of your mind today. emergency health for nearly 2 million out-of-work americans is on the way. president obama will sign the bill today extending the jobless benefits up to 20 additional weeks. let me just say they've extended it before up to 79 weeks total. melissa long here for jennifer westhoven. let's talk about today's extension. >> we have the president expected to sign the bill today after it passed the house and senate this week, and it will extend benefits in all states for 14 weeks. and then in states with a rate higher of 18.5%, you're going to get an extra six weeks of benefits. the bill could also boost the housing market because it extends the first-time homebuyer tax credit to june 30. it also extends a credit for

current homeowners to buy a home if they've lived in their current home for at least five years. again, a possible stimulus for a very troubled housing market. and possibly three fronts, because we're going to tell you how businesses may also get a break under the new bill. that's coming up in ten minutes. >> melissa, thank you. the h1n1 virus is now the most dominant flu in the world. that's from the world health organization. it has seen more cases in europe and parts of asia. in the southern hemisphere, the number has dropped as summer starts there, but some officials say even in the summer, they see a lot of cases compared to the regular flu. a mistrust of police could be slowing the process of identifying 11 bodies found in a sex offenders home. correspooners in cleveland have identified six women, but they need more family to come guard with dna samples. suspect anthony sowell is being

held without bond. his charges include five counts of murder. new this morning, president obama's health care plan has lost some ground with americans in a new research opinion poll. 45% of those asked favor the plan, but 53% opposed it. that's a 9% increase since october. but 59% felt they should continue working on changes to the health care bills. by the way, the house takes a vote on the bill on a saturday. the police are having a hard time sorting through, i don't know, a thousand pieces of stolen luggage they found in a couple's home? cops found 14 rooms filled from the floor to the ceiling with stolen clothes and belongings, so the chances of identifying who everything belongs to, they think, is pretty slim. >> none of the luggage has any i.d. tags. so as soon as he was taking it from the belt, he was taking all identifying marks from it.

>> police say keith king and stacy lynn legg king have been taking luggage from the airport for at least a year. airport officials say they're going to continue putting the security there back into effect. you don't say. they're accused of taking the stuff? did you ever do anything with it? >> was it like a fetish thing? are they looking for underpants or what's the story there? >> he says it. hi, bob. >> it's kind of strange. what's going on, rob? i want to start across the tropics right now because we're still watching ida. it is interacting with land in the nicaragua-honduras border. it is throwing a lot of rain especially on the coast of honduras right now. this situation will emerge back into the water, and once that

happens, it has a chance to restrengthen just a bit. i want to show you the path of this as it heads over cancun over the weekend and mid-week next week, it's in the gulf of mexico as a tropical storm. i want you to look at this because we're not done with hurricane season yet. this is something we'll be watching over the next couple days, especially the florida coast, alabama, mississippi. it looks like it's bending just a bit, so we have the weekend to watch this thing. as for the rest of the country, low pressure building right now south of nova scotia. breezy conditions are out there. winds are going to come back around and hit you in florida again from the ocean so another day of high tides. a little light rain around portland, also around the adirondacks. the wind will affect you, especially in new york and boston. we'll talk about that in a bit. video in pompano beach, florida. that's what it looks like there. also for the weekend, the risk

of rip currents are out there. that's because of the wind just blowing the ocean ashore and not letting it get back out again except in small channels. that's the rip. that's dangerous to swim in, no doubt about it. >> when does hurricane season end? >> november 30 is the last day. so 5% of all tropical activity is in the month of november, so it's kind of rare to see something like this. >> thanks. we should be learning some more details about a deadly shooting in ft. hood. actually, in just a few minutes because a news conference from the military post will start in about 20 minutes, and we'll take you there live. coming up first, though, we're going to hear from the families of some of the victims of the shooting who survived. but right now in our salute to the troops, i know a lot of you want to send your thoughts to the families at ft. hood after the shootings, so that's what we're going to do today.

more now of our breaking story in texas. a u.s. soldier suspended of a deadly shooting in ft. hood is in custody and survived being shot several times during the rampage. at least 13 people were killed and a dozen more were injured. the shooting happened about 50 yards away from a military

graduation happening on the post. about 600 people were in a nearby auditorium during the attack. well, the mother of a soldier who was injured in the shooting was actually relieved to find out that her daughter is alive. >> i didn't think that i would hear about this here. she's being deployed to iraq december 7, and i thought i was more worried about her going over to iraq than here just doing training in texas. she just got there yesterday. >> the names of the victims have not been released yet. a hotline has been set up for those who may have loved ones in ft. hood. and do remember this number is for families only. a bill that extends jobless benefits will give businesses a break as well. so it's a two-part story here. melissa long is in for jennifer westhoven. we talked about already for some people it would extend their jobless benefits up to weeks

here. 79 weeks plus. what would it do for businesses? >> there are many layers of this bill, because not only does it help people out of work or people worried about losing their jobs, it also helps potential homebuyers and businesses. it helps businesses turn losses into cold cash. it would let businesses apply losses from either 2008 or 2009 to any years prior to 2008. does that make sense? the relief funds from the government are eligible for the tax break, and any funds in the fifth year would be reduced by half. here's good news toe digest in a troubled economy. the stocks cloegsd above on saturday. the dow skplt nasdaq saw the biggest one-day percentage gain since july 23rd. and it looks like you've been spending more in stores.

retail sales surged last month. you have retail sales, and one of the reasons, apparently people are buying shoes. they rose more than 2% in stores open for more than one year. bob, keeping an eye on the skies today. bob, i don't know if you gave me a trick chair, but it keeps going down, down. >> oh, yeah, forgot to tell you about that. it's going to be a bumpy ride traveling to the northeast today. a lot of wind and it goes through the atmosphere, especially where you're flying. a lot of wind out there potentially for new york city metros. boston and orlando, gusty winds, too. then we're looking at rain, especially across the west coast. full details on that in a bit. back to our breaking news.

we're leerng moarning more abou trained psychiatrist accused of killing a dozen soldiers.

frightening hearing that. that is what thousands of families heard yesterday on the post as major nadal hasan, a psychiatrist trained to help others with combat stress, opened fire yesterday. one official said soldiers took immediate action, cutting up

their own uniforms trying to use them as bandages. a colonel who lost his own son during the shooting said it could have been even worse. >> i don't think anybody can comprehend what goes on in someone's mind during a tragedy like this. all i know is my soldiers that were at the site, like well-trained soldiers, acted very professionally and kindly, and there were some heroic actions that took place at that soldier processing site that i think actually saved lives. >> law enforcement officials tell the associated press that hasan was on their radar, actually, at least six months ago because of some alarming internet postings. suicide bombers, where solers do throw themselves on their colleagues. a formal investigation wasn't open until yesterday's shooting, by the way. in other news, people whose loved ones were sickened eating

salmonella-tainted peanuts cannot believe someone hasn't been prosecuted yet. investigators found roaches and mold there. the company is now bankrupt and they are cooperating with the investigation. the l.a. doctor's owner takes another turn. rafer has details now. >> i feel bad, but it's just -- >> juicy! >> it is. first, owner frank mccourt fired his wife jamie after he says she allegedly had an affair. well, jamie filed for divorce and then sued to get her job back. a court commissioner ruled against her. however, frank has agreed to let her have access to their malibu home with use of the swimming pool from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

the suspect in the shootings in ft. hood is alive. major malik nadal hasan was shot several times but did survive and was taken into custody. this is contrary to what we were being told yesterday. what you're seeing here is exclusive video of what a sales clerk says is hasan, but is that the right video -- at a convenience store. it's a different man. i think he walks in and he's wearing white. yeah, you know, that's the wrong video so let's take that down.

anyway, that person was saying he came in there a lot. a texas jury has convicted a positi polygamy leader. he was convicted for sexual assault with an underage girl. he could face up to 20 years in prison. . ♪ one love, one life >> u2 gave a free mini concert in berlin. the concert was to mark 20 years since the fall of the berlin wall. the wall fell in 1989, ending 30 years of east-west cold war division. those are some of our headlines this morning. i hope you are doing well. good to see you again. i'm robin meade. some of the families of those injured at ft. hood are talking about it. one soldier's uncle says his

nephew was shot in the calf and the hip. he was serving two tours of duty in iraq and was getting ready to leave for afghanistan. he told his uncle he was getting the shots when it happened. >> the next thing you know, there was a lot of shooting going on, and he hollered to some other people that were in the room with him to follow him, and they escaped out a back door. >> live to ft. hood now because a press conference is starting. let's listen. >> a single shooter who was ultimately shot and subdued by our first responders. it, the number of victims killed remains 13 and 28 injured remain hospitalized. this continues to be a cooperative investigation with both state and federal law enforcement officials. the outpouring of support from federal, state and local agencies, local community

members throughout the country has been exceptional and we at ft. hood greatly appreciate it. the army is providing the post with additional grief counselors, chaplains and public affair support to ensure we're able to give our soldiers, faem families and civilians the most wide-ranging care possible. we are continuing to focus on three main areas, and the first one is being care for the wounded, and i will let carl braverman address that before i continue. >> yesterday we had great support within the community and the hospital structure here at ft. hood in order to take care of our folks. we had great first responders, ambulances, helicopters from throughout the area. we had combat seasoned emergency department personnel and

surgeons here at darnall army medical center who were able to triage, treat and transfer as necessary the soldiers who were injured yesterday in the attack. approximately half of those who were hospitalized required surgery and all are stable today. our focus today is going to be on those soldiers who are continuing to require medical care from admitted patients. they are both in our hospital here at darnall as well as three other community hospitals in the area. we also will focus on the behavioral health needs of our soldiers and family members and other folks in the community. we have more than 200 health providers here on ft. hood. they will be supplemented by the stress control units by the 85th

brigade stress control unit. we have behavioral teams who will also be augmented from staff by brook army medical center and the sun regional medical command, and we have people through the community through our humana partners with the southern tri-carey regional office this morning. so we are capable of reaching out to anybody who needs it as we assess what's needed down the road. >> so they're talking about right now their focus of caring for the wounded after this horrible shooting yesterday where 13 people were killed at ft. hood. one of the things they just said that kind of stuck out in my mind, they talked about how the response came from combat seasoned personnel. you know, that strikes me as

something that had to have made the response so swift. they're talking about people who have been to war, so they really got in there right away and ripped up their own clothing and used them as bandages trying to help their fellow soldiers where the unthinkable happened, police say, where one soldier turned and victimized 13 people dead and about 30 hospitalized. and the grief counselors are spreading throughout the community. so we'll continue to monitor that, and we'll stay on the developments of that live press conference. because we're "morning express," i know you like to have your news pretty quickly here, so let's go through some of the other big stories of the day. our producers will monitorty that press conference and get you more nuggets out of that after this. a rare saturday meeting, by the way, on a $1 trillion health care overhaul. both the aarp and the medical

association endorsed the legislation. republicans rallied with tea party movement protestors on capitol hill, signalling opposition. on the way home from the world series championship, the manager of the yankees pulled over to help somebody who didn't even know who he was. i love that part of the story, rafer. >> yes, george girardi heading home when he spotted a car that had crashed along a remote part of the city. girardi saw the car still jutted into traffic, and he parked to help her. here's her reaction when she learned who he was. >> he left, and one of the officers came over and said, do you know who just helped you?

more now on this breaking story out of ft. hood, texas. response for blood donations from the local hospital following the shooting spree at the army post was so great that some people are being turned away. the hospital says they will call for more donations in they need them. the death toll now is at 13, and new information from the press conference we've been monitoring is that of the 13 dead, one is civilian, 12 are soldiediersold. ft. hood houses service members and other civilians as well. cnn foreman looks at the crime

scene. >> about 40,000 troops live there and 17,000 families live on the post. this is where the shootings took place. the fellow we're looking at so closely tonight and wondering what exactly he might have been involved in worked only about a mile away from here, right down here at darnall hospital. so there is going to be an awful lot of looking at his job down here, the people who knew him here, how he got up there, why he was up there, how he happened to have weapons on him if this all plays out that way, and how this came to be the story that it was. >> well, military officials are still trying to find a motive, a why for the reason of the shootings. a lot of you have said you want to send your thoughts to the families at ft. hood after yesterday's shoogtd, so that's going to be our salute to the

health issues. what his family says happened to him during his military career.

we have just lerpd this learned that morning that 12 sole jersz and onecyville van died at ft. hood. a news conference there just wrapped up a few seconds ago. they say the military is now notifying the families of those killed. they also say that the suspect, major nadal hasan, is in stable condition. he was shot multiple times. his family says he told them he wanted out of the military since 2001 because he was taunted for being a muslim. we heard from his neighbor, his former neighbor in maryland, that says he lived there apparently with his brother. >> it's strange that this other guy would do this. i would never have believed that. because he seemed so calm, and he was never upset with anything whenever i saw him. i'm shocked. i'm really shocked. i mean, all these years -- i think they've been living there years, and nothing has ever happened like this before, so i'm really shocked that he would

do something like this. it's creepy because you think somebody is really nice and you think somebody is really calm, and i don't know what led for him to do that, but -- what triggered it, but honestly, they seemed like really cool, calm guys. >> dr. hasan treated fellow soldiers for post-traumatic stress, and one of his patients said he was one of the best psychiatrists he ever dealt with. but a doctor who worked with hasan at walter reed medical center painted a different picture. he said hasan required counseling and supervision during his internship because he had problems interacting with patients. in these tough economic times, we could all use a little bit of the money codes, right? deanne and heather need a little help planning for college, so money expert clark howard has this advice for them. >> my name is dan, my name is heather. and we need a money coach.

we started saving for college and we're not sure we're doing enough. we started with a 529 plan and just put a little bit of money in there, and of course with the economy, the market going down, we lost money on that and decided to into the florida prepaid tuition. we'll be paying on that for foou years. that only covers tuition. >> we hope we're doing the right thing but the way the economy is going we've decided to withhold putting any money in the 529. dan and i both paid for our college with student loans and other things that sort of hindered our opportunities now. obviously we want to avoid that for him. our question is, what more can we do to save for our child's college education? >> dan and heather, you've got a lot of mouths to feed. two kids, a third on the way. you do oennly what you can do. you two handled your own college. don't have a case of the guilts if you can't pay for your kids' school.

let's get more on our breaking story this morning out of texas. a u.s. soldier suspected in the

deadly shooting at ft. hood is in custody and survived being shot several times during the rampage. at least 13 people were killed and a dozen more were injured. military officials say that of the 13 dead one is a civilian, 12 are soldiers. the mother of a soldier who was injured in the shooting but survived was relieved to find out her daughter is still alive. >> i didn't think that i would hear about this here. she's being deployed to iraq december 7th. i thought i was more worried about her going over to iraq than here just doing training in texas. she just got there yesterday. >> the names of the victims have not been released yesterday, but a hotline has been set up for family members of those who may have loved ones at ft. hood. these are the numbers on your screen, but please keep in mind that this hotline is set up for family members only. so we talked earlier about a bill today that would extend jobless benefits. well, turns out it gives businesses a break as well.

melissa long is in for jennifer. how does it do that? >> well, we'll explain that now. president obama is expecteded to sign this today. it would allow businesses to turn losses into cash and it comes down to filing your taxes. the bills will allow businesses to apply losses either from 2008 or 2009 to any five years before 2008. so they can get an irs refund on the taxes they have paid. now, there are two exceptions, big ones. first, no business that took bailout rescue funds from the government is eligible for this tax break. that's from the troubled asset relief program or t.a.r.p. second, any refunds for taxes in the fifth year, they would be reduced by half. and here's good news for you to digest this morning in a bad economy. the stock market closed above the 10,000 mark on thursday. the dow jumped more than 200 points, the nasdaq also growing almost 50 points, both the dow and nasdaq saw the biggest one-day gain since july 23rd

that is what thousands of families at ft. hood heard yesterday as a crisis was unfolding on the post. military officials say that major nidal hasan, a psychiatrist trained to help other soldiers with combat stress, opened fire on his colleagues. one witness says that soldiers took immediate action, cutting up their own uniforms trying to use them as bandages. a colonel who lost some of his own soldiers in the shooting says it could have been much worse. >> i don't think anybody can really comprehend what goes

through someone's mind in a tragedy like this. all i know is that my soldiers that were at the site, like well-trained soldiers, reacted very professionally and calmly and there was really some heroic actions that took place at that soldier processing site that i think actually saved lives. >> law enforcement officials tell the associated press that hasan was on their radar at least six months ago because of some alarming internet postings. the postings equated suicide bombers with soldiers who throw themselves on grenades to save their colleagues. officials had not determined for certain if hasan authored the posting. a formal investigation was not opened until yesterday's shooting. you know, in our salute to the troops, a lot of you want to send your thoughts to the families at ft. hood who might be watching after yesterday's sho shooting. tina writes, my heart

a sales clerk says this is major nidal malik hasan just hours before the horrific shootings. milling tear officials say hasan was shot several times when he opened fire yesterday but survived and was taken into custodied. military officials described what happened when hasan was shot. >> when he started shooting, there was first responders who were called and, again, this is where officer munly showed up

and initial indications are very quickly met and had the confrontation with him, both exchanged fire and both were wounded in that exchange. and that happened relatively quickly when she arrived. again, her efforts were superb. a texas jury has convicted a polygamist leader in the first criminal trial linked to the raid on the yearning for zion ranch loost year. raymond jessop was found guilty, could face up to 20 years in prison. we just learned from nato forces that two of its soldiers have been missing in afghanistan since wednesday. we're not sure if the shoulders are from the united states. nato said they disappear on a routine resupply mission. those are just a few of our headlines. good morning. i'm robin meade. we have to get back to this breaking story here. actually, there's another

breaking news story that i want to talk about. unemployment has hit the double digit mark. hate to hear that. the government says that the october unemployment rate hit 10.2%. now, in september it was 9.8%. we were just right there. i think it's a psychological thing, getting into the double digits here. melissa long is in for jennifer westhoven. she's crunching those numbers right now but we wanted to get the numbers to you as awful as they are right away. above 10%. some of the families of those injured at ft. hood are talking about it this morning. one soldier's uncle says that his nephew was shot in the calf an the hip. he had served two tours of duty in iraq and was getting ready to leave for afghanistan. he told his uncle he was getting his shots when this happened. >> the next thing he knows, there was a lot of shooting going on and he hollered to some other people that were in the room with him to follow him and they escaped out a back door.

>> as many as 25,000 people could be at ft. hood, it's huge, on any given day. one soldier says she feels lucky because she was supposed to be in the area when the shooting happened but ended up not being there. >> it definitely felt like a close call. you know, i started thinking, you know, the what ifs, what if i would have gone there, what would have happened if i was there, how would i have reacted or maybe i would have been the unfortunate one. >> recapping right now what we know about the shooting at ft. hood, the suspect a u.s. soerl soldier is in custody and survived being shot during the attack. the soldier was scheduled to be deployed to afghanistan. 13 people were killed of them 12 were soldiers, one civilian. the names of the victims have not been released. we being of course, will stay on top of any developments in the shootings here. because we're morning express, why don't we cover some of the other big stories happening quickly today. a house vote is set for tomorrow morning, a rare

in september it was 9.8%. we've gone up a significant amount. melissa long in for jennifer, i think it's that psychological level of being in the double digits now. >> and a point we haven't seen since the early 1980s, since 1983. these numbers are higher than expected as you mentioned. much higher than we expected. first time we have seen it top 10% since spring of '83. 190,000 jobs were cut last month, the forecast was for 175,000 positions to be lost. you may be wondering, i don't understand. we're hearing that we're coming out of the recession. we have the economy growing at 3.5% from the quarter july to september. you may not understand because that's a strong signal that the recession has ended. why aren't employers' figures reflecting that? you have to look at employment as a lagging indicator. people are slow to hire once again. employers really aren't expected to start adding jobs for a few months. again, employ considered a

lagging indicator of the economy. we're looking at these rates, again, seeing unemployment double digit figures we have not seen since spring of 1983. one other big stories, unemployment benefits extended to americans that bill expected to cross the president's desk this morning and he is expected to sign it after it's passed through the house and senate. here is a story that may help you to breathe a sigh of relief as we're hearing about all of these disappointing figures, 10.2% unemployment. there are some on the brink of foreclosure that this could help. there's a new program out, fannie mae says it will allow eligible homeowners to rent their homes for up to one year. it's called the deed for lease program. it would allow homeowners to transfer the deed voluntarily back to the lender. then they sign a lease to stay in that home. the program is for people who are just not eligible for modifying their loans. this is not a part of the obama administration's plan when it comes to the mortgage mess, but as you know the white house has

been really leaning on fannie mae and also freddie mac to try to help out with this foreclosure crisis. again, the big story right now, again, we have unemployment at double digit figures we haven't seen since 1983. thank you so much. gosh, those are horrible numbers. 10.2%. and for some people, the last month it was 9.8, it's gone up four ticks here. but still it's that psychological level. our breaking story today, the military psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people and injuring 30 others may have been dealing with his own mental health issues. what his family says happened to him during his military career.

more now on our breaking news this morning from ft. hood. the army says that the accused shooter had received orders to go to afghanistan. the commanders say that major nidal hasan was shot mult imtimes and is in stable condition. his family says he told them he wanted out of the military since 2001 because he was taunted for being a muslim. a convenience store near ft. hood says that this is

dr. hasan in the surveillance tape. hasan treated fellow soldiers for post-traumatic stress. one with of his patients says he was one with of the best psychiatrists that he ever dealt with, but a doctor who worked with hasan at the walter reed medical center said that hasan required counseling and supervision during his internship because he had problems interacting with people, patients. the soap opera surrounding the divorce of the l.a. dodgers owners takes another turn. hi, rafer. >> it is too bad that the late great aaroni spelling is no longer with this. he could do so much with this. my apologies to the mccourt family. i know you're going through a tough time, but it is interesting. after frank fired wife jamie as team ceo because he says she allegedly had an fair with her chauffeur. jamie sued to get her job back. a commissioner ruled against jamie, however, lawyers say frank did agree to her having

survivor stories now and what it was like inside a building in ft. hood when shots rang out yesterday. we know it was 12 soldiers and 1 civilian who died. authorities are investigating whether they were shot accidentally by somebody trying to take out the gunman. here's a doctor who's treating some of the patients. >> the majority of the patients obviously that came through the e.r. unconscious or intubated or breathing tube placed in the field or another hospital. i was able to speak briefly to one of the young patients toward the end of the episode and he was obviously quite distraught but said that he was in the center there where they were being cleared for deployment, and an individual jumped up on a desk and started shooting weapons. >> incredible. jumped up on the desk. the commander at ft. hood also recounted survival stories that he heard when he visited the hospital. >> i met a young man who had been shot four times and with a

fairly large caliber weapon. and he was one tough, young man and basically recounted the incident. i also met a young lady who was shot and basically didn't realize she was shot. became involved in helping carry other soldiers out from the shooting area and taken them to medical care. took off her blouse and put a turn yet on another shoulder's leg and then finally when she was finished realized she looked down at her own hip and realized she was shot. >> incredible. military officials say the shooter is alive and in stable condition. you might remember that earlier reports said major hasan was dead. in this morning's news conference, they blamed the chaos at the crime scene for the mix up. last night officials lifted the lock down of ft. hood for families reunite. two moms say they don't take it for granted that their daughter survived. >> my prayers are with the families that, you know, lost loved ones.

and that, you know, i'm praying for them and i know that, you know, my daughter's okay but there's a lot of families that don't have their child tonight. their spouse. or, you know -- and my heart goes out to them. >> i'm sure the parents that will never have that call again will have that feeling that i would have, though. they know that their child was doing something for the country and that they're very proud of them. the hurt would still be there but they would be very proud. >> so some of the new information that we just got in was that there are reports that the suspect jumped up on top of a desk and started shooting. here's what we know about himment he was born in virginia and a graduate of virginia tech. hasan is 39 and a jordanian descent, a psychiatrist licensed in virginia. he used to work at walter reed medical center and received

injured in the shooting was relieved to find out her daughter is alive. >> i didn't think that i would hear about this here. she is being deployed to iraq december 7th and i thought i was more worried about her going over to iraq than here just doing training in texas. she just got there yesterday. >> names of the victims have not been released yet. a hotline is set up for family members of those who may have loved ones at ft. hood. these are the numbers and do keep in mind that this hotline is set up for the family members only. the owner of a convenience store in ft. hood says that the man he knew at major nidal came in for coffee and hash browns regularly. he released this video exclusively to cnn and says it shows hasan just hours before the shooting. the store owner tells a cnn producer hasan often chatted with him when he stopped in. we are hearing from the family of the alleged shooter. his cousin released a statement

on the way now. president obama's going the sign a bill today that would extend the jobless benefits another additional 20 weeks. now, that would be melissa long, on top of the total that some people are getting? >> yes. it's an extension and also very welcomed news, robin, as you know considering the news of this morn that the unemployment rate climbing to 10.2%, a rate we haven't seen since 1983. so today's bill extends the jobless benefits in allstates by 14 additional weeks. people that live in states with unemployment rates of higher than 8.5% get additional 6 weeks of benefits on top of that. meantime, we have the president, mr. barack obama, today signing the piece of legislation for the $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit through june 30 and current homeowners to buy a new home if they've lived in the current home for at least five years. and we're all looking for some good news, right?

in a very troubled economy. and on a morning with a lot of disappointing news, looks like you're spending more in stores. retail sales surged last month to the best performance since april of 2008. retail sales rose more than 2% in the stores that have been open for at least one year. two california cities are using different ways to keep type ii diabetes from ravaging their communities. dr. sanjay gupta takes a look in this week's "fit nation." >> reporter: drugs, prostitution, gang violence. all of it plagued this park in chula vista, california, a year ago. nearby in mesa, california, students were walking to school with no sidewalks. what do the two situations have in common? both of them preventing residents from being physically active. a critical problem in two border towns with above average obesity and diabetes rates.

>> the community and the environment, they really do affect peoples' risk for diabetes because it's a life style thing. even if you're genetically predisposed you can do a lot to prevent if you're exercising. >> reporter: how do you fix it? with local high school students, latino community organizers with money from local government a lot of hard work. >> the conditions of the park a year and a half ago were not the same conditions that you're looking at right now. >> the reality is that if you have to walk on a dirt road in summer in california, you're not going to want to and at least with the sidewalks, you know, it is more comforting environment. >> reporter: two different towns. two different solutions. but both projects are showing results. what started as school projects for aaron and jirard may become careers. >> my goal is to go to college. i want to be a civil engineer. >> i definitely want to continue doing things like this in the future. >> reporter: meantime, they both

>> just hearing that alone makes your heart drop, doesn't it? that's what thousands of families at ft. hood heard yesterday as a crisis was unfolding on the post. military officials say that major nidal hasan a psychiatrist trained to help other soldiers with combat stress opened fire on his colleagues. one witness said that soldiers took immediate action cutting up their own uniforms for bandages a. colonel that lost some of his own soldiers in the shooting says it could have been worse. >> i don't think anybody can really comprehend what goes through someone's mind through n a tragedy like this. all i know is my soldiers that were at the site like well-trained soldiers reacted very professionally and calmly, and there was really some heroic actions that took place at that soldier processing site that i think actually saved lives. >> you know what? one of the new pieces of

information from a witness anyway was that the suspect jumped up on a desk and started firing yesterday. law enforcement officials are now telling the associated press that he was on their radar at least six months ago because of some alarming ber net postings. the postings equated suicide bombers with soldiers who throw themselves on grenades to save their colleagues. officials had not determined for certain if hasan is the one who authored the postings and a formal investigation sadly was not opened until yesterday's shooting. you know what? wait until you come here and see this video. a women's soccer game got ugly as it looks like the same player kept going after the other players and the refs never saw it. you can see it. >> yeah. the refs never saw it. >> yeah. >> college students. young girls look up to, robin, and it is inexcusablinexcusable. by ourks with new mexico in a tournament. follow number 15 for new mexico. elizabeth lambert in the back,

okay. the new york stock exchange is open for business now. the stocks could be headed for a rough friday after we just learned this morning that the unemployment has gone up to 10.2%. painful. in minutes we'll take you to the trading floor. first though, our breaking story. the suspect in the shootings at ft. hood is alive. he survived it. this is exclusive video now of what a sales clerk says is major nidal malik hasan at a local convenience store hours before the shootings. military officials say that hasan was shot several times when he opened fire yesterday but he did survive. he has been taken into custody.

13 people were killed in the attack. more breaking news, this time about the unemployment rate which i mentioned. it's hit the double digit mark. the government says that the october jobless level hit 10.2%. we'll talk more about that and what it means in business. we just learned from nato forces today that two of its soldiers have been missing in afghanistan since wednesday. we're not sure if the soldiers are from the united states. nato says they disappeared on a routine resupply mission in the western part of the country. so that's just a few of the stories we're working on. i'm robin meade. morning to you and welcome. let's go right back to the story, more details about the accused ft. hood shooter. this is more video from that same convenience store that we just showed you. the owner says that major nidal hasan told him he didn't want to be deployed because he would have to fight fellow muslims. his family says he was trying to get off the military since 2001

because he was taunted about being muslim. ft. hood's commander says that major hasan had options. >> there is such a thing as a valid objector status but there are many american muslims who serve our armed forces very honorably both in iraq and afghanistan. so i think -- i think there's a mechanism there to identify those who are in fact objectors. >> several groups condemned the shootings. quote -- we are still hearing new and incredible survivor stories and what it was like inside the building when the shots rang out. we now know that 12 soldiers and one civilian died. 30 are injured. authorities are investigating whether any of them were accidentally shot by someone trying to take out the gunman.

here's a doctor treating some of the patients. he is giving up a glimpse of what it was like in the room at the time of the shooting. >> the majority of the patients obviously that came through the e.r. were unconscious or had been intubated or breathing tube placed in the field or at another hospital. i was able to speak briefly to one of the young patients toward the end of the episode and he was obviously quite distraught but said he was in the there center there where they were cleared for deployment and an individual jumped up on a desk and started shooting weapons. >> we're going to stay on top of all -- any developments in the shootings at ft. hood. because we're morning express, you expect some news pretty quickly, some other headlines so let's go to those right now. first off, new this morning, president obama's health care plan lost some ground with many americans. and a new cnn/opinion research poll, 45% of those asked favored the plan and 53% oppose it. and that is a 9-point inkreens

since october but 59% felt that congress should continue working to make changes with the health care bills. by the way, tomorrow, the house takes a floor vote on their bill on a saturday. the two northwest airlines' pilots who overshot minneapolis by 150 miles might be trying to get back in the cockpit. now, this is video of one of them. the ntsb says that they appealed the faa's decision last week to revoke their licenses. faa says they put their passengers in serious danger. the pilots have said that they got distracted doing crew scheduling on their laptops. 34 minutes past the hour. i feel like i'm more stuffed up as the morning goes on. let's talk to meteorologist bob van dillen. >> i think it is the dry air, rob. >> you think? >> dry across the eastern nation and the middle part, too. until you get to just about the northwest. here's your cold front dropping down through portland, towards

spokane. the clouds ahead of that. big, puffy clouds, cumulus showers, showers there. behind it, the nature of the clouds around the pacific ocean. that's an indication of very cold air over the relatively warmer waters of the ocean and clear indication of satellite and radar, too, the white is all snow above 3,000 feet. cascade mountains, looking for a foot of snow by this time tomorrow. as for northern california, it is all rain around the eureka rada radar. more rain through portland and then stretches all the way in towards seattle. puget sound, rain. spokane, more rain moving into the direction as it gets in toward idaho later, too. the tropics, want to show you this because it's something to really be concerned with next week. it's area of low pressure, ida, tropical depression up to the north. 35-mile-per-hour winds. has a chance to restrengthen and that could be a problem because

by the middle part of next week might be a tropical storm in the middle of the gulf of mexico. florida, alabama, mississippi, will have the low down on that on monday. more in a little bit. >> thank you. >> yeah. all right. yesterday the dow surged. there was some upbeat economic news. today, i think a completely different story. i'm not going to say upbeat at all. i wonder how investors are reacting this morning to news we are in double digits when it comes to jobless numbers. >> not favorably, to say the least. the dow industrials down 50 but not a huge loss at this point. it was an unexpected jump in the unemployment rate but it's a scary headline and not entirely unexpected. economists saying for months that unemployment will top 10%. so, you know, they expected it to happen just maybe not this early. even though the job losses are high, the pace of layoffs is slowing. compare 190,000 job losses that we had in october to the 700,000

job losses we saw earlier this year. all right. jump to earnings from today. we heard from aig. they made money for the second quarter in a row. more than $450 million and this is the company that got the big e bail yut from the government and owes about $90 billion. ache's core insurance business is stabilizing and the company says it's trying to sell assets to repay the government but aig still has a sizable portfolio of troubled assets. aig shares are right now down about 8%. despite rising unemployment, americans, though, they still have the extra cash for a cup of joe. starbucks' quarterly profits surged to $150 million. more people visited the coffee house than last year and they're spending more money when they get in there. starbucks' shares are up 4%. and finally, the book wars are spreading into new territory. walmart cut prices on some new dvds to $10 and within hours of amazon.com and target matched so

more details now on a shooting that happened yesterday at fort. hood. some of the families of those injured there are talking. an uncle says the nephew was shot twice and served two tours of duty in iraq and getting ready to leave for afghanistan. he said he was getting the shots when it happened. >> it actually he knows there was a lot of shooting going on. and he hollered to the other people that were in the room

with him to follow him and they escaped down a back door. >> breaking news we have just gotten a picture of one of the heroes in this rampage. come and look. this is kimberly munley. but kimberly is a civilian police officer who shot the ft. hood gunman four times. ft. hood's commanding general says she is a trained active first responder who acted quickly after she just happened to encounter the gunman. the officer was wounded herself in an exchange of gun fire with the gunman. so this is a photo that we just got. she is obviously on the left there. and it just happens to be a photo where she must have been attending a concert with dirks bentley. the son of a florida prison inmate said he never had a reason to be proud of his dad until now. his father was among a group of inmates who rushed to help a prison guard after another inmate attacked him. the inmate had the 64 yeerd guard in a chokehold.

>> proud. real proud. finally did something good. >> really? >> something to be proud of him about. >> seeing him struggle, it's been hard, but this is something that's good. hopefully it will change things up. give him a second chance. >> that's touching to hear. the jail said that the guard ken moon was not seriously hurt and at home recovering now and the sheriff's department says it is going to write letters on behalf of the inmates that they can use in court. when holly robinson petee's father and son were diagnosed with brain disorders, she didn't back down. meet her this week's true break through woman. >> you might recognize her from "21 jump street" but holly robinson-peete's most important

see dr. hasan in this surveillance tape. he treated fellow soldiers for post traumatic stress and one of his patients says he was one of the best psychiatrists that he ever dealt with but a doctor who worked with hasan at the walter reed medical center said he required counseling himself and supervision in the internship with problems interacting with the patients. listen to this story. on the way home from the world series championship, with the team just won, the manager of the yankees took the time to pull over to help somebody. hi, rafer. >> hi, robin. yes. and this person had no idea who this man was. >> that's the best. >> which makes the story even better. now, of course, talking about joe girardi. girardi was on the way home from the team's celebration after the yankees won the world series and spotted a car crashed along a busy curving stretch of highway outside of the city. the car was still jetted in traffic and girardi was concerned, parked, crossed three lanes of traffic to help the
