study that found students are ranking considerably lower on empathy. that really shocked me. i think that says a lot. the second and linked question is i did not hear any of you say, except for glenn on the end -- several of you mentioned words about connection, collaboration, etc. but i did not hear any of you mention how groups and communities learn, and how societies learn. to me, that is linked with empathy. amounted to throw out the question. >> when i talk about the need to help young people work in groups because you learn so much from each other, i do not disagree with you. i think the success across disciplines is that we work with building community, helping them help each other. that involves understanding how

students have to be able to work and sustain a family. i am going to mention the minorities. we have of them almost in every class. the students are not worried about having, but worry about being. i would submit to the members of the ppnel this question. how successful are you about identifying those minorities who want to be -- who want to know who is living and who was dead, and schopenhauer and einstein and all of those and greece and rome, even if they are not in those fields but they want to know about that? are you worried about that? what are you doing about it? >> you want students to study

history and literature and philosophy, and to ask the questions about what life is about. the best education, quite frankly, has to be that broad education. >> it is not about training or technical education. >> it is the humanities and the arts. those things are very important. >> we have reduced our education courses by 25% so our students can take more courses in the arts and sciences. >> let us thank our panel. and conservative party leader david cameron field questions from parliament as the head of the coalition government. sunday night at 9:00 on c-span. >> president obama traveled to louisiana yesterday to talk with residents and officials about the government's response to the gulf coast oil spill. he gives his weekly address from there and discusses the effect of the spill on the livelihood of those who live in the region. following him, you will hear the gop address from republican national committee member michael steele, who calls for an investigation into reported job offers by the white house to democratic primary candidates. >> i am speaking to you from louisiana, one of the first places to feel the devastation brought by the oil spill in the gulf of mexico.

i was here at the bait shop. i met with a group of local residents and small business owners. this is the time of year when an oyster fisher normally aren't a lot of his income. but his oyster bed has likely been destroyed by the spill. jerry vegas has a similar story. he quit the eighth grade to become a shrimper with his grandfather. he works long, grueling days to earn enough money to support himself year round. today, the waters where he spends his years are closed to him. every day this bill worsens, he loses hope he will be able to return to the life he built. you can put a price on a lost season, but not a lost heritage. the effects of the spill reached beyond the shore line. i spoke with a woman who owned a small convenience store for 30 years, a store opened by her

father. she depends on the sales generated by tourism season. this year, most of the boats that would lie in these stocks are nowhere to be seen. the owner of the sand dollar marina and hotel has been hit hard as well. this time of year, rooms are usually filling up. he too has been devastated by the decline in tourism and the suspension of fishing in waters off the louisiana coast. their stories are familiar to many in grand isle and threat the gulf region. dimly have been here for generations, earning a living and making a life tied to the water -- the magnificent coast and the natural bounty. here, this bill is not just image livelihoods. it has up ended whole communities. the theory people feel is not just the money people have lost. they have been through tough times before. it is the recognition that this time their lives will never be the same.

these folks work hard. they meet their responsibilities. because of a man-made catastrophe, one that is not their fault and beyond their control, their lives have been thrown into turmoil. it is brutally unfair. it is wrong. i told these men and women and said from the beginning of this disaster that i am going to stand with the people of the gulf coast until they are made whole. from the beginning, we mobilized on every front to contain and clean up this spell. i deployed 17,000 national guard troops to aid in the response. more than 20,000 people are working around the clock to protect the walkers and coastlines. we have convened hundreds of top scientists and engineers from around the world. more than 1900 vessels are in the gulf, assisting with the cleanup. more than 4.3 million feet of boom have been deployed. we have enough to stretch over

1,300 miles. 17 staging areas are in place across louisiana, mississippi, alabama, and florida. in short, this is the largest response to an environmental dissster of its kind in the history of the country. we have also ordered bp to claim -- to pay injury claims. we will make sure they pay every dime of it to people along the gulf coast. the small business administration has stepped in to provide loans and allow deferrals of existing loan payments. this week, the federal government sent bp a preliminary bill that was $69 billion to pay back american taxpayers for some of the cost of the response so far. in addition, after an emergency safety review we are putting in place aggressive new operating standards for offshore drilling. i have appointed a bipartisan commission to look into the causes of this bill. if laws are inadequate, laws

will be changed. if oversight was lacking, it will be strengthened. if laws were broken, those responsible will be brought to justice. over the last few days, bp has played with their wealth. they are -- has plugged that there well. -- has plug theige their well. we are prepared for the worst, even though we hope the peace efforts will bring better news. regardless of this attack, there will be slippage until the relief wells are completed. there will continue to be a these are hard times in louisiana and across the gulf coast. louisiana has seen more than its fair share of trouble. i have seen communities determined to fight to this disaster, as they have before, to preserve not just a way to make a living but a way of life. we will fight alongside them

until the awful damage that has been done is reversed, people are back on their feet, and the great natural bounty of the gulf coast is restored. >> president barack obama promised he would not stop fighting to open up government and that he would have the most transparent administration in history. it is one thing to keep that promise when you think it will help you politically. the real test of a man's word is if he keeps it when it is inconvenient, embarrassing, or potentially damaging. on this test, the president has failed. we have a law that prohibits federal officials offering things of value to people for political gain. it is called transparency. white house efforts to use political appointments to entice candidates out of contentious primaries goes against the obama's administration's claims of openness and transparency. congressman joseph sestak --

efforts of the white house to mislead. the clinton white house offered a job in return for dropping his challenge against arlen specter. the white house denied it. the white house finally conceded that some conversations happened but their message was "trust us. it was not inappropriate. move on -- nothing to see here." this did not pass the test. it is not up to the white house to judge the ethics of their behavior. that right is reserved to the american people once all the tasks are on the table. demand for these fact continues. after three months of intense political pressure, we were served with a memo from the president's larger admitting that contrary to previous denials the white house did in list former president bill clinton to offer an allegedly unhedged -- allegedly unpaid

position. the memo raises more questions than answers. the law does not prohibit a offers of only paid positions. offering an unpaid position does nothing to exonerate bill clinton or white house chief of staff rahm emanuel. sestak would not be able to accept the position and remain in congress, which cast doubt about whether this was the job the white house offered. the memo claims multiple conversations between clinton and setstastak in june and july. the congressman insisted there was only one conversation. who is lying? the president alleges that president obama new nothing about any of these conversations. why would the white house unless a high-profile surrogate like former president bill clinton on multiple occasions without the knowledge of president obama for

month-long negotiations about a low profile on page position -- unpaid position to a congressman who could not accept the job anyway? this is only part of a long tradition. andrew romanov was charging the democratic incumbent for a nomination. he was offered one of three jobs if he would drop out of the primary. the white house first denied the allegations when they came from anonymous administration whistle-blowers, but once the actual e-mail was released by runoff -- by romanov, the story changed. the jobs were offered, but nothing inappropriate happened. after all the stonewalling, what is the latest defense? it was just business as usual. enough is enough. if from emmanuel
