just as democrats and fighting to hold on to their majority in an election are ready defined by mistrust of washington. ethics is one of the issues that concern -- november election -- the federal page of "the washington post" has this headline. also the front page of "the wall street journal" has this had line. birmingham, michigan, mike on
7:04 am
the republican line. which issue will impact your vote in november? caller: yes, it well. i want to thank c-span for what you are doing. as a republican, i am very much disappointed how much -- the things the republicans are doing. you can't vote against extending my on and on the benefits and then both -- vote for the continued tax reduction for the 2 percent of the rich. i think i will have to go with the democrats this time because the republicans have turned into a party of no, no solutions for anything. just hating, hating. it doesn't do anything. i was just talking to my son --
7:05 am
he is happy because of that attitude is that, you know, he is 24 and now he's got a couple of years of extended health benefits. i just think the republicans are not doing anything for the people and they are just raising sand and coming out of any type of solution. host: we will go to barbara, kansas city, democratic line. caller: good morning. i was calling to comment on your subject this morning. i would like to say that my biggest concern eased jobs. i have a couple of daughters who are out of work. one worked really hard to finish college while she was pregnant and had the baby at the same time she finished. so it is disappointing for her. i would like to say that that is why i and going to vote for barack obama party began, the democrats, because i feel he is working very hard to try to solve the problems while the republicans of doing nothing to
7:06 am
help at all. they are like petulant children. i would never vote for a republican anyway now that i see exactly how they are because they are just, they don't have the country's best interest at heart. they are very selfish people. i don't know, they just, i just don't understand where they are coming from and a lot of them that are poor or and lower middle class, they vote against their own best interests. host: lettuce and from an independent. re from georgia. what do you think -- let us hear from an independent. ray of georgia. caller: i am thinking the irs is wrong. the classified american workers as not pack -- capital -- you are either a farm animal, slate, or communist. host: what does this have to do with the november elections? caller: there is a candidate in georgia and he is running on that issue, for the united

7:08 am
saying jobs because they don't want to say private sector jobs. the important thing is to put private sector on jobs because all of the stimulus jobs to be created are going to the government, and they're asking for more and more pay and they are driving taxes up on the property owners. and all of these jobs and still going to have their high pay at the end of this recession, and it is not really helping the private sector. the practice should be private sector jobs and not these big government jobs from the stimulus. host: back to the democratic line. georgia. good morning. caller: i am voting democrat because i am sick of the republicans blocking everything that they tried to get accomplished in congress and they've got no solutions for no problems. and all they do is come on their

7:14 am
host: let us go to carl in chicago -- are you there? how will you vote in november? caller: democrat. host: why is that? caller: right now i am looking at what is happening and i am not sure that people realize what the republicans and business is doing. working totally against the interest of this country. they are fighting against even trying to do anything on their part to step up and help the economy. $2 trillion and they will not hire anyone, and we -- a lot of these republicans need to look at this and understand that they are working against the interest of this country. we are supposed to be together when things are bad but they are working against the american people and people need to see that. thank you. host: front page of "the washington post" below the fold.
7:15 am
it is a piece about paul ryan, a republican from wisconsin. quoting him here. considering the road map -- his idea for battling the deficit -- an electoral disaster. he does not speak generalities about reducing spending but does acknowledge their real cuts in popular programs that will be required to bring down the debt. front-page story in "the washington post" about paul ryan and his ideas. there is a side story that has bullet points about what he thinks need to be done to cut the deficit, if you are interested in reading that.

connecticut, ross, a democratic ally. good morning. caller: i am going to basically repeat what the last person said but just expand on it, too. when it comes to job creation, which so many people are obviously concerned about, number one, you have to remember that a lot of people who have a lot of money and what the republicans to win our in the position to hold back creating jobs. they can't is essentially -- they can essentially hold a gun to the president of the united states. they can simply not create jobs until the republicans get back in power again. then they can say look at what the republicans before creating jobs. same thing for the tax increases that are going to be coming up at the end of the year. again, i see them holding a gun to the government of the united states and blaming everything on the tax increase and setting it essentially we are not going to
7:17 am
create any new jobs until -- saying essentially what are not going to create any new jobs until we have the tax that we have now. i hope people remember that. called the ethics issue came up on the sunday shows yesterday -- host: the ethics issue came up on the sunday shows yesterday and nancy pelosi was asked about her pledge to train of the swamp of ethics scandals. here is what she had to say. >> where perhaps you might lose the majority. >> we don't see it that way. we are very proud of the agenda we put forth to the american people. our recovery package, we have twice as many people unemployed as there are now if we had not moved forward. these actions are all controversial because we were digging our way out of a deep ditch. so we have been legislating over the past 18 months, get big in

7:20 am
can change this. we just need to have faith and we need to stand up and take action to get our country back. host: john boehner, minority leader in the house, was asked about ethics and what is happening on capitol here -- have -- capitol hill and this is what he had to say. >> talk about draining the swamp -- you heard me say this that i expect in the american people expect the highest ethical standards from their members of congress. nancy pelosi said four years ago that it was time to drain the swamp. and i cannot believe it has taken some two years to investigate the charlie rangel case. but the fact is, she has not kept her promise. the swamp is alive and well. host: jamie on the democratic line in a lexington, kentucky, what issue will impact your vote? caller: integrity. host: ok. why? caller: i rather be -- runner

for congress be honest regardless of how painful it might be. i think that is what the american people lack today. that is why i support barack obama. he did say it would take a long time to change how washington does business. he has gone against the lobbyists. the businessmen are kind of angry at him. and i think because people need to wake up and see what our president is trying to do for all people. yes, he says he wants to spread the wealth. the top 1% to 2% of the people over the last 10 years to 15
