first if we may, i am going to provide with you some of the details of what happened. kind of a thumbnail sketch. and then we have the person in charge of the f.b.i. for the state of arizona. nate (inaudible), the last guy was (inaudible). we have nate. this is a day of personal sadness for many of us in this room. people like dr. (inaudible) the seventh surgeon general of the united states, and a deputy for some 25 years. he will follow nate, and answer any questions that you may have referenced medical issues. this morning around 10 a.m., congresswoman giffords was

having a townhall type of meeting outside of kind a strip mall, outside of safeway grocery store. there was no indication of any problems. but at about 10 minutes after 10, a gunman approached and started shooting. congresswoman giffords was shot once in the head. she is still alive. and the surgeon in charge is cautiously optimistic that she may survive. five people were killed. one of whom, two were personal friends of mind, including congresswoman giffords. one being a federal judge, john

roll, who this morning got up like every saturday morning. went to mass, because he knows gabrielle very well, and decided to come around the corner and say hi. unfortunately he was in the wrong place in the wrong time. i never had met a more sincere, fair-minded, brilliant judge or any judge for that matter for my whole life. john roll was on the federal bench and then a prosecutor and we have the county prosecutor, one of the finest human beings i have known in my life. he was a frequently attendant at daily mass at cathedral. and this morning he went to mass, and was going to go home and do the floors, which he

always does on saturday. congresswoman giffords was an incredibly gifted legislator. she still is. she's one of the nicest human beings that has ever been planted on this earth. not only brilliant, she's works from dawn to dawn, basically. and she cares about what really happens in this country. she's not about democrats or republicans, she's not about politic. all she cares about is the united states of america. and today, i want to tell you, i hope that all americans are saddened and as shocked as we are. and i hope that some of them, or most of them, are as angry as i am and a lot of us are. and i think it's time as a country, that we need to do a

little soul searching. because the rhetoric that we hear day in and out from people in the radio business, and some people in the tv business. and what we see on tv and how our youngsters are being raised. that this has not become the nice united states of america that most of us grew up in. and i think it's time that we do the soul searching. two brave individuals at this crime scene tackled the suspect. he was a white male, 22 years old, and at this point we are not able to divulge his name. he's got kind of a troubled past, i can tell you that. and we are not convinced that he acted alone. there is some reason to believe

that he came to this location with another individual. and there is reason to believe that the other individual in some way may be involved. i know all that doesa pique your curiosity but based on the advice of legal counsel we can't give more. we would like to find this person and have pictures and hope to provide the public with that. at this point i will turn the microphone to nathan gray, the f.b.i. representative for arizona. and i would like to thank all the federal agencies, all the public safety agencies, the fire, the police, the medical people that have responded to this. and just incredible,

professional fashion. we are overwhelmed by the professionalism exhibited by the agencies involved to come together to work this very sad case. thank you. >> thank you, sheriff. first and foremost i would like to express my deepest condolences to the families and friends affected by today's tragedy. i would like to express my condolences to the families of john roll, chief judge of arizona, and representing gabrielle giffords. our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved. the f.b.i. is working in every aspect in this joint investigation. and utilizing all resources necessary to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. i would like to thank our federal, state and local

partners who have played such an important role in today's events. and those efforts continue. as this is an ongoing investigation, it would not be prudent to comment above any details discussed by the sheriff. as new details are provided, we will provide those. the events today not only affect the citizens of arizona and the families involved but touch those in the united states, thank you. >> i can tell you there are 19 victims in this case. five of whom are dead. one including a nine-year-old girl. six? we now have six deceased?

>> no. >> i think you heard that we have six victims that are deceased. so if you have any questions at this point, we will try to answer them as best we can. but keep in mind as stated, it's very difficult for us to talk about judiciary issues. we have state crime involved and legal experts for the guidance. but to talk about specifics will be difficult. if you have questions? >> do you believe that congresswoman gifford was the first person shot? >> i don't know the answer to the question if she was the first person shot. but yes, i think she was the target. >> has she received threats

recently? >> i am not aware of any public officials that have not received threats. she had two unfortunate incidents consider in a victory campaign. she had a situation where someone in an angry audience dropped a weapon out of their pants. and had an incident at the same time where windows were broken out of her headquarters. we understand at her headquarters now, that there is a suspicious package that is being investigated. >> have you said anything about (inaudible)? >> i can tell you this, that the 22-year-old individual does have a criminal background. and there are reports that he

was a pima college student and there were some difficulties with him. but again i would like to say, when you look at unbalanced people, how they are, how they respond to the response coming out of the mouths of tearing down the government. the anger. t the hatred, the bigotry in this country is getting to be outrageous, and unfortunately, i think that arizona has been the capital. we have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry. >> (inaudible) was this related? >> all i can tell you that there is reason to believe that this individual may have a mental issue. and i think that people who are

unbalanced are especially victim. >> (inaudible). >> i cannot. as i understand it, no one at this point is in a life-threatening situation. >> (inaudible). >> two have not been identified. >> sheriff, were all shot? or were some injured in panic? >> no, they were all shot. >> do you have the names? >> we have some of the names that we can release. some of the families have not been appropriately dealt with at this particular point. but staff has the names, ages and so forth of the victims. >> you said that there were 19 victims. were all 19 shot? >> yes. >> what was the weapon? >> it was a semi automatic weapon. >> (inaudible).

>> we will not get into the specifics but a semi automatic pistol. >> (inaudible) background? >> no, at this point we are not able to go into the specifics of the background? >> the other person that you mentioned? >> pardon? >> the other suspect is he a shooter? >> no. >> (inaudible) in the parking lot was that elevated? >> i don't think so. >> (inaudible). >> he's in the custody of the pima county sheriff's department. >> who owned the gun? >> we are not able to go into the specifics of those issues at the moment. >> sheriff, any plan was the federal employees in the area? >> no, but it's not unusual for all public officials to get threats constantly. myself included.

and that's the sad thing going on in america. soon we won't be able to find reasonable, decent people to subject themselves to serve in public office. >> (inaudible). >> there was no security. >> (inaudible) shooter. >> i don't have them. do we have them? we don't have them here. but we know who they are. >> sheriff, it was said earlier, if i heard right. that was attack was caught on videotape from the store. can you confirm that? >> right now we are not able to go into that specific information. >> is that correct though? >> can you talk about the returning of fire (inaudible)? >> there was no exchange of gunfire. >> the shooter (inaudible)? >> there was none. but it wasn't the press conference. this was a townhall, informal meeting out doors. >> did the mall or store have an

gabrielle (inaudible). >> no, i say it was a very informal thing that was just started. and he ran into the crowd. and when he got to her, he started shooting. wound up shooting 19 people. >> (inaudible). >> i am not at liberty to talk about evidence at the moment. >> suffheriff, can you talk abo the (inaudible)? >> as i understand it, there was contact with the individual where he made threats. >> to her? >> no. >> (inaudible). >> i am not at liberty to express that. >> (inaudible). >> to kill. >> (inaudible). >> seven minutes long, yes, sir. >> you mentioned there were other rounds. do you know if he was planning to kill himself. >> we think that may have been a possibility.

>> is that (inaudible)? >> i do not know the answer to that. >> how many shots? >> do not know the answer to that. >> so you are looking for (inaudible) and say he's white? >> he's white. >> do you know approximately his age? >> probably in his 50s. >> (inaudible) told not to ask for security around (inaudible). >> it was strictly normal procedure. when gabrielle giffords, and i have been to many events with her. there is never security unless advance intelligence that there may be some problem. which there were many during the election. but she goes to four or six or eight events in a day over the weekend. >> security is her choice? >> well, she can ask for security.

but never have asked and been refused, that i am aware of. >> (inaudible). >> he came by to say hi, he knows her well. >> (inaudible). >> let me repeat, we have two people not identified. and for the sake for the families and people who think they may have friends or relatives that may fit into the category of deceased. it's not appropriate for me to say. >> did you say you could identify? >> we have names of some families notified. and those are available after the conference. >> do we know (inaudible) or people in the audience (inaudible)? >> we have it but not releasing it at the moment, for the reason i said.

>> about the nine-year-old girl, was she with the parents in the audience? was she a relative to mrs. giffords? we don't know why she was there, may have been walking by. >> this has been a chaotic scene, as you can imagine. the people that are injured or killed, and have gone to different hospitals. and we are doing the best we can, and when we get the information that can be released. it will be released. a lot is available now. >> (inaudible). >> i am not at liberty to talk about that. >> (inaudible) public officials? >> i am not at liberty to talk about that. >> (inaudible). >> those are issues that will have to be decided on a case-by-case basis. >> (inaudible) townhall

attack in the congregation (inaudible)? >> we don't know. he's not talking and we have a lot of work to do. >> sheriff, how many people were (inaudible)? >> i think roughly two or three dozen people. >> (inaudible). >> five. >> all the the scene? >> yes. >> (inaudible). >> a nine-year-old girl died. >> five were killed at the scene and one died at the hospital. >> did he have a car? >> we don't know. >> how long before the paramedi paramedics? >> i imagine, they are right around the corner, almost immediately. >> (inaudible). >> don't know. >> were all the people shot in attendance (inaudible)?

>> don't know the answer to that. >> (inaudible) lock-down, talk about that. >> i don't know the answer to that. but captain nano, in charge of the division for the pima county sheriff's department with give you more specifics. >> what is your first name, captain? >> chris. >> nanos. >> n-a-n-o-s captain, i am in charge of the division in the sheriff's department. if i might add, we are joined with the f.b.i. on this case. and the local agencies, and all of them have assisted us.

we appreciate their efforts and they are continuing to assist us. and that includes the fire department and their medical teams too. it's joint. >> the nine-year-old, she died at the hospital? >> yes, sir. >> was she air lifted? >> i don't know how she was transported but passed args away at the hospital. >> (inaudible). >> we don't know that, all deceased have been notified and working on next of kin, and can't identify. >> who was the first person shot today? >> that i don't know that yet. we will look at it. we have interviewed a number of witnesses. we still have to interview a number of victims at the hospital. we haven't had an opportunity to talk to those people yet.

it would be pure speculation. >> why was judge roll? >> i am sorry. >> why was judge roll? >> i don't know those things. >> how about the suspect and his family? >> i believe we are in touch with family members but don't know the specifics. >> (inaudible). >> very close. >> (inaudible) trained. >> i can't get into those specifics. i wish i could. >> (inaudible). >> no sir, i do not. >> his previous contact was police, was he arrested? >> the previous contact with police that we know of, we are still looking at. we don't have a lot of information to those things. >> were there any kind of (inaudible) vandalism that occurred (inaudible)?

>> i am unaware of that incident as well. i would have to say no at this point. >> (inaudible). involved or just the range of shooting that happened to be where it was going on at the time? >> if i were to speculate a guess, i would probably be wrong. i suggest that we let the investigation work through it. ok, we have answered all the questions we will answer for now. we will be available tomorrow morning at the pima county sheriff's department. to provide you with any additional information that we have. microphone now. let me say this, people tend to poo-poo what people do and making a living of doing that. that may be free speech but not without consequences. >> (inaudible) talking about motive, how do you think that is what caused it? >> you don't. >> like the sheriff, i am deeply hurt and disturbed. some of the these people were my friend, congresswoman, i worked with her for years. and the judge i knew well, i worked with him. and this is a painful time for all of us. as the f.b.i. and does the sheriff said, our hearts are bleeding now. for them and the families and for the others injured. this is a terrible tragedy and

in all of my years as a trauma worker, i haven't seen this in a commke ours. but i will tell you because of the bravery, and the men there that stopped this from happening. and the response by the medical system and the law enforcement, more was averted. and something that we train on for a regular basis, and the officers practice that to a regular basis. and look for the worse-case scenarios and challenge themselves like this. and today they came together to surge and meet the needs of the community. people were evacuated quickly and our hospitals did extraordinary work in triaging.

and dr. rhee, a director, did a fantastic job. they were operating like a casualty hospital and dr. rhee has worked in combat. and has seen this before. and i spent time with him and it was a smooth, operating system. and you can be assured that the response was extraordinary, and served the public well. and catastrophe was averted and lives were spared but still in a great deal of pain and suffering because of what happened today. >> (inaudible) congresswoman's condition (inaudible). >> congresswoman is in critical condition. i have spoken to the trauma chief. she's got a severe wound. but he's cautiously optimistic.

but to see how she is after the surgery, and could need more surgery. and complications can occur after this. and she's in our thoughts and prayers and we are hoping the best forever her. and i have taken care of a lot of people like this before. i know how difficult a path is to recovery. >> (inaudible). >> as i said, the surgeons i spoke to are cautiously optimistic. i wasn't the surgeon. i am aware of the surgery and the cti. with guarded optimism, i hope she will survive. but it's a devastating wound. >> (inaudible). >> i won't go into that. as said this is still investigated. and in general she's severely

injured. and you will get to talk to the physicians who cared for her tomorrow. my point is to tell you that your emergency medical system came together and did a great job. and took care of business that was unprecedented in this community. and we are fortunate to have a great trauma team at unc and to the hospitals and transferred them. that's the specifics i can comment on. >> (inaudible). >> again i will not get into the specifics of what she did or didn't do. suffice it to say it was a severe injury. and her physicians took care of her and monitoring her closely. >> need more surgery; right? >> in these cases sometimes more surgery is needed. and that will be determined as they observe her care over the

next days and weeks. >> why would she need more surgery? >> there are a lot of reasons, a lot of complications that can happen. and to discuss conjecture, i hope that nothing happens and she improves from her injury. >> (inaudible). >> that's hard to say, when she wakes up and they will evaluate and so on. >> (inaudible). before the shot (inaudible) and did it go in. >> again, because this is still a case on investigation by the sheriff's department and f.b.i. i won't comment on the wound but suffice to say she has a head wound. again i won't comment on the specifics. the wound we are concerned with is a head wound. >> ok, thank you very much.

>> getting the latest from the pima county sheriff's department. confirming that six people were killed in an event hosted by representative gabrielle giffords in tucson today. sheriff said that it looked like she was the target of the attack. a judge friend, john roll stopped by to say hello, and he was killed along with a nine-year-old girl. saying that of the suspect they are not sure he was working alone. and the sheriff would not release the name of the suspect in custody. he's been identified by other

sources as 22-year-old jared laughner, meanwhile president obama made comments and show those remarks now. >> as many of you are aware. earlier today a number of people were shot in tucson, arizona. including several who were meeting at a supermarket with their congresswoman, gabrielle giffords. we are still assembling all the facts. but we know that representative giffords was one of the victims. she's currently at a hospital in the area, and battling for her life. and we know that at least five people lost their live in this

tragedy. among them were a federal judge, john roll, who has served america's legal system for almost 40 years. and a young girl that was barely nine years old. i have spoken to arizona's governor, jan brewer, and offered the resources of the federal government. a suspect is in custody but we don't know what provoked this unspeakable act. and an investigation is underway, and under my direction we have more going to the area and i have spoke to the leaders of the house. gabby giffords was a friend of mine. she's not only an extraordinary public servant but someone who is warm and caring. she is well liked by her

colleagues. and well liked by her constituents. her husband, mark kelly, is a navy captain and one of america's valuable astronauts. and it's not surprising that gabby was doing what she always does,i does, listening to the hopes and concerns of the neighbors that's what our democracy is about. and this is a tragedy for arizona and a tragedy for our entire country. what americans do at times of tragedy is come together and support each other. so at this time i ask all americans in joining me and michele in keeping all of their victims, including gabby, in our thoughts and prayers. those who are injured, we are rooting for them.

and i know that gabby is as tough as they come. and i am hopeful that she will pull through. obviously our hearts go out to the family members of those who have been slained. we are going to get to the bottom of this. and we are going to get through it. but in the meantime i think all of us need to make sure that we are offering our thoughts and prayers to those concerned. thank you. >> the governor of arizona, jan brewer, also made remarks about the shootings earlier today. >> good afternoon. all of arizona is shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific tragedy that transpired this morning in tucson. i have been in contact

throughout the morning with law enforcement officials as well as mayor walkup and just a short while ago the president of the united states. the president conveyed his heart felt sympathy and to convey that justice is served. i am heart broken. gabby is more than just a colleague, she's a friend. she's always been a noble, public servant and my thoughts and prayers are with the congresswoman and her family, and the staff and their families as well as the other victims of this senseless and cruel violence. i have ordered the flags to be flown at half staff in honor of those who have lost their life today.

an unbelievable tragedy that the people of arizona experienced today. one of this of course in our worse nightmares we could never imagined could have taken place. i must tell you that a lot of information has been provided to all of you. we are in constant contact with some officials. and we will be kept abreast and we will do what it is that is necessary for us to do. but i will say, i ask the people of arizona and of america, to keep the victims and the families in their prayers. and that pray for their recovery. and pray that we never again and that arizona doesn't have to ever experience a tragedy like this ever again.

>> (inaudible) relationship, you called her a friend, can you talk about how far back? >> gabby served in the arizona state senate when i was in the office. and have i grown to love her and respect her. and certainly as campaigning statewide, as she campaigned in the southern part of arizona. i campaigned in the same area. not only in the campaign effort, but certainly going down and speaking to different groups. like the red cross and airport and library causes. gabby always showed up. and we were always in austin appearing together on the same stage. and she was a genuine, nice, kind, hard-working servant for the people of district 8.

always courteous to everyone. she never really played partisan politics. she was serious about what she did. and always concerned with what was good for her district. so you have to admire somethion like that. she's a very gracious elected public servant. >> governor, are you worried about how the state of arizona looks? >> i think it did something that certainly a state would not like to have happen in their state. or tragedies happen. and certainly we know that people should be held accountable and responsible for their actions. and it certainly doesn't show favor on the state of arizona. but we have a lot of good, decent people here. this is one of those horrible

tragedies that we face. and we need to move on and make sure that those kinds of things don't happen. >> governor, will this change how you (inaudible)? >> it's interesting. i have always been sort of a kind of person that was always with the people. i had an incident when i served on the board of supervisors in marana county, when we had a case and a supervisor was shot. and it was one of those things that we have for whatever reason disturbed people in the community that do terrible, violent things. and sometimes those who serve as elected officials are the target. at that time i was concerned, but i wasn't afraid. and security was beefed up.

and security was beefed up down here. i believe that government should be open and people should be free access the facilities. i think it's important that i assume in the circumstances we have seen today that the security in some manner will be increased. >> the president (inaudible) what did you tell him? >> the same thing. it was very gracious. it was totally nonpartisan. not political. he wanted to assure me that the president of the united states, what they could do, they would send their resources. they would be there for what was needed. they would be working with my team. i made sure that the numbers were conveyed to their staff. and we would be posted. he indicated that the f.b.i. would be doing the investigation. and we would be in touch. i told to him, i tried to tell

them and explain to him what a horrible tragedy and a sad day not only for arizona but america. >> have you spoke to family and staff? >> i have not, i spoke with mayor walkup that i believe has spoken with congresswoman giffords' father. and he assured me that he would keep me posted and i spoke to the speaker. but i have not. >> governor, will this have (inaudible) on monday. >> at this point in time we have discussed that. we had just begun the first 10-15 minutes for the activity tomorrow, when we got news that

this awful thing had happened. and shut it down. and speaking with the speaker i think that this afternoon and early tomorrow morning we will decide what direction we will be going. >> did you work with mrs. giffords on any specific legislation? >> i think i have. i can't think of it right now in regards to it. but i remember being on the floor with gabby, talking about legislation. and just when i became a secretary of state. so it would be something i would have to go back to in my records. >> thank you, governor. >> (inaudible) you were rehearsing? >> no, working on (inaudible). >> speaking about monday (inaudible) tomorrow?
