they are undocumented workers out there. they are taking care of our children and elderly in nursing homes. they are being victims of deportation. families have been divided. some of these families have actually put up their children for adoption when they have been deported. that is outrageous. the one question people never ask is why the people come here why do people come to the united states? why did they leave their beautiful homes in guatemala and places we go as tourists? because there are no opportunities. we are responsible for the lack of opportunities. we have free trade agreements allow us to ship subsidized corn from the midwest to mexico.
6:16 pm
we displace millions of farm workers. they cannot compete with agribusiness here. millions of them are being displaced and are out of work. what are they going to do? they are not going to starve. they're going to come to the united states of america. then we have the big box stores like wal-mart. they go into latin america. they displace thousands of shopkeepers. they have nowhere to go. they have to come to the united states. we have the big factories. we take out the profits and natural resources. the people are left behind as low wage earners. [alarn] >> i think that is the fire alarm again. but that is a test of the fire alarm system. >> we have a fire alarm going on in the congress right now.
6:17 pm
[laughter] >> in world war ii, after repeated -- defeated japan and germany, we sent them millions of dollars to rebuild their economy. we have sony and honda and toyota. they were all built with american dollars. is the same thing with germany. the difference is the american companies did not going to japan and germany and takeover the economy. we let them build their own economies. it is different with latin america. american companies go in and take over the economy's. the free-trade agreements, we need to call our congresspersons and tell them not to sign the agreements. we know they are bad for the working people over there, the labor unions. it is not just mexico and central america. this is what other countries do not like us much. we do not use our technology to
6:18 pm
help them. we just want to take over their economies. this is wrong. part of the free trade agreements is that we send american jobs overseas, as we know. in addition to attacking immigrants with the conservatives have done in this country, now they are going after teachers. we saw what is going on in wisconsin. they're going after the pension plans of public servants. when you are of the table and negotiating for your workers and negotiate a medical or pension plan, the workers are giving up wages. that money they're giving up for future security is part of their wages. they're putting it up for when they retire. when they go after the pension plan, you are taking away the wages they have earned. these are things we have to be aware of.
6:19 pm
labor unions are an organization of workers to defend themselves on the worksite and in the community. this is what an organization of workers is. when we go after labor unions, we're getting rid of the middle class in our country. labor unions are the ones that create the middle class and our society. we have to have labor unions if we are going to have a democracy. if we do not have the middle class, we do not have a democracy. the greedy can stay in power. they're going after labor unions because they feel that they will get people out to vote and will elect people who are for working people and not for the corporate powerful. this is the situation we are in now. it is a very dangerous situation. they are going after education. if we do not have an educated citizenry, then the greedy and

powerful can stay in power. going after the public school system, our teachers -- this is a menace in our society. we are in a big crisis right now. we have to understand we are the only ones who will be able to solve the crisis. we have to get out there and recommit ourselves. we have to understand. we have to go to the source of information we need. we need to listen to rachel madoff. [laughter] even colbert and jon stewart to get these sources of information. i do not know how many of you subscribe to "ms."magazine. it is an important source of information for women. it was started by gloria steinem. it is now owned by the feminist
6:21 pm
majority. you can get it on the web. subscribe. you see who is on the cover of this. nancy pelosi. "ms." magazine is the only magazine to put nancy pelosi on the cover even though she is the first woman speaker in the united states. this shows the discrimination against women is so deep that they would not put her on the cover, but "ms." did. we have a feminist majority table out there. you can fill out the subscription perio. i love the theme of the summit, eliminating racism. we have to work on it. we have to eliminate racism, sexism, and homophobia. [applause]
6:22 pm
it is not right to discriminate against people because they have a different sexual orientation. i want to ask all of you in joining me in what i am going to talk about. i am going to ask a question of the audience. what is the scientific name of our human race? , sapiens -- homosapien. we only have one human race. we have a lot of different cultures and nationalities, but we only have one human race. where did our human race began? africa. sometimes we forget that. our human race began in africa. the human race went across the

planet. they went to asia. people got lighter in skin. they came down the bering strait to the americas. one tribe went way up north where it really cold and they got really white. [laughter] now they have to go to the tanning salon to get the color back. [applause] [laughter] we have to remember that we are all africans of different shades and colors. we are all one family. we can say to all of the xenophobes, white nationalists, and ku klux klan to get over it. you are all africans. [applause] because we are a family, we have
6:24 pm
to stick together and support each other. we have to come together. the ywca cannot be over here and the feminist majority over there. planned parenthood is under such attack. immigrant rights, environmental organizations -- we have got to come together. this is the only way we will come together and win. this is the only way we can win. we have to bring our movement together. the march for social justice, for women's rights, we all have to march together. all of these great women who fought for women's rights, their shoes were very big. the only way they can be filled as if we're all there together to recommit together. it is not enough to be in our
6:25 pm
organizations. we have to reach out. we have to get out there and vote. you can see when some people do not vote what happens. we have a disaster on the hill. in california, we did really well. we get the first african- american woman elected as the attorney general of the state of california, pamela harris. it was the most progressive slate elected by the latino voters of northern california. it was the janitors, housekeepers, maids, a food- service workers out there going door-to-door. this is what we have to do. it is not enough to vote. we have to go out there and knock on doors to get people out to vote. this is a democracy. this is the only way we can do it. we have got to run for office. we're going to have redistricting.
6:26 pm
there will be open seats. in a big campaign, we were able to get the largest number of women ever elected to the california legislature. the largest number of african- american women, the largest number of latino women. one woman elected during that campaign is now the great secretary of labor, hilda soliz. [applause] in my foundation when we organize of the grass-roots level, we organize in people's homes. we organize like tupperware. these are poor people and immigrant women, but they are able to create miracles when they know they have the power. we have the power. what is the power we have? it is in our persons. by being together, marching together, we are the majority.
6:27 pm
if we do not do anything and do not exert the personal power we have, and nothing is going to change. like all the leaders that came before us, in order to follow them, we have to take their example and killed on mount -- we have to take their example and build on that example. i want to invite you to come to the workshop. listen to the great minds. get the information and knowledge that we need. we have so much work to do. i want to remind is we're one human race. it is a zuma word from south africa that means women are coming together to fight for justice. i want everybody to shout
6:28 pm
wozami at the top of your lungs so everyone can hear us out there, all the bigots. 1,2, 3, -- wozami! i am going to say something in spanish. viva the ywca. for all the great work that you do. we cannot -- we have to make child care a right and not a privilege. viva the ywca! viva! let's do one for the feminist majority. viva the feminist majority! viva nancy pelosi!
6:29 pm
are we up to the task? yes. as the president said, yes, we can. he stole it from me. we're going to say it in spanish. let's all put our hands together. si se puede. muchas gracias. thank you very much. see you in the workshops.
