eagle was closer at hand, and uncertainty -- where evil was closer at hand, and uncertainty was in our future. much has changed for americans. we have known war in recession, passionate debates, and political divide. we can never get back the lives that were lost on that day or the americans, who made the american sacrifice in the war to follow. and yet, today, it is worth remembering what has not changed. our character as a nation has not changed. our faith in god and each other has not changed. our belief in america born of a timeless i deal with men and women governing themselves and

all people are created equal and deserve the same freedoms to determine their own destiny, that belief, protests and trials, has only been strengthened. -- a through tests and trials, has only been strengthened. america has not given in to fear. the rescue workers that rushed to the scene, the fire furthers -- the firefighters that charge of the stairs, the passengers that charged the cockpit, these patriots define the very nature of courage. over the years, we have also seen a more quiet form of terrorism. the latter company that lost some demand and still suits up to save lives every day, the businesses that have been rebuilt from nothing, the burn victims who have bounced back, the families that press on.

last spring, i received a letter from a woman named suzanne swain, who lost relatives in the twin towers. she has been robbed of moments where a father watches a child a graduate or succeed academically. her daughters are in college. the other doing well in high school. it has been 10 years of raising these girls on my own, suzanne wrote. i could not be prouder of their strength and resilience. that spirit typifies our american family. and the hopeful future for those scrolls is the also -- ultimate reviewed to the hateful killers that the lives -- the light of their father.

these past years have shown america's resolve before our way of life. diplomats serve on far off coasts and intelligence professionals work tirelessly without recognition. 2 million americans have gone to war since 9/11. they have demonstrated that those that do us harm cannot hide from the reach of justice anywhere in the world. america's been defended by citizens that choose to surf. young people who signed a straight out of high school. guardsmen and reservists, workers and business people, immigrants and for the generation soldiers. they are men and women who left behind why -- lives of comfort, to serve five tours of duty, and many will not come home. those that do carry dark

memories from distant places and of the legacy of a fallen friends. the sacrifices of these men and women and of our military families reminds us that the wages of war are great. while service to our nation is full of glory, the work itself was never glorious. our troops have been to land unknown to many americans a decade ago, to kandahar and kabul, but our strength does not measure our ability to stay in these places. it comes from our commitment to lead to those lands to free people and sovereign states. our desire to move from a decade of war to a future of peace. these 10 years have shown that we hold fast to our freedoms. we are more vigilant against

those that strength and s, and there are inconveniences that come with our common defense. debates about war and peace, security and civil liberties have often been fears these last 10 years, but it is precisely the rigor of these debates and our ability to resolve them in a way that honors our values and our democracy that is the measure of our strength. meanwhile, our open market still provide innovators a chance to create and succeed. our citizens are free to speak their minds. our souls are enriched in temples, churches, synagogues, and mosques. these past 10 years underscores the bonds between all americans. we have not succumbed to suspicion, nor have we succumbed to mistrust. after 9/11, president bush made

clear what we reaffirm today, the united states will never wage war against islam or any other religion. immigrants come here from all parts of an globe. in the biggest cities and the smallest towns, in schools, workplaces, you still see people of every conceivable race and religion and and the city, all of them pledging allegiance to the flag, all of them reaching for the same american dream. the purpose -- e pluribus unum, out of many we are one. the pentagon as repaired and filled with patriots working for a common purpose. shanksville is a scene of a french ships forged between residents of that town and families that lost a loved ones there.

new york remains the most vibrant of capitals with hearts of industry, fashion, commerce. where the world trade center once stood, a new tower reaches toward the sky. people still work in skyscrapers. our stadiums are still filled with fans. our parts are still filled with children playing ball. our airports have travel and our buses and subways take millions where they need to go. families sit down for family dinner. students prepare for school. this land polls this with the optimism of those set off for distant shores and the courage of those that died for human freedom. decades from now, americans will visit the memorial to those lost on 9/11. they will run their fingers over

places where the names of those we love are carved into the marble and stone. they wonder about a lives they led,. standing before the white headstones in arlington and in peaceful cemeteries and a small town squares and every corner of the country, they will pay respect to those lost in iraq and afghanistan. they will see the names of the fallen on bridges and statues, gardens and schools. they will no that nothing can break the will of a truly united states of america. they will remember that we have overcome slavery and civil war. we have overcome fascism, recession, riots, and communism. and the terrorism. they will be reminded that we are not perfect.

average democracy is durable. that democracy reflects the imperfections of man and also gives us the opportunity to perfect our unity. that is what we honor on days of national commemoration. aspects of the american experience that are enduring and the determination to move forward as one people. more than monuments that will be the legacy of 9/11. the legacy of a firefighters' that walked into fire and the soldiers that signed up to serve. workers raised new towers and the citizens facing down there private fears. most of all, children to realize the dreams of their parents. it will be said that we kept the faith, we were dealt a painful

blow, but we emerged stronger than before. weeping may endure for a night, but and joy comes in the morning. a just god is our god and we honor those that have been lost and rededicate ourselves to the ideals that define a nation and look to the future with hearts full of hope. many of the blessed the memory of those lost. may god + the united states of america. -- bless the united states of america.
