[cheers and applause] so the thank you. thank you for not only rocking but quite seriously performing york -- for putting our faith and trust and my husband, al gore, the winner of the new hampshire primary. during the day today, during the day today, some people thought this might be like the super bowl. they thought we might fall 1 yard short, but let me tell you, let me tell you, this is in the end zone, and it feels great. [cheers and applause] we are going to march all the way down the field from state to state, from coast to coast, all of the way to victory in november, for your party, for the country. we have just begun to fight.

i want to thank my wife tipper, the best campaigner in the world. [cheers and applause] i want to thank my whole family, karenna, kristin, sarah, albert. let me tell you, for months, we were the underdogs here. we were behind in the polls for 14 weeks. we were outspent, but because of you, we were never out work to. [cheers and applause] this was a hard-fought campaign. this was a hard-fought campaign. senator bradley was tough and

made us work for every vote. i know it made a better campaign, a more focused and stronger campaign. i heard from several people. [cheers and applause] i heard from several people to say that while they were on the phone with a volunteer from our campaign, another volunteer was knocking on their door. [cheers and applause] thank you. that is true. now, here is what i think is the most important thing. today in new hampshire, a lot of new people came into the process, and voter participation was way up. the voters listened and responded to our campaign. they listened to our discussion of the issues. a at -- listening very carefully

to what the planets were saying. i had meetings all across the state. as a matter of fact, last night, i had one for three hours and 35 minutes, and i had faith in the people of new hampshire. i have faith in the american people and in the possibilities of our future. we have an opportunity now to take a message that has been so successful this evening all across the state. and this autumn and winter of campaigning, which has been one of the most satisfying experiences of my life, we took our cause all across new hampshire, door to door in the debate and most of all to the open meetings across the state, and for me, that was not something new. as a matter of fact, during the 16 years that i served in the house and senate, i had open meetings all across the state of tennessee, as a young

congressman and then as a senator, and in those years of meetings, and listened, and i learned, and i learned from the people out to focus on issues like nuclear arms control and the environment and education, and in new hampshire, in the heat of the competition, in response to the total immersion and the dialogue of the people of new hampshire, responding to every single question, every single comment. i listened to you. i shared your concerns. i responded to your questions. i talked about your dreams and how we can make this country better for your future, so tonight, tonight, i think you from the bottom of my heart, not only for your votes but also for making this a better campaign and for making me a better

candidate. thinks it's in new hampshire. thank you. [cheers and applause] i want to thank you, i want to thank you for carrying the word to your neighbors and friends. instead of slogans, we offered specific plans. instead of lofty words, we debated substance, and i pledge to you again tonight that i will never make a negative personal attack in this campaign. [cheers and applause] the future, your future. let me tell you, i will keep fighting for working families, and i will keep defending medicare and medicaid and public schools, the future of our country, economic prosperity. i want to fight for you. i want to fight for revolutionary improvements in our public schools. [cheers and applause] i want to fight to protect our

environment, our air, and our water. [cheers and applause] i want to fight to expand health care to all americans step by step, children first. [cheers and applause] . with so much at stake, i want to fight for our fiscal prosperity and keep our economy moving. [cheers and applause] for social security and medicare, i have just begun to fight, and i want to fight for you. [cheers and applause] i believe we have a chance in the rest of this campaign to make the single greatest commitment to education since the gi bill, to balance the budget to pay down the debt, to reduce the burden on the children for clean air and clean water, for civil rights, and for women's rights. we have just begun to fight. [cheers and applause] for inequal day's pay for an equal day's work. [cheers and applause]

for a woman's right to choose which should never be taken away. never weekend. [cheers and applause] we have just begun to fight. now tonight, tonight, we will leave new hampshire, and in the days and weeks ahead, i will crisscross this continent again and again, carrying our cause everywhere in america. [cheers and applause] but i will miss the people of this state, and i want to repeat to you this evening, after the polls have closed, and pledged that i made before the polls opened, and that was if you would trust me with the presidency, i will continue to have open meetings as president, including here in the state of new hampshire. i received a very gracious phone call from governor bush. i think all of the candidates, all of the candidates conducted the campaign in which the people of america and the people of new hampshire can be very proud, because it was -- [cheers and applause] it was conducted with respect and cordiality, and i hope all future campaigns will be conducted on that level, including the rest of this one. i congratulate them and appreciate the chance to participate with them. my friends, last june, i asked the people of new hampshire to make room in this election for the forces of reform. i asked you to help me break the washington iron triangle of big money, lobbyists, and legislation, but for too long, it has put special interests

we can regain the moral leadership of this country it has held from the end of world war one until the time of the iraq invasion by having a foreign policy based on cooperation, not confrontation, and we will. [cheering and applause] we can get rid of the president's pharmaceutical bill and instead have a pharmaceutical bill that helps seniors and some of insurance companies and drug companies and

[cheering and applause] a lot of you have heard me say this and i'm going to say this to america -- the biggest loss we have suffered under george bush is not the 2.9 million jobs have disappeared since he's been president. it's not the loss of our moral leadership in the world where a majority of people in most countries don't respect us anymore. the biggest loss we have suffered in this country since george bush has been president

is the loss of our sense of community. the sense that we're all in this together. when i was 21 years old, it was the end of the civil rights movement and america suffered greatly. martin luther king had been killed. bobby kennedy was dead. a lot of other americans, maybe not so famous, including for the girls and a birmingham church died so that every american would have equal rights under the law. but it was also a time of great hope. medicare passed and seniors would never again have to fear being bankrupt because they became ill. head start past and the first investment for children under the age of five. the civil rights act, the first african-american justice of the american supreme court -- we felt like we were all in this together. if one person was left behind, america was not a strong as it should be or good as it could

be. we are all in it together. the president ran as a uniter, not a divider. wasn't any evidence for that anymore than the was evidence for weapons of mass destruction. [applause] the president used the word quota five or six times to talk about the university of michigan's affirmative action decision. every pollster in america knows it is a race-coated were designed to appeal to people's fears that they may lose their job to a member of a community of color. in other words, the president played the race card and that alone entitles him to a one-way

bus ticket back to crawford texas. [cheering and applause] i am tired of being divided in this country. i'm tired of being divided by race. i'm tired of being divided by gender when the president thinks he knows better than this young woman what kind of reproductive health care she ought to have. [cheering and applause] i'm tired of being divided by income, and tired of being /sexual orientation, and tired of being divided by religion.

when we say we want our country back, what we mean is we want the country all of us were promised when we were 21 years old. the country where we were all in this together, where we could believe and hope again that america would be better place as we grew older. we want the country back. when john f. kennedy talked about passing the torch to a new generation and leaving a country to the new generation better off than the country as we found it. john mccain won that contest with 37% compared to mitt romney's 31%. senator mccain would go on to win the nomination but would lose the campaign to barack obama. mitt romney would wait another four years for his nomination. today he was leading in all major polls. the republicans were not the only party to hold a primary in 2008. the democrats were also there. next we will hear remarks from hillary clinton who won the contest and then barack obama. here is a look at senator clinton's speech.
