there were no tv's. unless you have been able to have your tv or cable, you may be aware there is a campaign going on right now. [laughter] part of the reason the campaign is so intense is because the choice we face in november could not be bigger. it is not just a choice between two political parties. it is a choice between two fundamentally different visions about where to take this country. two fundamentally different paths for america. and the decisions you make, the direction you choose for us to walk in will have an impact on your lives and an impact on your kids in your grandkids and generations to come. some of you are involved in 2008 when we came together -- [cheers and applause]

it was not just democrats. we had independents. we had even some republicans. there you go. the idea was that we needed to restore the basic bargain that made this country great. the basic bargain that created the most prosperous economy that the world has ever known. it is a simple bargain. it says if you work hard, that work should be rewarded. it says that if you put in enough effort and you take seriously your responsibility, you should be able to find a job to pay the bills, afford a home to call your own, count on health care if you get sick -- [cheers and applause] you should be able to retire with some dignity and respect.

-- after a lifetime of labor. most important, you should be able to give your kids the kinds of education and of opportunity that allows them to do better than you ever did. [cheers and applause] that is the american promise. that is the american dream. we knew restoring it would not be easy. that it would take more than one year or one term or even one president because we have gone through a decade and that promise was not being kept. we had seen a decade in which incomes and wages were going down even as the cost of health are and going to college arwere we had seen a decade -- [cheers and applause]

in which jobs were being s hipped overseas and we turned a surplus into a deficit, ran two board on -- ran two wars on a credit card, all culminating in the worst financial crisis since the great depression. middle-class families who are already getting hammered lost their jobs, their savings, some lost their homes. the american dream seemed even further out of reach. so when i ran for office, i told you there are no quick fixes, there are no easy solutions. but i also insisted that if we pull together, we have everything we need to meet our challenge. [cheers and applause] we are still a young nation. we have the greatest diversity in talent and ingenuity. there is a reason why people still want to come here. no matter what the naysayers say and how dark the other side tries to paint the future during -- to paint the situation during election time, there is not another country on earth that would not trade places with the u.s. [cheers and applause] most of all, the american character has not changed. in fact, during this crisis, we saw how people may have gotten knocked down, but they got right back up.
10:12 am
folks -- people in their 50's losing their jobs go back to school, get retrained, and find a new one. small-business people keeping their doors open, even if it means them not taking a salary because they understand that their workers have families that are depending on them. we may have gone through tough times, but we are tougher than tough times. [cheers and applause] and that's -- that is how we say again on the -- how we saved an auto industry on the brink of collapse. half million jobs. half a million in manufacturing. we are not there yet. we still have a long way to go because we have to make sure that here in america, the matter -- no matter what you look like, no matter where you come from, no matter what was your last name is, here in america, you can make it if you try. that is what this campaign is about.

that is why i am running for a second term as president. [cheers and applause] [chanting four more years] now, i have to say this is a choice in this election. we have a particular vision about how to move the country forward. my opponent and his running mate had a different view. they believe the best way forward is to go right back to old top-down economics that got us here in the first place. >> boo! >> their ideas are pretty simple. they're not hard to explain. they think if we get rid of more regulations on big

corporations and big banks, some of which we could not -- we put in place to protect and if we do more tax cuts for the wealthiest americans and somehow prosperity will rain down on all of us. that is their theory. in fact, the centerpiece of my opponent's entire economic plan is a new five trillion dollar tax cut, a lot of it going to the wealthiest americans. his new running mate -- >> boo! >> people for a plan that will -- he put forward a plan that will let governor romney payless than 1% in taxes each year. here's the kicker -- he expects you to pick up the tab. >> boo1 !
10:15 am
>> this is not my analysis. this is the analysis of the independent folks who analyze tax plans for a living. that is what they do. [laughter] their analysis shows that governor romney's tax plan would raise taxes on middle- class families with children by an average of $2,000. >> boo! >> not to reduce the deficit or grow jobs or invest in education, but to give another tax cut to folks like him. >> boo! >> as governor romney and his -- ask governor romney and his running mate, when they are here in new hampshire on monday, asked him if that is fair. ask him how to grow the economy and how it will strengthen the middle class. they have been trying to sell this trickle-down snake oil before. it did not work then. it will not work now. it is not a plan to create jobs. it will not reduce the deficit. it will not move the economy forward. [cheers and applause]

it is the wrong direction for america. [cheers and applause] you know, i think they know it is not a very popular idea. you can tell that because now they're being dishonest about my plans because they cannot sell theirs. i mean, they are trying to throw everything at the wall to see what will stick. the latest thing they have been trying is to talk about medicare. you think they would avoid talking about medicare. given the fact that both of them have proposed to voucher ize the medicare system. i guess they figure the best defense is to try to go on offense. hatnew hampshire, here is w

you need to know. since i have been in office, i have strengthened medicare. [cheers and applause] i have made reforms that have extended the life of the programs that have saved millions of seniors with medicare hundreds of dollars on prescription drugs. [cheers and applause] the only changes to your benefits that i have made on medicare is that medicare now covers new preventive services like cancer screenings and wellness this is for free. -- wellness visits for free. [cheers and applause] governor romney and congressman ryan have a different plan. they want seniors to get a voucher to purchase their own insurance. that could force seniors to pay an extra $6,400 a year for their health care.

[boos] this is not my estimate. remember those guys to analyze this for a living? that is their assessment. that does not strengthen medicare. that undoes the very guarantee of medicare. it is the core of the plan written by congressman ryan and endorsed by governor romney. here's the bottom line -- my plans raise money in medicare by tracking down the fraud and insurance. -- my plan saves money. [cheers and applause] their plan makes seniors pay more so they can get another tax cut. [boos] my plan is our extended the life of medicare by nearly a decade. [cheers and applause] if you are fortunate enough to be in the other 2%, you will still keep your tax cut on the first $250,000 to make. -- you make. that is a pretty good deal. all we're asking is for folks like you who made more than $250,000 per year, we are asking you contribute more above $250,000 a weekend pay down this -- so we can pay down this deficit and invest in things like making college more affordable, making sure our

teachers are not getting laid off, making sure everyone is there to respond to emergencies. making sure our economy booms. keep in mind asking the wealthy to pay more does not eliminate our deficit. we will still have to make sure the government does its part by cutting away all of the spending we do not need. i have are to cut one trillion dollars in spending. we have slated another $1 trillions more. we cannot just reduce our deficit and debt by gutting education and research and development and infrastructure. all we are asking -- go back to the rates we paid under bill clinton. which was a time when we created nearly 23 million new jobs, the biggest budget surplus in history. and a whole bunch of millionaires. [cheers and applause]
10:22 am
i am getting all fired up. [cheers and applause] i want to explain that this is not just good for middle-class families and working families. it is good for everybody because what happens when a police officer or a firefighter or a teacher or construction worker or reception -- what happens when they have more money in their pockets? they spend it on basic necessities. maybe they go out and finally after 10 years by a new car. -- buy a new car. maybe they buy a new computer for their kid going to college. that means business has more customers. that means businesses are making more profit. that means businesses are hiring more workers who have more money to spend, which make businesses do even better. that is how you grow an economy, not from the top down, but from the middle out. or bottom up.
10:23 am
that is the choice. that is why i am running for president for a second term. i grow -- owe a great deal to the people of new hampshire. i appreciate you willing to be here with me today. thank you so much. [applause] it is delightful to have a guy part of my team who has character, integrity, the capacity to take on tough issues, willing to take on tough issues, and not just kick the can down the road. i appreciate a man of courage, integrity, and strength as paul ryan is. i appreciate the fact he has learned how to work with people on the other side of aisle. as you may appreciate, having served as governor of massachusetts, you either did that or perished. my legislature was 87 percent democrat. they were ok. what was ok.
11:03 am
anyone here from massachusetts? -- taht wahat was ok. i always, there is a border security problem here. the to for letting me across the border this morning here yen -- thank you for letting me across the border this morning. and i am planning on going to washington with paul ryan and we will get this country back on fought -- back on track for the american people. from time to time, why are you doing this? why did you get into this? you know the reason. you've heard me say this before. i want to make sure everyone in america that wants a job can get a job here yen i want to make sure that everyone that is thinking about retirement, in retirement knows they have a secure retirement. i want people to know if they
11:04 am
get ill they will be able to be treated. it will have health care that is affordable. i want every mom and dad to know their child will get the best education in the world. these things we have to provide to americans across the country. [applause] and i know what it takes to get those things done. i of had the experience of working in the real world, if you will, the private sector. seeing how enterprises get started and change the lives of people when they are successful,, and sometimes they're not successful and we lose jobs. i understand that. i want to bring the understanding to make sure we create good jobs for every american that wants a job. and so i have a deep desire to make a difference for the people of america, the middle class, of all class is that we love so deeply. this is a great land, and we owe the people are bright and
11:05 am
prosperous future. that is what we will do with every ounce of our energy. that is what we will do for the american people. [applause] i have seen something about what it takes, and one of the fun things about this campaign over the past year and some odd months has been to get to know the people of america and see just how we take and how new hampshire tics as well. i was at the madison lumber yard. jim smith, kenmore, international paper owned the lumber bill and -- lumber mill and decided to close it down. these guys went to the bank and got investors and loans and bought the lumberyard from international paper and they keep it in business and employee a lot of people. and i respect that entrepreneurship, the creator of this of individuals to step in
11:06 am
and make things happen. i was in high point, north carolina a few days ago. her name is melanie mcnamara. she is in the furniture-making business. the chinese have killed one job after another and furniture manufacturing for a lot under reasons. she figured she was going to lose her business and the jobs of the people who work for her unless she could find a way to keep in business. she denied the issue would make furniture of a very specific nature, furniture that goes in the waiting rooms of hospitals. she does that well. the 27 people who work for her are happy to have a job because they figured out how they could compete with the chinese and wind, and we will do that all over the country. i met a guy and southern illinois. liatoad. tota
11:07 am
he graduated second from the bottom. he decided the college was not in his future. so he went to his dad and said, can i borrow some money to start a business? he and his dad work something out. his dad went on how the business and he would own half, and they would serve food. there went out to buy a hamburger rollers and a hood to take up the smoke. by the time he spent it you realize he did not have enough money to buy all that. the conclusion was all they could really do was make sandwiches. they got some tables and went to a friend's garage and made sandwiches and deliver them at work. now jimmy john's has 1500 restaurant and employs 65,000
11:08 am
people. isn't that amazing? [applause] it is just the way america works. it is individuals in their own ways pursuing their own dreams who take their risk in some cases and work harder than ever imagined they would, use all their brain power to come up with idea like hospital furniture or find a way to make the lumberyard work, even though the big company cannot make it work profitably. we will start this restaurant and will grow and go all of the country. this is the way america works. the founders understood that. when they decided what america would look like, they had some extraordinary inspirational thoughts. one was the rights did not come from government, they came from the creator. [applause]
11:09 am
and among our rights were life and liberty. that includes religious liberty. we respect the rights of religion to practices in a free and tolerant way. no. 3, the pursuit of happiness. americans will be free to pursue happiness as they choose. the founders recognized that far more effective and guiding an economy, instead of that we let three people decide what they want to do, each person going off in their own way building enterprises like making hospital or cutting lumber. this would create the most powerful economy in the history
11:10 am
of the world. america's economy is driven by freedom. freedom is what makes america work. [applause] said somethingnt' in paul alluded to it just a moment ago, but he said something extraordinarily revealing about himself about how he thinks about the economy. you can see where he was coming from with what he did. you know with the stimulus dollars, do you know how much he invested in green energy company -- companies? $90 billion. i guess he likes to pick winners and losers. in his case, losers. he thinks in some respects that
11:11 am
he and his people by picking businesses can do a better job than consumers making the choice of what is better for them. it has not worked, and it is the wrong approach. what he said underscored his philosophy. he said if you have a business, someone else built it. he said you were taking out of context, that is not what i meant. go on youtube and look at the context. the context is worse than the quote. if you're successful, you may think it is because you work hard, and they're a lot of people that work hard. i think the where is he going with this? in america we value people who are smart and work hard and take risks and buildings for themselves and for others. [applause]
11:12 am
thiscognize we're in together and help one another, and america is coming to the other out of many in uniting. that creates a stronger nation. nonetheless, we celebrate the success of each individual, and we acknowledge their success. we do not denigrate it from the divide americans based on their level of success. we come together. the other day i thought about a kid that works hard to get on honor roll. to get on honor roll she had to go on a school bus to get to school, but when she makes honor roll, i credit the kids, not the bus driver. [applause] as opposed to having a president
11:13 am
that things that government creates our economy and allows it to grow, i understand it as free people and free people that drive the economy. i am going to do five things that will get this economy jump started again. number one, we will take advantage of the energy resources. coal, gas, even nuclear. number one, energy. we belote energy. low-cost natural gas will bring manufacturing jobs back. by the way, keep our utility bills down here yet i will make sure our schools are second to none. we need the kids to have the schools to succeed. that is number two. no. 3, i want trade that works for america. that means we will open up our markets for goods and crack down on cheaters like china when they play on an unfair basis.
11:14 am
number four, four people in this audience to take a risk to start a business or in best with a friend that has a good idea, or some big corporation overseas that is thinking about building a factory in the united states or maybe somewhere else, for them to put money at risk in america, they have to know we're not on the road to greece, so we will have to do something in tuition -- and do it soon and stop the deficit spending. [applause] [crowd chanting "mitt"]
11:15 am
there is one more. i want a champion small business. i want the small businesses you work in find it easier to hold on to capitol so they can grow -- grow their enterprise. the president wants to raise taxes of on small businesses. i want them lower. we want to designed to encourage small business. i want to tick off the big cloud hanging over a lot of small businesses, and that is to make sure we get obama carry out of the way and replace it with something that will encourage job growth in this country. [laughter] [applause] you know how and cornices. if you know what a difference this will make -four americans. -- you know how or important this is. we need to do these things to help the coming generation. one more thing.
11:16 am
american strength is critical, not just for us in this country, but also for the world. and i was fortunate enough to be in poland a couple of weeks ago and have the chance to meet with the world hero. [applause] i had just met with the prime minister, so i came in and he looked at me and said you must be tired, you just came from overseas. he said sit down, i talk, you listen. [laughter] he spoke for about 15 minutes. he kept on hammering with the same point. we need american leadership. where is the american leadership? look of the challenges in the world and what is happening with the middle east. we need america to lead. but we tell you, if this man was your vice president and i am your president, we will do everything in our power to keep america strong, lead in the
11:17 am
world with strong values, strong homes, strong principles. we will lead with this economy, get the economy growing again so we can make sure we have the military that a second to none in the world. [applause] that is my commitment to you. we are going to get america back. we're going to make sure it remains strong, and my request of you is that you also make a commitment. i would like you to find one person, one person who voted for barack obama who you could convince to vote for paul ryan and andy. you each know someone who voted for barack obama. and i know there are a lot about how they're not quite sure what they're calling to do.
11:18 am
i want you to meet with them, talk with them and help them get good jobs. we will make sure restore strength in our homes and schools and get america's economy so strong we can afford a military that protects liberty for ourselves and preserves piece on the planet, and i bet if you do that, we can make sure we will not just in america, but in new hampshire. make a difference, help this man and i become the next president vice president with your help. with your help we will get america back. thank you. [applause] now it is your turn. now what is your turn. we are going to take some questions. small audience. please. shouted out. i am not sure you need a microphone. >> politicians often talk about
11:19 am
ending the national debt. i am wondering what you can say that will help us know that you will help end of the national debt, not just the deficit. >> as you know, we have about 16 trillion dollars of debt, which is about the size of the total economy. testing on this debt to our kids -- zero by the way, -- passing this on to our kids, that is another 62 trillion on top of that. on everysing these day, the amount of debt and unfunded debt per household. over 500,000 per household. most likely my generation will be gone before the interest and debt is paid off. these are burdens for things we
11:20 am
of purchased during my lifetime that will get paid for by our kids. it is immoral for us to pass these burdens on to coming generations. so what do i do? first, you have to end the deficit and then start accumulating reserves and growing. that is what we did. most states figure out how to do this. they balance their budget. my state had a $3 billion budget gap. we balanced and began building a rainy day fund. that is how you do it. i have three things i would do. dear rid of the deficit, -- get rid of the deficit, and then we will get rid of programs i do not need. i look at every program and say is this so critical it is worth borrowing money from china to pay for it? on that basis we will get rid of programs like obama care and some others. we will take a lot of programs
11:21 am
and send them back to states where they can be run more efficiently and with less fraud and abuse. no. 3, we will skinny down the size of the federal work force that remains to make sure it is more productive. how do you get to a balanced budget and start paying off the debt? there are three mathematical ways you could do that. one issue could raise taxes. -- one is you could raise taxes. i am not going to do that. one democrat said just raise taxes, what they do not understand is that slows down growth. you will never get to the balanced budget by raising taxes. you have to encourage growth. that is why our focus -- policy are focused on bringing down spending and continuing growth.
11:22 am
we want to grow this economy and cut federal spending. you do those things, we get to a balanced budget and get rid of the debt. thank you. [applause] i wanted to hear what he has to say in this topic. he has been working on this for the past 14 years. >> that is the secret, pro- growth economics to get people back to work. that brings in more revenues for economic growth. cut spending, reforming government programs so they are paid for. the problem is we have had decades of politicians from both political parties making lots of empty promises to voters to get reelected. what will happen if we have the debt crisis is those empty promises become broken promises with painful congress -- consequences unless we act.
11:23 am
look at europe. look at where they are at. they are raising taxes, slowing down the economy. young people did not have jobs. we need to prevent and preempt that, and that is what this is designed to do. cut spending, reforming government, prevent us from being here, and then we will be the pork in this storm. america will be the place you want to have your company. this is the engine of economic growth we have before. if we turn it around, then we will get that under control and paid off, and the kids and grandkids will have a debt-free nation just like our parents. they took on challenges, and we of revive the american idea and legacy. [applause] >> governor romney, congressman,
11:24 am
we of not have a budget at the federal level for three years, and the absence of a blueprint for our nation, an absence of report with the constituents and with congress, and that is the problem with our existing president. what are you to going to do when you are in the white house leading the nation to get a budget in place that will give confidence to the financial markets and give confidence to the business community in the world economy that you'd just spoken about. >> good question. thank you. >> we're going to follow the law. [laughter] go figure. we have a budget law. the budget law that governs how
11:25 am
congress taxes and spend your money -- that says not only as april 15 tax date for all americans, it is budgeted for congress, and the congress is supposed to pass the budget every day by april 15, but where kelly works, the senate has chosen to ignore the years. we have not had a budget for three years because the united states and has not passed a budget for three years. ever heard of a guy named harry reid? ok, you have. i rest my case. the point is, it takes leadership. president obama has given us for budget, each and everyone of kick the can and given us that this is over a trillion dollars every time and no solution in sight. the senate has not lead. still living under the obama budget that paved the way for a
11:26 am
bomb scare and everything else. follow the law, we, introduces a budget that solves the problem. more help in the senate and courageous people deserve on the budget committee to help this do this, we will get courageous men and women back in congress. we will fix this mess before it is out of our control. [applause]o thing, and that is as the congressman indicated, there is the role of leadership. i hope of experience that in your homes, as moms and dads lead, the enterprise you may work in the state. there are times when there is strong leadership and able to get things done, and another time where you have not seen the leadership you need. the president the other day was speaking about issues he has not tackled and congress had not
11:27 am
acted on. they said they know where the white house is my office is. it is like you have to be kidding. go meet with them and talk to them. [applause] >> he does not do that. >> cannot point to harry reid and say they cannot get the job done. he is to meet with them and talk to them. remember ronald reagan sitting down with tip o'neill? there were important things and the country at that time. there are important things today. you have to have a president who is willing to sit down with people across the aisle and lead america. this is that kind of time. we cannot go on the way we're going on, or we will end up being greece. we cannot do that. if i am there, i will fight and lead, and we love a budget that will get this to a place where we can pay back debt. [applause] >> thank you, governor.
11:28 am
when my son asked why he wanted the day off, he said i get a chance to see mayor ron neat and paul ryan. he said you mean the guise that wants to raise taxes? what are you going to do to combat the lies that are being told about you. >> it seems the first pick them of the obama campaign is the truth. it has been sad and disappointing. when i became the presumptive nominee, the president called me and congratulated me on becoming the presumptive nominee is that america deserves an honest debate about the future of the country, and i agree. i am waiting to hear that began. all we've heard is one attack after the other. frankly, they're not honest. there may be one in there that is. i keep looking for it.
11:29 am
it has been a disappointment. for instance, let me make this clear. i signed a statement that i will not raise taxes on -- on anybody. this is the president that has proposed raising the tax rate. let me point out, you realize the great majority of enterprises that we all work in, americans work and across this country are taxed as individuals. they pay that rate, not the corporate tax rate. fault -- flowlled through companies. when you raise taxes on small companies from 35% to 45 percent, you will kill jobs. then he put into place obama care tax. 2.3% of revenues, not a profit. so these businesses that are making medical devices and instruments, they have to pay taxes even if they're not
11:30 am
making a profit. he has been raising taxes, proposing raising taxes. let me tell you, i will not raise taxes on the american people. i will not raise taxes on middle income americans. we will make sure americans have the ability to pay their bills. we will get the economy going, and mr. president, stop saying something that is not the truth. thank you. [applause] >> if you add up all of these tax increases that president obama is promising, it does not even pay for a fifth of the proposed deficit spending increases. it taxing, borrowing, and even more spending and more regulating for the secret to economic growth, we would enter a golden age along with greece today. as mitt romney said, do not
11:31 am
forget eight of the 10 businesses in america pay their taxes as individuals. where i come from, overseas -- where i come from means lake superior, the canadiens just lower their tax rate on businesses to 15% last january. president obama is promising the tax rate on successful small businesses will go above 40% next january. when we tax our job creators and america at much higher tax rates and foreign competitors taxpayers, they win, we lose, and we did not create jobs. he might be talking to people based on emotions of fear, speaking to people as if they are stuck in a station or class in life. that is not who we are in america. we believe in prosperity, and we
11:32 am
want people to succeed. we want businesses to grow. they get more people opportunities. communities come together, they do not fall apart. that is the secret to the american idea, and that is what we will claim and achieve when we get in charge and fix this mess -- this mess in washington. [applause] >> mr. president, mr. vice president't -- [applause] >> thank you for your service, sir. >> thank you for being here and good old new hampshire, home of the red sox. and i have a very pressing question to ask. i have heard a lot of good things from you folks, and i agree with you 100%. i have a grandson that is headed to afghanistan in 45 days.
11:33 am
i have not heard much talk here and i happen to beat a mitt romney veteran in new hampshire falling you guys, and i am proud of it, but i want to know what you guys are going to do about afghanistan to get those characters, over there shooting our guys. so when you take over washington, what are you going to do on this mess and afghanistan? >> first, and you know i have said to this -- said this to you before, thank you for it to your service personally. veterans of the armed forces, please raise your hand and be recognized. new hampshire serbs america. thank you. serves hampshire
11:34 am
america. thank you. thank you. [applause] let me say a couple of things in response. one is, when our men and women are in harm's way, i expect the president to address the nation on a regular basis and explain what is happening and why they're there, what the mission and purpose is. other presidents have done this. we've not heard the president do this. this is something you should do time and again so people in america know where we stand. the idea we're here thinking about what is happening at home, i understand that, but we want to recognize their people overseas fighting for us, responding to the call of the commander in chief, and he should report to the parents, communities, and people of america. that is one thing i will do. member to, to send men and women
11:35 am
into harm's way is quite a high hurdle. you did not just do that at the drop of a hat. anytime you see something you do not like, you do not just a we will send in troops. to send american trip -- troops would require a significant stake. you have to understand and communicate what the mission is, what we want to accomplish and what the mission is. then you make sure you provide for them all of the resurfaces -- all of the resources to protect them. finally, communicate to the american people what will it will happen after we go and how we will go. all of these things have to be communicated. i wish we had that from the beginning. when i become commander in chief, i will address the american people about these issues. with regards to a afghanistan, i will do everything in my power to transition as soon as
11:36 am
possible and do so in a way consistent with our mission, which is to keep afghanistan for of being overrun by a new entity that would allow afghanistan to be a launching point for terror again like it was a 9/11. -- like it was on 9/11. thank you, sir. >> sir, when you vote to send men and women to war, it is something you take very seriously and solemnly. when you give it the military a specific mission, and the military tells you, here is what we need to complete the mission, to take a -- to keep our women andstillmsay marines say, if you give them what they asked for. it is very important. i was in helmand province in december, learning and listening to marines that are fighting
11:37 am
there. it is amazing. there is not a true that holds a candle to the american military. [applause] [crwoowd chanting "usa"] the point that mitt was making, is the president, in my opinion, has made decisions that are more political in nature. a drawdown occurring in the middle of a fighting season when we are still giving our military the same commission, we do not want to do something that would put them in jeopardy. we wanthem to fill the mission in the safest way possible. that, to me, mean to make
11:38 am
decisions based on the country, national security, and let the men and women serving in our military do their jobs in the safest possible, and of story. that is what leadership is all about, especially when you are sending men and women into harm's way. [applause] >> thank you. my son is missing the first day of school to be here for you today. i think one of the great disappointments of our current president is the is done such damage to relationships with foreign allies, in particular with israel. i would like to hear both of you address what you will do to rebuild the relationship, and how you define what that relationship should even be.
11:39 am
>> i have been taking all of these first. it's not fair. i will take the next one. >> first off, israel is our strongest ally in the middle east, let's treat them as that they are our strongest ally in the middle east. [applause] when president obama made the 1967 borders the precondition to the beginning of negotiations, it cut -- undercut our ally. in made it harder for the peace process to move forward, and as a result, we have no peace process. it is vitally important that we strengthen our relationship with our allies, that we improve our relationship, which is deteriorating so much, so that our allies in the region are negotiating from a position of strength and not being undercut by the united states of america
11:40 am
when they are trying to arrive at peace. that is critical. [applause] we have both been there and traveled in the region and met with the leadership of israel. we have to recognize that perhaps the greatest threat in the world today is an iran with nuclear weapons capabilities. this is an existential threat to israel, and a threat to our own national security. we need to be firm and our esolve and preventinin preventn from a nuclear capability so we do not have a nuclear arms race in the middle east. [applause] >> i agree. but let me just add a couple of things. when the president of the united he speaks to a she speaks t
11:41 am
career for audiences. one is the american people, which is important to him politically. no. 2, when he speaks, he is speaking to our allies around the world. if they sense in a weakness on the part of the american president and his commitment to our friends, they began looking around to see where they can get support elsewhere to protect their own interest. he is also speaking in a way that is heard by our foes around the world or those that are contrary to some of our interest. if the president speaks in a way that shows weakness, that emboldens them. they take action that furthers their interest and causes the retreat of our interest and the retreat of our friends around the world. finally, he is heard loud and clear by the service men and women. if our president -- if i'm president of the united states, i would never say anything to burn support for the first
11:42 am
group, the american public, that in any way harms our interest with friends and allies, emboldened our enemies or detracts from the commitment of our men and women in uniform. [applause] like paul, i would say you have to treat your friends like friends. if you have a disagreement, like you do now and then in your family, you have that out and your family. negotiating for israel, totally unacceptable. with regards to iran, i gave a speech five years ago now at the conference in tullibee. i laid out seven things that had to be done in order to keep iran from pursuing nuclear folly and has taken forever for any of those things to be done.
11:43 am
we're just getting around to tough sanctions. it should have been done ages ago. by the way, when the president said this past week about israel, i will not even repeat it. the awful, offensive things he said about israel should lead to him being indicted under the genocide convention, people being treated like pariahs they are, his diplomats, and we should also make sure that the united states of america, iran becoming nuclear is unacceptable, and we of options on the table, but not as on the table but in our hands. will not allow them to become a nuclear threat to us or our friends. thank you. [applause] >> my 15-year-old brother started his own company and made the upper stickers for you guys -- the bumpber stickers for you
11:44 am
guys. need's right, we do mitt romney 2012.omn2012vote >> her brother the entrepreneur. what does that say? i would like to thank you both for coming to my wonderful campus, a beautiful campus. as a junior, i am lucky to say i am taking out my first loan but i've been faced with the reality about how much that i will have after graduating year and eventually law school. my question to you is what will you do to help the students of this campus, steak and wonderful country with their debt, and what will you help to help my generation become this country's future? >> absolutely.
11:45 am
i am glad you raised that. there are loans been taken out for you that you do not know about, and i want that also to be on your list, because every time you get a paycheck after you graduate, you will see a line in there, which as many going to the federal government. this will be paying for the debts if you did not know you took on. those come first. they come after you first. it is a huge number. i just told you, of over $500,000 per household. you will pay the interest and principal on that all of your life. the first thing i will do is to make sure we do not keep adding more and more debt you do not even know about. that is number one. number two, the next thing i will do is to make sure when you graduate, you can get a job. [applause] half of the kids coming out of
11:46 am
college this year, half of them cannot find a job or a job that is consistent with a college degree. it is unacceptable. we have to make sure young people coming into the work force can get a job. it used to be the american dream was owning your own home. now it is getting the kids out of the home you own. [laughter] i want to make sure you get home of your own, that you get a good job and pay back the debt. i know it is very tempting as a politician to go out and say i will give you some money. and i will just give you money. that is just taking money from your other pocket and giving it to your other pocket. i will not promise all sorts of three things that i know you will pay for. what i want to do is give you a great job so you will be able to pay back yourself. [applause]
11:47 am
i want to get the government off your back so you can keep more of what you earned. thank you. [applause] >> i will tell you one other thing, when president obama talks about the issues, he makes all these promises. he cut the funding in two years. it is called a budget gimmick. empty promises. we have to look at tuition fl. tuition inflation is much faster than other inflation. when would you -- when we are spending on the right hand, we have to make sure we are not feeling on the left hand. did to make sure your education dollars stretch further than the have in the past, and we need more transparency so the educators -- like the great school of catholic higher education -- i went to catholic school for eight years. a great education. [applause]
11:48 am
we want them to compete for your business as a student based on outcome, equality, and affordability. but competition works everywhere. -- that kind of competition works everywhere. when i grew up, education inflation was not quite what it is today. it is double digit some cases. we need to attack the root cause of education at inflation, combined with economic growth and a debt-free nation. that is how in this generation we maintain the legacy of leaving the next generation better off. [applause] >> this goes against my nature. this goes against my nature are right. [laughter] this better be a good question
11:49 am
for a yankee fan. i have to tell you a story, i was at the citadel in south carolina giving a speech. all of the cadets were lined up. sitting at its attention. i tell a joke or two. they look down the aisle. i cannot allow out of them. finally, i took questions from audiences. most of the people have written about their questions on a card, and no card. they read the question, and i would respond to it. one guy said what do you think about the red sox having traded johnny damon to the yankees? everyone was astounded someone asked the question. it was a great opportunity. i said it proves one thing, we all hate yankees. [laughter]
