really follow politics know that you can get on c-span2 and watch the senate either doing something or looking like a goldfish bowl, but as georgia was in her younger days, we would have late votes. she would have c-span2 on in the kitchen so she could see when the final vote would occur and know when i was coming home, so george's first words were mommy, daddy, and senator web. it is such a pleasure to have them with me today. we are now in the final days of one of the nastiest political campaigns in the country. i sought in the paper nearly $80 million has been spent in

virginia alone in the senate race alone. that boggles the mind. a lot of our money has come in anonymously peer reagan we do not even know who is giving it, and what we are doing now is through -- a lot of our money has come in anonymously. we do not know who is giving it. we all want the american dream. we all want to feel if we had the opportunity we could put things together and make it to the top. as long as there is fairness and a safety net under you, if you if you a disability or need help with your education or
1:02 am
you are reaching your retirement, this is what i call the american trifecta. opportunity at the time and security if you fall on hard times or you need a little help. that is why i want people to do what they can. if you believe in those three things. if you believe in those guarantees, my advice to you is you had better be voting for barack obama. the other side spends a lot of time talking about the opportunity at the top. we want that opportunity at the top. i do not think there are many who understand that many of those who need government assistance today want to live the american dream as much as those who have already made it. they do not think of themselves as a culture of dependency.
1:03 am
it is one day before the election, and we do not know what governor romney wants to do. that ought to make you worried. on the other hand, we have learned a lot about what congressman ryan wants to do, and that ought to make you scared. we keep hearing arguments about democrats, barack obama in particular, but democrats are european-style social was intent on destroying the accumulation of wealth in america. that is hard to figure out. if you look at what has happened since this recession, the stock market has doubled. that does not sound like socialism to me. we are on the way back. our working people are still struggling. the people at the top have continued to separate
1:04 am
themselves from the rest of our society, but the stock market has doubled. do not tell me we are on the way down. we are on the way up. i want everybody who is working people in this country to be carried a long way. that is the difference between our parties. when i decided almost two years ago i would not run for reelection in the senate, one of the first calls i made was to team cain regents -- was to tim cain. i have come to know him. i have come to value his integrity. i have come to listen to his judgment. i have come to believe in his

furs. i learn this when i was the mayor. we knew who the democrats and republicans were. we were bipartisan. as a mayor, we were able to build schools common on -- to build schools, to cut crime, to clean up the river, and we did it by working together. as governor, you get a four-year term. mine was the worst recession since the 1930. we work together. we had to take $5 billion of of the state budget. i am the only governor in modern times that left office with a smaller budget then i started, but we did not cut in a way that shredded the safety net or message the virginia the economy up. we were virginia's has managed

1:12 am
they have made would make it harder to find common ground. they pledged they will protect costly tax breaks for the big five oil companies, even at the expense of investments we could make that would help our students to be successful. they pledged to fight until the better -- until the bitter end for tax breaks for the wealthiest, and they set about reducing welfare services so many vulnerable americans rely on. they cut by rights for women and even to scoff at laws that ensure equal pay for women or family medical leave act. >> boo! >> this is the 21st century, but its big oil companies are what they are fighting for or women's rights are what they are fighting against, this pretty

much says it all. we have a different way of looking at things. the senior who is trying to make ends meet on a fixed income, that is what we are working for. the veteran leaving acts of service or leaving job training to get a good civilian job, that is what we are working for. the family that wants to make sure their child is not cast aside cruelly from health insurance because of pre- existing condition, that is the real world. the small-business owner who cannot get a loan to expand her business and hire new companies, that is who we are working for. the student who wants to go to college and pursue opportunity, that is who we are working for, and the woman who is still earning 79 cents on the dollar to her male counterparts, that is what we are working for. we know when we focus on
1:14 am
tomorrow's opportunities for these folks, instead of rehashing yesterday's battles or embracing yesterday's failed policies, and we strengthen our nation. when we attack common challenges instead of attacking each other, we strengthen our nation, and when we put country and, well ahead of partisan and politics, we strengthen our nation. i see folks who want to work together to make sure with a great president we strengthen our nation that is how president obama has led our nation, and i pledge to you that is how i will leave if you elect me to serve in the united states senate. now it is up to you. i have campaign full time for 19 months, yet it is kind of out of my hands now. it is in the hands of the maker

i need you to vote. i need you to make sure others get their chance to cast their ballot in this swing state of virginia. i have been having some fun, and i have had a couple of tough assignments. in charlottesville i was the last person standing in a great crowd between the crowd and bruce springsteen, and that sounds pretty cool. even dedicates a song to you. i was the last person standing between the crowd and the dave matthews. that was really cool, but today i really have a great job. i am the last person standing between you and our spectacular vice president and his spectacular wife jill, an employee of the virginia community college system. we are so thankful for the

all of us have been there multiple times, and it is remarkable what they do and what they are doing right now. every morning i checked with the pentagon to find out what price has been paid. as of this morning, there are 6509 fallen angels in iraq and afghanistan. when you are in the theater, you refer to any one fallen in theater as a fallen angel. there are 6509 families who have suffered a great deal, and what made me think about it was during my colleagues talk about how we have to bring this country together again. we have had too much division,
5:05 am
and one of the things i found remarkable is none of the 50,118 who have been wounded, none of the 17,000 were critically wounded. none of them ever asked the guy or woman standing next to them if you are a democrat or republican. none of them ever engaged in anything other than the interest of their country. i saw another demonstration of that spirit that gave me hope in this got awful storm we just had, sandy. it really clobbered new jersey. every morning i will be on a call where we speak to the governors of the affected states, and i found it
5:06 am
remarkable the democrats and republicans are all acting together again. they are acting like when we got started in politics. the governor of delaware is a democrat on this call is saying, when asked what do you need, he said, i would like to say to chris christi, delaware has been hit. if you need any generators, you are going to hit more than we have been hit, so we will send them to you. ladies and gentlemen, that is how people are responding in the crisis, and that is what we have to go to again. there is a great story i like to tell. i am the oldest guy up here. i go back a long way.
5:07 am
there used to be a guy in the house of representatives and in and named tip o'neil. he is to have a party at his home. they used him as a poster boy for the democratic party in his last election. his only tough election he had his whole career, and he told the story standing out on the steps of his basement, he said, i lived next door, and i am making a name up. he lived in a duplex in cambridge, and he said, what i did every election night, at 7:30 i would wait for the results to come in.
5:08 am
he said it was cold as usual. he said halfway up the stairs he met his next-door neighbor of 28 years. he said, did you vote for tip this year? she said no. he said, we have been living next door for years. we know each other. he said she looked at him and said, you did not ask me. good i am here to ask virginia please give us your vote. we have incredible opportunities. we are in such a position to be the greatest military in the world.
5:09 am
we have united our allies for the first time in years. we have made real progress. we have created new jobs. companies have hired more workers than any time in the last eight months. exports are up 41%. give 500,000 new manufacturing jobs. 3 million more working class kids in college because of pell grants. get no matter what the other team said, we did rescue the automobile industry. we expanded benefits to medicare. we ended the war in iraq, and we will end the war in afghanistan. we will create new manufacturing jobs.
5:10 am
we will train new workers across america. the jobs that exist, the skills are lacking, and we are going to add 100,000 new math and science teachers. we are going to cut our oil in half. clean coal, natural gas, wind, solar, biofuel, and my wife's students are going to hear it in sourcing more than outsourcing. we are going to give tax breaks to those who come home rather than those who go abroad. and we can continue to go forward, or we can go to the politics of got into this mess in the first place. i cannot think of any election were the differences are more stark. i had a debate with the congressman.
5:11 am
[applause] if you saw the last couple of debates, you begin to wonder. governor romney and congressman ryan seemed to be running away as fast as they can from every day. -- every debate. they are like a kid trying to outrun their shadow. the sun is going down tomorrow night for them. it is going down.
5:12 am
did you see the foreign policy debate with the president? i did not know whether or not romney was going to endorse barack or debate him. he went from sending a responsibility to the afghans because we have trained 350,000 of their military by 2014. he went from saying it was a terrible mistake to the kind of agrees with a timeline. i asked the same question in my debate to my colleagues, but romney says, will you guarantee will be out by 2014? he used his favorite phrase. it depends. it depends on the weather. it depends on the polls. it depends how i feel.
5:13 am
it depends how many times i want to change my position. the only thing i can be sure of, it will change. i have never seen anyone change directions so much. he said this guy has changed positions so many times he is going to become a chief contortionist. as president clinton. i cannot remember when he said it, but it was sometime yesterday. talking about cirque du soleil. it is astounding. i have never seen it before. i tell you what, man. on issues relating to women, on issues related to women, they just could not bring themselves to climb into the 21st century.
5:14 am
they are still stuck somewhere between 1956 and 1963. it is in that range. when it comes to women's rights, barack's and i believe that his daughters and my daughters and granddaughters are entitled to every single opportunity my sons have and every single opportunity my grandson have -- grandsons have. it is that basic. in the final weeks of the campaign, it will not just the foreign policy that they are trying to rewrite or the position on women they are trying to hide. i know my colleagues will agree with this.
5:15 am
by the way, this is not your father's republican party. this is not john warner's republican party. but the way, they are both a decent man. i believe that, but they have such a fundamentally different vision. they have been running on two planks. there is a tax cut they are running on, some that could to those making more than $1 million per year, and that will raise taxes. it is not just the main outfits. raising taxes on middle-class taxpayers by a couple thousand bucks. all of a sudden, you will remember the governor. "it does not cost anything. they are not talking about it anymore. when i asked to name one single solitary exception they cut for the wealthy, they could not name
5:16 am
one. ryan could not name one for me. what are they running away from it, as if it doesn't exist? the second plank of this whole new republican philosophy, it is already passed. they passed it. when it got past, governor romney said it was a marvelous budget. he said he would sign it. that would be the law. "the new york times," "the new york times," when it passed in the house, they called it the most extreme budget passed by a house of congress in modern times, and now, i have a granddaughter that would say, what happened?
5:17 am
did casper the friendly ghost steel and? -- steal it? where did it go? really genuine. think about it. they do not talk about it. they say no, that is not the budget they want. the same budget that they want to privatize social security. they took that out of this budget, but they will go back to it. it eliminates tax credits. it takes kids off of pell grant. ladies and gentlemen, these guys are shameless. they have walked away from the very thing they have been running on an voting on, in the case, in the last 14 years. there is another expression. a leopard cannot change his spots, folks. their policies have not changed. as bill clinton said, their
5:18 am
economic policies are bush on steroids. that is his phrase. look. massive tax cuts for the wealthy. shredding regulations, and letting banks rewrite the rules, letting wall street running wild again. we have seen this before. we know how it ends. in and did in the great recession of 2008. america cannot afford to go back. too much is at stake for the american people. in the final hours of this campaign, they are adding on top. they are doing anything they can to confuse the electorate. i have spent a lot of time, which may not surprise you, in ohio. one of the largest newspapers said governor romney will say whenever no matter how much, quote, no matter how much confusion he must sow to win the election.
5:19 am
they have gone against the automotive bailout to it say they were really for it, and now they are trying to scare the devil out of ohioans. they are running ads. every single thing they lied. they say what is going to happen is president obama, the reason why he did what he did in the bailout is he wanted chrysler to go bankrupt so the italians in could come in and have all of the jobs go to china. we used to be the second largest per-capita state for automotive, because we have such a small work force, relatively speaking, and those people got crushed, crushed, just like the people did out in ohio. and now, at least in ohio, they are coming back. tens of thousands of new jobs, and just as people are getting up off of their back, just as they are singing, "honey, it is going to be ok.
5:20 am
mom and dad are back," they are getting scared again. general motors and chrysler have announced that the advertisements are a lie. when is the last time you saw two major corporations in the last hours of a campaign go after a republican candidate? they continue to do it. they are shameless. the detroit folks -- excuse me, "the denver post" said the best in an editorial. here is what they said. there is a question of character. they went on to say that if they speak in an difference to the concerns of the ohio working class, it is just as revealing
5:21 am
as backing an ad that leave that impression. guys, i will get out of your hair. my mom used to have an expression. i imagine your moms and dads had similar expressions, for real. they said, your character is not determined by what you say when everyone is looking. your character is determined by what you say when no one is looking. [applause] ladies and gentlemen, we know what governor romney said when he thought no one was looking. we know what he said. he said 47% of the people i was raised with in scranton, and a lot of you were raised with, he said 47% of them were, quote, not willing to take responsibility for their own lives. where does he live? and who does he think he is? folks, presidential elections are about character. it is the most important

speeches and the attacks and all of the ads and to look to the record, because talk is cheap, but a record is real, and it is earned by effort. change was promised by the president, but change is not measured by that, it is measured by achievement. four years ago, canada obama -- candidate obama promised much, but he has fallen so very short. he promised a post-partisan presidency, but he became most partisan, blaming and attacking. and it was not just republicans he refused to listen to. he also did not listen to independent voices. he was going to focus on jobs. instead, he focused on obamacare, which killed jobs, and he said he was going to cut the deficit in half.
5:50 am
instead, he doubled it. instead, he said unemployment would be at 5.2%, and he is at 7.9%, and, by the way, if that is the number we should have had, unemployment today is higher than it was when the president was elected. he promised that he would propose a plan that would save social security and medicare. he did not. instead, he raided medicare to pay for obamacare. $16 million. he said he would lower health- insurance premiums for the average family in america by $2,500 per year. anybody here have their premiums go down by 25 $1 per year? no, they are now actually higher by $3,000 per year, and

gasoline, the average american family pays $2,000 more for gasoline than when president obama was elected. he said he would work across party lines, and he has not met on the economy or on the budget or on jobs with either a republican leader of the house or senate since july, so instead of bridging the divide, and he has made it wider. maybe you in new hampshire look at the challenges we face as a nation, not first as a republican or a democrat, but as an american. you have watched what has happened over the last four years with an independent view. you hoped that president obama would live up to his promise to bring america together. he has not. i will. [cheers and applause]
5:52 am
let me tell you what he fell so short of what he promised. that is because he cared more about the political agenda that he did about the economy. did obama create new jobs? did his war on coal and gas and oil create new jobs? did those regulations help banks make more loans? does raising taxes for people to work? did his avalanche of new regulations help small-business? well, you passed the test. [cheers and applause] now, look.

almost every measure he took hurt the economy, and it hurt our fellow americans. 23 million americans are struggling to find a good job. one out of six of us is poorer, and the middle class is being squeezed as take a pay has gone down by $4,300 per year, and the cost of everything from health insurance to food to utilities has gone up. this weekend, i spoke with the wife of a 60-year-old man, and the prime of his life, i might add.
