c-span 3. also on c-span radio and c- span.org. >> in his weekly address, president obama observes the three-month anniversary of the sandy hook elementary school shooting in newtown, connecticut. he speaks of legislation currently being worked on at the senate at attempts to reduce gun violence. then senator mike lee of utah delivers the republican address. he talks about the federal budget and wasteful spending. >> it has been three months since the tragic events in newtown, connecticut. three months since we lost 20 innocent children and six dedicated adult who had so much to give. three months since we as americans began asking ourselves if we are doing enough to protect our communities and keep our children safe. for the families who lost loved ones on that terrible day, nothing begins to ease the pain they are feeling right now.

it come does not come close to healing the wounds that might never heal. the last few months changed us. it asked us to ask difficult questions on what we can and must do to prevent that kind of massacres we have seen in newtown and aurora, as well as everyday tragedies that happen far too often all across america. today there is genuine disagreement about what steps we should take to reduce the epidemic of gun violence in this country. ,ut you, the american people have spoken. you have made it clear that it is time to do something. senators here in washington have listened and have taken big steps forward. two weeks ago, the senate advanced a bill that would make it harder for criminals and people with severe mental illness and getting their hands on a gun. it is an idea that is supported by nine out of 10 americans,

including the majority of gun owners. finally, the seneca steps to reinstate and strengthen a ban on the sale of military style assault weapons -- the senate put in steps to reinstate and strengthen a ban on the sale of military-style assault. these ideas should not be controversial. they are common sense. they are supported by the majority of the american people. i urge the senate and the house to get each of them a vote. we may not be able to prevent every act of violence, but together we have an obligation to try. we have an obligation to do what we can. right now we have a chance to reduce gun violence in america and prevent the worst violence. we have a unique ability to reaffirm our responsible gun

ownership and also do more to keep guns out of the hands of criminals or people with severe mental illness. we have made progress over the last three months, but we're not there yet. in the weeks ahead, i hope members of congress will join me in finishing the job for our communities and for our kids. thank you. >> hi. i'm senator mike lee from utah. the senate finally took up the annual budget. this should not be news, but senate democrats have not passed a budget in four years. to president has failed submit his lot by the first monday in february. he announced that he would not submit a budget until the second week of april. the budget is not just about dollars. it is about common sense. a budget is the only way to end

the nonsense of the washington out-of-control spending. they legislate trillions of dollars of debt on the backs of hard-working americans. the moralflect choices we make as a nation and shape the kind of society we will build for the future. that is why the budget the republicans have proposed put its trust in the american people. we want dollars and decisions in your hands and not in the hands of bureaucrats. we know that if you can keep more of your hard-earned money, you will use it to help your community to save for your child's haulage tuition and to employ in ways that will create jobs and grow the economy. democrats disagree. they think you do not send enough money to washington. their budget increases taxes by $1.5 trillion on top of the hundreds of billions they have already added to your tax bills at the beginning of the year.
6:26 pm
they also have no plans to say the entitlement programs even though the president knows doing is not about the costs an option. doing nothing makes no sense. budgets are about setting priorities. republicans realize we have a moral obligation to spend your hard earned tax dollars wisely. we should but only what we need to cover the functions of government and not a dollar more. that is why we support reforms to fix the programs washington should be funding and a limited programs it shouldn't and balance a budget. federali note that the government wastes hundreds of dollars each year. we need to identify and remove wasteful areas of the budget. instead the president has decided to cut on order

security, first responders, and law enforcement. the director of u.s. immigration and customs recently testified before a house subcommittee that for budgetary reasons, more than 2 2200 illegl immigrants and 10 high-level offenders were released back onto our streets. at the same time, news outlets reported that the transportation security administration signed a new deal to purchase millions of dollars of new uniforms. how is it that we have money for new uniforms, but not enough to keep dangerous criminals behind bars? we could have prevented this kind of nonsense if washington had a budget. rather than having a budget battle between republicans and democrats, we should have a dialogue about american priorities. what are those priorities? 75% of americans support a balanced budget oh stop three

out of five believe we should in a targeted way. americans say the economy and jobs are the most important challenges facing the country today. we have a moral obligation to make that people's priorities our priorities eerie at this budget debate is not about dollars. it is about common sense. republicans recognize that decisions and power in the hands of the people is what has made america the greatest civilization the world has ever known. now is the time to return to that model. working together, we can and must restore the greatness and prosperity of our nation. thank you and may god bless america. >> next week the supreme court hears oral arguments on same-sex marriage cases.
6:29 pm
stay they will discuss the california proposition 8. it would amend the state constitution to recognize marriage as only between a man and a woman. on wednesday, a case on the constitutionality of the federal defense of marriage act, or doma. you can listen to those arguments on tuesday and wednesday evening at 8 p.m. on c-span. >> we could take pictures of the brain with mri scans and see the whole thing. there is an enormous gap in between of how the circus in the brain functions in order to be able to move my hands or look at you and process that information or to lay down in memory. we do not know how that works. with technologies yet to be invented, a lot of this of the technology developed. a lot of this will be nanotechnology. we will be able to record from a be hed
