he also found that a certain type did better than the others. eplus by these as boxes instead of hedgehogs. of hedgehogs.ad what does it mean to behave like one of those cute fox'es that can make something of the data we have today jack o? values youaim the have learned here at the new school. es value diversity and independence. i like a wide rage of information. we arenderstand that small creatures in a large and complex universe. they think in terms of absolutes.es and not

they question authority and are rightly distrustful of people who claim to have all the answers, no what their credentials. aey are not type personalities. they are the artsy creative types. they know success results from a combination of skill, luck him and hard work. they focus on the process within their results come visiting a zen like calm. traitsappens that these are good in mining insights in the array of fiscal data in the world today. it will be just as helpful in many areas in the arts and sciences. most political pundits are hedgehogs, full of brash and bold pronouncements that are wholly disconnected from reality. as for joel stein of time came fromhis critique a flat type of fiscal thinking. in his article, he references studies showing that people in their 20's are a little bit

more narcissistic than people in little or butler. that may be true, but it has to do with age and nothing to do with your generation. the same would've been triggered grandparents and your parents when they were in their 20's. you can find articles like his dating back to 1907 which accused the emerging generation of being lazy, entitled, selfish and shallow. somehow they managed to if the nazis, sentiments the moon, and then everything from the automobile to the ipad and distill great works of art, design design, and philosophy onto the world. [applause] at youbvious by looking and feeling the energy in this room that your generation is about to accomplish just as many great things. we may need you to accomplish more than your fair share, in fact. that spark and energy as you move forward in life. don't lose your independence. don't lose your creativity. don't stop eating weird.
9:03 pm
don't stop being angry. [applause] don't stop questioning authority and stop learning. don't he withdrew previous generation did, do better. take their laziness and turn it into door opportunity. thank you, congratulations, and good luck. [applause] >> eight years ago, apple cofounder steve jobs gave a well-known commencement address at the university of california, berkeley. this year, apple cofounder steve wozniak give the address. he designed apple's first computers in the 1970's. he also dropped out of school at berkeley and then returned more than a decade later and graduated at age 35.
9:04 pm
this is about 15 minutes. >> [applause] well, thank you. and to very much. you have really got it made in life when you can be referred to by one name like sting or something like that. the proudest moment of my life, i get asked all the time. i think that two pictures i have seen and my diploma, it was my graduation day rate here at this campus. said otherwise. my wife and i were both a little bit mathematical. i will not make a profound speech, because the ideas you get in your own head are where the real profound this comes from. my wife and i are mathematical. when we go to a hotel, we judge the room by the room number. this time i was turned to me and said, 409, it is too squared and three squared. we got a good room. i will give you a little homework episode, is there ever
9:05 pm
a full moon on the same day everywhere on earth? thing about that on your own time. [laughter] another thing i get my mind, the tassels on the right right when i graduated from birth, and we graduated and moved it to the left. i assume this must be a standard role of universities. when the internet came along, and lifted up and found found that some did it the opposite way. some had it on all four corners, and that davis, have the people had it on left, and half on the right area i finally figured out it was to keep the tassels out the way of your face when your picture is being taken. very seldom do we pay attention to the fact that life does have rules if you look for them. my wife and i recently went to a basketball game at stanford am a university of colorado versus stanford. was sitting in the colorado seats in thesection. i got recognized, they put me down in the front row of the stanford athletic directors box.
9:06 pm
there we were, wearing colorado colors, written for colorado. [applause] from early on in life, we learned to be loyal to our school. my school, right or wrong, my team, right or wrong. it might just what city i happen to live in. does that make a better person because i am in a city that has a better team? not really. it is a lighthearted, a game, a fun ritual. eventually in life we start saying, my country, right or wrong, rather than asking questions and challenging things that boil down to a lot of violence and death in the world. i was brought up top that there are people who are strong and used their muscles and the power and death were to get somewhere. it is called braun. i wanted to be the other side, the grain side. it was important for the future of a person and for all of us areas that is where i sat.
9:07 pm
i wanted to always be on the brain side. i wanted to attend berkeley because it was a symbol of inellectual thought back those counterculture times when people were talking about it being ok to live life different ways, that life could be different. the intellectuals at the university were challenging a lot of the accepted wisdom ways that we lived our life. a lot of intellectuals at this campus had stood up for human values, they had stood up for -- excuse me, there is a little bit of an echo. they stood up for human rights, wars that were wrong and protested. i remember groups coming down, breaking every window, teargas. we collected rubber bullets when i was here. time to remember. but there were a lot of people standing up for something that was right and for fair treatment as well. intellectuals stand up and say, people should have certain

rights to how they are going to be accused of something. what does it mean, innocent till proven guilty? the burden of proof is on the accuser. we often forget that sort of stuff. we challenged a war, the vietnam war. phrase, make love not war, i took that into my heart and became a pacifist as a result. ripley was the best time of my life. , thes the best friends best experiences, the most exciting time. you're able to get the freedom in your life to explore, to be curious, to learn things. what ever you want to do to set your own directions and make choices. you also might get your first kiss here. time for the formation of your life values. your personality solidifies in those early 20's years. that is what you will be like for life. you can probably look at yourself and your personality, probably will not change much
9:09 pm
from here to there. in my own case, i thought about it intellectually and said, my brain can figure things out with logic. i chose truth, be truthful to people. be kind to others was another one of my philosophies and help those in need. it is hard, because a lot of us forget about it. a lot of us get successful in life, we get money, we get fame, and people become different people than they were. i liked the person i was when i graduated from berkeley. i like to i was when i attended. i decided i wanted to remain that person for life. and what would i have done if big successes like apple had not happened yet that is why i went back and taught elementary school for eight years. i came back to get a college degree. i would've gotten a degree of apple had not happened. ine misbehavior at this age your life is great.
9:10 pm
fun has got to be a part of your productive life always. [applause] you have got to have relief, you've got to joke with your friends,, play a little prank that is harmless. a lot of that misbehavior i spotted in the most creative people in the computer industry that i ever meet. i have those emotional memories of a time that they played a joke on but it or smiled or what made them laugh. that is creative thought. i came up with a formula, h = s- f. happiness is what life is about. it does not matter how money yacht you have, how much money you make, the day you die, if you have been running everything tight, but another person is out on the streets, homeless, smiling, telling jokes and having a fun time, who would you rather be with you die? i decided i would rather be the fun person. happiness equals smiles minas frowns. easy one.
9:11 pm
it led me to formulas in my life to avoid things that would eventually make me frown. try to set yourself up so that things can happen, not the way you would prefer, but it does not necessarily have to make you frown. i modified that formula in later h = fto age equals -- cubed. , fun, and friends. the people that you can roll ideas off to and get in spire to -- inspired. as a set high school and get started laughing. i had to admit there might be a fourth f. [laughter] [applause] here lucky to have a car at berkeley. i would drive groups of us down, so many of us. some would crouch down in the foot of the passenger seat. i
9:12 pm
would drive down most weakens to tijuana, by those firecrackers. the carpets of norton hall to tell a story. i also bought my first guitar for $25. is it was an important part of my life. it is so relaxing to play the guitar every day for 20 years. top dog here in berkeley -- [applause] that inspired me. my computer design so much. top dog, a hotdog was then a different price, but three dollars for a hotdog, you don't have to figure out some pennies for tax. $.50 for a gun to my dollar 50 for a drink. nice simple amounts. learn the have to extra fringe details that an accountant will tell you is in portland. it is so simple and nice for the buyer. i like to put that simplicity into all of my designs. make them so simple that the person does not have to do as much work or think as much. get the details out of the way.
9:13 pm
the purpose of engineering is to build devices that make our home life a lot simpler and give us more fun and save us work and thinking. that was the goal. if we did is long enough, something we would only have to work four days a week. we were totally successful, but now it takes two people working hard, stressful, all-time jobs just to own a home in silicon valley. the wealth did not come up that way to those that were doing the work. the technology, which is more important cap go almost every one of you would say the human. it is interesting, when you are working on products, you have to think very hard. you have to put some which worked into products to make them work in a natural way to humans that they enjoy and love it and feel like this is something they want to use and be a part of. that was really what we were good at at apple. you look at the big companies
9:14 pm
of technology, apple, google, all of that. all started by young people like yourself. , every timeies they come up with any product, you say, this is a better world. we have something better better. when a politician makes a decision, half the people say it is good, happy people say it is bad. we never get a consensus that there is always one super good. very rare. i think the most important people in the world are the ones that run technology companies. [laughter] computers are getting more like humans. the one time i could write with and ithand, and writing understood me. not only did it understand, but when i clicked a button, the knot i had into myself was understood to be a calendar on a certain date and time with a note, pulling one of my daughters out of my contact book. forever, but changed my life.
9:15 pm
i want technology to work my human way. i don't want to think about ways to do things. i just want to get it done. computers are good at doing things, but not at figuring out the way to do them. it takes a lot of effort on the part of manufacturers. now we are speaking to our phones. how far is it from berkeley to boston? i am shocked when it's as your closer to dallas. we'll computers ever be conscious? true friends that know your heart and soul better than you do, your little phone. will that happen? i used to say no. computers, we don't know how the brain is wired. we will never figure out how to make a computer, but the method to solve a problem. they can only follow our methods. im starting to not believe that. i am starting to think we are going to find computer consciousness as we are getting closer and closer. professor, asking a difficult question, and now you ask someone whose name starts go. it is not god.
9:16 pm
he did not design these computers to replace the brain, but it sort of happened. we discover that huge amounts of information of the world and processing ability and sorting it and searching, all of a sudden every place is a lot of stuff we to use brains for. your own keysnd to happiness in your life. keys that work for myself or a friend or not going to necessarily be the ones for you. it is in you. one of the things is, you don't have to win arguments. just when it inside yourself. know that your way of thinking is right and good by your standards and if somebody of things a different way, that is fine. you can still be friends. even if somebody hurts you, you can treat them kindly. if they say that things, you can say nice things back. i think of songs and mesic that influence my life a lot. bob dylan sang, you were right from your side, i was right from mine. in other words, we are a little different. dave mason sang, there ain't no
9:17 pm
good guy, there ain't no bad guy, there is only you and me and we just disagree. that is a good way to have partings. there is a bigotry in this world that is prominent. you have to be like me or you are not good. get that out of your soul. certain platform of computer and some of the else uses another, don't put them down and call them back. appreciate that they have a brain and they made a choice in their choice works for them and is still good. you don't have to say the whole world has to be like me. sometimes we have a metaphor for life called the river. the river you are flowing in. you are not a participant. you are not a proponent. i will think of it more like driving your car. what are some of the rules -- when i got my drivers license and was on the freeway for the cars wanted ton merge, i would let them. i would say, we are all going somewhere and we will all get there and help each other. it is ok to use your brakes and
9:18 pm
your own brain, too. find jiving, you will yourself wanting to wander. some a little and visit faraway places, cities off your normal course. take the side roads in life. and then you might find yourself out in the middle of a form field, you either got there because you were dreaming or because you trusted your gps system. [laughter] intellectual and physical energy is at a peak at this age. with the young age of the people who started google, facebook facebook, apple, back when. they are your age and they come up with ideas that they believe in and work for like rihanna d id. that is what will drive you to success. when you have success, will you become a different person? that and power and wealth are important to you, or are your ideals today be with you forever?
9:19 pm
you can't tell yourself you want to be this person better like forever in life. it now is your time to change the world and think different. go bears, go with peas. [applause] -- with peace. [applause] >> duncan, the ceo of the new york stock exchange in this year's commencement address at colgate university in hamilton, new york. he is the son of an immigrant, colgate alum this and former goldman sachs partner. this is almost 20 minutes. [applause] >> we will look at the videotape later. welcome, everybody. .hat an honor for me to be here
9:20 pm
it is denigrating already. somebody won the powerball jackpot, we don't know who yet. $120.nk murray just we will go to the videotape later and check it out. for breakfast, i had what i now could the breakfast of champions, yogurt. i recommend the raspberry. , i sat where you guys sit today. that is a decade before most of you who are graduating today were born. , myt with my parents classmates, and by golden retriever. some of you will get your orlomas from your parents some relatives today, my golden retriever gave me my to, in 1981. i don't remember much about that day. it may be
