tv Commencement Address CSPAN June 2, 2013 1:30pm-1:46pm EDT
10:30 am
how did it get so late so soon? it is night before this afternoon. december is here before it is june. my goodness, have the time has flown, how did it get so late so soon? does that feel familiar to any one or more likely to everyone? as long as success is defined by money and power, climbing and burnout, we will never have the time to be able to enjoy that other aspect of the third metric -- wonder. i was blessed with a mother who was living in a constant state of wonder, whether she was washing the dishes or feeding seagulls at the beach or reprimanding overworking businessman machine maintained her sense of wonder. delighted at the mysteries of the universe and the everyday

little things. whenever i complain or be upset about something, she would say, darling, change the channel. you are in control of the clicker. don't replay that bad scary movie. one of the gifts of that attitude to life that gave her was the ability to cut through hierarchy. i remember one night i was living in london and dating a tory member of parliament, it must've been one of those decisions made on sleep deprivation -- [laughter] he brought home to dinner the then prime minister ted heath. my mother was in the kitchen, and a plumber had to come in and fix some last-minute problem. my mother asked the plumber what he thought of the prime minister. not much, the plumber said. he has not been good for working people. oh, let me go bring him in so you can tell him directly. and she did not think there was any problem at all about bringing the prime minister into the kitchen and it is where he sat down and heard a mouthful

from the plumber. [laughter] well-being, wonder, and the third w is wisdom. if you look around you, you see leaders in positions of power in politics, in media, and business, all with high iq's, great degrees, making terrible decisions. what is missing is not iq but wisdom. today, it is getting harder and harder to tap into our own wisdom. we are also hyper connected to our devices, our screens, our social media, we are having a hard time disconnecting from the technology and reconnecting with ourselves.
10:33 am
you're very old and wise sophomore ann mcdonnell wrote about her decision to disconnect from all her social media. she will have real social connections in favor of or both superficial technology once will become nearly [indiscernible] if you don't have the head of a digital company to tell to completely disconnect from technology. what i am telling you is to regularly disconnect from tech knowledge he, relative -- regularly unplug and recharge to reconnect with ourselves and our own deepest wisdom. [applause] i am convinced there are two fundamental truths about human beings. the first is that we all have within us a centered place of wisdom, harmony, and strength. this is a truth that all the

world's religions, christianity, islam, judaism, buddhism, hold true in one form or another. the kingdom of god is within. the second truth is that we are all going to spend most of our life not in that place. we keep veering away from that place again and again. in fact, we may spend our lives off course more than on course. at the huffington post we launched an app called gps for the soul. it gives you a personalized guide that helps to course correct. that snake in the garden of eden, hyper connectivity with technology is so widely that we have to be even more widely and use technology in order to disconnect from technology. when we are in place of wisdom, harmony, and strength, life is transformed from struggle to grace.
10:35 am
we are suddenly filled with trust, no matter how many setbacks, challenges, and disappointments we are facing. there is a purpose to life that is often hidden and that often makes sense only when we look back in our life, not as we are experiencing it. basically, when we move to that place of trust and race, we can live our life as one suggested, as if anything is rigged in our favor. we have talked about well-being, wisdom, wonder and the last measure of success -- empathy, compassion, the willingness to

give back. the founding fathers wrote about the pursuit of happiness. if you go back to the original document, as i'm sure you all have done, happiness does not mean the pursuit of more ways to be entertained. it is the happiness that comes from feeling good by doing good. many of you already know that. [applause] smithies have given back in countless ways, near and far, working with chinese schools through the smith china project, spending time in the community with people with disabilities. tutoring children in holyoke and using digital storytelling to start conversations about health issues in springfield. as you leave this beautiful campus to follow your dreams and scale great heights in whatever field you choose, i beg you, don't buy society's definition of success. it is not working for anyone. it is not working for women, it is not working for men, and is
10:37 am
not working for polar bears, not even for the cicadas that are about to emerge and swarm us. it is only working for those who make pharmaceuticals for stress, sleeplessness and high blood pressure. [laughter] [applause] please don't settle for just breaking through glass ceilings in a broken corporate or political system. so many leaders are so disconnected from their wisdom from onere careening self-inflicted crisis to another. top atmuch more than the the corporate flowchart. changed by going to the root of what is wrong and redefining what we value and what we

consider success. there will behat many signs across your path directed for you to make money and climate letter, there will be very few signs reminding you to stay connected to the essence of who you are, to reach , and topause to wonder connect to that place from which everything is possible. my greek compact. archimedes said give me a place to stand, and i can move the world. so find your place to stand. your place of wisdom. , leave the third women's revolution and remake the world in your own image. in your own definition of success. so that all of us, women and men, can live our life with more grace, more joy, more that the, more gratitude, and more love.

so class of 2013, congratulations, onward, upward, and inward. thank you. [applause] >> next, wesley brush, of northrop grumman, is the commencement speaker. this is about 15 minutes. >> thank you, dean. let me start by saying congratulations to the graduating class. you should feel very proud. congratulations.
10:40 am
congratulations to the parents. as a father of twins in college and a son soon to be in college, i can only imagine how this good this must feel for all the parents here today. i want to say congratulations to the faculty. it takes a lot of work to produce a graduating class of extraordinary students. we should all join in saying thank you to the faculty for contributing to your success. [applause] i want to speak with you a little bit today about leadership and values-based decision-making. as graduates of this outstanding business school, it won't be too long before your face to the opportunities of leadership. there are three great strengths. they stand out to me.
10:41 am
first, a genuine passionate commitment to the enterprise. that influences everyone around a leader and helps to focus and create division vision and set the path forward. secondly, genuine confidence including knowledge and expertise. third, a serious focus on ethics and integrity. leaders give weight in the decision-making to priorities that are based on deeply held, personal values. it is these value-based priorities that differentiate one leader from another.
10:42 am
let me start with the fundamentals. the first, passion of commitment. a real passion is essential to lead others effectively. for leadership, it is essential. it is essential you love what you do. you have to let your enthusiasm show. in order to have others follow and to join in with their leadership and lead as well, that enthusiasm has to be felt. for me, that applies around technology to help make our world more secure. for each figure it is different and it depends on your own experiences and the things that make you tick.
10:43 am
great leaders personally identify with. -- leaders must set and maintain an organization's course. that requires real knowledge and expertise. it requires a great investment of time. you need to understand how your enterprise gets things done. it sounds obvious, but i've met many who have simply aspired to leadership, but do not recognize investment is necessary to really know how things work. there is an important benefit to that. when you understand how things get done in your enterprise, it shows those who are doing that work that it matters and that you care. you have to bring real problem solving abilities in order to apply that expertise. you have got a great start. the business school is known for its ability to produce graduates with problem solving abilities.
10:44 am
third, ethics and integrity. something that is fairly obvious. the long-term success of any leader in any enterprise demands a culture of integrity in both relationships that are created by the leaders and also demonstration of performance of the enterprise. leaders in any organization must epitomize complete integrity. think hard about the places that you choose to associate yourself with, both enterprise in which you will work and the other enterprise of which you work overtime. do not associate yourselves with enterprises that lack that core fiber of ethical conduct. it is not worth it.
10:45 am
you can do much better. it is these three fundamentals that are universal. there are others as well. what is it that really sets leaderships apart from another. leaders rely on decision-making on the very important personal input of their value system, things that matter to them. many leaders go so far as to actually develop guideposts. let me share some key guidance. to encourage you to think about
