also director comby's brother peter, and trish, chris. we welcome you. a special welcome to director comby's father, brian. welcome. here today for two purposes. know, as many of you director comby was sworn in in a attorney remony in general holder's office on september 4. and e reviewed the rules regulations and determined that oath was invalid because his was not holding the bible. so officially i've been director. i'll be very brief. before you do the oath of i want to say this is a proud day for jim comby, for patrice, and for his five for president obama, for attorney general holder, and this judge who hired jim as the first law clerk 28 years ago. an even prouder day for the men and women of the fbi and who care about this premier law enforcement agency, fbi ding all of the former directors and former attorney generals, many of whom are here today. ever since our year together, which was great fun, by the way, we both learned our new jobs, i've told jim who's 6'8" as you see, to watch his head. -- jim didn't b need prompting from me.

guy. a modest he's always been serious about his work. but at core, he's never taken too seriously. after that first year, i had high expectations for jim, that exceeded is due in no small part to the open enerous modest kind of person that he is. jim, of course, is a fine hardworking and smart. but he's also a natural leader inspires those around him. his ability to inspire has been vident throughout his remarkable career in law enforcement. s a decorated assistant u.s. attorney in new york and virginia, u.s. attorney for the york, rn district of new deputy attorney general under -- ashcroft and al the bush administration, he has chieved but one thought was pinnacle of the law enforcement career. and now this. experience, all of this past experience that jim has had makes him particularly

to lead the fbi as its director. im understands that justice in this country doesn't just happen because we're a great constitutional democracy. upon the heart work of thousands of men and women for whom the ideals of justice reality every day. to the men and women of the fbi, that jim appreciates the full worth of what you do. your n also be sure that director will steer a straight course. he will insist that thoroughly ns be pursued to wherever they may go. and as a former prosecutor in line against terrorism, he will lead in that struggle. will be independent. in a town in which politics much, perhaps too much, jim will pay it no heed. be no room re will untoward i for influence. as a law clerk 28 years ago, jim

criminals.up you secure the homeland against of terrorism. without a lot of fanfare, seeking the spotlight, you do your jobs, all the while, upholding our most cherished and the rule of law. bravery, integrity -- that's your motto. and today we're here to welcome remarkable new leader for this emarkable institution, one who lives those principles out every single day, mr. jim comby. before i get to jim, i want to predecessors he who are here today. we are grateful for your service. to give a special shout ut to bob mueller who served longer than he was supposed to.

but, you know, he was such an extraordinary leader through some of the most difficult times that we've had in national security and i consider him a grateful for so him being in here today. thank you very much. jim has dedicated his life to defending our loss. to making sure that all justice can trust our system to protect the rights and their well being. e's the grandson of a bean counter. a prosecutor who helped bring down the gambinos. the relentless attorney who to stem the bloody gun violence, rub out white collar

crime, deliver justice to terrorists. justice he has not tackled and it's hard to magine somebody who's not more uniquely qualified to lead the bureau that covers all of it. traditional threats like violent and organized crime to the changing threats like securi and sign cybersecurity. he's got the resume. famously cool a character. the calmest in the room during a crisis. a fellow former him.cutor had to say about the rudyard kipling line -- if you can keep a head when all are theirs, that's jim. story from the time during the prosecution of the

theino crime family, one of defendants was an alleged hitman named lorenzo. trial, jim won an award from the new york city bar association. convened the next morning, everyone was buzzing about it. from the passed down defendant's table to the prosecutor's table. it was handed to jim and id dear jim, congratulations on your award, no one deserves it more than you. professional. sincerely, lorenzo. sincerely, lorenzo. know how sincere he was. we don't know if it's a veiled for leniency or an honest compliment. say that jim to has won the respect of folks spectrum.e including lorenzo. leader for an t organization whose walls are

graced by the words of a director.former the most effective weapon against crime is cooperation. worked with many of the more than 35,000 men and women of the fbi over the course of long and distinguished career. and t's his admiration respect for all of you individually, his recognition of that you do every day, sometimes under difficult rily circumstances, not just the folks out in the field, but also rooms, rking the back doing the hard work. sight. that your tion mission is important is what the call him to answer to serve his country again. the fbi joins forces with our military, and ur homeland security professionals to break up all manner of taking down drug rings to stopping those who prey

on children to breaking up al cells to disrupting activities, thwarting the plots. expanding. keeps the nature of the threats are always changing. nfortunately, the resources allotted to that mission has been reduced by sequestration. i'll keep fighting for those resources because our country asks and expects a lot from you and we should make sure that you have the resources that you need to do the job. especially when many colleagues could put your lives on the line nations. the least you can co-do is make sure you have the resources for operations are not disruptive because of politics in this town. good news is things like judgment, adership, and compassion, those resources least, ntially, at

inexhaustible. it's critical to seek out the best people to serve them. folks who have earned the public trust. judgment.excellent even the most difficult circles. those that possess not just a law, but ledge of the also a moral compass that they and we can always count on. hat's what you have in jim comby. i'll tell you, i interviewed a number of extraordinary candidates for this job. all with sterling credentials. but what gave me confidence that this is the right man for the job, wasn't his degrees, wasn't to resume, it was in talking him and seeing his amazing family, a sense that this is right y who knows what's and what's wrong? and is willing to act on that
