congress willat cooperate with everything that was outlined in the state of the union today. host: go ahead. guest: he was talking about us not depending on foreign oil. he did not ring up -- bring up the implications of issues in regards to drinking -- water issues in regards to drinking. host: thanks for the call. allison says i do not feel any

better about the state of the economy. spanchat. good evening. geter: republicans need to together and get rid of president obama. lookme in at a bad time to what he has done. i feel john boehner and the group of republicans need to get together. isis a good thing that he trained to raise minimum wage. they should work together and stick with everything he has come up with. host: he will travel on a four state tour. here is the republican response. bewhat an honor it is to
10:32 pm
with you after the president prostate of the union. tonight, we honor america. a nation that has witnessed the greatest rise in freedom and opportunity our world has seen. our nation where we are not defined by our limits but i our potential. by our potential. a girl who worked at the mcdonald's drive-through to pay for college can be with you at the united states capitol. the most important moments right now are not happening here. they are not in the oval office or in the house chamber. there in your homes. kissing your kids good night, figuring how to pay the bills, getting ready for tomorrow's doctors visit. we ain't two-year from those you love serving in afghanistan. we are searching for that big job -- or searching for that big job interview. we the people have been the foundation of america since her
10:33 pm
earliest days. people from all walks of life and from all corners of the world. people who come to america challenge is no too great and no dream too big. that is the genius of america. tonight, the president made more promises that sound good. but it will not solve the problems facing americans. we want you to have a better life. the president wants that, too. but we part ways when it comes to how to make that happen. so tonight, i would like to more hopeful republican vision, one that empowers you, not the government. it is one that champions free markets and trusts people to make their own decisions, not a government that decides for you. it helps working families rise above the limits of poverty and protect our most vulnerable. it is one where washington plays by the same rules that you do. it is a vision that is fair and
10:34 pm
offers the promise of a better future for every american. if you would have told me as a little girl that i would one day put my hand on the bible and be sworn in as a -- the two hundredth woman to serve in the house of representatives, i would not have thought it possible. i grew up work emi families urgent -- in my family loss orchard. getting up before dawn with my brother to pick apples. timeom worked as a part- bookkeeper. the tommy to help others and always dream for more. animals at they county fair, my parents used to say, you need to save us money so you can go to college one day. and so i did. hard, and iorked became the first in my family to graduate from college. the chance to go from my washington to this one was unexpected.
10:35 pm
i came to congress to help empower people. not politicians. to grow the working middle class , not the government. and to ensure that everyone in this country can find a job, because a job is so much more than a paycheck. us purpose, dignity, and the foundation to build the future. i was single when i was elected. it was not long before i met brian, a retired navy commander and now we have three beautiful children, one who was born just a weeks ago. have higharents, we hopes and dreams for our children. we also know what it is like to face challenges. we got news no parent expects. was diagnosed with down syndrome. the doctor's told us he could have endless complications,
10:36 pm
heart defects, even early alzheimer's. they told us all the problems sawwe looked at our son, we only possibilities. we saw a gift from god. today, we see a six-year-old boy who dances to bruce bring stain and reads above grade level and who is the best big brother in the world. we see all the things he can do. not those he cannot. cole and his sisters have only made me more determined to see the potential in every human are bornt whether we orh an extra 21st chromosome not a dime to our name. mission as -- our americans is to ensure that we are not bound by where we come from, but empowered by what we can become. that is the gap republicans are
10:37 pm
working to close. it is the gap will face between where you are and where you want to be. the president talks a lot about income inequality. the real gap we face today is one of opportunity inequality. with this administration's policies, that gap has become far too wide. we see this gap growing every single day. we see it in our neighbors who are struggling to find jobs. a husband who is working just our time. a child who dropped out of college because she cannot afford tuition. or parents who are outliving their life savings. last month, more americans stop looking for a job then found one. too many people are falling further and further behind because right now, the --sident's polities are policies are making lives harder.
10:38 pm
to closens have plan the gap, focusing on jobs first without war spending, government bailouts, and red tape. we are working to expand our job,my, one manufacturing nursing degree at a time. we have plans to improve our education and training systems so you have the choice to determine where your kids go to school. college is affordable and skilled training is modernized. it is time to honor our history of legal immigration. we are working on a step-by-step solution to immigration reform by first securing our borders and making sure america will always attract the best, brightest, and hardest working from around the world. and with too many americans living paycheck to paycheck, we have solutions to help you take home more of your pay through roller taxes, cheaper energy costs, and affordable health care.
10:39 pm
not long ago, i got a letter from betty in spokane who had hoped the health care law would save her money but found in instead her premiums were going up nearly $700 a month. we have all talked to too many people who have received cancellation notices they did not expect. or who can no longer see the doctors they always have. no, we should not go back to the way things were. but this law is not working. republicans believe health care choices should be yours, not the governments and that whether you are a boy with down syndrome or a woman with breast cancer, you can find coverage and a doctor who will treat you. we hope the president will join us in a year of real action by empowering people and not by making their lives harder with unprecedented spending, higher taxes, and fewer jobs, as
10:40 pm
republicans we advance these plans every day. we believe in a government that trusts people. and does not limit where you finish because of where you started. that is what we stand for. is every bit as compassionate as it is exceptional. successful, years from now, our children will say that we rebuild the american dream -- rebuilt the american dream. a workforce that can take on the world. kettle you are a girl in falls or boy from brooklyn, our children should be able to say that we closed the gap. dreams big one that for everyone and turns it back on no one. the president said many things tonight but now, ask him to listen to you.
10:41 pm
you.ask him to listen to the true state of the union lies in your heart and in your home. tomorrow, i will watch my son get on the school bus. others will wait in the doctors office or interview for that first job. some of us will celebrate new beginnings. others will face great challenges. all of us will wake up and do what is uniquely american. look forward to the balanced potential that lies ahead. we will give thanks to the brave men and women who have answered america's call to freedom. like sergeant jacob has from spokane who recently gave his life to protect all of ours. tonight, i simply offer a prayer, a prayer for sergeant hess's family and the larger american family. that with the guidance of god,
10:42 pm
we may prove ourselves worthy of his blessings of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. for when we embrace these gifts, we are each doing our part to form a more perfect union. and ourguide you president and may god continue to bless the united states of america. host: the official response, who holds the distinction of being to only member of congress delivers three different occasions. she has three children, she made reference to that and her son has down syndrome. her daughter was born three weeks ago. we want your reaction to the state of the union address.
10:43 pm
you can join us on face book or chat.us a tweet at #cspan the president embraces obamacare. he talked about the health care oneand of course about third of the speech focusing on foreign policy. the vast majority focusing on domestic issues and a reference to the kentucky governor who was seated with the first lady. reporter for "the lexington herald leader." eyemuch was all of this an on the kentucky senate race, which was one of the most closely watched races? >> there are themes that will continue to be a factor here. chief among those has to be women's issues and the

minimum wage. pushed pretty heavily in the early stages of the campaign. you will see the state of the union play out in kentucky for months to come. >>,'twas a policy speech and how much was framing the narrative for 2014? >> at the it was both. democrats are looking for issues to run on. their numbers are not great. they are sort of in the same ballpark. i think that what the president and democrats are hoping a smug these policy proposals will be enough to put democrats over the top and maintain the senate. >> did anything stand out tonight? >> it was nice to see governor steve per share in the audience. the audience. for checking in with

us tonight. >> thank you. joining us from georgia, democrats's line. speech i enjoyed the and the president had the correct -- the country can come partyer, irrespective of , look out for america the same ways that soldier did. he went to war and he fought with everybody and that squad, that platoon, that company. he did not have any more respect for one or the other. we must have one goal in mind. to make this country stronger. thank you. host: thanks for the call. chat. is #cspan fromn is joining us brooklyn, new york. good evening. caller: i felt the speech was a
10:46 pm
nice cap talk. i think at the end of the day, nothing is going to get done because the republicans in congress and senate are typically not willing to work with this president. if he gave them everything they wanted they would still say it was wrong. the point of that congress right now is not to work and governed. it is to oppose and until we can overcome this bump in the road, there is no progress to be made. host: thank you. schultz is joining us on the phone. reference to the auto industry and the head of general motors. what is -- else did you take away from the speech question mark rex president obama did not necessarily take a victory lap and talk about the recovery of the detroit auto industry, but new ceo andon gm's
10:47 pm
the manufacturer in michigan who is turning around the workforce, job training. and i thoughtthat it was manufacturing specific and michigan-specific. in ohio and the second and north carolina. he did make mention of fuel economy standards and his efforts going forward to make those stronger for new tracks. >> based on what he did or did not say about the auto industry, is it your sense that the white house feels that we have pivoted, that we have made the turned the industry is on the rebound and the recovery we have been seeing in the improving number of car sales will continue in the year ahead? >> the auto industry has come around. all the automakers are turning a profit. detroit came off of its auto show that had high attendance, the highest attendance in about
10:48 pm
11 years. i did think it was interesting that he did not make mention of in the sense that general motors is no longer -- the treasury department no longer has any stake in general motors. it was surprising that he did mention that. at the same time, he did have ladiey'sa in the first box. impact would raising the minimum wage have? higher than the federal rate but it is becoming an issue. -- democrat for governor andidate for governor made point. they are bringing the issue to
10:49 pm
the forefront. host: thanks for being with us. appreciate you joining in. at can join us on facebook facebook.com/cspan. your thoughts on the president's priorities in 2014? s joining us on the republican line. what did you here tonight? aller: it is kind of like husband saying he is going to clean out the shed and he is not going to do it, we all know that. i feel like a lot of the stuff he said were a lot of lies like saying we have the troops out of iraq or so. that is -- i have a lot of fatherswho have their out there. i think like raising minimum wage to $10, people are creating the fact that it will raise prices on products and stuff.
10:50 pm
that is not really a good idea. i could see $10 or three dollars more than we have now. that is not going to be good because prices are going to soar and it will get harder to buy things. i do not feel that he is doing anything done this year. i feel it is a lot of hype. it is a new year and new fresh ideas and stuff. i do not the -- see anything promising this year. host: another viewer having the same point of view. the president refused to talk about the problems that are facing the majority of americans. line on our democrats's from tennessee. heard what the president was saying and i support him completely in everything he is doing. i think the memo -- minimum wage raises a fantastic idea. i am just really happy how our

president has performed over his entire tenure. he has a lot put into his lap. came to the first days as president of our country. nativemember of the descendents out of alaska. host: joining us is todd gilman from "the dallas morning news." as we join reporters to get their assessment. thanks for being with us. right now the democrats still have control of the senate. is whetherstion mark they will continue to have control in 2015. in terms of the president's agenda and what he can do and a divided government, what did you here tonight? >> i heard a very cautious president who seemed to understand the clinical constraints he was under. i was listening for things like gun control and immigration.
10:52 pm
he soft handled that stuff. compared to a year ago in the wake of new town one at was all really raw. he was just absolutely for some serious, strong gun-control legislation create this was more like, let's get something done. on immigration, he did not lay out principles, he did not demand conference of reform. he did not say, you got me over a barrel. he did not exactly sound like the guy who was setting the agenda either. he really was more almost leading with republicans in congress to get things done. bybe that is a smart tactic, coming on too strong, he would embolden deposition. i read it as coming from a position of constrained strength, to be charitable. host: i want to share something
10:53 pm
from "the christian science monitor." this graphic puts it in perspective. franklin delano roosevelt having orders. executive harry truman had nearly 1000. richard nixon, 346. gerald ford and his 2.5 years in the white house had 169 executive orders. barack obama and his five years in the white house has had 167. usa point this out with some talk about executive orders, the president does not come close to some of his predecessors including ronald reagan, george herbert walker bush, and bill clinton. >> we may see that change over the next year. i do not see a lot of agislation -- legislative competence in his future. hear from those
10:54 pm
who go after the president on his executive orders as well. >> it is an interesting pinch that the president is in. he cannot get a lot of very important or difficult things through congress in the next year. remainst even in what of his time as president. at the same time he is going to face pushback from the republicans on the executive order. certainly in the spin and the statements that are flooding our inboxes at the moment, the republicans are outraged and pushing back hard against this sort of unilateralism. >> one of the residents fiercest critics is someone that you cover closely. centered ted cruz. -- senator ted cruz. >> he is no fan. i was watching him from the gallery during the speech and he was stoic throughout most of the speech except for the motherhood
10:55 pm
and apple pie things where the president was paying respects to the military, for instance. cruz no doubt that senator is no fan of what he heard tonight. he had been insistent that the president should apologize for obamacare and he continues to insist on repeal and starting over. that is not what we're hearing from the administration and the president. us livegilman joining in washington. we appreciate you being with us. page, this iser from one of our viewers. you can join in on the conversation at #cspanchat. next is james joining us on the democrats's line. caller: i thought the speech was pretty good. it seemed evenhanded and bipartisan.
