[applause] >> good evening. good evening. i am extremely honored to have been included as one of the 10 under 40. i would like to take the americans conservative union for this. each of us has our unique story as to how we became conservative. i'm honored to share mine with you. i did grow up in the political home. i actually became a conservative when i was a college student at the university of illinois. i recognize that college is not the place where most people become conservatives. i was studying political science in american history. i had opportunity to study our nations foundational documents for myself. the constitution. the declaration of independence. the federalist papers. i began to compare our country and our freedom with countries where the government has more centralized power.

it quickly became apparent to me that those countries were left prosperous. civil liberties are not protected. countries like us, the country is more prosperous economically. civil liberties are respected. i began to marvel at the genius of our constitution. i wasn't seeking to find a political philosophy. all of a sudden i realized i had one. i was a conservative. a constitutional conservative. religious groups from speaking in the public square and saying your participation has to be confined to the four walls of the church. our first amendment requires people of all faiths and no faith of all the freely permitted to speak. our democracy and society suffers when those voices are silent. i've also seen firsthand the positive role that faith-based groups can have in society. i see this in the work i have done in prison ministry. i have been involved for two years. i serve on the board of directors of the prison fellowship ministry. [applause] i have seen how transformative it is when people of faith are able to bring a message of hope into our prisons. i remember one experience in particular. i was asked to speak in a women's prison. i was invited to speak in a secure care did -- segregated housing unit.
