were there. when the phone came on and we heard that we were the grand prize winners, we were ecstatic with joy. it was unbelievable. i can't really put it into words, how it felt to hear that we were the grand prize winners. the first thing i did was cry. anna: [indiscernible] host: your first time documentarians, were you surprised or did you know when you send in that what it was very well done? michael: the time that we put into a making a, we knew that maybe we could get something. anna: he was very confident. katie and i, we thought we could go nowhere. michael said, guys, we worked
10:26 am
very hard, there's definitely a possibility. just for next year's entry for the contest, never sell yourself short. you do not know what you are capable of a publishing. host: there are several different stages to being the grand prize winner. what is the recognition by school. we bring the c-span folks down to do a presentation. what was that like? michael: that was pretty interesting. katie: we were in the school's multipurpose room and basically sat down on the stage. host: did the whole school come? katie: yes. everyone was there for the ceremony. it was really advertising us. once we got us, the principles of the zap and she said a little blurb about you to us that was sort of personal, and then we were sat back down. our two social studies teachers gave different speeches about us
10:27 am
and the social studies classroom. then, the c-span people came and presented us with the award. i like to think of that ceremony has le as less of something for us and more of something for all of the people in a classroom that entered the competition. i felt like we were not just recognizing our team's effort but everyone's effort. host: what were you thinking? michael: with that ceremony, inspired -- i believe in spite of the future people, the seventh graders and below who will eventually do the competition if the social studies will still do that. i believe they will. i think inspired them to know that it is definitely possible
10:28 am
when somebody you know who you spent years at our school with accomplished something and you know that somebody from your school did that. i think it gives hope to other people that they can achieve the same goal as well. it is not like some 12 great greater in a high school who had a bunch of money and capabilities to do that, and connections with -- i don't know some crazy thing that we give them a huge opportunity to make an outstanding video. with us, it was just normal people from the school who worked really hard and produce something -- produced something with the same opportunities of people at our school have. host: another part is coming to
10:29 am
washington. we are not just taping this program, what are you doing jack oh? anna: i came a day early because i love washington. obviously, i went to the white house, the lincoln memorial, one of my favorite parts was the arlington national cemetery. the changing of the guards -- you see it on youtube, and then in person. i admired so much. host: what has today been like? you start out with a capital tour? michael: we did. we met at c-span first and went on a tour with someone from c-span, and walked around the capital. that was really awesome. i think i have been there before on some other trips to washington but there is so much you can learn from there. i definitely recommend that if
10:30 am
anybody comes to d.c., they should stop by and do a tour inside the congress building. you really get a sense of american pride when you go in there. it is so established, so beautiful, and you get to see democracy where it is. host: you will finish of the day today by going back to the capitol complex. what is the end of the day like? katie: for the remainder of the day, we will go back to the capital to meet mitch mcconnell, the majority senate leader, which will be amazing. that makes me feel like -- as kentuckians, there are 50 states but we can come together to becoming special and one person. we are ecstatic for that. after that, we will go back to
10:31 am
the hotel and get ready to fly out back to lexington. host: a busy busy 24 hours. what do you plan to say the mitch mcconnell? michael: i think am for supporting us. we actually got a letter from him when we won. that was really personal and interesting. he said he was proud to represent kentuckians like us. i will thank him for that. host: when you and i talked on the phone, it was the announcement date. we recorded a short interview by phone to tell you that you had one. at the time, i asked you if you had any plans on spending the prize money the also comes along with it. it was too early for you to have thought about that. have you decided? first of all, how much will you be getting?
10:32 am
katie: we want each get $1600 because we split the $5,000 between each of us. i have personally thought that i will take maybe $200 to $500 and donate that to a couple of charities in different places. i initially thought that i would give some to "jubilee jobs" for letting us make the interviews. another part i make it to my school or another charity. host: and a little bit for you. katie: the rest of it goes towards my college fund. host: michael? michael: i plan on keeping until i know what to do with it. when you're younger you sometimes don't make the best decisions until you are older. i may do a little bit like what katie is doing and donate to the
10:33 am
school or charity. people are joking, you have $2000 now, why don't you buy this? if i didn't have $2000, i still wouldn't buy it. i would want to keep it for -- i don't know? something special. host: i want to add to all the congratulations you are getting, ours from c-span. you are only in middle school. there are more opportunities for you to enter studentcam. we hope you will. congratulations to each and all of you for your wonderful effort this year. thank you for sharing your stories with all of the c-span viewers. we appreciate it. the students have obviously been hoping to inspire future strike cap participants, and we hope that young people out there who are watching this will think about entering in the future. we will announce the new theme in september of this year. you can keep checking back to
