tv   Weekly Presidential Address  CSPAN  June 20, 2015 6:20pm-6:31pm EDT

6:20 pm
we need someone in the oval office to understand how things work, the world, who is in it, how bureaucracies work because the government doesn't. how technology works because technology is key. and we need someone who understands what leadership is. it is a leaders job to challenge the status quo, it isn't about power, title living in the white house, the highest calling of leadership who will unlock -- is unlocking the potential of our nation. [applause] people of sincere faith make
6:21 pm
better leaders because faith gives us capability, we know that everyone of us can be redeemed, it gives us optimism we know that things get better, every problem is self-inflicted every wound can be healed. we need leadership and citizenship. i think every day, as i know you do people feel we are losing something. every day when i talk to people i think of lady liberty. picture her, she stands called and strong. -- tall and strong.
6:22 pm
she faces outward into the world, that is the way we always must face. she holds her torch high, a beacon of hope in a troubled world. she has a sword in one hand because she is a warrior with values and principles that have made this nation great. in her other hand, a scale, saying that all of us are equal in the eyes of god, the government, the law. [applause] she wears a blindfold, and with that she says, in this great nation, in this 21st century, it must be true, it can be true, it does not matter what you look like, who you are, it doesn't
6:23 pm
matter your circumstance or where you started, you are in this nation, every americans life is full of possibility with liberty and justice for all. thank you so very much. [applause] [applause] >> he was sitting in the front, almost looking directly at sumner. sumner is not looking at him, he is bowed.
6:24 pm
mr. brooks gets up and walks down the center aisle with his cane. sumner is oblivious to what is happening. brooks list they cannot -- lifts his cane up and says, i have read your speech and it is liable -- libel. and then he strikes him on top of the head. his head explodes with blood almost instantly. >> stephen puleo on the caning of sumner by mr. brooks. that will be on cue -- q&a.
6:25 pm
>> the president will give his weekly address. president obama: as president i spend much of my time thinking about how we can grow the economy and pathways of opportunity for americans. we have made progress. more than 12 million new jobs in the past few years. more jobs creating clean energy, markets graduating, then before. but in a changing economy, we have more work to do. other things we can do, for example, rewriting global trade to benefit american workers and american businesses. we should write those rules before china does. that is why i am working with congress to pass trade
6:26 pm
agreements with standards that are higher and protections that are tougher. i believe it is the right thing to do for workers and families or i wouldn't be doing it. we want to have the competitive edge. now, several members of congress disagree. it is still tied up. eventually, i'm optimistic we will get this through. america does not stand still issue after issue, we have partnered with mayors and others across the country to advance priorities for those families who are in favor of doing this right now. for the past couple of years 17 states and cities have raised the minimum wage for workers.
6:27 pm
and they have given paid sick days. other states have increased -- or signed up for tech initiatives. we trade deals with help create new jobs. these have added up to a big difference for working families. that is what matters to me the most. it should matter to you. on friday, talks about these initiatives occurred between mayors. check it out at whitehouse.gov. representative zinke: good morning, i am the first navy seal who served in the house of representatives.
6:28 pm
i was a seal for 23 mayors -- 20 years. my dad was a navy diver. i take the common defense seriously and personally, so imagine how i felt when harry reid recently said that -- troops was a waste of time. he was talking about providing food, body armor, and ammunition to troops. the plan also would give pay raises to troops. as the president threatened to veto the bill, senator reid thought it was a waste of time. but you are wondering, why would the president veto this bill? it had nothing to do with national security. the president and his party wanted more money for government agencies and in order to get it they wanted to hold this plan hostage. the only democrat -- they were
6:29 pm
blocking the pay raise for troops and they intended to shut down the federal government. taking care of troops should be a top priority, but it is not on the democrat to do list. to think that president obama still has no strategy for isis yet it is part of the strategy to get more money for the irs, i think they don't know the consequences are sacrifices it takes. we need to make sure troops have the right equipment. the right training. when we send them to war, make sure we bring them home safely. we need to make sure these men and women are safe in the battlefield, that is the least we can do.
6:30 pm
nothing can compare to the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. the government has lost sight of this. they are try to win more money for washington bureaucracy, the democrats, how can they explain that at a fourth of july parade. mr. president, i feel to you to stop this game that your party is playing with national security. it is dangerous and wrong. do the right thing, get troops the resources they need and pay they deserve. god bless america and the men and women who defend it. >> ruth bader ginsburg talks about her life and career. she often talks about gender equality and we'll talk about her life on c-span at 8:00 p.m. >>
