3:20 pm
let's get your response to what bernie sanders talked about today. jeff on the lot for republicans, you are first up. caller: i just wanted to say donald trump is going to be the one to get us out of this mess. as far as bernie sanders goes, i know he is not taken the kool-aid but is he smoking a crack pipe? i don't understand where they pull up this race issue all the time. even the black people are tired of it. that's all i wanted to say. springs, orado colorado. eileen is on the phone. caller: i am an independent and i have voted both ways. if i was going for a democrat it would not be hillary clinton, so i am very interested in listening to mr. sanders. i would like to ask one question that is never answered, he talks
3:21 pm
about social security versus republicans. however obamacare has put up so of thellions of dollars money i personally worked to put in. he talks about wanting to keep it. then why did he vote to have the money taken out? if i vote for a republican i'm looking for different things and different people. i am totally undecided but i can tell you i am not going to go clinton. if he can answer that i would sure be willing to listen. host: john on miami -- john in miami. caller: he's a man of substance. i hear these things about the republicans talking about how is he going to raise the money for these issues? the republicans aren't even talking about these issues. he's the man talking about the important issues. the most important three issues
3:22 pm
have, global issues we global warming, the other most important issue to me is education, and the third is the economy. at least he is talking about these issues. he is a man of substance. you can hear he is very sincere about these things. come up withng to the money? that is another issue, how are the republicans going to come up with the money? they are not even talking about the issues, they are talking about each other. caller: larry joins us from honolulu. caller: bernie looks like he's gaining a few pounds. he is santa claus. i don't understand. santatough to defeat claus, but he uses every cliche in the book out there.
3:23 pm
he wants to expand social security, he wants to expand medicare to everybody, he wants to give free tuition to everybody, he wants to give student loans. broke.going we have $18 trillion in debt. we can't pay $18 trillion. and he wants to do this? he wants to put us over the cliff faster than we are already heading. the saddest part of it all is these huge crowds, santa claus will always draw huge crowds. host: jim joins us on the line for independents. caller: i would like to say one inng, the democratic party -- we wouldn't have all of this going on today, especially this $5 trillion iraq war.
3:24 pm
bill clinton was a tremendous candidate. i am on the side of all of them. i think bernie is talking pretty good and i liked what he has been saying. [indiscernible] we would not be having on these problems we have in the world today. host: democratic caller is next, zach is on the line. i'm sorry, it's claude. go ahead. caller: i just have a few the process that we are in today concerning the election. when you look at the different candidates from trump and on the other 16 or 17 republicans, they act like they were speaking from the past. if you look at what president obama has done -- and believe
3:25 pm
me, bernie sanders looks great to me. if you look at what president obama has done and when you listen to all the republicans, he is giving everything away. wars, majork at two legislation concerning the affordable care act, in addition to so many other things that have benefited this country and , i would put president obama's record against any president that has come before him. i can tell you for a fact there -- there havefew been very few presidents that had the accomplishments of obama. trump will tell you this and constantlyat and is talking about how every other candidate is stupid and him.
3:26 pm
3:27 pm
now we go to zach on the line for republicans. caller: [indiscernible] both bernie sanders and donald -- p bringing in voters and bernie is bringing in a young crowd and a lot of first-time voters. donald trump is bringing in and a lot of republicans who are first-time voters as well. i think this is maybe speaking toward -- host: and republican caller, you are next. caller: i just listen to the bernie sanders speech. he is a socialist. he believes the government should control our society, our industry. i believe we need a smaller government.
3:28 pm
make, we need to keep our own money. by doing that it will stimulate the economy. this is supposed to be a government of the people, not of the government. socialism is the wrong way to go. we are a capitalistic society and we should stay that way. we should not be socialist and give our money to the government. how much does he want from the rich? he want 50%? does he want 70%? these businesses give us jobs. that's what keeps our economy going. i just don't believe in his ideology. obamacare is socialism.
3:29 pm
host: bernie sanders appearing today at the des moines register giving, the register candidates the opportunity to give a speech and two q and a with members of the public. bernie sanders took most of that 20 minutes to not do any q and a with the audience. we would like to get your chance to react. caleb in massachusetts on the phone, on the line for independents. what did you think of senator sanders today? caller: the reason i'm impressed with senator sanders is he is the only candidate speaking about canton -- about financial reform. i agree with it, but i also agree it is more fundamentally
3:30 pm
apolitical school. we must demand that all legal persons set appropriations. think bernie sanders passion of campaign-finance reform is a passion we only need to share in order to take back power from all the people currently running this country. host: we go next to a malia. -- to amelia.n caller: what that other color caller was talking about, 30% of young white americans are out of a job. young latino americans are unemployed.
3:31 pm
of african americans are unemployed. jobs,he is talking about i don't know where she is getting her job specifics from. taxie sanders does want to that 1%, because that 1% is holding billions of dollars. and those dollars are going into creating jobs. we need infrastructure, we need these jobs to come back to america. why is no disco going to -- why mexico?co going to my dad lost his job because it went out of the country. signed thatinton free trade agreement a lot of people lost their jobs in the 90's who are in their 50's and 60's, including my father and my aunt.
3:32 pm
bernie sanders is going to bring these jobs back. i don't think people understand how much money these 1% are hiding and need to be taxed for the 99% to have a decent wage, a decent living, decent medical care. it is ridiculous. when you are an american and dirt poor it is inadequate. tweets reacting to bernie sanders remarks of the iowa state there, bernie continues to talk about the issues, something no republican has as of yet on the campaign trail. bernie looking good and making some great points on climate and racial issues as well as economic justice.
3:33 pm
bernie sanders, our last chance at an america we knew growing up. a few more of your calls and reaction to burning -- to bernie sanders. cindy in north carolina, republican caller area go ahead. caller: my point is he is a socialist and he does love to promote the government and promote welfare programs. he was talking about social security, but social security -- we should not get rid of social security. those people worked hard for their money and they were progress -- they were promised social security.
3:34 pm
my feeling is he does not understand how upset this makes the elderly people. president, he used prejudice and preparation for the failure of our country. he never listened to a constitution, never listened to the people. he does not care or understand. concerned, none of the people of understand all the issues. trump seems to be the most he seems to be a businessman and make good decisions. i feel like any circle he would be an, his levelheaded could
3:35 pm
help make a decision once everything is laid on the table. my heart goes out for this country, because it is in an emergency state. we don't get our act together we are going to have some upset people in the world. we are not even thinking about the future of the basics. few -- of money, we lack we lack food. get their act together and get farmers back, get people working, people aren't even going to have any money to eat. joy -- mary joins us next. go ahead. caller: i have never been so excited about it presidential candidates like donald trump.
3:36 pm
i think he will turn this whole country around and i don't think we have to be dealing with iraq, whatever, because he will hand-delivered all. he's not afraid to speak his the things he says are things we are thinking ourselves. he has the initiative. he is just great. are concerned about our people in this country, we should give donald trump the vote, because he will not take any garbage from anybody. obama, i feel like he does not like america. to give us israel for iran is completely stupid. kerry and joehn same are also in the category as obama is.
3:37 pm
host: your thoughts about senator bernie sanders and his remarks today. -- caller: i tried to think of a good way to say it. it's like santa claus, he will give us everything we want. -- if youderstand raise the minimum wage to this living wage and it is $15 per hour, then everything is going to go up or you and the price of everything is just going to go up. unless you are going to cap how much the people at the top can potentially make -- they are used to their money and they are going to want to keep that the same. go up atre going to everything is going to go up. he wants to put more and more money into education. child.ady spend more per it is a ridiculous amount per
3:38 pm
child. everything is failing as it is. that doesn't make any sense. host: we hope to hear all of today's coverage from the iowa state fair tonight starting at 8 p.m. eastern here on c-span. you can watch it on our website, c-span.org the iowae back at state fair tomorrow sunday at 5 p.m. eastern time for ben carson on the des moines register soapbox. that is followed by 5:30 p.m., the governor of lew york -- of new york george pataki will be there. our live coverage continuing then on c-span. now we are going to re-air some of today's coverage. we'll start with hillary clinton's meet and greet and show you the speeches from the des moines register soapbox. and hisald trump

3:45 pm
hillary clinton: you should have heard him. >> that's my.. -- that's my daughter. >> two years now. >> it was in eastern iowa and then decided i wanted to join the forces with my father. husband had teed good job so she quit hers and joined -- had two good jobs so she quit hers and joined. >> family farms generation after generation. go -- howy years you many years? them over 100 years.
3:46 pm
>> i'm a sixth generation. my two kids are back from college. i have three little grandsons. hillary clinton: six generations, how far back does that go? >> as far back as we can go, it traces to europe. i have a strong love of agriculture. hillary clinton: so great. it is so wonderful having the chance to sit down and talk with you all and have you here. >> that was wonderful over there. thank you for hearing us. when you said that wonderfully signed letter, it was so perfect. you folks put that together.

3:49 pm
i am in iowa native. bob, weood friends with love them. thank you for all you do. hillary clinton: i will continue to support it. and i want to get the research going on. >> she is part of a clinical trial right now. i'm looking at alternatives. she is only three, she is gorgeous. she deserves so much. thank you.

3:56 pm
3:57 pm
two terms in the u.s. senate. the2012 winner of republican iowa caucuses. senator rick santorum. >> i apologize from being a few minutes late. i just came from a rally at the state capital. i was very proud to be the only presidential candidate who not only stood up there and talked about how we have to defund planned parenthood, but talk about the reality of what planned parenthood is doing. i know this because i wrote the law. planned parenthood was described
3:58 pm
by the doctors in this videos at something called a partial-birth abortion. that was done to protect the vital organs so they can harvest the organs for research and other types of nefarious rings. planned parenthood shouldn't be defunded. plan parenthood is breaking the law, federal law, and needs to be prosecuted under federal law. runningsked me why i my , because we need someone in washington dc who can get is done. everyone knows the leadership i have applied on the issue of marriage. a very important piece of legislation. the supreme court said that banning partial-birth --
3:59 pm
partial-birth abortion was unconstitutional. most people when they have a court decision that are against what they believe, they do what most presidential candidates have done. they said it is the law for the land, it is time to move on. it is not the law of the land and the last thing we need to do is move on. we need to stand up and fight. and i did. , he went to the united states supreme court. in that law we laid out and we laid out how the court was wrong.
4:00 pm
government --f when i took my old of office -- pledgedoffice to i to uphold the constitution. has asenator, president obligation to be faithful to the constitution. when the supreme court gets it wrong, it is the responsibility of congress to fix it. i am the only one who has done that. we need leadership another issues. time where what is happening around the world, the threats resmed against america
4:01 pm
, inising against america russia and south america, this president has deliberately empowered the enemy through his actions. he has empowered russia by not holding up to our treaties. he has empowered syria, iran, isis, china. every step of the way, he has been very harsh to her life. we need -- our allies. we need a leader that will stand with the principles of our country. that will stand with our allies to make sure our interests are defended. there is no one in this race that has the record i do on national security. about three months ago, isis published a magazine. i took notice.
4:02 pm
three months ago, my picture was in their magazine. it was under the headline "in the words of our enemy" and it was my picture underneath that next to a quote where it laid out who they are and i laid out why and how they can be defeated. enemyut me on the isis list. there is no one else in this race who has been on that list and unfortunately. why am i on that list? time and treasure to understand the nature of our enemy. the sanctions that brought iran to the bargaining table that -- i was the author of those sanctions.
4:03 pm
we want and those sanctions were put in place -- won and those sections were put in place. whoeed a leader who can do will stand up to isis, has a plan to defeat isis, not contain them fo. all we do is empower them to recruit more people here and around the world. we must take back their land, we must destroy their states. if we do not, the incidence you here and see about -- hear about, they will accelerate. they are accelerating. threatsake these seriously. i will make sure isis is not spending more money on weapons. onir spending their money
4:04 pm
body bags because that is what will happen if you make me the president of the united states, we will defeat isis. we did leader who will stand up for the men and women in this country left behind. the difference between four years ago and today, we have seen a continuation in the decline of the state of living in the middle of america. sometimes, the left may have an accurate description of a problem and rarely the accurate conclusion and policy. that is not mean they are not observing what is real. and what israel is americans are losing -- is real is that americans are losing hope.
4:05 pm
there are a lot of people sitting on the sidelines because they have no hope of getting back into the workforce and providing for themselves. we will give you more money, expand all of these things. want more't government handouts, they want the opportunity to rise and work and provide for themselves. has been lazy in that regard. businesses are important. we need to grow businesses. a 20% flat tax on income and corporate income. blowtorch to the internal revenue, get rid of corporate welfare come and give americans a fair shot.
4:06 pm
here is my pledge to you. you elect me president, i will lead and i have a track record of doing that stuff -- that. i know how to work with people and get things done stop -- things done. wanted to get people back to work, provide incentives to be able to rise again in society. helped write most of it. over and over, i said i will not give up. people in this country need it. and we eventually passed welfare reform. happened,s all that it would be a horrible bill. people were back to work.
4:07 pm
five years after welfare reform, poverty was at its lowest level ever measured in united states of america. [applause] give me the opportunity to go out there with a pro-worker agenda that says america can be the number one manufacturing country in the world again. made in america with pride. we can do that if we have a tax code and energy policy, trade policy that makes us competitive with the rest of the world, we will succeed in winning the battle. a lot of people talk tough about how we will win this and that. i have a plan comes an actual plan that will put us back on top. the opportunity -- that is what
4:08 pm
we had a vibrant middle america threat the last century. you see that in iowa. the processing jobs took off. he saw unemployment go down. we need to have that happen in pennsylvania, ohio, michigan. if you do that come if you layout that plan i am talking about, what state we have to win in order to win this election. ohio, michigan, indiana. we aren't talking about the people who are hurting in those states. we're not talking about the states that have been suffering. my grandfather was a coal miner. my father was an immigrant to
4:09 pm
this country. i have fought for working men and women. those who fought against bad choices like nafta, those who expose the corruption in the house, which i did. one was defeated, the other ended up in jail. i was the one who led the charge to make that happen. you want someone who will shake things up, get things done, lead -- just, anxious for someone to lead the american people to lead our pride back again and have the influence in the world. ladies and gentlemen, give me the opportunity.
4:10 pm
four years ago, you did. you gave me that opportunity. at 1% ins ago, i was the poll. iowa did your of job. you listened to the candidates. he shuffled through the rhetoric. you look at someone was accomplished something, and can make a difference in moving america forward. you stand up for the values that made our country great and you put people back to work at all levels of our society. you will get democrats and republicans to work together on something like that. you give me the opportunity to onlyat in washington, d.c. a would ask one thing, please
4:11 pm
declare me the winner on caucus night, not 18 days late. [applause] you stand with me. you got it right last time. people who elected the other guys did not get it right. you gave us the opportunity to go to those state to make the case of america being a great country and being led by someone out there fighting for them. great have not just a victory for the republicans and conservatives but more importantly, a great victory for america again and we can start feeling good about this great country. you all very much. god bless you, god bless america, and god bless iowa. thank you. [applause]
4:12 pm
4:13 pm
please join me in welcoming to the register soapbox lincoln chafee. r.mr. chafee: in 2016, we will have a new president. in november 2016 are going to make a very important choice in -- and how are going to make that choice? i would like to think that you look at past performance. that is very important. second, you look at the character of the people running. that they have courage, ethical standards. third, what is their vision for the future. what do they want to do with our great country and future generations? let me go back a bit. first of all, being in iowa, it
4:14 pm
is important to say i was a high school and college wrestling. the cyclones and the hawkeyes are some of the best wrestlers ever. it is good to be here. , i wasgot into politics a councilman for four years and a mayor for seven years. so i know what it is like to have to plow the snow, pick up the trash, make sure the ballfields are in great shape. make sure the schools are good. and keep property taxes down. that is important and i would not have been reelected those 11 years i spent at the local level of that was not doing a good job . all those local issues are so important not just in rhode island but across the country.
4:15 pm
doing those little things that affect the people, i did it. i went to the u.s. senate and i was there in very volatile times and stop bush and cheney came in -- total times. bush and cheney came in with a radical agenda. huge tax cuts that favor the wealthy, which i voted against. then came september 11 and the war in iraq. i felt that we just finished with a terrible quagmire and all of the veteran issues we had to deal with. post-traumatic stress syndrome and all of those issues that come from being in combat. why get back into another one without good cause? that is right. [applause] went my homework and i
4:16 pm
down to the cia and found out there was no evidence of mass distraction. there was never any evidence. i voted against the war and , ier those many other issues was one of the nine that signed up on a path to citizenship and secure borders. i was working hard to control , on the forefront of environmental issues. i also was working across the aisle. i was part of a gang of 14 working together, democrats and republicans. then i went to be a governor and i was governor and some of the
4:17 pm
worst economic times. high unemployment, people losing their homes to foreclosure. i had to turn around as governor. at the end of my time with governor, rhode island had the biggest drop of unemployment over my time as governor overall but five states. i invested it in education, on our public institutions. it was not easy but i took those valuable tax dollars and made them work to benefit our state of rhode island and we had the biggest drop in unemployment over any of the five states. we also pass marriage equality in rhode island. i thought that was important for our economy. this is a fact. prospers are going to when you have a tolerate
4:18 pm
society. -- tolerant society. cambridge, boston, austin, texas. they are very tolerant. the economy will do well. i also passed some immigration. the dream act, they call it. for the youngsters undocumented who want to go to our state colleges. a big difference. past. that test -- rhode island is one of the national leaders. we worked hard. we knew this would be a difficult process for getting people to sign up for our exchange. getting people back to work and doing good things for the future of our state, having the dream
4:19 pm
act for citizens, the affordable care act. that is my record. there is no other candidate running for president, no one that will stand here republican or democrat that can say they have that experience. that is important. .s i started this conversation there's not a lot of learning not -- not a lot of learning curve. that is important for our next president.
4:20 pm
.he vision for the future that is the third part. making tough votes , being honest and ethical. for my first few years in the senate, i chaired the western hemisphere subcommittee. i traveled all through this hemisphere. almost all the countries in south america. i met with fidel castro, hugo chavez. then i became chairman of the middle east subcommittee. i have been to a rock come -- lebanon.pt,
4:21 pm
after the mistake we made with invading iraq, i felt it was my responsibility to do something about fixing it. i voted against it but that is not good enough. a couple days ago, jeb bush was saying in 2009, it was mission accomplished. a secure place. we cannot have those people come back to make those same mistakes. they are delusional if they think that iraq was secure. jeb bush was saying mission accomplished. it is delusional. just like they were saying saddam hussein had wmd's, it was not truth. what i want to do is work hard to end these wars.
4:22 pm
these wars that have been going on too long. we need to get in there just like president obama is doing with the iran nuclear deal. yes, we need to work together and work with the iranians to put this together, yes we can work with the chinese to put this together. that is what we did with the iranian nuclear deal. all of the republicans were opposed to it and we cannot break up the middle east are the our future generations to create more problems. so those are the reasons i am running, first of all, my record, second of all, all through my public career, all three decades, i never had any scandals. the highest ethical standards. [applause] you will never see any kind of ethical scandals or any kind of issues. courageous votes time and time again, especially the iraq vote under enormous pressure. i have a backbone. i don't flip-flop. that is my character.
4:23 pm
that is my vision for the future, let's end these wars and bring these resources homes for our schools and for around iowa and for around the country. it is going to take resources for our health care, and those wars, bring those resources home. prosperity does come with peace. it is always what happens. if you get peace, you will have prosperity. so thank you very much for coming to iowa. to the fair, enjoy the fair. a big decision we have in 2016. first of all, it's got to be a democrat, second of all, it's got to be lincoln chafee. thank you. [applause] does anybody have a question? someone in back in red with the buttons that say vote? that is a good thing, please vote.
4:24 pm
>> [inaudible] fmr. gov. chafee: access to the ballot? or security? >> [inaudible] fmr. gov. chafee: they are both important, they are both important. you have to have access on it that is very important, you need to make sure that everybody can vote. don't have barriers to vote in. we are always striving as public officials to have both of those. i know i have in my almost 30 years of public career. make sure that you count the vote properly. yes ma'am? >> what are you going to do about the influence that money has in politics? fmr. gov. chafee: good question.
4:25 pm
the question is, what are my i going to do about the influence that money has in politics, and i run a low-budget campaign. are we going to have the next president who is all about money or are we going to have some of you like lincoln chafee who has the character and has the vision but not necessarily have the money. this is a good test. you decide if it is all about the money. what can we do beyond that? certainly i voted for mccain feingold when i was in the senate, which was a campaign-finance reform. but the supreme court struck down parts of mccain-feingold, so there are legal issues on your first amendment rights to how much you can spend, how much the wealthy can spend, of their own money. i certainly don't want to appoint any supreme court justices who want to bend that and keep bending that for the wealthy. [applause]
4:26 pm
fmr. gov. chafee: this country is getting upside down with the money coming into politics. but i believe in the people. i believe in the people. no, we are not just going to go with the billionaire candidates. come on people, stand up. we are not just going to let them tell us how to vote with their deluge of money. yes sir? >> what are your plans for a reliable and affordable power for rural america? fmr. gov. chafee: my plans for a reliable and affordable power plan for rural america is to cover six states that is smaller than iowa, and to find out how we can have safe, reliable, affordable power. there were 11 of us and we came up with a packed to get hydropower down from québec near labrador.
4:27 pm
we wanted clean, reliable, affordable, just what you are talking about. that is what is good for the role-- rural parts of america. there has got to be more of this in the discussion. we hear about wind and solar and geothermal, but we have got to access some of this hydropower. it is reliable, the rivers flow down hill every day, and it is clean, and that is what we want. in fact, we in the northeast can be the green, low-cost, energy capital of north america. that is how important hydropower can be to the mix of clean, reliable, affordable power. yes, sir? >> [indiscernible] fmr. gov. chafee: the question is, how could i dismiss the yellowcake uranium as evidence?
4:28 pm
it never a tear realized. cia.t to the i asked them, show me all of the evidence you have, i have to vote on this in three weeks. all of the analysts laid out what they had. there wasn't anything. i was there for one hour. there was just no evidence of weapons of mass destruction. that is the fact. that is the truth. there's something called the downing street memo that came back that said that the brits were saying that there was no evidence of weapons of mass destruction, it was another reason, but there were no weapons of mass distraction. it was a huge mistake and now we have to fix it. i am glad i am not the one that drank the kool-aid. yes? >> do you agree or disagree with the sec to classify broadband a service under
4:29 pm
government control? fmr. gov. chafee: that is a technical question about the sec -- fcc to provide internet service and i will have to catch up with that. i promise. i would like to have a good solid answer. as i said, i am not a flip flopper. i would like to give a good, solid answer. i will get back to you on that. yes? >> party like being in iowa? >> it is great. >> [indiscernible] fmr. gov. chafee: and wage stagnation? like i said, with those tax cuts, we were doing great with those policies, and then bush and cheney came along and they gave tax cuts to the wealthy. how did they get away with that? they also brought back deficits that then created the economy. rated the economy. this cascading sequence of mistakes. i was not buying it. what could be more popular for a politician than to vote for tax
4:30 pm
cuts? that is the most popular thing a politician can do. i thought it was more important for the future generations to keep the economy chugging along, let the wealthy pay their fair share. i voted against every single bush cheney tax cut. i care about surpluses and i don't like wage stagnation. we are back in repair mode, raging the minimum wage -- raising the minimum wage is certainly a part of it. all of these things we have to do to repair the mistakes that were made by the republicans and bush and cheney. yes, sir? >> [indiscernible] fmr. gov. chafee: how would i pick the supreme court justice? that is why this election is so important in 2016. just think about the consequence is, whether it is the environment or these wars
4:31 pm
overseas, but probably at the top of the list is the appointment to the supreme court because they are lifetime appointments. the strategy has been, i was there for two of them in the senate, and i voted for sam alito and roberts was the other one, but -- i voted against sam alito and roberts was the other one, but i voted against sam alito because he is against women's reproductive rights and other things. the strategy i said, you get these young justices, they are there for a lifetime. get them as young as possible, that is the strategy. so they are there for a long time. it is important for the future of our country.
4:32 pm
so if we look at who we are going to vote for as president, that is going to be at the top of my list. i talk about what type of people i have surrounded myself with over the years and you can before -- you can be totally confident that i would make good appointments to the supreme court, you can be totally confident about that, making good decisions for the upcoming decades. yes, ma'am? >> the deficit we have in this country, and it is not the deficit, it is the debt, and it is just getting out of hand. i'm sure the bush tax cuts are still the reason. what can we americans do to get the debts down? i am a baby boomer, we are going to be retiring soon, and these kids can't just pay this. fmr. gov. chafee: everyone here that question? that debt and the deficits and the retiring baby boomers, which i am also. how are we going to pay for it?
4:33 pm
how are we going to pay for us baby boomers and how are we going to keep social security and medicare and all of these important programs going? i would like to go back a little bit and talk about the big tax cut and the trillions of dollars spent in the war and i don't how much it is going to cost us, maybe 6 million -- $6 trillion over the next couple of years? tax cuts are so against the old republican viewpoint of taking care of the books and let people live as they see fit, the old eisenhower approach. it is about for you back deficits now and how are we going to fix this? i would say again, look at my record. i have been a mayor, i had to balance budgets, at the same time, give the people the services that they want. my time as governor of rhode island, we had tuition free schooling at our colleges because we put the money in. so you have to do both, run an efficient organization so you can put the resources where they are most needed, and keep taxes down. that is not different from a business. people in business. and i enjoy it, to be honest,
4:34 pm
4:36 pm
much. it is a great honor to be here. thank you. it is like to be very exciting for the kids and we have quite a few children taking rides today. where are the children? get them over here. that is great. children, i love iowa. great place. i have really developed a relationship with it and it is an amazing place. yes, mark. >> [indiscernible] donald trump: i have been here many times. we have a great staff with the entire place. i have really been doing it and the venues have gotten larger and larger because we have gotten some tremendous crowds. we are doing record-breaking crowds and i'm so honored when i saw the recent polls with iowa leading by a lot.
4:37 pm
we started with the smaller venues and we have gotten a grant bigger. i would still do that if it was appropriate. i love my kids. come here come the kids. does anybody want to take a ride? [applause] donald trump: it looks nice, right? how many are you taking at a time? 6, 7, 8? who want to go first? [laughter] donald trump: we are going to have some fun. they're going to have a great time. it is a great experience. jury duty. can you believe this? i look forward to it, actually. i have no expectation. i just hope they are innocent, leverages. -- whoever it is. >> [indiscernible]
4:38 pm
donald trump: she has a lot of problems with the mill situation. if you look at general petraeus, he had a fraction of that and they destroyed his life. i think she has some big problems. how are you? nice seeing you, martha. i always say you are innocent until proven guilty but certainly it would look that way. it looks very serious as far as hillary is concerned. i hope that is often happens to her by the facts are not looking good for her now and when you look at general poetry is, what he went through on a much lesser to be much worse for her. >> can you tell us in what instance you would use a nuclear weapon? wantd trump: i don't even to talk about that question.
4:39 pm
hopefully you would never have to use a nuclear weapon. but we have to be prepared. we haved hates us and to build up our military, built of our vets come and have the finest military and equipment anywhere in the world by a factor of 10. we have to be protected. we have to be so tough and strong and smart that nobody will ever mess with us. >> what would you say to hillary clinton if you ran into her? donald trump: i would say hello. biggestis your challenge forward? donald trump: we have done so well. we are being ripped off by everybody in the world whether it is china, japan, mexico. mexico is becoming the new china in terms of trade. so many companies -- yesterday, i read nabisco is moving to mexico. give me a break. we have to reverse that. we need jobs in our country.
4:40 pm
we will take jobs that from china, japan. we will make our country great again and that will be the challenge and we will do it and it will not be that difficult. i spoke with kyle -- carl icahn. we have the best business people in the world in this country. they will all help us and believe me, when i get the right thele negotiating with right countries, we will come out on top every single time. that is what we need. he talked about jeb bush being a puppet of his donors. donald trump: he is a puppet to his donors. he has lobbyists. i know them. and he made statements over the last couple of days that are incredible, trying to justify the or in iraq. and i don't know if you saw his recent statement. he said the u.s. has to prove to iraq we have skin in the game.
4:41 pm
we have spent $2 trillion, thousands of lives lost, wounded warriors, and he said we have to prove we have skin in the game. one of the dumbest statements i have ever heard. we don't have to prove anything. the iraqi officials are a bunch of crooks. iran is taking over iraq. it was one of the dumbest things ever. i think his brother probably said hey, you are killing me. that was his war and he looks very bad so jeb bush try to push back. when he said we have to prove to iraq we have skin in the game and we have lost all of those lies and all of that money, i think he should apologize to the families of the people. critique of him as being a puppet, that meant you were a puppeteer. donald trump: i was one of the
4:42 pm
greatest but now i am on a different site. side. many of the people who gave to everybody are friends of mine. these are not people that are doing it because they like the color of his hair, believe me. these are highly sophisticated killers. when they give $2 million to jeb, they have him like a puppet. he is their puppet. believe me. i had yesterday a lobbyist call me up. for his client, i don't blame him, he said i want to put $5 million into your campaign and i said i don't need it or want it. because when you can back to me in two years anyone help for a company that you representing or country that you are
4:43 pm
representing, i am going to do the right thing for the people of the united states and i don't have to insult you. i appreciated but don't want your i am turning down so much money. $5 million. if he put it up i would feel obligated as i'm a loyal person. just like jeb bush. i'm not just talking about jeb, hillary too. nobody plays the game better than i did and that is the way it works. >> -- qualify to be president in your view? trump: nobody will do the job but i will do. i will bring back jobs, strengthen the military, take care of our vets. i will get rid of obamacare. look at what is happening for the costs of your insurance is gone through the roof. look what it is happening. it is terrible. i will take care of people in it will be better to women. there is another thing i heard with jeb. woman's health issues he didn't
4:44 pm
want to fund and then he goes back to her three hours later and said he misspoke. i will be so great to women. i cherish women and women have not been taking care of properly. when i hear somebody like jeb bush talking about we are not going to fund and then he comes and said he made a mistake, he takes it back. but he does not mean it from the another question. heart. another question. >> [indiscernible] donald trump: it will come out tomorrow on "meet the press." i just put out a policy on immigration i think is very comprehensive. we start with the tax policy which i have to be very good at. , who knows the system better than me? i'm putting out a tax policy over the next you weeks. we are putting them out one by one. i think you will see that it will be very important. thank you for all your nice words. >> a lot of voters are saying they really with this year policies. they are very eager to see the substance behind -- donald trump: i think the press
4:45 pm
is more eager to see it than the voters. i think they like me and they understand the and think i will do the job. when you put out a policy like a 14 point plan, a lot of times in the first hour of negotiation goes astray but you may end up with a better deal. that is how life works. when i do a deal i do not say here is 14 points. i go out and do it. i know the press wants it. i don't think that people care. i think they trust me. that is what it is all about. i have been getting politicians to pass whatever it wanted all my life. nobody has more experience. nobody is more experience dealing with politicians. i have been dealing with them all my life. whether it is big new york city zoning deals which are probably tougher than most of the things i will be dealing with with foreign countries. i built a city on the west side of manhattan. talk about getting zoning. getting zoning for trump tower,
4:46 pm
68 stories. i've been given with politicians all my life. they are fine, they are wonderful. they are all talk and no action. they are selling this, country down the tubes and they are easy to deal with believe me. >> why aren't you speaking at the i was so box question -- iowa soapbox? are you afraid to take questions? trump: that paper was not relevant to me. and a notice another -- a number of other people are not speaking there. yes, i'm taking questions right now. goinging to take -- am i to take questions? she just asked if i'm going to reporters.in my taking questions from reporters? they will tell you i'm taking questions. [applause] trump: unlike hillary, do we agree? go ahead. [indiscernible]
4:47 pm
donald trump: i had not heard that. i guess that is a compliment in many ways. yes, go ahead. >> my concern is protecting the border and enforcing the laws -- donald trump: you are going to love me in terms of illegal immigration. it will be a wall. nobody is going through my wall. trump builds walls. we are building the wall. it will be strong and solid and policed. all you have to do is fly a drone over it. they can see that immediately. nobody can go under, nobody's going over it, and we are good of a big door for people to come in legally. door forave a big people to come in legally.
4:48 pm
you will be very happy with me. yeah? >> would a president trump the same as candidate trump with foreign leaders? donald trump: even better. foreign leaders -- i've had great relationships over the years. i had great relationships with people over the years. i am leading in every poll. the big ones and little i am leading ones. in iowa because when people look at scott walker, his state has a $2.2 billion deficit. it's a $2.2 billion deficit. nobody was willing to say it but me. and i did not want to say it. i would not have said it until the attacks me. then i said thank you very much and i set it. >> i am talking about foreign leaders.
4:49 pm
donald trump: i get along great with them. i am building in china. building all over the world. why, do you think they're getting long good right now? putin can't stand obama. who likes obama? i am talking worldwide. he is not getting along with anybody. hillary clinton was the single worst secretary of state in the history of this country. the world collapsed around us while she was secretary of state. in my opinion, kerry might be worse because he is making a deal with iran that is so bad and so dangerous and so incompetent and stupid that it will have grave consequences. grave consequences. do on day to you one stop the iranians from getting into their weapon? donald trump: very forceful action.
4:50 pm
israel sold out. you cannot let iran have nuclear weapon. when they marched on the street saying "have to israel, death to united states." it cannot happen. it will not happen here. >> you are a self funding your own campaign. heavyset a budget a budget foret this endeavor? donald trump: irrelevant. i make $400 million a year. what difference does it make? i want to make the country great. that is what i want to do. my business has been so successful. my children and my executives will run that easily. i won't even think about it. my soul purpose will be taking the brain that built a great business with some of the great assets of the world, i have some the great assets in the world.
4:51 pm
best locations in manhattan. trump tower, 57th and fifth. that is what i do whatever it is. whatever kind of a brain that is will be used to making our country rich again, trade deals. making our country rich. and great.we cannot make it great unless we make it -- we need the money. my whole focus will be this country and making it great. >> would you spend $1 billion on election? donald trump: i would if i had to. >> [indiscernible] donald trump: yes, i do. i have exceptions and i've been open about that. >> what is the biggest challenge your campaign faces going into the fall? have you made any mistakes so far? donald trump: i don't think i have made mistakes. they do the polls in my never go up. when i said mexico, i was talking about illegal immigration.
4:52 pm
the people understood it even though the press did not want them to. when i talk about john mccain i was saying how bad he treated veterans. they are treated badly. than they do a poll. mccain or trump? and i swap them in the polls. the veterans like me better because they know i will take care of them. after 30 years he is not taking care of them. and this last thing with fox. all you have to do is ask roger who won. i do not think i have made any mistakes. i'm sure i will at some point, but so far you have to say as a work of badly? reported is not want to give me an answer. >> your wife is the possible first lady? they are not doing it to any other candidate. did you run a profile? that will not happen. she is fantastic. >> what kind of things we do different for this country? donald trump: almost everything.
4:53 pm
what things in my candidate different for this country? almost everything, because that is what has to happen. everything we do is wrong. the military, we are not taking care of the military or our vets. we are not taking care of our country, our finances. we're not taking care of our trade deals. when was the last time he saw this country have a victory? we do not have victories? we do not have victories against china in trade. china just devalued their currency. that is the sucking sound. that means jobs and money coming out of our country. what they did with that evaluation, the biggest devaluation that had into decades, they are killing us. they will not be doing it when i am watching. i think our people have no idea what is happening. do you agree with me? is everybody agree with me? >> yeah! donald trump: let's give them a helicopter ride. come on, it was going first? where are your parents?
4:56 pm
register political soapbox. i am carol hunter. our next speaker is bernie sanders. he is a u.s. senator from vermont and he is running for the democratic nomination. [laughter] [applause] >> mr. sanders was elected to four terms as the mayor of burlington, vermont, and served in the u.s. house of representatives and has been the u.s. senator since 2007 and was elected as an independent. welcome to the soapbox stage senator bernie send her's. senator sanders: thank you. a lot of people here.
4:57 pm
thank you. know, 3.5 months ago, we just began to campaign and everybody says that this campaign was a joke. who believes that the american people are prepared to take on the economic and political establishment of america? [applause] sanders: 3.5 months have gone by. all overad huge crowds america, iowa, california, new hampshire, oregon. you name it. what iople ask me why tell them is the american people say enough is enough. this country belongs to all of
4:58 pm
us, not just a handful of billionaires. [applause] before i get going, i want to wish a happy birthday to some institution called social security. 80 years old. and let me be very clear -- virtually all of the republican candidates in one form or another once to cut social security. together, we are not going to let them do that. have seniors in this on the trying to get by 12th $13,000 a year. disabled people unable to put enough food on the table.
4:59 pm
socialwill not cut security, we will expand social security. [applause] and we're going to do that by caping the -- lifting the on taxable income. in america today, what do we see is the disappearance of the great middle-class. we see millions of our brothers and sisters in iowa, vermont, all over this country, working longer hours for lower wages. people are working to, three jobs in order to put food on the table. meanwhile, almost all of the new income come all of the new wealth is going to the top 1%. that is going to change.
5:00 pm
we need an economy that works for working people, not a handful of billionaires. let me tell you something about this campaign finance system that we have today. it is a corrupt system. united will go down in history as one of the worst decisions ever made by a supreme court. let me repeat a promise i have made two other crowds, and that is, no nominee of mine through the supreme court will get that position unless he or she pledges to make certain that citizens united is overturned.
