they don't care about clean energy, the way we should. they will not raise the minimum wage. don't think he is a problem. -- they don't think that's a problem. we are seeing them in an alternate reality. we need to make the tax code fair. that means we are going where the money is, the money is where the wealthy are. we will change the tax code and make them pay for all of the benefits they have here in america. [applause] sec. clinton: there's a bunch of things i want to do to close the loopholes. i am the only candidate on either side who has said plainly idle raise your incomes-- plainly i will raise your incomes, not your middle-class taxes.

i believe that we need funding to help make college affordable. to help with early childhood education. to do the things that will lift us up. i went to omaha a few weeks ago. warren buffett endorsed me, and i was very happy to have that support. [applause] sec. clinton: he said he agreed with me that taxes had to go up on rich people, like him. he said that will make into popular, but i believe he is right. i support "the buffett rule." i believe that people that make a million dollars should pay 30%. right now, because of all the

loopholes, they pay less taxes than those of you who are teachers. i want a fair share on incomes of $5 million or more. these are people who pull every shenanigan in the book. they send money to the bermudas, bahamas, money flying around so that it cannot be taxed the way it is supposed to. we have to and that.-- to end that. we have to go over and over again with what it is we need to end. this is gimmicks, invasion, turning backs on americans. this is an example that has outraged. -- has outraged me. there's a company in wisconsin that makes auto parts.

in 2008, you might remember, the auto industry was on the brink of collapse. the republican said let it die-- republicans said let it die. president obama said, that millions of people's jobs. we have to do something. you and i bailed out the auto industry. it turned out to be a good investment. they paid it back. one of those copies asking for help with johnson controls-- was johnson controls. auto has had the best year in a while did they have-- in a while. johnson controls will pretend to sell itself and move itself to europe so that it can avoid american taxes.

it is using the taxpayers that failed out. this is not an inversion, it is a permission. -- perversion. i will go after them when i am president. [applause] sec. clinton: you see, i have a broader view about what we need to do to make sure that people not only pay their fair share, but they don't wreck the economy like we saw them in 2008. the governor, senator, and i agree that we have got to prevent wall street, the financial markets, and others from doing what they did. but, we have a slight difference

could have no argument -- difference. i have no argument -- i want to let you know that we now have the law. we passed it. the dodd frank law. we have to pull the trigger on the process if the banks pose a systemic risk. we are keeping our eyes on what the banks are doing. that is where i part company with my two friends. 2008 was not just the big banks. thank you. lehman brothers, aig, countrywide mortgage, wachovia. if all you do is talk about the big banks, you miss the big picture. we have to go after the shadow banking industry. we have to make sure they can't

hurt us. that is what i have pledged to do. independent observers who have looked at what we have all proposed have all said, i am the toughest, most effective, most comprehensive. people like paul krugman. the best evidence, the folks that know i have the toughest plan other -- are the republicans. they are running $6 million with of ads right now. hedge fund guys have started a super pac to run against me. karl rove. another billionaire just jumped into the fray. ask yourself, why are they so nervous about me? i will tell you. they know me. they know that i say what i mean and i do what i say. i know how to go after them. [applause] sec. clinton: we are going to

take the fight to them. we can and we also have to make progress. i am a progressive who likes to get things done. that is what i believe in. the debate i am having with senator sanders over health care is important. we both have the same goal. universal coverage. before, it was obamacare -- before was obamacare, it was hillary care. i was working to get universal coverage. they beat us, the --the drug companies. they beat us. i got children's health insurance passed. i was thrilled when president obama signed the affordable care act. democrats have been trying to do this since harry truman. we know what the alternative is.

republicans want to turn it back to the insurance companies, so that they can go and basically charge what they want, to type coverage-- deny people coverage, charge women more, not let young people be on parents policies. i know. ted cruz was confronted by a man at one of his events today who told him about his brother-in-law who had never been able to afford insurance. he could not go to a doctor. when he finally did, he found out he was riddled with cancer. the man said, why do you want to repeal this? finally, people like my brother in law can get insurance. ted cruz went off on an ideological critical comment

about affordable care. he never said what the alternative is. "what would you replace it with?" they can tell you. -- they can't tell you. that's fine with them. that's not fine with me. i will not let that happen. [applause] sec. clinton: we have fought too hard and too long. we are at 90% coverage. i will fix what is wrong with the affordable care act. we will go after prescription drug costs. but, i will tell you, we cannot start over, my friends. we cannot throw this country

back into gridlock. people cannot wait for another 20 year debate. i met a woman who started -- a woman came to see me, she said, look at this. she started taking medicine, 10 shots, back in 1988. about $10 a shot. it stayed pretty steady. last month she went to the pharmacist to get her shots, and the pharmacist said it would cost her more than $14,000 for the same 10 shots. i looked at the letter, and i said no, here is what is going on. there are a lot of drugs that have been around for a long time. there are no new investments, they just make the same drug, they sell it, they make a profit. they just keep it in the marketplace.

a bunch of hedge fund guys and speculators said this is a good opportunity for us. they started to buy these little companies, and then people needed them, and they began increasing the price through the roof. valiant pharmaceuticals is one of those that is doing this. gobbling up drugs that are already out there, and then charging more than people can pay. i think we need to call it what it is. it is predatory pricing. we need every tool at our legal disposal to shut this down. [applause] i will go after them, i will prevent them from doing this to people. [applause] somebody said to me, i have been railing about this for a couple of days, somebody said their stock price fell, and i said good, i hope they get the message rate i will not let this happen.

then i was in davenport, and a man said thank you for defending the affordable care act. he had a grandchild born with a congenital heart defect. she has had five operations. under the affordable care act from a lifetime limits were removed so they could get the insurance they needed for something as serious as open-heart surgery on a child. just yesterday i was in des moines, and i met a woman before it went out to speak and she said i want to thank you for defending the reportable care act -- affordable care act. im doing it because i believe in it and it is the best shot we have. she said just a few years ago my daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer, and because of the affordable care act, i could put her on my policy. we began her treatment. she got really sick, and i had

to quit my job. i do not know what we were going to do, but that i could go into the marketplace and i could get insurance that would cover me. this woman told me this heartrending story about her daughter, and a happy ending. her daughter just got married. [applause] but she do not know what you would have done without the affordable care act for her treatment and insurance. we cannot repeal it, and we cannot start over. we have to build on it, make it work, and get us to 100%. it is a lot easier to get from 90% to 100% then to go from 0% to 100%. [applause] i want to thank all the teachers, the retired teachers who are here tonight. [applause] i am so proud to have your endorsement, and i will be your

apartment -- your partner. we will work together for education for our kids. we need to take into account for the child's needs. i have the most heartbreaking conversations about teachers as i traveled across the state. teachers have raised their hands in my meetings and they have said it has been below zero. a teacher was saying this, and a little kid comes to school with a t-shirt on. i know that is families having such a hard time, we try to help. teachers do not believe that their job is to impart knowledge, academic knowledge. the teachers i know believe that their job is to lift that each child, to give every single child a chance to live up to their god-given potential. [applause] here are some things i think would help. we need early childhood education.

zero years old to five years old. this would help prepare so many more kids to be successful when they got to school. we need more wraparound services in school. we need to get nurses back in schools. we need social workers, we need people to deal with the problems that kids are bringing to school. [applause] and we need to make college affordable again for every young person in america. [applause] i have a plan to do that. i have laid out my plan. i have told you how much and what koch -- it would cost. i want debt free tuition.

here is the difference. i would anybody who cannot afford it to be able to have tuition without borrowing anything. i do not believe giving free college to donald trump's youngest child is in the best interest of all the hard-working americans who need help. [applause] i think we can do it in a sustainable way by, number one, asking the colleges and universities to take a look hard look at what they are charging. because of all you do is have a big glut of free money, the costs are going to keep going up because there is no incentive to rein them in. colleges and universities need to understand they cannot just dump everything on tuition. we have to live away from that. we also have to get states -- i want a partnership with state. i wanted to quit building prisons and start putting money

back into education, including higher education. [applause] and i believe, i believe it is important that you are going to college, and you are getting this debt free tuition, to work 10 hours a week. make sure you make a contribution, so you feel like you're invested in this. and then when you get out, if you have debt, i believe we should let you refinance your debt and save thousands of dollars, give that payment down, get it off with an interest rate, given as a percentage of your income. that will make it affordable for people who have debt right now to be able to get out from under us. -- under it. [applause] there is a lot of work for us to do here. i am very committed to fighting hard on all of these friends here at home. there is another big group of issues i disagree fundamentally with the republicans over. they want to take away everybody's rights.

humans rights, civil rights, women's rights, gay rights, workers rights, voting rights. that is ripping out the progress we have made. i will tell you where i stand. i support a woman's right to make her own choices about health care. [applause] i support planned parenthood and will fight against this being defunded. [applause] i support marriage equality, and i will work against discrimination against the lgbt community. [applause] i support voting runs, and i will work to overturn citizens united, and get the corrupt money out of politics. i support unions and workers rights. they built the american middle class, and they are important to our future.

i support criminal justice reform, and i will work to try to heal the blows that we have seen between our races and people across our country. we have to end the era of mass incarceration and provide second chances and more opportunity. [applause] i will defend social security against privatization, the biggest wall street giveaway yet to the republicans have proposed. i will fix the v.a., but i will not let the republicans privatize the v.a. and take away the guarantee of health care for american veterans. [applause] and i will fight for common sense gun safety measures against the gun lobby. [applause] you know, this morning in ames, iowa, i was endorsed by gabby giffords and her wonderful husband mark kelly.

i will tell you, the courage and commitment of those two wonderful americans is so one overwhelming. to see it in person. to see this woman, who i knew before she was shot in the head, while meeting with her can do to us in the parking lot of a shopping center, and others who were there to meet with her. a little nine-year-old girl who had come to meet her congress member was killed. and mark kelly, who served our nation 25 years in the military. served as an astronaut on the space shuttle. he said i'm not political, i was never involved in that, i just served my country. he said we cannot go on like this. this is wrong. 90 people on average a day died from gun violence in america.

that is 33,000 people a year. homicide, suicide, terrible, avoidable actions. common sense gun reform, like background checks, closing loopholes, not letting people on the no-fly list by guns in america. if they are too dangerous to fly, they should not have a gun, for heavens take. -- sake. these proposals are supported by 92% of americans, and 82% of gun owners. i have been talking to gun owners. they say i have been thinking about it, they just want you to do it so it does not interfere with my rights. i say absolutely. you have rights. it has to be done, in accordance with the constitution. but don't you think we are smart enough to figure out how to do that? more than 2 million purchases have been prohibitive because of the brady act that was passed while my husband was president. [applause]

i hope you will consider this as an important issue because there are just too many people dying. we cannot stop every death, i am not claiming that, but we ought to try. i think we can. let me say i final word about safety here at home. i was a senator on 9/11, i feel passionately about defending our country, keeping us safe from terrorists and others who wish us harm. i laid out a plan on how i would do that. a how i would defeat isis, however make sure that we lead a coalition of air power to help back up the arabs and the kurds who have to do the fighting, because i will not send american combat troops back to syria or

iran. [applause] we also have to take them on, preventing their foreign fighters, there for 20, and take them on online. and we also have to pull together in our country. that is the point i want to make. after 9/11, we had a plan. it was an informational program. if you see something suspicious, or you hear something suspicious, call somebody. call the police, call the fbi, call 911. it relied on everybody being on the same size, knowing that we were going to protect all of us against any terror attack. and we did, we got information that foiled attacks, and broke them up, and i think it worked because everybody felt like they were part of it. when you hear leading republican candidates say what they say about american muslims, here is what i want you to think.

it is not only offensive, and contrary to our values, but it is dangerous. it is a dangerous position to be taking. [applause] all of a sudden, some americans are made to feel like they are outside of the circle. they are not wanted. their information is not needed. the oldest mosque in america is here in cedar rapids, iowa. [applause] you know people, people who are your neighbors, people who are your colleagues. we need to all be in this together. and then we have to have a coalition of nations, including muslim nations, to defeat the threat of terrorism. i've put together a coalition, i put together the coalition that imposed sanctions on iran, that drove them to the negotiating table, got the agreement that put the lid on their nuclear weapons program. i know what it takes to build a coalition, and i can tell you this -- [applause] it is a lot harder to build a coalition when you have people running from united they

residency or insulting religion of the people we need to build a coalition. [applause] this campaign is like a job interview. you all have to decide, who is ready to be president and commander in chief on day one of january 2017. and if you will go caucus for me on monday night, if you will go stand up for me, if you will be there for me, i promise you this -- i will stand for you, i will fight for you through this campaign, and in the white house i will work my heart out for you for the kind of future of our country that we all deserve and want. thank you all, and god bless you. just two days before we caucus on monday night. debate? iys see the think marco did great. we are going to ask you to caucus to marco. all we are asking you to commit to is to show up monday night at 7:00 p.m. at the school or church that is your caucus site for a one-hour meeting. caucus, we commit to ask you to fill out one of these cards so we can stay in touch with 8:00 and remind you the date, time, and location of your caucus. next please welcome the president of the united states, marco rubio. sen. rubio: thank you. thank you. i am so honored to be here. let me clear a couple of things up. jack is right, it will be at a church or school near your home.

righture you find out the one. this is important. thank you so much for being here. i have touched and overwhelmed by the amount of people here. i know you are here because you take very seriously the role that you play. in about 48 hours, the people of iowa will be the first americans to get a chance to ask the most important question of this generation, what kind of country will america be in the 21st century? and 20020th century years, america has been a special country. we were founded on a powerful truth that our rights do not come from government, lies, leaders. our rights come from god. our rights come from our creator . this is why we embrace free enterprise. this is why we embrace individual liberty. it made us the freest people

ever. that is why the american example , american dream has inspired people to pursue it both here and in their own homeland. now all of those things are in question. a growing number of americans are starting to doubt what kind of country we will be, because many things that made us unique and special are threatened. i saw a poll recently that said more than 50% of young americans, when asked if the american dream is still alive, over 50% said no. if that were to become true, america stops being a special nation. when was the moment the american dream began to erode, when all the things that made america special started to slip away? i can point to one moment in particular. yeah. no, not super bowl 42. i do not even know who played in

super bowl 42, but it was not the miami dolphins, i can tell you that. i think we can point to the year 2008 when this nation elected a president not interested in fixing america's problems. for the first time in our lifetime, we elected a president dedicated to changing america. not changing our problems, changing the country. changing the government's role in our lives and america's role in the world. the result is a president who summarily and regularly undermines the constitution of the united states in a lawless way, a president who assaults the second amendment, our religious liberty, who views america as an arrogant global power that needs to be cut down to size. that undermines our allies like israel, that got our is -- military.

it is not easy to win a nobel peace months after taking office after not doing anything. it takes a president that believes america needs to be cut down to size, and that is what we have had. the result is a real growing frustration, and an anger that i would say is not just at democrats, angry at republicans, angry at washington. this frustration has been building for a while. i sought in 2010. that is why i ran for the u.s. senate. my opponent was the sitting governor of florida who said he was a republican but i knew he was not. who said he wanted go to washington and oppose barack obama but i knew he would go and embrace his agenda, so i decided to run for the senate. the entire senate leadership told me i could not run and if i did, they would go against me. . did, and i won

almost the same people came forward in 2015 and said, you cannot run for president. why? you have to wait in line, wait your turn. i said, after seven years with barack obama, there is no time for patients. wrong,et this election there will be no turning back for america. we cannot afford to lose this election. we cannot afford to wake up on the first wednesday of november to find out that bernie sanders was elected president of the united states. usually that is a slur, bernie sanders calls himself a socialist. i think he is a good candidate for president. i want to say something to you. i had an event last night where there was three young men from sweden, really nice people. i felt really bad.

i do not want to be sweden, but i like sweden. i thought they would be angry and they said, why would you wish that on our country? [applause] said,ubio: another person sweden does not have a president , they had a king, prime minister. i said if they did, it would be bernie sanders. we cannot elect a socialist president and we cannot elect hillary clinton. she was asked earlier this week in iowa, what do you think about nominating barack obama for the supreme court? she said, what a wonderful idea. i never heard that, can you imagine? violates the constitution like it is part of his job description as president , and we are going to put him on the supreme court court to interpret and apply it? i'm asking for you to caucus for lose this election. me on monday.

i'm the conservative that will clinton or bernie sanders, and they know it. that is why they spent so much time attacking me. hillary clinton does not want to run against me. i cannot wait to run against hillary clinton. [applause] unite the: we will republican party and the conservative moment. we will have our primary and it will get heated but we will , bring everyone together. we cannot win if we are divided. we cannot win if we are divided against each other. you know it happens in the last couple of days of the campaign, the desperation kicks in, the kitchen sink comes out and is thrown at you. [laughter] sen. rubio: ted cruz is running an ad has a video that edits my , words, cuts them in half, distorts what i am saying. we know these things are going to happen. none of it bothers me. you have seen it before in iowa.

we are going to bring the conservative moment together -- movement together. we cannot win if we are divided against each other. being united alone will not the enough. we need to grow the conservative movement. we need to go to people that have not for a conservative or republican in a long time and convince them of the truth that , the country would be better off with us, instead of the other side. i look forward with passion the making that argument. i look forward to reaching out to americans who live paycheck to paycheck. i grew up paycheck to paycheck. my father was a bartender, my mother was a stock worker at kmart, a made, a cashier. i know what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck. i grew up paycheck to paycheck. i lived paycheck to paycheck. people in my family still live paycheck to paycheck. they are teachers, nurses, firefighters.

they struggle. hillary clinton cannot lecture me about living paycheck to paycheck. i cannot wait for that debate. i intend to go out and talk to young americans staggering under , the weight of student loans. a 500% increase in student loans in the last 10 years. people graduating with thousands thathousands of dollars they borrowed to pay for a degree that did not lead to a job. they cannot lecture me about student loans. i had a student loan. i had a student loan three years ago. i never thought i'd pay it off. the only way to get rid of a student loan, either you pay it or you die. [laughter] sen. rubio: you cannot even get rid of it and bankruptcy. i got rid of it by writing a book called "the american son." now available in paperback. [laughter] sen. rubio: if it hadn't been for that, i would still have the loan. i remember when jeanette and i first got married my student

, loan was the second biggest item in the budget, right after the rent, more than the car. they cannot lecture me about the issue. that's why i spent so much time talking about it. i am the only republican that ever talks about it. i look forward to campaigning among families that are raising children in the 21st century. they cannot lecture me about that. jeanette and i are raising four children. it is harder than ever to raise children with the values you try to teach at your home and your church, instead of the values they try to ram down our throat in the popular culture. [applause] sen. rubio: if you caucus for me, we will win the nomination, we will unite the republican party, we will expand the conservative movement. we will defeat hillary clinton and bernie sanders and turn this country around, and here is how. i will tell you a couple things

i will do when i am president. it is not enough to be angry. you have a right to be frustrated. your government has failed you in both parties for longer than seven years. although the last seven years have been the worst. you have a right to be angry, .ut anger is not a plan anger is not a solution. it can be a motivator. anger may lead you to take action but you have to take action. you deserve to know if the next president of the united states is going to do and you trust them with your vote. i will take the of office, i will place my left hand on the bible and my right hand in the air and swear to protect and defend the constitution. unlike barack obama, i will actually mean it. [applause] sen. rubio: that means i will defend and not undermine the second amendment, because you have a constitutional right to be able to protect yourself and

your family from criminals and from terrorists. we will protect the second amendment. we will protect religious liberty. every american has the constitutional right to live out faithaching is of their in their home and in every aspect of their life. [applause] after i am done taking the oath of office, i'm going straight to the oval office and when i get into the oval office i am going to immediately repeal every signal one of barack obama's unconstitutional executive orders. [applause] sen. rubio: what does that mean? it means that all of these crazy epa rules, on my first day office, they are gone. [applause] sen. rubio: it means this effort by the federal government to take over our schools with things like common core, on my

first day in office that ends. [applause] that means the use of federal taxpayer money to pay for abortions overseas, that stops. [applause] sen. rubio: on my first day in the office everyone in the world , will know that america is once again on israel's side. on my first day in office, i will cancel barack obama's deal with iran. my first day there. [applause] sen. rubio: we are going to win energize -- re-energize our economy. today it has flatlined because government is taking over. we will reimburse free enterprise. we will fix the tax code, rollback regulations save social , security and medicare. we will bring the budget under control. we are going to fully utilize our energy resources. when we do all that, there will be no better place the world to start a business or expand an existing one.

america will be the best economy in the world, will create the best paying jobs of the new 21st century economy. [applause] sen. rubio: we are going to deal with health care. everybody running for president, as a republican, is against obamacare. i am the only one running for president who has ever done anything meaningful about it because when they created obamacare, it created a bailout fund. they wanted to use your taxpayer money to bail out by that insurance companies that lost money under obamacare. in 2014, i led the effort and wiped out the bailout fund. those who ours saying they like obamacare, they are saying "what he did is terrible, it will lead to the collapse of obamacare." i hope it does. [laughter] sen. rubio: we are getting rid of obamacare once and for all and we will put the american people back in charge of their own health care decisions. [applause]

sen. rubio: i have plan to replace obamacare. it's on our website. it is clearly laid out and you will see it works. it is better than what we had before obamacare and is a lot better than obamacare. you probably already know this by now my parents were not from , this country. my father and mother were immigrants. my grandparents are immigrants. entire family are immigrants. i was raised in a community of immigrants. this is an issue i understand personally and deeply. in the 21st century, our number one priority before anything else is to keep isis out of america. it is a threat we did not face before but now we need to do things differently. there is a well organized, well-funded, sophisticated radical jihadist group that would like to send people into the united states as killers disguised as immigrants or a refugee or something else. the world has changed.

this is not a religious test. this is not about discrimination. it is about common sense. it is about public safety. when i am president of the united states unless we know who , you are and why are coming, you're not getting into the united states of america. [applause] sen. rubio: i am also tired of hearing that securing the borders is anti-immigrant. that is a lie. our borders is what sovereign countries do. instead of hiring 20,000 new irs agents, we are going to hire 20,000 new border agents. we will finish the 700 miles of fencing and walls we need. we will have a mandatory e-verify system. if you're here legally, you will not be able to get hired. people overstaying their visas

is 40% to 50% of the problem. if we do these things, and we will bring illegal immigration under control. we will not do anything else on immigration until that is in place and working and the federal government has won the confidence of the american people, that in fact our illegal immigration problem is under control for the first time in 30 years and once and for all. , we will deal to rest of it. not amnesty. not amnesty. illegal immigrants will be immediately deported and sanctuary cities, when i am president they will lose their federal funding. [applause] sen. rubio: my most important job, when elected president, will be to be commander in chief of this great country. it is the reason why we have a federal government. the world today is more dangerous than it was seven years ago and i'm sad to say, our country is less safe. more dangerous because of a

lunatic in north korea with nuclear weapons. the chinese steel our secrets and are massively building up their military. the chinese government, we have no quarrel with the chinese people. the chinese communist party is stealing our secrets, building up their military, taking over the south china sea. vladimir putin is sowing instability in the middle east. iran is about to receive $100 billion from barack obama's sanctions relief which they will use to build up their military and one day acquire a nuclear weapon of their own. isis is the most sophisticated, well-funded terror threat in the history of mankind. isis is not just a bunch of people on the back of pickup trucks, the way the president described them in the state of the union. isis is an organization that has affiliates in over 12 countries. indonesia, the philippines, multiple countries. you saw what basis did and paris

and what they inspired in san bernardino. this is a group that burns people alive in cages. they take little girls that are nine and 10 years old and sells them off as brides for the fighters. this is what we are dealing with. in the face of these threats, what is happening to the military? let me tell you what is happening to our military. we are on the verge of the smallest army since the end of world war ii. we are on the verge of the smallest navy we have had in 100 years. and we will soon have the smallest air force and the oldest airplanes we have ever had. the world is growing more dangerous and our military is growing weaker. here is what is really unacceptable. there are people are running for president in the party of reagan who have voted for budgets that brag about cutting defense spending even more. this is unacceptable. now maybe some of you do not agree with me on defense spending but i will be frank , with you, when i'm president of the united states, we're not cutting the military. we are rebuilding the u.s.

military because the world is a safer and better place when america is the strongest military in the world. [applause] sen. rubio: by the way these , defense cuts are not just dangerous. they are unfair to the men and women in uniform. we are still putting them in harm's way. we are not providing resources or rules of engagement to allow them to succeed. when i'm president, we will have a real war on terror. here is what it is going to look like, it is not a complicated war. here's what it will look like. the best intelligence agencies in the world are going to tell us where the terrorists are. the best military in the world is going to destroy the terrorists. if we capture any of them alive, they will not get a lawyer or be told they have the right to remain silent. they are not getting a court hearing and manhattan. if we capture them alive, they have a one-way ticket to guantanamo.

we are going to find out everything that they know, everything that they now. [applause] sen. rubio: and, we're going to take care of our veterans. and let me just stop at this moment and say if you are a member of the armed forces or uniformur country in everybody here thanks you for , your service to the united states of america. [applause] because when isis struck in san bernardino, it was firefighters and police officers that responded and saved lives. me for one, i'm tired of reading all of the stuff about all of the police officers are so bad. let me tell you the police officers and the firefighters are. they are the people we will call

tonight is something that happens in our lives, and they are willing to die so that we can be safe. we thank them for what they do for our country. [applause] sen. rubio: we are going to take care of our veterans. we are not doing that now. what is happening now is immoral. we have a record number of veterans committing suicide, homeless, unemployed, waiting in long lines for the care they earned and deserve. when i'm president, that ends. when i am president, if you're not doing a good job at the da, , you will be fired. veterans will be able to take their benefits to any hospital or doctor, not just the one the government runs. i was born in, it is the country that literally changed the history of my family. when my parents were here in 1956, they had a few relatives living here, they had no money, not much of an education. my father actually stopped going to school when he was nine because his mother died. he had to work but he never went back to school. he would work for the next 70 years of his life. this notion that you get here and it's instant success, it's not true. it was hard and they were discouraged, but they persevered. my parents never became rich the truth is, or famous people people, never made a lot of would never you have heard of them had i not run for office. my parents are not rich or famous, but they were successful. here is why. less than 10 years after my parents arrived they owned a

home, not a mansion. they owned a home in a safe and stable neighborhood. they were able to raise four children. they were able to retire with dignity and security. most important of all, they were able to leave all four children better off than themselves. that story would've been impossible anywhere else on this planet. if my parents had taken their dreams and hopes to any other nation, i am not sure where i would be right now but i would not be standing on the stage, running for the highest office in the land. i think -- thank god every day that they came here, to the one place on earth where what they did was possible. it was possible because america is truly exceptional. what we have in this country, we can never take for granted. know that what is given to us is an incredible gift, the single greatest nation in the history of mankind. a place where hard work and perseverance allows you to fulfill your potential. in the history of mankind, almost everyone has been born

into a society that tells you what you are allowed to be. unless your parents are rich, unless you are politically connected, you are limited by how far you can go, but not here. we are special. why did that happen? america is not special by accident. this did not happen on its own. america is special, because for 200 years, each generation in our history did their part. for over 200 years each , generation in this country confronted challenges and embraced opportunities. now, the time has come for us to do the same. if we fail in this endeavor, so -- endeavor, it means that people like like hillary clinton . bernie sanders have won if hillary putting or bernie sanders wins, all the damage barack obama has done to america becomes permanent. obamacare is here to stay. unconstitutional executive orders are here to stay.

cuts to the military can continue. the standing in the world will erode. our second amendment rights will continue to erode. if they win, everything that barack obama has done remains in place, and worse. hillary clinton in particular cannot be the president of the united states. hillary clinton is not qualified to be commander in chief. she stored classified information on her private server because she believes she's above the law. she believes she is above the law. in fact the information is so , classified they cannot even released the e-mails. hillary clinton cannot be the commander in chief of the united states. [applause] sen. rubio: she cannot be the commander in chief, because she lied to the families of those people who lost their lives in benghazi. she knew that was a coordinated terrorist attack.

wasnow she knew because she telling everybody that, except the families of the victims. anybody who lies to the families of those who died in the service of this country can never be the commander-in-chief of the united states of america. [applause] sen. rubio: the time has come, not just to choose in iowa but to choose in this generation. are we willing to do what needs to be done? is this generation prepared to do what those came before us did? if we fail, our children will be the first americans in history to inherit a country worse off than their parents. i am telling you this if you , caucus for me, i will be the president. this generation will do its part. if you elect me as president of the united states, we will reimburse the principles that

but he never said what it is. voters have a longer memory wasuse i river when clinton going to put through nafta and everybody said wait a second, 80% of people said no we will lose our jobs and clinton said no we will give you student loans. the student loan cuts the baby in half, students are now traded on the wall street stock exchange as slm. dollars whenwo obama got elected and it has gone up to $24.28. >> if i were to ask you a question, what is the connection between donald trump and bernie sanders that makes you torn? identifies the problem which is all the jobs sent overseas.

frustration. maybe with republican and independent and democrat, but some frustration from republicans when they feel they work really hard to get a republican majority in congress and then nothing changes. it is hard to explain we will get a republican agenda up in the united states senate that if you do not get 60 votes, you do can get toward, or you a republican agenda, get bipartisan support, and in the president vetoes it and you do not have votes to override the veto. in either instance, you still have the status quo. the public not understanding the we what the cost -- constitution requires makes it frustrating for a lot of that work hard for a lot of people not seeing a great deal of change and most of these people would say yes, i expect to follow the constitution.

independentsk for or democrats on the frustration but i think it would relate to the fact that both under republican and democrat, presidents, the middle class have not gained a lot of income. pretty much flat for the last 20 years. that is a frustration. economic think you see , number one, and nationals 30, number two, showing up in the polls as the two issues they want the campaign to deal with and the new president to deal with. ,ost: senator chuck grassley republican of iowa. and you're the chair of a committee. i want to get your reaction on what hillary said last week on meet the press. ms. clinton: i never sent or received any material mark classified. i cannot control what republicans are contending. i think it is interesting as a

broke on friday, for the first time, top-secret material had been through hillary clinton's private server and 22 of her e-mails were not released. your response? guest: let me speak to the facts. i want to divide the issue into two. it has got to be. e-mails or no e-mails here in investigation or no investigation. a third term of the obama administration. if hillary clinton is elected, that is what we will get. the reason i say that is if you look at everything she says there, every problem raised in her town meetings were raised by the press, the bottom line for solving the problems more tax, more spending, and more regulation. for the last seven years, that

attitude has strangled our economy with the slowest recession he me since world war ii. the other fact that is very and directly to where secretary clinton either does not know or she is missed leaving, that is that my investigation did not really start with hillary went in. it started in june of 2013 with letters about one of her on, she wasat was on the special program being a government employee but being a business, and we have got whistleblower information that she maybe had some conflict of interest. that is what we started investigating a long time before anyone knew about servers eating in the bathroom of the clinton home. started this investigation

before she was ever candidate for president. i am doing this investigation to defeat her. the point of the matter is my as a person involved in congressional oversight, to tv exec live branch faithfully execute the laws, is both the same under both republican president and democratic presidents. do you think hillary is in faces the prospect of being indicted based on her e-mails and the server? guest: i have to say right now, i do not know. correct,t is probably when i'm asking the fbi questions, and they say the investigation is going on, i'm may not like that answer from the f ei, but it may be it is a correct answer from the endpoint that they should not buy voles what they know right now until they get all the tax in. i have got great confidence in

nonpolitical in their investigation. in other words -- i should say apolitical in their investigation and they will do what is right. they have the reputation with the fbi to uphold. they want to enforce the law that they have taken an oath to do. and i think they want to do what is right. things i read in the paper make me believe that the law has been violated on classification of secret material. whether she will be indicted would be based upon a decision and, youdministration know, it just depends upon how much is public that the fbi can get out in the fbi probably will not make public their investigation. then you get to whether or not something will be leaked. shows she is deeply

which we all referred to as the , donald trump and hillary clinton have leads, but they are the sort of leads where no one can rest comfortably. every single person who works for either one of them had better get out or there could be an upset. you were a part of the clinton campaign eight years ago. a number of stories pointing out the sense of panic in the clinton campaign where barack obama was moving way ahead in the polls. is there a different sense in the campaign this year, despite the polls showing that its that even between bernie sanders and hillary clinton? guest: there's a tremendous difference and that's a great question. eight years ago unfortunately there was a fair amount of the nationaletween clinton campaign and the iowa clinton campaign. anytime there is dysfunction -- and it's not because anyone was trying to do the wrong thing,

but anytime there is dysfunction there's negative energy. possibly the key task is of course putting the candidate, in this case, hillary clinton in front of as many people as possible, having an organization excited,unctioning, and positive. this time we have that. first of all, and the organization could not do this without her, she's been phenomenal. she's been terrific in town halls. she's been fighting for every vote. she's just been flat out terrific this time. secondly, the national organization that was put together with the iowa organization read by matt paul and michael holly, easily the best i've ever seen in the state of iowa. it really has combined the best of the obama and clinton campaigns from 2008.

supporters get out and caucus tomorrow night and we have a victory, those will be the reasons why. and i think that could happen. host: as a former chair of the polk county iowa democrats, i want to ask you about this ,"adline from "the guardian saying that one of the big problems for each is making sure they have enough volunteers. will it be a problem tomorrow? guest: it was a problem in 2008 during the actual caucuses, because suddenly an extra 80,000 that,000 people showed up no one was expecting. if i had to guess i would say that the turnout on the democratic side this time is going to be more like in 2004 when there were eight or nine with 129,000 people

attending. that would be more in the realm of likelihood tonight. on the other hand, the republicans have never had more turnout 20,000 people for their caucuses and i have a funny feeling they could set a record tomorrow night. it's not just the volunteers who organize the caucus and get it ready to happen. it's also the ability to handle the number of people who come at you when the doors open. yout: here -- host: mentioned the poll in here are the numbers. clinton, 45%. on o'malley, 3%. it has a 4% margin of error. messageyou think sanders' has been resonating with iowa voters? into: i think there have

reasons. by the way, listen, i'm is committed to hillary clinton is any human being could be, but i have to say this about bernie sanders -- i have come to think of him as a good and decent man. and i believe that he is very well-intentioned. that's been to his benefit here in iowa. i also think that there are a fair number of angry voters on both sides and he tends to be more appealing to them because he is more -- if i can say it -- outside the mainstream, just as donald trump is on the republican side. you know, in the previous iowa poll from an seltzer, 43% of caucus going democrats in iowa described themselves as socialists and at the time, bernie was 40% in the poll and my son, connor, said that he was underperforming with socialists.

so, there is a strong left-leaning component -- that's my point -- in the iowa democratic party, just as there's a strong right-leaning component in the republican party. so, it's kind of made to order. when people are -- were pooh-poohing him years ago, i said -- listen, all he's got to do is stay upright and keep breathing because of that philosophical divide. that's exactly what we have seen play out. our conversation with earned hisord, he's law degree from the university of iowa college of law. some of therough candidates he has worked for or supported over the years, including jimmy carter, walter mondale, bill clinton, and john kerry, hillary clinton in 2008 and again in 2016.

i want to ask you one operational question with the caucuses, then we will get to the callers and listeners. for the martin o'malley supporters, polls are showing right now that he's at 3%. what is the benchmark? 15% to get delegates -- for those who don't reach it, what happens to the o'malley supporters or those who are undeclared? guest: in precincts with four delegates or more, you have to have 14% to be given a delegate. precincts, those where you elect fewer than four delegates, you have to have an incrementally higher personage. this is a very good point you raise. for your viewers not as familiar with the iowa caucuses, the systems of the two parties are

very different. on the democratic party side we elected delegates. tomorrow night the party, the results will be reported in what we call delacorte -- delicate equivalencies. on the republican side they will pass speaker ballot and the republicans will simply report out the totals. so, there are two very different systems going on. turning on your television, you will see percentages. the democratic percentages of delegates and votes passed. why has martin o'malley failed to catch fire and iowa? guest: that's a very good question. i know him quite well. we worked together on the democratic governors as

massive migration. you look at what is going on in germany. it is a total mess. they are having riots. roof.is through the everybody. have you been to brussels? it is so beautiful. everything. it is like an armed camp now. create a safe zone. we all have hearts. create a safe something rate with got to get the gulf states, who are tremendously rich, who spending mucht money, and they are not taking anybody. we are protecting them. let them fund it. we are funding everything. is $19 trillion. we get them to fund it, and we create a big safe zone in syria or a number of save zones and people stop. they have done this migration through germany. we all have hearts.

see.nk it is sad to when you see that line, that massive migration, you see so men, right?strong the first time i noticed it was early on. at first you say, it's a little unusual. it just seems to me -- and you men.at it -- young, strong we are going to take them into the country. we have already started. thousands and thousands. isis? is this a trojan horse. we are not going to take any if i am there. and anyone who comes and, sadly, i'm telling you, they will have to go back. they have to go. there is no way, jerry. i have got the top law enforcement people. i have read their statements. the top people say there is absolutely no way you can tell where these people come from. they have no papers, there is no background, no background checks

. it's like starting off with a person from zero. they have no idea. we cannot afford this as a country. we cannot afford this from an economic or perhaps, most important, from a security standpoint. we cannot do it. and you saw sheriff joe from arizona -- right? he endorsed me. and when sheriff joe endorses you, you are the strongest, i will tell you -- the whole immigration thing, how that worked out. we will have a really strong border. we will have a wall. people will come in, but they will come in legally. we got the endorsement. and sarah palin and this gentleman, one of the greats, and my boy, he is a great shooter, they go hunting together. sarah is going to be on "the today show," actually.

she will be on monday, so that is exciting. jerry: willy robinson, a great guy. to mention that. back in the late 1970's, my father was criticized because he saw a candidate who was able to pull voters from across the aisle, across the other political party, he saw a drawdate who was able to people who had never voted across ethnic lines, ronald reagan. in the was criticized because ronald reagan was a hollywood actor and he had been divorced and remarried and my father was a pastor, and jimmy carter was a sunday school teacher. a lot of folks said, how can you support -- and all you had to do was look at it. render untous said, caesar the things that are caesar's. that means be a good citizen.

you choose who is most qualified to run the country. when you have a sick child, you choose the doctor who is most qualified, not necessarily the one that shares your faith. what he told everybody. people listened. jimmy carter was a great sunday school teacher, but look how he did as president. republicans who say -- the republicans in washington have betrayed them. they make promises. they make promises on social issues, they have been doing it for decades. they never seem to come through. i think you are the first candidate since ronald reagan to bring in new voters, bringing them across the aisle, bringing -- [cheers and applause] but we have got to get the republicans who made the promises to start honoring the

promises. what are your thoughts on that? mr. trump: i spoke at liberty and it's an amazing place. what jerry and becky have done is absolutely incredible, taking over from their father. it is so beautiful and breaking the record was important. do you know who's record high broke? my record from four years ago. but you know the interesting every single candidate goes to liberty university. everybody. because it is an amazing place. it is a packed house. these are fantastic young people. i guess some people are not young, but amazing people. was such an honor for me because he sees everything, and it was such an honor for me. he looked and said one thing about me that i like better than everybody else. he said i most resemble his

polls, cnn and others did. they do the polls. i love these polls. because i am in first place. if i was not in first place, we would not be talking -- it's funny. i watch these candidates. they spend millions of dollars polling. i don't spend a lot of money. i get it from these guys. they do polls. aey say, is he a nice guy, wonderful guy, a terrible guy, is he tall, is he short? the spend all of this money on polling, jerry. candidates, hundreds of thousands of dollars in a month. what are they doing polling for? it's true. save your money. theyinteresting because did a poll, a big bowl, and on the economy i came out so much higher, triple and quadruple, like down at six and five and i met 67.

is with 15, 16, 17 people in the race. we have to bring back our jobs. by the way in the polls -- number one on security, number one isis, number one in almost every category. the only thing i was not number one on? or senility. can you believe it -- personality. can you believe it? they said i am not a nice person. i'm a nicer person than all of them. i will tell you what just happened. i read this -- it said "voter violation." ted cruz issued a statement, put it in people's houses. ." it looks like a government voter violation. it is a social thing. they are not allowed to do it. they are investigating him now. he is putting in houses "voter violation." i never heard of anything like this. it is so dishonest.

it is so dishonest. then he took an ad about me and he said i'm in favor of obamacare. my whole campaign is against obamacare. and the only way i can fight it is i have a much bigger platform than anybody else. what he does not say is that he filled out a financial disclosure form, personal financial disclosure form, and on the form -- he wants to pretend he is robin hood. he is going to protect everyone from wall street. he forgot to mention he borrowed a lot of money at almost no interest. almost nothing -- from goldman sachs and citibank. he forgot to put the to do banks on there. forgot to mention it. and of course the bigger problem is he was born in canada. people say that he cannot even be running. to me, that is a problem. candidate, itthe is possible that he can't even run, according to a lot of

people. i see so much dishonesty and politics, jerry. i have never seen anything like it. it is so dishonest. first of all, the guys in the back, the press, among the most dishonest people i have met in my life. [audience jeering] mr. trump: no, no, they are so dishonest. they will have a story, they can take something that is good and make it look bad. the great thing is -- i am talking 75% to 80%. there are 20% of them that are good. the people we are dealing with -- you are right. thank you. look at those people. back in the corner. is that beautiful? jerry, every room we go to is packed. whether is a stadium, mobile alabama, the mavericks arena in dallas, 20,000 people, 21,000 people.

oklahoma, 20,000 people twice. go, i wish you had some bigger arenas here. i have to tell you. we have capacity crowds. what i have found is people are really smart, jerry. they get it. they really get it. voters, therump trump person is most loyal. by far. when they say they want to run against you, they do not want to run against you area do you understand that? we are going to win. we had a series of egg setbacks. we should have won four years ago. how that one was lost -- we had a failed president. were not going to blame anybody. it did not work out. john mccain had a tough time. we certainly should have won four years ago. did not work.n, i backed romney, did not work. this time i said, let's do it ourselves and do it. so, really, 16 years is too long. and one thing i have to say before we get to that -- >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: you better. these are tough sounding guys. i will tell you -- really important.

we have to get right. we have to get it right. they want to move iowa to the back of the pack. you know that. -- i give you my word. i am president, i control it, you are staying right where you are. so is new hampshire. and jerry, it is such an amazing tradition. even the caucus -- it is complicated, but you really have to got to have somebody out and do this. it's such a great system. i do not know if i would want to have every state like that. but it's in amazing tradition. if i win, it is staying right where it is. they are not moving you guys to the back of the pack. just remember that. as far as a vice president is concerned, it's a very simple test. he was going to be the best president if something should

happen. that is ultimately what it is all about. that being said, you want to pick someone who can help you. you want to pick someone may be a state you have to win. there is a big story that trump is winning with hispanics -- a big story -- and i'm not surprised because i'm going to bring back jobs. it's actually a big story. i'm supposed to be doing phenomenally with people who are here illegally -- legally. ready soon we will have you legal starting to vote if we do not get tough and smart. but we want somebody who can be a great president always, but also someone who can get us to the goal so you do not have another four years of losses. and there are great people out there. greaticans have some people out there. i think we will have tremendous

success areas one of the stories written was that -- if trump wins -- first all if trump-hillary -- if she gets there. i don't know if she's going to get there with this e-mail stuff. issue she going to get there? i don't know. it will be the largest voter turnout in the history of the united states. and you know that, the debate i participated -- 24 million, 25 million people. show in thelargest history of cnn. i think if i was not an -- insulted and we went through normal channels, i think that would have been larger than the 25 million people in the first debate. i think that would have surpassed it. they said it and they said it very strongly. new yorkpt of winning

republican. thatnk we can win states aren't even thought of in the normal route and you're going to have yourself a victory, folks. and i tell you what. i am not going to disappear like the last group did. i kept thinking, where is he? why isn't he on television? doing jay leno and letterman and the shows? every night you see obama is on television, television, television. and i call in sick, he has to do jay leno. he has to do with david letterman. i don't know. they took a vacation the last month of the campaign. it's not going to happen with trump, folks. we are going to win.
