i spent eight years in the state senate here. it was a place where all of our service differences in a state as diverse as illinois, we shared a lot in common. we fought for our principles, we voted against each other, but because we assumed the best in one another and not the worse we found room for progress. we bridged differences to get rings done. through the state i saw most americans do the same. we both know issues are complicated and people with different ideas might have a point. if we just approached our politics the same way we withach our daily lives, common sense and a commitment to fairness, and a belief we are all in this together -- there is nothing we cannot do. that is why i ask in spring -- why i announced in springfield i was running for president. my faith in the goodness of the american people is affirmed

every day. i will be the first to admit the tone of politics hasn't gotten better but worse. many people feel the system is rigged and their voices don't matter. when good people of pushed away from participating in our public life, more powerful and extreme voices will fill the void. they will gain control over decisions i could send a soldier a true war or allow another economic crisis. rollback what americans have fought to secure. the good news is there's a lot we can do about this. from reducing the influence of money and our politics to change in the way we draw congestion redrawt rakes -- congressional districts, to changing the way we treat each other. of the check out my full speech at whitehouse.gov. how we can make voting easier, not harder, and modernized it for the way we live. in illinois, a law allows

citizens to register and vote at the polls on election day. it expands early voting, making it easier for working folks and busy parents. we are considering automatic voter registration when they apply for a driver's license. i'm calling for more states to adopt steps like these. when more of us vote, the less captive our politicians will be to interests and the better democracy will be for our children. nine years after i announced for the office, i believe in the politics of hope. for all the challenges in the changing world, all of the imperfections of our democracy, choosing politics of hope is something that is of to each of us. thanks, everybody. i am housee: majority whip steve scalise. i'm honored to speak to you from the lincoln room in the united states capital. right now, we're all paying less for gas than we have in

years. in some states, prices down to $.99 per gallon. for a family struggling to get by, that is needed money in their pockets. but not prolong the president obama has his way. this week in his budget the president proposed a 65 billion dollar per year tax that would raise the cost of gasoline i on average $.25 for every gallon. you will hear them call it a tax on oil, but even the white house admits this would be passed directly onto hard-working families. it gets worse. they say the tax would increase the cost of basic household goods. everything from heating oil to the food you buy at the grocery store. the bottom line is you would be taking home less so that president obama can spend more. that is why we have declared this absurd proposal dead on arrival in congress.
