and hate. yes, i am sad for the gentleman who call before me. i'm sad my country is going down like this. i am. illinois holds a primary this tuesday. kerry joins us on the republican line. >> thank you for taking my call. i'm from illinois. i lived in chicago for most of my life. getting moreis political and active. i'm ashamed of what happened. it is president obama city. i wanted to know why so much of the media we see bernie sanders over and over. at every one of his rallies people are screaming that this is a revolution. he has these huge supporters.
1:24 pm
nobody is commenting on that. they're just dumping on trump he is trying to hold the rally. he is not even allowed to speak. his supporters are not even allowed to listen to their candidate. it is very disheartening that because of trump's message is positivity for a lot of americans. is antiestablishment. paid political groups. it is our universities. it is shameful that this is what is happening in the university. this is what is coming out of it. so, i would like to see people address that in the news without bernie sanders being allowed to go out and promote a revolution. that does not mean change. that does not mean anything good. word.a volatile

back to the 1900s. and, we have to move forward. he is trying to downgrade people. trying to divide people between blacks and whites, and hispanics. we're trying to move on. obama wasnk that if to run for president again, he would win. i do not like the whole situation with the republicans. how they want to downgrade and cut. it is ridiculous. so, that is my comment. trump creates violence. i think he is a racist. a couple of tweets coming in. this one from mason. never before have i also thought that a presidential candidate would bring the u.s. to its

groups. they were organized. there are very vile. that they love america or care about america. that weetty sad though do not do that at their rallies. not that we couldn't come we just do not. they should allow us to have our rally. the police did a good job. it was my observation. i was on the main floor. and, when they announced that it was being canceled, interrupted. was youngperience black kids ran up and were instigating with everyone and anyone they could. it was pretty poor fine. i left immediately. host: if you feelike you are in danger?

deborah and north carolina on the republican line. you will the last chance to comment. to make awanted comment about the facts. i feel that americans are scared because -- they are scared of what he is talking about. really what is wrong with the country. it does not look like he is being racist when he says we need to close off the country. that could happen for a while so that we can get ourselves in check. it is not something that will last forever. our own country in control. we cannot keep bringing people into the country when our own country cannot handle what we have now. i think people are scared. i think that when it comes to republicans and democrats, they they cannotecause

control donald trump. he is paying for all his own things. not have all these political parties donated money to the cause trying to get these .ther people to be president so so, when they do become president, they have to make good on the deals they made to get them contributions. so, i think people are scared all around. i think our country is dealing with fear. host: thank you for calling. the campaign on newsmakers. our guest is tony perkins. the president of family research council. he'll join us at 10:00 a.m. and six a clock p.m. eastern time to talk about the campaign. here's a preview of the interview on the possibility of a brokered republican convention. and, if he will support donald trump.
1:38 pm
guest: consider where we are from where were a few years ago. have thehe did not entire delegate count, he had pre-much sum up the nomination. there was only one contender against him. that was rick santorum who was left in the race. he did not have the money or organization. he fought a valued flight. this is a different situation. right now, we only have 100 . actually aittle bit less. 99. ted cruz has the funds. he has the infrastructure to go the distance. >> i appreciate that. if i can follow up with this
1:39 pm
question, assuming that we get ,ast the brokered convention and donald trump is the nominee. i believe you said you had not decided whether or not you would back him. guest: i have not pondered that. i do not think that is our only option. i am working hard campaign across the country for ted cruz. helping his candidacy. i do not give blanket endorsements or those kinds of words of support. if we came to that point, it would require sitting down with donald trump and looking at his pathway. who would be vetting his nominees. who would be the running mate. who would be involved in the cabinet. what kind of policy you would advoca. i am not a lackey for the republican party. just because it is a republican candidate, i will not fall in line. it has to be somebody committed to the values we represent.

advocate not evangelicals and christians not participating, i will not back someone who would be adding to the cultural decline of our country. regardless of country. our guest on newsmakers. tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. eastern time here on c-span. and wrote to the white house coverage continues. cruz.r ted he will be at florida at the villages. time 3:00 p.m. eastern with our road to the coverage continued. live coverage of the results and speeches and events.

that evening as darkness 7:00 p.m. eastern time. that is this coming tuesday here at eastern time. now, it is highly cruise. the wife of presidential candidate ted cruz speaking at the city club of chicago discussing the presidential race in the priorities for her husband. ms. cruz: it is great to be in chicago. i had the privilege of coming to your great city many times for business. in, weght, as we drove stayed the entire time in the southern part of the state. my kids are with me and i realized they had never been to chicago before. out the window and said this looks just like houston. my seven-year-old said no, this is much bigger. giving me the opportunity to be with you and
1:42 pm
speak with you today. friends and colleagues from the business world here. i would think david and jenny for coming. i've a friend from california. my friend steve. he is here. when ted and i embarked on this journey. a year ago, we cut the big thing and our family would be telling our girls that the dad would run for president and that we would have to describe what that meant for them. used tod, my girls are be going to the office every day. the main question was, what you do few will not go for it goldman sachs? had to explain to them that doing something. in yourself was worth taking a leave of absence. one of the first questions they had was is it paid? so, i had to describe to them that my role would be unpaid. it will be for the country to help dad wing.
1:43 pm
position of the country something you do for others. there are so many kids who need a better school and a better chance. i seven-year-old said you know what, if it was so great, there are be more first men. i want to to know. i'm still trying to prove to the girls that this is a worthy role to be a spouse in this campaign. we have been traveling the country for a year. you know that feeling when you are in a place and get the feeling. we had a small town. we had never been here before. i say guys, we have been here before. the restaurant was in the same place. the pool outside was at the exact same angle. we're just another hampton in. if you want a truly consistent experience, please, standing hampton in.
1:44 pm
most inspiring thing was when you have an opportunity to take yourself out of your own daily and go make some people across this country in rapid fashion. most was struck me the that democracy is about individuals. great if the process was shorter. if we do not spend two years and so much money, we could save a third world country in the money spent on a political race. as you go through it, you realize there is a goodness to what american people put a family through. they are evaluating policy and what you do for the country, but what kind of a person are you? look kind of character do you have? this is one person one vote. it is an individual exercise. the opportunity to meet people
1:45 pm
is tremendous. our party does not elect people without individual representation. every single person having the chance to meet you and know who you are. you are all leaders in your community and your profession. illinois, eat state of abraham lincoln, the first republican printed it -- president and the man who preserved the nation. i'm honored that you would take the time to abuse me to hear about the campaign and ted. i hope that i can provide insight and energy as we campaign here in these few critical days. i cannot underscore the importance of tuesday. have been steadily building delegate vot. last night, we did very well. my seven-year-old stayed up to watch the return.
1:46 pm
we won idaho. it ise a total count now closing in on the front runner. that is important. it is an accumulation of momentum. i want to tell you about ted's election in texas. there are some similar qualities to this race. i want to get into some of the key things he is running on and when i ted cruz it ministration uld look like. you all know how the campaign is going. you probably keep track of the numbers. now, people are starting to look at a narrow field and they want to know what you would actually do. when ted was first elected in 2012,e really overcame tremendous odds in the primary. in my private time, i raise money, this was an impossible race to win. take away the leave of absence. he was at 2% in the poll. he had less than that and the name id.
1:47 pm
so, of course, as his wife, i had to remind him that he might have a negative id. i watch that campaign. i was very active on the weekend. he had a full-time job. when ted ended up wenning that there a runoff in a victory, and last tuesday, he won texas by 17 point margin. [applause] cruz: it ss the message that ted is doing something different. he is the cause of shaking things up. isis not a profession that comfortable and easy. it is a job and your clients are voters. you are working for them and action tryinto solve real problems. how much of us would be employed if every time we came back to the boss explained about how difficulty problems are that we faced. you're after year, we make excuses and do not get things done. voters in texas were ready for a change.
1:48 pm
because ted has been delivering on that change, there is more work to do. they sent a message to the nation last tuesday. they know he is somebody who will fight for them. he will say no further. he is somebody who will actually work to do the things. he will put in a better system that is affordable and portable. it will reduce the debt and deficit. they will not to say i have a plan to talk about it, the senate leadership on the republican side tryi to change billules to allow the debt to come to the floor more quickly so that they could come up quickly. we have the same thing that voters get. ted is doing exactly what he was elected to do. so, what would he do when elected president? key things.ree i will broadly described them. the three things are security,
1:49 pm
growth, and liberty. so many times, i am on the campaign trail and 70 people say i love ted cruz, he is a little too far right or little extreme. i hear that less today. these are common sense american principles. and liberty.wth, we all have our individual viewpoints. ted cruz understands the things that unite us. he understands the limits of power. so, i'll try to give your sense of what he would do. first and foremost, is number one priority would be to keep the country safe. i think we all felt less safe in the last year. my brother lives at one mile from san bernardino. this was something that happened abroad in paris. then, it was a mile from her brother's i know you guys have a lot of first-hand experience with the boston marathon. we all feel less safe. ted cruz omit that his number
1:50 pm
one priority. to rebuild the military and keep it strong. support our men and women by providing them with equipment and training to succeed. we need to put american and national security interests first. we need to defend our people first. no more nationbuilding. there are some problem. it'll be wonderful to solve them. when you go to iowa and look and 18 euros in the eye and they say i do not know who ronald reagan was, i know that i have been at war for several years. i lost my best friend. i come home and there is not a job. this is a tragedy. for this next generation. in my life, prior to this campaign, i do not have the chance to meet a lot of people. my girls are five years old and seven years old. we get people out of college university. when you meet teenagers who going to war in serving the reminds thatit
1:51 pm
these are real lives at stake. we need to put national interests first. we need to use the pulpit of peace for strength so that we go to war less often. when, and if we go, we go to defeat our enemies. we go to protect our people and help them come home. there'll be no more leading from behind. [applause] ms. cruz: there will simply be leadership and defending the american people. growth. the second thing ted will do it dramatical reduce our taxes and regulations through a simple flat taxes. so the very heart and soul of our economy can once again florist to create more jobs and opportunities. we know there are not enough jobs. people come out of college and not good enough job offers. like we were when we are graduating. in theirmany people
1:52 pm
40's and 50's who were laid off in the recession have never gotten back on their feet. these are real problems. ted cruz will fully repeal obamacare and replace it with a it personal,es portable, and affordable. it will prevent government bureaucrats from getting in between patients and their doctor. too long, republicans have promised to shrink the size of our federal government. to growgo to washington government more. you know, our founding fathers, the government we have today has no resemblance to anything that they envisioned. the irs, many of you know that the irs has only been in existence for 50 years. these are new things. these are new things that have continued to grow. gone are the days of simply just putting on a sticker saying republicans grow government list.
1:53 pm
ted will shrink the size of government. not just grow it less. power needs to return to the states. to the american people. third, liberty. ted will protect our liberties. nobody on the stage has his record of doing so. standing before the supreme court in winning over and over on such an orchid issues as religious liberty. freedom is each. our right to keep and bear arms. and the sovereignty of the united states against the world court. fighting against unlawful government's spine to protect the amendments. stage has the discernment, ability, and fierce determination to appoint a strict constitutionalist to the u.s. supreme court who has a proven record of faithfully defending the constitution and the bill of rights. says sony times, republicans
1:54 pm
appoint people who they believed to be good. they found people who had a good enough record that they could pass. ted will spend real political capital to find people who have a real constitutional record. not somebody to reflect his viewpoint, but to stand up to the law. -- for the law. [applause] ms. cruz: you know, i will tightly quick story. the first time i went to hear his supreme court argument, he was studying for three weeks. he only gets about 10 hours a week -- 10 hours of sleep per week. he was well prepared. he went running up the steps. i asked him for a moment, are you nervous at all? he said no. i just hope they understand my argument. i love that about him. the other night, we're watching the returns. he adjust line from idaho. he went straight to bed. race arein the
1:55 pm
exhausted. i came running up from the treadmill. i was watching the return. i said how are we doing? i love this guy. he is so confident. he knows what he is doing. he is an optimist for the country. understand that there is a well placed anger in the american people and our electorate. i'm glad that we are standing up and expressing that anger at a political class that has been out of touch for far too long. we need somebody will take on career politicians. need to elect somebody who has stuck their neck out and will to do whatrity people elected him to do. he calls it like it is and will tell the american people inside the beltway. that is exactly what ted has been doing. we go around and see some new people. you will realize why the election is what it is.
1:56 pm
is because people are fed up. we need to address the anger. we can do that in a positive way. it appeals for better self as americans. not to our fears and things that divide us. i am happy to go into a little bit more of what ted will do. i might just outline what he will do one day one. we can expand on that and take some questions later. is so important that we elect somebody who understands how quickly things can change for the better. remember, when ronald reagan was elected, the day he was in office, our hostages were free. growth under him. we can change things quickly. willy number one, ted cruz resend every one of obama's illegal orders. so much in this administration,
1:57 pm
because of how things have turned out, have a congress that has not acted. a do-nothing congress. even though republicans are in the majority, the selection is not about party. it is about who will get things done. we have had ao-nothing congress. we also had a president vetoes a lot of things. he has an acted a lot of things through executive orders. many things that legal minds know are illegal. will reshape the department of justice to investigate planned parenthood. private sector organization. he will and the political persecution and work that the irs has been doing on specific activist groups. a ted cruz administration will not allow that. he will dispense with this catastrophic deal with iran. 80% of the american people were against negotiating with them.
1:58 pm
ted asked secretary john kerry to please bring that negotiation to the u.s. congress so that those collected by you could look at this before went anywhere. instead, they went to the united nations. this is wrong. this is not how we are meant to work. ted also has been an incredible fighter for the jewish people. story ofn is that the our country of religious freedom come of having our own land. ted will move the embassy in israel to jerusalem on day number one. there is a lot more that can be said about each of these policies. i think that maybe i should answer some of the details. i do want to mention a couple things on security. immigration has become an enormous issue. ted will secure our borders. ronald reagan promised to secure the border in the 80's. a number -- the government never got around to do that.
1:59 pm
to allow people to come into the country without knowing who they are. we need to streamline legal immigration. ted cruz reminds people. here my people all the time. wereuld not be here if it not for illegal immigration. we are a nation of immigrants. it is important that we celebrate that. we must do so in a way that allows us to know who is here and let's people come in three fair process and that we do put american jobs first. we need to support our children. [applause] i'm thinking if you read the wall street journal. in early february, there was a great article about immigration. done ate of arizona has tremendous job of clamping down on illegal immigration. the results have been tremendous. minimum wage has gone up.
2:00 pm
people have had to innovate a little bit. we have been hiring a lot of unemployed people. some costs have gone up for business. it is a way that is actually supporting working-class people. there are a lot of examples of what we can do for immigration. another area that deserves some details is his tax plan. he is talking about having a 10% tax plan for individuals. all the deductions and depreciation schedules, [applause] those are some of the things that a cruz administration would do good security, growth and liberty. with that, i will take the off script to answer some questions. we've had an incredible leadership team in illinois. to tell you two things about our campaign could we build a ground game in 2015 that this country has never seen since ronald reagan.
