and the reason that we are generating this enthusiasm is explosion of technology, before because we are doing something the cell phones and the space very unusual in contemporary age technology, before the global economy, it was possible american politics. in america for one breadwinner we are telling the truth. to earn enough money to take [cheers and applause] care of the entire family. one breadwinner could earn now, the truth is as every enough money to take care of the person here knows whether it is entire family. then, you got the whole global in our own personal lives or in our broad national political alwaysruth is not economy, all of the technology and you know what happens? pleasant. today, mom and dad are working, it is not always something you are happy to hear. the kids are working and they as human go forward have less disposable income than beings, if we go forward as a one breadwinner family had 40 nation, we cannot sweep the hard years ago. something is wrong with our realities of our lives economy. [applause] underneath the rug. we got to bring it out, we have to do with it. -- deal with it. in america today, in firman, west virginia, you have people

and unfortunately, working not one job, they are unfortunately, media in this working two jobs, three jobs. country for a variety of you have people working longer reasons, largely because they hours for lower wages. are owned a major corporations we are going to create an cases.deal in most economy that protects the needs there are great exceptions but of our workers, our children, they do not deal with the our seniors, our veterans. reality -- realities of our lives in a way that we need to all of the people of this be discussing. country and not just the 1%. [applause] [applause] you a fewt give examples of what i mean and what does that mean? hard thing tod thing ta our thio making it really relevant to life here in west virginia. i have been all over this country and the things that i do? it is not. have seen are incredibly heartbreaking. in america, if you work 40 hours i went to flint, michigan where a week, you should not be living children are being poisoned by in poverty. lead in the water that they are we will raise the minimum wage drinking. to $15 an hour. [booing] [applause] i have been to detroit, michigan mean millionsll where their public school system

is on the verge of a fiscal collapse. of people will be able to support their families with the kind of dignity and security [booing] i have been to baltimore, maryland where tens of thousands that they do not have today. of people are addicted to [applause] heroin. [audience boos] second, when we talk about equitable wages, we wil ll end i know that addiction is a problem here and we will get to bsurdity of women making that in a second. the point is -- never forget it -- we are the wealthiest country $.79 on the dollar compared to men. [applause] joinw every man here will with the women in the fight for in the history of the world. pay equity. but, most people in our country do not know that because almost all of the new income and wealth [applause] is going to the top 1%. ratesnemployment throughout this country are extremely high, especially in [audience booing] areas,nd rural we are the wealthiest country in the history of the world and that means that public school

systems should not be collapsing. youth unemployment in this and when people are not making country should not be 30%, 40% enough income to support their or 50%. toilies, it is a no-brainer our infrastructure should not be disintegrating. suggest we need a program to put our people back to work. [cheers and applause] [applause] west virginia we as a people have got to ask and all over this country, our infrastructure, our roads, some very hard questions and bridges, water systems, then have the guts to take on wastewater plants, rail systems, some very powerful people. levies and dams are in massive disrepair. you know, a great nation is not we can create 13 million jobs with a $1 trillion investment. judged by the number of [applause] well, people say, yeah, that is billionaires it has or the number of nuclear weapons it a nice idea. has. our infrastructure is crumbling, it is judged by how it treats but how will you pay for it? the weakest and most vulnerable i will tell you. amongst us. right now, we have a corrupt

federal tax system that allows [cheers and applause] major corporations, major corporations who make millions it is not acceptable to me that of dollars a year in profits to in america we have the highest stash their profits in the rate of childhood poverty of cayman islands, bermuda and almost any major country on other tax havens. we are going to end that tax earth. that is not the way we should be treating the young people of loophole. this country. $100 billion a year we invest into the infrastructure. [cheers and applause] [applause] right here in west virginia, your beautiful state, 100,000 when we talk about the economy, children in this great state we have got to talk about something that media almost never talks about. live in poverty. anis not a sexy issue, but over 24% of the total number of enormously important issue and kids right here in west that is our disastrous trade virginia. policy. [audience boos] tell the young

when we talk about employment, "officially" unemployment in people something they may not america is supposed to be 5%, know. that is there was actually once a time, not so many years ago, but you know that is not the case. when you can go to a department real unemployment is much higher uy products than that. [applause] in fact, right here in west manufactured in the united virginia, this state has the states of america. [applause] trade policies lowest labor force participation rate in the country. like nafta and trade relations with china, policies written by corporate america, what happened is companies shut down plants in vermont, west in fact, only 54% of the working virginia, all over the country. age population in this state has a job. when we talk about the grotesque they said why what i want to pay somebody $15, $20 an hour when i level -- i talk about this a lot -- when i talk about the can go to china or mexico and grotesque levels of income and pay people pennies? wealth inequality, west virginia that is what they did. is almost at the top of that lostresult, we have list. millions of decent paying jobs.

millions. one of the big differences between secretary clinton and myself -- she supported virtually every one of these disastrous trade agreements. again, again, this is a national i have opposed them all. problem. believe me, it exists in my state of vermont. our message to corporate america this is an issue we have to deal with in every state of this is you want us to buy the country. listen to this -- from 1979 to products you make? 2012, the top 1% of the people make these damn products here in west virginia and america. [applause] in west virginia saw their income go up by more than 60% on average, while the bottom 90% saw their income go down. [audience boos] this campaign is going to win go down by 4/10 of 1%. because we are listening to that is what we are seeing all over america. voices are not we have an economy today that is often heard. doing really, really great if one of the groups of people that you are in the top 1%. i have been very proud to listen

if you are in the bottom 90%, to all over this country is young people. the likelihood is you are [applause] working longer hours for lower wages, if you are lucky enough to have a job. it is a funny thing. [applause] when we began this campaign, the general attitude of the pundittrry was that young people i want everybody here to know this is not just -- i'm using are not interested in government, politics. west virginia statistics tonight because i'm here -- this is a they are too busy with their video games or whatever else national issue and that is why they do. together we are going to create well, it turns out that the an economy that works for all of young people of this country are a lot smarter than many of the our people, not just the people pundits thought. on top. [applause] [cheers and applause] it turns out that the young a couple of years ago, i was people understand they are the chairman of the subcommittee in future of this country and they the senate. want to help shape that future. we did a hearing on poverty as a [applause] death sentence. you know what i mean by that?

young people understand that there is something profoundly wrong when in this country this is what i mean by that. when you hear about people being poor, people say that is too today, the young generation may bad. be the first generation in the they don't have a good car, their housing is not good. then don't have enough money to go out and eat. modern history of america to being poor is much more than that. have a lower standard of living what being poor is about in than their parents. america is you die at a significantly lower age than [booing] that is right. my father came to this country at the age of 17 with no money. people who have money. he worked hard and my mom worked hard. kids would was their be financially better off than [audience boos] they were. that is called the american mcdowell county in west virginia is one of the poorest counties dream that millions of american in the united states of america. families have experienced. parents work hard so their kids can do better than they. the united states of america being the richest country in the [applause] history of the world. in mcdowell county, 77% of the

children under 18 are living in and together, together, that poverty in the united states of american dream, that american america. [audience boos] dream we will not allow to die. [applause] in mcdowell county, men can only expect to live until the age of 63. now, i want you to think about there is another issue that this. again, being poor means not just young people all over the country talk to me about. that you have the big flat they say we did what our parents screen tv or the fancy car, it told us to do, what our teachers means you are dying at a significantly lower age. told us to do and that is go out and get the best education that if you drive six miles north we can. from this county, you are going because we all understand that learning and education is to fairfax county, virginia. inherent in who we are as human in fairfax county, men live on beings and that also for our average until the age of 82 years of age. country to do well in the future, we need the best educated workforce in the world.

[applause] 18 years more than men live in mcdowell county. millions of young people did the [audience boos] right thing. they went to college, but then what happened is they left the average life expectancy for a woman in fairfax county is 85. 50 thousand00, in mcdowell county, it is 73 years of age. 0, $70,000 in debt. it's not just mcdowell county. we have counties like them. i have talked to people who are all over the country. these are issues of inequality paying off that debt for that as a nation we have got to decades. they can't afford to buy a car,a kidsse, get married, have address. because they are paying off that debt. what crime did they commit for [cheers and applause] getting an education? that is nuts. you know, one of the issues that [applause] i talk about a whole lot and is directly related to poverty, to

unemployment is the fact that we all of you know that 40 or 50 have a broken criminal justice system. years ago, if you had a high [applause] school degree, the likelihood again, what this campaign is was you were able to go out and get a halfway decent job and asking all of you is to think make it into the middle class, outside of the box. with a high school degree. the world has changed, the economy has changed, technology has changed. think outside of the status quo. people today need more education think beyond the options that corporate television allow you than they did 50 years ago. to choose. [applause] -- to envisage. thinking outside of the box, [applause] think about why people in outside of the status quo leads mcdowell county die at a significantly lower age than you to a very simple conclusion. people in wealthier communities. think about why it is in city 50 years ago, it was great we after city in america, we have had free public education from first grade to 12th grade, but the world has changed. youth unemployment levels of 40%, 50%, 60% and that relates when we talk about public

education today, it must mean making public colleges and to an international universities tuition-free. embarrassment that we have more [applause] people in jail than any other country on earth. [audience boos] think for a moment, there are people who have attacked me on this. this is the united states of it is a radical idea. america. we should have the best educated this is not a radical idea. people in the world. [cheers and applause] it exists in countries like germany already and scandinavia. our people should have decent they understand that investing paying jobs, not rotting in in their young people is jail. investing in the future of their country. [cheers and applause] [applause] this campaign is going to win by the way, you may not know because we are doing something unusual. this, but 50 years ago in the we are talking to the american people and not just a wealthy united states of america, our campaign contributors. major, great public colleges and

universities were virtually tuition-free. if we could have virtually free [cheers and applause] tuition 50 years ago, we damn when i talk about unpleasant truths that all of us have to well can do it today. address, truth number one is that we have a corrupt campaign [applause] finance system which is undermining american democracy. once again, this proposal which [cheers and applause] think outside of the box. also includes dealing with the what does democracy mean? crisis of student debt today, because we have millions of it is not a complicated concept. people dealing with student it means you have a vote, you debt, our proposal will allow have a vote, you have a vote. majority wins. democracy does that mean the people with student debt koch brothers and a few other to refinance their loans at the lowest interest rate they can billionaires can spend hundreds find. of millions of dollars to buy [applause] elections. curiosity, how many

people are carrying student debt [cheers and applause] right now? we are going to lower that that is not democracy, my student debt. [applause] friends. that is called now, my critics say, hey, bern oligarchy. if we do not turn things around, ie, you are nice guy giving out free tuition. we will increasingly see an you will lower student debt. economy and a government run by a handful of billionaires and together we where are you going to get the will not allow that to happen. money? here is the point. i want you to think outside of the box. [cheers and applause] this is not the dynamic that the media provides. you have to think through this stuff and you can. eight, nine years ago as a result of the greed, but, it is not just a corrupt recklessness and illegal campaign finance system that we behavior on wall street, the are going to have to address, it is a rigged economy. congress bailed out the big banks. [booing] this is what a rigged economy apparently, there was plenty of money available to bail out means. it means today -- listen to this large banks who were too big to

fail. -- the top 1/10 of 1%, not 1%, whenieve that right now wall street is doing quite well, now owns almost as much wealth thank you, we should impose a as the bottom 90%. tax on wall street speculation. [cheers and applause] [applause] [audience boos] that tax alone, that one tax in america today, the wealthiest 20 people own more wealth than alone will bring in more than the bottom half of america. enough money to substantially 150 million people. in america today, one family, the walton family of walmart, lower student debt and make public colleges and universities tuition-free in ithis one family owns more wealth than the bottom 40% of the american country. people. [applause] now, wall street may not like it, but you know what? [cheers and applause] i could care less what wall street likes. [applause] [audience boos] you know what i say? i say enough is enough. and, by the way, when we make [applause] but, it is not only an unfair distribution of wealth. it is income as well.

i want to say this to the young public colleges and universities people who may not believe me. tuition-free, we do something that is really revolutionary. i want you to think about this. i want you to google it after you get out of here, not now. right now in my state and right here in west virginia, you have here is the facts. a lot of kids who are growing up 40 years ago before the poor, whose parents never went to college and these kids can explosion of technology, before the cell phones and the space age technology, before the ever imagine they will go to college. global economy, it was possible if we can make it clear to the in america for one breadwinner parents and the teachers and the children that any kid in this country who studies hard, who to earn enough money to take does his or her schoolwork w care of the entire family. one breadwinner could earn ell, those kids will be able to get a higher education. [applause] enough money to take care of the entire family. then, you got the whole global economy, all of the technology and you know what happens? that is revolutionary. today, mom and dad are working, the kids are working and they have less disposable income than now, i want to touch on an issue one breadwinner family had 40 that i know is controversial years ago. here in west virginia, but it is something is wrong with our economy.

an issue that i deal with all over the country and i'm not [applause] going to tell you anything different than i say in vermont or california. a member of the in america today, in firman, west virginia, you have people working not one job, they are u.s. senate committee on the working two jobs, three jobs. environment, i have talked to you have people working longer hours for lower wages. scientists all over this country and all of the world. we are going to create an what the scientists tell us almost unanimously is that economy that protects the needs climate change is real. of our workers, our children, [applause] our seniors, our veterans. all of the people of this country and not just the 1%. climate change is caused by human activity. [cheers and applause] [applause] alreadyate change is causing devastating problems in what does that mean? is that a hard thing to our country and around the do? it is not. world.

lamy me give you an example of what we have to do. in america, if you work 40 hours here's what the scientists also a week, you should not be living in poverty. we will raise the minimum wage tell us, and this is scary to $15 an hour. stuff. they say if we do not get our act together and transform our [cheers and applause] energy system away from fossil $15 an hour will mean millions fuels, then what we will be of people will be able to support their families with the kind of dignity and security seeing in years to come is more drought, more flooding, more that they do not have today. extreme weather disturbances, [cheers and applause] more acidification of the ocean, more rising sea levels, and more second, when we talk about equitable wages, we will end international conflict as people the absurdity of women making fight over limited natural $.79 on the dollar compared to resources. men. [applause] [cheers and applause] me that to address this issue, we have to do two things. i know every man here will join number one, we have a moral with the women in the fight for pay equity. obligation to our kids and [cheers and applause] future generations to make

certain that we leave this planet in a way that is when unemployment rates healthy and habitable. throughout this country are [applause] extremely high, especially in urban and rural areas, and when people are not making but, second of all, we have a enough income to support their moral obligation to to protect families, it is a no-brainer to suggest we need a program to put those workers in the fossil fuel our people back to work. industry. [applause] [cheers and applause] we cannot leave those people in the coal industry, in the oil in vermont and west virginia and all over this country, our industry, in the gas industry infrastructure, our roads, bridges, water systems, high and dry. we cannot do that. wastewater plants, rail systems, [applause] levies and dams are in massive that is why we have a moral disrepair. obligation to make certain that we can create 13 million jobs those people who may lose their with a $1 trillion investment. jobs get new jobs. [applause] [cheers and applause]

education and all of the benefits that they deserve. well, people say, yeah, that is a nice idea. our infrastructure is crumbling, but how will you pay for it? [applause] i will tell you. when we think outside of the right now, we have a corrupt federal tax system that allows box, we have to ask ourselves major corporations, major some simple questions. corporations who make millions how does it happened that every major country on earth of dollars a year in profits to stash their profits in the guarantees health care to all of cayman islands, bermuda and their people except the united other tax havens. states? [booing] we are going to end that tax i'm a member of the committee loophole. that helped write the affordable care act. $100 billion a year we invest it has done a lot of good things, but today, 29 million into the infrastructure. people have no health insurance still. we create the jobs that we need. many of you are underinsured with high copayments and high [cheers and applause] deductibles. and, the drug companies rip us when we talk about the economy, we have got to talk about someing that media almost all off by charging us higher never talks about. it is not a sexy issue, but an

[cheers and applause] that means you will not have to stay on your job if you do not like your job just because you as a result of trade policies like nafta and trade relations have health care on that job. with china, policies written [applause] by corporate america, what about going to the doctor happened is companies shut down when you are sick, not having to plants in vermont, west virginia, all over the country. worry about a copayment or a they said why what i want to pay deductible. [applause] i know that it is a serious our message to corporate america is you want us to buy the crisis here, but trust me, it is products you make? a serious crisis in my state as make these damn products here in well. the issue of how we deal with west virginia and america. [cheers and applause] it seems to me to reach the conclusion that we have got to deal with substance abuse and addiction as a health issue, not a criminal issue. [applause] this campaign is going to win

because we are listening to people whose voices are not what does that mean? often heard. what it means, again, think one of the groups of people that outside of the box, what it i have been very proud to listen means is we have got to to all over this country is young people. revolutionize mental health treatment in america. [applause] [cheers and applause] it is a funny thing. when we began this campaign, the we have got to provide treatment general attitude of the it, note when they need punditry was that young people are not interested in six months from now. [applause] government, politics. they are too busy with their video games or whatever else they do. well, it turns out that the young people of this country are on another issue relating to a lot smarter than many of the drugs, one of the problems with pundits thought. our criminal justice system is that over the last 30 years, millions of people have received [cheers and applause] criminal records because of possession of marijuana. it turns out that the young

people understand they are the future of this country and they if you have a criminal record want to help shape that future. and you are a kid, it is hard to [cheers and applause] go out and get a job. we have to rethink the so-called war on drugs. [applause] young people understand that there is something profoundly right now under the federal wrong when in this country controlled substance act, today, the young generation may be the first generation in the marijuana is listed as a modern history of america to schedule one drug next to have a lower standard of living heroin. [booing] than their parents. uses scientists argue the pl [audience boos] and minuses of marijuana but marijuana is not heroin which is that is right. my father came to this country a killer drug. at the age of 17 with no money. [applause] he worked hard and my mom worked hard. their dream was their kids would be financially better off than i have legislation they were. in that will take marijuana out that is called the american dream that millions of american

of the federal controlled families have experienced. substance act. [applause] parents work hard so their kids can do better than they. legalizing marijuana is a state [cheers and applause] issue. it should not be a federal crime. and together, together, that [applause] american dream, that american knows a profound dream we will not allow to die. lesson of american history and that is that real change never [cheers and applause] takes place from the top on down . it always takes place from the bottom up. [applause] there is another issue that young people all over the country talk to me about. they say we did what our parents 100 years ago when workers in told us to do, what our teachers told us to do and that is go out west virginia and all over this country were forced to work and get the best education that seven days a week, 12 hours a day, kids working in the mines we can.

and the factories, working because we all understand that learning and education is inherent in who we are as human people came together to form beings and that also for our trade unions so they can have some dignity on the job. country to do well in the [applause] future, we need the best educated workforce in the world. that is what happens when people come together. [cheers and applause] country, ago in this millions of young people did the the kids do not know this, women right thing. did not have the right to vote. they went to college, but then what happened is they left did not have the right to get the a education or jobs they wanted less than 100 years ago. [booing] school $30,000, $50,000, $70,000 what happened? in debt. women stood up. [cheering] and i have talked to people who are paying off that debt for back and with their decades. male allies they said, in they can't afford to buy a car, a america, women will not be a house, get married, have kids second-class citizens. because they are paying off that [applause] debt.

what crime did they commit for getting an education? hundreds of years ago, the that is nuts. abomination of slavery. [cheers and applause] african-americans and their allies had a different vision for america. some of them went to jail, some of them died, but they said in america, we will end racism, all of you know that 40 or 50 years ago, if you had a high segregation. school degree, the likelihood was you were able to go out and [applause] get a halfway decent job and make it into the middle class, with a high school degree. the world has changed, the economy has changed, technology has changed. people today need more education than they did 50 years ago. [cheers and applause] but, because the gay community and their straight allies were prepared to take on bigotry and hatred, we succeeded in making think for a moment, there are people who have attacked me on gay marriage legal. this. [applause] it is a radical idea. this is not a radical idea. it exists in countries like if we were here five years ago, germany already and scandinavia. they understand that investing in their young people is somebody jumps up and says a $7.25 federal wage is investing in the future of their country. a starvation wage. we have to raise that wage to $15 an hour. by the way, you may not know the person next to her would this, but 50 years ago in the have said $15 an hour? united states of america, our you want to more than double the minimum wage? you are nuts. major, great public colleges and it cannot happen. universities were virtually maybe eight dollars, nine tuition-free. dollars -- $15 is too high. if we could have virtually free workers in the fast food industry, in mcdonald's, burger tuition 50 years ago, we damn king, wendy's, went out on well can do it today. strike. [applause] [cheers and applause] up and a phofought back. once again, this proposal which two years ago, in seattle, los angeles, san francisco -- $15 an also includes dealing with the hour minimum wage. [applause] in california, new crisis of student debt today, york state -- $15 an hour because we have millions of minimum wage. people dealing with student debt, our proposal will allow [applause] people with student debt to refinance their loans at the

lowest interest rate they can find. >> ideas today that seem so radical, raising the minimum wage, making public colleges and [cheers and applause] universities tuition free, just out of curiosity, how many people are carrying student debt providing health care for all right now? people as a right, having paid we are going to lower that student debt. family and medical leave -- [applause] [laughter] ending a corrupt campaign finance system. now, my critics say, hey, bern [applause] ie, you are nice guy giving out free tuition. you will lower student debt. crisis of climate where are you going to get the change, making sure women are money? here is the point. paid equal pay for equal work. i want you to think outside of the box. this is not the dynamic that the media provides. you have to think through this making sure our kids have jobs, stuff and you can. eight, nine years ago as a ls. jail sales -- cel result of the greed, recklessness and illegal [applause]

[applause] now, wall street may not like it, but you know what? trumps oftain donald i could care less what wall the world don't divide us up. street likes.

[applause] [cheers and applause] and, by the way, when we make public colleges and universities tuition-free, we do something that is really revolutionary. i want you to think about this. understanding when we stand right now in my state and right here in west virginia, you have ,ogether, there is nothing a lot of kids who are growing up poor, whose parents never went nothing that we cannot to college and these kids can accomplish. ever imagine they will go to college. if we can make it clear to the parents and the teachers and the [applause] children that any kid in this country who studies hard, who does his or her schoolwork w on may 10, there is going to be a very important primary here in kids will be able west virginia. to what we have learned in this campaign is when there are large get a higher education. voter turnouts, we win. [cheers and applause] when there are low turnouts, we

that is revolutionary. lose. [applause] hope that on may 10, west now, i want to touch on an issue virginia will have the largest that i know is controversial voter turnout in the history of here in west virginia, but it is the state. an issue that i deal with all over the country and i'm not [applause] going to tell you anything different than i say in vermont or california. that is that as a member of the much west virginia u.s. senate committee on the environment, i have talked to scientists all over this country will join the political and all of the world. revolution. what the scientists tell us thank you all. [cheers and applause] and climate change is already causing devastating problems in our country and around the world. here's what the scientists also tell us, and this is scary stuff. they say if we do not get our act together and transform our energy system away from fossil fuels, then what we will be seeing in years to come is more drought, more flooding, more extreme weather disturbances, more acidification of the ocean, more rising sea levels, and more international conflict as people fight over limited natural resources. this issue, we have to do two things. number one, we have a moral obligation to our kids and future generations to make certain that we leave this planet in a way that is healthy and habitable. >> you are watching election night coverage. it is too close. we begin with rhode island. senator bernie sanders with 10% of the vote now and. to 40%of 57.4% compared for hillary clinton. [applause] 90% of the vote has to be reported in the state of rhode island. in connecticut, senator sanders when we think outside of the box, we have to ask ourselves holding onto a narrow lead with some simple questions. 50.4% of the vote compared to how does it happened that every major country on earth guarantees health care to all of 47% for hillary clinton. another state declared the winner, she has won the delaware democratic primary. 60% of the vote. and the winner in maryland and pennsylvania. the maryland results are slow their people except the united states? because of baltimore and [booing] i'm a member of the committee pennsylvania. that helped write the affordable care act. 58.3%. clinton at it has done a lot of good things, but today, 29 million people have no health insurance still. many of you are underinsured

with high copayments and high let's look at their public deductibles. result. it is a clean sweep for donald and, the drug companies rip us trump. he has won all five primaries. all off by charging us higher prices than they are. beginning with rhode island, connecticut, delaware, pennsylvania and maryland. [applause] you see the results on your screen. 60% of the vote in connecticut. the voting is still going on and maryland. that is why i believe we need to move toward a medicare for all, they stay the governor kasich was hoping to compete in, 61% of single-payer. the vote. it comes down to delegates. connecticut. you go pennsylvania, delaware. and every one of them was conclusive. and every state is so different. i mean, i think one of the greats, when you look at 50% in massachusetts and almost 50% in alabama. ♪ now, that is pretty different. but all across the board. i think we are going to do well in washington state. i think we will do amazingly well in oregon. and every place we are going to. i mean, we are going to be fighting hard. new mexico, we will be fighting really hard. and i think governor kasich and senator cruz have really hurt themselves with a faulty deal that was defaulted on before the even started. because kasich said, what do you mean, aren't they going to vote for me in indiana? well, i said i thought they just made that deal. politicians, all talk, no action, they can't get it done, and they certainly can't straighten out our country. because we are going to bring

back jobs, take care of our military, so many things. [applause] to me, especially over the last two weeks -- i have traveled new york state, i went to syracuse, poughkeepsie, rome, new york our rome. there is another roman out there someplace. we went to rome, new york. we went to the island, bethpage -- every place we went -- manufacturing down 40% and even more. and then, we go to pennsylvania and we see the same thing. you look at what is happening with steel and other industries. i get statisticians to give me numbers. and before i leave, give me the numbers. and every single place i go is a disaster. manufacturing down 40-45-60% sometimes in a relatively short time. our jobs are being sucked away

[applause] last, especially over the 2 weeks -- i have traveled new york state, i went to poughkeepsie, rome, new york our rome. there is another roman out there someplace. -- rome out there someplace. we went to the island, bethpage -- every place we went -- manufacturing down 40% and even more. we go to pennsylvania and we see the same thing. you look at what is happening

with steel and other industries. i get statisticians to give me numbers. before i leave, give me the numbers. every single place ig o is a disaster. 5%ufacturing down 40-45-60 sometimes in a relatively short time. our jobs are being sucked away from our country and we aren't going to let it happen anymore. you are going to make it difficult to do that. when companies want to leave this country, our great country, and want to lay off all these people that have helped build the country, there will be consequences for the company to pay. when they think they will make their product and send it in, no taxes through a week border, which will be -- weak border, which will be very strong by the way. remember that i said it. [applause] when i think we are going to send their product through this weak quarter and pay no tax and

have no consequences for what they did, it's not going to happenthat way. when we do that, all of a sudden lebanese are going to say, i'm staying in syracuse and pennsylvania, i'm staying in maryland. the people of maryland have been so incredible. we had rallies in maryland and pennsylvania that were absolutely unbelievable. yesterday in pennsylvania, we were in an arena that was like madison square garden. they turned away thousands of people. unfortunately the press never reports it. they always show my face. does anybody want to show this arena that has tens of thousands of people in it? that's ok because i will explain it to you. we'll have our country back, make america great again. for the 5 states, i am so honored. this was to me our biggest night. [applause]

thank you very much. we will take some questions. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: yeah, i don't know the final numbers-- for the most part, it has been millions of dollars. i consider myself the presumptive nominee. [applause] [indiscernible] senator cruz and governor kasich should really get out of the race. they have to victory. -- have no path to victory.

they should get out of the race and he will the republican party. -- and heal the republican party. ina unifier. -- i am a unifier. we have people asking this party . we're going to have such unity. some have gone too far over the edge. we are going to beat hillary clinton. [applause]

mr. trump: we are leading by so much. i think we are going to hit the numbers pretty easily. [indiscernible] mr. trump: with pennsylvania, we had a massive victory, above 60%. pennsylvania has been amazing. [applause] we've got 17 delegates outright. you have 54 or so that are up for grabs. the one thing different with pennsylvania -- i have heard about it for years -- the winner of pennsylvania, there is a moral obligation, at least in the first round, to support the person that won. we won big. you have the three people.

when you have 3 people, to get 60%, that's almost unheard of. getting 60% with 2 people, that's still a really big victory. we have a great republican leader and you have a moral obligation. all i care about is the first round. you hear that cruz growing around biting people dinner, getting them into hotel rooms. he's looking for the second and third and fourth. i'm not too interested in that. we are going to win on the first. i'm not looking to go to the second and fourth. the truth is, even if it went there, can you imagine-- in california, i think we hit 50% today. they are at 18%, 60% -- there is a massive difference. --18%, 16%. california is home of area -- home of carrier

air-conditioning, which is leaving for mexico. i am saying that won't happen if i'm president. carrier will not be leaving indiana if i'm president. i've talked about this for a long time. the unfair thing that pundits never report, when i began the process, very capable people 17, ahese people -- record in history of politics. 17 people. i start winning. i'll win new hampshire, and i get 32%. people will say, why did he get 32%? you can't get 50% when you have 16 people. i go to south carolina. we have a massive victory. that was cruz' stronghold. except i won it in a landslide because of the evangelicals that back to me.

they have been unbelievable. i won there. we had 12-14, many people. we got a lot. we went to nevada. alabama, with all the people we had, we almost had to percent. massachusetts, we almost got 50%. i was watching tonight, the pundits never talk about the fact that these early states 3 is unfiar. -- is unfair. there is a big difference between fighting one person and fighting two people in terms of percentages. whenh you talk about the 1237 number, the first 70%, we had 16-17 people to 10, to 8, to 6, to 5, to 4, and now we are at 3. it's really unfair. i mean, i have always been good

at math. nobody ever discusses that. when i watch television -- whether it's cnn, fox -- they never talk about the fact that we have all these people. 38%, and got a 32 or you have 7 people running, that's like 75%. over 60%ed to have hit in virtually every race with only three people left. [applause] i did not want to bore you with that long -- i'm telling you, it's never discussed on television. >> can you come up with a short list of potential running mates? mr. trump: he is wasting his time. list of running mates? i heard he had a news conference conferenced a news was for the purpose that is getting out of the race. that is what i thought.

and instead just more talk. no, i don't even want to think about that. i'm not doing that. we're going to set up a committee in the not too distant future. i don't want to think about it right now. think chris christie is fantastic. [applause] >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: no, i am me. he will be presidential, not essential -- it's easy to be presidential. i am not playing a part. look, i started off it 17, and in winning, it is over. as far as it can concern, it's over. why would i change? you have a football team and you are winning and you get to the super bowl, you don't change your quarterback.

so i'm not changing. i think we are going to do great in the general. i may act differentlym but my thought process is the same. if i speak to group of 10 people in a conference room, i'm not going to speak the same way i spoke in pennsylvania yesterday to 25,000 people. but i will be saying similar things. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: i'm doing a foreign policy speech, yes. which i look forward to. are you concerned about losing enthusiastic long-term supporters-- mr. trump: it's an interesting question. i've had many people write in, tweet in, call in -- please don't change, state the way you are! look, i'm not changing. i went to the best schools. i am going to represent our person with dignity and very

well. but i do want to change my personality. [applause] it got me here. somebody said, if you change you would be where you are right now. we beat a lot of people. a lot of people are saying what happened darling, why are we sitting here watching television? when i announced, there were many favorites going to win. one of those people raised over $100 million in a pac, have a lot of money personally. others had big advantages, governors of major states, etc. they were all going to do great. but one after another, and here overand, with 5 victories 60%. >> tonight in her speech, hillary clinton had a theme about love jumping hate. -- love trumping hate. mr. trump: i call her crooked hillary.

she would be a horrible president, she knows nothing about job creation. her husband signed nafta which destroyed to this country economically. look at new england, pennsylvania, nafta was a disaster. her husband signed it. it was a disaster for the country. hillary will be horrible, absolutely horrible on economic development. she will be terrible on jobs. she does nothing about jobs except jobs for herself. [applause] when it came to answering the phone at 3:00 in the morning, she was sleeping. she wasn't with benghazi. look at syria, so many other things. she will not be a good president. she doesn't have the strength, the stamina. i know about dealing with china. i've made billions of dollars dealing with china. china can be dealt with and you can get along with them. hillary does not have the

strength or the stamina to deal with china or other things. put bottom line, one of the big problems our country has his problems with trade. china, japan, mexico -- so many countries ripping us left and right. the politicians cannot handle the problem. they don't have the competence to do it. most of them are paid off through campaign contributions so that they don't touch certain things. when people are making less money in real wages than they were 18 years ago, and some people say wow, he had a big crowd. that's one of the big reasons. you have people making less money today, because you see every stat -- less money today than they made 18 years ago. and in some cases, they are working 2 jobs. so they are getting older and working harder. it shouldn't be that way. >> you are not worried about being labeled-- mr. trump: no, not worried about

it. i am not a hateful person. i mcpherson that lets people. [applause] -- am a person that loves people. that's the theme. she is going with that. i will do far more for women than hillary clinton leveraging. -- clinton will ever do. she will not be good with the military. she will not be good at protecting our country. she has had her shot. she raised her hand when it came to iraq, and she shouldn't have voted. take a look at the things bernie sanders was saying about hillary clinton. he said she is not qualified to be president. else. said something you ahve to run and see what happens. but he said some things about her that were so incredible. and so incredibly bad. is a great level of hatred. he has been telling the truth. i think bernie sanders should run as an independent. i think he will do great.

is there a level of frustration-- mr. trump: i think the party is seeing me that way. i'm getting calls that you would not believe. i can even know how they can do it, because they have said such horrible things about me. now they want to join the team. chris can tell you that. ben carson can tell you that. other people can tell you that. corey, all can tell you. -- paul can tell you. i actually say, how can you do this? and they have no problem. believe.t you wouldn't names that you interview and say oh, trump trump trump. and how they want to join the team. a lot of them will be coming out soon. >> [indiscernible]

tomorrow is going to be interesting. some of my views on foreign policy and defense, and lots of other things. and part of it is the economics. i was asked the question recently by wolf blitzer on cnn, and he talked about nato. at first, people didn't like it. they said, trump is right. i said it was obsolete and too many people are getting a free ride. we are funding 72-73% of nato. many of these countries are just taking advantage of the united states. you have to pay up. we don't have a country with $19 trillion in debt. -- wef what i'm saying love our country and our allies, but our allies can no longer be taking advantage of this country. this isn't 40 years or 20 years ago, this is now.we have to

rebuild our infrastructure, our country, we have to get rid of isis and fast. our military is totally depleted. it's going to be the cheapest thing we can do. a lot of great things are going to happen. we are going to make america great again. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: no no, you are really going to hear different things. i'll never change one thing. you know what i will never change? "make america great again." [applause] no, is not going to be the trump a doctrine. -- trump doctrine.in life you have to have, its ability. you may say one thing and, the following year you want to change it, because circumstances are different. i have followed people for years. i have friends, many of them endorsing me, many great

business people. you have to have flexibility. you can't say, this is my doctrine and i won't move. the world changes, leaders change.lots of things happen . you can't say that. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: we don't have a ceiling. do you know what our ceiling is? i think it's 100%. [applause] soin, the ceiling was always unfair. i want to do it because it's so important. the ceiling, they kept saying, he doesn't hit 50%. how do you hit 50% when you have 16 people in a race? you can't do it. no, you don't understand, i have many people running. i think i'm going to win new york. know of the republican can say it. conservative voters?

did you see the polls coming out tonight? the most conservative people into the republican party, tonight, back donald trump. [applause] that is the single biggest question i am getting -- student at. we are going to work on that. --student debt. students have the problem with that. -- with debt. they go to a could college, they are choking on debt. they get good marks, they working hard, and they can't get a job. i am going to drink jobs back -- brings jobs back to this country like you have never seen. [applause] that is the biggest problem.

we have a lot of contrast in terms of jobs, in terms of how i would handle wall street. hillary clinton is funded by wall street, folks. she won't get the nomination unless she gets indicted with these e-mails. you look at what happens to so many other people. they went through hell, their lives have been destroyed for doing less than what hillary clinton did. what you did is an outrage. it is absolute criminal outrage. for her to be able to run as a democrat, maybe that is why bernie sanders isn't finished. the only way you can say that is if something happens to her. she is being protected by the democrats. i see it, and whether i read about it in the papers or watch it with legal experts or tv, virtually every one of them says what she did is a criminal act

and a very dangerous thing for our country. yet here she is running for president. i think hillary is a flawed candidate. i think she's going to be easy to beat. i think she's going to be much easier to beat than most of the 16 people that i competed with just recently. [applause] >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: to me, always the number one security threat to the united states is nuclear. that si our biggest threat. is our biggest risk. the power of weaponry. unbelievably careful. president obama said the biggest threat is global warming. give me a break. the biggest threat to our

country is nuclear. we cannot let iran get a nuclear weapon. [applause] we are going to do something where we will have a real partnership with china. china has rebuild itself by making a fortune over us. china has tremendous power over north korea. we have to be very vigilant on north korea. we cannot let this guy go much further. china should handle the problem. they can handle it very easily. they say that they can, but they are toying with us. we have a lot of power. we are going to have a great relationship with china, with putin and russia. china has a lot of power over north korea. they just refuse to use it, and they refuse to talk about it. they don't respect us or our president and they are getting away with murder. , very going to happen

important to me -- nuclear weaponry, that is your single biggest threat in the world today. no, that is a civil case. i am going to win that easily. >> [indiscernible] my unfavorables have come down a lot over the last few weeks. remember this -- i saw it on all of the cable stations, and a lot of the networks. had 55,000 negative ads against me. had iran in florida, i 14,000 negative ads. millions of dollars, and i won in a landslide. i've had negative ads all throughout, and i won in a

landslide. you all reported it. even carl would agree to that. i think we are going to hurt the industry. largely the ads were false. i had 55,000. jeb spent millions of dollars on negative ads. most of these people that have been fighting the oregon. when i am one-on-one with history -- with hillary, she will be much easier to beat thas >> are you worried that governor kasich can [indiscernible] i think they are hurting the party because they

have zero path to victory. we are going to win on the first ballot. we don't look for the delegates on the other ballots. let us assume it did go beyond the first ballot, and let us ,ssume that the head of the rnc and trump was while short or 15 delegates short, or 25 short, but 500 more than cruz and far more than that ahead of kasich. you go to a second ballot. trump, by that time, will be 5 million votes because of california, and in the end that and other places, trump will be 5 million votes ahead of cruz. 5 will be much more than million votes ahead of kasich. i call kasich -- now i change it to one out of 46. i would have won ohio hot i not

been given a dirty coal saying -- dirty poll. if i spent two more days in ohio, i would have won it. i am the one that brought all these people and the party. that is what the republican party is up almost 70% from four years ago. [applause] mr. trump: those people, at a minimum, are going to be very upset, and at a minimum they are not going to vote. say, ok, trump won by 5 million votes, he is five, six, hundred delegates more than , and he brought millions of people into the party, and everybody is talking about the party, world wide. how hot, the republican party. from fourats are down

years ago. the republicans are, 70% up from four years ago. that is amazing. that is not because of kasich cruz. that is because of me. how do you say to them, we are going to choose a man lost by 5 million votes and 500 delegates. i don't think you can do that. with that being said, i intend to get enough delegates, but that is it. yes, ma'am, one more question. go ahead. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: i will sit with my feelings on immigration. if you look at what is going on in immigration, and the record numbers of people right now that are pouring across the borders of this country, its use me. i just read it. i read it in a legitimate journal. we need protection in our

country. you look at the kind of crime, you look at what is going on economically, we need borders. to come into want our country, but i want them to come in legally. they have to come in through a process. [applause] mr. trump: there will be one more. >> [indiscernible] -- trump: exceedingly smart excuse me? card she has is the woman's card. she has nothing else going. frankly, if hillary clinton were a man, i don't think she would get 75% of the vote. the only thing she has got going is a woman's card, and women don't like her. look how well i did with women tonight. >> donald trump after his press conference at trump tower in new york city after sweeping the five states that held republican presidential primaries today. i want to apologize you about the audio coming out of that event. the news organizations pour their coverage, and clearly, the organizers were surprised by the questions in that. we were not technically prepared and it was difficult to hear them. we are sorry about that. the headline coming out of it is clearly donald trump saying that he considers itself the presumptive nominee. on indiana next week. he took a couple of questions on what would happen if it went beyond a second ballot.

1237, it is all about the delegates. on the republican side, it is a clean sweep for donald trump winning all five states, beginning with rhode island. in many of the state, when he was more than 60% of these votes. a majority of the vote in connecticut, delaware, and their religion. on the democratic side, hillary clinton was able to pull ahead in connecticut. the result in that state showing that she has 50.3% of the votes. compared to, or to 7.9% is the more populous areas of connecticut. sanders safer bernie was rhode island, where the unaffiliated voters could vote in the democratic primaries. hillary clinton is ahead with 99% reporting hillary clinton winning in pennsylvania and maryland. i want to share with you to house race results. chuckof all, congressman

defeating -- conceding defeat to dwight evans with about 43% of the vote compared to congressman front the. in pennsylvania, where congressman bill shuster is in a very close race with a tea party candidate. he is holding onto a very narrow lead. he is just over 20,000 votes compared to our helpers and who has just over 27,000. one alreadyts, conceding defeat. therrow lead in pennsylvania house race. susan: we're going to take a few phone calls to get your reaction to tonight's results. trump ando donald hillary clinton's speeches. our phone lines will be open and you can send us a tweet at c-span.

on the phone right now with us is john, who writes about politics with the baltimore sun. aboutt to talk to you maryland. against ahollen sitting member of congress, john edwards. the winner in this was mr. van hollen. tell us about how this race was fought. contestedas certainly , and with it not being as close as i thought it would be. i thought we might not get a call in this race. there was a lot of back and forth. toards, very early on had establish yourself as a more progressive candidate. .he went after chris van hollen mr. fritze: she really tried to establish herself as to the left

of chris van hollen. she also tried to establish yourself as a bit of an outsider . she talked about bringing a new perspective to the senate. donna edwards is african-american. she would have been the first person to win a statewide election in maryland as an african-american, and only the second woman of color in the senate in its history. there was sort of an historical .rgument to her campaign ultimately, that fell short. van hollen had a great deal of support on the establishment. he had more money. in the end, that message clearly came out on top. anchor: this was the race to fill the retiring senator barbara mikulski. this speech being made by donna edwards and in this race -- how much money was being spent? mr. fritze: quite a bit by chris van hollen.

he spent quite a bit in advertising. edwards had not raised that much money. she had struggled along to fund raise, however, she was helped a , which camey emily indirectly on her behalf in the race which he was not on the air. also, donald who is a big-time contributor, educated to a second separate super pac which ran this controversial ad on gun control. a lot of people feel like this with a sticking point in the race, an argument that the edwards campaign had made on its own for a long time, and that was that chris van hollen -- the argument was that he caved to the nra as part of the 2010 housese act in which democrats carved out exemptions for the nra and other groups from the disclosure requirement. so, edward had made this argument all along that van hollen had carved this out and

she was going along with that. the super pac came in with more theessive ad, making argument in the same way. the white house came in and said not to do that. the ad included an image of the president speaking about the sandy hook massacre. there was a lot of back and forth about this ad. i think a lot of people think that that i and the white house jumping and -- that ad and the white house jumping in -- anchor: a lot of people think that this primary becomes the election because of the state of politics in maryland. i think that is generally true. mr. fritze: you will see republicans in the state of ireland saying that hogan was a bit of a surprise. maryland, democrats have a two to one registration advantage in the state. it is very rare for republicans

to win statewide office here. what republicans would say is that hogan did it. i think, that will come down will largely turnout in the presidential. we had really low turnout. the conventional wisdom is that the presidential election drives turnout up. thearyland, if you look at numbers, there are plenty of election years were that is not the case. so, i think that kind of remains to be seen. certainly, the very wide conventional wisdom is that this is a state that favors democrats , with the caveat that republicans will make argument that maybe things are changing a little bit and will point to hogan as an example. anchor: let me turn to the race to succeed chris van hollen. it was another interesting concept in the house and also one that was -- had a lot of

candidates vying for that privilege. fascinatinga really race, partially because of its proximity to washington, d.c.. maryland's eighth congressional district is basically the suburbs, which means it has a lot of interesting figures in it. we have supreme court justices in that district. high placed officials at the white house and that district. we also have a lot of money in that district. it is one of the districts where presidential candidate come through, and they may overlook maryland in the general because it is so democratic. they will come into montgomery county, which is where that district is based on race. that race ended up being the most expensive of the country. feisty --y, a pretty certainly, a pretty fight the contest. you had a small business owner who self financed the two -- to the tune of --

he drove the numbers up. mediaalso an expensive market. you have to raise a good deal of money to be successful there. at this point, we have nothing to call you in that race, but a senator named jamie raskin appears to be leading in early appealed to he has sort of the more progressive part of that district. he has always been a fairly the generaler of assembly, and a third candidate that got them was former television news anchor actually named kathleen matthews. because of all of these characters, there was a lot of interest in that race. much.: thank you very it was an interesting race or. we appreciate you being with us. declared?a winner mr. fritze: they do not.

or anybody else. bernie sanders was. so, i think that is really important. clinton, on the other hand, has not shown her speech for wall street. hillary clinton, on the other hand, is still supporting fracking, and she said she is worried about global warming, that she supported fracking all over the world. so, she is very hypocritical where bernie sanders is very to the point. do you support fracking? : no.nswer was to letters hillary to started talking about, i am going to have a lot of rules and regulations. there were a couple of places where she went with her campaign where people in small towns in pennsylvania were saying, hey, they are fracking in our neighborhood, our water is causing fires and our people are getting cancer. and she never went to go see why because the fracking company

steve scully, what to close out the evening for us? ost: unaffiliated voters were able to vote in rhode island. that is the one state bernie sanders has been able to win. let's talk about republican delegates. these are from the associated press. it is our source of information with the delegate totals. you need 1237 delegates to win the nomination on the first ballot. we are quite familiar with that number. donald trump the only republican candidate picking up delegates with 950. senator cruz has 560. did not win any additional delegates tonight coming in second or third in most states. ohio governor john kasich now at 153. on the democratic side, the magic number to win in philadelphia is 2383 delegates. hillary clinton with pledged and superdelegates has 2137. senator sanders has 1306

delegates. that is placed and superdelegates. in comparison, hillary clinton has 519 superdelegates. these are elected officials and party leaders. senator sanders has 39. mackenzievania, katie is challenging senator pat toomey. in the senate race she defeated one in a hard-fought race. there is this from a newspaper. josh joins us on the phone. he writes for "national journal." thanks for being with us. it does come down to indiana. if senator cruz does not win next week, then what? cruz loses, it is all but over for him. it is mathematically possible for him to deny donald trump delegates, but the race would be

over. if you look at the pennsylvania delegates he won that are unbound going into the convention, it is very likely trump would be able to cobble together a majority of delegates. if trump does, not win in indiana, it would be another setback after a big night tonight, doing extremely well in northeastern states. for him to have a setback with the race moving to western states, it could move the trajectory of the race and give cruz and kasich the opportunity to deny him the delegates he needs. is notovernor kasich going to compete in indiana. it clears the plain field for senator cruz. the time the scenes -- behind-the-scenes, what will he be doing in the next seven days to defeat donald trump? donald trump will be in indiana. both and governor

kasich will be spending the next week in indiana in indiana. indiana is ground zero for the nomination. can essentially put the race away with a win in indiana. allocates the candidate that wins each of the nine congressional districts in a winner take all fashion. there is a real swing. if trump wins by a couple of that would give him the majority of the 57 delegates in the state. if cruz wins, he would be getting the majority. trump probably got about 15 or 20 more than people expected with his strong performance in the northeast. but cruz could get 20 to 25 more than people expected if he does fairly well in indiana. indiana is a very consequent estate on the map.

it conceal the race for donald trump or give cruz new life. host: they will remain unbound through the convention. this is the super pac supporting ohio governor john kasich, the third candidate in the race. he had no public events tonight. he was to be in indiana tonight. those events were canceled. i want to show this out to you and get your reaction. [video clip] ♪ >> and the g.o.p. nomination for president goes to john kasich. when a long, fascinating trip it has been. how did it go from the final three to the one the establishment did not think could win? running for president is not about the establishment. it is about the delegates. the delegates decided this election was about winning the presidency. and only john kasich could beat hillary clinton.

in the final hours, it came down to 1237 brave americans. you, who overcame tremendous personal pressure and did the right thing. they nominated the only candidate who could win the only election that mattered. the candidate who was presidential. john kasich. >> new day independent media committee inc. is responsible for content of this advertising. host: that spot released earlier today from the super pac supporting john kasich. possiblehinking or a scenario for governor kasich? guest: good luck trying to convince even the delegates. kasich is behind rubio who has an out of the race for about six weeks. kasich still does not have as many delegates as marco rubio. it is a tough sell even for the delegates in cleveland to say kasich is leading hillary clinton in the polls and that is

why he should be the republican nominee. has 1237 or comes close and can win the nomination on the first ballot, it is a moot point. if it comes down to a second ballot, cruz is better positioned than kasich to cobble together a majority. even if it goes to a third or fourth ballot in cleveland, there are other outside republican candidates that might be a more attractive option. scott walker, rubio, you could name a lot of republicans. the fact that kasich, the northeast should have been kasich's states. this is one of the central flaws will be stop trump movement. they thought kasich will be strong in states like maryland and pennsylvania and other northeastern states that are more moderate. he did not have enough money and his message did not resonate. now he is lumping to the finish as we get to cleveland. host: let's look at the upcoming primaries and conclude with a statement from senator sanders. next week, indiana will be a key

contest for senator ted cruz and also for senator bernie sanders. that is the may 3 primary. that will be followed by the guam democratic conferences and the nebraska primaries. west virginia's primary is also a may 10. senator sanders was there this evening. the kentucky democratic primary on may 17. on that same date, the oregon primary. campaignanders congratulating hillary clinton and saying he looks forward to continuing the contest in the 14 remaining competitive races where democrats will be challenging for delegates. no signs he is changing his strategy or withdrawing. guest: no, from his own speech tonight and his advisors public comments, there is no sign sanders is dropping out or starting to tone down his rhetoric. this is a divided democratic party, even though there is no path realistically for sanders to win more pledged delegates than hillary clinton.

he's still going to be trying to get his message turn. if it was not for donald trump and the republican division he has created, you would see a lot of these issues imitating and a democratic party as well. he is themp if republican nominee will make it easier for the democratic party tonight. there is no sign from bernie sanders he is looking to get out or start to tone down the rhetoric as we finish the primary process. host: the political editor for "national journal." this is the headline at nationaljournal.com. indiana." for cruz in thank you for being with us. back to susan swain. host: thank you, steve scully. we will be here next tuesday as all eyes are on the state of indiana, the next pivot point in this primary process. thanks for being with us tonight.

recently a town hall. he was asked, named the top functions of the federal government. he said security, and then he said health care, education, and housing. [crowd booing] sen. cruz: funny thing is, if you ask hillary, she would say the same thing. if you ask bernie, bernie would be like, that is aggressive. you don't only want socialized medicine. you also want to put the federal government in charge of all education. education. common core. [crowd booing] sen. cruz: according to donald, that is the core responsibility of the federal government. and housing? how many people are ready for the federal government taking over the housing market? and, you know, donald and hillary, they are flip sides of the same coin. hillary clinton has made

millions of dollars selling power and influence in washington. and donald trump has made billions of dollars buying politicians like hillary clinton. but saw him in the media might say, oh, come on,. . that is not fair it is not reasonable to suggest donald trump and hillary clinton could ever run as a ticket. i'm going to walk you through 13 policy issues where donald and hillary have the very same views. let's start with jobs, my number one priority is jobs, bringing back jobs and economic. rose. -- economic growth. jobs backanufacturing to the state of indiana. wages for the

hard-working men and women in this country. but it is interesting. donald trump on jobs, donald and hillary both agree our taxes should be increased. donald trump went on national television and said, yes, we should increase jobs. that is a great idea. increased taxes, that is a great idea if you want to kill jobs. if i am president, we are going to cut taxes. [applause] the second article area under jobs, donald and hillary both support the obamacare individual mandate. both of them think it is a terrific idea. if you care about jobs, you know obamacare is the biggest killer in america. and as president, i will repeal every word of obamacare.

a third area where donald and hillary get it wrong on jobs is immigration. both donald and hillary believed illegal immigrants who are here should be able to become u.s. citizens. thinks we should fight back to their home country first. but let them right back in and make them u.s. citizens. let me tell you what i'm going to do as president. where would going to stop amnesty -- we are going to stop amnesty, secure the borders, and end of welfare benefits for those here illegally. [applause] but let's talk about frfreem, the fundamental freedoms of the bill of rights. amen. [applause] sen. cruz: donald trump and hillary clinton both support taxpayer funding for planned parenthood. [crowd booing]

sen. cruz: indeed, donald trump and hillary clinton both describe planned parenthood as terrific! instructent, i will the department of justice to open an investigation into planned parenthood. [cheers and applause] donald trump and hillary clinton both supported onl clinton's national ban many of the most important firearms in america. [crowd booing] sen. cruz: as president, i will defend the second amendment right to keep and bear arms. [cheers and applause] sen. cruz: donald trump and hillary clinton both believe we should negotiate with harry reid

and chuck schumer and the democrats on supreme court nominations. people ofword to the indiana and the people of america that every justice i appoint to the court will be princeton bold constitutionalists -- principled constitutionalist. [applause] and unlike donald and hillary, i will not compromise away your religious liberty. [cheers and applause] sen. cruz: and donald trump and hillary clinton both agree grown men should be allowed to use the little girls' restroom. [crowd booing] sen. cruz: now let me say it is just common sense. this is not a matter of right or left or democrat or republican.

this is basic common sense that grown, adult men, strangers, should not be alone in a bathroom with a little girl. [cheers and applause] sen. cruz: and yet, donald and hillary care more about the p.c. police than they do about speaking the truth on basic common sense. let's talk about security. issue whereolicy donald and hillary's views are identical. donald trump and hillary clinton both believe the u.s. government should be neutral between israel and the palestinians. as president, i will not be neutral. we will stand with israel! [cheers and applause]

sen. cruz: the knife area they th area they nin agree is donald trump and hillary clinton have both said they would keep the catastrophic iranian nuclear deal in place. as president, i will rip to shreds this nuclear deal with iran. [applause] the 10th area of agreement. donald trump and hillary clinton both believe hillary clinton was one of the greatest secretaries of state of all time. [crowd booing] sen. cruz: that is what donald said. why do you think he kept contributing to her? why do you think donald trump gave money to hillary clinton's presidential campaign? and then, let's talk more

broadly about washington corruption. you know, donald trump loves to style himself an outsider. comes ton, when it human decency, politeness, respect -- he's right. you know, most people in indiana are raised that you don't yell and scream and curse and insult everyone you see. [applause] sen. cruz: but donald trump and hillary clinton's campaigns are both run by washington lobbyists. washington lobbyists run their entire campaigns for both of them. donald trump and hillary clinton both supported obama's failed stimulus plan. and donald trump and hillary clinton both supported obama's

tarp bailout of wall street. you know, it was striking. just this past week, donald's lobbyist campaign manager was talking to the top officials of the republican party. and he said donald is just playing a role. he's just playing a part. he does not mean any of this. he does not believe any of this. he is going to change and pivot away from everything he is saying. now, when that was first reported, the trump campaign immediately tried to deny it. but the problem was they caught trump's lobbyist campaign manager on tape. they have him on tape saying donald is just playing a role and he will be a completely different person. as donald put it, he can be the most politically correct person on earth. of having theough most politically correct person on earth in the white house.

[applause] donald is telling us he is lying to us. every one of us is fed up with politicians who betray us, who make promises and don't do it. donald is telling us he is lying to us. he says he can be a different person tomorrow then he is today. well, let me tell you what. i am the same person i was yesterday and that i will be tomorrow as president! [cheers and applause] sen. cruz: the federal out-of-control taxes and regulations are killing jobs across this country. the working men and women in this country, the men and women with calluses on your hands, are

paying the price for washington that is not listening to us. that is captive to the washington lobbyists like the trump and clinton campaigns. [applause] sen. cruz: and this is no longer a theoretical and distant threat. this is a real threat that has come home. in the great movie, "hoosiers," there is a wonderful quote from that movie. there is two kind of dumb. a guy that gets naked and runs out in the snow and barks at the moon. and the guy that is the same thing in your living room. first one don't matter. second one, you're kind of forced to deal with." well, let me tell you right now this out-of-control federal government, these bureaucrats destroying cold jobs across indiana, destroying small

businesses across indiana, hammering farmers, hammering thehers, they have become guy, naked, barking at the moon in our living room. and i am here to tell you, we are going to deal with it! you have one donald trump supporter who comes in and disrupts. i note that what he does is he wants to scream and yell and disrupt. thank you, sir. one thing that mr. trump does not understand is the first amendment gives everyone the right to speak, but it does not give you the right to disrupt. it does not give you the right to try to silence others. it does not -- hey, treat him with respect. everyone, keep your hands off of him. keep your hands off of him. see, one difference. if this were a trump rally, i would be encouraging people to punch him. instead, i am encouraging people to treat him with respect, with civility. he is an american. and i can tell you -- [cheers and applause]

sen. cruz: i can tell you even as he comes here and tries to scream and yell and insult, very pattern,ing the trump i'm running to be his president as much as i am running to be everyone's president. [cheers and applause] bernie sanders: west virginia, thank you! what an extraordinary turnout

tonight. thanks so much for being here. [cheers and applause] sen. sander: let me thank helen, chris, and jeff for the introductory remarks. i want to thank all of you for being here. you.t to thank all of i want to thank all of you for being prepared to stand up, fight back, and make this country the nation we know it can become. [cheers and applause] this campaign is not just about electing a president. it is about transforming our

nation. having the courage to demand a political revolution. [cheers and applause] you are the: and revolutionaries. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: because you that, unlike football or basketball, politics is not a spectator sport. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: so, let me tell you a secret that many others will not. each and every one of you, powerful people if you choose to exercise that power. [cheers and applause]

sen. sanders: the fight we are fight.is not an easy but i know you are prepared to 1%, that fight against the against the billionaire class. applause]d against ars: and small number of people with incredible wealth and incredible power who control our economic life, our political life, and our media life. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: when we began this campaign just about a year ago, we started with no political

organization. we started with no money. and we had no name recognition outside of vermont. applause]d sen. sanders: and i want all of you to get up to vermont and visit our beautiful state. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: and when we began this campaign, the media said bernie is a nice guy, he combs his hair really well. [laughter] sen. sanders: top-notch dresser. [applause] sen. sanders: but nonetheless, he really is a fringe candidate. the campaign is a fringe campaign, not to be taken seriously. [crowd booing]

sen. sanders: and in the middle of all of that, we were taking on the most powerful political organization in america. an organization that elected a president, president clinton, on two occasions and ran a very strong campaign for secretary clinton for president in 2008. and when we began this campaign, we were about 3% in the national polls. behind about 60 points secretary clinton. well, a lot has happened in the last year. [cheers and applause] [crowd chanting "bernie"]

sen. sanders: as of today, we have now won 16 primaries and caucuses all over the country. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: and with your help, we are going to win here in west virginia. [cheers and applause] oversanders: we have won 1200 delegates to the democratic national convention. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: and in the last several weeks, the national polls don't show us 60 points down. a few of us actually have us ahead or a few points behind. [cheers and applause]

what is also and extremely important, if the democratic party is to look at which candidate is the candidate to defeat donald trump or any other republican -- but we're seeing -- what we are seeing on national polls which have is 15, 20 points ahead of donald trump, far more than secretary clinton. [cheers and applause] most every national poll in every state -- and every state poll has us defeating trump and for us isn significantly larger than that of secretary clinton.

and the reason that we are doing so much better against republican candidates is that not only are we winning the overwhelming majority of democratic votes, but we are anding independent votes, some republican votes as well. [cheers and applause] and that is a point that i hope the delegates to the democratic convention fully understand. everyone,al election, democrat, independent, republican, has the right to vote for president. the elections are not closed primaries. we were in new york state last week.

3 million people in new york state could not vote. because they were independent. independents all over the country will be voting in november for the next president. [cheers and applause] win theost cases, we independent vote by a two to one margin. wellcampaign is doing as as it is with the extraordinary energy and enthusiasm that we are generating all across this country. look at this room here tonight. we have almost 6000 people.
