steve: doing the vetting is the same person who worked with john mccain and sarah palin. bob: right, and back then, the vetting had to be very rushed, because the decision that mccain made was kind of last moment, but he is the same person that vetted palin, and that took some criticism after something came out after she was announced. what are the lessons? bob: will the lessons are when you are vetting, you have to know everything. have longo conversations about any skeletons in the closet. you have to hire people to look into their background, because all of the media is going to be looking into their backgrounds once they are announced, so there cannot be any surprises. and i think that is the lesson learned from any vetting, that you have to be prepared. steve: let's talk about the top two candidates, at least

according to your reporting. chris christie was vetted in 2012. he was not selected by mitt romney. what do you think prevented mitt romney from selecting him back then? : i think was relationships, and mitt romney felt better with paul ryan. now, chris christie gave the keynote at the 2012 republican convention, and that speech was widely panned. he said i or me 43 times in that speech. he did not talk about romney. he talked about himself. christie backed truck. that was a big deal at the time. chris christie took some flack for it, but i think chris christie would serve as his vice president is asked. steve: two issues. first, bridge gate. new jersey. why ies, and that is think it is somewhat all that he has gone to the top, but maybe it is about being comfortable with governing, this is someone i can trust, but the bridge gate

issue is an issue, and the shoe never dropped on that. it hurt him politically. also, backing donald trump has hurt him with some new jersey voters. you mentioned his approval ratings in new jersey, and democrats are big favorites to win new jersey, so chris christie on the ticket is not going to help you with that state. steve: newt gingrich. he is on his third wife. donald trump is on his third wife. do these issues matter? bob: i think they matter may be as much as they did in the past. newt gingrich knows legislative process, was the speaker, clashed with then-president bill clinton, and that is what donald trump says he needs, not an outsider. he is an outsider. he needs someone who is an insider. gingrich is fairly smart. however, there are some who are not fans of newt gingrich and were not fans of him and endorsement romney over him

after newt gingrich made his surge, winning carolina. you could certainly call gingrich not an insider in some ways, because a lot of the insiders do not like him, but he has been around washington a long time, and he would give that legislative experience to the ticket. steve: we sat down with him in the studio just a few weeks ago. it is clear he would accept the nomination. he is interested in being vice president. there are other names that have been mentioned but may not want the position. who? bob: well, i think susana martinez, the governor of new mexico. she would potentially be a good pick, a woman, hispanic, and donald trump needs to improve the numbers in both women and hispanics. steve: he was very negative at about her just a few weeks ago. bob: yes, and maybe they had a conversation about being veep. mitch mcconnell mentioned about doing that. nikki haley is another, the

mate, how do they can pay for it? what do they do? bob: that is a good question. joe biden was saying he didn't want it, i have never had a boss, which is true, the behind the scenes, his campaign was working to get the job. they were meeting with obama officials and noting his legislative experience. talking about gas. biden was always prone to gas, and you need this experience on the ticket, so there is a little bit of a dance between the candidates and the would-be candidates. television, those are basically tryouts. john edwards, before he was picked by john kerry, he went out on the campaign trail and made the case for john kerry forcibly, raised money, so those are big things. it is a tryout. hillary clinton or donald trump, they are considering multiple people, and they are looking at them on television, what they are doing, their loyalty. it is very important, but it is

we saw the stage unveiled this past week, what it will look like in cleveland. donald trump has said he wants to make his announcement during the week of the convention, but you reported last week that it could come this week or even the week following the convention. top: yes, i think the interest in this is really going to catch fire after july 4, and who knows when it is going to come out? i do not think you can keep a secret all of the way to the convention. it is also how much news coverage you are going to get. thewant to get coverage at convention. you're going to get coverage at the convention, especially a donald trump convention. daysu announce it a few after july 4, everybody is going to be talking about that, and maybe it dominates the news cycles all of the way through the convention, and that all plays into the thing that republican wants, and democrats. they want a convention bounce in the polls. that is very important, and how do you do that?
9:57 pm
you have a good convention. steve: how do you think this is going to unfold? bob: i think the donald trump convention is unlike what you see in politics. there were rumors about people speaking. i do not think that will happen. --ould be surprised if donald trump looks at polls very, very closely. he knows where his weaknesses are, and certainly, i think he have to seriously consider taking a female on his ticket. that could help his numbers with women. as we mentioned, susana martinez is not interested in it. recently, "the washington post" had a poll out about doing poorly with hispanic. will jeff sessions, will joni ernst, will they help me in those numbers, and that is why i think we will see some people going up and down, top-tier favorites, but i think he's fiercely has to consider a

woman. is also facing dissent among delegates. 150 to 200 delegates may try to change the rules. it is a difficult task according representative of the rnc. does this play into the dynamics of what trump is thinking about? yes, yes to unite the party, that those never trump people are not point to be satisfied only if donald trump is not the nominee, so no matter picks, someone that the washington establishment picks, like bob corker from tennessee, that is not going to placate them, so regardless, i think there are going to be those headlights at the republican convention, because those people are going to be there, and how do the truck people deal with it? story either way. especially with the sanders supporters and debbie
