been. the latest interviews with him is that he is planning to vote for donald trump but doesn't want to ep doris donald trump. senator ayotte have been using to tow this line. he will be a governor for a few more years. o this it is irrelevant. >> newt gingrich thought that donald trump made a decision with his head and not his heart and he was very short on the list of running mates and was not selected.
7:04 pm
>> clearly did not see gee oggra if i matter. we thought we were going to see in 2016, demographics mattering, picking a woman or african-american or hispanic. on the republican side, we have two white men. >> you tweet and i will ask you about a tweet, the bills that passed or didn't pass out of committee. what can you tell us with regard to mike pence? >> he served six terms in congress for 12 years. a research group is in

that one section about how mike pence really changed his mind of campaigning after a negative campaign he ran for congress in 1990 against bill sharp in indiana and said he changed his tune and would not run as a negative campaign. he ran in 2000 for the open seat in congress and that was a shoo about you see him talking negative campaigning at a time when donald trump's campaign is to be negative. this morning i wrote a column for "the globe" and i know who you are but what am i. this is an elementary school, i'm rubber and blue. don't worry who i am. this convention, he writes why
7:10 pm
you shouldn't vote for hillary clinton. and you might see something different. certainly from newt gingrich why not hillary clinton to why onald trump. donald trump has a 27% favor built rating. one in four people like him and three in four don't like him.
7:11 pm
you can't overstate that. there is no one saying i disagree with what you say. you have an open platform here on c-span and other networks. here it is, one week. and so for both of them, it is about this branding experience to like them and to why they should vote for them. and where republicans are saying, i know we have our issues internally. some of you like ted cruz and unhappy with the fact that you don't like trump but you have to stop hillary clinton. bernie sanders are more into the fold. you see that nationally in poll numbers, too. but saying we have to stop donald trump. >> the speculation on hillary clinton's running mate. the time line say it might be thursday night, friday or saturday.
7:12 pm
do you have any insights? >> they will have a official vent in florida on saturday. >> let me ask you about senator ted cruz and the other big speech tonight. there is no key note address? >> there is no key note address. and one of the subplots of this entire convention. donald trump doesn't want to give up the stage or spotlight to anyone. if you look at the first night, supposed to be about melania and comes out in this dramatic showy way and later on it was about her speech last night. and he couldn't give up the stage to his son. he had to have a televised live address from new york. today, supposed to be mike pence's day.
7:13 pm
>> donald trump doesn't want to give up the spotlight at all and we have a key note speaker and usually on a tuesday night. we aren't going to have a key note speaker and for all we know donald trump may show up and overshadow anything that mike pence has to say. >> it's getting louder in there as the convention gets under way. one republican center who isn't here, senator kelly ayotte. why is that race emblem attic of the challenges that the
7:14 pm
republicans face. they need to face it for re-election. >> six different republicans running for the senate that barack obama had won in 2012. and no senate has a relationship with donald trump than kelly ayotte. she has a very tough battle against the state's democratic governor. one of the most high profile races against two women. we had a senate race in hawaii, but this involves the incumbent sitting senator against the incumbent governor. and new hampshire has trended new hampshire particularly in presidential years. the ayotte, can't reject
7:15 pm
republican senator after his comments on the mexican heritage of a judge. but kelly ayotte, donald trump won the new hampshire primary by 20 points. she needs the republican base behind her. she is trying to thread that needle. her official position is she will vote for donald trump and will not endorse donald trump. if you can figure out the difference, but she will walk ie fine line and marco rubio, got her schedule what she is doing tomorrow and doing a constituent meeting in new hampshire about 11:30. but she is not going to do it. >> your home state senator, elizabeth warren, what role do you think she will play?
7:16 pm
just soruz or paul ryan interesting for a little dynamic. elizabeth warn will be fascinating. i don't know what her future holds. but the interesting subplot going on here. the republican national convention, you have the fight who is going to be the leader of the republican party, paul ryan, ted cruz or mike pence, who is going to lead the political wing. we have an interesting question, who leads progressives. will it be elizabeth warn or bernie sanders who has earned that title. people are beginning to understand as we are in philadelphia next week. >> let's turn back to what will
7:17 pm
happen tonight as day three of this republican convention. 50% left of this convention. let's talk about rinespreef is and what is his status as the leader of the g.o.p.? >> it has been so much laid upon him. you cannot overstatement what is happening right now. traditional the republican or democratic nominee takes over the national party and put their own people in and dictate what they want to happen and raise money for that party. but the head of the party is the candidate. that is not happening with donald trump. he is not putting any staff beyond a handful. in new hampshire, he has three staffers. in ohio, he has less than five staffers and letting the
7:18 pm
republican national committee bank roll his campaign and run this convention. we aren't going to see anything different in philadelphia where the democratic national convention. and the nature of the logistics happen, but it will be her convention. this is rinespreeb is' convention and and here's the dynamic. when i got married and i got engaged, my wife asked my inlaws, are you giving me money to run my wedding? and that is the dynamic. this is a totally different thing, the republican party and donald trump is showing up and owning the coverage. >> i want to share with you a tweet with kendall and talked to
7:19 pm
delegates e free the leader and september a tweet. fellow delegates when senator ted cruz speaks. when that happens in the 10:00 hour, what can we expect? >> one of the more interesting subplots. one of the stories i'm writing tomorrow is how -- before the gavel was even brought down, saw the race for 2020 begin. ted cruz wants to make this indicative t very of the speech that ronald reagan gave. and it was contested and ronald reagan didn't win but he set the framework that he was the next the nextas going to be nomination. the

i'm so proud of you guys. [cheering] if you know anything about hoosiers, you know we like to suit up and compete. we play to win. that is why i joined this campaign in a heartbeat. you have nominated a man for president who never quits, who never backs down, a fighter, a winner. until now he has had to do it all by himself against all odds, but this week, with this united on november 8, i know we will elect donald trump to be the 45th president of the united states of america. [cheering]
10:48 pm
we will win because we are running on the issues facing this country. and because we are leveling with the american people about the stakes and the choice. the american people are tired of being told. they're tired of being told that this is as good as it gets. tired of hearing politicians in both parties tell us that we will get to that tomorrow while we pile a mountain range of debt on our children and grand children. say, nald reagan used to tired of being told that a little intellectual elite can plan our lives better than we can plan them for ourselves. [cheering] in the end, this election comes down to just two names on the ballot so let's resolve here and now that hillary clinton will
10:49 pm
never become president of the united states of america. [cheering] hillary clinton essentially offers a third obama term. the role is perfect for her. she championed obamacare because years earlier she had all but invented it. the national debt it has nearly doubled in the eight years and her only answer is to keep borrowing and spending. like the president, she thinks the path to eight road economy is more taxes and more regulation and more government. >> boo! >> they tell us this economy is the best that we can do. nowhere near the best we

can do. it is the best that they can do. [cheering] let me tell you, i know firsthand, it does not like -- have to be like this. in my home state of indiana, we prove every day that you can build a growing economy on evenced budgets, low taxes while making record investments in education and roads and health care. [cheering] you know, indiana is a state that works because conservative principles work every time you put them into practice. [cheering]
10:51 pm
today, while the nation suffers under the weight of $19 trillion, with indian have a $2 billion surplus. the highs credit nation in the nation in that we have cut taxes every year since i became governor four years ago. [cheering] we have your state employees than when i took office and business is large and small have created nearly 150 -- 150,000 new jobs. that is what you can do with commonsense republican leadership and that is exactly what the no-nonsense leadership of donald trump will bring to be white house. [cheering]

donald trump gets it. in a game usually reserved for talkers. when donald trump does is talking, he does not tiptoe around the thousand new rules of political correctness. he is his own man. distantly american. where else would independent spirit i can find a following than the land of the free and the home of the brave? [cheering] he is tough. he perseveres. he has gone about as far as you can go in business but he has never turned his back on the working men and women who make this country grow. [cheering] these are the true measures of our nominee. chosen by the voters as the right man for these times. this is the outsider, my running mate. turned a longshot campaign into a movement. party, the other idea was to present the exact opposite of a medical outsider, the exact opposite of calculating truth teller, then on that score you have to hand it to the democratic establishment, they outdid themselves this time. [cheering] as a very moment when america is crying out for something new and
10:57 pm
haserent, the other party answered with a stale agenda and the most predictable of names, people in both parties are restless for change, ready to break free from old patterns in washington and democrats are about to anoint someone who represents everything this country is tired of. you know, hillary clinton once a better title and i would too if i was already america's secretary of the status quo. [cheering] the toys could not be more clear. americans can elect someone who literally personifies the failed establishment in washington dc or we can choose a leader who will fight every day to make america great again. [cheering] it is change versus status quo. my fellow republicans, when donald trump becomes president
10:58 pm
of the united states, the change will be huge. [cheering] for years we have had fun that the problems in america that talked to death in washington dc, but they never get solved. they even get worse. we have seen entire stretches of our country christian off not buy bad economic policies in ways that are deeply unfair. we see relentless mandate from the executive branch. it seems like no aspect of our lives is too small for the present administration to supervise and no provision of the constitution is too large for them to ignore.
10:59 pm
[cheering] meanwhile, we have seen borders that go on respected, a military diminished, promise after reading promise to our veterans probably forgotten. that donald trump came along. [cheering] started saying what practically everybody was thinking anyway. that our leaders need to be stronger. under donald trump, our deals will be smarter, our soldiers will have what they need and our veterans will have what they aren't. we will secure our borders to nation and we will be more serious and when we do, this nation will start running again. [cheering] winning again. [cheering] you know, that is the message
11:00 pm
that men and women of both parties have been longing to hear. none of us should think for one second that this will be easy. the outcome of the selection depends on us and how we contend with an incredible onslaught that is coming our way. this will not be america's first glimpse at the clinton machine. as bernie sanders can tell you. this time around, she will have the press to have her work order. >> boo! the good news is that it will not be nearly enough. not against a candidate who captures the attention of the country the way donald trump has. [cheering] on issue by issue, he and i will take our case to the voters.
11:01 pm
looking out the failures of the obama-clinton agenda and showing a better way. we will win the hearts and minds of the american people with an agenda for a stronger and more prosperous america. [cheering] now, the establishment in washington dc thinks it is only a narrow range of voters who are giving donald trump a serious look, but i can tell you firsthand, there are a lot of americans who feel like democrat politicians have taken them for granted. it is union members who don't want a president who promises to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business. [cheering]
11:02 pm
those miners won an american energy policy and they know that donald trump digs coal. [cheering] it is african-americans who remember generations of hollow promises about safe streets and better schools and they know donald trump will fight for equal opportunity and he loves educational choice. [cheering] it is hispanic americans who respect the law, what jobs and opportunities for their families who know that donald trump will uphold the law and get this economy moving for every american. [cheering]
11:03 pm
the party of lincoln was founded on equality and opportunity. during these difficult days, it agenda our party and our that opens the doors for every american to succeed and prosper in this land. [cheering] in so many ways, the democratic party has abandoned those it used to protect. maybe they have become too entrenched in power. so comfortable at times that the list patients with the normal legislative process. to imposeuch simpler their values by executive order or court action and make no mistake about it, hillary clinton has a big ideas along those lines. >> boo! >> as this election approaches,

your time, from the texas delegation. susan: thank you, steve. appreciate it. this was mike pence's big night and our twitter feed and colors are mostly about ted cruz. upstaging what the campaign would hope would be the big event of the night. here's a supporter of ted cruz, surprised to shut up after being called a liar and having his wife and that attack. -- dad attacked. next up is tony from kansas. republican. >> i just wanted to say that i'm not -- have not watched any convention before but i've never seen such a time in our nation or a lot of people have never paid attention and need to pay attention. i went to say thank you for c-span for offering coverage
11:49 pm
that is not slated in any way. you're are letting the people speak and relating -- letting the is a play and not injecting your comments or opinions. i did serve a few other channels and they would break through and start making comments when it was a time when we needed to be listening and hearing what the speakers had to say. i just wanted to give a shout out for doing such a good job on unbiased coverage. susan: becky so much and let me think -- take the opportunity to to the crew here cleveland and all the folks back in c-span headquarters. then we moved to philadelphia of pick up with coverage monday-thursday of the democratic national convention live gavel-to-gavel everything night on the network. next is a tweet from rocky sanchez who says i'm proud of ted cruz for standing behind his

principles. the state plates was just for trump who hijacked the party. next is a call. marty from morphological independent. >> i would like to say that number one, we have been a donald trump fan ever since he started. he is a businessman, he knows wello run a business very and i believe he will surround himself with people that will advise him on any of the matters. mike pence, we were extremely impressed with him. his face and family and what he has done for the state of indiana. ted cruz, on the other hand, i had high hopes for him in the future, but i was extremely disappointed by his lack of support to unite the republican party.
11:51 pm
we are a retired military family. heldry is, is to be accountable for everything that she has done. she has not supported our military, nor does he support our men in blue that protect our communities every day. the other thing i would like to say is thank you for c-span for your coverage. it has been phenomenal and i was extremely happy to see the mainstream media called out reportingrther unfair throughout this whole primary. that is all i have to say and thank you very much. susan: thank you. next up is tony, fort washington . democrat. [indiscernible]
11:52 pm
susan: are you there, we have a that connection? >> yes, can you hear me. susan: go ahead. >> first of all, i would like to thank c-span. as a democrat, i have been watching this convention from the very beginning. i will say, i've been waking for specifics, i've heard that make america great again. but to my opinion, it has never stopped from being great. i would also like to say on behalf of of ted cruz, not in the sense of the fence, but benefits of people that want to criticize him, look at all the other people that did not show. all the people from the status quo per se the republican party that do not show. at least this man did show up and i truly believe that instead
11:53 pm
cruz, itizing ted donald trump had won the primary, he needs to be the bigger person and apologize publicly to this man for calling out his family, to be able to show a picture of his wife, a picture of ted cruz and his wife man would to -- what not be defending his family? when you want to sit there and criticize ted cruz, the man had enough golf to take it show up -- and -- gull and show up, at least it showed that he had in my opinion trying to reach out. tell me how many times donald trump had tried to reach out to ted cruz. tell me how may times donald trump has said, this was the primary, i'm sorry what i said about your family, sorry what i said about you calling you a liar, you can ask someone to the endorser when all you did was
11:54 pm
criticize him and i know it is primaries in running for election and things will be said, but if you want the party to come together, the donald trump should be the bigger for those apologize comments. those are hurtful comments. anyone sitting up your calling in and thing i'm disappointed in him, put the shoe underfoot. if i were to call your wife or your husband out or your kids or family member and see how well you would receive that. susan: thank you. democrat watching us. steve is on the floor once again. i'm with jenna johnson, part of the washington post team. what a night. >> that is one way of saying it. i don't think either of us predicted what was going to happen here tonight. and what we witnessed. steve: imagine what your editors will be putting front page, mike
11:55 pm
cruz?and or ted be mikeis supposed to pence is night. this is supposed to be the big coming out, his introduction to the country. but ted cruz is the big story. he took the stage, huge applause. this place was on its feet applauding him and as he left the stage, they were doing him. booing him. this marked a major moment in the history of the party. it's is that even the donald trump is not the nominee, not everyone is on board. there is not whole unity. steve: as i was coming into the hall, haley barbour, former chair of the rnc, for mississippi governor was shaking her head and said he was disgusted. what do you think is happening within the gop establishment? do you think they knew that ted cruz was not going to endorse donald trump?
11:56 pm
>> ted cruz's speech was a huge secret to the last minute. this morning, palmetto fort -- paul manafort was saying if he did not know that ted cruz would endorse him or not. he had not seen the speech. there was this feeling that if he was good to endorse, if it was going to happen, it probably would have known about it about then. the speech staff came through at the last minute and a lot of people are upset. there is disagreement about whether he should have gotten up there and given that speaker donald trump said a tweet a couple minutes ago very unhappy about what happened but putting out that ted cruz got a lot of boos. steve: he came into the hall as ted cruz was finishing the speech. do you think he knew what was going to happen? >> on try to figure out who knew what when.
11:57 pm
from what i'm gathering out, there was at least a little bit of a heads up. steve: indiana governor mike pence. he was a surprise pick initially, how did he did tonight? >> he did really well. if everyone was not talking to each other about what ted cruz had just said and what had just happened with that, mike pence is someone that a lot of americans don't know. they had been googling him this week. in conservative circles, they know it really well in what he brings to trump are the things that some companies not to he manages to get through interviews without making his. he can stick to it script. he can speak soothingly to conservatives telling them that this guy is ok, i'm behind them, you can get behind him also. steve: one more night of the convention. how is it going for the republicans? >> this convention was supposed
11:58 pm
to be about bringing the party together. making him the official nominee so that there would be no more chances of challenging his nomination. and getting everyone together and it, the first night, donald trump came out on stage to we are the champions, kind of beateng about having fellow republican senate primary. that same night he had gone on fox news to complain about ohio governor john kasich not showing up to the convention. then we had ted cruz tonight given what sounded like what he would have said if he was accepting the nomination this week and not endorsing donald trump. sure there is community that is happening, some things that are happening, but in an arena like this starts booing, it is not a good sign. steve: any insight into what donald trump was a tomorrow? --
11:59 pm
was a tomorrow -- will say tomorrow? >> great question, i stopped predicting. his theme is making america one again. he has set a negative tone on the campaign trail and there has been a doom and gloom feel to this convention. a lot of heavy topics, the sky is falling, the world is exploding, type rhetoric. it will be interesting to see if he can come in with a fresh, new methods. be one that is more positive. it will be interesting to see if he will stop talking about all of his primary wins and start focusing on the general election . the nose. we will see what happens. steve: we deliver your story in the paper tomorrow. thank you. back to you, susan. susan: we will return to your comments on night three of the

republican national convention. mark davis takes us in a different direction. he must to talk about eric come speech. eric come speech was amazing. i felt what he said about his dad in my heart. as a dad, it gave me a drive and hope. next is a call from jimmy in california. -- craig. i'm sorry, i apologize. craig is gone. we will move to jimmy in chicago. independent. >> good afternoon. thank you for taking my call. i do not have a party affiliation, but i wanted to say that going off mr. gingrich's speech, and the former clinton administration, with respect to islamic terrorism, decided to bomb the innocent country of serbia to support bin laden and in turn, he returned the favor by causing a major
