7:33 am
[inaudible] >> quiet so far this morning in cleveland. we'll check back in live later on on c-span as we get set for the final night of the republican national convention in cleveland and look ahead to the democratic convention next week. in fact, we talk with democratic national committee chairman congressman debbie wassermann schultz by phone about the protests that happened and all of this ahead of next week's convention for the democrats in philadelphia. >> the democratic national committee, representative debbie wassermann schultz. thanks very much for being with
7:34 am
us. debbie: welcome, my pleasure. host: how much of this convention have you been watching in cleveland? debbie: quite a bit of it, enough to see how divisive and venomous the rhetoric has been coming from their stage and enough to see how uncomfortable ryan was. so much so he was really unable to wholeheartedly embrace or support tonled trump or even speak his name more than twice during his remarks. you can see throughout the whole tone and tenor of the convention that they really are training all their messaging against hillary clinton and really doing nothing to lay out their own vision. yesterday was the theme of make america work again. nd they laid absolutely no policy out on how they would create jobs or do anything to
7:35 am
continue to move our economy forward and that will be in stark contrast to what we see in philadelphia with our convention. which is what i want to follow up on congresswoman, as you see what they've been talking about this week, are you tweaking changing, taking a second look at how it will unfold in philadelphia? debbie: we've been preparing all along to lay out hillary clinton and the democrats visions or how to continue to move our economy forward, to build on the economic progress we've been able to make under barack obama. you know, we came out of the worst economic crisis since the great depression and really was caused by the republican economic policies to focus on taking care of people at the very top at the expense of the middle class, and we know that we've made progress but we need to really help people feel that they're on more firm ground and make sure the economy works for everyone. and that's the theme that you'll see running through our entire convention.
7:36 am
you'll hear our speakers, a wide, kid verse array -- wide, diverse array and talk about the virtues of hillary clinton and what a president she'll make but clearly lay out the policies and vision and proposal the democratic parties support and that's not what is going on. actually, our hall will be full unlike the republican convention in which they've struggled to fill the seats in their hall because the donald trump brand is so toxic. host: will bernie sanders have a primetime slot? debbie: he'll be speaking on monday evening, "believe it's primetime. the times haven't been announced yet but absolutely, senator standers will kick off our convention. and finally, congresswoman, let me ask you about your home state of florida because hillary clinton will be in florida on friday and a lot of speculation her running mate will offensive board announced either friday or saturday.
7:37 am
any insights into the time line? debbie: we're thrilled secretary clinton will come to florida and doing a swing through tampa, orlando and south florida as well and you know, she's in the final stages of making a decision about who the vice president will be and i don't think there has been any decisions where that will take place but it's certainly going to be in dramatic contrast to the ambivalent and buyer's remorse donald trump appears to have and certainly will be announcing it in more than just tweets. host: representative debbie wassermann schultz. you have a busy week. see you next week. thanks for your time. we appreciate it. >> back on the final day of the republican national convention, this morning texas senator ted cruz, once a republican candidate, was the main speaker at the texas delegation breakfast. jonathan martin tweets he got a
7:38 am
warm reception with chants of "ted, ted" despite controversy over last night's convention speech where he congratulated donald trump for his nomination win but never endorsed the candidate. during this morning's comments, senator cruz told the delegation his pledge to support the winner was not a promise to be, quote, a servile puppy dog to support somebody who attacked his wife, end quote. that led to a protest in the texas delegation. lisa mascaro told him, it's not about heidi or rafael cruz, his father, the texas delegation tells ted cruz, but the country as the room arips with chants of "u.s.a., u.s.a." we'll show you senator cruz's comments from this morning but first his entire 20-minute speech from last night's meeting of the republican national convention. s time to w. [applause] >> please welcome united states senator ted cruz of texas. cruz. [applause]
7:40 am
heidi and i are so honored to join you here in cleveland where lebron james just led an incredible comeback victory. and i am convinced, america is going to come back, too. i want to congratulate donald trump on winning the nomination last night. [applause] sen. cruz: and like each of you, i want to see the principles of that our party believes prevail in november. [applause]
7:41 am
conventions are times of excitement, but given the events of the last few weeks, i hope you will allow me a moment to talk to you about what is really at stake. just two weeks ago, a nine-year-old girl named caroline was having a carefree texas summer, swimming in the pool, playing with friends, doing all of the things a happy child might do. like most children, she relied upon the love that she received from her mom, heidi, and her dad, a police sergeant named michael smith. that is, until he became one of the five police officers gunned down in dallas. murdered,r father was caroline gave him a hug and a kiss as he left for work. dadas they parted, her
7:42 am
asked before. timeif this is the last you ever kiss or hug me? later, as she thought of her fallen father, and that last heartbreaking hug, caroline broke down in tears. how could anything ever be ok again? michael smith was a former army ranger who spent decades with the dallas police department. i have no idea who he voted for in the last election or what he thought about this one. but his life was a testament to devotion. [applause]
7:43 am
sen. cruz: he protected the very protesters who mocked him because he loved his country and his fellow man. his work gave new meaning to that line from literature, to die of love is to live by it. [applause] as i thought about what i wanted to say tonight, onhael smith's story weight my heart, maybe that is because his daughter caroline is about the same age as my eldest daughter, and happens to share the same name. ay be it is because i saw video of that dear, sweet child choking back sobs as she remembered her daddy's last question to her. maybe it is because we live in a world where so many others that had their lives destroyed by evil in places like orlando and
7:44 am
rouge.nd nice and baton maybe it is because of the simple question itself, what if this, right now, is our last time? our last moment to do something for our families and our country? did we live up to the values we say we believe? did we do all we really could? that is really what election should be about. that is why you and millions like you devoted so much time and sacrifice to this campaign. we are fighting not for one particular candidate or one of usgn, but because each wants to be able to tell our kids and grandkids our own our best, that we did for their future and our country.
7:45 am
[applause] [chanting usa] america is more than just a land mass between two oceans. america is an idea, a simple but powerful idea. freedom matters. [applause] sen. cruz: for much of human history, government power has been the unavoidable constant in life. government decrees and the people obey. but not here. queen, we king or have no dictator, we the people constrain government. [applause]
7:46 am
sen. cruz: our nation is exceptional because it was built on the five most beautiful and powerful words in the english free.ge, i want to be [applause] sen. cruz: never has that message been more needed than today. we stand here tonight, a nation divided. partisan rancor, anger, and even hatred are tearing america apart. are furious, rightly furious at a political establishment that cynically breaks its promises and then ignores the will of the people. [applause]
7:47 am
sen. cruz: we have to do better, we owe our fallen heroes more than that. [applause] of course, obama and clinton will also tell you that they care about our children's future. and i want to believe them. but there is a profound parties' in our two vision for the future. [applause] sen. cruz: there is is the party team, hinks isis is a jv that response to the death of americans in benghazi by asking, what difference does it make? and thinks it is possible to
7:48 am
make a deal with iran which celebrates its holidays, death to america day, and death to israel day. [booing] friends, this is madness. president obama is a man who does everything backwards. obeynts to close one-time and open upo bay our borders. he exports jobs and imports terrorists. enough is enough. and i am here to tell you there is a better vision for our future, a return to freedom.
7:49 am
on education, your freedom to choose your child's education, even if you're not as rich as hillary clinton or barack obama. [applause] on health care, your freedom to choose your own doctor without obamacare. [applause] on taxes, your freedom to provide for your family without the irs beating down your door. [applause] internet, keep it free from taxes, free from
7:50 am
regulation, and do not give it away to russia and china. [applause] sen. cruz: freedom means free speech, not politically correct spaces. [applause] sen. cruz: freedom means religious freedom, whether your christian or jew, muslim or atheist. [applause] whether you're gay or straight, the bill of rights protects the rights of all of us to live according to our conscience. freedom means the right to keep
7:51 am
and bear arms and protect your family. freedom means that every human life is precious and must be protected. [applause] freedom means supreme court justices who do not dictate all of the, but instead, follow the constitution. -- the do not dictate policy, but instead, follow the constitution. and freedom means recognizing that our constitution allows states to choose policies that reflect local values.
7:52 am
colorado might decide something different than texas. york, different than iowa. that is the way it is supposed to be, diversity. [applause] sen. cruz: if not, what is the point of having states to begin with? [applause] [chanting usa] sen. cruz: hillary clinton believes government should make virtually every choice in your life. [booing] sen. cruz: education, health care, marriage, speech, all dictated out of washington.
7:53 am
but something powerful is happening. we have seen it in both parties. we have seen it in the united kingdom, unprecedented brexit vote to leave the european union. [applause] sen. cruz: voters are overwhelmingly rejecting the political establishment and overwhelmingly rejecting the government. [applause] sen. cruz: that is a profound of, and it is one earned by each and every one of you. people are fed up with politicians who don't listen to them, fed up with the corrupt system that benefits the elites instead of working men and women. [applause]
7:54 am
sen. cruz: we deserve an immigration system that puts america first, and yes, builds a wall to keep america safe. [applause] sen. cruz: the government that stops admitting isis terrorists as refugees. [applause] sen. cruz: we deserve a trade policies that put the interests of american farmers and manufacturing jobs over the for thenterests
7:55 am
lobbyists. [applause] and if we stand together and choose freedom, our future will be brighter. freedom will bring back jobs and raise wages. freedom of will lift people out of dependency to the dignity of work. [applause] we can do this. 47 years ago, to this day, america but the very first man on the moon. [applause] sen. cruz: that was the power of freedom. our party, the republican party, was founded to defeat slavery. [applause]
7:56 am
sen. cruz: abraham lincoln, the first republican president, signed the emancipation proclamation. [applause] together, we passed the civil rights act, and together, we thought to eliminate jim crow laws. [applause] sen. cruz: that is our collective legacy, although the media will never share it with you. those were fights for freedom, and so is this. sergeant michael smith stood up to protect our freedom, so do
7:57 am
the soldiers and sailors and airmen and marines every day, fighting radical islamic terrorism. [applause] [chanting usa] sen. cruz: and so did the family of alton sterling, who bravely called to end the violence. [applause] sen. cruz: so did the families of those murdered at the charleston emmanuel church over forgave that hateful, bigoted murderer. [applause] we. cruz: and so can
7:58 am
we deserve leaders who stand for principles, the unite us all behind shared values, who cast aside anger for love. that is the standard we should expect from everybody. listening, please, do not stay home in november. [applause] sen. cruz: if you love our country, and love your children as much as i know that you do, stand and speak and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you andt to defend our freedom
7:59 am
8:00 am
millions to achieve their dreams. mom, the first and her family to go to college, and my dad, who is here tonight, who fled prison and torture in cuba, coming to texas with just $100 sewn into his underwear. love that i hope will bring comfort to a grieving nine-year-old girl in dallas. her to willing, propel move forward and a dream and soar and make her daddy proud. we must make the most of our toents to fight for freedom, protect our god-given rights, -- even with those with
8:01 am
whom we do not agree, so that when we are old and gray, and when our work is done and we give those we love one final kiss goodbye, we will be able to and i wasom matters part of something beautiful. [applause] sen. cruz: the case we have to the to the american people, case each person in this room has to make to the american people, is to commit to each of them that we will defend freedom and be faithful to the constitution.
8:02 am
[applause] sen. cruz: we will unite the party, we will unite the country, by standing together for shared values by standing for liberty. god bless each and every one of you, and god bless the united states of america. [applause] on last night plus speech, politico tweets the conservative bomb thrower, ted cruz, reminding the gop he's not in it to make friends. reaction this morning from trump campaign manager to last night -- speech. stop
8:03 am
mr. cruz and mr. trump spoke on the phone and mr. would be nom there explicit endorsement. so why was the trump campaign surprised? the primarytold us goal of this convention is to unify the party. does it feel more or less unified after cruz was food office stage and his wife had to be protected by security leaving the arena? the second part of the question is the party is unified. there were a number of delegates who disagreed with what senator cruz did, including his home state of texas. they said that this was not right and they are supporting the trump-pence ticket. millions of people watching the convention, we think it became very clear to everybody that donald trump has been
8:04 am
magnanimous in his outreach program. he invited all the presidential candidates to participate. he felt they had gone through a crucible of a campaign and had the right to speech and there were no conditions put on any of them. we never said there were conditions. everyone said they support the ticket or endorsed the ticket. to slipator cruz chose away with something and was the only speech at the convention that was poorly received in the hall. that was senator cruz's decision. mr. trump invited him because he wanted him to have the opportunity to speak. as to their obligations, everybody knew about the pledges, what obligation that put on them and how they interpreted the obligation. senator cruz, district constitutionalist, chose not to
8:05 am
go with the pledge that he signed. so as far as the contract is concerned, he was in violation. governor ricks perry says that cruz did not get the memo on gop unity. thediscussion continuing on texas breakfast. texas delegates argue at a meeting that was lively and heated at times stop ted cruz spoke to the gathering this morning. here is a look. [applause] : there were folks at the convention who were not happy as it. i will say something to the folks here. >> get out. senator cruz: everybody here got
8:06 am
involved in politics because we believe in something. innk back when you first got the political process and first started affording a candidate and first ran for office. why is it that you did it? what is it about? what are you fighting for? one of the things i love -- thank you, sir, god bless you. one of the things i love about this texas delegation is that these are women and men of rentable. -- of principle. [applause] it has been the greatest privilege of my life to represent each of you in the united states senate. when i was sworn in as senator,
8:07 am
i took a nose, and both to defend the constitution -- and oh to defend the constitution. that is an obligation i take very seriously. honors an oath i tend to every single day. -- intend to honor every single day. [applause] constitution, the i have an obligation to every every manman here and and woman in the state of texas. i work for you. and you haveu every right and i would say even a duty to hold me accountable. that is why i'm here this morning. it would have in the easiest thing in the world to turn tail and run. that ain't going to happen. [applause]
8:08 am
i suspect most, if not all of you understand these folks holding cameras are not our friends. they are not here because they want to have a beer with you. because theyhere are planning to vote republican in november. so there is no story they want than republicans in disarray, convention on fire, everything going bad. that's what they are going to write. notice that every night, that is going to be the story. it is up to us to determine whether it is true or not.
8:09 am
i think the american people are watching what we do and not what they say. [applause] you last night, when i address the convention, i address the convention because donald trump asked me to. when donald asked me to, he did not ask me to endorse and three days ago, i talked to him on the phone and told him i'm not going to endorse you. i'm happy tosir, answer that but i am not going to engage in a screaming fight. i'm going to do questions and answers right now. what i wanted to do last night was layout as i believe we should stand for as republicans. [applause] in that speech last night, i did
8:10 am
not say a single negative word about donald trump. [applause] this morning and going forward, i don't intend to say negative things about donald trump. [applause] the media would love me to. promise you every question when i stepped off the stage is going to be please say something about donald trump. it makes good news. what i did say is all of us should believe and why all of us got into politics in the first place. i started this speech by congratulating donald on winning the a nomination by name. i encouraged folks here and at home that we deserve leaders who stand for principle, who will do what they say, and i
8:11 am
made a particular point to address conservatives at home. i assume there is a reason the trump campaign wanted me to speak. several hourseech before i was going to speak and they knew exactly what i was going to say. i think they believed my delivering that message would encourage people to come out and vote and they believed it would help. if not, i was perfectly happy to get on a plane and go home. but in that speech last night, i asked conservatives at home, i asked americans at home do not stay home in november. [applause] i laid out a standard and said we should vote for candidates that you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the constitution. [applause] i'm going to tell you right now
8:12 am
that is a standard i expect to be applied to me. i expect to be applied to every candidate on the ballot from president down to dogcatcher. [applause] this is not just a team sport. we don't just put on red jerseys were blue jerseys and say yeah a. this is about intervals and ideas, about standing for what we believe in. [applause] i have to say it was somewhat dismaying- somewhat that donald's against partisans down front, when they heard you should vote for someone you can
8:13 am
trust to defend our freedom, defend the constitution, immediately, they began doing -- .egan booing that is a little bit troubling, what they are saying. [applause] reminded of an old story of a man in the middle of a huge that companyets case and it means everything to him and his lawyer called at the end of the trial and said justice prevailed. the client said appeal immediately. [laughter] had it exactly right. laidid the standard ted out, who will defend freedom, who will defend the constitution, he said donald trump is the only candidate that meets that standard.
8:14 am
-- [applause] if we want to win this election, that is the only way we are winning this election. [applause] we are going to win this election i've making the case to the american people. we are not going to win this election by yelling and screaming and attacking people. [applause] with that, i'm happy to answer any and all of your questions. >> are you going to vote for trump? [applause] senator cruz: thank you for your
8:15 am
question and i will answer it the same way i've answered it every time our friends in the press have answered it. i'm doing what millions of americans are doing. , andatching, i'm listening as i told you last night, the standard i intend to apply is which candidate i trust to defend our freedom and be faithful to the constitution. i can tell you i'm not voting for hillary. [applause] hillary fails that test profoundly and i will note a significant part of my speech last night was laying out the incredible damage of hillary clinton's vision. y'all may recall when i ran for senate, a lot of people worked three hard in that
8:16 am
race. [applause] there were a lot of folks in that race that said you've got to vote for the lieutenant governor. he's next in line, it is his turn, he is next in line. and an awful lot of texans took a different view. i've laid out the standard i'm looking for. i'm going to be listening tonight. i will be listening to donald's speech and how he and the fromign conduct himself here until november. i believe that's what the american people will be doing. to lay to win as i try screamvision is not just and yell and attack as a traitor
8:17 am
anyone who would question our candidates. [applause] i answered it with as much as i'm going to say, which is that tom watching and listening make that decision. when i talk about holding people accountable, i think that applies to all of us. that is what i am doing. i'm watching and listening. the election is not today and i'm listening to the candidate. what i do not intend to do is go out and throw rocks at them. i don't intend to criticize them.
8:18 am
[applause] a voter, like all of us, just to listen and make andbest judgment i can every one of us has to follow our conscience. when friends of mine and supporters of mine are asking what to do, the answer i give to everyone is follow your conscience. do what you believe is right. do what you believe defends your children and this country. [applause] >> [indiscernible]
8:19 am
senator cruz: i appreciate your comments and i have to confess what you said would be easy to do. here arepeople frustrated with politicians that just say anything? [applause] i'm going to answer your question. options ia lot of could have taken that politically would have been a heck of a lot easier. there's option number one, which a whole lot of people took, which is turn tail and run and don't come to the convention. a bunch of people did that. i ain't one of them. [applause]
8:20 am
there is another option. let me tell you the politically easy option. pledgeo stand up and your allegiance to whoever the party leader might be no matter what will stop if you are an elected official, that's the right political outcome. i will tell you something, i'm not going to lie to you. what i said last night is what i believe. -- yes [applause] >> [indiscernible] senator cruz: your point is support the party, the republican party. answerm happy to questions but i'm not going to
8:21 am
engage in a screaming match. i believe in treating people with civility and respect. [applause] when it comes to supporting the party, number one, the four years i have been in office, there were an awful lot of elected officials in this room across the party and across the country. i have traveled the country, troubled the state of texas raising money for, fighting to help elect republicans. but let me be very clear. this is not a social club. simply reagan gave a powerful speech 40 years ago where he said the republican party is not a fraternal order. it's not just my club. we either stand for shared runcible's or we are not worth anything. [applause]
8:22 am
let me ask folks here a related question. how many of y'all would like to see more leaders stand up to john boehner and mitch mcconnell? [applause] i want to point out to folks here you are seeing and you saw last night why so few elected leaders do. up toe anytime you stand john boehner and mitch mcconnell, leadership screams support the team, you are a republican, we are leadership, sit down, shut up, just support the team and if that is the price, i ain't going to do it will stop i'm going to honor the commitment i made to the voters.
8:23 am
[applause] >> thank you for putting your hat in the ring. give advice toto , donald trump, what would you tell him to attract the hard constitutionalists to rally around his banner? : i think that's a fabulous question and that's what i endeavor to do in every speech. that was the speech. outline for donald trump and
8:24 am
their campaign, this is how you win. [applause] , readingon twitter articles online and one of them had a word cloud of last night versus prior nights. dominantcloud, the word was 50 times bigger than any other word was the word freedom. [applause] 's word cloud,t can anyone guess with the dominant word was? trump. if we go to november and the dominant word the voters here is trump or for that matter if the dominant word is hillary or e-mail server, we are going to lose. [applause] you want to know how we win? we will win if the dominant message the voters here is freedom.
8:25 am
8:26 am
question. the rules we have are not an accident. we have those rules because people in power want those rules. when people in power right rules , they were designed to protect and perpetuate those in power. on the fights that happened in the rules committee, i have consciously stayed out of there. i was not in cleveland. i did not arrive until that fight was over. i understand a lot of delegates fought tacitly -- pop -- passionately from the ground. pickingans ought to be the republican nominee. [applause]
8:27 am
as a voter, i think reforms that enhance the abilities of republicans, reforms that enhance the grassroots are beneficial reforms. so not any particular rules issue, i trust the delegates and i trust you to make those determinations. i will say when those in power use raw power to try to stifle events, that is not sitting of the party founded by abraham lincoln. [applause] two more questions. >> [inaudible]
8:28 am
we are so upset the trump people moved you. i want to apologize for what they did to you. several of the never trump people say we should write your name in. i think that's a vote for hillary. what is your opinion because we will take direction from you. senator cruz: thank you for the question. thank you for the encouragement and thank you for standing for israel as well. not encouraging anybody to write my name in. that is not something i suggest anybody do.
8:29 am
8:30 am
[applause] senator cruz: thank you, ma'am and thank you for speaking from your heart. i will tell you when i stood on that debate stage, they asked every candidate there, if you win would you support the nominee. i raised my hand enthusiastically with full intention of doing exactly that and i will tell you the day that pledge was abrogated. the day that pledge was abrogated was the day this became personal. and i'm not going to get into criticizing or attacking donald trump, but i will give you this response.
8:31 am
i'm not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father. [applause] and that pledge was not a blanket commitment that if you go and slander and attack heidi nonethelessng to come like a servile puppy dog and say thank you very much for maligning my wife and maligning my father. [applause] and i will note you are making crying signs in the back, i will note that you might have a similar view. if someone were attacking your wife. i hope you would. i hope you would.
8:32 am
this is not politics. i will tell the truth. i will not malign, i will not will tell the truth. it's not a game, it's not politics. right and wrong matters. we have not abandoned who we are in this country. no, sir, i do not believe that is correct. if anyone here thinks that i was conventionme to this -- thank you, sir. if anyone thinks i was eager to come to this convention and give a speech laying out, supporting a great many policy positions layingt by donald trump,
8:33 am
out why hillary clinton is utterly unfit to be president despite the fact that neither he nor his campaign have taken a back a word they have said about my family, that was not something i was happy to do. it was something i thought i had an obligation to do. i have an obligation to stand and speak and i will say what does it say when you stand up andsay vote your conscience rabid supporters of our nominee begin screaming what a horrible thing to say? [applause] case to themake the american people that voting for our party's nominee is consistent with voting your conscience, consistent with being faithful to the constitution, than we are not going to win and we don't deserve to win.
8:34 am
8:35 am
it is about the united states of america. [applause] [chanting "usa, usa"] : i agree in fat at lee that it is about the united states. i will point out that every day in the senate, i have spent every waking moment fighting for you, country, fighting for fighting to honor promises i way, there is a reason why others don't. the reaction in washington is you get screamed and hollered down when you follow your
8:36 am
commitments. anyway, andou do it that is what i did last night. because last night, what i laid out last night was not a speech. last night was a speech focused entirely on the united states of america, on a path forward. our country is at the edge of a precipice. of losing therisk greatest country in the history of the world and my soul cries at where this country is, and what we are doing to the freedom of our kids and grandkids. and what i said last night is what i believe is the only path to saving this country and it is not simply blindly chanting a name and yelling down dissenters. i believe in free speech. let me point out, by the way,
8:37 am
can anyone imagine our nominee standing in front of voters asking questions -- answering questions like this. day. this to you every i'm going to answer the question -- even fellows who yell and scream insults, you have a right under the first amendment and i'm going to defend your rights even to insult me. [applause] you said it's about the united states of america, i can tell you this. if we don't defend freedom and the con's to show, and if we thet make the case to american people that our candidate can be trusted to defend freedom and the const touche and, we will lose and we will deserve to lose. my speech last night was entirely about this country and

that is a live picture there from cleveland. we will check back in on the final day of the republican national convention with a look at some of the media coverage, including an election confession website. >> one of the many booths here in cleveland is the decision -- how did this come about? let's we have a lot of people being interviewed about how they feel about the election. they may not be sharing their true feelings about how they feel about the election, though everyone's feelings about the areidates and the country all anonymous. >> everything from this is a circus to this is nuts. >> people write that this is
8:41 am
that they are depressed, they want to separate from their significant others over who they are voting for. people saying they cried when jeb bush dropped out. ryane holding out for paul . people saying they don't support trump and they are sad because they have been republicans their whole life. people can submit their confession and send it into a phone number and we are going to all of them. we've gotten over 50,000 commissions -- confessions since we launched. >> what led to this? you just woke up and said i want to do this? coffee shop in new york city and i overheard one of the baristas saying they don't know what they are thinking. the person they were talking to set i like some of trump's

policy positions but i don't want to tell my friends that or share it on social media. there are a lot of people who don't want to share how they really feel with their friends and this is a safe space where people can share how they really feel about the election. >> what has been among the most interesting confessions? we got someone who wrote in that they are part of trump's staff but are not voting for trump. we have had people say they are divorcing there has and or wife. we have someone who said i wish i would have worked harder for jeb bush because this is who we ended up with. escortse said they are trying to see who they can pick up a net is the only reason they have come. >> if they want to do something on video, how do they remain

anonymous? this and we put sunglasses over them. we videotape them and they can remain anonymous. we have people with a silhouette ground so you can't see them at all. >> where do you think this is going to lead? >> i don't know. i'm a digital editor for nbc news and i'm just trying to get to share how they feel about the election and get people aware of different ways we can share information. this is something different and is a way to see how people are really feeling about the election and their true thoughts because it is anonymous. and a brand of nbc news, thank you. cleveland ando the public square area outside the convention center. no protests back and forth, but

the back and forth of ping-pong between indiana state troopers and folks in the square. we will have more looks at cleveland and our preview program getting underway at 5:30 eastern. following the fourth night of the republican national convention in cleveland. speeches include acceptance speeches by donald trump and coverage going underway tonight at 7:20 eastern live on c-span. donald trump will be introduced by his oldest daughter and you see a look at the lineup of people who will be participating. if you missed anything, last night's speeches of ted cruz, mike pence and others come you

can see that on c-span.org and catch that at next week's democratic convention as well. mike pence was nominated last night as the vice presidential candidate and made his acceptance speech before the convention delegates. here it is. >> please welcome the speaker of the house, paul ryan. [applause] rep. ryan: hello my fellow republicans. i could not be more proud of our vice presidential nominee. [applause] i served with this man in the house of representatives. we became very good friends.
8:46 am
i was this man up close. i have seen what he is made up. let me tell you something about mike pence. this is a man of solid character, this is a man who sees public service as a calling, not a career. he has served honorably with great dignity. the results are impressive. this is a man who led the charge to ban earmarks in congress, and he won that fight. [applause] as governor of indiana, he passed the largest income tax cut in state history, he balanced the state budget. this man is a reagan conservative through and through. progrowth, pro-life, pro-strong defense.
8:47 am
most importantly, he is the father of three beautiful children, michael, charlotte, and audrey. he called his wife karen, "the best part of my life." my fellow republicans, the man that you have nominated is a man of faith, a man of conviction, a man you can trust. he comes from the heart of the conservative movement in the heart of america. now, we need to send him and donald trump straight to the white house. [applause] there is no doubt in my mind that he will bring real change to washington. i have every confidence that he will do us all proud. so, ladies and gentlemen, it is my honor to introduce to you the next vice president of the

the bottom of my heart. i am deeply humbled by your confidence, and on behalf of my family, here and gone, i accept your nomination to run and serve as vice president of the united states of america. [applause] and, let me thank speaker paul ryan for that gracious welcome. paul, you're a true friend and a great american leader. paul knows me well, and he knows the introduction i prefer is just a little bit shorter. i'm a christian, a conservative, and a republican, in that order.
8:50 am
you know, i'm new to this campaign. and honestly, i never thought i'd be standing here. i thought i'd be spending this evening with all my friends from the great state of indiana. yet there i was, a few days ago in new york city, with a man who won 37 states, who faced 16 talented opponents and outlasted every one of them, and along the way, brought millions of new voters into the republican party. [applause] gov. pence: he is a man known for a large personality, a colorful style, and lots of charisma. i guess he was just looking for some balance on the ticket.
8:51 am
[applause] for those of you who don't know me, which is most of you, i grew up on the front row of the american dream. my grandfather immigrated to this country. i was raised in a small town in southern indiana, in a big family with a cornfield in the backyard. although we weren't really a political family, the heroes of my youth were president john f. kennedy and the reverend dr. martin luther king jr. [applause] when i was young, i watched my mom and dad build everything that matters. a family, a business, a good name. i was raised to believe in hard work, in faith, and family. my dad, ed pence, was a combat veteran in korea.
8:52 am
dad ran gas stations in our small town and was a great father. if dad were with us today, i have a feeling he would enjoy this moment, and probably be pretty surprised. but, it is such a joy for me to tell you that my mother is here. [applause] would you join me in welcoming the light of my life, my mom, nancy? [applause]
8:53 am
you know, growing up, i actually started in politics in the other party, until i heard the voice and the ideals of the 40th president, and i signed on for the reagan revolution. [applause] but the best thing that ever happened to me, even counting tonight, is that 31 years ago, i married the girl of my dreams, a schoolteacher and artist. she is everything to me. would you welcome my wonderful wife, karen pence? [applause]
8:54 am
and, regardless of any title i will ever hold, the most important job i will ever have is spelled d-a-d. karen and i are blessed. karen and i are blessed to be the parents of the three greatest kids in the world, a writer named charlie, a college student named audrey, and a second lieutenant in the united states marine corps, michael j. pence. i'm so proud of you guys. [applause] gov. pence: if you know anything about hoosiers, you know we like to suit up and compete. we play to win. that is why i joined this campaign in a heartbeat.
8:55 am
you have nominated a man for president who never quits, who never backs down, a fighter, and a winner. until now, he has had to do it all by himself, against all odds. but this week, with this united party, he has backed up, and on november 8, i know we will elect donald trump to be the 45th president of the united states of america. [applause] we will win because we are running on the issues facing this country, and because we are leveling with the american people about the stakes and the choice. the american people are tired of being told. they're tired of being told that this is as good as it gets. they are tired of hearing
8:56 am
politicians in both parties tell us that we will get to that tomorrow while we pile a mountain range of debt on our children and grandchildren. as ronald reagan used to say, they are tired of being told that a little intellectual elite in a far distant capital can plan our lives better for us than we can plan them for ourselves. [applause] in the end, this election comes down to just two names on the ballot, so let's resolve here and now that hillary clinton will never become president of the united states of america. [applause] hillary clinton essentially offers a third obama term.
8:57 am
the role is perfect for her. she championed obamacare because years earlier she had all but invented it. the national debt has nearly doubled in these eight years, and her only answer is to keep borrowing and spending. like the president, she thinks that the path to a growing economy is more taxes and more regulation and more government. they tell us this economy is the best that we can do. economy is more taxes and more it is nowhere near the best we can do. it is just the best that they can do. [applause] i know firsthand, it doesn't have to be like this. in my home state of indiana, we proved firsthand that we could grow the economy on balance budgets, low taxes, even while
8:58 am
making investments in roads and health care. indiana is the state that works because conservative principles work every time you put them into practice. [applause] [chanting] today, while the nation suffers under the weight of $19 trillion in national debt, we in indiana have a $2 billion surplus, the highest credit rating in the nation, even though we've cut taxes every year since i became governor four years ago.
8:59 am
[applause] we have fewer state employees than when i took office, and businesses large and small have created nearly 150,000 new jobs. there is more hoosiers going to work than ever before. that is what you can do with commonsense republican leadership, and that is exactly what the no-nonsense leadership of donald trump will bring to the white house. [applause] donald trump gets it. he is the genuine article. he is a doer in a game usually reserved for talkers. when donald trump starts is talking, he doesn't tiptoe around the 1000 new rules of political correctness. he has his own man, distinctly american.
