future we create for our children and grandchildren. [cheering] this election is about ending the 40-year decline of our middle class. [cheering] reality that 47 million men, women and children live in poverty. it is about understanding that if we do not transform our economy, our younger generation will likely have a lower standard of living then their parents. this election is about ending the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality that we
11:01 pm
have in america today. [cheering] it is not moral, not acceptable and it is not sustainable that now own1/10 of 1% almost as much wealth as the bottom 90%. >> boo! >> or that the top 1% in recent years has earned 85% of all new income. that is unacceptable. that must change. >> boo! abouts election is
11:02 pm
remembering where we were 7 1/2 years ago when president obama came into office after eight years of republican trickle-down economics. [cheering] the republicans want us to forget that as a result of the greed, recklessness and illegal behavior on wall street, our economy was in the worst economic downturn since the great depression. that is where we were. some 800,000 people a month were losing their jobs. 800,000 people. we were running up a record-breaking deficit of $1.4 trillion and the world's financial system was on the
11:03 pm
verge of collapse. that is where we were. we have come a long way in the last 7 1/2 years, and i thank president obama and vice president biden. [cheering] i thank them for their leadership in pulling us out of that terrible recession. yes, we have made progress, but i think we can all agree that much, much more needs to be done. [cheering] this election is about which candidate understands the real problems facing this country and has offered real solutions.
11:04 pm
[cheering] bombast, fear-mongering, name-calling and divisiveness. we need leadership in this country which will improve the lives of working families, the children, the elderly, the sick and the poor. [cheering] we need leadership which brings our people together and makes us stronger. [cheering] not leadership which insults latinos, mexicans, insults muslims and women, african-americans and veterans and seeks to divide us up.
11:05 pm
11:06 pm
election is about a single mother i saw in nevada who, with tears in her eyes, told me that she was scared to death about the future because she and her daughter were not making it on the $10.45 an hour she was earning. this election is about that woman and the millions of other workers in this country who are struggling to survive on totally inadequate wages. [cheering] hillary clinton understands that if someone in this country works
11:07 pm
40 hours a week, that person should not be living in poverty. [cheering] she understands that we must raise the minimum wage to a living wage. [cheering] and she is determined to create millions of new jobs by rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, our roads, bridges, water systems and wastewater plants. [cheering] but her opponent, donald trump, well, he has a very different view. he does not support raising the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, a starvation wage.
11:08 pm
while donald trump believes in yuuuge tax breaks for billionaires, he believes that states should actually have the right to lower the minimum wage below $7.25. brothers and sisters, this overturningabout citizens united. [cheering] citizens united is one of the worst supreme court decisions in the history of our country. that [cheering]
11:09 pm
that decision allows the wealthiest people in america, like the billionaire koch brothers to spend hundreds of millions of dollars buying elections and, in the process, undermine american democracy. >> boo! >> hillary clinton will nominate justices to the supreme court who are prepared to overturn citizens united. [cheering] and end the movement toward oligarchy in this country. her [cheering]
11:10 pm
her supreme court appointments will also defend a woman's right to choose. [cheering] workers' rights, the rights of the lgbtq me to take, the needs of minorities and immigrants and the government's ability to protect our environment. [cheering] if you don't believe this election is important, if you think you can sit it out, take a moment to think about the supreme court justices that donald trump would nominate. and what that would mean to civil liberties, equal rights and the future of our country.
11:11 pm
this election is about the thousands of young people i have met all over the country. [cheering] the thousands i have met who have left college deeply in debt and tragically the many others who cannot afford to go to college. during the primary campaign, secretary clinton and i both focused on this issue but with somewhat different approaches. recently, however, we have come together on a proposal that will revolutionize higher education in america. [cheering] it will guarantee that the
11:12 pm
children of any family in this country with an annual income of $125,000 a year or less, 83% of our population, will be able to go to a public college or university tuition free. [cheering] that proposal also substantially reduces student debt. [cheering] this election is about climate change, the great environmental crisis facing our planet. [cheering]
11:13 pm
and the need to leave this world in a way that is healthy and habitable for our kids and future generations. [cheering] hillary clinton is listening to the scientists who tell us that unless we act boldly and transform our energy system in the very near future, there will be more drought, more floods, more acidification of the oceans, more rising sea levels. she understands that when we do we can create hundreds of thousands of jobs transforming our energy system. [cheering] donald trump? well, like most republicans, he chooses to reject science. he
11:14 pm
>> boo! >> he believes that climate change is a "hoax," no need to address it. hillary clinton understands that a president's job is to worry about future generations, not the profits of the fossil fuel industry. [cheering] this campaign is about moving the united states toward universal health care. [cheering] and reducing the number of people who are uninsured or underinsured. hillary clinton wants to see that all americans have the right to choose a public option in their health care exchange. [cheering] she believes that anyone 55
11:15 pm
or older should be able to opt in to medicare. [cheering] and she wants to see millions more americans gain access to primary health care, dental care, mental health counseling and low-cost prescription drugs through a major expansion of community health centers. [cheering] and what is donald trump's position on health care? no surprise there. same old, same old republican contempt for working families. he wants to abolish the affordable care act, throw 20 million people off of the health insurance and cut medicaid for lower-income americans. >> boo! >> hillary clinton also
11:16 pm
understands that millions of seniors, disabled vets and others are struggling with the outrageously high cost of prescription drugs. and the fact that americans pay the highest prices in the world for their medicine that we use. she knows that medicare must negotiate drug prices with the pharmaceutical industry. [cheering] and that drug companies should not be making billions in profits while one in five americans are unable to afford the medicine they need. the greed of the drug companies must end. [cheering]
11:17 pm
this election is about the leadership we need to pass comprehensive immigration reform and repair a broken criminal justice system. [cheering] it's about making sure that young people in this country are in good schools and at good jobs, not rotting in jail cells. [cheering] hillary clinton understands that we have to invest in education and jobs for our young people, not more jails or incarceration. [cheering] in these stressful times for our country, this election must be about bringing our people
11:18 pm
together, not dividing us up. [cheering] while donald trump is busy insulting one group after another, hillary clinton understands that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. [cheering] yes, we become stronger when black and white, latino, asian american, native american, when all of us stand together. [cheering] yes, we become stronger when men and women, young and old, gay and straight, native born and immigrant fight to create the kind of country we all know we can become. [cheering]
11:19 pm
it is no secret that hillary clinton and i disagree on a number of issues. that's what this campaign has been about. that's what democracy is about. [cheering] but i am happy to tell you that at the democratic platform committee there was a significant coming together between the two campaigns and we produced, by far, the most progressive platform in the history of the democratic party. [cheering] among many other strong provisions, the democratic party now calls for breaking up the major financial institutions on
11:20 pm
11:21 pm
section. session. lame duck [cheering] our job now is to see that strong platform implemented by a democratic-controlled senate. [cheering] by a democratic house and a hillary clinton presidency and . [cheering] and i'm going to do all that i can to make that happen. [cheering] i have known hillary clinton for 25 years. i remember her as a great first
11:22 pm
lady who broke precedent in terms of the role that a first lady was supposed to play as she helped lead the fight for universal health care. i served with her in the united states senate and know her as a fierce advocate for the rights of children. for women and for the disabled. [cheering] hillary clinton will make an outstanding president and i am proud to stand with her here tonight. thank you all very much. [cheering]

we will go to calls in just a few minute. remember, you can also tweak us using our twitter handle at c-span. steve is on the floor ready to hear from delegates. here, wife iswded nelly -- twice as many delegates here then cleveland. we will been with one from -- begin with one from louisiana. your reaction? >> i thought all the speeches were great. michelle reminded us of the great journey of our country and i think bernie today are minded us exactly why we were in this race and the campaign. it is about a vision and that everyone has a common vision and that we need to come together as one family. i was very pleased with everybody tonight. and cory booker told us we need to rest together and stand together to defeat donald trump and that is what i think we will do. >> do think we will see cory booker on the national stage? i think he may be the second
11:34 pm
black president of the united states of america. i'm hoping for it. i think today, he really inspired us all and reminded us exactly of why we are here. why we our purpose and fight for the issues we fight for every day. >> let me a colleague. also from louisiana. give us a sense of the reaction of when senator bernie sanders came inside wells fargo center inc. into the podium? >> it was clear pandemonium. we have been waiting for this moment the entire campaign. for him to lay out the gains he has made over the last year over the course of his campaign, telling us that the things here fighting for have been accepted by the democratic party and hillary has chosen to pick up the badge and carry it forward. and that we need to unite behind her. it is encouraging. i look forward to getting behind her and making sure we have another clinton in the white house to make sure we can continue on the last eight years and make sure that the next years are better than the last
11:35 pm
eight. it is scary having donald trump as president. >> the keynote address by senator elizabeth warren, your reaction? >> she did an acceptable job. -- exceptional job. she showed everyone what america is about. the fact that she was a 19-year-old mother, mary, became successful. that kind of message resonates with a whole bunch of americans. not only just women. >> let me turn to jennifer from pennsylvania. >> i live 10 minutes away. >> let me ask you about the city. the first time since 1948. what has it been like for the city? >> it has been exciting. all sorts of girls around the restaurants and organizations and it has been an energy that we don't feel to this extent as often as we would love to. you have a great location,
11:36 pm
just off the side of the podium. what is it like to be here on the floor and your reaction to the first lady speech. >> i thought the first lady speech was beautiful. i think the most persuasive argument i've heard so far for a vote against trump came for her tonight when she made the point that our children, they look at the untouchables. divide that the president -- the vibe that the president sent off to them everyday and those untouchables are words to describe people, women, people of disability and color, i thought that her argument that not only she and brock are always mindful of what their children are watching, but also what all the children of the nation are watching and the next president will help to shape our children by how they put their foot forward and i think that is probably the most persuasive argument i've heard so far against trump as president. there still divisions between supporters of bernie sanders and hillary clinton? >> i hope the party is coming together. i'm sure there is still probably
11:37 pm
division. there are many people crying on the floor tonight as i speak to you. i hope the party is coming together. i think there were many moments of unity tonight and i think it is very hopeful that we will move over together. delegation from pennsylvania. thank you very much. >> >> thank you. susan, bacteria >>. -- back to you. >> for the first few calls we will listen to democrats. we'll begin with chris from washington. very exciting to watch what happened today. a more progressive than the party, i definitely still don't feel that there's quite enough being done to appeal to our section of the party. , especiallyivided with the pickup tim kaine. i don't feel lots of the values
11:38 pm
have been utilized and pushed for. i don't think it love the platform issues we are seeing this year would have ever come to fruition at the party platform. however, i do appreciate the attempt, especially michelle obama and was the foreign coming to try to capitalize on -- elizabeth warren coming to cap was on the positives. that will work to build party unity. i would still like to see a little bit more. >> thank you. your reaction watching in new orleans. >> i had a chance to watch all of the republican convention as well as the democratic convention and i think that elizabeth warren and cory booker knocked it out of the park. i appreciate the fact that they

are exposing donald trump for the liar and teacher that he is. all the scams of donald trump have not been fixed posed as of yet such as the united states football league. not the closing his taxes, and in addition to that, he is lying about his so-called wealth. he has been bankrupt model times . he is a failure. second of all, the united states of america is not a business. it is a government of the people, by the people and for the people. because of that, he will lose like other hatemongers like george wallace. next up is joe in denver. >> thank you for taking my call. i really enjoyed the convention. , i come from is west africa, the vision of the
11:40 pm
united states, i'm proud of the positive message that was given tonight. wins andat hillary becomes the next president. i do enjoy, especially with elizabeth warren, i love her message and how she was very clear about being positive and encouraging everybody to come together as one. i enjoyed that. i give her 100%. rate. -- great. susan: thank you so much for coming. clintoner said hillary -bernick would have made a much better one. he is the best. he speaks from the heart. steve is back on the floor. steve: with two delegates supporting bernie sanders. let me begin with you. your reaction to your home state
11:41 pm
senator's speech. >> at thought it was great. he hit on all of the platform issues, the policy issues that got him here. he was able to articulate everything clearly. kind of wrap up the campaign to this point and one of the great things about this all process, it is not about people asking us if we are upset that he lost. my opinion is that we won five months ago. that the fact that we are irrelevant conversation this late in the game is a victory for everything he has worked for his entire career. things that people like myself and so many supporters, some a delegates believe in. making sure that hillary's campaign try to unify everybody and at the same time, moving forward down the road. holding her true to her word on this policy issues. i thought it was a great night. steve: will vote for or campaign
11:42 pm
for hillary clinton and vermont? >> i will vote for her. campaigning, i've always been doing that at a cause eye level talking to others and other british supporters who feel totally disenfranchised. are on the bernie or bust bandwagon. i've been trying to articulate the point that you don't always get to win in life. sometimes the politician, the team, whatever doesn't cross the finish line first. and an unfortunate reality that we are facing now is donald trump on the other side. just an scenario to see him in the white house. steve: now to the man from tennessee. same question? >> as vice president of democrats, i had endorsed bernie sanders. at the like is taught from was what america needs now. we need a progressive platform.
11:43 pm
the entire platform was so important to unify the country. there is a lot of working people suffering right now. i feel like his speech was phenomenal tonight. he gave the reasons why we have to unite behind hillary clinton. a lot of my fellow bernie delegates are very delicate -- emotional tonight. they are discouraged. a lot of bernie or bust people. getting messages from home all day from people complaining or discouraged. my messages that donald trump is one of the most dangerous candidates to come along in american history. one of the most tenderest -- dangerous candidates to achieve popular support and we have to unite behind the democratic party. i'm a democrat first and it is about the policies that the democratic party stands for. this of the most progressive platform ever and i believe without burning, maybe that would not have happened and that is why i'm proud i endorsed bernie and stood behind bernie and proud of the compliments that we have. we need progressive policies.
11:44 pm
i think it is time to unite behind hillary clinton. i will endorse hillary clinton. it is an emotional night and we are all very upset but it is something that has to be done for the country. there are two major parties, the have the majority of the election. we have to back killer. she is the nominee -- hillary. she is the nominee. many of my british supporters are emotional. bernie'strust judgment, he spoke to us tonight and i feel he told the truth. steve: gentlemen, thank you for being with us. go catch your buses. >> thank you. susan: thank you. on twitter, some who calls madness octomom nominate -- not to someone with skyhigh approval and massive polling advantage and gets innovation.
11:45 pm
robert now. >> i would like to say that bobby hill is reform of the national anthem was a beautiful way to start off the convention. veteran, i would like to hope that hillary will keep good on her promises to acrossveterans rights the board. i hope that she can include veterans like my father who art covered by some of the bills currently because of where he served. iwould like to say also that was a british reporter for the longest time and the convention has put to rest some of my fears i had about as by the fact that i'm still shaky on my approval of her nomination for the presidency. thank you for her call. maggie, seattle. off the am astart
11:46 pm
veteran of iraq. i directly benefited from policy that bernie sanders has implement a including the women's veterans access to call the care act. i might be biased but i'm also part of the movement that is happen throughout the country and throughout the speeches tonight as they kept calling about unity and unity, but it was so insular. it was about the party. we're talking about the country, the general election, it is about the whole country. i feel like there has not been a theh -- enough emphasis on fact that the country itself come outside of the democratic party is united behind bernie sanders. he talks about the issues that directly affect us. plans that will directly implement these things in our country and that there is
11:47 pm
all of this coming down about the dnc leak about whether this whole primary season a sham to begin with. we can't even trust that hillary has the most delegates going into the convention. there is a lot of mistrust out there. a lot of people who are not willing, inside the democratic party and outside, willing to get behind hillary clinton as president. i think it would be helpful for the democratic party to acknowledge that and for superdelegates to realize that the person most able to defeat trump in a general election is bernie sanders. susan: ok, maggie. let me jump in. ray, new jersey. democrat. >> hello.
11:48 pm
my thoughts at the end of this, is ank that, you know, it important aspect of our country and our system that we live under a two-party system which makes it difficult for such people as sanders and anybody who wants to push the spectrum of american politics. to have a real chance. hillary,to vote for but not because i support her, but rather because i've become convinced, especially after seeing the republican national convention and after reading for the more that donald trump is not only a fascist, not only a , i'm alsot only
11:49 pm
convinced that he has come to the close ties with the russian government. to the point that it would not be that an accurate to describe him as a traitor. let me jump in. back to the floor. steve has more people i doubt. -- lined up to talk to. steve: richmond, virginia. know senator kaine when he served as governor, as well as a relation? commonwealth the of virginia as a police officer. there were times that i was atigned to ensure his safety his residence at the mansion. i also know him personally. i'm active in the democratic party and there are many occasions that i have talked to him on a personal basis. he is a good man.
11:50 pm
all virginians are excited to have him as vice president. he did great for our state. unemployment, increased economic development and he just promoted that sense of duty for everyone. is onplace now that he the ticket? >> definitely now. i know for a fact that we will get virginia and that will be the tipping point that decides the selection. steve: to the speeches, as a supporter burner --bernie sanders, how did you do? >> i think senator sanders did fantastic. he is hitting on a message that he has been hitting him with his delegates over the last several weeks of the revolution was never just about him. it does not stop at the presidential level. we have much more work to do if
11:51 pm
you listen to him, he is asking us to step up and run for office and support the movement. as a state legislator, i'm asking people to do that as well. i'm proud to carry forward bernie's movement. steve: there were a lot of speeches this afternoon and tonight. one that stood out? >> bernie sanders of course. it was a unifying speech if you've done is to get together. we have to remember the main goal is to defeat the donald trump-mike pence ticket. the message to the delegation is that we must come together in solidarity so we can achieve that goal. he did an excellent job. home run. steve: any other speeches? >> the young woman and her mother from nevada. he talked about secretary clinton of her own fears of being deported. the first time tonight that brought me to tears. it hit home on why this election
11:52 pm
is so important and why come even as sanders supporters, we cannot stay home, we have to stay engaged. the answer is not building a wall. it is comprehensive immigration reform to families like the one we saw tonight so they can stay together. >> michelle obama. first lady. what was your reaction? >> that was the second time i cried this evening. it assist torque that we are having come about to nominate a woman as our president and doesn't a woman politics myself, i take a great amount of pride in that. we set the example for little girls all across the country. senator warren also always says that he went to campaigns, find liberals in the crowd and says nate becausefor se that is what girls do. to both of you, thank you for being with us. back to susan. susan: thank you. we have the clip from michelle obama speech. let's listen.
11:53 pm
>> i wake up every morning in the house that was built by slaves. [cheering] and i watch my daughter's, two beautiful intelligent black young women playing with it -- their dog on the white house lawn. [cheering] and because of hillary clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the united states. [cheering]
11:54 pm
so don't let anyone ever tell you that this country is in great. that somehow we need to make a great again because this right now is the greatest country on earth. [cheering] obama first lady michelle in her speech to the democratic national convention in philadelphia. rollcall and you will see it all. gavel-to-gavel coverage. next up is dave, illinois. republican. you are watching the opposition convention, what did you think? >> i decided on in the background. paid attention to the atmosphere. while i had it on, i was scrolling through the wikileaks that were released today that got to be wasserman schultz booted off the stage.
11:55 pm
there's a good reason why she got booted off that stage. makee point, that will bernie supporters think about what they gave into and what corruption is attached to the hilly clinton campaign, let's think about the victory fund that had $61 million in it and less than 1% was saved for the state party coffers that was gone. -- squandered by the clinton campaign. this by bernie sanders and in these e-mails, they can see the communication between the media networks and debbie wasserman schultz to cover up the fact that this was being done. they call it a money-laundering scheme. all they have to do, if they want to read this for themselves, go to wikileaks and punch in the word search from
11:56 pm
wandering and they will get a -- laundering that will get them a surprise. thank you. on twitter, she tweets sanders falling in line with the other hillary lemmings. >> at first i thought it was great that we heard the message of unity and especially after the republican national convention. but i was disappointed with the beachth senator sanders that he did not do more for the protesters. the more the protesters are heard and the more they can't -- nt, the more the trump campaign manager for themselves and show how hillary is not uniting the party. which is also a way that we can see a double standard for candidates in the way that bernie sanders is not -- hillary
11:57 pm
clinton is criticized for every move she makes. i'm looking forward to more of the democratic national convention and so excited to see the first woman to many. -- nominee. susan: thank you. one, atlanta. democrat. >> hello i'm from georgia. thank you c-span for taking my call. i love you guys. i love that you show the convention without any interruption because i was watching on another channel and i stepped away and the commercial came on. i enjoyed the convention. it was unlike the way the republicans did it. the republican letter -- rhetoric of hatred, divisiveness, and fear mongering. that is what they are. the democrats are together.
11:58 pm
--at, i'm so happy they competed and hillary got the most votes so she is the nominee. i'm glad they could get the platform together and improve him and say how he feels. they can join together. if trump gets in, i'm moving to canada. it will be a sad time. the berniehat sanders supporters, not all of them, i think he did a good job. the first lady did a fantastic job. did a fantastic job in cory booker, the whole thing was enlightening to see. i did watch the republican convention and it was sad.
11:59 pm
all right, thank you. dr. the floor. steve. susan: back to the floor. steve. steve: wanted to check in with reported to see the storylines. let's begin with scott who is in covering campaigns in the newspaper. what are the stories? you had the keynote address by senator warren, former president bill clinton in attendance. what is your takeaway? >> the main story tonight is unity. you had all camps in disarray at the beginning of the day. debbie wasserman schultz was booed off the stage at the breakfast. she resigned from her position. speakingrevented from or addressing the convention and those really this division that we were seeing from the bernie
12:00 am
sanders folks. night, it of the seemed like a lot of those issues have been resolved and did not really feel like the party was coming together in a unifying moment. something very different from what we saw at the gop convention in cleveland. has been some reporting that she still wanted to come tonight to gamble in the convention. what happened? who exactly had conversations with her. i think there were conversations at the highest level, probably within the hillary clinton with the certainly incoming replacement. i think she wanted to come forward and speak today because this is something she had been working on with the democratic party for a year and a half. this had been in the works. this was her baby and on the final day to have it taken away from hernd
