president-elect mike pence. stood for the sanctity of life, the importance of marriage and the freedom of religion. >> friday night beginning at 8:00, farewell speeches and tributes to several outgoing senators, including harry reid, barbara boxer, kelly ayotte and dan coats. this week in primetime on c-span. now democratic new york senator charles schumer holds a news conference calling for a select committee to investigate foreign cyber attacks against the u.s., including alleged russian interference in the presidential election. as the days and weeks go forward, it is clearer and clearer that the russians hacked our system, our cyber system with the intent of influencing the election.

whether it actually had an effect, that will be for the political scientist to determine. raise -- the fact that hack into our country is well known. the fact that they are hacking our political system and trying to influence the outcome, that is serious stuff. , for senators put a letter saying without to investigate. today, the four of us -- senator graham and senator mccain republicans, senator jack reed and myself, democrats, are calling for the next step. a special senate investigative committee on government hacking of our elections and other areas
9:50 pm
. a special select committee that will focus on government, foreign government, russia, but also china and iran and their hacking our political systems, as well as our economic infrastructure. has said letell the intelligence committee do this alone. that is not good enough. first, there are conflicting jurisdictions. the judiciary committee has jurisdiction of the fbi. the foreign affairs committee has jurisdiction over foreign policy. the foreign services committee has jurisdiction over the hacking of military. and the intelligence committee has jurisdiction over the cia. with all of these conflicting jurisdictions, if we do not have one select committee, first, things could be left out.
9:51 pm
second, we could get contradictory information. the fbi says this, the cia says that, and they are not reckoned file. third, the existing committees are very busy. to have to spend time getting nominees. you have to look at president-elect trump's new proposals. a select committee whose only focus is to get to the bottom of this is what is called for. the four of us are calling on this. we do not want this investigation to be political like the benghazi election. we don't want it to just be finger-pointing at one person or another. we want to find out what the russians are doing to our political system, what other foreign governments might do to our political system, and then figure out ways to stop it. only a select committee can do that. the four of us feel very strongly about that.
9:52 pm
decided just to one committee or a multiplicity of committees will leave things out, won't reconcile contradictory thermation, and because existing committees are so busy in a new administration, it will not get the pope is that it needs. trump hasnt-elect said he will be for the cia and fbi to issue a joint report. sen. schumer: we need a select committee and we need this to be done. we need a report to be done thoroughly, and then we need all the nonclassified parts to be made public. the select committee is the best way to do that. if it is bipartisan, everybody can have faith and trust in it. we have for leading senators calling forth. two democrats, to republicans. we're not going to make it political. ads i'm --

senatoreful that mcconnell himself will support it. >> your specifically talking about russia, china and -- sen. schumer: rushes the most serious problem. even public report makes it clear that they believe they have hacked the system in the dnc. it is becoming clear their intent was to influence the election. the focus should be russia, but we should not leave out china, iran and other countries as this select committee becomes constituted. >> what is the time when you're looking at? sen. schumer: asap. i hope this can be done in the first few weeks when we get back. >> how does this work? sen. schumer: the senate would have to vote to constitute a committee and its responsibilities and membership. we have had select committees before unserious serious things.
9:54 pm
we do not want partisanship to get in the way. investigation of this kind could obviously take a long time. assuming this passes and you cannot starting this within the first few weeks when you get back, how long do you think? sen. schumer: they should get to the bottom of first and foremost. week, we said it might be ok to have the defense or intelligence committee. as we studied it, the four of us said that we thought it would not be act -- would not be adequate. last week on tv, reince priebus said they would support senator mccain and i called for, which was an investigation. we hoped the president-elect would support a select
