nations economic prosperity or at least moves in that direction, your already seen the uptick in the market and small business confidence, but if he restores the economy, i think a lot of this will fall away. >> sunday night at 9:00 p.m. eastern. >> defense secretary james mattis concluded a meeting and held a brief news conference where he discussed the nato alliance and answered questions about u.s. relations with russia. >> ladies and gentlemen, secretary mattis will make a statement and take two questions. mattis: good afternoon. i have completed the defense ministerial where i had the

opportunity to engage in a bilateral discussions with a number of our fellow ministers. we all took part in a dinner last night reaffirming our strong transatlantic bond. it is a strong as i've ever seen if. i have some experience here at nato and i was impressed by how strong the bond is. my intent was to affirm the full u.s. commitment to nato and to gain an updated appreciation of the situation facing our alliance. the burden sharing message i delivered was expected and well received. i depart confident that the alliance will be unified in meeting today's security challenges. i especially appreciate the leadership of the clear of thent -- leadership general and the clear alignment of our messages.

as i noted yesterday, nato is the fundamental bedrock for keeping the peace and defending the freedoms we enjoy today. minister of france, nato is a fearless alliance. it is a manifestation of our principles and shared values and the u.s. commitment to article five and our mutual defense is rock solid. in our meetings, we discussed in detail the strategic situation facing the alliance. including the minister of germany, recognized 2014 as a watershed year that awakened allies to a new reality. my message to my fellow ministers was simple. nato arose out of strategic necessity and nato must evolve in response to the new strategic reality. our community of nations is under threat on multiple fronts as the ark of insecurity bills

on nato's periphery and beyond. we discussed the increased threats facing our alliance and unified by the threats to our democracies, i found resolved to address the growing threat. actions haveessive violated international law and are destabilizing. terrorism in the middle east and north africa is a direct and immediate threat to europe and us all. i am mindful of the tragic attacks on our allies and what they have suffered in paris, nice, istanbul and right here in brussels. the list goes on. we recognize as well that the imposition of instability have taken on new forms we must now address. for example, the cyber domain. threats,se to these nato is reinforcing deterrence and defense and adapting to more directly address terrorist

threats along our southern flank from the mediterranean to turkey, and in the words of the turkish mod, a seamless defense all the way down to the mideast and across the mediterranean. we also met with one of nato's closest partners, georgia. there is appreciation and respect for george's sacrifices onand the battlefield in afghanistan. there are strategic and political realities. i depart here confident that we have an appreciation of the burden we are sharing and we must also stain for deterrence, peace and prosperity. i'm optimistic the alliance will adopt a plan this year to make steady progress toward meeting defense commitments in light of the increased threats we all agree we face. is imperative that we do so to confront the threats as outlined

by the ministers of defense over the last few days. committingns already to defense, and the other commitments other allies have made give me the confidence that nothing can shake our unity. and our commitment to defend our way of life. appreciateally estonia, greece and the united kingdom, who have already met the 2% defense spending commitment. these countries are leading by example and making real sacrifices. all allies recognize they are benefiting from the best defense in the world, and i am optimistic all nations are a steady path to reach the level of commitment made at the wales and warsaw summit. remainssatlantic bond very strong. i see her in brussels a quick and purpose in this alliance and

a profound determination to stand together and honor our commitments to each other. i have confidence we will sustain the legacy we have inherited and do what is necessary to defend our freedom. take you very much, i'm happy to take your questions. >> jennifer griffin, fox news. thank you, sir. what does russia need to stop doing in order for the u.s. to work with them? the chairman of the joint chiefs is meeting with them for the first time since they invaded ukraine. can we trust them? they have totis: live by international law just like we expect all mature nations on the planet to do. what we will do is engage in aically, we are not position right now to collaborate on a military level,
11:22 pm
but our political leaders will engage and try to find common ground or a way forward where russia, living up to its commitments, will return to a partnership of sorts with nato. going to have to prove itself first and live up to the commitments they have made in the agreement. >> do you believe that the russians interfered in the u.s. election? i would sayttis: there is very little doubt that they either interfered or have attempted to interfere in a number of elections in democracies. heidi and send -- yunsten. >> you said yesterday the u.s. would think about moderating its commitment to nato is the european members did not increase their defense budgets.
11:23 pm
what does that mean exactly? that the rocksolid support for article five does not necessarily bend, or you will withdraw troops from europe? commitmentattis: the to article five reminds -- remains rocksolid. everyone is hearing their fair share of the burden -- everyone carrying their fair share of the burden was very well received. there was no argument. it was just a discussion of how fast each nation can reach it. i leave here very optimistic. we can take one more question. from the new york times. thank you, sir. took offenseses
11:24 pm
from your remarks yesterday and said that if nader wants to deal with russia from a position -- nato wants to deal with russia from my position of strength,. do you think you need to send additional americans to syria? i have no needs: to respond to the russian statement. nato has stood for military strength and protection of democracies and the freedoms we intend to pass on to our children. but you asked two questions. keep youcan't journalists down, can we? [laughter] i don't know.is: i think you have to ask that question of some others in order to get a full answer.
11:25 pm
it is just not one i would be comfortable answering on my own at this point. >> ok. >> you haven't decided? i first wanttis: to talk to the other allies. we will decide where we are going. here tog to fly from the middle east. i'm not comfortable answering it yet. once we know what we have in our mutual appreciation for the situation, then we will move forward. i'm not comfortable answering it. --rei consider myself a cup couple of weeks in the office. once i get current and get allies assumptions and appreciations for the situation, we will carve out where we want to go and at that point i will give you a more steadied answer. right now, i would be concerned about giving you a half-baked one. we have to take at least one more non-american now. >> the woman in the fourth row,
11:26 pm
please. >> could you please elaborate a little more about the word moderate? i would prefers: not to, because that is basically the headline i do not anticipate ever seeing, by being very honest among friends, we say this is a burden we all have to carry equally, and my being ouruasive, we will write own headlines as unified alliance that will stand up for each other. i'm very confident we will not have to have that. sometimes you say the things you don't want to have happen so that you can have them off. but thank you. thank you ladies and gentlemen. i don't think i'm going to get ahead of these ladies so i am going to give up while i am only somewhat behind. but thank you very much.
